A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

NEWS

So football season has ended! I’m not exactly a fanatic, but since Jack started playing our weekends are planned around his fixtures (insofar as we ever have a plan). I have spent many, many, many cold and blustery mornings on the sidelines since last September and now it’s getting a little warmer, it all stops and cricket takes over! I propose a swap; winter cricket and summer football. Perhaps I’ll start a petition. Camogie (women’s version of hurling) was always my game, but it’s interesting being the parent rather than the player. Mostly I just want Jack to be safe, but a win always makes for a better weekend. When we lose, the post-match analysis goes on and on and on... Every move, every injury, every tiny transgression is discussed adinfinitum and then re-enacted just to prove the point. I feign interest, but usually I’m more focused on defrosting my fingers and toes. All that aside I will miss my Saturday mornings with the mums and dads who turn up whatever the weather. We’ve become quite good friends, as have the boys, and it’s fun to spend time with people who share a common interest, some more vocally than others! I suppose that’s why I get so many submissions from groups and clubs eager to welcome visitors or participants, and I hope those of you looking to connect with others find what you need within these pages. For some the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat may suffice, while others might want to find a new hobby or try a new activity. Getting fit might be your priority or you may want to expand your knowledge of a particular subject by attending talks and demonstrations. Finding people with a similar mind-set, who share your interest and welcome you with open arms is, and I mean this sincerely, life-changing. I’ve seen it happen with my mum. She started playing bridge about five years ago and has made so many new friends as a result. In the last two years she lost one of her best friends to cancer and another moved away to live near her family. Without her bridge ‘gang’ mum would be lost and just as they have supported her through difficult times, she has supported them. If you’re feeling a bit isolated or lonely, I hope you find someone or something in the following pages which encourages you to reach out. And if you know someone who would enjoy or benefit from an opportunity to get out and about, perhaps you could be the one who makes it happen. As I could now that my Saturday mornings are mine again for a little while.

NEWS CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE & CHARITY SHOP On 30 June 16 children will arrive for a one-month visit with one more joining us on 10 July.

SUFFOLK ENERGY-FROM-WASTE FACILITY Annual Report 2018 SUEZ recycling and recovery UK and Suffolk County Council have been working in partnership for more than four years to dispose of Suffolk’s household waste left over after recycling.

Many people have dropped donations into our charity shop, but haven’t left their details so I’m unable to write personally to thank you. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this, but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions.

In 2018 the energy-from-waste facility put 266,135 tonnes of waste to good use, generating enough electricity to power 39,357 homes. This equates to a saving of over 64,000 tonnes of fossil fuels and 134,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The shop provides a great focal point for us and helps to raise awareness for our work. All staff are all unpaid volunteers and some have been with us since the shop opened. We really do need people who are able to offer a few hours a week to help out covering for holidays and sickness. Each session is only three hours so if you think you could be available to help with spot cover we would love to hear from you. No experience is necessary and you’re never on your own. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, so drop in and have chat when you are passing.

The 2018 annual report is now available to download with information about our performance last year from health and safety and the environment to our visitor centre and work in the community. Download a copy from the news section at: www.suffolkefw.co.uk/who-we-are/news

We urgently need donations of good quality second-hand clothing for the children throughout the year (new is very welcome too). Any age is appreciated as we provide clothing to the children when they come here and also to their siblings at home, plus other children who, for various reasons, are unable to be included in the programme. The main focus is for the visiting group who need sizes 6-7, 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10 years. Not only will the visiting children receive a much needed boost to their health, but they will also enjoy the trip of a lifetime, taking home memories that money cannot buy! Thank you for helping to make this possible. Link Chair Elizabeth Parker www.ccllmidsuffok.org.uk / 01449 760343

