A WORD FROM THE EDITOR There’s an elderly gent I see almost every day walking very, very slowly from the local supermarket carrying the same small plastic bag. I say ‘gent’ because he’s always ‘properly’ dressed in a suit and tie. I like to think he would have worn a hat in his younger days. I wish he still did. His clothes may have seen better days, but there’s a curious dignity about him. He doesn’t appear to make any effort to engage with others, barely lifting his gaze from the path as he proceeds. Nobody stops to speak to him and, despite my curiosity, neither have I. I’ve smiled and mumbled good morning on one or two occasions, but he has never responded. It may be that he didn’t hear me, but it seems more deliberate than that, as if he’s either totally focused on the task in hand or is holding the world at arm’s length for some reason. If this is the case, and my instinct tells me it is, I respect his right to privacy. However, I have created a whole lifestory for him. I think of him as Robert. His wife Celia died several years ago and since then he has been brokenhearted and alone, locking out the world because the pain of her loss is his most precious possession. Celia is with him in everything he does, walking by his side each morning and straightening his tie before he leaves the house. I worry about him too. If I don’t see him for a day or two, I start to panic. I have no idea where he lives or if he has anyone to look out for him. Thankfully he always turns up, but one day he won’t and he’ll never know how much I miss seeing him. Isn’t it odd how strangers find their way into our hearts! Of course, many of us admire, even love movie stars, musicians and football players and look up to people we respect for one reason or another. We are often inspired by the actions of someone we may never meet, Greta Thunberg being a perfect example. It’s important, especially for children, to have role models but I don’t think we have to look very far to find them. Every older person is just someone who was born before us, done most things before us in fact. Everyone has a story. All we have to do is stop to listen. I’m going to make one more attempt with Robert. Perhaps you can find someone who deserves a moment of your time.

NEWS MARTLESHAM HEATH ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE Sunday 10 November, 3pm at Barrack Square IP5 3RF (near the main entrance to BT Adastral Park) Everyone welcome
1st MARTLESHAM SCOUT POST 2019 I can’t believe that the 2019 Scout Post is almost upon us. As usual, there will be post boxes throughout the village though, at time of writing, I cannot confirm where these will be so watch out for the December edition which will have all the details. The boxes go out on November 25 and the closing date is December 10. For the first time in a number of years, the price has changed and is now 30p per card. As last year, please put your money in a separate envelope within your card pack and please include your contact details in case I need to return any cards to you that I cannot send. The delivery area is IP1-IP5 including Kesgrave and Martlesham village. I can also take cards for the following locations: Bramford, Claydon, Barham, Great and Little Blakenham, Henley, Tuddenham, Westerfield, Sproughton, Grundisburgh, Playford, Culpho, Great and Little Bealings, Felixstowe, Trimley St Mary and Trimley St Martin and Kirton. Thanks in advance for your support as all the money raised is kept and used by the scout groups involved. Simon Smith
SPARE A THOUGHT CAMPAIGN 2019 Every year this local campaign supports Catch 22, a charity which supports young people aged 16 to 21 years across Suffolk who have recently left care. Many of these young people will be spending Christmas alone in supported housing, with no family and certainly no presents. We have a Christmas Gift Tree outside the pharmacy at Kesgrave Tesco and there will be another at Martlesham Tesco. You simply take a gift tag which represents one of these vulnerable young people, buy a Christmas gift and hand it back in to the pharmacy. We then wrap the presents and give them to Catch 22 who deliver the parcels to ensure as many people as possible get a Christmas gift and know someone from the community was thinking of them. If you would like to support this special campaign, look out for our Christmas Gift Tree from December 1. The response from the community last year was overwhelming. This year I hope just as many young people can have a smile put on their faces thanks to the kindness of strangers. Victoria Tovell, Pharmacist at Kesgrave Tesco Pharmacy
We also publish Spotlight on Felixstowe

