A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’ve just been informed that Auntie Sarah will be visiting Suffolk on December 3 and as it’s the perfect opportunity to get Christmas presents to that side of the family (all 11 of them) I’m now on a deadline! Thank goodness there are many, many Christmas markets and festivals coming up. They are a particularly useful place to find locally produced gifts for out-of-towners. I’m definitely focused on finding handmade gifts this year, possibly inspired by the beautiful Christmas Tree decoration I received from a close friend last year. It was one of my favourite presents and I’m secretly hoping she gives me another this year. I have been dropping heavy hints since June or thereabouts so I’m quite hopeful.

There are many good reasons to shop local at Christmas, not least the fact that your spending will boost the local economy, save or indeed generate jobs, support local entrepreneurs and create a more vibrant and engaged community. There’s also the social aspect, the fact that you are more likely to find quirky, one-off items, maybe even try before you buy and get a better deal or some advice.

According to a new study, UK shoppers are predicted to spend £73 billion this Christmas, with online sales accelerating to unprecedented levels.

Apparently convenience, price comparison and avoiding crowds and queues are three of the main reasons why online shopping is so popular, but don’t assume than ‘online’ and ‘local’ are entirely contradictory. Most of our local retailers sell online so you can take advantage of the benefits of online shopping and support local business at the same time.

For me, Christmas means cleaning the house from top to bottom (sad I know, but deeply embedded) and down ‘n’ dirty old style shopping with the crowds, the queues, the Christmas music, carol singers, hot chocolate, mince pies and a glass or two of mulled wine to soothe aching muscles. I can’t wait.

NEWS MARTLESHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN CONSULTATION IN FULL SWING Your views are vital to the success of the plan which will relate to new planning policies for most of Martlesham. It has been prepared by a working party of local volunteers and parish councillors The period of consultation started in mid-November and ends at the end of January, a longer period than legally required because of Christmas.

At the start of the period the draft plan became available electronically from the website (http://martleshamnp.onesuffolk.net/) and every household and business in Martlesham will receive a brochure with the key points summarised. Please consider what is proposed and let the team know your views, either electronically or in paper form. Written comments can be left at McColls, Black Tiles Post Office, Falcon Park reception or the parish offices.

Throughout the period the team will be undertaking further activities to enable every voice to be heard. Public displays and drop-in sessions already arranged, to which you are invited, are: Tuesday, December 6 Martlesham Primary Academy (Beacon Hill), 4-7pm Monday, December 12 Parish Room (Community Centre, Felixstowe Road), 4-7pm Thursday, December 15 Church Centre (Martlesham Heath), 4.30-7.30pm Monday, January 30 Parish Room (Community Centre, Felixstowe Road), 4-7pm We will also be pleased to be invited to any club, society or other group in Martlesham to present our plans and listen to your views.

ST ELIZABETH HOSPICE USED STAMPS APPEAL I’ve been collecting used stamps for the hospice in Foxhall Road for nearly 25 years, and I’m so grateful that you all help me to help this wonderful charity. At this time of year we all probably get more envelopes with stamps on than the rest of the year put together. A great time then to tear off those stamps and save them for the hospice to help them to raise funds.

An envelope full of stamps was put through my door earlier in the year with the following note written on it: “My husband and I took enormous comfort from the loving care we received from the wonderful people at the hospice during his long illness…” I feel this message sums up just how much the hospice means.

So please keep on collecting those stamps, pop them through my letterbox and I’ll pass them onto the hospice. Or drop them off at the library in Grange Farm.

FREE FLUTE RECITAL RAISES FUNDS FOR CHARITY Local flautist Romy Hills recently gave a free charity flute recital at St Mary’s Church in Woodbridge. The varied programme from Tchaikovsky and Debussy to Latin-American inspired contemporary music was well received by the large audience and showcased the flute in different styles of music.

Romy did not charge for her services and entry was free, but the retiring collection raised funds for the church.

Romy has played with various amateur ensembles, bands and orchestras and has performed at large venues both in this country and the USA. NEWS DISTRICT COUNCILLOR JOHN KELSO’S REPORT Martlesham Neighbourhood Plan After many, many months of hard work by local volunteers and a professional planning consultant, the Martlesham Neighbourhood Plan draft document is available to view online at: http://martleshamnp.onesuffolk.net If you require a hard copy please contact me. This excellent and wellproduced document is now at the consultation stage where the team are asking residents for their comments on this very important future planning document. When adopted it will be used by the parish council, district council and government planning inspectors to make decisions on proposed developments and planning applications that will affect our community.

