A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’m going to return to a previous subject this month because it’s constantly on my mind. Every time I drive, every time I walk down a busy street or stand in a queue, and very occasionally at home, I’m struck by how impatient we have become. Almost everyone (and I include myself here) is so terribly busy, we seem to live our lives at a rate of knots. It’s utterly exhausting, but also brings less attractive qualities – such as insensitivity and selfishness – to the fore. This morning I witnessed three incidents of poor behaviour – one by a driver outside my son’s school, the second at the Co-op where a terribly important person huffed and puffed in obvious annoyance behind a lady who was struggling to find the correct coins to pay for her coffee, and the third at a pedestrian crossing when not one but two drivers ignored the couple waiting to cross. Not major incidents I know, and I don’t intend to draw major conclusions based on one bad morning, but am I the only one who thinks we have become a little less caring of others in our day-to-day lives? Often it’s the little things which make the difference, a polite wave when a driver gives way, a smile and a thank-you to a shop assistant, holding a shop or office door open, being a little kinder to a driver who may be unfamiliar with the road or just not as quick to react… My granddad was known to say: “Please and thank you will take you around the world.” It’s not entirely realistic, but the connotation is clear. Christmas can be a hectic time and the extra stress and expense may create additional frustrations when we’re out and about, but let’s resist the urge to snap back. What’s five minutes either way? You’ll get there in the end and do it without getting stressed or upsetting someone along the way. Kindness is a quality we all need to embrace a little bit more and it’s entirely free to give. Perhaps my granddad wasn’t so far off the mark after all. And on that note, my colleagues and I here at Mansion House Publishing wish you and yours the very best for the Christmas Season and the New Year.

NEWS CCT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Whether you are retired and looking to keep busy or a parent with spare time while the children are at school, or maybe a student looking for work experience, then the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) has a volunteering opportunity to suit you. With 20 churches in Suffolk alone, all CCT churches are Grade II listed or above and most are open and ready for visitors all year round. The CCT is the national charity protecting historic churches at risk, repairing the damage from sometimes years of neglect and then working with local communities to bring them alive again. Volunteers are critical to the CCT’s ability to care for, open and promote these often hidden treasures and roles include stewarding, event organising and fundraising, as well as practical roles such as cleaning and gardening. The need is for new volunteers to help ensure that these churches are open, used and there for future generations. Being a volunteer will give you the opportunity to meet likeminded people, learn new skills and even advance your career. St Mary’s Church in Badley is one of Suffolk’s most remarkable medieval churches and has an atmosphere of great peace and stillness. The church is currently open weekends and bank holidays, with two services a year including a Christmas Service on December 8. We need volunteers to join the dedicated volunteers who look after the church and work with us to investigate ways it can be used. There will be a Christmas Memory Tree in Badley sponsored by Morvend in Badley where visitors are encouraged to leave a name of a loved one, past or present, on a decoration and hang it on the tree. The Memory Tree will be in the church throughout December and for 12 days after Christmas. For more information on volunteering visit: www.visitchurches.org.uk
WALKERS ARE WELCOME Walkers Are Welcome is a national accreditation for towns and villages to promote walking within their community and promote themselves as walking destinations for tourists. The scheme is community-led but there is support from Suffolk County Council’s Green Access Team and the scheme is supported by Mid Suffolk District Council. To date the accreditation has been achieved by Clare, Shotley and Eye who together have set up a Walkers Are Welcome Alliance group to share ideas, best practice and encourage others to get on board. All three towns in Suffolk have seen benefits to their community’s health and their tourism economy. If you are interested in learning more, or would like to attend one of the group’s regular meetings, please contact Anna McGowan on the Green Access Team at: DiscoverSuffolk@suffolkhighways.org Mid Suffolk District Councillor Mike Norris

NEWS NEEDHAM MARKET ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Poppy Appeal
The amount raised last year by the Poppy Appeal in Needham Market and District, which includes Creeting St Mary, Creeting St Peter, Baylham, Badley and Akenham, was a magnificent £7,397. How close we may come to that record this year will soon be known as the count is under way and the total will be announced in the next edition.
