A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published! Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments.

30 YEARS OF BOOK FAIRS TO HELP CHILDREN Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the NSPCC’s annual Colchester Book Fair will take place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October at Holmwood House School, Chitts Hill, Lexden CO3 9ST, a short distance from Junction 26 of the A12. The fair will be open from 9.30am until 4pm on both days and entry is £1.50 for adults, with under-16s free. The event attracts book enthusiasts from far and near, with around 35,000 new and second-hand books, many now out of print. Games, DVDs, CDs and jigsaws, all tried and tested to avoid disappointment, are also included in the sale, which is re-stocked on the second day. During the past few months, all the donated items have been meticulously sorted into categories by a dedicated team of volunteers to help visitors find their chosen subject or favourite author easily. To date, the Colchester Book Fair has raised more than £400,000 for the children’s charity. Nearly 90 per cent of the NSPCC’s revenue comes from legacies, gifts, donations and fundraising activities. This highlights just how important public support is to the organisation in enabling it to continue its work protecting vulnerable children and campaigning for their rights and safety.

REPORT TO PARISH, BRANTHAM WARD: OCTOBER 2019 Babergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw A Quiet Month? The month of August is normally a relatively quiet one in councils. People have holidays and there tend to be fewer meetings. I thought this month I’d go through my diary and emails for the last four weeks (to September 10) and try and give a flavour of activity. In the process, you may get some insights into your council’s work in areas that are not usually reported. Funnily enough, the first email asks whether Babergh have a five-year land supply. The most recent one answers that. Babergh have published their Land Supply Statement at 5.67 years. This strengthens our hand in considering the more speculative applications that rely on that weakness. It directly affects consideration of at least two major Applications, including Slough Road.

Around this time, I was taking a fair number of emails, messages or calls regarding the Taylor Wimpey/Regeneration Area and associated works. Without going into every single question, I’m in regular contact with all the parties involved. That’s sometimes daily, but always weekly. Acting as a gobetween for you and the village has been, and will be, a constant job for years to come. Keeping the lines of communication open is the only way we’re going to be able to cope. The same applies to other major planning applications coming forward right now. Brooklands Farm and Church Field both come to mind here. I’m told that an exhibition for the latter is due shortly. (It may have happened by now!) I attended the CIFCO AGM on August 15. I didn’t agree with setting up an investment company for a council, but it’s a fact and we must make sure it’s as sound as it needs to be. It’s producing an income equivalent to about 12 per cent of our Council Tax share. A short-term paper loss in value would only matter if CIFCO were to sell those assets. That’s unlikely as they are only 15 per cent invested in retail, and not the worst bit of retail. I’ll add that Scrutiny have spent a great deal of time examining CIFCO. The Joint Scrutiny committee generally doesn’t take August off. We met on August 19 when the major item was a project we’ve been preparing for since June. The future funding for Citizens Advice was a major worry in the county last budget time. That long term problem hasn’t gone away. We are trying to launch a cross boundary (Suffolk wide) Scrutiny process to examine the service, funding and impacts of CAB. This has to be done right now, before the next budgets are prepared. District and borough councils provide the largest share of funding. We all know how much good work it does, relieving pressures elsewhere. One constant theme of recent emails has been the enormous range of opinions raised over Belle Vue Park, House and potential hotel in Sudbury. I’m sure that most here will have as much interest in this as Sudbury residents have regarding any situation in Brantham. However, the council has responsibilities here and decisions to make. Any active councillor must be aware of the issues involved, if only to make good decisions and protect public money. There are times though when it’s all become rather personal and I can’t see that helping the situation. At the end of the month, with my colleagues on holiday, I gave a report to the Mid Suffolk Cabinet on Scrutiny recommendations. Summary: Agree funding for three years at least. Support County wide Scrutiny to avoid the same problem again. There’s a constant flood of emails. They should be dealt with almost immediately, or you fall behind. There are meetings