A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
So football season has ended! I’m not exactly a fanatic, but since Jack started playing our weekends are planned around his fixtures (insofar as we ever have a plan). I have spent many, many, many cold and blustery mornings on the sidelines since last September and now it’s getting a little warmer, it all stops and cricket takes over! I propose a swap; winter cricket and summer football. Perhaps I’ll start a petition. Camogie (women’s version of hurling) was always my game, but it’s interesting being the parent rather than the player. Mostly I just want Jack to be safe, but a win always makes for a better weekend. When we lose, the post-match analysis goes on and on and on... Every move, every injury, every tiny transgression is discussed adinfinitum and then re-enacted just to prove the point. I feign interest, but usually I’m more focused on defrosting my fingers and toes. All that aside I will miss my Saturday mornings with the mums and dads who turn up whatever the weather. We’ve become quite good friends, as have the boys, and it’s fun to spend time with people who share a common interest, some more vocally than others! I suppose that’s why I get so many submissions from groups and clubs eager to welcome visitors or participants, and I hope those of you looking to connect with others find what you need within these pages. For some the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat may suffice, while others might want to find a new hobby or try a new activity. Getting fit might be your priority or you may want to expand your knowledge of a particular subject by attending talks and demonstrations. Finding people with a similar mind-set, who share your interest and welcome you with open arms is, and I mean this sincerely, life-changing. I’ve seen it happen with my mum. She started playing bridge about five years ago and has made so many new friends as a result. In the last two years she lost one of her best friends to cancer and another moved away to live near her family. Without her bridge ‘gang’ mum would be lost and just as they have supported her through difficult times, she has supported them. If you’re feeling a bit isolated or lonely, I hope you find someone or something in the following pages which encourages you to reach out. And if you know someone who would enjoy or benefit from an opportunity to get out and about, perhaps you could be the one who makes it happen. As I could now that my Saturday mornings are mine again for a little while.

TEDDY BEAR PARACHUTE CHALLENGE This year’s annual Teddy Bear Parachute Jump in aid of St Michael’s Church Brantham (CO11 1PZ) will take place on Saturday 29 June in the church grounds. Registration for teddy bear parachutists will open at 9.30am on the day with the first jump taking place at 9.45am. The event, sponsored by Colchester and Clacton solicitors Thompson Smith and Puxon (TSP) since the first teddies jumped, has the brave teddy bears, sporting parachutes designed and made by their owners, launching from the top of the church tower. Their descent to earth is timed, with the winner being the bear who remains airborne the longest. Ideally, trainers will have made parachutes for their brave bears before arriving to jump, but there will be a stall at the event for last minute parachute manufacture if needed. It costs just £2 for a teddy bear to jump and there are prizes of £50, £30 and £20 for first, second and third respectively for the brave bears and their owners. Repeat jumps are just £1, and if you have raised sponsorship for your teddy in aid of the church your bear can jump for free. Sponsorship forms can be collected from the back of the church. Refreshments will be on sale, so do please come along and support the church and the teddies on the day. Bob was the winning bear in 2018 with the excellent flight time of 65. 40 seconds, very closely followed by Thunder Duck in second place with 64.31s with Rainbow flying into third place with a time of 60.18s. Pictured with Bob and his family is Thompson Smith and Puxon Director Sharon Auton (second from right) and The Rev Stephne van der Toorn (far right). Sharon said: “We are really pleased to be able to support the Teddy Bear Parachute Jump again this year. It’s a great event and would urge you all to come along on the day and support The Rev Steph and the church.”

