A WORD FROM THE EDITOR There’s an elderly gent I see almost every day walking very, very slowly from the local supermarket carrying the same small plastic bag. I say ‘gent’ because he’s always ‘properly’ dressed in a suit and tie. I like to think he would have worn a hat in his younger days. I wish he still did.
NEWS OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT EMMA GRAHAM’S STUDIO
His clothes may have seen better days, but there’s a curious dignity about him. He doesn’t appear to make any effort to engage with others, barely lifting his gaze from the path as he proceeds. Nobody stops to speak to him and, despite my curiosity, neither have I. I’ve smiled and mumbled good morning on one or two occasions, but he has never responded. It may be that he didn’t hear me, but it seems more deliberate than that, as if he’s either totally focused on the task in hand or is holding the world at arm’s length for some reason. If this is the case, and my instinct tells me it is, I respect his right to privacy. However, I have created a whole lifestory for him. I think of him as Robert. His wife Celia died several years ago and since then he has been brokenhearted and alone, locking out the world because the pain of her loss is his most precious possession. Celia is with him in everything he does, walking by his side each morning and straightening his tie before he leaves the house. I worry about him too. If I don’t see him for a day or two, I start to panic. I have no idea where he lives or if he has anyone to look out for him. Thankfully he always turns up, but one day he won’t and he’ll never know how much I miss seeing him.
Once again in the run up to Christmas, Emma Graham will be opening her studio to visitors. This is a great opportunity to see behind the scenes and to view current work, sketchbooks and folio. Work will be available to purchase, from greetings cards to original art, limited edition prints and gifts. There will be a wide range of work to view and buy, making ideal and unique Christmas gifts, many on special offer. Meet Emma, chat about art, publishing and more; you’ll receive a warm welcome plus tea, coffee and mince pies.
Isn’t it odd how strangers find their way into our hearts! Of course, many of us admire, even love movie stars, musicians and football players and look up to people we respect for one reason or another. We are often inspired by the actions of someone we may never meet, Greta Thunberg being a perfect example. It’s important, especially for children, to have role models but I don’t think we have to look very far to find them. Every older person is just someone who was born before us, done most things before us in fact. Everyone has a story. All we have to do is stop to listen. I’m going to make one more attempt with Robert. Perhaps you can find someone who deserves a moment of your time.

Emma’s studio will be open from 11am-4pm on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November. If you can’t make those dates, but want to visit and look for a unique gift, contact Emma who is happy to open by arrangement. 10% from open studio sales will go to The Children’s Appeal at Ipswich Hospital, for which Emma is the commissioned illustrator. The Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity launched a fundraising appeal in February 2018 to raise part of the £2.5m needed to build a new-look children’s department to transform the experience of its young patients and their families. The Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity is now appealing for local businesses and individuals to give the appeal their backing by helping raise vital funds towards the total cost of the project, which would take place in phases over the next two to three years. You could make a difference. Every penny you donate to the appeal will help them develop the children’s department at Ipswich Hospital for their younger patients both now and in the future. So do come along and help Emma make a donation to this wonderful charity. Alternatively you can make a one-off donation, set up a direct debit or send a donation by cheque (payable to The Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity – Children’s Appeal) to The Colchester & Ipswich Hospital Charity, Post Box No 49, Heath Road, Ipswich IP4 5PD, or contact them for other options if you’d prefer to bring in cash raised through your fundraising: 0300 770 1369 / charity@esneft.nhs.uk Emma’s studio is at 48 Great Harlings, Shotley Gate, Ipswich IP9 1NY www.egrahamillustrations.co.uk Instagram emma_graham_illustrations Twitter @bluebutterfly48

LOCAL HAIR SALON EXPANDS
Save the Date!
Damien Nurse, owner of Salon By The Bridge, established his business at Suffolk Food Hall seven months ago. The highly skilled hair stylist previously owned the large Ipswich town centre salon, Distraxion.