with residents, developers, officers, the parish council and committees. A lot of this stuff kind of joins up, but it’s easy to miss something. If you don’t get a response from me in two days, try again. This was a quiet month, so I had a short holiday as well. This weekend I have the Suffolk Historic Churches Ride and Stride. It’s one of my favourite rides each year. My thanks to all my sponsors, particularly the ‘Bike Doctor’ who keeps the Blue Claud Butler on the road. See many of you soon! CONSTABLE COUNTRY PRACTICE Appointment System Update The practice implemented a new appointment system on September 2. We held two patient engagement events in July and have been trialling the system on Tuesdays. This has enabled us to refine the new system based on patient feedback, though it will continue to evolve over the coming weeks. Please note that there will be no pre-bookable appointments. If you need to speak to a doctor you can request that they call you the same day. If you need to be seen (about a third of all cases), the doctor will arrange for you to be seen the same day or on a future date. Patients can make an online request for a doctor to call from 7am, or phone the practice or call in to request one via a receptionist. It helps if you tell the receptionist the nature of your problem as it may be more appropriate for you to speak to our pharmacy technician or another member of our clinical team. They can also inform the doctor if your need is urgent. There may also be other NHS healthcare organisations or other clinical staff who are better equipped to address your problem or answer your query. Flu Clinics As last year, patients over-65 will be administered a different flu vaccine to those under-65. Unfortunately, there have again been delays in manufacture which means that delivery of the under-65’s vaccine is staged. This complicates the vaccination programme and we will therefore implement a similar system to last year. We will hold a number of flu clinics and will send personalised letters to every eligible patient inviting them to attend on specific dates. These letters will be sent through September and October. Please attend on the earliest date possible when you receive a letter. Please don’t attend a flu clinic if you don’t receive a letter as we may not have taken delivery of the vaccine you require. If you haven’t received a letter by the end of October and you are over-65 or believe you are eligible for a free vaccination because of your medical condition, please contact the practice.
Minutes can be collected from the parish office by prior arrangement as the offices are not open to the public.
CONSTABLE COUNTRY PPG New Appointment System In July, PPG Vice Chair Mike Huard and I visited the GP practice at Leiston to discuss their experience of using the call back system, which they introduced early in 2018. They told us that patient feedback had been very positive. We hope that you have the same positive experience with the new system at Constable Country Practice, but if you do have any issues please let the practice manager know using the feedback forms. Alternatively you can fill in one of the PPG comment cards or email us at: constablecountryppg@gmail.com OneLife Suffolk At our July meeting we had a very informative talk by a representative of OneLife Suffolk. They are employed by the Public Health arm of Suffolk County Council to provide services to people across the county. Their services include help with losing weight, becoming more fit and active, stopping smoking, providing fun physical activities for children and young people including holiday clubs and in-school activities. Leaflets are available at the surgery and you can find out more at: www.onelifesuffolk.co.uk / 01473 718193 Getting Help to Get Active Janet Lawrence from Suffolk’s Active Wellbeing Service will be working at the practice every Thursday. Any member of staff can refer a patient. The service is free and patients will meet with Janet to discuss how they can incorporate more activity in their daily routines. Please ask for more information at either surgery. Issues with the Pharmacy at Capel Surgery We continue to receive comments on the service at the pharmacy in Capel. As you will know, it’s a separate business from the Constable Country practice. We would encourage you to register any compliments or concerns you have either on the Healthwatch Suffolk website – www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk – or on one of the PPG comment cards. PPG Chair Kathy Pollard: 01473 311384
LAWFORD SURGERY On Saturday 21 September, Lawford Surgery plans to hold their first flu clinic vaccination session to start at 10am. Anyone with a chronic disease, over 65 years old or who is eligible, is requested to call the surgery to arrange an appointment: 01206 392617 We will be holding two sessions of flu clinics as again this year we have been informed of a delay with the supply of some of the vaccines. Please telephone for information.