The consultation exercise began on November 14 and will finish on January 31, 2017. Please spend some time looking at the document and email your comments, good or bad, to martlesham2028@gmx.co.uk or place them in the local collection points. I am sure that the volunteers will take your comments on board and make the necessary amendments to the document if it is legally possible and in the best interests of our community as a whole.

Drop-ins and exhibitions have been organised at local venues (see page 3). Please check out the information that has or is to be hand delivered to your address.

Suffolk Coastal and Waveney Council merger At the time of writing this report both councils are in the process of consulting residents to find out their views on this important proposal.

NEWS MARTLESHAM PARISH COUNCIL The council wishes all parishioners a Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Thanks to our volunteers At this festive time of year we would like to express our grateful thanks to the volunteers who assist our work in a variety of ways and in so doing help to keep our parish a great place to live. You might see volunteers looking after the woodlands, inspecting our play areas regularly, looking after the noticeboards, litter picking or helping with conservation work.

We also have a dedicated group or non-councillors working on the Martlesham Neighbourhood Plan.

Work Party at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, October 22 Many thanks to the 10 people who took part. The work accomplished included: • Raking and clearing of the sedge bed • Clearing of nettles behind the play area • Coppicing and pruning the elder and bushes behind the nettles.

The event took place with assistance from the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team, the countryside staff at Suffolk Coastal Norse who cut the sedge bed and the bowls club who kindly opened their club house for refreshments and provided access to toilets.

Development of the land to the south and east of Adastral Park CEG has now bought this land for a development of approximately 2,000 new homes. This development is part of Suffolk Coastal District Council’s (SCDC) approved Local Plan for our area. CEG hopes to submit an outline planning application to SCDC in summer 2017 and will be putting together a master plan for the site. Before that they plan to carry out a lot of consultation with the local community to find out what facilities we need, how we would like the development to look and any concerns we have. Please look out for dates (see page 8) and participate in their engagement sessions so that we have some influence on the final design, even though many people, including the parish council, objected to this major development in our parish.

Woodbridge (with part of Martlesham) Neighbourhood Plan Further to our report in November, we understand that the current situation is: Woodbridge Town Council has announced that no further work will

take place on the Woodbridge (with part of Martlesham) Neighbourhood Plan. We understand that planning matters will now revert to SCDC who will take the matter forward as part of their Local Plan Review and the opportunities to comment through that process. Martlesham Parish Council remains a statutory consultee for the whole of Martlesham parish.

Woodbridge Town Council has made a statement about the matter which you can view at: www.woodbridge-suffolk.gov.uk/news/neighbourhoodplan-statement Noticeboards There are 12 noticeboards sited around the parish, provided by the council to inform you of its own meetings and events and to allow local Martlesham not-for-profit clubs and organisations to advertise their events. These are not intended for business use. We purposefully decided not to have closed units in order to make them a community facility. We’d be very grateful if notices could be removed promptly when they are out of date and please never use staples, which damage the boards and are difficult to remove. If you have doubts about whether you should be posting a notice, please contact the clerk for permission.

OUT & ABOUT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOSPICE’S NEW RETAIL CENTRE

St Elizabeth Hospice is opening a brand new retail centre in Martlesham and is looking to recruit a team of volunteers to help when it opens.

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Making music fun in East Anglia

The hospice opened its first retail centre in Holywells Road 18 months ago and it has proved so successful, the local charity has decided to open another one in Martlesham. The retail centre is expected to be very popular and will require a number of volunteers to help in a variety of roles.

December is the busiest month of the year for Martlesham Brass. You will often find us playing Christmas carols outside supermarkets in Martlesham and Ipswich, raising money for the charities nominated by our band members. This year we are raising funds for Cruse Bereavement Care Suffolk, Over the Rainbow Children’s Charity and Tools with a Mission.

Patrick Otter, St Elizabeth Hospice’s retail area manager, said: “Following the opening of our hugely popular retail centre in town last year we have been eager to open another one in a community area for a while, and Martlesham is an ideal location for our second retail centre.

