A WORD FROM THE EDITOR When I roll out of bed in the morning I immediately head to the kitchen, put the kettle on and switch on the TV news. I like to know what’s happening in the world before my day begins, but it’s often quite depressing and sometimes makes me quite grumpy. By the time I get into the car to drive to work I need an antidote, which I usually find in music. However, earlier this week I switched on just in time to catch a programme on Radio 4 called The Pleasures of Brecht, a celebration of the simple joys in life and the story of Brecht’s much-loved poem that described them. Brecht’s poem, Vergnügungen, is a list of pleasures, moving from “the first look out of the window in the morning” via showering, swimming, the dog and “comfortable shoes” to “being friendly”. As I listened I began to consider the simple pleasures in my own day to day existence and my mood soon lifted. Predictably that first cup of tea topped the list, closely followed by my son’s face when I catch him watching something funny on TV. I also include a perfectly boiled egg, a free checkout at the supermarket, the smell of dinner cooking when I get in from work (rarely happens), discovering someone has emptied the dishwasher (never happens but I’m hoping my husband reads this), a perfectly chilled glass of white wine at the end of a productive day, chatting with friends, finding £5 I didn’t know I had, dark chocolate, an unexpected smile from anyone, running into a friend I haven’t seen for a while, finding the perfect pair of jeans, meeting someone who inspires me, hitting a deadline, new socks, clean windows, feeling included, cake… I could go on and on, but every day since I’ve identified new pleasures (and been forced to accept that I am a chocoholic) which I would probably have ignored if this hadn’t been on my mind. And that’s the point. We rarely take the time to appreciate the simple things in life but when we do we are likely to find much to be thankful for. I’m still going to watch the news, I want to be socially and politically aware, but I’m determined to acknowledge and appreciate the simple pleasures because it makes me happier. I hope you can make a list and that it gives you lots to be thankful for, especially when the news gets you down. I wonder how many lists begin with a perfect cup of tea!

NEWS
MARTLESHAM VILLAGE FETE We hope you had a good day. Unfortunately I’m writing this before the event, so we all have our fingers crossed at the moment. Thanks though to everyone who entertained, ran a stall or offered their activities for our pleasure. We would really appreciate your feedback so we can plan to improve next year, so please go to www.surveymonkey.com/r/CB8V7LX and fill in our short survey. There are only three questions: What did you like? What could be improved? Would you like to help? Please comment on such things as the: • Suitability and range of stalls, attractions and catering • Anything missing you would like to see • Any suggested improvements • Anything you particularly enjoyed (or otherwise) • Anyone you particularly wish to mention All comments are welcome, and if there is anything we need to follow up please include your email address. Do consider joining us on the organising team for next year. The work isn’t onerous and can actually be fun. We are a happy little team, and it’s always interesting. No experience necessary…as you can probably tell!
MARTLESHAM SURGERY PPG Update on our Falls Prevention Project Both of our first two exercise programmes are now full, but we still have a few places left on the third programme starting early 2020. We held an information event about this at the Pavilion in May and hope to hold another in the autumn. If you received a personal invitation to the May event and couldn’t attend, but you would like to know more, please leave a note at reception saying you’d like to attend the next one. I am pleased to report that our recent campaign for increasing PPG membership has been very successful. We now have 10 members which enables us to tackle more projects for the benefit of patients. Watch this space for updates. At the time of writing, the practice is about to undergo a CQC inspection (similar to an Ofsted inspection for schools). The PPG will have an input into this on behalf of patients. There is a new patient survey in the waiting room if you would like to provide feedback. The results will be considered by the practice and the PPG. You can also feedback your experience of the practice via: www.mhdoctors.co.uk Please tell us what’s going well or make suggestions for anything that can be improved.

MARTLESHAM HEATH HOUSEHOLDERS LTD Grass Cutting We have had a lot of complaints that the grass areas have not been cut and it doesn’t look very good. We agree with these complaints and we have been in touch with the subcontractor almost on a daily basis. At the time of writing this article, the mowers have arrived and almost all of the grass areas have been cut. The village looks a lot better and more pleasing to look at and walk around. While we were complaining to the subcontract responsible for the grass cutting, we were informed that it was an abnormal high growth season. We do believe that more thought will be required to ensure that the situation does not occur again. At one of the recent meetings of the volunteers, various options were put forward and we will investigate these options when the time for the renewal of the new contract arises next year.
Can you volunteer some time to help us? The group relies on the goodwill of volunteers to help in the kitchen, with preparations and tidying away, as well as engaging clients in discussion and with various activities, such as indoor games, cognitive exercises and singing.
MHHL Facebook Account Please note that MHHL has a Facebook account and website – please use either of these to keep abreast of the ongoing work and various issues affecting the village. At the moment there is a notification about a meeting that was planned to be held at the Pavilion at 3am on July 26 about possible routes for a Northern Bypass.
If you would like to make a referral or want to volunteer, please contact Maureen Howes: maureenhowes@headwaysuffolk.org.uk 01473 712225