Our fundraising coffee morning on Saturday 7 December will have Christmas treats to buy as well as the usual tea, coffee and homemade cake for £5 per person. Guest artists and Christmas crafts such as seasonal table arrangements and jewellery will get your festive season off to a merry start! We are so grateful to Mandy and Dougie at the Red Lion in Chelmondiston for their ongoing support as they don’t charge us to hold the event and consequently every penny collected is a contribution to pier funds. It’s a great opportunity to showcase local artists, and also for a catch up with pier news. The ambience of this Michelin-listed restaurant is so relaxing and enjoyable. The next coffee morning dates are Wednesday 6 November, Saturday 7 December, and the first of the 2020 coffee mornings on Wednesday 8 January.
SPORTING MEMORIES GROUPS COME TO BABERGH

BOAST ABOUT THE GARDEN SECURES BALI DESIGN AWARD Boast About the Garden on Shotley Peninsula have been designing and building gardens for nearly 20 years, achieving a strong reputation for quality and offering a highly professional service.
A new lottery funded project has launched in Babergh, bringing together older residents over their shared sporting memories.
After winning the Suffolk Show garden design competition in 2017, they are now celebrating again having won a garden design award for excellence at this year’s prestigious BALI design awards competition.
A range of partner organisations, volunteers and sports fans all came together in Sudbury Town Hall on Thursday 26 September to launch the new project, which will see Sporting Memory Groups meet in Glemsford, Lavenham, Long Melford and Sudbury. For details of when and where each session is to take place visit: www.sportingmemoriesnetwork.com/suffolk-clubs Funded by the National Lottery and Babergh District Council, the project is driven by positive and committed volunteers who love talking sport and supporting people in their area. Anyone interested in joining these volunteers should contact Phil: phil@sportingmemoriesnetwork.com These sessions will be open to all over 50s and are free of charge. The volunteer-led sessions help individuals explore and rekindle those favourite memories, including those living with dementia, depression or loneliness who connect with others via cherished sporting memories. Councillor Derek Davis, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Sport brings us all together and recalling memories is great for body and soul, whether over a pint or a cup of tea with friends or as an icebreaker for friends to be. We’ve seen some really wonderful projects fight rural isolation in Babergh, from the Rural Coffee Caravan to Together Tuesdays, and I’m delighted to welcome Sporting Memories to the area. We all have great sporting moments indelibly carved into our memories and using these to connect people is an outstanding idea that I am certain will create new groups and new friendships throughout our district.” Pictured left to right are Philip Lown – Partnership Programme Manager at Suffolk County Council, Councillor Adrian Osborne – Vice Chairman of Babergh District Council, Councillor Jack Owen – Deputy Mayor of Sudbury, Councillor Derek Davis – Babergh Cabinet Member for Communities.

The winning project, to create an outdoor seating area with a custom-built covered kitchen and bar area, was one of the toughest they have ever completed due to some very challenging access issues within a small space and a very complex design. However, it all came together perfectly with high praise from the clients, Rachel and Jeremy from Ipswich, who are delighted with everything and commented: “You have given us an amazing space and we love it.” Robert Boast, owner and designer of the project, explained that he and his team were really proud to receive the award and felt it was great recognition for the project, but also for their continuous desire to exceed expectations and create unique and attractive outdoor spaces and gardens to really change people’s lives. He said: “We love what we do, and to get an award within such a prestigious competition is a great feeling and just makes us even more determined to keep improving and working hard to help people enjoy their gardens and outdoor spaces and create great experiences for all our clients.” If you would like to contact them about a project they can be found at: www.boastaboutthegarden.co.uk.