Don’t forget to join us for Coffee and Carols at 10am on Saturday, December 3 at St Michael’s Church Centre, Martlesham Heath, when you can hear our intermediate band. There will be refreshments and a Christmas hamper raffle. Admission is free.

“All our shops get very busy and we expect this new retail centre to have a constant flow of customers, so we need a number of capable volunteers to assist in the store.

Our Christmas Concert is on Saturday, December 17 at 7pm, also at St Michael’s Church Centre. This concert is often a sell-out, so do get your tickets early.

Volunteer roles will include serving customers, using the till, merchandising and stock preparation for new and donated goods, driving a van, creating appealing displays and administration.

The store will open in early 2017 and will sell a range of good quality second-hand items including furniture, clothes, accessories, homeware, DVDs, vinyl, books and more.

This December, they will be hosting a number of carol concerts across the region, as well as collecting messages and memories to place on special ‘Trees to Remember’ at their funeral branches, raising money for local hospices.

OUT & ABOUT NEW YEAR FESTIVAL + HOOTENANNY Following the huge success of the recent Saints Beer Festival and Oktoberfest events, Beer & Co is hosting the first Ipswich Winter Beer & Wine Festival in the run-up to the New Year at St Peters by the Waterfront.

Beer & Co owners Marc Titford & Greg It has been a whirlwind start for company owners Cooper at Saints Beer Festival in August Greg Cooper and Marc Titford and they have plenty more lined-up for the future to interest beer and live music fans. THE ORWELL SINGERS CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Orwell Singers will be holding their annual Christmas Concert at St Michael and All Angel’s Church, Martlesham Heath on Saturday, December 3 at 7.30pm.

The choir will be singing music by Benjamin Britten and John Rutter in a first half to reflect the Christmas story, and in the second half they will take a musical journey with carols from around the world.

These will be interspersed with traditional carols and familiar popular classics for the audience to join in and readings by guest narrator Geoff Rogers.

Admission at the door will be £8 for adults and 50p for accompanied children and will include a glass of sherry or orange juice and mince pies in the interval.

The choir is currently looking for new members. We are a well-established ladies choir based in Ipswich. We enjoy performing a wide variety of music ranging from easy listening to classical and from folk songs to songs from the shows. We sing in unison, two, three or four parts, accompanied and unaccompanied. No audition is necessary. An ability to read music is helpful but not essential.

Our meeting on Friday, November 4 featured an illustrated talk by one of our own members. David Empson demonstrated his enthusiastic and comprehensive knowledge in a talk entitled What Did Your Relative Do In The Great War?.

In addition to a number of large storyboards depicting war heroes from Ipswich, David had brought along a large collection of medals dating back to the Crimea. These included a set of the iconic Pip, Squeak and Wilfred medals. These campaign medals were issued to men of the British Expeditionary Force who fought in that most horrific war. The first of these medals is the 1914-15 Star and was given to members of the Old Contemptibles who fought in France in 1914. When they were issued in the 1920s they were so called after a popular comic strip in the Daily Mirror.

Members of the audience brought along various medals from their own families. A visitor from Stowmarket brought an Anzac commemorative medallion, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices from Australia and all the countries of the then British Empire which came to the assistance of the ‘mother country’.

David’s command of his subject made for a most interesting evening and a vote of thanks was given by our chairman, Martyn Cook. John ‘Smudge’ Smith will deliver an illustrated talk entitled The History of Duxford on Friday, December 2 at the Community Hall on Felixstowe Road. Meetings start at 7.30pm with a tea/coffee break. Non-members are welcome for a payment of just £4 at the door.

We have just one more meeting in 2015 – our Christmas Party on December 10. There will be a bring and share supper and musical entertainment with carol singing to get us all in the festive mood.

At our last meeting Simon and his guide dog Lennox were presented with a cheque for £700.50 which we have raised during the year. It will be used to buy special life-jackets for disabled members of the East Anglian Sailing Trust.

Looking forward to 2017, our first meeting is on January 7 when Sarah Waldock will show us how to make cards from scrap.

DEVELOP YOUR PUBLIC SPEAKING AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN THE NEW YEAR Your friendly neighbourhood speakers’ club, Speak Easy At Martlesham, is part of the global Toastmasters International (TI) club network.

