A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

NEWS

This summer we celebrated my brother’s 50th birthday (the first opportunity we’ve had since he turned 50 last November). I was in charge of the playlist so my task was to compile music he has liked over the years into one handy iTunes list we could play on repeat for the afternoon and evening. The opening song had to be Neil Young’s Old Man with the line ‘Old man take a look at your life…’. John appreciated the sentiment! Bob Dylan also featured as well as The Cranberries, The Waterboys, The Stunning, The Bangles, The Pogues The Pretenders, The Undertones (who knew so many band names began with THE?), U2, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash, Christy Moore and Hothouse Flowers. With a few additions (a whole lot more Leonard Cohen along with Regina Spektor, Snow Patrol and Nick Cave), I now have a playlist which brings me a lot of joy. I sing-along when I’m in the mood (and alone) and sometimes I find myself in tears (don’t ever play Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars when you’re feeling sad). I remember people and places from times gone by. I remember items of clothing (my Bananarama phase was a sight to behold!), bus journeys with my Walkman, cycling around Dublin to Lou Reed’s Perfect Day… Music is incredibly powerful and there are many studies into how it can improve brain health and function and make you smarter, happier and more productive at any age. It’s even used to help Alzheimer’s patients. Music therapy has been very successful at getting through to patients even when nothing else has. It seems that musical memories far outlast other kinds of memories and help alleviate depression, anxiety and agitation. Imelda May helped me though many long days when I was on maternity leave. Jack and I still dance like lunatics when Johnny Got a Boom Boom comes on the radio or TV. I hope you have access to the music you love, but if you know someone who doesn’t, perhaps an elderly friend or neighbour, wouldn’t it be lovely to make it possible. I’m currently working on a list for my parents. Ever heard of Ray Lynam?

NEWS PARTNERSHIP WORKING BRINGS NEW PLAY AREA A new play area for children under the age of 11 is now open on the corner of the sports field at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre (KWMCC). The equipment will help with the deficiency of play areas in the west part of Kesgrave. It is hoped it will be a stop-off point for young children during the day and on the way home from school, where parents can sit and relax while their children enjoy the new equipment.

IPSWICH HEARING CENTRE MARKS 20th YEAR WITH SPECIAL HEARING CARE EVENT Ten million people in the UK – one in six of us – have some degree of hearing loss. One local company is using a milestone in its history to try and help improve the hearing of those who are struggling. The Hearing Care Centre, based on Upper Brook Street in Ipswich, celebrates its 20th birthday this year, having been established by audiologist and entrepreneur Karen Finch back in 1998.

Kesgrave Town Council and KWMCC worked in partnership to get this project to fruition. The play equipment was funded by SPARK (Sport, Amenities Recreation in Kesgrave) who through their finance made the project possible. Pictured on the front cover are KWMCC Chair of Trustees Richard Baird, Councillor Alan Comber, Chair of Kesgrave Town Council Neal Beecroft-Smith and SPARK Chair Charles Rayworth. Seated at the front are Dr Stewart Young from SPARK and Patrick Mills, KWMCC secretary/treasurer.

LIVING WITH OSTEOPOROSIS A free educational event at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre (IP5 1JF) on Friday, September 28, 1.30-4.30pm. The keynote speaker will be Dr Suzanne Lane, Consultant Rheumatologist at Ipswich Hospital, with DXA Radiographer Carolyn MacNicol and Osteoporosis Specialist Nurse Karen Brixey. It’s also an opportunity to ask questions on treatment options, diagnosis and self-care. For further information and to book a place contact Sue Marx: 07720 353825 / s.marx@nos.org.uk

SPECIAL MARTLESHAM HEATH CONTROL TOWER OPEN DAY Sunday, September 9, 11am-4pm with a large display of vintage vehicles (civilian and military), food and drink, various stalls/stands and attractions, and a raffle. It’s also Heritage Day at The Control Tower Museum. Free entry; donations appreciated to support the museum. Located behind Parkers Place, off Eagle Way, Martlesham Heath IP5 3UZ. For more information contact Howard on 01473 274300 or visit: www.mhas.org.uk