Thanks to all members of our communities who generously contributed so much, and especially to the volunteer collectors who undertook house to house collections, and collected at the boot fair and other special events, including the High Street collection in Needham Market by Army Cadets which raised £287, in addition to NM RBL Chairman Jim Darrah’s solo collection of £106 the week before. Many thanks to everyone who donated. Last year the Poppy Appeal raised over £50 million nationally which is being used by RBL to provide a wide range of medical and psychiatric support to injured members of the Armed Forces, welfare support for their next of kin and dependents, plus material support for veterans and resettlement training for those leaving the Armed Forces. RBL has helped over 40,000 beneficiaries in different ways over the past twelve months. May we clarify an issue which appears to have confused some people. There is no restriction on buying, selling or wearing any form of poppy emblem on any day of the year. There is however a restriction on holding street collections. This is a sensible precaution, laid down by local authorities to prevent the many good causes from holding unrestricted Flag Days every weekend of the year. Such events are ‘rationed’ and RBL is allocated the two weeks prior to Remembrance Sunday, which we observe. Supermarkets have a similar policy. Remembrance Sunday (RBL Colour Party with Cadet Reece Eades) It is estimated that more than 350 people attended the service in St John’s Parish Church in Needham Market and observed the procession along the High Street on Remembrance Sunday. Mr Stephen Miles, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, the Queen’s Representative for our area, attended the service with his wife Petrina. The procession was led by a contingent from the Army Cadet Force Detachment at Wattisham, which is affiliated with NM RBL and included representatives of the town council, community associations, emergency services and youth groups.
Children from Bosmere Community Primary School participated in a service held at the Millennium Memorial on Barratts Lane on Armistice Day, Monday 11 November where they laid a wreath, together with Town Mayor Councillor Steve Philips .They also recited the poem In Flanders Fields and created a Garden of Remembrance with a Second World War theme, while singing Keep the Home Fires Burning. It was a most emotional tribute. The garden includes silhouettes of D-Day soldiers and HMS Suffolk. Around 100 children from Creeting St Mary Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School had listened to a talk on the significance of Remembrance given by an RBL member. On Armistice Day the children, together with staff and several parents and members of the village community, attended a service in school. Pupils read the In Flanders Fields after which the names of the Fallen from Creeting St Mary were read aloud by The Rev Payne. As each name was read, a child laid a poppy in a tray of sand. The Legion wreath and a wreath made by the children were laid at the temporary altar and then one of the children read the RBL exhortation, after which two minutes’ silence was impeccably observed by the youngsters. The service concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. NM RBL Branch We usually meet on the last Thursday of February, April, June, August and October at 7.30pm in the Lounge at Needham Market Community Centre. We are a sociable and informal group and we welcome visitors, whether members of RBL or not. We enjoy a varied programme of events which includes talks, (not always on a military theme) and excursions. COFFEE MORNING FUNDRAISER Improved Access at Needham Market Railway Station A recent coffee morning raised £150 for the campaign to get improved access to Needham Market Railway Station. Thank you to everyone who helped by donating goods and coming along to support. Jen, who started the petition, handed out leaflets describing the progress to achieve this. District Councillor Mike Norris is on the working group with Mid Suffolk District Council and Network Rail and came along with his wife Sheila. Andrea Davis took charge of the draw, Jennifer Nott looked after the bring-n-buy, Jen Overett the cake stall and Margaret Saville and Hella Crosby made the tea and coffee. NEWS FROM FLOOR-LESS TO FLAWLESS Battisford Village Hall celebrates £32K renovation Earlier this year, Battisford Village Hall benefited from new flooring – replacing rotten joists with a new surface and underfloor heating, new panelling and complete redecoration. The work was made possible by grants from Mid Suffolk District Council, Suffolk County Council, Battisford, Combs and Ringshall Parish Councils, Stowmarket Town Council, The Geoffrey Burton Trust and the National Lottery. The hall, in Straight Road, is already home to a number of local clubs and organisations, including Battisford Pre-school, the village snooker club, carpet bowls club, gardening club and yoga classes. The refurbishment means that now even more users can enjoy the modern facilities. A recent open day gave representatives from all the groups a chance to celebrate together with visitors from Battisford History Group, Battisford Parish Council and the local church. Mid Suffolk District Councillor Dan Pratt – ward councillor for Battisford and Ringshall – was also among the guests. Dean Williams (pictured on the right with Councillor Pratt), Chairman of the Battisford Village Hall Committee, said: “Everyone has worked so hard to ensure that our village hall remains at the heart of our community. On behalf of everyone who uses the hall, I’d like to thank all our supporters – in particular those organisations and individuals who helped us fund the work and to our local volunteers who put so much into keeping Battisford a busy and thriving rural village.” For enquiries/bookings contact: 01449 674852