SUEZ Proposals to Process More Waste As we enter our fifth year, the facility is working efficiently, so much so that it could process more waste. However, the capacity of the facility is limited to 269,000 tonnes per year. SUEZ will therefore be applying to amend our planning permission and environmental permit to increase this limit to 295,000 tonnes per year, allowing us to use Suffolk’s award-winning facility to its full potential. We would not need to make any changes to the appearance of the building, or the way that we operate the facility in order to accept more waste. There would be a small increase in lorry traffic, we estimate an extra eight trucks would visit the facility per day, and overall lorry traffic would remain well within the agreed number in the original planning permission. Emissions from the facility are tightly controlled and would remain within the limits set out in the facility’s existing environmental permit to protect the environment. If you are interested in finding out more, we are holding information sessions for local people at the facility on Friday, June 7 from 4-8pm and on Saturday, June 8 from 10am-2pm. Members of our team will be on hand to answer any questions and there will be opportunity to take a short tour of the facility. The tours will take place at half past the hour; you will be able to sign up on arrival.

SnoASIS PARISH ALLIANCE (SPA) As you know, SnOasis Reserved Matters have been approved by the Planning Committee. However, the SPA has grave concerns about the amount of detail that even now remains unclear on crucial aspects of the application, such as drainage, traffic and transport and the environment. For this reason, the SPA asked that the Planning Committee delayed making a decision on Reserved Matters, but our views were ignored and the application was approved shortly before the district Ccouncil elections. Planning have now indicated that they no longer intend to work with the SPA, instead preferring to set up a group of the parishes that have a border with the site.

You’ll learn about Swift life stories, the reasons for the rapid population declines and most importantly what we can all do to help these amazing birds. Weather permitting, after the talk we will go outside to watch Swifts flying overhead and – hopefully – exploring the new nest boxes installed on the church in 2018. There is also a chance that Edward may be able to stream live images of Swifts from a fantastic next box webcam in Poland!

At this stage, we do not know what the future role of the SPA will be, if any. However, we will still try and ensure that there is a mechanism so that residents are kept informed of what is happening.

Entrance is free – donations to the SOS Swifts fund. Refreshments will be available.

SnOasis Parish Alliance Chairman Steve Plume

NEWS WHAT A YEAR FROM bRAVO!

WILDLIFE MEADOW OPEN DAY Paul and Alex Adams invite you to join them on Saturday 8 June between 11am and 4pm at The Stores Barn, Hemingstone IP6 9RJ. This small acre of land was planted in 2016, with six different types of grasses and sixteen English meadow flowers. Now flowering for the third year, this creates a vital habitat for many insects, animal and birds while playing a significant role in pollination. Alex commented: “We have returned this little pocket of rural Suffolk to its former state and we will be delighted if you can come along to enjoy the beauty of the meadow with us. We will be serving light refreshments on the day and there is ample parking nearby.”

What a busy year we have had at bRAVO! We have just finished our first musical of the year, our version of Fame. On April 27 our upper school took to the stage at Needham Market Community Centre to sing, dance and act their hearts out.

Donations gratefully received towards the British Heart Foundation (Suffolk), who fund over £100 million of research each year into heart and circulatory diseases, strokes, vascular dementia and diabetes.

SODS PRESENTS CALAMITY JANE Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s next musical, Calamity Jane, will be earlier in the year than usual, opening on Wednesday 17 July with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening and a matinee on Saturday 20 July at The Regal Theatre. Tickets (£14 adults, £12 concessions, OAPs & Under-18s) are on sale now with an opening night offer of £10 per ticket. Please call the box office on 01449 612825 or book online at: www.regalstowmarket.co.uk

On May 11 our lower school presented our version of The Lion King at the same venue. It was such a lively and energetic show starring more than 90 children and it was clear to see the hard work and effort they had made, and how much they enjoyed it too (especially the stampede scenes). Anna, the principal, said: “I’m so proud of everyone involved. They work so hard in class and put on such a great show for their families. The feeling was amazing from both students and the audience, the joy and energy in the students’ faces was contagious, it’s wonderful to see their hard work pay off.” Some of the older students will be leaving bRAVO! this year as they go off to university and college so it was a very emotional night for everyone. Anna said: “I am so sad to see the older ones go. I have watched them grow up and I will miss them so much, but I wish them all the very best of luck.” Along with other dance schools from the region, bRAVO! will perform at The Ipswich Regent on 14 July in our Stars of The Stage Show. We have two summer schools coming up in August (please see our website for more details) and we’re off the off to perform at Sadler’s Wells in November. If you would like to join in the fun, we meet every Friday evening at The Boys Brigade Hall in Stowmarket. For more details, please contact Anna at bravotw@hotmail.com or visit: www.bravotheatreworkshops.co.uk