Ken has supported the market since 2017 as one of the original traders. Ken’s Emporium is just a short walk away from the South Street market and has 40 dealers. Also new to Manningtree is 7 South Street, a new café to add to our other delicious eateries in the town. Manningtree has been on the list as one of the 101 top places to live in and our market was mentioned as a great monthly attraction, with 30 dealers on the street and 40 at the Emporium. If you’re looking for something special you’ll find it in Manningtree, a beautiful little medieval town with a fantastic river walk to Mistley. All are welcome. If you have a dog we have Posie Paws pet photographer, Jemma Collins, who will photograph your pooch for the Star of the Market monthly competition. The market runs on every first Saturday from May to September. Now established as one of the largest one-day events in the region, today’s show is unrecognisable from the event that first took place at Thorpe Hall in 1899 as a cattle show and ploughing match. The show attracts more than 21,000 visitors from across the region every year and is only made possible by the time and commitment of over 200 volunteers. The 2019 show president is local dairy farmer Philip Smith, following in the footsteps of his grandmother who was president back in 1966, and his father, Andrew, who was president in 1992. It is fitting that the show’s main theme will be The Delights of Dairy, focusing on dairy themed hands-on activities, including a live milking parlour. Philip explained: “Dairy farming in the eastern region has a proud history. Visitors to the theme area at this year’s show will have a chance to see first-hand what we do as dairy farmers and the wide variety of dairy products we are responsible for producing and consumers enjoy.” Animals are a highlight for many visitors. There will be an array of showing classes for horses, cattle, sheep and goats, culminating in a grand parade of livestock in the president’s ring, the first time the grand parade has taken place for over 20 years, and a great opportunity for champion livestock exhibitors to show off their winning animals. By contrast, another first for the show will be Jason Smyth’s Adrenaline Tour. Jason is an ex-world championship moto-cross rider and will bring a main ring display crammed with spectacular tricks on his quadbike. There will be more than 250 trade stands and exhibitions to visit this year, and the show organisers are delighted to confirm that trade stand space for the main showground was fully booked by mid-March, which is hugely encouraging and testament to the popularity of the show. So, whatever your interests, the Tendring Show is certainly the worth a visit. For further details about this year’s show and to purchase e-tickets at a reduced rate, as well as claiming a free child’s ticket, visit: www.tendringshow.co.uk

RIVERSIDE HEALTH CENTRE Pregabalin/Gabapentin There were changes to these drugs from April 1 which may affect you. These changes follow a government consultation because of concerns around possible misuse, and mean that these medicines are now classed as controlled drugs. The medicines themselves will not change, but there are now more rules on how they are prescribed and dispensed. What does this mean for me? You (or your representative) may be asked for proof of identity and you will be asked to sign separately for these drugs. The quantity on your prescription may have been reduced as it is recommended that no more than 30 days of a controlled drug should be prescribed at any one time. Controlled drug prescriptions must be dispensed and collected within 28 days of the date on the prescription. Any medication owed to you must also be collected within 28 days of the date on the prescription. Sharps Boxes With immediate effect Riverside Health Centre can no longer be responsible for the disposal of sharps bins containing waste produced in patients’ homes. We have been providing this service for our patients, however under the directive of NHS England we have to request that from now on you contact your local council waste services to apply for collection of this clinical waste. You’ll find details at: • www.babergh.gov.uk/waste-services • www.tendringdc.gov.uk/rubbish-and-recycling/clinical-waste We will continue to provide you with empty sharps bins via your prescription requests either through Riverside Health Centre or your nominated pharmacy. Please speak to the dispensary staff if you have any enquiries or need help to complete any necessary paperwork that your council may require. Consent Forms To comply with GDPR, we will be introducing a consent form for you to complete if you need someone else to collect your medication for you. This form will also give consent for the dispensary team to pass on any messages to you via the person collecting. We will not discuss your medical care with the person collecting your medication unless you have previously authorised us to do so by informing us that they are your nominated carer/representative Please ask the dispensary for further information and the form to complete. CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE Appointment System and Patient Contact Review The practice will be implementing a new appointment system in July/ August. The current system works well, but we have been reviewing systems used at other practices and we feel we can improve it further. However, the appointment system is just one facet of the practice and we want to take the opportunity to review all patient contact with the aim of making it simpler for you to contact us and for us to address your needs in a clear and straightforward manner. We will also review how we contact patients when we need to, for example to inform them of test results or to book annual checks. Over the next couple of months we will be consulting with patients to understand how we can improve the service we offer to ensure it is efficient, easy to use and provides the level of service you expect from your GP practice. This includes the use of text message, email, our website, online consultations, as well as your contact with the practice over the phone and face to face. In short, we want to offer an excellent patient experience which meets the individual needs of patients. We will be holding open days at East Bergholt and Capel in June (dates TBC) and will provide more details as we firm up how we intend to change our systems. In the meantime, we would like to hear your thoughts on what works well (we don’t want to change what already works well) and what can be improved. Areas to consider are how you prefer to interact with the practice (e.g. phone, email, text), areas need to focus on because needs are not always met first time (e.g. medication) and indeed any other aspect of providing healthcare which you feel we can improve upon (e.g. continuity of care). Any thoughts would be appreciated and you can send me a short letter, share your thoughts with a member of staff, phone the practice and ask to speak to me or send a suggestion via the contact page at: www.constablecountrymedicalpractice.co.uk Training Days Please note that the practice will be closed from 1pm on Thursdays 20 June and 18 July for staff training. On these afternoons the Capel St Mary building will be open to enable access to the pharmacy, but reception will be closed. East Bergholt reception will be open. Please note that there will be no clinicians at either building after 1pm as they will be attending training off-site. Our phone lines will be closed for the afternoon. If you need medical assistance please contact 111. If your need is urgent then please dial 999 or attend your local A&E. Practice Manager Pete Keeble

