A WORD FROM THE EDITOR We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published! Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments.

NEWS NEEDHAM LAKE VISITOR CENTRE PLANS TO BE REVEALED Exciting plans for the development of a £600,000 visitor centre/ cafe at Needham Lake are moving forward. Blueprints are being developed to create a high quality and environmentally sustainable building that will include a café and new public convenience facilities. Plans for the new building complement the rural nature of the wider Needham Lake and the new facility will create a venue that aims to boost the number of visitors to the lake each year, building the local economy and encouraging more people to enjoy a range of outdoor leisure pursuits. Councillor Jessica Flemming, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are very pleased to make public our plans for this new centre at Needham Lake and I encourage residents and local businesses to come out and have a look. One of our priorities is to enhance the facilities available for visitors and families at Needham Lake and build on the reputation that it already has – this is a great step forward.” Residents will have the chance to see the exciting plans for the visitor centre on Thursday 10 October, 4-7pm in the Burton Room at Needham Market Community Centre, School Street, Needham Market IP6 8BB.

MULTI-MILLION-POUND BOOST FOR REGION Mid Suffolk District Council’s subsidiary company Gateway 14 Ltd has completed the purchase of a key site, unlocking development plans and a potential multi-million-pound boost for the local economy. The 54-acre Stowmarket East site lies next to the A14 at junction 50 and immediately next to land bought by Gateway 14 Ltd in August 2018. The land is currently agricultural, but is earmarked for a new business and logistics park, with the potential to build more than one million square feet of logistics, warehousing, advanced manufacturing and business space. The land, opposite the Cedars Park area of the town, has outline planning permission for business and industrial development, boasting ideal transport links to the Port of Felixstowe, the Midlands and the UK motorway network beyond. The purchase of both pieces of land enables Gateway 14 Ltd to control the development of the whole site, maximising use of the land and ensuring a more ‘joined up’ development – planning and phasing activity according to market needs. Councillor Gerard Brewster, Cabinet Member for Economy and Chair of MSDC (Suffolk Holdings) Ltd said: “The development of Gateway 14 is an exciting venture that will help Mid Suffolk’s economy to thrive – creating local employment opportunities and supporting new and existing businesses. “We are ideally placed to attract major investors to our district and look forward to delivering significant benefits to our communities as a result of unlocking the potential of this site, as promised in our 5-year Vision for Prosperity action plan for Stowmarket.” Gateway 14 Ltd Chairman Chris Haworth said: “This is a very positive acquisition by Gateway 14. The combined land holding provides a unique opportunity for major occupiers seeking to locate in the region, as well as excellent facilities for local businesses seeking state of the art premises.” A shortlist of potential partners to help deliver the development has now been drawn up by Gateway 14 Ltd, with a report scheduled to go before Mid Suffolk District Council later this year. Councillors will then consider and approve the delivery model for the development.

NEWS MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILLOR REPORT: MIKE NORRIS & STEVE PHILLIPS

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE & CHARITY SHOP

Submitted on September 4

Our last two visitors have now returned home and everything suddenly seems very quiet. Unfortunately their flight was delayed and as a result they missed the train from Minsk and had to wait for the next one at 11pm. They were put on a slow train which finally reached Drogichin at 6am, where they were collected by their mother for the 45-minute drive home. All in all they were travelling for almost 24 hours! The sad thing is that it’s only a three-and-a-half hour drive home from the airport but there was no one with a car to collect them.

Draft Joint Local Plan Consultation Continues Mid Suffolk and Babergh have held nine public events discussing the draft Joint Local Plan with residents, with 11 more planned this month before the consultation ends. The draft Joint Local Plan proposes a set of planning policies that will be used to inform decisions on planning applications and appeals over the next 18 years, up to 2036. Residents can take part online, or by visiting one of 18 public consultation events planned across the two districts. Find out more on the MSDC website. (Please note the consultation ended on September 30.) Gateway 14 Expansion The Gateway 14 expansion is set to deliver a multi-million pound boost for the region. Mid Suffolk District Council’s subsidiary company Gateway 14 Ltd has completed the purchase of a key site at Stowmarket East, unlocking development plans and a potential multi-million-pound boost for the local economy. See page 3 for more. Crews bed-in to new collection routes Thank you to all residents for their patience while the transition to the new collection rounds took place. This was a huge undertaking for the waste team, as well as an essential step to make the routes more fuel efficient, ensure MSDC has the capacity to meet future home growth and to reduce the environmental impact in line with MSDC’s climate change ambitions.