It’s the run-up to Christmas and developing public speaking skills is probably not highest on your ‘to do’ list. If you do want to visit one of our meetings before Christmas you’ll still be very welcome though. We have two meetings in December, the first a normal meeting on Thursday, December 1 and the second, our fun quiz-based Christmas meeting on Thursday, December 18. We’ll be back in the New Year on Thursday, January 12 with an open evening meeting. If you’ve been thinking about finding out about us for a while, the open evening is an ideal opportunity.

Toastmasters has spent more than 90 years devising and refining the best ways for people to develop their public speaking. There’s a bonus that comes with improving your public speaking – it boosts your confidence and puts you on the track to becoming a better leader. Toastmasters recognises this. There are leadership projects and opportunities, as well as speaking projects, within it’s educational tracks. The tracks are all supported by books and other materials that guide and challenge you.

Speak Easy meets every Thursday fortnight at the Richards Room in Martlesham (alongside Felixstowe Road, behind the Tesco superstore), though not on Thursday, December 29. Our meetings are structured to include impromptu speaking, formal speaking and evaluation. Evaluation is a vital part of how Toastmasters’ clubs operate. When you evaluate someone else you not only help them, you also – through empathy and understanding – help your own speaking. By the way – it’s up to you how far and how fast you progress.

KESGRAVE WI Along with our table top show, our annual meeting was held as part of our November meeting. Wendy Jary, our advisor, joined us to assist with the business side of the meeting and reports of our activities during the past year were read and approved. All of the previous committee were re-elected with the addition of one new member, Lyn Parker. Monica Collins was elected to remain as president for 2017.

The overall winner of our monthly competitions for the past year was Sue Hilling with Monica Collins in second place and Shirley Kendall third.

Our bi-annual table top show was a great success with nearly 100 entries this year. This competition gives members the opportunity to show their skills at cooking and preserves, sewing and crafts, photography, flower arranging and vegetable growing.

Responsibility for the organising of our show was taken by Enid Castle and Lyn Parker. Certificates were awarded to the winners of each of the 24 sections.

Our next meeting at 7.15pm on Thursday, December 1 in Kesgrave Community Centre is our Christmas meeting. We will be entertained by a small group from the Kesgrave Singers who will lead us in a Christmas sing-a-long, after which we will enjoy a bring and share Christmas buffet. OUT & ABOUT THE LIONS CLUB OF WOODBRIDGE & DISTRICT With Christmas now firmly in our sights, we focus much of our efforts on the Christmas Parcels project and the fundraising necessary to support it. Each year we distribute up to 200 parcels of seasonal groceries to families, couples and those living alone for whom Christmas might otherwise be just another day. The heartfelt letters and cards we receive demonstrate how gratefully these parcels can be received, while the growing demand on Foodbanks for day-to-day provisions speaks for the continued value of the project.

The Christmas parcels represent a significant call on our resources, so we will be raising funds via street and store collections and once again travelling around Woodbridge with Father Christmas as he makes his preliminary rounds in mid-December. Find us at Tesco Martlesham Heath on Monday, December 5 and Wednesday 7, and in Woodbridge town centre on Saturday, December 17.

The sleigh ride will see us with Father Christmas on the early evenings of Wednesday, December 14 around Barton Road, Collingwood Road, Beresford Drive, Bury Hill and Bury Hill Close; then on Thursday 15 in Peterhouse Crescent, Pembroke Avenue, Queens Avenue, Church Close and Clare Avenue.

We take an evening break from the fundraising and preparations with our Christmas meal, an opportunity to relax with our colleagues and our partners, enjoying a traditional meal, a few stories and some dreadful carol singing before the final hectic few days.

IPSWICH PHILATELIC SOCIETY Gerald King presented a talk entitled Alternative Lundy on November 2. He started the evening with a statement: “You must believe everything that I tell you this evening”. He then revealed the display of Lundy stamps based on Lundy being the centre of world trade, the Commonwealth, and the first country to issue stamps. All the iconic issues of Britain and Commonwealth were displayed along with mail sent to Dad’s Army characters, all issued and posted in Lundy. A great fun evening enjoyed by all.

1ST MARTLESHAM SCOUTS At the end of half-term week, 40 people boarded a coach to Duxford.