To mark the occasion, Karen and her team have organised a free to attend open week at its flagship Ipswich practice between Monday 17 and Saturday 22 September. Patients with pre-booked appointments will be able to benefit from a complimentary appointment with an expert audiologist, who will conduct a full hearing assessment, offer advice and guidance based upon the results and make personalised recommendations on solutions that could help improve the patient’s hearing. Karen was keen to point out why people should consider coming along: “We offer an informal and relaxed atmosphere for our patients to enjoy their visit with us. Our audiologists are some of the best in the country and you can rest assured that you’ll be in safe hands.” To book your appointment call 01473 230330 or visit: www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk On Thursday, September 20 (9am-5pm) The Hearing Care Centre staff will also be holding a Barking Bake Off event at their Ipswich practice in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. All employees will be selling their own homemade baked goods to help get closer to the company’s £20k fundraising target for 2018.

BLOSSOM APPEAL CHARITY DANCE The charity fundraising dance held on Saturday, July 28 at Kesgrave Social Club was a great success. Through this publication, I would like to thank the following for all their support and assistance. The team at In Touch for promoting the function, Polstead Press and my niece Sophie for printing all the posters and tickets FOC, Midge and Tony for putting up posters everywhere, Tommy and Gina at RTN Racing, Colin and Kay Cooper, Doug and Pam Evans, Yvonne Rodwell, Elmers Hardware, Linda Stalley and Kesgrave Social Club, The Sproughton Wild Man, Westend Music, Wilco Motor Spares, Seckford Hall Hotel, Carol Freeman, Planet Rock Music, Dick Hall, Margaret Shreeve, Barry and Pat Sadler, Julie and Barry Curtis, Tony and Jim Davey of Evergreen Garage, The Baker family of Whip Street Motors, Kath George and Chris, Judy and James Studd of Highland Motors. A big thank you goes to the entertainers who gave their time for nothing: Jane and Roger Kemp of Tyler-Kemp, Ernie, Julian, Bruce, Rick and Mick of Rich Clifford and The Young Once, and also Tony, John and Keith of Rave-On. And a big thank you to everybody who attended the evening and supported the charity. From all accounts and comments on the night, everybody enjoyed all the bands and had a really good night and wanted to know when the next one is. If I have omitted anybody I apologise, but please know I am truly grateful for all the support and help. The result of the fundraising is that I, along with my wife Yvonne, handed over £2,608 to Angela at Ipswich Hospital Blossom Appeal, which will help towards the new Breast Cancer Unit. Well done everybody. Keith

NEWS / OUT & ABOUT BUS NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER I’d like to remind people in the earlier part of Kesgrave of a useful local bus service which is easily overlooked. This is the 800 Park & Ride route, which earlier this year had a stop added at Kesgrave Fisheries. This can be very handy because it runs every 15 minutes and provides a fast limited-stop run to and from Ipswich where it calls at a number of central stops. The normal fare for local journeys applies, pensioners’ passes are accepted and the only extra charge is for going to the car parks at each end of the route. I hope you will find it as useful as I do. Happy Wanderer

MARTLESHAM HEATH SURGERY As you know flu season is not far away. Usually we start our immunisations campaign in October, however this year there is a strong possibility that our vaccine will not be delivered until November. Please check the posters in the surgery windows, and also on our website for updates. As soon as we know when the vaccine is arriving we will arrange clinic dates. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

MIDWEEK WALK On Wednesday, October 10, starting at 10.30am, I will be leading a walk from the footpath opposite The Bell Public House. I anticipate walking for approximately two hours and returning to our start point. If you have any questions, or in the event of bad weather, please call me on 01473 623486. I look forward to meeting you on October 10. Town Council Footpath Representative Michael Rayment