On December 7 our Christmas Chocolate Bingo will take place at Needham Market Community Centre. Tickets are now on sale at £6 for adults and £4 for children under 10. Credit Card payments are now accepted for tickets purchased by phone or in the charity shop. As usual, the event will include a hot supper and desert together with our well-known enormous raffle and, of course, everything will be chocolate related and Christmas themed! Despite the previous late night we will be off to Gatwick yet again on December 8 to collect our Christmas group of six girls who will be with us until December 29. All the children will be first time travellers with no idea of what an English Christmas will be like. We are now actively recruiting host families for the 2020 visit; please don’t leave it too late to get in touch if you are interested in hosting. Regards to all and many thanks for your continued support. Link Chair Elizabeth Parker: 01449 760343

The crews are bedding into their new routes with the support of the team. NEWS / OUT & ABOUT GEARING UP FOR THE POPPY APPEAL

SUFFOLK ENERGY-FROM-WASTE

Needham Market Branch of the Royal British Legion has commenced preparations for this year’s Poppy Appeal. The record collection of £7,400 last year from our community which includes Creeting St Mary, Creeting St Peter, Baylham and Akenham will be hard to equal, as last year’s appeal was probably boosted by the publicity surrounding the Centenary of the end of the First World War.

Felixstowe Beach Clean In late August, 18 members of the Suffolk energy-from-waste facility team, along with friends and family, took part in a litter pick along Felixstowe beach and promenade. The sun was shining and the beach was busy, however the team managed to navigate the crowds and collect eight large bags of litter, equating to over 40 kilograms. The most commonly found item was cigarette butts, of which hundreds were collected.

Nationwide, last year’s Poppy Appeal raised over £40million and it all, plus more, gets spent on supporting veterans. What a generous country.

The litter pick formed part of the #suez4ocean campaign, a worldwide waste collection initiative on beaches and rivers. The campaign encourages SUEZ employees across the globe to organise beach and waterway clean-ups in their local area. To date, the campaign has mobilised over 1,800 people to collect over 65 tonnes of waste. For more information on the initiative, visit: www.suez4ocean.com.

This year we are commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the landings in Normandy in June 1944. Although there are no longer any living survivors of the First World War, many families will have relatives who served in the Second World War, some of whom may have participated in D-Day and other actions. A special lapel pin has been produced to commemorate the D-Day anniversary. We will have stocks of this pin, in addition to the usual range of poppies and wreaths. As ever, we would welcome more volunteers to assist with the Poppy Appeal; both house to house collectors and also with organising the collection and accounting for receipts. In many communities the big supermarkets have become the new social hubs and collections can be focussed there. Our area has not been ‘favoured’ by these large retail outlets and the house to house collection is still preferred by many residents. It accounts for over 30 per cent of our total raised. Unfortunately, with the passage of time, some of our long standing volunteer collectors have had to step down due to age and health. This has left some streets without a resident collector. The new housing developments have also created opportunities for additional collectors to join our happy band. If you could spare a couple of afternoons to collect among your friends and neighbours, please contact local organiser, Peter Down: 01449 721235 Although facilities provided for military casualties by the NHS are much improved, the Poppy Appeal is still very much needed. As well as providing financial, welfare and housing support for older veterans from earlier conflicts such as the Second World War, Palestine, Korea, Aden, Malaya, and Borneo, RBL also looks after younger veterans and serving military personnel and their dependents from Iraq, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. Some of these veterans are still in the twenties and thirties and will need our help for the foreseeable future. Medical science is making prodigious advances with the treatment and rehabilitation of casualties with physical wounds, especially those requiring amputation, enabling those patients to live near-normal and fulfilling lives. Among pressing challenges is the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, symptoms of which may take ten or more years to emerge, often long after the veteran has left the Armed Forces. The medical equipment and specialist nursing staff required to provide these services are expensive. This is where RBL, in conjunction with other military charities, can target its fundraising activities. You will shortly see us on the streets near you with our boxes of poppies, so please be generous.