On these afternoons the Capel St Mary building will be open to enable access to the pharmacy, but reception will be closed. East Bergholt reception will be open. NEWS / OUT & ABOUT RIVERSIDE HEALTH CENTRE News from the Dispensary Consent Forms We have been collecting consent forms which authorise a third party to collect for you for a couple of months now and inputting the details on to our patient records. We will now be checking that we do have a consent form in place if a third party comes to collect for you, and may have to refuse giving out the medication if not. Please ask the dispensary for further information and the form to complete if you haven’t already done so. You don’t need to complete this form if you have already given consent for a third party to have access to all of your medical records. Text Messages The sending of a text to inform patients that their medication is ready to collect has been a great success for our patients and for the dispensary staff. Therefore, we will be continuing this service. Please ensure that we have the correct mobile number for you in order to receive these messages. If you wish to opt out of receiving text messages from Riverside Health Centre please inform a member of staff. Repeat Request If you order your medication using a repeat slip, please post it either in the red box inside the entrance to Riverside Health Centre or, if we are closed, through the postbox. There really is no need to hand it to a dispenser unless you have a query. Taking Medicines Abroad During the holiday season we often get asked about taking medication abroad. Unfortunately, as all countries have different rules, it’s up to you to check what rules apply to you, and the country you are visiting or passing through. Some countries do not allow certain medicines even if you brought them over the counter in the UK so always check with your airline or the embassy of the country. If your medicine contains a controlled drug, you will need to prove that it is prescribed to you, and if you are travelling for at least three months or have three months’ supply with you, you will need a licence. You may need a letter from your GP which we can be provided at a charge. For information visit: www.nhs.uk / www.gov.uk Medication Shortages As highlighted by the news recently, we are having problems in ordering certain medications due to national shortages. There are many reasons as to why there is a shortage and we do try our best to obtain the product or an alternative agreed by a clinician. It’s not the fault of the dispensary staff and I would urge you to be patient with us as we try to investigate other options for you. Dispensary Manager Laura Shemming

Refreshments will be provided in the interval. Tickets are £8 and can be obtained from St Mary’s: office@lawfordchurch.co.uk / 01206 230658

Highlights of the concert will include Schubert’s Impromptu in G Flat, Puccini’s Mio Babbino Caro (from Giani Schichi) and Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe (from The Mission).
Can you help? Do you enjoy sewing, being creative and part of a team?
The performers include a variety of well-known local and East Anglian artistes including Richard Blay (Baritone) and Alastair Blay (Piano and Classical Guitar) from Elmtree Music, Lindsay Gowers (Soprano) and Ian Ray (Piano Accompanist), Jennie Francis (Flute) and John Reynard (Euphonium).
We have a friendly fun-loving costume team who need some more help and ideas for costuming and dressing our shows. Sewing skills would be great, but not essential as there are always loads of other jobs that need doing such as sticking, trimming and finishing.
Proceeds from the concert will be going partly to St Mary’s and partly to Rotary supported charities.

EAST BERGHOLT DRAMATIC SOCIETY Proudly presents The Inaccurate Conception, a comedy by Richard Ahsam and Geoff Saunders. The school nativity play is usually everyone’s first brush with the theatre. STOUR VALLEY U3A On Wednesday 9 October, Jenny Gibbs will talk to us on An Englishwoman’s Life in Rural Turkey. Her stories capture a simple, serene, pastoral way of life in a Turkish mountain village unchanged for centuries, from the day she first arrived there 25 years ago to today. On November 13 Magistrate Graham Higgins will talk of Tales From The Bench. He will look at our legal heritage, particularly the part played by Suffolk. He will relate how the role of magistrates and local events have played a part in this history and will bring us up to date with an opportunity to decide how a defendant should be sentenced by briefly outlining a case. He will also include some of his unusual experiences on the bench. We have Christmas lunch instead of a meeting in December and this year it’s being held on Wednesday 11 December at the Ipswich Best Western Hotel, Copdock IP8 3JD. This is always a very popular event so an early reservation is advised. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. COLCHESTER CREDIT UNION IN MANNINGTREE Find out more at the HUB (next door to the Mogul) on Friday mornings Supported by Tendring District Council and Colchester Borough Council, Colchester Credit Union is open every Friday morning from 10am-noon in the informal setting of an allage drop-in, operating from a separate table, respecting savers’ confidentiality. While Credit Unions are still relatively rare in this area, they are much more widespread in Australia, the United States, Ireland and the North of England. They are regulated like banks, and savings are completely safe and easily accessible. Anyone who can’t visit a collection point can arrange access by phone or email and use direct debits for saving. Credit Unions are for everyone: • for anyone who wants a loan (available to regular savers after 13 weeks’ membership) • for anyone who just wants to save Credit Union deposits have a positive impact on local communities: • They provide loans at reasonable rates to people who might otherwise not get a loan or be driven to doorstep lenders • Most loans are spent within the community, for decorating or improving the home, for car repairs, for school uniforms, etc. • Credit Unions only use ethical investments for their funds
The autumn show has now taken place and was enjoyed by a loyal, happy group of members and friends. The standard of exhibits was as high as usual although the numbers were unfortunately down this year, for a number of reasons. The Dahlias and Chrysanthemums were spectacular and made a beautiful sight inside Ogilvie Hall. Many thanks to all who exhibited and visited, and especially those who helped set up on the Friday evening and during the show itself. Our last meeting was thoroughly enjoyed by a large group who were keen to see old photographs and hear all about 100 Years of Lawford by Peter Gant. It was a very interesting evening. Thank you. On October 17 we are expecting to hear from Alan Bourne on The Making of Perrywood Nurseries, so please do come along to support us and hopefully we will have another good evening.