Cleaning in Progress! The parish council have arranged for the 40 or so benches that you will see dotted around the parish (and may have even rested on) to be cleaned or undergo maintenance. They will also be looking at doing work on any plaques on the benches that need some TLC. All the play areas (Tower Hall, Broke Hall, Chestnut Close, Yew Tree Grove and Kelvedon Drive) are being pressure washed and any play equipment in need of maintenance attended to. Some of the noticeboards in the parish are looking a little unloved and the glass is hard to see through so these will all be undergoing a thorough clean. Peggy and Bert Kellard have been coming to our coffee mornings for a few years and on August 2 they celebrated their 60th diamond wedding anniversary. They decided that it would be nice to celebrate their special day with family and all the friends they have made at our coffee mornings. The blessing was given by Paul Darbyshire, our local priest, and this was followed by an excellent buffet in Kesgrave Conference Centre. It was a lovely morning attended by more than 50 people. If you would like to come along to one of our coffee mornings, they are held every Thursday between 10 and 11.30am in the community centre. We are very lucky that we have such a nice friendly group. There is no membership fee; just come along when you feel like a bit of company. Sue Snoulten

Technology and Trust Most of us are so used to tapping plastic on top of a little machine or punching in a number and pressing ‘Enter’ that we don’t think twice about trusting the technology in a shop, restaurant or, now, at your local weekly market. Whether you are a happy tapper or a firm believer in cash, you can spend your hard-earned moolah* at Martlesham Heath Country Market. You know you can trust us – we are your neighbours: a co-operative of skilled and talented people who enjoy baking and making and selling our products. Fresh vegetables, home-grown plants and eggs from chickens so local you can almost hear them cluck are also in among the usual mix, but be early to get them for yourself. And why not get a gift for a friend (or a treat for yourself)? Remember, there’s plenty to see every Tuesday morning from 9-11.15am in Martlesham Heath Pavilion. Enjoy a cuppa after some gentle browsing? *’Spondoolies’ is my current favourite slang term for money, from 19th century American slang, and meaning an amount of spending money. It’s thought to be derived from ‘spondylics’, coins piled for counting, probably from Greek ‘spondulos’, meaning vertebra, owing to the similarity of piles of coins to the vertebrae of the human spine. Yes, we can now take payment from debit and credit cards: come and try it!

ROGER DAVID BURROWS MUSIC FUND On Wednesday, October 17, The Roger David Burrows Music Fund presents a talk by Russell Stowe entitled Woodbridge Violins – Nearly 30 Years at 7.30pm at St Michaels Church Centre, The Drift, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL. Russell started at the Newark School of Violin Making, learning about the construction of instruments and their restoration. He then worked for a violin shop in the midlands for five years, running their workshop. Russell left in 1991 to start Woodbridge Violins and has become widely known to professional players, teachers and students of all ages and ability. He expertly repairs and restores instruments and bows on site in his workshop as well as supplying quality violins, violas, ’cellos and bows. Admission £5 at the door. Light refreshments and a raffle. The venue is fully accessible and there is adjacent free parking Profit from the evening will be going to The Roger David Burrows Music Fund, which was set up in 2012 in memory of Roger David Burrows (1980-2012) by his family. With this music fund we are offering small grants to groups or individuals which we hope will inspire all abilities, adults and children, in music making. Information about The Roger David Burrows Music Fund will be available on the evening or you can visit: www.rogerdavidburrows.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT KESGRAVE CO-OP WOMEN’S GUILD

MARTLESHAM LADIES CLUB

Claire Mucklestone from Bourne Garden Centre in Ipswich was our speaker on July 10 and she brought a huge range of beautiful plants with her. She told us about her Saturday job at Notcutts when she was 16, which led to her training with them and achieving her Craftman’s Certificate. All her family had a love of gardening and in 1997 she bought the land and started Bourne Bridge Garden Centre in Wherstead Road.

After a summer break our evening meetings will recommence on September 13 when David Phelen will give a talk entitled The History of St Audry’s – From Workhouse to Asylum. Then on September 27 we will have the opportunity to paint a pot with Wendy Card. Perhaps we will discover our hidden artistic talents!