GETTING READY FOR SUMMER AT SIMPLY BRASS Hello from everyone at Simply Brass. We have a lot of great news this month. We’re very pleased to say that following a very successful trip last year, we’ve been invited back to play at Bandstand on The Beach, part of the Aldeburgh Music Festival, on June 21. Let’s hope it’s sunny! Meanwhile, some of our members have been busy working hard over the winter and we’re very proud to report that three of our cornet players passed their grade three cornet exams with flying colours. Along with that we had a grade three violin, six on saxophone and a grade six flute – what a multitalented lot! We still have a few instruments looking for owners and we’d love to hear from you if you would like to join Stowmarket’s very own independent youth brass band. Or perhaps you’d like to book us for your event. Find us on Facebook or email us at: simplybrassstowmarket@gmail.com

NEWS THE REGAL IN JUNE

OPEN MIC SESSIONS

We’ve been working with a fantastic team of designers and architects for the past year and we’re so pleased to be able to bring you our vision for the Regal going into the future. The team has worked hard to preserve the theatre’s charm, while making it a venue fit for the 21st century. We’ll be inviting everyone to an event in July to showcase the project. But before all of that we have another month of fantastic films, live shows and satellite beamed events.

Last month’s session was on Thursday, May 16. We enjoyed some splendid music from Carys who has been playing material from her album, A Different Kind of Normal, in venues from Nottingham to Newcastle.

Aladdin: Live action remake of the Disney classic. A kind hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true. 2 hours & 8 minutes Rocketman: A musical fantasy about the fantastical story of Elton John’s breakthrough years. 2 hours John Wick 3: Super-assassin John Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin’s guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head, he’s the target of hit men and women everywhere. 2 hours & 10 minutes Tolkien: Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. 1 hour & 52 minutes Detective Pikachu: In a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective. 1 hour & 44 minutes Long Shot: When Fred Flarsky reunites with his first crush, one of the most influential women in the world, Charlotte Field, he charms her. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter and sparks fly. 2 hour & 5 minutes Late Night: Emma Thompson plays a late-night talk show host who suspects that she may soon be losing her long-running show. 1 hour & 38 minutes The Hustle: Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the men who have wronged them. 1 hour & 34 minutes

We were joined for the first time by Paul and Krysta who came all the way down from Lowestoft to play for us and treated us to some great original material. Peter gave us some poems and I played some blues. All in all, it was a great evening’s entertainment. Sadly the bar was a bit empty, but we had a good time. We welcome anyone at our sessions; whether you are a professional or have never sang or played in public before please come and join us. We meet in the bar at Needham Market Community Centre at around 8pm. Come and say hello. My name is Bill and I might play some blues!

ROTARY CLUB OF STOWMARKET GIPPING VALLEY The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley raised nearly £2,000 for local and international causes with two recent events. The first was their annual Charity Quiz Night at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket. Eight teams took part. The three top winning teams were given cash amounts to be used for charities of their choice with £25 going to Alzheimer’s Society, £37.50 to Shelterbox and £62.50 to Marie Curie. In total £852 was raised and the £514 profit was donated to Shelterbox. The second was also a regular annual fundraiser in which giant Easter eggs are distributed to local businesses (mostly pubs) for a draw held just before Easter. The photo shows Rotary members Arnie Bennett and Jeff Stern at Alder Carr Farm. One of the eggs was also donated to Uvedale Nursing Home.

The Secret Life of Pets 2: Continuing the story of Max and his pet friends, following their secret lives after their owners leave them for work or school each day. 1 hour & 26 minutes

The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley is looking for new members (both male and female) who are interested in good fellowship and service within the local community. They meet at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket on alternate Thursday evenings. If you would like to give them a try please contact Richard Tingey: 01284 787317 / richard@tingeys.co.uk

TAKING A BREAK The Working Time Regulations were put in place over 20 years ago, in 1998 to be precise. This established that if a worker works for more than six hours, then in most cases, he or she will be entitled to a rest break of 20 minutes, which should be uninterrupted. The rest break, however, will not apply in special circumstances, in which case a worker is entitled to an equivalent period of what is called ‘compensatory rest’.