CAPEL COUNTRYSIDE CLUB Our meeting in September started with a vote on an idea to merge with Suffolk Wildlife Trust Group to try and increase members and visitors to our meetings. After a lot of discussion with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the committee decided to put the idea to members at our meeting. Everybody present unanimously voted to stay as we are, as a village club (of 35 years standing) and the majority wanted to carry on meeting on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm in Capel Methodist Church. A talk followed on The Diary of a Norfolk Parson. This was a fascinating talk about James Woodford, a parson in the 18th century, and gave an insight into the life of the parson through his diary which he wrote every day throughout his life. It was set in the village of Weston near Norwich.
On average, Colchester Credit Union grants three loans per month. The amounts lent vary greatly from £50 to well over a thousand.
Our meeting on October 8 is a talk on the Isles of Scilly and its Wildlife, which promises to be popular. On November 12 Alex Bass will give a presentation on North Norfolk Coast, its Wildlife and Landscape, which we hope will appeal to members and visitors.
Note: loans are available to regular savers after 13 weeks’ membership and the amount loaned depends on the amount saved.
Refreshments are available after talks with time for questions to our speakers. Visitors are always welcome.

IT STARTS WITH YOU The following article has been submitted by Mia Lloyd who first introduces herself and the climate change campaign she’s involved with. I urge you to read her article and I hope many of you will sign her petition. My name’s Mia Lloyd and I’m one of the two founders of a climate change campaign called It Starts with You. I’ve always been interested in the environmental issues that we face, having grown up in Brantham surrounded by countryside, but I never thought that a 15 year old could do anything to help. Seeing the work young people like Greta Thunberg have been doing, I was inspired to start my own campaign, and do as much as I could in the fight against climate change. We also have a petition on change.org to get local towns involved in our campaign.
We are now at the point where if the temperature of the earth rises by as little as 1.5 degrees we will lose any control over our existence. At the current rate of carbon emissions, this could happen in less than 15 years. We don’t have billions of years for the fossil fuels we are digging up and burning to return to the ground, so we must stop. It doesn’t get simpler than that. To avoid the 1.5 degrees Celsius warming, CO2 emissions would have to be eliminated by the year 2050. In comparison, some scientists say if all countries met their current 2030 target of lower carbon emissions, the 1.5 degrees Celsius rise would only be delayed by half a year. But those who contribute the most to the destruction of our planet seem to care more about their money than the future of humanity. We must try our very best not to give these people money. There are other ways to live. But even more than becoming a vegetarian, or not buying plastic bottles, it is of utmost importance that we tell the rule makers that we have had enough. It is time for the world to take action. We have all heard the speeches, seen the protests on TV, retweeted a call for help. But now we must do more than putting posts on our Instagram story. We must listen to the speeches, go to the protests, and we must rebel over and over and over again until those who make the rules, change them. All too often we think we have no power, that the real power lies in 10 Downing Street, in the White House, in the palaces and the governments and those who
do not listen to us. But the real power is with the people. If we try, if we really try, there will be change, for the simple reason that there must be. There are some who say, “Why try? One person cannot make a difference. It’s too late now”. But no matter what the chances of success may be, we must have faith or the earth will die. As soon as an animal stops running from its predator, it dies. As soon as we stop holding our breath when we are trapped under water, we die. As soon as enough of us say “It’s no use, I have given up”, we all die. It’s not always the thing we are fighting that kills us, but our lack of faith. And we must not now look for faith in our governments, or in our religions, because hope for change will not save us. We must look for faith in each other, because only real change can. I will not lie, it is true that this fight will be the biggest and hardest of many of our lives, but it will be the one that means the most, and it must be the one that we win. And it is true, that we may not all deserve that victory, but one day there may be people who will. They may thank us for saving their planet, for fighting, because if we don’t there won’t be anyone to thank us at all. Doing nothing is no longer an option. In order to survive we must keep going, keep fighting for our earth and for ourselves, keep running, keep holding our breath. Keep believing that we can save the earth. And then maybe we will.