WOODBRIDGE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Woodbridge and District Lions Club has continued its busy schedule of fundraising events. The club held a hugely successful Pig Race Night at Hacheston Village Hall at the end of May with all funds raised in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice. The evening raised just over £800, but the club decided to round this up to £1,000 and club president Roy Benton presented the cheque to Louisa Smart from EACH at our July meeting. Woodbridge Regatta is our main summer fundraiser and we are pleased to report that a total of just over £1,100 was made at this year’s event, which will be used for the benefit of local charities and good causes. We would like to thank all the members of the public who supported us by sponsoring ducks for our Duck Dive event, both from our sales in Woodbridge Thoroughfare over the preceding two weeks and on the day. The lucky Duck Dive winning numbers were: first prize 928, second 1389, third 430. All prizes have been claimed and special thanks to the winners of the second prize who kindly decided to donate their winnings to charities.

OUT & ABOUT NEWS FROM DEBEN ROTARY KESGRAVE WI Our July meeting was held on a very warm evening. Our speaker was David Morton who spoke about the history of Buckingham Palace. Who could ever believe that there have been so many changes over past years? David gave us some very interesting facts about the present building such as the number of bedrooms, offices, reception rooms, staff employed and, the one that amused us most, 87 bathrooms! However, visitors to the palace on open days are not allowed to use any of them – they must wait until they are outside in the gardens for the portable ones! David’s interest in the palace stems from his father, who had been employed at the palace when he was a young child. Our monthly competition was a photograph of Woodbridge with Enid Castle taking first and Margaret Stockton coming in second. During the business section of the meeting members sadly noted the passing of Eileen Clarke, one of our older members who had regularly brought hand crafted items and plants to our trading table. Sheila Stokes gave a very informative report from her visit to the National WI AGM held in Bournemouth in early June. 2019 is proving to be a busy year for Kesgrave WI. On June 20 a team entered the WI Summer Quiz at Needham Market and June 21 was spent at The Hut on Felixstowe Prom with coffee, a fish & chip lunch, afternoon tea and paddling in glorious sunshine. Later that evening Kesgrave members joined Bucklesham & Brightwell, Nacton, Levington and Martlesham WIs at Bucklesham Village Hall for our annual group meeting. The speaker/entertainment for the evening was The Military Wives Choir from Wattisham. What an excellent evening – finished off with a delicious buffet supper. Tuesday 3 September sees another of Suffolk East WI’s Centenary celebrations – a Centenary Fair at Trinity Park from 11am-8pm. Entrance is free for WI members, but visitors are welcome to join us for the day at a small charge. There will be a variety of local artisan crafters and food producers, demonstrations, an evening performance by the WI Choir and a competitive craft and baking competition. On Saturday 28 September we are holding a hands-on craft day which is open to members and non-members. It’s £12 per person and runs from 10am to 4pm at the Scout Hall in Kesgrave. Light lunch and all materials included. More details from Lyn Parker: 01473 623296 Our next meeting is our garden meeting from 2-4pm in a member’s garden on Thursday 1 August. Visitors are very welcome to join us. If you require information please call our secretary, Di Chilver: 01473 611415
All change at the top at the Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben when, at our handover evening on Monday 1 July, Rotarian Chris Walker succeeded Rotarian Tom Griffin as president. We look forward to another enjoyable year of fellowship and community service. We have been out and about in the last few weeks at various events including Woodbridge Regatta, Melton Fete and Martlesham Village Day, where you may have seen our Rotary gazebo or had a go at our popular putting game. Our annual vocational award was presented to Anne Stevenson as a much deserved mark of appreciation for her long service with the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Anne was presented with the vocational service shield and a cheque. We were delighted when one of our members, Rotarian Peter Kidd, was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list. The award was in recognition of many years of community service with Rotary, and in particular Rochford House, mentoring and services to the village of Little Bealings. Our Memory Cafe, run in conjunction with Woodbridge Rotary and Woodbridge Inner Wheel, continues to flourish. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month from 10.30am to noon at Woodbridge Football Club. If you would like more details of this or any other aspects of Rotar, please contact Rotarian Martin Kenyon: 01394 386933
MARTLESHAM HARD OF HEARING GROUP An independent social group for people with any type of hearing loss. Partners and hearing dogs welcome. Our group meets from 10.30am to noon on the first Thursday of the month at Martlesham Pavilion. We charge £4 per session and frequently have a speaker. Last year we had everything from a local historian speaking to us about Prettys corset making in Ipswich to running a bed and breakfast in Colchester, as well as a lady who told us about her trip to Iceland (the country, not the shop!). We always have time to chat over coffee/tea and biscuits. We are very sociable and always welcome new people to the group. The pavilion has an excellent hearing loop and a lady voluntarily text types so even people with the most severe hearing loss don’t feel left out, something lots of people with hearing loss suffer. There is also free parking. Why not give us a try – we would love to see you? For more information please contact Steph Moon: 07741 310480 / steph.moon@hhas.org.uk