The outing was made possible thanks to John Kelso’s community budget, a generous donation from Marks and Mann and scout funds. All their contributions to the coach hire costs are much appreciated. Beavers and Cubs are working towards their aviation badge so Duxford Air Museum proved to be a popular choice for an interesting and enjoyable day out.

ORWELL DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY On Wednesday, November 2, Jo Walton presented a great talk with wonderful illustrations on the origins and uses of camouflage. Beginning with khaki, it developed into a sophisticated science. Designers, artists and scientists pooled their talents to help the war effort. It enabled ships, airfields, factories and soldiers to be hidden from enemy eyes.

On December 7, we host Ian Keable with a lecture entitled The Corked Conjurer: Comedy and Credulity in Georgian England. Ian is a lecturer and has been a professional magician.

Why not come along and enjoy some good company and an interesting talk? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months and we also organise interesting day visits. The wonderfully illustrated lectures are presented by national and international lecturers and start at 2.15pm (2pm arrival is advised). WOOLLY WONDERS HAVE BEEN BUSY Late in October we were especially pleased to be able to present 2,297 knitted hats for Innocent Smoothie bottles to Suffolk AgeUk. They will receive 25p for every bottle of smoothie sold. Last year this project boosted their funds by more than £2,000. One of our group, Gill, knitted 2,000 of the hats just by herself. Congratulations to her.

Last month we joined St Michael’s Church at their pre-Christmas coffee morning with lots of tree decorations and toys for Christmas for sale. One of our group has a daughter who is going to Zambia with Kesgrave High School next summer. We were able to give our share of the proceeds to her for this work.

We are looking forward to getting together for a Christmas lunch later this month.

We will be getting together to knit on December 8 and 22 at The Runway Café next to St Michael’s Church, 10am-noon. You are very welcome to join us whatever your skill level.

WOODBRIDGE INNER WHEEL After the business section of the meeting on Thursday, November 3, district chairman Jenny Childerhouse gave us a brief talk. One of her hobbies is investigating her family tree. She has been able to trace her family back to 1540 when her ancestors lived in Soham so she is very much a local lady.

Jenny has been in Inner Wheel for 26 years. During her year as district chairman she is being well supported by her club. She went on to promote the conferences for both 2017 and 2018 and urged us to consider joining the district choir for the 2018 conference when Liz Thomas will be the association president.

Jenny was presented with a recipe book and some milled flour from our Tide Mill. In return she presented the club with a paramedic bear representing the East Anglia Air Ambulance, her charity for the year.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WOODBRIDGE The inaugural lunchtime meeting of the Rotary Club of Woodbridge was held on July 5, 1946.

Twenty members were present and the first club president and founder member, Robin Finch, was the governor of Hollesley Bay Prison. The effective date of the club charter Derek Rothwell presenting the 70-year was October 3, 1946. In certificate to Bertie Hirst December 1952, the club first presented a Christmas Tree to the town of Woodbridge and have done every year since, together with a Carol Service held on Market Hill, an event which attracts more than 1,000 people.

Since 2000, the Rotary Club of Woodbridge has raised in excess of £250,000 for various charities both locally and overseas. The club supports the local community in various ways, including the provision of drivers and transport for MENCAP’s Gateway Club, and together with members of the Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben and the Inner Wheel Club of Woodbridge, organise and support a Memory Café for people with dementia.

On Friday, October 14, Peter and Sue from local charity The Banyan Tree presented an update on the project we helped raise money for in 2015.

Woodbridge House is going from strength-tostrength providing a local community hall and a place for youngsters in the village to receive additional learning. The club presented the charity with a cheque for £500.

Members were taken back to their school days on Friday, October 21 when Rotarian Simon Holloway introduced us to the world of Hornby OO Trains. When asked how many members had model train sets in their youth, 80 per cent admitted that they had. Train sets and track layouts had been a major hobby for Simon for over 50 years.

On Friday, November 4, members were entertained by The Rev Major Stuart Turner from Padre Rock Barracks who gave us an insight into his life, from school in Woolwich to the present day. How he had been in the Metropolitan Police and the CID before joining the church and becoming a Padre with the British Army serving abroad, his last three years in Germany before his currant posting to Rock Barracks.