SUFFOLK LIBRARIES YOUTH TAKEOVER FESTIVAL This autumn, Suffolk Libraries’ youth-led arts programme BLOC – Building Libraries on Creativity will be hosting a mix of events for their Takeover Festival, which takes place on Saturday 9 November. The Takeover Festival will run with the tagline ‘Suffolk Youth – Our Art, Our Voice’ and will have an array of art workshops, including music, dance, poetry, digital, virtual reality, painting and drawing. There will also be talks and an exhibition displaying artworks from students and young people around the county. The theme of the festival is celebrating youth voice and young Suffolk creativity, as well as to show a more artistic side to our county’s library service. The festival will be presented by the BLOC programme, run by Suffolk Libraries and funded by Arts Council England. Ipswich Library will be the centre of the festival, with workshops running from 11am to 5pm and live music from 6.30pm to 11pm. Libraries around Suffolk will be invited to run fringe events and exhibitions with a focus on young people and the arts to link up with the Takeover Festival. Sally Garwood, Creative Programmes Assistant for Suffolk Libraries, said: “We are so proud of our Youth Council for putting together a festival to support youth engagement in the arts, particularly for those without ready access to cultural activities. We are passionate about showcasing regional talent and supporting developing young artists.” The Takeover Festival is entirely youth-led in what events and activities will take place, with contributions from YAIS (Young Artists in Suffolk) in the programming.
We will be immunising ages tow-four with the nasal spray and we will write to parents as soon as the centrally supplied NHS vaccine becomes available. Some primary school children may well receive the nasal spray immunisation at school. Changes to Prescriptions Please be aware, new regulation from the EU, called the Falsified Medicines Directive require your prescription to be collected within seven working days from the dispensary. The directive is to ensure further safety of medication, but will add additional administration to the dispensary team. What it means for you: If you do not pick up your medication strictly within the seven days, the items will need to be destroyed which will be a cost to the NHS and you would need to order again and wait two further working days for your medication to be dispensed again. Hence, it is really important, now more than ever, that medications ordered are picked up in a timely manner and must be collected within seven days of ordering. HRT Shortages HRT shortages are nationwide and have been widely publicised in the media. This can mean different HRT types are going in and out of stock and the dispensary and GPs cannot know for sure what is in, or out of stock at any given time. Please be aware this may mean we have to switch your HRT to the next most similar and available type. Ardleigh Car Park We would like to remind you that the car park is for blue badge holders or parents with children under five years old only. There are only three parking spaces directly outside Ardleigh Surgery. Please use the village car park wherever possible, it’s free and only a short walk from the practice. Please take care not to block or park in the staff car park as this can block the duty doctor or nurses and prevent them from getting out on their house calls.
Sally added that: “We felt it was important for our Youth Council to be given free rein, to completely takeover Ipswich Library, leading on all aspects of event production and build a programme of events to encourage and stimulate youth culture. We can’t wait to celebrate the day with them.”
New Website Ardleigh Surgery has a new website which is user friendly and has access to our registration forms, travel forms and contact information. On the website there are some useful links to self-help/self-referrals to different local services and pages explaining self-management of common conditions.