NEWS GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEMES A HELPING HAND WHEN NEEDED The Shotley Peninsula Good Neighbour Schemes are an important support network in our villages. They are run by volunteers under the umbrella of Community Action Suffolk. They can be contacted for assistance over a range of activities, including shopping, pet care, trips to hospitals and surgeries and collecting prescriptions. We are supported by parish councils and voluntary donations. All volunteers have been DBS and reference checked and are simply people in the community who don’t mind being asked for a helping hand. The contact phone is held by a rota of volunteers who ask volunteers in turn if they are free to help with a particular task. It is for all to use – all of us at some point are glad to be able to call on a neighbour for help. HOLBROOK & SHOTLEY SURGERY GP & Staff Training Afternoons Our next training afternoons are Wednesday 6 November and 11 December. The practice will be open for patients to come in to collect or drop off prescriptions and book appointments or make enquiries at reception. However, there will be no clinical staff on site and our telephone lines will be switched over to the out of hours’ service. Please ring 111 for advice if your query cannot wait until the following day. In an emergency, dial 999. Home Visits We now have a paramedic, Kate Whiting, working with us on Mondays and Fridays who will cover the majority of our home visits on these days. Please ensure that if you need a home visit, you contact the practice before 10am where possible. This will allow us to plan the workload more efficiently. We have a large and very geographically spread area and need to use our resources effectively. Patients of Dr Midforth If your registered GP was previously Dr Midforth, we will write to advise you of your new registered GP. This is a complex issue and we allocate so each GP has a fair proportion in relation to the number of sessions they work. Unfortunately, we cannot take patient requests for this, but you remain able to see any GP at either of our sites. Practice Manager Julia Smith
BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR MARY MCLAREN – STOUR WARD The month of November always signifies Remembrance in our national calendar. As an ex-service wife, I am committed to the importance we place on remembering those who sacrificed their lives for this country. We also remember those whose sacrifice did not end on the battlefield, but continues with them on a daily basis in physical and mental disablement and posttraumatic stress disorder. We are very fortunate to have an active branch of the Royal British Legion in Holbrook, who again will be out this month collecting our money and reminding us of our debt to the men and women who fought for our freedom and our democracy. Please support their work. We may have other military charities in Stour Ward – please let me know where you are. Babergh District Council has a housing policy for ex-service personnel who may find themselves homeless or rough sleeping. Please visit: www.babergh.gov.uk/housing/homeless-advice World Mental Health Day was held on October 10 and Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils were supporting events in Stowmarket and Sudbury on behalf of the voluntary and statutory partnerships across Suffolk. Suicide prevention was the global theme as every 40 seconds someone takes their own life. In our village communities it’s crucial for us to recognise mental health problems within our families, friends, neighbours and those we don’t know very well. If someone needs help, we need to support them and seek expert advice from those who can advise and direct us and them to the most appropriate services. www.suffolkvasp.co.uk Remembering a very special event like the arrival of a new born baby is among the new plans proposed by Babergh District Council as it commits to enhancing and protecting biodiversity and combating climate change. The introduction of a Tree for Life scheme where parents in the district will be offered a free tree to celebrate the arrival of a new child is good news for us all and our environment. Unfortunately we have no start date as yet. The Joint District Draft Plan is now being worked on by BDC Planning Team as a result of all the comments they have received from our parishes and residents. They have promised to keep us updated as they progress and process the information. Mary.Mclaren@babergh.gov.uk