bRAVO! THEATRE WORKSHOPS bRAVO! Theatre Workshops have been on stage at Ipswich Regent Theatre again, alongside nine other schools from around East Anglia. On Sunday 11 November, more than 300 children danced and sang the night away in a show which was a treat for the hundreds of spectators. These shows offer such an exciting opportunity for small groups to perform on a large stage in a venue that would otherwise be unavailable to them. It was a varied, high energy show from start to finish and the talent and hard work that everyone had put in was very clear to see. Forty-nine children from bRAVO! Upper School took part and will be performing the same two routines later this month at Sadlers Wells in London. bRAVO! Principal Anna Damigella said: “I’m so proud of everyone, my students have worked so hard and they danced their socks off, their performance was fantastic. I love to see them on stage enjoying the whole experience, well done to them and to all the other schools involved.”
MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILLOR REPORT: MIKE NORRIS & STEVE PHILLIPS Submitted on November 7 Needham Lake Visitor Centre Plans for a visitor centre and café at Needham Lake are progressing well. The final version of the building design, incorporating feedback from the public engagement event on Thursday 10 October, was submitted as a planning application on Monday 4 November. Subject to planning approval, the next steps will be to appoint a preferred contractor for the construction phase, and then a preferred operator to manage and run the facility. If all goes according to plan it is hoped that the visitor centre will be operating during the latter part of the summer season next year. More free swimming for youngsters Following a successful summer take up, Mid Suffolk District Council has extended its free swims offer and will also be running the initiative over the Christmas holidays too from 20 December to 5 January inclusive at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre and Stradbroke Swimming Pool, which aims to help promote healthier and active lifestyles in the district. Mid Suffolk District Council Locality Awards Awards are available to properly constituted local groups and organisations with their own bank account and a treasurer, and ideally should be for specific projects, but can cover such costs as training for officers and volunteers within those organisations. They are not available to individuals and cannot be made retrospectively, i.e. for items already purchased or ordered, and the minimum award is £250 per application. The current scheme will close for applications on 31 December. If any
6
groups are interested in making an application please contact your local district councillors for an application form (contact details below). Fly-tipper billed more than £1,500 An offender dumped 12 sacks of household waste in November 2018 in Stonebridge Lane, Stowupland. Sgt Brian Calver from the Suffolk’s Rural Policing team found the sacks during a routine patrol and the offender was traced. Following a guilty plea, the court fined the offender £1,000, along with costs of £477.41 and a victim surcharge of £100. The Suffolk Waste Partnership, which consists of all the Suffolk councils including the county and partners, is also hoping to launch a campaign over the winter aimed at reducing fly tipping in Suffolk. Free recycling talks for residents Suffolk’s Recycling Centres offer free Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – not a Waste of time! sessions to interested parties to learn more about ways to reduce waste and recycling. NEWS GREAT BLAKENHAM CINEMA Wow, where has this year gone! It’s incredible to think that this time last year a village cinema had gone from being an idea to receiving funding and all looking like it might just be possible to pull off. I feel very lucky that this has all become a reality thanks to the belief and hard work of the amazing volunteer crew and the support of everyone, especially those through the doors. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible. Our Christmas showing on 1 December of Elf, complete with craft tables before and a visit from the man in red after, may have already happening when you read this edition. We will also have had the cake sale for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH). As requested, we start the new year with Yesterday (12a). Featuring music by The Beatles and with some of Yesterday being filmed in Suffolk, it should be a very good way to kick off 2020. In February we will bring you Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall in Mrs Lowry & Son (PG), a portrait of the artist LS Lowry and the relationship with his mother, who tries to dissuade him from pursuing his passion. In March we will celebrate our first anniversary with Bohemian Rhapsody (12a), the story of the legendary British rock band and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid. We cannot wait to show Downton Abbey. As soon as they announce when it will be licensed to village cinemas we will confirm when we will be showing it. Please don’t forget to add our future screening dates to your diary: 26 January, 23 February, 29 March, 26 April and 31 May. For those of you who haven’t heard of Great Blakenham Cinema, we are a not-for-profit run purely by volunteers with the aim of bringing the community together. A warm welcome awaits at Great Blakenham Village Hall, Mill Lane, Great Blakenham IP6 0NJ. Doors open at 2pm for a 2.30pm start, with free tea, coffee or squash on arrival courtesy of The East of England Co-op. Tickets are for sale on the door only for just £4 for adults and our revised price of £1 for under 18s. Carers, when accompanying the person they care for, have free entry. If you have any film suggestions or if your charity wishes to run the cake sale to raise funds, get in touch via our Facebook page or contact Becky at: greatblakenhamcinema@outlook.com / 07852 472082 If you wish to let us know in advance that you will be attending, send us a message on Facebook @Greatblakenhamcinema or ping an email our way to help us know how many people to expect. While we can get more chairs out, we would hate to run out of cake!
CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFE LINE & CHARITY SHOP How time flies! Already we are on the countdown to Christmas and not only are we busy getting ready for the arrival of our December group of children, we are also busy preparing for our visit to Belarus for our Father Frost Christmas program. We will not travel until January 3, but we will still be in time for Christmas as this isn’t celebrated in Belarus until January 7. As we did last year, we will be delivering Christmas stockings to children who would not otherwise receive a gift at all. All of the families we visit are so pleased; they are in awe that people would come all the way from England to bring them presents and it is amazing to see how much pleasure the visit gives, not only to the children but to the families in general. Rarely can we leave a home without them trying to press us to eat with them or wanting to give us a gift in return, even when they have nothing. I remember one time when a lady tried to give me her jacket as she had nothing else to give but wanted so much to show her appreciation. The strapline of the charity is Giving Hope to Live and small acts such as this, together with bringing the children to the UK for health respite holidays, go such a very long way to show people that there can be a better future. We thank everyone in Stowmarket who continues to support us, individuals and organisations alike. In particular our friends at Stowmarket Football Club who took us in and treat us like family. I hope Christmas brings you everything you wish for. Elizabeth Parker: 01449 760343 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk / FB: @Ccllmidsuffolk

FATHER CHRISTMAS AND GDPR Father Christmas was confused, But then it didn’t take much. “I really can’t understand this GDPR business, and all that,” he said to no-one in particular. “What am I supposed to do about it?”
“So, when you receive all of the letters from the children requesting what they would like for Christmas, you will need to keep all of their data safe and store it in a proper way – not just leave it on your desk in a big heap like you normally do for everyone to read!”
“Why?” said Mrs Christmas, who happened to be listening. “What is the problem? I thought it was all fairly straightforward?”
At last, Father Christmas finally understood what GDPR meant and what he had to do. Now, in addition to their presents, every child can look forward to receiving a privacy notice setting out all of their rights and how the data from their letters will be stored!
“Well, it really is confusing,” said Father Christmas. “I mean, surely GDPR stands for Gnome Delivered Present Requests, and everybody knows that elves are my assistants, not gnomes!” “Are you being serious?” said a rather taken aback Mrs Christmas, not really believing what she was hearing. “I am,” said a defiant Father Christmas. “You would think they would be able to get a simple thing like that right!” Mrs Christmas took a deep breath and got ready to explain. “That isn’t what it means at all,” she said in her most patient voice. She then went through, in quite simple terms, what it actually meant, and how Father Christmas needed to make sure that any data he received is dealt with in the proper way.