SCHOOLS / SPORTS MANNINGTREE HIGH SCHOOL While the students have been away from school during the summer, Manningtree High School has still been a very busy place with lots of building work across the school site. We are in the process of building a new performing arts block and a materials workshop and store on the side of the site near the sports centre. In the centre of the school, a new block will provide two science classrooms, a science prep room, IT suite, general classrooms, new office space and toilets. This expansion gives us the potential to take up to 30 more students in each year group in the future. We will certainly have to find new routes for our tours of the school during our upcoming transition events this October. For more information on those please visit: www.manningtreehigh.com
MISTLEY CRICKET CLUB Men’s & Ladies Cricket Results have continued to be somewhat inconsistent for the First and Second Team, but the Third Team won their last four games. The Sunday sides have continued their good form and the Ladies have been very impressive as usual. With just a single game remaining, Mistley’s 1st XI are guaranteed a seventh place finish in Two Counties Division One and the 2nd XI have mathematically assured their survival in Division Three. ON THE GRAPEVINE PERSONAL FINANCE WITH NICK PLUMB Do you value your life? Most people take out insurance for their home contents and their buildings and have motor insurance to protect their cars. Some people even have insurance for their pets, but more than 60 per cent of the people I meet as a financial adviser do not have enough life insurance in place to properly protect their family if they die prematurely. Unfortunately, life insurance is one of those products that the majority of people don’t have just when it is needed most. And if you don’t have it when you need it – it’s already too late to do anything about it. Taking out life insurance is something that many people are quite unsure about, typically prompting questions like; “How much cover do I need?”, “How long do I need it for?” and “How much will it cost?”. The following is intended to answer some of the questions you may have, and will hopefully persuade you to contact a financial adviser to review your own insurance arrangements sooner rather than later. Do I need life insurance? If you have an outstanding mortgage or if you have dependent children, you need life insurance. It’s that simple. If you bring an income into the household, or if you care for children who are financially dependent upon you, then there will be a financial cost to your family if you die. If the main ‘bread winner’ dies, their salary will have to be replaced. If the partner who cares for your children dies, their duties will have to be taken up by someone who will need to be paid for their services, so that their partner can continue to work and earn. If you have an outstanding mortgage, having insurance that pays off the mortgage will not only ensure that your family will have a roof over their heads, but will also save your spouse or partner the cost of monthly mortgage repayments – usually one of your biggest financial commitments each month. How much will it cost? The cost of life insurance depends on two factors: How much cover you need, and how long you want the cover to last for. Factors such as your age, sex, occupation, health condition and whether you smoke or not are all taken into account when calculating how much your insurance
will cost. This is called the ‘underwriting’ process. The important thing to remember is that it need not cost the earth and getting a quote costs nothing. How much life cover do I need? If you’re the main breadwinner, you will obviously want to maintain your family’s lifestyle so that they do not encounter any financial hardship. If you care for children or other dependents, then your partner will need to provide cash for professionals to take over your role. As a guide, the figure should be enough to replace around 80 per cent of your net earnings (you will be entitled to some state benefits) or at least £20,000 for professional child care each year. How long for? I would normally recommend family protection lasts until the youngest child is aged 21 years, which ensures that your children will have the opportunity to go through university and will reach financial independence. For a mortgage, you should protect the whole of the outstanding term of the loan. Where do I buy it from? To ensure you get the very best deal, you should always take independent financial advice when buying life insurance. Never trust a bank or building society to give you the best deal on your life insurance or mortgage protection, unless their adviser is independent and has searched the entire marketplace for you. Banks and building societies are usually tied to one company or a small group of companies, and that means that they rarely offer the best premium rates for life insurance. Take my Insurance Challenge and save yourself some cash today! If you have a life insurance policy or mortgage protection policy that was arranged for you by your bank or building society, or by an adviser tied to one company, I am confident that in at least 90 per cent of cases, I will be able to find you a policy that offers the same or better benefits for a lower monthly cost. Just give me a call or e-mail me with the policy details (the amount of cover, policy term, and premium, and your date of birth and smoking status) and I will call you back with a free no-obligation quote.

Have you every planned a trip or a holiday? You’ve got the brochures out, searched the website and seen wonderful pictures of your chosen destination. In your mind you can anticipate the beauty, the luxury, the relaxation, the fun and the activities. In the days or weeks before you make the trip these pictures are imprinted on your memory. We can easily forget what the process of getting there involves packing, travelling, queuing, security checks, baggage carousels, transfers and different languages. When we do arrive at the destination, the pictures in the brochure might have been misleading, taken with wide angle lens. The beach may not be so close, there are other developments crowding your place. Even if the place is exactly as the pictures portrayed, your mind remembers something you forgot to do before you left, or a project planned for the future that you start to worry about. Or you have a migraine developing after the travel, or are sleep deprived because of a different time zone, or you are bitten by an insect, or aches or pains make themselves noticed. If we are staying with a spouse or a friend, we are irritated by them or an old feud, or disagreement comes to the surface. The joy of anticipation is thwarted by the realisation that you have inadvertently bought yourself to this destination. When we were at home, we could blame our moods on the weather, or the politics of the day, or the pressure of work or family commitments. We assumed azure skies, palm beaches and luxury hotels would bring happiness but we bring our emotional and psychological baggage with us. We need to be understood, loved and respected. If we have been hurt, rejected or are holding resentment we may struggle, blue skies or not. It’s always good to try to keep relationships with family and friends good, but there is something even deeper than that. Our relationship with the created order and the creator. To know that we are loved by God, to keep that relationship right. That’s a tall order, for all of us have messed up and God knows even if no one else does. In Jesus Christ there is the offer of forgiveness, because Jesus died on a cross to pay the penalty for my sin. Jesus offers us “peace with God”, he wants to restore joy in our lives, he wants us to live life to the full. God hasn’t offered a life free from trouble or suffering, but he has offered his peace in our hearts in the midst of trouble. He has offered the hope of eternal life, of heaven. I have great anticipation of that ultimate destination, but I still have many destinations on the journey that keep me full of anticipation. CHURCH NEWS MANNINGTREE METHODIST CHURCH Welcome to Manningtree Benefice, an all-age Anglican Church, meeting in St Lawrence Church, Bradfield, and St Mary & St Michael’s Church, Mistley. As I write, our country is torn. For the last few days, Parliament has been debating Brexit with renewed vigour, and we are currently on the verge of a general election. By the time you read this, we may well have a new government, and it’s possible that we may no longer be members of the EU. For many of us, these are the most momentous political events of our lives. As Christians, we are praying for unity and restoration across our communities. Whatever happens, and whatever our views, our shared humanity and, I believe, our need for God, are what unite us.