NEWS
REPORT TO PARISHES, BRANTHAM WARD Babergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw The Election You probably know we had one, because the turnout was over 40 per cent, pretty good in local elections. I must thank my friends and helpers, but mostly the voters. I ran the campaign that I always planned to, going to every door, often twice or more. That experience is just invaluable. I always learn a lot from this process, taking the pulse, answering questions and noting what questions. All is stored away in my memory, to be remembered and used. We also had a parish council election. The 11 elected met a few days later and are already getting organised. You know the importance I give to PCs. The new council is going to be another good one, with a wide range of skill sets and ages. As the new chair, I’ll be making it my business to ‘make it so’. It might get a bit schizophrenic, also being the district councillor, but I’ve had a lot of experience over the last four years. It’s not that unusual. Babergh in 2019 I hoped for a ‘balanced’ council with the diverse opinions that Babergh always had. The voters responded with 15 Conservative, 8 Independent, 4 Green, 3 Lib-Dem and 2 Labour. We return to no overall control with 32 members. As I write, discussions are taking place as to how to make an effective and stable council. By print time, you will know the results of
that. I do know that some basic principles must apply. We are not going to solve the existing problems by pointing fingers and assigning blame. Nobody has all the answers, or all the talent and ideas. Applying some goodwill, sense and humanity will be essential to face some very real challenges right now. There are decisions that must be made and soon. We have all been given the responsibility to make them. People expect us to behave properly, rather than indulging in childish games. The Babergh Independents, working together and with a quarter of the seats, will be, must be, heavily involved in promoting this approach. Nothing else makes sense. Final Thanks These go to my Alton Ward partner, Harriet Steer, who did more work than you know, staying in touch throughout. I count her as both a friend and a colleague. They also go to some very good officers and councillors I’ve worked with. Some will have moved on, but their experience and help have always been essential. And they go to the Blue Claud Butler, with me throughout the campaign. Alastair McCraw 07812 564188 / alastair.mccraw@babergh.gov.uk Facebook: Alastair McCraw, Brantham Councillor
CONSTABLE COUNTRY PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP
LAWFORD PARISH COUNCIL’S GRANT FUNDING POLICY
The Patient Participation Group (PPG) will have been in existence for four years in July. There are currently 10 PPG members and we usually meet monthly. Our contact details and photographs are on the noticeboards in both waiting rooms and minutes of our meetings are posted on the practice website: www.constablecountrymedicalpractice.co.uk
Lawford Parish Council has changed the way in which it awards grant funding. With effect from 4 December 2018, grant allocation will be determined once a year in July (2019). All applications for funding must be received by the third Monday of June 2019 for determining at the July finance meeting. Any application received after that date will be held over until July of the following year.
Patient Comments and Complaints Patients can post any comments or complaints in our comment boxes in either surgery or email us at: constablecountryppg@gmail.com
A full copy of the new policy can be found on council website but the following grant criterion will apply:
We discuss these with the practice manager and GPs at our monthly meetings. Patients often think that if they make a complaint to the practice they will be struck off the practice list. This is not the case. In fact if you have a serious complaint it is vital that you let the practice know. Alternatively, you can complain direct to NHS England. Feedback can also be left on the Healthwatch Suffolk website.
1. Grants must demonstrate how Lawford residents will benefit.
Doctors at the Practice There are currently four GP partners at the practice: Drs Victoria, Tetteh, Vincent and Parikh. Dr Nasta works part time and Dr Johal has recently joined the practice, working one day a week. Nursing staff, receptionists and other members of the team are all listed on the website.
3. Grants will only be awarded for forthcoming or ongoing projects – not retrospectively.
Review of Appointment System We know that availability of appointments and continuity of care are concerns for patients. An online consultation service called e-consult is now available. Receptionists can also offer GP Plus appointments in the evenings and at weekends. These are provided by doctors in the Suffolk GP Federation and are generally in Ipswich.
5. The parish council may request evidence of the applicant’s efforts to raise their own funding.
The partners in the practice are revising the way appointments are made and we will be helping them to talk to patients about this over the next two months. The new system will be implemented later in July. Further details will be available on the practice website and at open days at both surgeries. We will continue to work with the practice to improve services to patients. PPG Chair Kathy Pollard
www.keepingintouchwith.com/manningtree
2. Grants cannot be awarded to commercial enterprises which aim to generate a profit or to individuals. (It may be possible for council to help an organisation to which the individual belongs, thus releasing funds for the organisation to help individuals).
4. The parish council may ask applicants to give a presentation to the council in support of their application.
6. The parish council may require recipients of grants to provide a written report of how the grant money has been used. It may take the form of an annual report or set of accounts that clearly identify the spending. If the parish council is not satisfied with the arrangements, they reserve the right to request a full refund of the monies awarded. 7. Written approval of the council must be sought for a change in the use of grant monies. If the above criterion can be met, applications must be made in writing to Council Offices, Ogilvie Hall, Wignall Street, Lawford CO11 2JG or email to: lawfordpc@btconnect.com