NEWS SHOTLEY PARISH COUNCIL It has only been five months since five new councillors were elected onto our council, with four being re-elected. Our members have now settled into their roles and have been extremely busy listening to their electorate and carrying out previously established mandates, as well as new ones. This is what we have been up to so far: 1. Secured UKPN’s Shotley Cliff Survey (restricted use) and funding of £15,000 towards the provision of new play equipment 2. Formed Play Areas and Neighbourhood Development Plan Working Groups. 3. Granted the funding secured form Coastal Partnership East of £2,500 to Shotley Peninsula Shoreline CIC for revenue expenditure costs (in addition to £50 per month for materials for basic repairs/ maintenance works). 4. Thoroughly cleaned the tennis courts in Lloyd Road and repaired the broken equipment. 5. Provided additional litter bin and ordered repairs for the damaged grit bin on Bristol Hill. 6. Submitted comments to the consultation on the emerging BDC Local Plan, taking into account the shortfall in a Green Spaces Strategy and re-iterating the request to add land adjacent to Chapel Fields for the provision of more affordable housing. 7. Stepped in to maintain the footpath between the Shotley Primary School and East View Terrace, as well as other areas, due to SCC budget cuts. 8. Joined the SCC Self-Help Scheme in order to carry out even more highways related functions (sign cleaning, verge maintenance, etc) 9. Renewed the Service Level Agreement with the Community Payback Team (Sodexo) in order to secure help with the maintenance of the Heritage Park, the allotments, and now also the church grounds. 10. Approved the installation of a Speed Indicator Device (SID) on The Street, which will hopefully act as a deterrent to speeding vehicles, as well as collect important data for future reference and action. 11. Continued pursuing the installation of an electric vehicle charging point in the village. 12. Successfully completed both the internal and external audits for the year ended 31 March 2019. 13. Carried out another rewarding Beach Clean event. 14. Approved the provision of life saving equipment in Shotley Gate. 15. Approved the expenditure for the provision of three Christmas Trees, as in previous years, for the village hall, Bristol Hill and near the church. 16. In line with GDPR compliance, purchased a parish council domain and created uniformed email accounts for all our members. Even in times of extreme budget cuts, Shotley Parish Council appreciates that our funding provides local groups and organisations with much valued support. Here is a list of the successful funding bids so far: Shotley Primary School: £200 Chelmondiston Waste Disposal Facility: £750 Shotley Rose Bowling Club: £500 Shotley Explorer Guide; £400 Shotley Peninsula Shoreline CIC: £1,098.45 Total to date: £2,948.45 We would like to take this opportunity to thank the councillors who stepped down at the end of their term in May 2019, some of whpm had served this parish for many, many years. We wish them the best with their future projects.

NEWS / out & about
GILBERT AND SULLIVAN AT HARKSTEAD Wet and windy was October, will there be frost in November? Whatever the weather there is always something to do in SOS. The Bristol Arms hosted the Walkers are Welcome Alliance meeting in September which was led by Suffolk County Council’s Green Access Team. It was a great opportunity to share our experiences as a WaW village with the other accredited Suffolk towns, Clare and Eye. Hopefully we will soon be joined by two or three other Suffolk locations. We were pleased to have the National Committee Director and Membership Secretary Ken Hawkins with us to explain some of the inner workings of ‘National HQ’. The links continue with the Ramblers Association as we are stronger pulling together with other organisations who have similar goals. With all of the housing developments taking place on the peninsula (and throughout the county), there will be a significant increase in the number of people accessing sensitive areas – salt marshes, mudflats, beaches – which means increased disturbance to flora and fauna. To help come up with ways of helping to look after these precious areas, a Recreational Access Mitigation Strategy (RAMS) is being developed for Suffolk, building on some excellent work already underway in Essex and other parts of the UK. The first strategy working group meeting is early December and SOS is pleased to be joining the group to help. Working alongside the Environment Agency, Forestry England, Natural England, Harwich Haven Authority, Suffolk County Council (AONB, Rights of Way and Ecology teams), Suffolk Yacht Harbour, The Deben Estuary Partnership, RSPB and Suffolk Wildlife Trust we will help develop, communicate and implement various means to protect and preserve our links with nature. More on this as it develops through the next year. Our next short Health Walk is on Wednesday 20 November, starting from the Bristol Arms at 11.30am. The December walk is from the Shotley Rose/Village Hall on Wednesday 18 December, again at 11.30am. Both walks take about and hour and a half at a very gentle pace. Please join us for a stroll around our lovely village whatever the weather. Wall calendars are still avaiIable from the usual local outlets, SOS committee members, or Marian Pugh at: marian.pugh@btinternet.com. At seven pounds each they make a fabulous Christmas present for family and