CHURCH NEWS BENEFICE OF EAST BERGHOLT & BRANTHAM Rector: The Rev Canon Stephne van der Toorn 01206 392646 / revstephvdt@googlemail.com www.constablecountrychurches.co.uk RAMBLING RECTOR On September 2 Eric Falla joined us as our curate. He is in full-time secular employment and will be with us on Sundays and two days a month midweek. Hello, I am the Reverend Eric Falla. I was born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex on 24 September 1960. My father came to England from the Channel Islands in 1952 to marry my mother. My mother died when I was six and my father in 2014. I am the second youngest of four and have a twin sister Sara who is five minutes younger than me. I came to faith at the age 10, joining a large parish church choir of 30 boys. When my voice broke I ended up with a tenor voice. I also became an altar server at 15 and was given permission to administer the chalice at the age of 16. I have served on three PCCs in different churches and before ordination I was a churchwarden and elder. I left school at 16 and have had many jobs since leaving. I have been a baker, bus conductor, milkman and soldier, and worked in HM Prison Service for 17 years as a vocational instructor and then promoted to governor. I left this in 2000, moving to be a site supervisor at a large high school and then as pub landlord. I am married to Vicky who I met at church and have been blessed to be in our 36th year of marriage. Vicky and I moved to Suffolk in 1993, first to Beccles, then to Framlingham and finally to Ipswich in 2006. I have been employed at the diocesan office in Ipswich since 2006, where I work in the property team undertaking general maintenance work in diocesan houses covering the whole of Suffolk. I was ordained priest on 29 June 2019 at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. I am a self-supporting minister, which means I work full-time in a secular job as well as undertaking the role of an ordained priest for the Church of England. I have been trained for ordination on the newly formed Auxiliary Ordination pathway created by our Bishops Martin and Mike. I have always felt a calling to ordained ministry and feel blessed to have been chosen to serve Christ in this way.
Invitatin to a Service of Memories At the beginning of November, the church celebrates All Saints’ and the next day All Souls’, the commemoration of the Faithful Departed. There will be an opportunity for anyone who has lost someone they love either recently or long ago, to remember them especially in a simple service at St Michael’s, Brantham at 3.30pm on Saturday 2 November. There will be three ways for remembering. A bowl will be placed at the back of both St Mary’s and St Michael’s from Saturday 19 October and removed on Saturday 2 November. Please write the names of those you remember before God on the paper provided and place the paper in the bowl. The names of those for whom we have conducted services in the last year will be read out from our records so you don’t need to write these down unless you wish to. During the All Souls’ Service at St Michael’s, Brantham the bowl with all the names will be brought up and placed gently on the altar at the beginning of the service. These names will not be read out; they will be silently offered to God. Secondly, there will be an opportunity to light a candle during the service. A lit candle is a symbol both of God’s presence with us and of our prayers offered to him. Thirdly, the names of those on our records who have died during the last year will be read aloud. Please accept this invitation to the All Souls’ Service, a special time of remembering. You don’t need to reply to this invitation, and anyone who wishes to come is most welcome on the day. We are praying for you. Rev Steph First Aid Training Michael Mann, a registered and qualified instructor with Nuco Training Ltd, will deliver a one-off six-hour training session at St Mary’s Church, East Bergholt from 2pm on November 16. Cost £30. Anyone interested please contact Liz Digby on 01473 312281 to book or for further details.