Claire supplied plants for No. 1 Court at Wimbledon and other London projects. She hopes to continue to grow more of her own plants from seed and cuttings and has expanded the site to include chickens and other animals. Claire went through each of the plants she had bought, explaining about their habits, pruning and positioning. The talk was very informative and funny. We were able to purchase plants after the meeting. We held our birthday tea on July 24; members provided the buffet and we were entertained by the local ukulele band that sang and played well known songs, including George Formby classics. Steve Shaw, a director of the East of England Co-op and a member of their membership and community engagement committee, joined us and cut the birthday cake. We are very grateful to receive a grant each year from the Co-op which helps us with our room hire. Twenty-six members visited Helmingham Hall on August 7. We were served a wonderful vintage afternoon tea and several members explored the grounds. The Coach House tearoom is a lovely setting and well worth a visit. NEXT MEETINGS Tuesday, September 4: Old Sayings and Origins by Peter Banham. Many of the sayings we use everyday were coined long ago and Peter will explain their unusual origins. Tuesday, September 18: The World of Optical Illusion by Colin Hopper. Optical Illusions occur when the brain misinterprets what is actually visible to the eye. Knowledge and memory give us an expectation, and then logic is applied but sometimes the brain assumes the wrong thing. Colin will explain some of these amazing illusions. Tuesday, October 2: David Webb, one of the yellow coats in the Hi de Hi TV series, will entertain us with his memories of the show and his life as an actor. Tuesday, October 16: We are holding our Harvest Supper, further details next month. We welcome new members who can visit for two meetings before joining. The annual membership is £15 and we charge £2.50 per meeting to including refreshments and raffle tickets. Meetings start at 7.30pm in the community centre. The guild holds 23 meetings a year plus other trips and events. For more information please contact Gloria Everett: 01473 614991 www.kesgravecoopwomensguild.onesuffolk.net

Looking ahead to next month, on October 11 Wendy Butcher will tell us about Life in a Holiday Camp in the Fifties and Sixties. Try something new this autumn, come to one of our interesting meetings and make new friends. Meetings are held on alternate Thursday evenings at 7.15pm in the Richards Room. To find out more contact Doreen Boar: 01473 622768

MARTLESHAM HEATH AVIATION SOCIETY On Friday, September 7, 7.30-10pm, Stuart Yule presents a talk entitled RollsRoyce in Germany – A Journey through the History of German Gas Turbine Engine Manufacture at Martlesham Community Centre on Felixstowe Road.

ORWELL PROBUS CLUB We meet on the second Thursday of each month at Ipswich Sports Club on Henley Road for lunch and usually a speaker entertains us afterwards.

German made Engines have powered aircraft from the iconic Second World War designed German Me 262 to ultra-modern Gulfstream 650s. Stuart, who works for Rolls Royce, takes us on a journey about Rolls-Royce and its part in the history of German Gas Turbine Engine manufacture. A fascinating story.

OUT & ABOUT / SCHOOLS KESGRAVE CANASTA CLUB Meets at the Royal British Legion Hall on Ropes Drive at 7.30pm and welcomes new players. September is all about harvesting so dig up your onions and keep them somewhere light and dry, and dig up your potatoes but keep them somewhere dark and dry! They both need to be kept away from the frosts too. You may also have strawberries and raspberries to harvest still and, of course, apples and pears. Now is also the time to prune fruit trees and bushes. Lots of summer plants will now have died or be dying off so do have a good tidy up and put them into a compost bin if you have one. In terms of sowing – any earlier sown spring cabbage can be planted out now but should be protected with fleece. Oriental vegetables can also be sown – as can over-winter onions and garlic. Pumpkins should be shaping up nicely in readiness for eating or carving for Halloween – reminding us that autumn is just around the corner. Our Open Day this year is on Sunday, September 9 when allotmenteers get together and share food and stories – not purely gardening-related! It runs from noon-2pm so if you’re thinking about the possibility of taking on an allotment why not pop along and have a look round and meet some of us for a chat? This year in addition to our usual vote for the best plot competition we are also planning a best scarecrow competition. If you’re interested in taking on a plot please contact our membership secretary, Angela Brown: membership@kesgrave-allotments.org.uk / 01473 612283 Sally Peckham