BRANTHAM AMATEUR THEATRICAL SOCIETY Pop along to Brantham Village Hall to see our latest production, Out of Order by Ray Cooney, which runs from Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 July at 7.30pn. This bedroom comedy sees a philandering politician, Richard Willey, trying to bumble his way out of a series of potentially embarrassing situations. After planning to spend the evening with Jane Worthington, one of the opposition’s secretaries, the evening descends into one unplanned disaster after another. A farce full of mayhem, comical misunderstandings and many unwitting characters who become more and more embroiled in the increasingly tangled tale of events. Tickets (£8) are on sale from 1 June from Bakes and Blossoms, Acacia Court, Brantham and online at: www.ticketsource.co.uk All other enquiries to: 07891 974844 / 01206 396674 Please note this production is unsuitable for young children.

A Hole in my Bag turned out to be an account of an unusual and inventive method of photography requiring a shopping bag with holes cut into the sides, a camera with wide angle lens, a remote trigger, the necessary skill and courage as well as a certain amount of luck! This enabled images to be taken from unusually low angles and was well illustrated with a myriad of amazing prints. Our last competition of the year involved showing three images of the same subject which was an interesting and challenging departure from the normal format (images can be viewed on our website). Future Meetings
There is no formal programme between June and September, but various summer events are planned and the first is the photography marathon on June 15. Our new season commences on September 10 with an open competition of images taken within a 10 mile radius of Manningtree to be judged by club members.
JAZZ AT THE RED LION On Saturday 8 June, The Old Jelly Rollers will be appearing upstairs at The Red Lion in Manningtree. The Old Jelly Rollers are an enthusiastic and highly talented young band, a musical collective who encompass the raucous, joyful spirit of the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans. They are bound to get your feet shuffling with their seven-piece line-up of some of London’s finest musicians. The band is led by up-and-coming songstress Louise Balkwill, named by multi-award-winning singer Liane Carroll as a singer to listen out for.
Meetings are held twice monthly at 7.30pm on Thursday evenings between September and May at the St Johns Ambulance Centre, Station Road, Manningtree CO11 1EB. New members are welcome to join or may attend initially as a visitor. Please contact our secretary for details: 01206 393751 / madps@post.com www.manningtreeanddistrictphotographicsociety.co.uk The winning image from a recent Facebook challenge, Multicoloured, was Richard Woollven with Under Southwold Pier.
Come and move to the beat of the streets of New Orleans! The band is rapidly gaining wider recognition, having recently played at world famous Ronnie Scott’s. The line-up usually features vocals, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, sousaphone/tuba, banjo and drums. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets (£12) are available at The Red Lion or at: www.redlionmanningtree.co.uk / www.wegottickets.com/event/469201