NEWS THE BIG SUFFOLK QUIZ FOR BBC CHILDREN IN NEED One of the biggest trivia events the region has ever seen is being organised to raise money for this year’s BBC Children in Need appeal. The Hearing Care Centre has been organising charity quiz nights twice a year since 2010 and is this time joining forces with BBC Radio Suffolk to make this event bigger and better than ever. The Big Suffolk Quiz night will be held on Sunday 10 November at the wonderful events space at Trinity Park with a 7pm start. Teams can include between four to six members and entry is £5. A bumper attendance of more than 400 people is expected for the event. Thanks to generous support from local businesses, there are lots of cash prizes to be won and additional prizes can also be won in a giant prize draw. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, said: “The quizzes we hold every year are a real highlight for us and such a great evening. This year we wanted to do something different and make the event bigger than ever. We are so excited for BBC Radio Suffolk and Trinity Park to be involved and we feel so grateful to have their support.” BBC Radio Suffolk Breakfast Show presenter Mark Murphy (pictured with Karen Finch and Pudsey) who will help co-host the event, said: “Pull your friends and family together, round up a group of your colleagues at work or even come along with a local group or organisation that you are a member of. We really need your support to help raise money for this fantastic cause!” Tickets are expected to sell out fast so organisers are advising interested teams to book early to avoid disappointment. Call The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330 or visit: hearingcarecentre.co.uk/quiz
MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING Many thanks to everyone who participated in any way to make this year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning at St Michael’s Church such a great success. We sent £625 to the charity – an amazing total. It was great to see so many groups and individuals from the community taking part and enjoying working together for such a worthwhile charity.
MARTLESHAM HEATH HOUSEHOLDERS LTD MHHL Membership Thank you to all who have paid the 2019/2020 annual maintenance charge. If you haven’t yet paid, please pay as soon as possible. Also, if you would like to receive your membership invoices and AGM documents via email, you can register your wish to do so via our website. From the Homepage there is a link to enable opt in. The New Trim Trail By the time of publication, the equipment for the Martlesham Trim Trail should have now been installed and approved as safe to use through an independent post-installation inspection. All households in Martlesham Heath and Mill Heath will receive a leaflet in early November as to the location of the equipment and the suggested route that links it together. The trim trail will only be publicised by Martlesham Parish Council and Martlesham Heath Householders Ltd on both the main websites and Facebook pages as it is primarily intended for use by local residents only. We hope that you will make use of, keep fit and enjoy! Martlesham Heath 5K and 10K Road Race The 5K and 10K Martlesham Heath Road Race took place on October 6. I am pleased to report that the mitigations (mostly around numbers and parking) we discussed with the organisers before agreeing to the use of the Village Green seem to have worked well. I also observed more consideration towards maintaining residents’ road access. This year we had a Martlesham Heath residents’ allocation of 50 places, but at most 30 were taken up so the percentage of MHHL residents running was very small. As always, we would like to hear the views of our members with regards to this event, both good and bad, so we can have a true view of our member’s feelings. The Fire Although the fire that occurred recently was not on MHHL land, it was on fields very close to the back of properties on Heathfield. The response of the fire services was very quick and highly professional. Please note that you may find the MHHL Facebook page very useful when incidents such as this occur.
FRIENDS ON FRIDAY St Michael’s and All Angels Church, The Drift, Martlesham Heath IP5 3PL Every Friday from 10am to noon We are a friendly community group who enjoy coming together to share in chat, puzzles, table games and table tennis and snooker. Everyone is welcome even if it’s just for a refreshments and a chat.

Miscellaneous • Please note that changes to boundary fences, building alterations, etc. are dealt with by Graingers Ltd. The address and telephone details can be found under the Contacts tab on the MHHL website. • Please do not dump waste on the North Green or any other MHHL land. This is illegal and results in maintenance charge funds being used to clear it up. • Now that the bird nesting season has stopped, extensive maintenance on the greens will commence. • As we head into the winter months, if there are any issues that you feel need attention, please do not hesitate to contact MHHL by leaving a voicemail on 01473 612207, by emailing mhh@martlesham.org.uk or by writing to MHHL, PO Box 897, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich IP1 9PB.