Get ready for a magical, unforgettable experience at the Museum of East Anglian Life this Christmas with Santa at Home on the weekends of 30 November and 1 December, 7 and 8 December, 14 and 15 December and 21, 22 and 23 December. With a little bit of magic, Santa has transported his living room from his home in the North Pole to the museum, ready to meet children and hear their Christmas wishes. Meet Pudding, Santa’s top elf, and receive a special gift with a personalised experience for your child. There’s no queuing, book your timeslot and turn up ready to be whisked away to meet Santa. While in Abbot’s Hall you can have a go at hunting for the elves, or visit the Christmas trees as part of the Stowmarket Christmas Tree Festival. Children are £6 and you can add an additional child to the same timeslot for £4. Please answer the name and age questions so we can personalise the experience. Tickets are available from the museum shop or online at: www.eastanglianlife.org.uk/santaathome
NEEDHAM OPEN MIC SESSIONS The open mic session in October was brilliant with eight acts including a visit from our friends Inside Out, at full strength. We were also graced with performances from James and Marcela, who sang a couple and recited an interesting poem about body piercing. This month’s gig will be on Thursday 19 December. Please come along and join us; there will be some fine entertainment and Martin has threatened to supply nibbles!
Looking forward, the choir have planned an exciting programme to keep them busy. They have arranged a Singing Day in Woolpit Village Hall on February 8 when members and other singers will sing Verdi’s Requiem. That promises to be an amazing experience and will begin to prepare the choir for their appearance at The Apex in 2021. Stowmarket Chorale has stepped up their advertising and promotion efforts, which is paying off because the choir continues to grow with new members and ticket sales are better than ever. The choir has a website and a Facebook page. Choirs are gaining in popularity due to the knowledge that singing is said to be hugely beneficial for many reasons, including the feel-good factor of taking part and creating something beautiful with a group of like-minded people. This fortunate choir will enjoy learning the music of Faure’s Requiem in the spring term, which they will perform in Stowmarket on 21 March 2020. Future concerts include Will Todd’s Mass in Blue and Handel’s Messiah. For further information contact secretary@stowmarketchorale.org.uk www.stowmarketchorale.org.uk

NEEDHAM MARKET SOCIETY Our meetings are held once every two months in the Burton Room at Needham Market Community Centre’s at 7.30pm. Annual membership is £7.50, but visitors are always welcome for a fee of £3. The committee has taken an active part during the year in contributing to town matters relevant to the aims of the society in protecting the character and architectural unity of the town. In addition, 2019 has been a busy year for the committee who always enjoy the pleasant task of putting together the programme of meetings and events which our increasing membership appears to appreciate. Over the year we have covered archaeology, traditional Morris dancing, hat making in Needham Market and a couple of Suffolk murder mysteries. In addition, a visit by more than 20 members to see the glorious roof of Huntingfield Church was a wonderful experience. We now look forward to our first 2020 meeting on January 22 when our old friend Roy Tricker will regale us with stories of Suffolk’s eccentric clergy. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Wednesday 4 December: Round Tower Churches of Suffolk and Norfolk by Stuart Bowell There are a variety of theories as to why some churches have round towers, but it is known that these are very early structures, some predating the Norman conquest. The vast majority of these towers are found in Suffolk and Norfolk. Stuart is a member of the Round Tower Church Society. There will also be a fundraising treasure hunt and seasonal fare. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 5 February when David Lilley will talk about Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society. We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall IP14 4BQ. There is plenty of space to park. Visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members and £3 for non-members. For more information, please contact Judy Clarke: 01449 615386

You don’t have to be an expert photographer; all you need is a camera and a real interest in using it. Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, usually on the second and fourth Monday of the month between September and June. We start arriving at around 7pm for a 7.30pm start. We’d love to see you there, so why not join us?
NEEDHAM MARKET & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Another successful year for the society finished with a talk about Cambridge College Gardens by Rod Tibbs. Most of the colleges have their own beautiful gardens and are in the city centre, all within walking distance. Many are open to the public but most people are unaware of them as they are behind buildings and walls. They are well worth a visit and I suspect many members will be off to Cambridge next summer. In October we learned about the history of orchards in East Anglia, and how they have gone from many to the few that we have today. Members also enjoyed the annual supper at Stonham Barns.

The 2020 programme was handed out at the November meeting and we can look forward to more entertaining evenings starting with the AGM on 6 February with a talk by Chris Field on The Art of Composting.
STOWMARKET LOCAL HISTORY GROUP
There will be four outings next year, details of which will be advertised.