In this instance, the claim was not successful. The worker’s claim went all the way to the Court of Appeal, which said that rest need not amount to 20 minutes uninterrupted if the rests that the worker does have, have the same value, in terms of contributing to his or her rest. This case serves as a reminder that employers should make workers aware of their rights to a rest break, and allow for encouragement of that by scheduling them where possible.

A case decided earlier this year looked at an employee who worked only intermittently – which meant that he was not entitled to the uninterrupted 20 minutes rest break. He was a signaller on the railway. However, as he worked intermittently, he was able to take a number of rest breaks. When added together, these came to 20 minutes or more. He claimed that Network Rail, his employer, should have allowed him additional time so that he could take a break of 20 minutes during each shift.

OUT & ABOUT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH STOWMARKET WILDLIFE GROUP Bonny Wood in Barking Tye The dry weather has helped us to get on well with our winter work programme and the volunteers have cleared around the pond and created more scalloped ride edges to let in the sunlight. Richard Cage and his Virgin Media colleagues have done a great job in widening the ride we share with James Buckle’s part of the wood and now it’s all done it looks fabulous. A significant milestone was passed in February when the midweek team coppiced the compartment by the field entrance: it was last done in the late 1980s and this is the first area to be recut under Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s stewardship of the wood. The hazel regrowth was really strong and it’s great to see the wood getting back into the cycle of coppice management with all the benefits for wildlife such as dormice, woodland birds and butterflies that this brings. The management plan for Bonny is now up for revision and we look forward to bringing more of the wood into coppice rotation, cleaning out the pond again and continuing to improve the rides so they are more attractive to wildlife. EVENTS Unfortunately we have had to cancel the rural and wildlife crime talk on Wednesday 26 June. However, we have arranged another speaker, Neil Dickinson with Back to Butterflies. This is Neil’s personal story of how a boyhood interest in butterflies was renewed later in life and explains why. The talk contains surprises and humour, but is also thought provoking because of its wider context. The talk will take place at Stowupland Village Hall. Admission is £2.50 including refreshments. The 2019 programme can be downloaded from: www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/wildlifegroups John Thompson: 01449 676471 / swtstowmarket@gmail.com

The ARK on King William Street is available for hire for children’s parties, small family parties, meetings, talks and fundraising events. Full kitchen facilities, reasonable size hall with a stage and additional room for meetings. For prices and availability please call Linda: 07940 581879

CODDENHAM OPEN GARDENS AND SCARECROWS Sunday 23 June, 11am-4.30pm There are many hidden gardens to visit in this beautiful village, plus the churchyard which is a county wildlife site. You may meet a scarecrow anywhere in the village and wonderful actor and comedian Roy Hudd will again be judging the competition (professional commitments permitting). There will also be a fun mini scarecrow I-Spy trail for children throughout the village and the village hall will be a hub of activity both inside and out. Katie’s Garden is supporting us and will be selling plants. Teas, coffees and snacks, street style hot food by E8 Food Company and Peter’s Ice-cream will all be available and a garden shop will be based in Haysel House which is located next to the village hall. All profits will be divided between St Mary’s Church, Coddenham and The Stone Foundation, a new local charity set up to provide housing and tenancy support for vulnerable people.

MID SUFFOLK VIDEO CAMERA CLUB

Plenty of free parking available. Admission £4 per adult, under-16s free.

It’s almost time for our AGM and the year has just rushed by with members very heavily involved in making a promotional film.

Please make a note of the date and let’s hope for good weather.