NEWS MARTLESHAM PARISH COUNCIL One More Councillor Still Needed We are still looking for another candidate to reach a full council of 15 members. As a councillor representing your community, you will help keep it a great place to live and work. You will be supported in your role; training is available and funded by the council. Contact the clerk for more information or just come along to a meeting – details are below. Martlesham Trim Trail We are excited to announce that, at the time of writing, 10 pieces of equipment are being installed in seven locations around Martlesham Heath & Martlesham Common, to be ready for use in November. This has been a joint venture between the parish council and MHHL, funded and supported by East Suffolk Council. Leaflets are being delivered to all households and are also available from the council office. As part of this project you will also see some improvements to footpaths. New Council Facebook page Please take a look at our new Facebook page (@Martlesham Parish): www.facebook.com/MartleshamParish We are trying it out as another way to engage with the parish, to seek your views, to share with you what we are working on and to get information out to you quickly. This method of engagement will complement, and not replace, our regular Martlesham Monthly news items and updates, our website pages and noticeboard information. Climate Emergency Last month the council declared a Climate Emergency. The council aims to protect and promote the natural environment, lobby that developments are sustainable while reducing environmental damage, and seek to make our own operations carbon neutral. We are seeking your help to make sure we are all doing our own bit to preserve our common home for future generations. Please give us your practical suggestions on how we can combat climate change. We will be putting together a list of ideas; some may be low cost but others might need to be included as part of our budget for 2020/21. See the different ways you can contact us below. Fly-tipping Sadly, we are receiving increased reports of fly-tipping. Fly-tipping does not only include household rubbish/waste; it is also an offence to dump garden waste. Illegal waste disposal can be hazardous to the public, especially if it contains toxic material and risks damage to watercourses and soil quality. Please report fly-tipping to East Suffolk Council: 0333 016 2000 / www.eastsuffolk.gov.uk/waste/fly-tipping/how-to-report-fly-tipping Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence for which you can be prosecuted. The courts have various powers available to them to tackle fly-tipping, including imprisonment, substantial fines of up to £50,000, orders to pay costs and an order to deprive rights to a vehicle used to commit the offence. We are fortunate to live near the Foxhall Household Waste Recycling Centre where household waste can be taken for recycling or disposal. We live in a very pleasant parish – please help to keep it that way.
Overhanging Branches It’s that time of year again when we ask you to make sure that your shrubs or trees are not obstructing footways. However please dispose of the cuttings responsibly! FORTHCOMING MEETINGS Wednesday 6 November: Parish Council Wednesday 13 November: Recreation & Amenities Committee No full council meeting in December Wednesday 4 December: Finance & General Purposes Committee All meetings start at 7.30pm in the Parish Room on Felixstowe Road and are open to the public who are welcome to ask questions or make comments to the council during the adjournment. CUTS TO MARTLESHAM BUS SERVICES Our bus services were severely cut on 1 September 2019. You have let us know about the difficulties you have faced as a result of this. In October we met with representatives of First Bus and Suffolk County Council (SCC). They listened to our issues and told us about their constraints. It was agreed that proper consultation and a holistic approach to public transport is needed. We are also working in partnership with neighbouring parishes which have been adversely affected and ongoing pressure will be brought to bear to keep the improvement of our bus services as a priority. We are pressing for old timetables to be removed from bus stops, which are causing confusion. SCC has withdrawn its funding from providing timetables and are asking customers to look online or to download an app. This doesn’t suit everyone. First indicated that they might provide the timetables instead. Current timetables are available at: www.suffolkonboard.com The 66 bus no longer travels around Eagle Way; from the BT stop it heads back up the A12. The 66A includes Eagle Way but please be aware that it bypasses the Tesco stop, so unfortunately you now need to walk to the stop outside the Mercedes garage to return to Martlesham Heath village with your shopping. The 66A only runs approx. hourly during the day; there is no evening or Sunday service. The 64 and 800 do not travel through old Martlesham anymore. The 63 and 65 still stop outside Home Meadows Nursery, at the Water Bridge and Crown Point, making their way down Felixstowe Road to Tesco. Please be aware that this is not clear on the timetables as they show timing points at Tesco and the Duke of York pub.

The Jam and Similar Products (England) Regulations 2003 is a dense 11-page read and, while it might have escaped your notice, it’s important because it defines what jam is – beyond a sweet fruity spread that turns teatime into a delight. It must contain a minimum of 60 per cent sugars (including natural fruit sugar and added sugar). Most fruit jam must have at least 35 per cent fruit, but expect only 25 per cent in blackcurrant jam. Fruit preserves or conserves aren’t covered by the same regulations and typically contain much more fruit and less sugar.