friends. Finally, we hope to have some fantastic news in December on the portable defibrillator that we mentioned last month, thanks to excellent work by our group secretary, Geraint Pugh. Thanks for your continued support. If you want information about the work of Shotley Open Spaces visit www.shotleyopenspaces.co.uk or contact Geraint Pugh (g.pugh1@btinternet.com), Gary Richens (gary.richens.583@ btinternet.com) or Tony Lawford-Randall (keyworker@hotmail.co.uk). SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM During the summer we experienced the theft of several cars that use keyless entry. Criminals are arming themselves with equipment which can receive the radio frequency emitted by the fob and send it to a second unit close to the car. This second unit then emits the same signal, fooling the car into believing the fob owner is within range, opening the doors and allowing the vehicle to be driven away without any need for a key or the original fob. Please visit our website for information to help prevent these crimes. Operation Sceptre, the national week of action against knife crime, took place between 16 and 23 September. The operation highlights the risks that carrying a bladed weapon can bring, as well as targeting offenders who use and carry knives. Officers recently undertook patrols and executed drug warrants at six Suffolk addresses. One of these resulted in £25,000 cash being seized. Eight people were arrested in connection with knife crime offences. Since March 2019 when the bins were last emptied, 1,427 items have been deposited in the amnesty bins. The Bin a Blade campaign was launched in Suffolk in 2011 and since then 24,283 bladed items have been deposited and destroyed. You can report a number of non-urgent crimes online via: www.suffolk.police.uk/contact-us You can also call the police on 101 to report crimes and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. In an emergency, always call 999. Keep safe and look after each other. Kindest regards, PC Sarah George and PC Diane Porter

The story is that after being knocked out during a strange blackout, pub singer Jack (Himesh Patel) wakes up in a world where The Beatles never existed. He reconstructs their songs from memory and is soon a major star in the entertainment scene. Can he live with the lie? Will his relationship with Ellie (Lily James) survive? Heck, I don’t know, but you will once you see the movie. We all know some of The Beatles songs, if not every verse, then pieces of them. Will you sit there humming the tunes or stumbling over the words and remembering them differently? Heck, I don’t know that either, but I’m looking forward to a great evening. I’d like to say The Beatles were a part of my childhood, but I was married with two kids when I first heard John Lennon and Paul McCartney oooooooing into the microphone. We’re offering a free chocolate ice cream to anyone in the audience whose first name is genuinely ‘Jude’, but we’ll need identification to prove it. ‘Hey Nigel’ won’t work for us, I’m afraid. See you all at the Thursday pics.

CHELMONDISTON WI Our last two meetings have been quite energetic, for us! In September we welcomed Amanda Haskell who shared her expertise in exercising while seated. What fun we had! A short video of the ladies in full swing is available on our Facebook page. It’s surprising how all abilities were able to join in that evening, and some now attend Amanda’s session on Tuesday afternoons.

EAST SUFFOLK NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION If you are a member of, or a volunteer for, the National Trust, we invite you to get more out of your membership by joining our association where a warm welcome awaits you. On Tuesday 19 November, Peter Lawrence will entertain us with a talk on timber framed buildings in Suffolk and Essex. We regularly walk past these old buildings without knowing too much about their construction and history. Peter’s talk will help fill a few gaps in our knowledge. There’s no meeting in December; we meet again on 21 January. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre IP5 1JF at 7.15pm. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome; the entrance fee is £3. National Trust members and volunteers can join us for £8 per year (£12 per couple at same address). We publish three newsletters a year for members and enjoy interesting day outings and other events. In October we were entertained by Michael Garland of The Suffolk Morris Men. He told us the history of the Morris, starting way back in the 1400s and up to present day. He did a jig or two (just watching tired me out) and explained that Morris dancing was not actually a keep-fit regime, but you definitely did need to be fit to do it. The ladies declined his offer to join in. It was a watching and listening exercise for us followed by the usual tea and cake. November is our AGM meeting which has to be organised by the committee. A beetle drive will also be included in our evening’s entertainment.