Coordinated by Mike Keeper, the three-minute film had to show what the club did. The challenge highlighted the need to present the most informative information in a short but relevant way. It was a challenge, but a good learning curve. You can access the film online by searching for Mid Suffolk Video Camera Club. We recently visited Duxford where a guide told us all about the Blackbird and showed us how the pilot signed their names on the plane. The Avro York plane was in Dan Air colours and was used in the Berlin Blockade, a period of history we had all forgotten about. The plane had spent 10 years in Lasham until 1974 where it was used as a bunk house for Air Scouts. In 1986 it was dismantled and successfully reassembled and restored at Duxford. Colin Wright has provided the film of Swanage Pirate Festival and our next meeting is when members show their interpretations by editing the original. It’s always interesting how many different interpretations we have to view. We have been viewing winning I.A.C. films from all over the world and show interpretations by video makers. It’s now possible to enter competitions on any continent and we were recently invited to enter one in an Australia video club! We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm at Hill Side, Stowmarket IP14 2BD. For information contact membership secretary Ann Evans: 01728 861566

GREAT BLAKENHAM CINEMA It was lovely to have such great support from the community in April for our Paddington screening. I do hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did. The Ipswich Bus Shelter residents and staff were a fantastic addition and a great help setting up and clearing away. It was so kind of the residents to show us their home. Jay and Gareth were brilliant answering questions and explaining the outreach work they do as well. Their cake sale raised over £90. Thank you to all who donated. It costs £10 a night for a bed so that’s nine nights covered for one person. If you would like to continue to help you could sponsor a bed, attend their Fun Day at Great Blakenham Village Hall on August 10 or even cook for the residents and deliver the food to the bus. For further details on how to sponsor a bed, please contact The Bus Shelter at: tiffersbeds@gmail.com / 07769 337521 This month’s film has been voted for by our Facebook followers. We look forward to opening our doors at 2pm on June 16 for a free cup of tea or coffee and to enjoy Mrs Doubtfire at 2.30pm. The cake sale will be raising fund for locally based charity Age UK Suffolk who support older people. Their information and advice team are incredible. With their knowledge they check that people are receiving all the financial help they can to live as well and happily as possible. They are asking people to hold their own coffee mornings, called ‘Chinwags’, in June to help bring people together and reduce loneliness.

OUT & ABOUT THE RIVER GIPPING TRUST Work on the permissive path on both sides of the river bank leading to the remains of the 200-year-old bridge abutments continues. Last year this path was six feet high in nettles and impassable. We continue to cut the weeds along the path, encouraging grass to grow through at the expense of nettles. Meanwhile we are working on funding and planning permission for the new bridge between the bridge abutments.

NEEDHAM & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY In May, a packed Burton Room welcomed Ian Seager with his slide show of dry garden and drought resistant plants. This was appropriate as our gardens seem to become dryer each year and planting schemes will need to be changed. Luckily, there are many plants that will be happy in dry conditions. On Sunday 2 June there will be an afternoon outing to Moverons, Brightlingsea, followed by an evening visit to Larks Hill in Tuddenham St Martin on 27 June. On 18 July there will be a day trip to Woburn Abbey Gardens. The next evening talk is on 6 June and will be by Dr Ian Bedford from the John Innes Institute on the subject of butterflies and garden plants to attract them. On 4 July Colin Ward will present a talk entitled Ferns – 50 Shades of Green.

A few years back the River Gipping Trust designed and installed a scaled down replica of the famous Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge. The bridge oak was felled by Jason Gathorne-Hardy from White House Farm, Great Glemham, where trust members prepared the timber in one of his barns. It was designed by Colin Turner, our eldest active member, and transported and installed at Pipps Ford. A good view of the bridge can be seen from the river footpath at Pipps Ford.

Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the community centre. We have varied, interesting and entertaining speakers, refreshments and a bring-and-buy plant stall. We also organise coach trips and evening visits to local places of interest. If you are interested, just turn up at one of the meetings or visit: www.nmdhs.onesuffolk.net

We welcome new members to the trust. Membership income is a very important part of our funding and will help us fund the new bridge. It’s only around £10 per year and you can download a membership form from the website or pick one up on the gate at Baylham and Pipps Ford. www.rivergippingtrust.org.uk