Since ordination I have been serving in a large urban parish of 15,000 people in Ipswich. I am really excited at the prospect of serving in the Benefice of East Bergholt and Brantham, and working alongside Stephne and all the people in the benefice and deanery. CATHOLIC COMMENTARY We have said farewell and big thank you to our parish priest, Fr Peter Raj, who has moved to another Ipswich parish after just one year at St Marks with Holy Family, Brantham. He’s a popular priest who has scarcely had time to settle in, but it’s hardly surprising in these times of fewer vocations to the priesthood and parish clustering. We welcome Fr Paul Vincent and in the announcement from Bishop Alan Hopes we were promised two priests from the Carmelite Order with the possibility of even a third member to form a small Carmelite community at the presbytery in Ipswich. We were also reminded how a small community of Franciscans ran our parish a few decades ago. The British Social Attitudes Survey including a battery of religious questions was published recently. The headlines showed a continuous decline in the number of Britons identifying as Christian; 38 per cent this time, down from 66 per cent in 1983. ‘No religion’ is now the default setting at 52 per cent. Those who are dismayed at this decline may well take comfort from other findings from the Theos Think Tank that regularly publishes research papers to stimulate debate about the place of religion in society. A surprising statistic on its website shows the world as 80 per cent religious, predicted to rise to 90 per cent by 2050. Why are we in this country disengaging with Christianity? EVENTS AND DIARY DATES The 100 Club draw took place on Sunday 22 September at Holy Family when three lucky winners shared a £165 prize pot. The next draw takes place on Sunday 13 October. New members are always very welcome and the newsletter, that includes an application form, can be found at the rear of the church or at: www.stmarksparish.org.uk Every last Thursday of the month a Bring & Buy Coffee Morning takes place at Viv and Wyn’s home, Paddock Gate, Whitehorse Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TR from 10.30am to noon. We are raising funds for the new carpet in the Parish Room and all are very welcome to join us. The next event will be on Thursday 31 October.

Meeting at Old St. Michael’s School on Trinity Road, Manningtree Climate Change: Inescapable Catastrophe or Chance Moment? October contains the fourth Global Climate Change Week (14-20) an event organised by and for academic institutions “to engage with each other, their communities, and policy makers on climate change action and solutions”. Earlier this year we saw the birth of Extinction Rebellion, a more radical movement with similar aims. All over the world people are realising our planet matters and many are running scared from the possibilities that we face. But should we? Is this the right response? Are we heading for an inescapable catastrophe or not? Is this the chance moment for action or is it too late?
To advertise in this section, which appears in 18 magazines in areas across Suffolk and Essex, please contact a member of our sales team on 01473 400380
During October we will be looking at this issue at Trinity. Our morning services are continuing to study the Book of Daniel. Daniel was made the Babylonian ‘Prime Minister’ in his teenage years and served as principal court adviser to a number of kings. He wrote down not just his life history, but a number of remarkable revelations that have proven to be exceptionally accurate and continue to prove true to this day. These point us to both a more hopeful future and one which includes an even greater reason to care for this planet and all that lives and breathes on it, especially our fellow man. Men and women, boys and girls, alive today and yet unborn are impacted by the truths revealed here. Do you want to save the planet? Then listen to what Daniel has to say about why we should, it might surprise you. The first weekend of October is our Harvest Weekend. Saturday 5 at 7pm: We would love for you to join us for Hope from Harvest Harmonies as we explore in music and song the true and lasting hope that we find in the fact that year after year there is autumn and winter, then spring and summer, and a bountiful harvest for us to benefit from. Refreshments will include harvest cakes and puddings. Sunday 6 at 10.30am: Our morning service will encourage and enable us to help the homeless. We regularly share the bounty that God gives with those who have less by supporting Beacon House, a charity for the homeless in Colchester. Their latest list of urgent needs can be found at: www. beaconhouseministries.org.uk Sunday 6 at 5pm: At our monthly guest service we will consider the human impact on our home. This is where we discuss what we read in Scripture and consider together what difference it should make to our lives. Come and join us and stay afterwards for our Harvest Supper. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been to church for a while, or ever before. We will do everything we can to make you welcome; indeed the evening service is just for you. Our services last between 60 and 90 minutes and refreshments follow. For information on these and all our other activities call 01206 393745 or visit: www.trinity-manningtree.org.uk