On Wednesday 9 October, Jenny Gibbs presented An Englishwoman’s Life in Rural Turkey. Her stories capture a simple, serene, pastoral way of life in a Turkish mountain village unchanged for centuries. On November 13 Magistrate Graham Higgins will talk of Tales From The Bench. He will look at our legal heritage, particularly the part played by Suffolk. He will relate how the role of magistrates and local events have played a part in this history and will bring us up to date with an opportunity to decide how a defendant should be sentenced by briefly outlining a case. He will also include some of his unusual experiences on the bench. We meet at Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership is £12 which entitles members to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. We don’t hold a speaker meeting in December but instead enjoy a Christmas lunch which this year is on Wednesday 11 December at the Ipswich Best Western Hotel, Copdock IP8 3JD. This is always a very popular event so an early reservation is advised. On January 8 Chris Parfitt, a retired teacher, will enlighten us on The Mysteries of Easter Island in an illustrated talk in which he will look at life on this remote island and explore its unique history. Each month The Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD from 10am to noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 29 November.
ORWELL DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY Our talks cover a broad spectrum of art and are delivered within a relaxed and welcoming environment. On October 2 we were pleased to welcome back Louise Scholfield who gave a fascinating and often intriguing talk about her archaeological adventures in Albania. OUT & ABOUT HOLBROOK GUIDES HAVE FUN EVENING AT LOCAL HAIR SALON Holbrook Guides recently enjoyed a hair styling evening at Salon By the Bridge at Suffolk Food Hall. Stylist Caroline Powell shared her top tips for healthy hair with the girls and gave them her thoughts on the best way to wash hair and sort out tangles. The Guides experimented with easy to do hair styles and ‘up-do’s’ and had the opportunity to use straighteners to curl and style their hair. Georgie, one of the Guides said: “I really enjoyed spending the evening at the salon and learning new techniques. It was great fun.” Guide Leader Leanne Castle said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to gain first-hand experience and tuition from professional hair stylists. We greatly appreciate Caroline giving up her time, and salon owner Damian Nurse for being on hand to share his expertise too.” 1st Holbrook Guides meet weekly during term time and try out numerous activities. During the coming weeks they will work with a potter, swim, make natural shower products and set up a pop-up candle stall at various village Christmas fairs. For more details regarding Guiding visit: www.girlguiding.org.uk
STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB Andy Malcolm will talk about the good work undertaken by The Fishermen’s Mission on November 6 and on November 20 Sara Waterston of local Hunnable Funeral Directors will talk on The Humourist Side of Funerals. Our speaker on December 4 is Simon Gallop with The Unknown Constable Country and we end the year with our popular annual Christmas quiz. It’s rumoured that there are some valuable prizes to be won on this occasion! We will not meet on January 1 so our first meeting in the New Year will be on Wednesday 15 January when fellow member Michael Hole will present a talk entitled First and Second World War Prisoner of War Camps. Our club endeavours to be simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members at minimal cost. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other and the opportunity for development of acquaintances. New members are welcomed. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree CO11 1EB, 10 for 10.30am. For further details please contact speaker secretary Dave Carman: 01255 880202