GIPPING WOMEN’S CLUB We meet on Tuesday evenings at 7.45pm during school term time at Needham Market Bowls Club, Crowley Park, Barretts Lane, Needham Market IP6 8BX. We are a friendly club with members from Needham Market and surrounding villages such as the Creetings. We always welcome new members to meetings and events and you can phone beforehand or just turn up one Tuesday evening. Our summer programme of events continues as follows: June 4: Running a B&B in Turkey with Jenny Gibbs June 11: Committee Meeting June 18: Lighthouse Women’s Refuge June 25: Medical Detection Dogs with Norma Howell July 2: Summer Evening Walk around Needham Market

The plants for the High Street containers have been ordered and by the time you read this, the pansies will have gone. They have given us a really good display this spring, but it is now time to give way to the summer flowers, which should be planted at the beginning of June. If we have a long hot summer like last year, a lot of watering will be required. If you are able to help with this, please call the number below. Hopefully, we will have replaced the Barretts Lane corner baskets and the containers at each end of the town. Some new plants will also be going in the sensory garden, so take a rest on the bench there and enjoy it. We will always welcome new members. If you would like to join us, or offer help, please contact Vera on 723424.

NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUB The indoor season at the Meadlands has now finished. Congratulations to Brian Locksmith, John Milliard and Margaret Thorndyke on their Buzzard team winning the Birdie League Division C, and well played to my own teams, Churnet and Grouse, on finishing second in both their competitions. The Stowmarket League outdoor season is now in full swing. Tuesday teams have had mixed results; the A team have won both their games while the B team have lost two very close games in their first year in the first division. The C team have won one and lost one. The Wednesday team have started strongly in defence of their title, winning 6.5-0.5 at Walsham, before losing a very tight game 4-3 to Gipping Valley. Our Thursday team is enjoying their bowling and hoping for an improvement on last year’s results. We have been congratulated on the condition of the green, so a big thankyou to John Cook, Trevor Harvey, Alistair Bailie and all the other volunteers for their work over the winter months.

Firemen Phil recently came to visit us, bringing along his new equipment and outfits for the children to try on. We have recently purchased some new resources including play trays which are more accessible for all children.

On Sunday 9 June we host a friends and family barbeque, and Sunday 21 July is President’s Day, when the president’s team plays the captain’s team, with teams drawn on the day. There will be two friendly matches against Coney Weston, date yet to be confirmed.

We are a small, rural, friendly setting based at Henley Community Centre. We pride ourselves, on having a high ratio of staff to children and therefore providing the maximum care and learning for the children.

The draw for the club pairs and triples has been made; please consult the noticeboard to see who you are playing with and against. A date for finals day has yet to be arranged; any suggestions for events to fill up the day should be forwarded to Alistair. A Roving Jack or a singles competition have been suggested. You need to do something to earn your ‘bacon sarnies’!

All staff are highly trained and continue regular training to build their knowledge further. Session places are currently limited and we now have children registering to start in September. If your child requires a space from September please contact us as soon as possible to check availability. We accept eligible 30hr funded children (the codes must be in place the term before they are needed). Children can join us from the age of two and we accept government funded and fee paying children. For further information please call 01473 833848 during session time (9am-3pm) or email or manager, Bridget Wyatt: enquiries@henleypreschool.com Bridget and the team

STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB It has been a very exciting few weeks for those of you following tennis: Andy Murray has revealed that he feels no pressure to play again (so may concentrate on developing his sports management company) and Joanna Konta reached her first clay court final, but then lost it having been a set and a break ahead. So, all very confusing at the top of British tennis, but what’s it like at the top of Suffolk tennis? We’re firing on all cylinders at the moment with entries about to close for the annual tournament running all through the summer. A big push has seen many more members sign-up for our flagship, but still fun, main event. Previous winners will be giving the silverware a final polish and maybe a little cuddle before hoping to win it back. Our Open Day is on July 7 and is the perfect way to see the club, meet some members and have some time on court having a bash. As usual we’ll be able to deal with juniors and adults so a real opportunity to get a flavour of the place. On July 28 the club will have a pitch at the Museum of East Anglian Life so another chance to grab some information and have a go at very mini-tennis! We’re also looking out for public events where some mini-tennis can be demonstrated and played. Send me a message if you’ve got something coming up. If you’d like information about the club, whether a junior, senior, beginner or advanced, get in touch and we’ll look after you. See you on court! STOWMARKET BADMINTON CLUB Stowmarket Badminton Club held its 13 annual junior tournament recently with 94 players from eight different junior clubs/groups in various age groups from under-10 to under-16 taking part. The aim was to get young players from junior clubs or groups in the county to enter and this year was yet another great turn-out. th