NEEDHAM MARKET & DISTRICT FAMILY CARERS GROUP Our group meets in the Green Room at the community centre from 10.30am to 12.30pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Once a month we have a speaker or an activity and sometimes a trip out. Otherwise we meet to chat with refreshments and make plans for future meetings. In September we visited a garden centre in Woodbridge. It’s Tai Chi with Richard Napper on October 8. Richard doesn’t mind if we sit or stand as the session is designed to suit everyone’s abilities. A chat and maybe a simple craft will follow on October 22 and Izzy will join us for a spot of yoga on November 12, again a session to suit everyone. On November 26 it’s a Christmas activity and we look forward to our festive meal out on December 10 (venue to be decided). We are a very friendly group and we would love to see new carers at our meetings. We appreciate that as a carer it may be difficult for you to get away, but you don’t have to spend the whole of the two hours with us or join in the activities. Pop in for a short break and you will receive a warm welcome. If you would like to know more about the group please contact Vera: 01449 723424 / vera.cousins@btopenworld.com

OUT & ABOUT SODS – LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD Head on down to the woods this December with Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s production of the classic pantomime Little Red Riding Hood – but beware of that big bad wolf! Red Riding Hood (played by Lauren Apps) lives in the quiet village of Nether Regions with her mother Ruby and her grandmother Granny Smith. Events take an unusual turn when Red and her friends are invited to visit a museum opened by the charming Professor Lupus, who may not be all he seems. BOUNDARIES AND BOUNDARY AGREEMENTS It’s a common misapprehension that a title plan for a registered title shows the boundary of the property in question with a high degree of accuracy. Such plans are not designed to do this, though it is possible to follow a procedure whereby a boundary is determined by the Land Registry with a high degree of accuracy, but that is rare. In the main, title plans are drawn in line with the ‘General Boundaries’ rule which means that the red line show on the plan is a reasonable interpretation of where the boundary is for a particular property.

not in writing, it is obviously far more sensible for the agreement to be written down, and signed by both parties, so that it forms a clear record of the arrangement. In addition to the written terms, a plan will be essential to such an agreement. It will also be important that the plan is as accurate as possible, preferably drawn up by a professional surveyor who will be in a position to measure carefully the boundary that needs to be recorded. A clear and accurate boundary agreement is usually much more straightforward than having the boundary determined by the Land Registry under its formal procedure that I’ve mentioned above.

This also means that there could be a degree of difference between what is shown on the title plan and how this is then translated to the position on the ground. It may be appropriate, or useful, or even as a means of resolving the dispute, for neighbours to agree the position of a boundary line between two properties by using a Boundary Agreement. While, in theory, it is possible for a Boundary Agreement to be enforceable if it is

GIPPING WOMEN’S CLUB

NEEDHAM MARKET SESSIONS

We meet at Needham Market Bowls Club (Crowley Park, Barrett’s Lane, Needham Market IP6 8B) at 7.45pm on Tuesdays in term time. We are a friendly club with members from Needham Market and surrounding villages such as the Creetings. We welcome new members to all our meetings and events and you can phone beforehand or just turn up one Tuesday evening.

I am typing this the day after our September session at Needham Market Community Centre. Despite only having four performers we had a great night’s entertainment. Carys made a welcome return and not only gave us some fine songs, but actually finished writing the sequel to her single and then performed it on stage. We were also joined by two young lads from Stowmarket, James and Cameron. I always enjoy having younger players at the session; it makes a change from us old hippies!

Our autumn programme continues as follows: October 15: Harvest Festival October 29: Committee Meeting November 5: Royalty in Ipswich with Ann Day November 12: Christmas Crafts

Our next sessions are on October 17 and November 21. Come and join us; whether you perform or watch, it’s always a good night. We meet in the bar at the community centre and the music kicks off between 8 and 8.30pm depending on the acts.