SKYLARKING & TIN RIVER AT DANCE FOLKUS The October dance was great fun with over 80 people attending, including at least 30 youngsters. The lively barn dancing was enjoyed by all. Moving on to the next hoedown, we are delighted to welcome guest band Skylarking playing for our Woodbridge ceilidh on Friday 1 November from 7.30pm. Skylarking is a trio from East Anglia playing modern folk dance music. They play mostly arranged European tunes with unique drum tracks for each tune which helps drive the rhythm for the dances. Steve Wiles is their experienced caller and the brains behind their drum arrangements. He also plays melodeon and guitar. Sarah Holmes plays recorders, whistles and French or Spanish pipes. Alex Bartholomew plays fiddle and may also be known to locals as one of the driving forces behind the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust (EATMT) based in Stowmarket. Our taster song spot will be Tin River from the Waveney area of north east Suffolk. Their performance includes instrumentals, acapella three-part harmony singing and accompanied songs. The trio has built a solid reputation in East Anglia, having appeared at every FolkEast Festival, as well as folk clubs and local community entertainment venues. They have played together and separately for many years in various ensembles including Skelton Level, Bells Reaper, the Lucys, The Gatehouse Lads and Tony Hall’s Von Krapp Band. Members Skip Shipley, Mim Barnes and Marya Parker play melodeon, whistle and guitar. They all sing and are past winners of the Blaxhall Ship Chorus Cup. New dancers wishing to attend can book a discounted place by emailing dancefolkus@aol.com (no payment in advance) or you can simply come along on the night (entry £8 / children and students £3). If you need further information call Rob on 01473 610951. Visitors to Woodbridge and first-time dancers are always very welcome to attend our dances at Woodbridge Community Hall in Station Road IP12 4AU.

OUT & ABOUT MARTLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Monday 25 November: Cakes, Ale and Partying: Feasting and Fundraising in Medieval Suffolk by Kate Jewell
KESGRAVE WI Ann Day presented a very informative talk entitled The Remarkable Women of Ipswich at our October meeting. WI Trustee Celia Davies joined us for the evening to present a trophy to Kesgrave WI for gaining first place in the recent Centenary Fair competition.
Don’t miss our festive meeting when Kate will trace some of the festivals which were important to medieval Suffolk communities, looking at how they celebrated them and discussing how one particular community used festivity to raise a huge amount of money in a time of need. Meetings are held in Martlesham Heath Pavilion and start at 7.30pm. Admission is £2.50 and meetings are open to all.
DEBEN ROTARY HITS THE RIGHT NOTE The Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben held their annual Charity Busk on Saturday 5 October. It took place in the Thoroughfare in Woodbridge and raised £388, which will go towards the club’s support of various local, national and international charities. We would like to once again thank you for your generous donations. At a recent meeting we were pleased to be able to present a cheque for £700 to the East Suffolk Prostate Cancer Support Group. This was half the proceeds of our charity golf day, the other half going to our charitable trust. Our ever popular Carol Concert will take place on December 12 at Woodbridge School. As always, the concert will feature Martlesham Brass and Woodbridge School Chamber Choir, as well as seasonal readings and communal singing. Tickets are £12, to include a light supper, and can be obtained from Rotarian Martin Kenyon on 01394 386933 or from any of our club members.
IPSWICH & DISTRICT HISTORICAL TRANSPORT SOCIETY Wednesday 27 November: The Duke of Gloucester Steam Loco, History & Restoration, an illustrated talk by Steve Wakeland We meet at 7.30pm at the Salvation Army Citadel, 558 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich; entrance via the rear car park, visitors £3.50, members £1.50 including refreshments. 01473 422145 / www.idhts.co.uk
MARTLESHAM HARD OF HEARING GROUP An independent social group for people with any type of hearing loss. Partners and hearing dogs welcome. Our group meets from 10.30am to noon on the first Thursday of the month at Martlesham Pavilion. We charge £4 per session and frequently have a speaker. Last year we had everything from a local historian speaking to us about Prettys corset making in Ipswich to running a bed and breakfast in Colchester, as well as a lady who told us about her trip to Iceland (the country, not the shop!). We always have time to chat over coffee/tea and biscuits. We are very sociable and always welcome new people to the group. The pavilion has an excellent hearing loop and a lady voluntarily text types so even people with the most severe hearing loss don’t feel left out, something lots of people with hearing loss suffer. There is also free parking. Why not give us a try – we would love to see you? For more information please contact Steph Moon: 07741 310480 / steph.moon@hhas.org.uk