Monday 16 December: A play Wot Annette Wrote Performed by the committee, this is a comical play based on a theme chosen by Annette and acted by us. Our amateur status and inability to learn the lines in time are likely to makes it even funnier. The play will be followed by our usual Christmas refreshments, when we ask that those attending bring a small plate of food to share.
Wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the community centre. We have varied, interesting and entertaining speakers, refreshments and a bring-and-buy plant stall. We also organise coach trips and evening visits to local places of interest. If you are interested, just turn up at one of the meetings or visit: www.nmdhs.onesuffolk.net
Monday 20 January: The History of a Finborough Road House by Geoff and Jill Marchant Meetings are held at 7.30pm at Hillside Community Centre, Stowmarket IP14 2BD. Members £1, non-members £3.30. For further details contact Jeannette Baldry: 01449 675271 www.stowmarket-history.co.uk
NEEDHAM IN BLOOM It has proved to be a good year for the flowers in the High Street, ours and some lovely pots and baskets belonging to residents and shops. Our cannas have been put away for the winter to be used again next year. They have done so well there should be some available on the plant stall in the spring. A new member of our team has offered to build a website for us – details at a later date. Our next fundraising event will be at community centre table-top sale on December 1 when we will run a tombola. This will be followed by a quiz in March. Please support us. We welcome feedback so if you would like to contact us please email us at: pamnmib@gmail.com Our AGM will be held early in the new year. We wish everyone a peaceful Christmas and prosperous new year. We always welcome new members, so if you would like to join us, or offer help, please contact Vera on 723424 or come to the next meeting.

STOWMARKET WILDLIFE GROUP The Stowmarket group meetings in 2019 covered a very diverse range of subjects centred on the plants and animals of Suffolk. The speakers were informative and often amusing, revealing much about what goes on around us, which is so often unnoticed. Atendance was good, and one attracted the biggest audience since the group was established. The wildlife walks were also popular and most enjoyable. The programme of events for 2020 is established, and starts after the Christmas and New Year break. Brocks and Foulmarts, an illustrated talk with Darren Tansley Wednesday 26 February, 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall Darren, an Essex Wildlife Trust River Catchment Coordinator, will talk to us about the changing fortunes of these animals from the 1500s to the present day, their folklore, ecology and prey. From tiny weasel to elegant pine marten he will uncover fascinating facts and new discoveries. Admission is £2.50, children free. Please pay on arrival. Hearing loop available on request. Hedgerows, Herbs and Medicines, an illustrated talk with Martin Sanford Wednesday 29 April, 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall. A look at some common plants of Suffolk hedges and waysides, their use for foods and medicine and how we use them sustainably. John Thompson: 01449 676471 / swtstowmarket@gmail.com

Christmas is a special day for the team at Blue Cross pet charity rehoming centre in Wherstead. The centre is closed to the public so the team get to spend the entire day with the cats and dogs on site – handing out presents that have been donated by members of the public to the pets, taking the dogs out on long walks and, of course, giving lots of fuss and treats to all. Over Christmas there are usually around 35 dogs and cats on site to care for. The team will feed them their breakfast, open presents and take the dogs out on a long dog walk in the nearby woods. Among those working this Christmas will be Animal Welfare Assistant Susie Winship. Susie has worked the last six Christmas Days at the centre on Bourne Hill. Susie, who lives in Suffolk with cats and dogs she fosters, said: “Many pets will be calling Blue Cross their home this Christmas so we are their family while they are with us. I love working at Blue Cross any day of the year but Christmas Day is especially wonderful. The cattery and kennels are all decorated and in the run-up to the big day we always get lots of presents dropped in for the animals from kind supporters. It’s a lovely way to spend Christmas Day, caring for beautiful cats, dogs and sometimes even kittens and it makes me happy to think they are all somewhere safe, warm and cared for on this special day.” Blue Cross also provides a pet bereavement support service, with support over phone or email even available on Christmas Day itself for those who are grieving the loss of a pet. For more details of the service visit: www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-bereavement-and-pet-loss This Christmas Blue Cross is seeking donations to help its teams give moments that matter to pets this Christmas. SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY We had a marvellous turnout of juniors dressed in spooky masks and outfits at our two Halloween parties. The first was at our Tuesday training session at our Needham Market Community Centre Dojo, followed by our Stowmarket Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre Dojo party at our Thursday class. Lots of fun and games and, much to the delight of the children, Nerf gun fun plus lots of sweets. The academy is actively collecting for Stowmarket Food Bank and all donations are welcome. December has us holding karate and kickboxing interclub tournaments, a children’s Christmas party and a senior’s social night out.