OUT & ABOUT STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday 12 June Dr Stephen Ashworth, Senior Lecturer at UEA, will present Lies, Damned Lies & Statistics. An excursion into statistics and probabilities will encourage critical consideration of the statistics with which we are bombarded every day. On Wednesday 10 July Paul Stancliffe, Media Manager of The British Trust for Ornithology, will talk to us on bird migration. He will explain what we know and what we don’t know and how the BTO is using the very latest technology to uncover the mysteries of bird migration. We will follow cuckoos, nightingales and swifts as they undertake amazing journeys to and from their wintering grounds. Our meeting on August 14 is a member’s only event and will be held at the Venture Centre, Lawford CO11 2JE at the normal time. Further information will be given at the June and July meetings. ROTARY CLUB SUPPORTING AGAINST BREAST CANCER At the start of our new presidential year in July 2018, Manningtree Rotary Club made the decision to support the charity Against Breast Cancer by collecting bras on their behalf. We set ourselves a target to collect and fill 20 black bin liners. As we near the end of our yearlong collection, which will end at the end of June, we have to-date collected 18 bags, so if you have any unwanted bras we now need your help to reach our target. With the help of moss and tiny plants, she created what should grow into a colourful basket by summer. It was donated to the raffle and is still developing well. Jill Smith returns from the Floral Art Studio in Little Bromley for our meeting on June 20. We usually have one flower arranging meeting each year – something for everyone, not too fussy. Do come along; it should be a really good evening and everyone is welcome.