BRIGHTWELL UKULELES We are an independent group of musicians working together to improve our ukulele playing using Brightwell Church Hall as a rehearsal venue.

Normally we meet on the first and third Tuesday afternoons of the month from 2.30 to about 4.15pm. We pause for a refreshment break during the session.

Players are asked to contribute £2 per session to cover hall hire, refreshments and all printed session material. We welcome absolute beginners to join us. We are currently working on our first performance which is planned for early December.

OUT & ABOUT BLOOMING NEWS FROM DEBEN ROTARY

Members and friends of Deben Rotary have planted 5,000 purple crocus bulbs around Woodbridge, Kesgrave, Martlesham and Melton this autumn to support the eradication of polio worldwide. This is a Rotary initiative and more information can be found at: www.rotarycrocus.com The sites are at: Birchwood School, Martlesham Heath; Kyson School, Woodbridge; Cedarwood and Heath Schools, Kesgrave; Seckford Golf Club; St Michael’s Church, Martlesham Heath; in Waldringfield and Melton.

Our annual charity quiz, held this year at St Michael’s Church Centre, was again a great success. Fifteen teams took part and £951 was raised. This enabled the winning team, Farlingaye High School, to donate £316 to their chosen charity, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH AND DISTRICT SOROPTIMIST CLUB A world in which women achieve their potential – that’s what we are working for. Sometimes it feels like a pipe dream, but then it’s encouraging to remember the huge number of groups also committed to achieving it. Recently we have tapped into the workings of our political system and linked up with other voluntary organisations.

The strange boundary lines drawn around Ipswich mean we have members living in several constituencies. We have recently written to their MPs about FGM, raising issues about funding for treatment for cases discovered locally and about the extent to which FGM figures in governmental discussions on human rights and grants to countries where this abuse is part of the culture.

A group of us were privileged to meet with one of our MPs , Jo Churchill, to hear about the work of women from all parties in parliament to advance equality. We particularly asked about her impressions of the Council on the Status of Women which she attended in New York earlier this year, as did several Soroptimists from around the world. As an accredited NGO we have the right to be involved.

We are currently working on two projects which involve partnership with other organisations. With Coastal Action against Abuse we are preparing a Facebook campaign to support White Ribbon Day at the end of November. With the university and LighthouseWA we are planning an ambitious event in February. In addition we have accepted an invitation from Museum Street Methodist Church to have a stall in aid of Women’s Aid at their bazaar.

Partnerships aren’t always easy, but it makes sense to pool talents and resources – and it’s fun.

MARTLESHAM IN BLOOM Display of gardens Thank you to everybody who submitted photographs of their gardens, which were shown at our Display of Gardens event on November 3 in The Parish Room. They provided an attractive and interesting display of gardens and other colourful areas of Martlesham. While there members of Martlesham in Bloom took the opportunity to carry out pruning and maintenance work to the border alongside the Richards Room and Parish Room which we planted up many years ago. This is one of the activities we carry out several times during the year to help keep the area attractive.

Bulb planting This autumn we have been planting more spring flowering bulbs in the parish to add to the colourful displays around Martlesham in the spring.

Bulbs we planted around some of the trees on Eagle Way opposite Parkers Place, included purple crocuses donated by Woodbridge Deben Rotary Club to commemorate the polio immunisation work they do in Africa and Asia. As children are vaccinated their little finger is marked in purple. Purple has, therefore, become the ‘colour of polio eradication’ and this year Rotary clubs throughout the UK are being encouraged to plant purple crocus corms or to donate them to be planted by other groups as a real and visible reminder of what Rotary has done to help less fortunate countries to become free from this terrible disease.

Thank you also to a local resident who very kindly brought us some tea to warm us while we were planting as it was a very cold afternoon.

Recreation Ground – Kronji’s Piece As part of our work to improve the environment and biodiversity of the parish, members of Martlesham in Bloom took part in the parish council’s work party in October at the Recreation Ground and Kronji’s Piece.

CODING FOR CODGERS

October’s Nature Watch Club meeting revolved around the subject of fungi. It included a ‘foray’ through the woods to identify species that had been learnt about. A great variety of shapes and sizes, colours and species were spotted, much to the interest of all involved. These included dead man’s fingers, common earth ball, several instances of bracket fungi and the oddly named turkey tail. Hopefully all of you who came along enjoyed yourselves.