For information, please call Stephanie Wiggins: 01449 723440

Come along and ask for me; my name is Bill and I may play some blues.

THE JUBILEE LADIES CHOIR We have now returned to rehearsals after our summer break. Our concert with the St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir was very much enjoyed by everyone. We must do it again! We are now preparing for our Christmas concerts, discovering new songs and going back to old favourites. It’s difficult to concentrate on Christmas with glorious weather outside, but by the time you read this it will no doubt be a lot cooler! Here are two concert dates for your diary. The first will be on Friday 6 December in Mendlesham. The second will be held on Friday 13 December at the United Reformed Church in Stowmarket. Entry to this concert will be free to encourage a wider audience to come along and hear what we have to offer. There will be a retiring collection for our nominated charity to be decided at a later date. More information about these concerts will follow. Are you thinking about joining a choir? Why not give The Ladies Jubilee Choir a try? We are a very friendly and enthusiastic group. There are no auditions and you don’t necessarily have to read music; you just need to enjoy singing. OUT & ABOUT NEEDHAM MARKET IN BLOOM

STOWMARKET CONCERT BAND

On October 7 the summer planting will give way to the winter display. The containers have continued to look good, and the geraniums at Barrett’s Lane have been stunning. We have two new volunteers, one being an expert at keeping cannas over winter, so we should be able to use those again. The red ones have been spectacular.

Stowmarket Concert Band is enjoying another great year, with a great calendar of varied events across the county. So far this year we have done formal concerts, Oompah beer nights, marches, fetes and fayres, from Oulton Broad to Thetford. These included Euston Rural Pastimes, Stowmarket Food & Drink Festival, Haughley Palmer’s Bakery 150th Anniversary, Stowmarket Carnival Procession, Bacton Fayre, Oulton Broad Bandstand, Elmswell Over 55’s Club, two consecutive Oompah nights at the excellent function suites at Greshams Ipswich and, of course, our own showcase concert and Oompah night earlier in the season. Our training band is doing amazingly well and their skills are such that we often perform ‘main band’ pieces. SCB are very grateful to our supporters for making these events successful and to our wonderful members for putting on such good shows.

We wish to thank Needham Market Over-55 Carpet Bowls Club for their recent donation. Our next fundraising event is a stall at the table top sale in the community centre on December 1. This will be followed by a quiz in March. Please support us. We welcome feedback; email us at: pamnmib@gmail.com Our next meeting is at the community centre at 10am on October 26. We welcome new members. If you would like to join us or to offer help, please contact Vera on 01449 723424 or come along to the meeting.

NEEDHAM MARKET & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY After a warm summer break, members returned refreshed for the autumn season of talks. Our speaker in September was Karen Kenny on the subjects of weeds, or as she prefers, ‘wild herbs in the wrong place’. She put a very strong argument for the place of weeds in the garden, from holding the soil in place to providing homes and food for various insects. She was hilarious, and we enjoyed the evening very much. Prof Tom Williamson will present a talk entitled Orchards – Recording, Preserving, Creating on October 3 and our annual supper will be on October 17 at Stonham Barns. The final talk of the year, on November 7, will be Rod Tibbs with Cambridge College Gardens. Our AGM will be on February 6. Our treasurer will be retiring at this meeting, so we are looking for her replacement. If anyone feels that they would be able to fill this post, please contact the secretary on 01449 720942.