Under 10: Jed Millin and Max Ling from Debenham (pictured front). R/U Lewis Hall and Charlie Corbyn from Stowmarket.

During March and April we were in the period of Lent, when we reflect on the buildup to the Easter story. Our two Lent courses were well supported and many drew strength from them. Also during Lent we look at others less fortunate than ourselves, especially those in our link diocese of Kagera. To this end we raise money to be sent out to support them in the best way possible through our Lent lunches held every Saturday during Lent. Over this period we raised £421.10 which will be sent to our Bishop’s Kagera Appeal. During the latter part of Lent our monthly produce stalls and coffee mornings began outside the church, along with the coffee morning held inside the church. These raised £132 for our general fund. If you went along to any off these, thank you for your support.

Under 12: Harrison Day and Tom Warner from Abbeygate. R/U Keira-Mae Croft and Krish Jain from YMCA.

On Friday 21 June at 7.30pm the Jubilee Ladies Choir are coming to entertain us with their summer concert. Tickets are £7 on the door.

Under 14: Max Adderson and James Wing from Stowmarket (pictured back). R/U Dan Cook and Harry Plummer from YMCA.

As some of you may be aware, when we refurbished the roof last year, thanks to a generous donation we were able to incorporate 20 swift boxes under the eaves. While none have yet been used, during Swift Awareness Week (22-30 June) we are holding an open evening on Friday 28 when Edward Jackson, an expert on these fascinating birds, will give a talk on their habits. You can find more information on page 4.

The support from families and friends was excellent with the balcony at Mid Suffolk Sports Centre overflowing with spectators. The honours were well spread between the teams which included Stowmarket, Ipswich YMCA, Abbeygate, Bosmere, Bury Academy, Claydon, Debenham and Newmarket. The winners of the various groups were:

Under 16: Ben Ward and Sam Theaker from Abbeygate. R/U Laurence Chappel and James Norburn from Abbeygate. We were very lucky to have excellent support from our senior members who assisted the club coaches on the day as umpires, scorers and cheerleaders. The enthusiasm from the players and the backup from their parents was infectious and made our commitment to organising and running a junior section, alongside our adult club, so worthwhile. The club has prospered as a consequence with youngsters playing in local tournaments, attending county training and playing in county matches. Saturday 30 March also saw the end of season in-house tournament. All 40 of the juniors took part in the fun tournament in teams of three, earning medals for the best team before all the juniors went home with an Easter egg for their efforts. A big thank-you to all the coaches and helpers who have volunteered their time throughout the year to keep the junior section going. Long may it last! Finally, the end of season club tournaments brought together the majority of the club (plus invited guests) to take part in singles, handicapped doubles and mixed tournaments run over three Wednesdays in April. This year saw Isabel Lucas and Ryan Newcombe take the honours in the singles, Paul Adderson/ Ryan Newcombe and Janine Simonds/Mary Haywood winning the men’s and ladies doubles and Jo Marshall and Ryan Newcombe taking the mixed title. Chairman Andy Newcombe

HOME WORSHIP Someone from Christian Aid always leads our Home Worship in May as that’s when we have Christian Aid Week and do a door-to-door collection. In Needham Market we raise several thousand pounds each year. This year’s guest was Searaj Jeyasingh, originally form Sri Lanka, a Tamil and an Anglican, he came to Ipswich to work for BT as an IT expert. Searaj showed us two videos of Christian Aid work in Sierra Leone, where in a particular village there were no public health facilities. This particularly affected maternity services and they had a high mortality for babies born in childbirth. A trained midwife and others went into the village to provide the invaluable maternity services which they needed. We also read the story of Dorcas in the Bible who had done so much good work, became ill and was cured. The Rev Mary Playford from Christchurch will lead our worship in June. All are welcome. We meet at 10am on the first Monday of the month at 137 High Street, Needham Market and enjoy tea/coffee and a friendly chat afterwards. Wendy Marchant