OUT & ABOUT FELIXSTOWE BOOK FESTIVAL Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 June
FABULOUS LAUNCH EVENT FOR MY BLUE PASS More than 80 young people braved hail, snow and gale force winds to take to the water off Manningtree beach in a free Beach Boat Bash put on by My Blue Pass, a new water sports charity, on Saturday, May 4. The charity has 140 signed-up young members who were given the opportunity to try out dinghies, kayaks and paddle boards and take out on the river in motor launches in challenging conditions and choppy waters and icy winds. The RNLI inshore lifeboat put in a brief appearance before being called out on a live emergency at sea. Younger children were entertained by Punch & Judy and magician Chris Maine, and all the participants were given free food and drink. The two winners of the Best Dressed Pirate competition were fouryear-old Samuel Francis from Lawford and six-year-old Holly Vincent from Wrabness. Prizes included a day out for four at Colchester Zoo and a meal for a family of four at Lucca’s. A total of £871 was raised by raffle. Stour Sailing Club, Vanguard Health Care, Concord Property, Essex Fire Service, the air cadets, local scouts were among supporters or participants. Garron Baines, chair of MBP, said: “Through their enthusiasm and excitement, these young people proved to the community the demand for young people to get out and have fun on the water and to learn the skills of sailing and kayaking.”
Felixstowe Book Festival is now one of the most important events in Suffolk’s calendar and Jackamans Solicitors is proud to have been a co-sponsor since the beginning. Now in its seventh year it is thriving, and continues to increase in the number and range of its events; broadening its appeal to individuals of virtually any age and reading taste. The festival offers a varied literary programme which includes authors’ events in four Felixstowe venues; a pop up festival on the seafront, at our historic fort and museum, and on the two rivers which border the town. This year there will also be a special package of writing workshops – being promoted to writing groups nationally – to attract aspiring writers to the festival. This will increase the festival’s profile and encourage a range of audiences from a larger geographical area. Last year more than 1,000 tickets were sold and this year the number is likely to increase. There is an exciting range of author events for both adults and children. The speakers include well-known and respected writers covering a wide range of genres and also debut novelists and those from writing groups. To demonstrate the festival’s diversity, authors include former politician Alan Johnson, Alison Weir (author of Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets) and Esther Freud (festival patron) and half-sister Annie Freud discussing Annie’s poetry. Children’s events are incredibly diverse and include Hotel Flamingo Drawalong with Alex Milway, Sutton Hoo Roadshow, Operation Buried Treasure with Ally Sherrick and Calling Mission Control. Spoilt for choice, you will have the pick of at least three speaker events each hour from early Saturday morning until Sunday evening. This format creates a warm and vibrant festival atmosphere. If you haven’t attended Felixstowe Book Festival before – or any book festival – do give this one a try! ON THE GRAPEVINE QUESTIONS ON CASH With Independent Financial Adviser Nick Plumb Alan from Ipswich asks: “I have been reading an article about Corporate Bond funds. It has been suggested that the banks mis-sold a lot of these instead of equity investments during the bear market, and they were pushed as a low risk investment, when in fact, there are risks with these investments just like stocks and shares. Are Corporate Bonds a good or bad investment?” It depends what you want them to do for you Alan. Although Corporate Bond funds can be a good way of preserving your capital against a falling stock market, their main benefit is for those investors who require an income. One of the easiest ways of investing into a Corporate Bond fund is through a collective investment like an OEIC or Unit Trust. The funds can also be purchased within an ISA wrapper if you have not used your ISA allowance, which is particularly useful if you are looking for income, as a Corporate Bond ISA will produce a more tax efficient income than an Equity Income ISA. From 6 April 1999, the amount of tax that could be reclaimed by ISA fund managers on dividends from equity-based funds was reduced from 20 to 10 per cent. This was reduced to zero from 6 April 2004. However, the tax reclaim on Corporate Bond funds is still 20 per cent, which means your ISA manager can reclaim all of the tax deducted back from the Inland Revenue. That makes them very attractive if you want a tax-efficient income from your money. One of the best Corporate Bond funds available if you need an income is the M&G High Yield Corporate Bond fund. This is a low to medium risk fund, which invests in a broad mix of bonds offering a higher than average yield. The fund has no bid/offer spread, initial charges or plan fees and has a low annual management charge of just 0.65 per cent per annum of the ISA fund value. The current natural income yield from the M&G High Yield Corporate Bond Fund is around 4.1 per cent net of investment charges, which can be paid monthly or quarterly as a tax-free income.
2019 NEW ANGLE PRIZE SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED Family, growing up and the impact of change in uniquely East Anglian communities are themes which permeate the six books on the shortlist for the 2019 New Angle Prize for Literature. The competition, organised by the Ipswich Institute, aims to celebrate and encourage excellence in the regional literature of East Anglia. There is an open entry format with no separate categories and the Judges have selected six varied works from an entry of thirty-five entries from which the £2,000 winner and £500 runner-up will be chosen. The competition is kindly sponsored by Gotelee Solicitors and Scrutton Bland accountants. The shortlist consists of three novels; All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison, Devoured by Anna Mackmin and The Great Level by Stella Tillyard; a volume of poetry with Esther Morgan’s The Wound Register; and two nonfiction works, Low Country, Brexit on the Essex Coast by Tom Bolton and Self & I by Matthew De Abaitu. The ultimate prize-winners will be announced at a presentation dinner to be held at Hintlesham Golf Club on Wednesday 3 July. This event, hosted by Leslie Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk, is an opportunity to meet the shortlisted authors and listen to the Judges’ review of all six books. Suffolk Libraries are running a Readers’ Choice competition in conjunction with the New Angle Prize and the winner will also be announced at this event. Tickets are £30, which includes a three-course meal with wine and full details are available from Ipswich Institute. 01473 253992 library@Ipswichinstitute.org.uk Twitter: @PrizeNewAngle www.ipswichinstitute.org.uk/new-angle

SPORT EAST BERGHOLT UNITED FC With the fixtures now concluded the club can look back on a successful season with a number of players making good progress, which augers well for the future. The club also maintained its position as the leading senior club in the Sportsmanship table. The 1st Team finished the season well. In fact, from the turn of the year they suffered only three defeats. There were 14 in total over the course of the season. So the results certainly show significant progress and the team will be looking to make further advances next season and to finish well above this season’s ninth place. The Reserves finished a creditable seventh in Intermediate A scoring 91 goals in the process. The A Team agonisingly just failed to gain promotion, finishing third in Intermediate C. The awards evening has been held. The winners were: 1st Team Players’ Player: Aaron Greenwood 1st Team Manager and Supporters’ Player: Kyle Jay Reserves Team Players’ Player: Will Harris