PORTAL WOODLANDS CONSERVATION GROUP Thank you to everyone who attended the July work morning; we had a great turnout despite the heatwave! Because of the unexpectedly warm temperatures we’ve been experiencing recently, the volunteers took a break from laying bark chippings, focussing instead on the removal of undergrowth and vegetation on the path running behind Deben Avenue. Because the gardens border the woods for the length of the road, the Fire Service has asked us to keep it clear for access in case of fire. In addition, the area also acts as a firebreak to protect the gardens. The old adage proved true once again as ‘many hands made light work’ and the inflated numbers of volunteers were also able to make a start on clearing the southern tumulus, ensuring that the mound remains clear, in keeping with English Heritage guidelines. Unfortunately, the group’s tool store has been broken into over the past month so if you see any dumped tools, etc. in the woods or local area, please report this either to the police on 111 or to us via the contact details below. DATES FOR THE DIARY Volunteer Work Morning (all ages) Saturday, September 15, 10am-noon Meet at the Education Area Tools, training and light refreshments provided All welcome – no need to book Nature Explorers (11-18 year olds) Saturday, September 15, 9-11am Please book a place via our email address below Nature Watch Club (five-11 year olds) Dates to be confirmed New volunteers of all ages and abilities are always welcome. No experience needed. For further information, please contact us at pwcg.martlesham@ gmail.com, 01473 612632 visit pwcg.onesuffolk.net or join our members’ Facebook Group by messaging Duncan Sweeting. SCHOOLS / SPORT HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAYGROUP Thank you, thank you, thank you so much to everyone who supported our summer fair by donating some amazing prizes for our raffle and to everyone who came along and supported us on the day. Together you helped us to raise a massive £870. As a nonprofit making playgroup, we rely on fundraising to be able to purchase new resources for the children. When discussing with the children what they would like, they wanted more to do outside, so we shall be purchasing more resources for the outdoor area. So, from the children and staff, thank you. There were lots of oooohs, ahhhhs, tears and laughter at the children’s graduation. The children all looked so smart in their gowns and mortar boards. We were so proud of them as they sang to their loved ones with big beaming smiles and told everyone what they would like to be when they grow up. Have lots of fun at Reception, we will miss you all. Thank you so much to all parents and grandparents who have come and supported the setting through Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations, coming into the setting and discussing different cultures and celebrations, and reading to the children at story time. I would like to also say a big thank you from all the staff for all the beautiful cards, flowers and gifts you gave us on your child’s last day. Please don’t forget us, pop along for a chat and coffee anytime, and we would love to see the children in their school uniforms. Playgroup begins on Monday, September 10, and we have many new children joining us. Our topic when we return will be All About Me. Please look out for our Facebook page (Humpty Dumpty Playgroup) to find out our letter of the week. We have some spaces from September so please feel free to contact Wendy during the summer holidays (details below) or pop in for a chat with our friendly Early Years team from September 10. We have two qualified teachers, and all other staff are CACHE qualified level 3/4. We are an Ofsted registered childcare provider for children from the age of two years onwards. As we are registered as ‘Good’, we can provide funded places for two-year-old children who have received ‘Golden Tickets’ from Suffolk County Council. We offer 30 hours of free childcare to children who are eligible the term after their third birthday, allowing your child to be in the setting from 9am to 3.30pm, and we have signed up with HM Government to offer Tax-free Childcare as parents will no longer be able to join employer childcare voucher scheme from October 4. HEDGEHOG NURSERY Welcome to the new term here at Hedgehog Nursery. We have been busy getting to know our new teacher, Mrs Haig, and also getting to know our new friends. We have explored the indoor and outdoor classrooms and have enjoyed singing lots of songs and listening to some super stories. Hedgehog Nursery is part of Gorseland Primary School and is led by a qualified teacher who is supported by highly qualified and experienced staff. We are very lucky that we can use all of the school’s facilities including Forest School, the ICT suite, the large sports hall and extensive grounds to explore. We offer wrap around care from 7.30am-6pm with our breakfast and afterschool clubs.

KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOL We hope you had a fantastic summer break and enjoyed the wonderful hot, sunny weather. Days at the beach, swimming, picnics, barbecues, ice creams – we hope you did all those things! Welcome back to all our children and we hope that our new children and their families settle in and enjoy their time with us. Kesgrave Playschool is a small playschool inspiring outdoor learning experiences. We are situated next to woodland and overlooking fields, a peaceful spot to enjoy. We make the most of our beautiful location – getting out into the woods as much as possible, bringing back leaves and cones to create our stunning displays and pictures to take home, and having fun on our swing at the big oak tree. We can sometimes see the tractors working in the field over the hedge. From our own outside area we can look out across the Millennium Field and see grown-ups taking their dogs for a walk and very occasionally a horse or two being ridden past! In our outside area we have space to ride around on bikes and trikes, tables to sit at for snack or for drawing, writing and counting activities. Plus we sow seeds in our planters and wait to see how many strawberries or runner beans we can pick, and see how tall our sunflowers can reach! We still have some spaces left for this, and future terms, and we welcome you to come and look round. Our dedicated team, and small numbers, ensure that your child will have excellent opportunities to learn and grow with us. Call us on 07746 907060 to arrange a visit or for more details visit: Facebook martleshamandkesgraveplayschools / www.mandkplayschools.co.uk

KESGRAVE BOWLS CLUB I can’t quite believe how quickly the bowls season is nearly at an end. There are still one or two league games to play, but most teams should finish quite well in the leagues. The club pairs on Saturday, July 14 was won by myself and my daughter-inlaw, Sally Fisher. Not fixed I assure you! The club triples on Saturday, August 4 was won by another Fisher, Tony together with Rick Calver and Lynn Scannell. We still have our open triples on August 26 and our open pairs on September 8. I believe we still have some available blocks for the pairs. Let’s hope the weather will be kind to us and everyone has an enjoyable day. The club AGM will be on Wednesday, October 24 in the Bowls Pavilion at 7pm. Hopefully all our members will try to attend. I will send out renewal membership letters prior to the AGM to enable members to hand them to me on the night. A polite reminder that menus for our annual dinner are in the pavilion. Hopefully all members will join us for this on Saturday, December 8. It’s a lovely evening with excellent food, again at Rushmere Golf Club. Again, anybody wishing to try their hand at bowls can contact me for all the relevant information and the opportunity to try it out before making any firm commitment. Joyce: 01473 626075

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS NORTHGATE & KESGRAVE KARATE CLUB Northgate and Associated Karate Clubs have had an increasingly successful year in kata as well as kumate. Jonathan Mottram, who coaches the England youth kata squad, led a session for the club on July 10 at Kesgrave Church Hall with Northgate Karate Club kata squad and some of them have been invited to train with him in Romford. Many of the team pictured have competed in Belgium and Poland this year as well as in competitions at Southend, Basildon, Walthamstow, Gillingham, Hornchurch, Gloucester and The Central England Karate Championships in Worcester on July 1. Bill Williams, who runs the karate club, is very proud of his students’ achievements this year and is striving to continue and improve their success even further. In kumate, Ruby Hunt won gold at the England Championships in April and became England National Champion 2018. She has competed at two WKF (World Karate Federation) Youth League competitions, one in Bulgaria where she came seventh and one in Croatia where she had five tough fights to finish fifth out of 45 top fighters from around the world. She won a bronze medal at the Austrian Open in Salzburg in June and a bronze medal at the Central England Karate Championships in Worcester in July. She also represented the Midland Region at the EKF Regional Championships in Leicester. A big thanks to her coaches. Some of the students who compete started with the Red Dragons section of the club when they were only five years old, but others joined later. If you are interested in joining our friendly club at any age, just for fun, to get fit or to compete in the future, please come along to one of our clubs or contact us via our website. We train at Heath Primary and Gorselands Primary during term time as well as at Northgate Sports Centre (all year round). For further details visit: www.northgate-karate.co.uk