On September 21 we welcome a group of musicians from our neighbouring parishes of Stonham and Creeting to entertain us with some light music. Our October concert is on Saturday 19 when we will be entertained by Stowmarket Concert Band and the young people of Simply Brass will be playing at our Christmas Fayre at the community centre on 23 November. On Sunday 1 December we will welcome, as always, Castleton Brass for our annual Christmas Concert. Please put these dates in your diaries, full details of all these events will be published over the next few months. The church is always open during daylight hours and welcomes visitors either to admire our famous hammerbeam roof or to enjoy peace and tranquility and a chance to put our hopes and prayers before God. talents. I hope that you will rise to the challenge when opportunity knocks for you – who knows what you can achieve!

The Rev Rita Carr (Methodist) 01449 612619

Reverend Mary Playford

You may recall that in April I was looking forward to a walking holiday in Yorkshire. Well, unfortunately I didn’t get there due to a back problem. Naturally I was very disappointed, but now I had a ‘free week’ and was determined to make the most of it!

Sunday Morning Worship: 10.30am (including crèche and Sunday Club)

Fortunately the weather was kind and by the end of the week when I headed north (but not as far as Yorkshire) to visit my family, I had, with the aid of my pressure washer, sand paper and wood stain renovated some garden furniture. I must say I am very pleased with the results, to say nothing of being happy that I don’t need to spend money on new chairs, and have done something to reduce waste. They say ‘The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry’, which is so true! We can be happily planning something and we get stopped in our tracks. It’s what we do after those well laid schemes have been thrown into disarray that’s important though.

Service of Holy Communion: Second Sunday WEEKDAY ACTIVITIES IN CHRISTCHURCH HALLS Tiddlers: For mums and babies up to four years, Monday from 9.30-11.15am in term time. Contact Victoria: 07725 037026 Scrabble Club: Monday from 2-4pm. New players please contact Sheila Norris: 01449 720871 Knit for Peace: First Wednesday, 2.30-4pm. Do we throw up our hands in despair and resolve to do nothing except moan and feel sorry for ourselves, or do we look for opportunities to make the best of the situation?

OTHER REGULAR BOOKINGS Weight Watchers: Saturday 8-10am

I like the word ‘opportunity’ and at Christchurch I think the congregation are fed up of me inviting them to sign up for the ‘opportunity to make the tea, arrange flowers, to be part of a team organising an event, being part of a Bible study group etc.’!

Moo Born Baby Massage: Monday 12.30-2.30pm

The dictionary definition of the word ‘opportunity’ is: ‘a time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something’.

Rainbow Guides: Thursday 5.30-6.30pm (term time)

It’s a very positive word. So, when the set of circumstances that confront you are not quite what you had hoped for, or there is a vacant role in the community, the club (or church!) you belong to, maybe you can consider whether this is an ‘opportunity’ for you to do something positive. Do you remember the old TV show Opportunity Knocks? It was a talent show and contestants took the opportunity offered to them to showcase their

NEEDHAM MARKET EVANGELICAL CHURCH We are very grateful to God for the beautiful weather we were given on Good Friday because it meant many people came to enjoy Needham Lake and its surroundings. We were there too, in the afternoon, to sing the praises of the Lord who died for our sins and rose again from the dead, and to tell all who would listen about our Saviour. Perhaps you were there and heard something of what was going on, or received one of our leaflets. Perhaps you were annoyed that we were disturbing your peaceful afternoon. Perhaps you were pleased that people can still peacefully express their beliefs in public, even if you don’t agree with them. Perhaps you were truly thankful that Christians were trying to make the good news of the gospel known. Whatever your reaction, but especially if this far in your life you have never given much serious thought to these things, I hope that your mind will go back to that lovely sunny afternoon and think about the message that you heard and ask yourself what it means to you and what you should be doing