MISTLEY CRICKET CLUB

Men’s Cricket & Ladies Cricket
Manager Si Collinson writes: “This season has been challenging for the girls. Starting in a new division within regional football, together with changes in the squad and management has not been easy. However, we have now reached the end of the season and the feeling looking back is one of achievement. The girls are holding their own in the league and are regularly attracting praise for how much improvement they have shown. “The team reached the final of the Essex County Women’s Trophy. Although they lost out losing 3-2 on the day, the effort and stubbornness they showed to come back from 2-0 down at halftime was commendable. Overall, it was a very good season. I am so proud of how they have improved on and off the pitch since Christmas and after a well-earned break, cannot wait to help them push on to the next level in the new season.” Lawford U10s The U10s have had a decent season, enjoying their football at School Lane. They have already played two games in preparation for the 2019/2020 season, when they change format to 9v9 football. It’s going to be a challenge next season, moving up to 9v9 football. But it’s a challenge the boys are already looking forward to. The team are looking for new players for next season. BRANTHAM BOWLS CLUB Our first Suffolk Federation game resulted in a good win over Copdock/ Washbrook, winning on three rinks to secure six points. The Tendering Hundred League wasn’t so good, but we managed to win on one rink, losing narrowly on the other three against Clacton A. The Ipswich Triples League was a close, hard-fought game in which we won on two rinks to secure four points against Marlborough. Tony Watson
Meeting at Old St Michael’s School on Trinity Road, Manningtree Who has the Power? Just who is in control? Does the government have absolute power or does parliament? Or does the power really lie with the people? The papers are full of questions over the strength of the current government to achieve its desires, and if and when parliament should step in, or the people be invited to comment/decide. So what is power? And who really wields it? The Bible records a conversation between Almighty God and a good man called Job. Job wanted to know the answers to the great questions of life and God answered by asking a great many questions that Job could not answer. “Where were you when I established the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? What supports its foundations? Or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Have you travelled to the sources of the sea or walked in the depths of the oceans? Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of deep darkness?” Job 38: selected verses (CSB) This God who spoke with Job has visited us in the person of Jesus Christ, and we enjoy considering the record of His life and the Words He spoke each Sunday at our services and at other times. In Christ we have access to The Father and His power and we would share that with you. Our 5pm Service is designed for people who haven’t been to church before or want to come back, and we will be meeting Jesus with Matthew in these services. In the morning (10.30am) we are taking a broad brush look at the Bible. Beginning as it does at the start of time and tracing the whole of God’s interaction with humanity. Every Sunday is a celebration! Why not come and join us. Services last between 60 and 90 minutes and refreshments follow. Information on all our other activities can be found at: www.trinity-manningtree.org.uk

CHURCH NEWS BRANTHAM & CAPEL METHODIST CHURCHES AN UNCHANGING HOPE I’ve just watched the final episode of the third series of Victoria featuring the Great Exhibition of 1851, showcasing the technology and industry of the world in the mid-19th century. Prince Albert was the driving force behind this great enterprise. What changes have taken pace in the intervening 168 years, from the great steam engines to the driverless cars of today! There have been six monarchs in the UK and 30 prime ministers (as of May 13). My maternal grandfather was born midway through Victoria’s reign in 1867. For me it is quite close to the numerous changes that have taken place over his and my lifetimes. We have just had a visit from our nephew who, with his wife, have bought a property in France which they are renovating. Because they are not yet living there full time, they have bought a robotic lawnmower to keep the grass cut in their absence. I’m feeling my technology is now way behind, not that I need to have the latest gismo! My current mobile phone is dying and needs replacing and I am bewildered at the choice available. Contrast that with the constancy preaching of my grandfather starting in 1884, and my preaching today. The message is the same: the offer of new life in Christ, the gift of forgiveness of sins, the hope of an eternity in heaven with Christ. All this is made possible by Jesus who died for us upon the cross and rose from the dead. Peter describes it as being given new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It’s a message that is still relevant. The context may have changed, but the need for forgiveness is as great as ever, the need to have purpose and meaning still powerful, the need to love and be loved, to belong, the need to hope for something not just for this life, but for eternity. I’m still in the process of being transformed. Jesus is still working on me. Will you be open to his work in your life? I am convinced He loves you.