Join us on the last Wednesday every month (excluding July & August) for a three-course lunch followed by an interesting speaker and a prize raffle. On the second Wednesday we meet for coffee and a chat. In July and August, and at Christmas, our wives, partners and friends are invited to join us. They also accompany us to theatres, shows, musicals and trips to places of interest in East Anglia and beyond. Why not come and meet other gentlemen, all retired or semi-retired and from a wide range of careers, interests and backgrounds? Our objective is to provide fellowship for members and their families. Prospective new members are always welcome and there is no requirement to have belonged to any other organisation previously. OUT & ABOUT 1ST BRIGHTWELL GUIDES By the time you read this, some of our 16 Guides will have gained a First Aid and Camp Skills Builder badge as part of our new programme, been to the beach at Felixstowe, go-karted at Hallowtrees, geocached, litter picked, and spent our final night of the summer term orienteering in Rendlesham Forest. Twenty-one of our District Guides spent a busy Sunday in June abseiling, climbing, crate stacking, rifle shooting, grass sledging, outdoor cooking, fire lighting and more. Five of the Guides will be spending the last five days in July under canvas at ‘Guiditude’, a festival themed county camp with 320 other young members aged 10-18 from across Suffolk. They will have danced, sung, yoga’d, drummed and crafted, and no camp is complete without steamed sponge pudding! If you didn’t get the chance to meet us at the village fete and want to find out more about what Guiding can offer for your daughter(s), or for you as a volunteer, please do not hesitate to contact us. A fond farewell to those who are leaving us and a warm welcome to our new members joining in September. Lastly a big thank you to my assistants, Margaret, Pippa and Pam, I couldn’t do all of this without you.
1 MARTLESHAM HEATH RANGERS ST
The Rangers have had a busy term, tidying the planters outside the hut, making wild seed bombs, building a trebuchet, cooking on campfires, creating a tote bag out of a t-shirt, producing land art and will finish the term having a party with food and homemade mocktails. If your daughter is aged 14-18 and would like to join a small group of enthusiastic young women to enjoy fun challenges in a safe and friendly environment, why not contact us? On a wider scale we offer the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications, such as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Girlguiding’s own international travel schemes. We say goodbye to Ellie this term and wish you good luck for the future. Happy Holidays Guides and Rangers! See you in September Jo (jo.d@btinternet.com)

WHERE ON EARTH ARE YOU? Suffolk Libraries are asking this question for their space-themed Summer Reading Challenge, which started on July 20. The campaign, using the hashtag #SLWhereOnEarth, encourages social media users to post selfies of themselves reading books over the summer, no matter where they are in the world. Leon Paternoster, Head of Digital & Marketing for Suffolk Libraries, said: “You can read anything, anywhere for the Summer Reading Challenge, including eBooks and eAudio, no matter where you are in Suffolk, or the world! For parents and carers, #SLWhereOnEarth gives children something fun to do over the long break, while keeping up their reading levels. They can also pick up or download a book themselves from the library or our website.” This social media campaign is inspired by Suffolk Libraries’ annual Summer Reading Challenge, in which the theme this year is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. EARLY YEARS AT HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL Outdoor Learning in the Early Years What a fantastic year it’s been for our Early Years! Lot of people, including our wonderful Parents and Friends Association, have been working really hard to further improve the outdoor area for our Early Years children. With a large space to work with and some great resources already in place, including sandpits, mud kitchens, a willow tunnel and a range of outdoor apparatus, the children already had a fabulous space to play and learn in. However, as part of a whole-school drive to continue to improve the outdoor learning provision, we have been able to find funding to invest in further equipment for the Early Years outdoor area. Our children have enjoyed being able to ride around our brand-new race circuit on our new trikes and bikes. They have further developed their social play with our new large wooden vehicle-themed wooded role-play equipment, which includes a car, caravan and boat. The lovely summer weather that we have enjoyed recently has also provided the children with the opportunity to explore and interact with our new cascading water trough. What to do with single use plastic? The club youngsters found the answer – fashioning rafts out of plastic bottles and bags. They then tried to race them on the yacht pond with mixed success. The winning raft, built by Ralph Fortmann, was a beautifully balanced craft made out of two plastic bottles for the hull, a plastic bag as a sail and a plastic keel. Something to do with the kids this summer, but make sure you take your plastic home with you! The raft race was just one activity at the Junior Regatta held on Sunday 7 July. There was also a Race Round the Island in dinghies which was won by Freddie Simpson. Thanks to Sam Fortmann, Steve Finch and Jo Marsters for organising the event. The flotilla has continued to prove popular with a near perfect sail down to the Maybush at Waldringfield at the beginning of July. This is a great opportunity for members who have done our sailing courses to practice their skills in a relaxed and fun way.
Congratulations to our grand finalist of the BBC 500 Words Competition, Eddie Firman! Eddie and his family attended celebrations at Windsor Castle last month and met a number of celebrities, including HRH Duchess of Cornwall. Well done on your success!
The summer is a great time to get out on the water and the Club Regatta takes place from August 2-6. We hope there will be a good number of entries. It is an open event so sailors from other clubs can join in. The club continues to prove popular with lots of new members and the launch of a successful On Board courses for youngsters.
We hope you are all enjoying the summer holidays and we look forward to seeing all our returning, and new, families on Wednesday 4 September.