In this case, Codgers do not need to be either male or ancient – Coding for Codgers is open to everyone.

Your children and/or grandchildren are learning ‘Coding’ at school, i.e. how to write computer programs. This group in Martlesham Heath is for people who would like to try it themselves. No experience necessary; this is not going to be a serious training course, it’s just for fun.

Five of us met for the first time on Friday, October 28 at The Runway Cafe at Martlesham Heath. Everyone had a good time, with coffee and cake.

At the next meeting we expect to produce a web page, drink coffee and program a computer to flash a light.

I’ll probably need more for Codgers to play with. A laptop with any sort of Windows and a USB socket will do. Anything you care to donate will be thoroughly cleansed of any personal data before use.

Recently two instances of concern have come to the attention of the group. Firstly, we would like to thank the quick-thinking walker who prevented someone from starting a fire in the woods, and remind everyone of the amazing space that the woods is and what it means to so many people. Causing damage to it only causes misery and deprives the community of somewhere that should be a place to relax and unwind.

In the same vein, people have been spotted metal detecting in the woods which, besides being illegal, is destroying the protected status of the woods. We realise that not everyone knows this but it is very much appreciated if you can protect the woods in any way.

SCHOOLS MARTLESHAM & KESGRAVE PLAYSCHOOLS We would like to thank all the parents who attended our AGM. We now have a new committee and thank the previous members for the work they completed over the last three years. Without the support of parents taking on a role in the committee our fantastic playschools could not continue. Thank you.

Over the last few weeks the children have taken part in a variety of activities. We welcomed a lady who allowed the children to dress up in a range of traditional Indian clothing as well as taking part in some Bollywood dancing. I’m not sure who enjoyed it more, the staff or the children. Maybe it’s an idea for the adults as a fundraising night!

We have also spent time exploring the natural world around us and how autumn is bringing change to the trees and woodland. The children loved climbing trees as well as learning about the constituent parts and what we call them.

Our Kesgrave team have had their Ofsted Inspection and we are very pleased to say they received an overall ‘Good’. This ties in very nicely with them celebrating their second birthday on November 17. HEDGEHOG NURSERY AT GORSELAND SCHOOL Throughout November we have been learning about autumn and hibernation. We began by going on an autumn walk around the school grounds, where the children found lots of colourful leaves and conkers which we took back to the nursery. We made an autumn tray and used leaves to produce rubbings, pictures, paintings and collages. We also found out about animals that hibernate and focused in particular on hedgehogs. The children left a dish of cat food and water in the nursery garden for a few days and hoped that a passing, hungry hedgehog was grateful. We made hedgehog bread, read hedgehog stories, found out hedgehog facts and much more.

We then learnt about fireworks and how to stay safe. We created sparkly pictures using splattered cotton wool balls and made pictures using marbles.

Recently, we have been very busy learning our Christmas songs for our first nativity. We would like to thank Harriet’s mum, Emily, for her amazing skills in costume making.

Everyone at Hedgehog Nursery would like to wish all of our families and friends a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2017.

Facilities for hire at Gorseland School Gorseland School is lucky to have some excellent facilities in the form of a multi-use games area (MUGA), a large Astroturf pitch, a playground and a large indoor hall. These facilities are available for the benefit of the general public on weekday evenings and throughout school holidays for a very competitive fee. The facilities are currently used for after school clubs, sporting groups, Scout and Guiding groups, fitness classes and other one off events. Weekly, monthly or ad hoc bookings are all welcomed. CALLING ALL MUMS… In November, Katie Fitzmaurice gave us a super taste of Jo Jingles classes which she runs in this area for babies and toddlers. It was a lovely session which was enjoyed by all. Now we look forward to our Bring and Share Christmas Party at St Michael’s Church Centre between 12.45 and 2.30pm on Tuesday, December 6. All mums, grans and carers with small children are invited to join us for festive activities, music and craft. We plan to have a nativity theme this year so the little ones may like to dress as a nativity character or something Christmassy, bring a baby doll, cuddly sheep or animal and join in the story. Just bring a small quantity of food to share and come along – you will be most welcome.