BENEFICE OF EAST BERGHOLT AND BRANTHAM Rector: The Rev Canon Stephne van der Toorn 01206 392646 / revstephvdt@googlemail.com www.constablecountrychurches.co.uk RAMBLING RECTOR By the time you read this I will have walked more than 115kms from Valenca do Minho in Portugal to Santiago de Compestela in Spain (the Way of St James) – I am allowing for getting lost and short detours and will no doubt be feeling a bit weary but hopefully not too footsore. One of the pilgrims said to me: “I am frightened, Steph,” and went on to give the reason, “because on pilgrimage, things happen!” And there you have it. The Christian life is a pilgrimage and we expect things to happen. Life in the Lord is never boring. Challenging, stimulating, puzzling, comforting, cross-making, infinitely rewarding – yes, all these things, but never boring! I will be accompanied by 11 other pilgrims and one monkey until day seven and thereafter by 13 pilgrims and one monkey. Family@Church are giving me Koko the monkey to accompany me along the way as Coco my guide dog cannot. I expect we will have many adventures. Some of the pilgrims are religious, some are not. I confidently expect many great discussions, excellent food and wine and some mischief. The Rev Steph SERVICES IN JUNE Saturday 1 2.30pm Wedding: Michelle Wilson and Adam Bessent, EB

The weekly newsletter, with weekly mass times, is always displayed in the cabinet alongside the front door of the church. Catholic Commentary Numbers attending Holy Week Services and on Easter Sunday were high as usual with special thanks to our parish priest Fr Peter Raj who led and encouraged our participation, beginning with Ash Wednesday and through the period of Lent. The extended period of Eastertide leads us through to Pentecost Sunday followed by more significant liturgical celebrations as mentioned above. Sadly the big church celebrations seem little understood by many today, but for those seeking a grounding for life’s ups and downs or answers to moral questions, the church has much to offer. Pilgrimages remain popular and people will

be going to such places as Lourdes or Rome or Medjugorje, or even to Israel/West Bank (the Holy Land). Medieval Suffolk was a very religious area with more than 500 churches and today those same churches are greatly prized and cared for even if their use has been changed in some instances, such as St Stephens in Ipswich now serving as the tourist information office. Christian theology is full of hope or optimism, especially in the Easter season. There are also rational grounds for hope in spite of the many awful things that happen and are reported. Put simply, most of life goes on normally and is not reported on, but there is always work to be done to bring about a more just and peaceful world. Church members and organisations ever seek to make a contribution alongside others of goodwill. Events & Diary Dates The 100 Club draw took place on Sunday, May 19 at Holy Family when three lucky winners shared a £161 prize pot. The next draw takes place on June 23 at Holy Family, Brantham. New members are always very welcome and the newsletter, which includes an application form, can be found at the rear of the church or online at: www.stmarksparish.org.uk Every last Thursday of the month a Bring & Buy Coffee Morning takes place at Viv & Wyn’s home, Paddock Gate, Whitehorse Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TR from 10.30am to noon. We are raising funds for a new carpet for the parish room and all are very welcome to join us. The next event will be on Thursday, June 27. Supporting our Local Hospice All parishioners are asked to collect used postage stamps, all year, not just at Christmas, and place them in the box at the rear of the church to help support the outstanding work of our local hospice. The Sick & Homebound Fr Jeremiah Matthias is the Ipswich Hospital Chaplain and he can be contacted on 07951 066607. Please let him know as soon as possible if a friend or relative has been admitted. Please let Fr Peter know of anyone who is ill at home or homebound, so that they can receive appropriate pastoral care. All are very welcome to attend Holy Family services; it’s not necessary to be a Catholic and enquiries about the Catholic faith are always welcome. Please contact the presbytery, as above, or a local person whom you know is a Catholic.