SHOTLEY PENINSULA BRANCH We meet on Wednesday 6 November when we will have an opportunity to make a Christmas flower arrangement under the guidance of Mrs Jo Lee. I am sure this will be fun – all materials provided. We meet at 2pm in St Andrew’s Church Room and a warm welcome extended to all visitors. Please bring your neighbour or a friend, or both! We begin with a hymn and prayers and after the flower arranging, refreshments will be available. Wednesday 4 December is our Advent Carol Service led by Andrew Coulson at 2pm in church. This year we invite you to share in a Christmas Soup and Pud lunch provided at 12.30pm in the Church Room. SHOTLEY GARDENING CLUB For our first talk of our new season we met a new speaker. Michael Warren has a long history of involvement in gardening and plants, with a particular interest in plant photography. His wide ranging talk on Creepers, Crawlers and Climbers was amply illustrated with his truly lovely photographs of plants and flowers and one or two of the unlovely creatures that creep, crawl and climb where we gardeners would rather they didn’t. Our next meeting is on Monday 11 November and we will be meeting an old friend, Matthew Tanton-Brown, who will give us one of his surprise talks based around the season and the plants available. We meet every second Monday (unless otherwise indicated in the programme) at 7.30pm in the large committee room at Shotley Village Hall. June Edwards SHOTLEY GARDENING CLUB PROGRAMME 2019-20 Guests are welcome to come along to any of the talks. Contact Karen (787731) or June (787422) for further details. OUT & ABOUT
CHELMONDISTON HORTICULTURE SOCIETY In September, Simon Leatherdale from the Forestry Commission gave a very interesting talk about ancient woodlands. Simon, who lives in Harkstead, owns a patch of ancient woodland in Essex. Ancient woodland is woods that have been around continuously since 1600. One indicator of ancient woodland is the presence of bluebells. On a show of hands it was decided to go to the Red Lion for our Christmas meal. Please let Linda know if you wish to go. Our meetings are held in the village hall on the last Tuesday of the month, and guests are most welcome for a small charge. We would be very grateful for any raffle prizes you could donate.
THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO STAY IN YOUR SLIPPERS Local older person’s charity, Age UK Suffolk, is calling for people across the county to don their slippers or pyjamas for the day, anytime between October-November, and help to raise funds to support services for the older people of Suffolk. Slip Into Slippers has become an annual fixture in the charity’s fundraising calendar and is a simple way of pledging support to the vital work that the organisation carries out, tackling loneliness and social isolation both now, and for older people in the future. Supported by Ipswich Building Society, Slip Into Slippers is essentially a ‘themed dress down day’ with a difference – encouraging people to simply donate £1 in their workplace, school, social group, or even at home as an incentive to don their comfiest clothes for the day. Jo Reeder, Head of Fundraising & Marketing for Age UK Suffolk, said: “We understand the demands on organisations to support charities, and wanted to create a campaign that was easy to take part in, and could be tailored to the individual, workplace or school. Slip Into Slippers is a fun, simple and rewarding way of supporting a local charity and raising awareness of the needs and challenges of older people.” While Slip Into Slippers is a fun event to take part in, the charity recognises that there can also be health and safety implications to people wearing their slippers for the day, and would urge people to check with their workplace or school to ensure that there are no additional risks in doing so. If your school, business, community group or household would like to take part in this year’s Slip Into Slippers campaign, contact the fundraising team at fundraising@ageuksuffolk.org / 01473 298688 or visit: www.ageuksuffolk.org
SUFFOLK DOG IS THE STAR OF a NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK A new children’s book has been written about a dog from Suffolk. Based on a true story that was featured in Country Life magazine, Julia Adlard was inspired to write and illustrate Domino the Miracle Dog. After reading that a terrier had become stuck in a rabbit hole under a tree in Suffolk, the story resonated with Julia. She had a similar experience with her own pet when she was a child. Julia Adlard, who trained with Raymond Briggs in illustration, brings this exciting story to life through her imaginative watercolour style. Domino the Miracle Dog is available from The Aldeburgh Book Shop or from Amazon.