The Drinks and Dribbles Baby Cafe will be open between 10am and noon at St Michael’s Church Centre on Thursdays, December 1 and 15 for refreshments, chat and play. Mums, grans and carers with pre-schoolers can drop in or stay awhile.

THE SAPLINGS Christmas is coming and our pre-schoolers will be decorating the nursery, singing Christmas songs, dressing up in the Christmas Nativity and having fun and games at our Christmas party. After-school clubbers will be busy creating Christmas cards and decorations for us to use and to take home.

Our Cracking Christmas Fair is on Saturday, November 26, 2.30-4.30pm.

SPORT/CHURCH NEWS KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE NEWS It’s been an incredibly busy time in the run up to the end of the year for the teams at Northgate Karate and I can only apologise if there any competitors I miss in the write up.

Well done to everyone who competed at the EKKA Championship at Northgate Sports Centre on Sunday, October 16. A great standard was shown in both kumite and kata. The fighters were sharp with the Japanese kata looking better at each competition. Well done to those who have only been working on this discipline for a short period of time.

Congratulations to the following: Thomas Humphries for a bronze medal in Korean kata; Emma Buckley and Lilly Melton for silver medals in team kata; Chloe Campbell and Lola Blowfield for bronze medals in Japanese team kata; and Chloe who took silver in individual Japanese kata. Once again there was great support from family and friends. Many thanks to Gerry Turner for both your support at the event and the report.

At the ELITE Karate Open Championship in Walthamstow on Sunday, October 23, there was a gold medal for Ruby Hunt in kumite and joint bronze for all the Japanese team kata girls: Amelia Clow and Sophie Swann; Lilly Melton and Emma Buckley. Lilly also won a bronze medal in the individual Japanese kata.

Sunday, November 6 was a fantastic day at the I.K.G.A. Invitational Kata Competition in Southend. There were some brilliant results and a fabulous supportive team spirit. Well done everyone who competed.

In the individual kata, Lauren Berry won a gold, Daisy Hopwood silver and Oliver Currie and Jess Etherington took bronze medals. In the pairs kata, Chloe Campbell and Daisy Hopwood won gold, with silvers for Emma Buckley and Lilly Melton and also Amelia Clow and Sophie Swann, and finally there were bronzes for Joe Tully and Oliver Currie. Particular congratulations must go to the three Red Dragons – Lauren, Joe and Oliver – who are all only six years old. It was the first competition they had ever entered and they all came away with medals.

And finally there were some great results for our older teenage club members. Oscar Hunt came away from the Polish International Open with a bronze medal and there was a gold medal for Georgie Lawson.

Meanwhile, Taylor Evans has been racking up her medal haul at an impressive rate with gold medals at both the EKF English Nationals and the British International and a silver medal at the British Four Nations.

WOODBRIDGE BOWLS CLUB ‘That was the year that was, it’s over, let it go.’

Of course we can’t let the year go without reflecting on what went on behind the green door and beyond. For Woodbridge Bowls Club it was predominantly a ladies year, a year when the ladies played their way to the finals of several trophies and even won a few. Kathy James, Maggie Page and Trish Webber won the county triples final and went on to represent Suffolk at the national finals in Skegness. Viv Sheppard and Jen Daly made it through to the county finals, but the deficit of one single shot denied them the chance to also represent the county at national level. However, Viv, this time partnered with Kathy James, won the Otley Golden Jubilee Pairs, so well done ladies.

Our Christmas quiz this year also had a change of host as Mike Rogers stepped into the shoes of Tommy Tucker and provided the questions.

As to who will provide the answers remains, at the time of writing, a mystery.

I’m happy to announce that Mr Graham Timson has taken on the responsibilities of secretary. Graham has a hard act to follow, but I’m sure he will fit in well and I know all members will give him their support.

BRIGHTWELL CHURCH Our two events in October went very well with the quiz on October 15 and the autumn coffee morning and sale on October 29. Both were well supported and the coffee morning was a particularly grand social affair.

Through these activities we were able add almost £500 toward meeting the costs of running the church.

A generous donation given to us last year has enabled us to purchase 12 more chairs for the hall and also to replace the weathered front door.

Services at the church continue to be supported by our congregation and you are assured of a warm welcome.

Our annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols is planned for Sunday, December 18 at 6.30pm.