OUT & ABOUT SUFFOLK FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY Thursday 28 November: Thomas Seckford of Woodbridge: His Life and Legacy by much respected speaker and researcher Mark Mitchels When Thomas died in 1587, a distinguished judge and loyal servant of Queen Elizabeth 1, he could easily have faded from view, but he left a legacy ensuring that his name is remembered. To this day he continues improving the lives of Woodbridge people, providing money for an Alms house which encompassed a school, library and hospital. We meet at the Co-op Education Centre where the pedestrian entrance is at 11 Fore Street, Ipswich IP4 1JW, and the car park entrance is in Waterworks Street IP4 1JG. WOOLLY WONDERS Through November, come rain or shine, you’ll find us knitting and crocheting in The Runway Cafe (next to St Michael’s opposite The Douglas Bader) between 10am and noon every Thursday. We’d love to welcome more people of all skill levels – and none. We were given just over £70 in donations at the recent sale for Macmillan support. Many thanks to those who attended. We’ll be taking part in the Christmas Fayre on November 24, also at St Michael’s.
INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WOODBRIDGE At our October supper meeting, Chris Mason, our president, welcomed special guest Sue Verow who talked about her career in health care. Sue’s remarkable career has embraced the NHS, the military as a senior officer in the Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps, the private sector, statutory health care bodies and the Royal British Legion in Suffolk. She declared at the outset that none of her career was ‘planned’, it just ‘happened’, but surely there can’t be many people who have had such a breadth and depth of experience, not least of the way nursing has changed over a 50-year period. Her talk was truly absorbing, and Sue was warmly thanked by Anne White on behalf of us all. Later this month, we look forward to being the host club for an Inner Wheel District Rally, an opportunity for members of 14 Inner Wheel clubs to get together for an enjoyable day. In addition to our social activities, our club is now geared up for a busy Inner Wheel year supporting a range of local, regional, national and international charities, both on our own account – Chris’s chosen charities for this year are Over the Rainbow and The Eve Appeal – and in support of the two local Rotary Clubs. Two key dates in the calendar for 2020 are our quiz evening on February 28, and a Fashion Show on April 6. For more information, please visit; woodbridgeinnerwheel.org.uk

Finally, a reminder to consider hedgehogs around Guy Fawkes Night. Please check your bonfires carefully and move any before lighting up. A HEAVENLY GIFT Christina Johnston, an internationally acclaimed classical chart topper who has graced opera stages all over the world, will bring the sound of heaven to you at St Augustine’s Church on Saturday 23 November at 7.30pm. Despite her young age, Christina has addressed audiences all over the UK, Europe, Asia and South America, regularly singing with conductors and orchestras all over Europe and on numerous solo tours with orchestra around the Czech Republic, Slovakia, China and South America. Jade Hey, who will accompany on piano, is an accomplished pianist playing for events, rehearsals and concerts and is also a musical director. She teaches music and drama at Northgate High School as well as musical theatre and singing for the new full-time foundation course at the Children’s Theatre Company. Recent accolades include Les Misérables and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers with the Children’s Theatre Company and Grease with Northgate High School. Current projects include Oliver at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, The Slipper and the Rose at the Riverside Theatre, Woodbridge and Legally Blonde next year at Jerwood House on the Waterfront in Ipswich. A Heavenly Gift will feature beautiful songs from Mozart to Andrew Lloyd Webber. It will be a beautiful concert that will take you on a journey through your favourite sacred arias and songs. This very special evening will transport you on a heavenly journey, leaving you uplifted and ready for Advent. This purpose of the evening is to raise vital funds for The Beehive Charity, a home dedicated to the rehabilitation, education and loving support of vulnerable child-mothers and their babies in Nakuru, Kenya, set up by Jane and Alan Hutt from Rendlesham in September 2013. Jane and Alan saw a need that wasn’t being met to help girls, sometimes as young as nine, finding themselves pregnant and having to face choices they should never have to face. The Beehive receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations. All the money raised from the event will be used for the running of the two Beehive homes: rent, utility bills, food, wages for staff, medical and health care, education fees and living costs for the girls and babies. Tickets are £12. Doors open at 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase in the interval. MARTLESHAM CARPET BOWLS The club has had a tough start in the first division, losing both its opening matches. However, it was encouraging that two of our three losing teams ran their opponents close at Burstall. We are looking for new members. We meet at the Community Hall in Old Felixstowe Road from 1.30-4pm on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, and from 7.30-10pm on Tuesday evenings. We usually play three rounds of friendly games with a break for tea and biscuits after the second game. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played before as you will find everybody is willing to show you the ropes. It’s not physically challenging and the club provides all the necessary equipment. Each session is just £2 but the first is free. If you are interested, just turn up about 15 minutes before the start time and somebody will explain what we do. Alternatively you can ring our secretary, Ian Hunt, on 01473 611947, especially if you plan to come along on a Tuesday evening as we enter a team in the Suffolk Carpet Bowls Association League and home matches are on Tuesday evenings. SPORT / SCHOOLS KESGRAVE & NORTHGATE KARATE CLUB AUTUMN TERM AT BRIGHT STARS It’s hard to believe we’re coming to the end of another year. Time has been flying with a hectic schedule at the club over the past few weeks. On September 28 we held a very successful grading. Congratulations to all those who passed and moved up a KYU grade. It’s lovely to see all those new coloured belts being proudly worn in class. Our dedicated competition squad have been busy bringing home medals and trophies. Well done to you all for your hard work and fantastic results. All of their awesome achievements can be found on our Facebook page. Congratulations to Lauren Berry (pictured) who became the British Karate Federation International Open Kata Champion (7-9 years) 2019 at the British International in Motherwell on September 14. A fantastic achievement. We are a family friendly karate club and welcome new members. Karate is a great way of making new friends and there are always rewarding opportunities available. Regular practise has continual benefits, both physical and mental. It increases fitness/stamina, strength/tone, flexibility, balance, self-confidence, self-control, mental awareness and co-ordination. HEDGEHOG NURSERY The autumn leaves and windy days have had us dancing in the school grounds, cloud watching, collecting different shaped leaves and creating wonderful pieces of art using the colours of autumn. We have been inspired by a pumpkin we discovered growing in the kitchen garden. We opened it up to look inside, scooped out the seeds, looked at other kinds of pumpkins and used red and yellow to colour mix to make orange. We have made pumpkin collages, painted on the pumpkin, made paper models of pumpkins and we even heard a story about pumpkin soup and made some of our very own! We are curious about the world we live in. We have been cooking each week and going out on adventures into the school ground to discover the delights it has to offer, including finding a young horse chestnut tree with conkers! If you would like to visit and see us in action, please contact the school office on 01473 623790 and you will be warmly welcomed! Nursery Lead Teacher Mrs T Haig Hedgehog Nursery is open from 8.30am-3.15pm Monday to Friday for three and four year olds; in addition, we offer wrap-around care from 7.30am-6pm every weekday. For more information, please visit www.gorseland.net or contact the school office on 01473 623790.