SPORT / CHURCH NEWS STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB After a weather-induced delay lasting a couple of weeks, we installed the winter dome on Tuesday 29 October. Much to the relief of everybody involved, we can now play right through the winter in lovely dry, wind and frost-free conditions. There’s no snow on the horizon just yet so I’m sleeping soundly for a while. Those of you familiar with playing inside the ‘bubble’ will know to add an extra layer or two as it can get rather chilly in there until fully warmed-up. New players or visitors are reminded that although the conditions inside are ideal for winter tennis, it can be a surprise when first entering to feel how low the temperature can be. Still, once we’re running around and in full flight it certainly helps keep us cool. Many thanks to the large number of club members who volunteered their time to get this fantastic facility up again for another season. All the teams, club players and social players can now look forward to guaranteed tennis for the next five months. I’m sorry to report that our club president, John Reed, passed away recently. He was instrumental in moving the club to its current site when ASDA was built, and for campaigning long and hard to get LTA support for our winter dome. John can be credited for laying the foundations for the club into its modern era and we all owe a huge debt of gratitude for his years of hard work and commitment to the club. It’s a particularly sad time for the club as his wife Jill passed away a few weeks previously. The memorial service for John was held at Buxhall Church on Saturday 9 November. CHURCH NEWS CHRISTCHURCH, NEEDHAM MARKET
NEEDHAM MARKET EVANGELICAL CHURCH
Methodist/United Reformed Church, High Street, Needham Market IP6 8AP
A hymn by BR Hanby asks the question:
Minister: The Rev Rita Carr (Methodist) 01449 612619
Who is He in yonder stall, At whose feet the shepherds fall? The chorus answers the question: ’Tis the Lord! O wondrous story! ’Tis the Lord, the King of glory! At His feet we humbly fall; Crown Him, crown Him Lord of all!
Everyone at Christchurch, Needham Market, would like to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas. However, Christmas isn’t a happy time for everyone and for many it won’t be peaceful either. Our world is in a troubled state and finding solutions to all the problems seems almost impossible. However you spend Christmas, whether with family, friends or even on your own, we hope you encounter peace, hope and joy this season. We can’t solve the world’s problems by ourselves, but there is something we can do. If we can smile and stay positive and try to see the best in people and situations, perhaps we can bring a bit of joy and happiness into our own little corner of the world. Who knows – it could spread and start an epidemic! SN We hope you can join us for some of our Christmas events. The shepherds, along with Mary and Joseph, saw the baby lying in a manger, not only as a baby, but by faith in what God had told them, they believed him to be the Lord, the King of glory, at whose feet they must humbly bow. The same God who told Mary, Joseph and the shepherds who this child was, has also told us that he will enter the world a second time one day. On that day everyone, you, me and everyone living or who has ever lived, will humbly bow before him and say ‘He is Lord.’ The only way to be ready for that coming day is to believe now, and say that Jesus is your Lord and Saviour. You may like to look up in the New Testament, Acts 1:9-11; Philippians 2:10-11 and Romans 10:9. If you do, and believe, you will have the happiest Christmas ever! HOME WORSHIP The Rev Sister Sharon Connell came to lead our Home Worship in November. She is now working as the Lead Chaplain at St Nicholas Hospice, however in the past she has done a lot of work with the Church Army, which she told us more about. Some people have said the Church Army is the Church of England’s best-kept secret. The work they do is similar to the Salvation Army and they are from the Evangelical tradition of the Church of England. They seek to work in local communities where there is the greatest need. Their specialist projects work with homeless women, teenagers who self harm, homeless teenagers, street workers and other marginalised groups. The Church Army was founded in England in 1882 by The Rev Wilson Carlile to enable ordinary Christian men and women to share their faith.