A selection of forthcoming events is listed below – please come along and support us as a backdrop to a great day/night out, and as a local charity supporting musical education and events across the area. We are also getting bookings ready 2020 so if you need a band, please contact us. Saturday, October 12: Oompah Party in aid of Possibilities, Needham Market. Tickets available from: 07919 108747 (see p12) Saturday, October 19: Concert in Needham Market Parish Church. Tickets on the door. Saturday, November 9: RBL Festival of Remembrance Sunday, November 11: Remembrance Services Friday, November 23: Christmas Tree Festival Saturday, November 30: Combs Christmas Fayre Wednesday, December 4: Christmas Tree Festival Saturday, December 14: Snowfiesta & URC Christmas Concert www.stowmarketconcertband.org.uk

STOWMARKET CHORALE

The 2020 programme will be ready at the November meeting. Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the community centre. We have varied, interesting and entertaining speakers, refreshments and a bring-and-buy plant stall. We also organise coach trips and evening visits to local places of interest. If you are interested, just turn up at one of the meetings or visit: www.nmdhs.onesuffolk.net P.R.

STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Wednesday 2 October: To Relieve Need and Distress – The Story of East Anglian Almshouses by Sarah Doig Almshouses have a long and rich history, stretching back to our medieval monasteries. Sarah will chart the evolution of the almshouse, exploring the life of these institutions from the perspective of both donor and beneficiary. She will also take a look at the differing styles of architecture as well as dipping into the various rules and regulations the inhabitants had to adhere to if they were to keep their highly-prized place in the almshouse! Wednesday 6 November: A Life in Churches by Roy Tricker Roy Tricker really needs no introduction. For many years he has been a champion of Suffolk Churches, originally as a regional officer with The Churches Conservation Trust. He has written countless church guides as well as contributing to books on the subject. He was recently awarded a welldeserved B.E.M. for his work. Some of our members will recall his tour of Gipping Chapel with our group a few years ago. Tonight he talks about his passion for the county’s churches. We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall IP14 4BQ. Visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members. For more information, please contact Judy Clarke: 01449 615386

As the schoolchildren returned for a new year with exciting learning ahead of them, so too the singers of Stowmarket Chorale began their new programme of work. Under the skilled leadership of Tom Appleton and accompanist William Baldry, the choir will be coached, shaped and refined in the work of J S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, to produce a marvelous concert to entertain friends and families at Stowmarket’s United Reformed Church on Saturday 30 November. OUT & ABOUT ROTARY CLUB OF STOWMARKET GIPPING VALLEY The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley is presenting its popular third annual concert on Friday 29 November at the United Reformed Church, Ipswich Street, Stowmarket IP14 1AD with proceedings starting at 7.30pm. Proceeds are in aid of the British Heart Foundation. The concert will consist of an evening of acapella and barbershop music performed by two groups, Stellar Acappellar and The VIPS. Tickets are £10 and will be available from the British Heart Foundation shop on Ipswich Street. Although tickets will be available at the door on the night you are advised to get them prior to the event to avoid disappointment. Refreshment will be available. Guy Wiltshear, the club’s co-ordinator with Lendwithcare presented his report to the club recently. Lendwithcare specialise in helping people in developing countries who are determined to work themselves out of poverty by loaning funds in order for them to start and progress their own businesses. The organisation brings together entrepreneurs in developing countries with people with the power to help them. Run by one of the world’s leading aid and development organisations, Lendwithcare is a revolutionary way to help people in the developing world to transform their lives. Guy (photo inset) told the club that it has a total of 62 current loans outstanding. Since May, 15 loans have been repaid and 17 granted, making a net increase of two from 60 to 62. The club has the following loans with entrepreneurs in the following 11 countries: seven in Rwanda, six in Malawi, six in Cambodia, five in Palestinian Territories, six in Pakistan, four in the Philippines, six in Zambia, five in Zimbabwe, six in Ecuador, five in Vietnam and six in Peru. The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley is a member of Rotary’s District 1080 which broadly covers the whole of East Anglia and the club has recently become the number one lender from all the Rotary clubs belonging to the district. A remarkable achievement from what is a fairly small club. The Rotary Club meets every other Thursday evening at the Cedars Hotel, Stowmarket. If you want a taster of what they are about, whether you be young or old, male or female you would be very welcome. Just contact Richard Tingey for more information: richard@tingeys.co.uk

On Sunday 8 September we hosted our biggest day of the year in terms of play activity and quality. The 14 matches, ranging from U10 juniors right up to senior mixed doubles, were played in near perfect conditions. The weather was mercifully kind with a light breeze and partial sunshine across the courts. In the past we have coped with everything from persistent rain to unrelenting sunshine so it really was a lovely way to conclude the summer season.