KESGRAVE CRICKET CLUB As we move into the business end of the season, we are pleased to say that both teams have continued their success and still remain at the top of their respective leagues. A crucial day this month saw our First XI play Walsham Le Willows and our Second XI play their nearest rivals Saxmundham. It just showed the depthwe have in our squad this year as our First team earned a maximum 20 points by skittling out the opposition for just 69 and our Second team bowled out Saxmundham for just 63, giving them a 154 run victory and another 20 points. We entertained a touring team this year called ‘Far From The MCC’. Kesgrave CC came out on top with a narrow victory, but a great time was had by all and has maybe given us the spark to start touring again next year. Notable batting achievements last month include: Akil Gogna (55) and Ryan Hoyle (63) v Saxmundham; Matt Oliver (92), Mike Worne (77) and Sam Colver (41) v Dunmow; Paul Budd (74) v Mistley; Andy Trevor (58) and Neel Patel (40) v St. Margaret’s; Matt Oliver (86) and Mike Worne (56 no) v Woolpit. A final mention to one of our bowlers, Greg Wallen for a very rare occurrence, hitting a four! Notable bowling performances last month include: Connor Betts (3-14) and Greg Wallen (3-15) v Saxmundham; Sam Colver (5-14) and Sanjay Patel (3-9) v Walsham Le Willows; Connor Betts (5-67) and Mike Worne (4-8) v Walsham Le Willows; Sam Godward (5-7) and Liam Young (5-33) v St. Margaret’s; Ben Garnham (4-65) v Woolpit and Connor Betts (3-22) v Mistley. The junior season culminated in a coach trip to Chelmsford to see Essex take on Surrey in the T20 Blast which was very enjoyable for all. We will be holding our annual end of season dance again this year on Friday, October 19 at Kesgrave Social Club. Please come along and join us for a fun night of dancing to an excellent live band, INFRARED. September has come around again and with the varying weather our minds start to get ready for a change in the seasons. We begin to think about what is ahead of us in the coming autumn with its falling leaves of shades of orange and brown, muted and sombre. Many people love this time of year while for others it reminds them of the coming winter with its cold, frosts and maybe even snow. I love the spring and summer seasons as I was born in March with its colour and flower, its blossom and bloom. It is wonderful that we are all so different in our preferences, showing that God loves individuality and uniqueness. Thank the Lord that we are given free choices in this life and that He didn’t create robots to do His bidding. But in that choice we have to be careful not to get it wrong. God wants us to love Him and to love others because we choose to not because we are forced to. Have a blessed September and remember you are loved. Join us on Sunday mornings at 11.30am (Café and Children’s Church 10.30am) at The Ark Church, The Drift, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QR. You can contact us via email at arkipswichuk@gmail.com and we can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @arkipswich or online at www.arkipswich.co.uk where you will find up-to-date information on what’s happening at the Ark during each week.

BIXLEY FARM CHURCH AT TOWER HALL: SUNDAY@4 We hope you have enjoyed your summer, especially if you have been able to have a well-earned break. This summer has been amazing with so many sunny days reaching high temperatures that we have not been used to for so many years. On Sunday, September 3 we will be celebrating our first year as Bixley Farm Church by having an afternoon barbecue with games, followed by a short service at Tower Hall. We will be joined by some friends from our associate churches, St John’s and St Andrews’s (Mission Ipswich East) who have supported us to develop this church. You are welcome to join us even if you haven’t been before! There is no charge or need to book. Just turn up any time between 2 and 4pm for the fun which will be followed by our usual service between 4 and 5pm. Little Lambs, our parent and toddler group, had a great first term leading up to the summer holiday and are looking forward to beginning the autumn session which will resume on Friday, September 7. As before, these sessions run from 9.15-11am every Friday during term time at Tower Hall for a nominal £1 per family. All pre-school children are welcome, preferably accompanied by an adult! The sessions give a chance for children to play and socialise with other children in a nice safe environment. Both adults and children have mid-morning refreshments. For more details please contact, Emma Allinson: families@mie.org.uk In addition to our Sunday services and parent and toddler group we also have a regular midweek homegroup in Foxwood Crescent. This group meets for approximately ninety minutes to look at different aspects of the Bible, learn more about the nature of God and his son Jesus and how this may impact on our journey through life. It’s also a chance to be part of a supportive local group of individuals. This group will be meeting on alternate Wednesdays from September. If you would like further details please contact us using the details below. We also meet for a time of prayer at Tower Hall on the first Thursday of the month at 7pm and 8pm (two 45-minute sessions). If you have anything or anyone you wish to pray for we are there for you. You just need to turn up for either of these sessions or contact us using the details below. As always, everyone is welcome to join us each Sunday for our regular weekly service at Tower Hall from 4-5pm. There are opportunities to speak to clergy or other members of the church, time for personal prayer and Holy Communion is celebrated every other Sunday. Bixley Farm Church (CofE) was initiated by St John’s, Cauldwell Hall Road and St Andrew’s, Britannia Road (collectively called Mission Ipswich East). CHURCH NEWS ALL SAINTS CHURCH