SCHOOLS / CHURCH NEWS MARTLESHAM PRE-SCHOOL Wow, what a fantastic autumn term! All our new children have been warmly welcomed by our biggest boys and girls and we have enjoyed getting to know all the lovely new families. We have been looking at changes in the environment, watching leaves turn from green to yellow and oranges during our Little Explorer sessions in the local community, and have also visited the local market to buy vegetables to make warming autumn soup. This inspired the children and staff to create a fabulous role-play fruit and vegetable market of their own. The children took turns using their imagination to be stall holders and customers, used and extended their knowledge of numbers to handle money, and experimented with scales of different types to weigh their produce.

We are sure we have lots of Strictly stars in the making! Given that Martlesham Heath is an old airbase, it may seem strange to write about the sea. But recently I took a ferry over the channel from Dover to Dunkirk and for two hours we were at the mercy of the wind and the waves as we travelled what looks like a tiny distance. In fact you can see France from Dover quite clearly and on this occasion the sea was almost as calm as Aldeburgh boating lake, so for me it was a pleasant journey.

However, my friend who was travelling with me found it an entirely different journey. From the moment he set foot on the boat he felt queasy. Despite the lack of waves and wind, he struggled all the way, slumped over a table outside, desperately praying for it to be over. How we experience life can be just like this. For some it can seem as if it is plain sailing. A smooth crossing and all is well. For others, going through what looks like similar circumstances, life can be very different. A real challenge just to keep going. And when life is a challenge, we can look for something to hold on to – an anchor for our lives. Jesus offers us hope and a firm foundation on which to build our lives. In the Bible, we read ‘This hope is like a firm and steady anchor for our souls’ (Hebrews 6:19). So if your life is firm and steady, thank God for this. And if your life is all at sea, why not turn to God for his support? On the ferry there was nothing I could do to help my friend with his sea sickness, so I just sat with him. Similarly, if you see someone who is struggling, you may not be able to fix everything, but knowing you are there, traveling with them may make all the difference. Do look out for others – your presence may make all the difference. May God bless you in your journeys through life.