Christians Together: 10.30am on Thursday at Christchurch (term time)

As is tradition we had the trophies presented by the town mayor before enjoying a tea provided by the members. Some new names going on the silverware again this year along with some names, still hanging-on, from years past! The next exciting piece of news is that we’re planning to install our world famous, and highly envied, winter dome around October 8. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on the forecast as we can’t inflate the membrane in anything above a light breeze. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan and the autumn/winter tennis can get started in the comfort of calm, dry and frost free courts.

Everybody is welcome at all our services.

By the time this issue plops onto your doormat we will have winners from the final Grand Slam event of the year, the U.S. Open. Serena Williams has utterly destroyed her last two opponents in well under an hour so the smart money must be on her at the moment, but you never know, there’s always room for a surprise! The men’s title is a little more difficult to predict as Federer has been beaten and Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury, which just leaves Rafael Nadal as the last of the big three. With some new talent getting ever-closer, I expect we may have seen the turning of the tide and that dominant trio may be on the way down. There’s lots to do at the club with two morning club sessions, two club evenings and several sessions for both juniors and adults to get started. If you’d like more information, just send me a line. See you on court. Senior Club Coach Chris Cunningham chris@chriscoaching.plus.com

A Thought for the Month

One of my favourite parts of October is driving along the tree lined A14 and seeing the leaves change, a beautiful array of colours, especially in the glow of the late autumn sunlight. As the leaves fall they then give children and dogs, amongst others, the fun of creating and diving into piles of collected leaves. For adults, there’s the opportunity to do some ‘kicking the leaves’.

We heard this morning (6 September) that President Mugabe of Zimbabwe has died. By some he is evidently thought of as a man who started his presidency as a hero and turned into a horror. Whatever the case, he has gone to give an account of his stewardship to his Maker, and we may wonder how he will fare. A more relevant question for each of us is how shall we fare when it is our turn?

In the month that Halloween is celebrated and the clocks go back, isn’t it good to remember that light always overcomes darkness? Even one tiny candle makes a difference in the dark. In Christchurch this October we will be remembering that there is a light that never goes out – the Light of the World. We will be celebrating His coming into the world just a few weeks later.

Peter Kinley October Missionary Meeting: Tuesday 22 October, 7.30pm, when we look forward to a return visit from Clive Langston of the Slavic Gospel Association. REGULAR MEETINGS Sunday Services: 10.30am and 6.30pm

With all the uncertainties and concerns we have about what happens after October 31, there will still be light in the darkness. I like Lauren Daigle’s song Light of the World. You can check the whole song out on YouTube. Here is the first verse and chorus:

Bible Study and Prayer Meeting: Tuesdays at 7.30pm

The world waits for a miracle The heart longs for a little bit of hope Oh come, oh come, Emmanuel A child prays for peace on earth And she’s calling out from a sea of hurt Oh come, oh come, Emmanuel.

HOME WORSHIP On Monday 2 September Helen Grimbly came to tell us about Christians in other countries who suffer for their faith. She personally found out about the work of Release International from the previous church she attended in Islington, London. They are a voice for the persecuted church throughout the world. Inspired by the testimony and ministry of Pastor Richard Wumbrand, Release International was founded in 1968. Helen showed a film about Richard who was a pastor in communist Romania in about 1948. He preached the gospel to other Romanians and Russians who were occupying the state at that time, but was taken in the night by the secret police. He was imprisoned in solitary confinement for 14 years and three months. He was given neither paper nor pen, and in fact forgot how to write. Shortly after he was released, he said that even though there was great suffering, he and his fellow prisoners experienced the company of Jesus and the angels, and miraculously through grace were filled with love even for those that tortured them. During times when the prisoners were separated, they were still able to knock the Morse code on the walls, and fellow prisoners heard the gospel and became Christians. Some of the torturers also gave their lives to Christ. To watch the film about Richard go to: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7jUEcXkCHw