Declaring God’s Way - Sharing His Love As I write we are still experiencing very hot weather, but we have been promised that the next few days will bring much cooler air and lower temperatures. It can be a difficult time for some to enjoy such unusual weather. Elderly and sick people will have been finding it difficult to cope with at times. At Rushmere Baptist Church we have just finished our children’s Holiday Club which once again proved a great success. Close to 80 children arrived each day and to see them running in so full of enthusiasm each morning was just wonderful, sometimes leaving their parents/carers waiting for their goodbye kiss! September starts with all the usual activities beginning again. These are listed below. After a break we will be running an Alpha Course each Friday evening from Friday, September 14 at 7pm. This is for anyone to attend and you will be made most welcome. Whether you are a Christian wanting to explore your faith further, or you just want to find out what it’s all about. REGULAR ACTIVITIES Sunday 10.45am: Morning Worship with a crèche for the very young, Friends of God (FOG) for age three to School Year 2, Mustard Seeds for School Years 3-6 and The Tribe for School Years 7 and above. Sunday 6.30pm: Evening Worship (traditional style service once a month) Monday 6.15-7.30pm: FFaF (Youth Group for School Years 3-6) Wednesday 2.30pm: Senior Citizens’ Friendship Hour on the second

In July I took the funerals of two people who were only four years younger than me and also that of a five-month-old baby. These tragic events have between them left a wife an early widow, two teenage children as orphans and parents and grandparents mourning the loss of a beautiful person whose life had barely begun. On a personal front I have lost two people I considered good friends and someone who I had prayed for all their life and would have loved to get to know personally. What has struck me most forcefully about all this is that while we often fear our own death it is the death of a loved one that carries more to be dreaded. For the Christian, death is the gateway to the Father’s house; for the bereaved, it is truly a valley that casts a far-reaching shadow. John Donne’s poem For Whom the Bell Tolls makes the same point that it is the bereaved who are affected most by death as he writes: No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend’s were. Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.

Friday 9.15am: Rushmere Ducklings

If, therefore, we are those who (as Psalm 23 puts it) walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we cling to the promise that there too “thou art with me, thy rod and staff comfort me”. This life will contain its tragedies, but there lies for all who cling to Christ by faith the promise of a time to come when we will be together in that House with room for all that Jesus spoke of in John 14.

OPEN DAY To run alongside the Annual Churches Bike Ride we are holding an open morning on September 8. As this was such a success last year we thought we would do it again. It’s a great opportunity to have some fun and raise some funds for the church. We will have a pop-up café, teddy zip wire and sweet tombola. For more details visit our website or Facebook page or contact Robin on 01473 623388. Our basic pattern is that every Sunday we have services at 8.30am (BCP Communion), 10am (Modern yet traditional service with All-Age alternative) and 6.30pm (Evensong). There isn’t enough space to mention our myriad of tweaks and alternatives, but please visit www.askegrave.org.uk or email Charlotte to receive our fortnightly notices: cha.markham@btinternet.com