NEW PERFORMERS ANNOUNCED FOR SHOW IN AID OF EACH Stephen K. Amos, Katy Brand and Andy Parsons have been added to the allstar lineup set to perform at Happy Christmas Ipswich, the comedy evening being organised by Griff Rhys Jones to raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). Also added to the bill are the cast of BBC radio comedy programme Radio Active as well as the spoof country and western band that features Rory McGrath, Death By Country. Lee Mack, Al Murray and Jess Robinson were the first of Griff’s friends confirmed for the event at Ipswich’s Regent Theatre on Tuesday 3 December. He hopes to add more big names from the world of comedy soon. The evening will end with a special musical moment, led by a singer to be announced in the coming weeks. Griff is a keen supporter of EACH, having visited The Treehouse, its hospice in Ipswich, and even hosted a special visit to his home for a 12-year-old boy and his family who receive care and support from the charity. Previously, he has said: “The Treehouse is a hospice, but it’s really about living and helping people to get the most out of life. It does remarkable, inspired and very difficult work to help families through circumstances that might affect any of us at any time. I was so impressed by the people I met, so amazed by the detail and compassion I found there. It’s a good place, it provides a vital service, but it can only do this with our continued and continuous support.” For that reason, Griff has done solo comedy performances for EACH in each of the last two years. He hopes asking his peers to join him this year will bring in even more cash. Becky Redbond, EACH Events Fundraising Manager, said: “This is truly a star billing, with those who come along assured a unique evening of hilarious laughs. I’m delighted to say that Just Recruitment has agreed to sponsor the event, meaning every penny raised will go directly towards continuing care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions, and support for their families. Other sponsorship opportunities exist, so please get in touch if you may be interested.” Tickets are available from: www.ipswichtheatres.co.uk / 01473 433100 Those on general sale will be priced from £32.50. There will be a limited number of ‘best seats in the house’ available for £100 and an even more limited number of VIP meet and greet tickets for £250. Holders of those will receive champagne after the show and a goody bag to take home after mingling with the stars. on the grapevine / schools THE BIG SUFFOLK QUIZ FOR BBC CHILDREN IN NEED FOOD DRIVE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED URGENTLY FareShare East Anglia needs volunteers to help collect donations for local charities as part of the Tesco Food Collection between Thursday 21 to Saturday 23 November. Based in Ipswich, FareShare East Anglia redistributes good quality surplus food to over 100 charities, including holiday hunger schemes, homeless hostels, refuges, family centres and hospices. During the cold winter months, charities often struggle to keep up with the increased demand on their services, so volunteers are needed to encourage shoppers to donate store cupboard staples such as pasta, rice, tinned fish and tea. FareShare will then redistribute these – along with the surplus meat, dairy, fruit and veg that it receives from the food industry – to charities and community groups in the region. In partnership with FareShare and foodbank charity The Trussell Trust, the Tesco Food Collection is the UK’s biggest food drive. Last year the public donated enough food to provide 3.6 million meals for vulnerable people across the UK. FareShare Manager Mike Barrett said: “Taking part in the Tesco Food Collection is a quick and easy way to make a big impact, and it can be a lot of fun too. We’re calling on everyone from right across East Anglia to give just three hours to help us fight hunger – just a morning or afternoon – but in that short time, just 180 minutes, you can collect enough donations to make up 600 meals for local people who really need your help.” Volunteers can sign up at: www.fareshare.org.uk/tescofoodcollection
One of the biggest trivia events the region has ever seen is being organised to raise money for this year’s BBC Children in Need appeal. The Hearing Care Centre has been organising charity quiz nights twice a year since 2010 and is this time joining forces with BBC Radio Suffolk to make this event bigger and better than ever. The Big Suffolk Quiz night will be held on Sunday 10 November at the wonderful events space at Trinity Park with a 7pm start. Teams can include between four to six members and entry is £5. A bumper attendance of more than 400 people is expected for the event. Thanks to generous support from local businesses, there are lots of cash prizes to be won and additional prizes can also be won in a giant prize draw. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, said: “The quizzes we hold every year are a real highlight for us and such a great evening. This year we wanted to do something different and make the event bigger than ever. We are so excited for BBC Radio Suffolk and Trinity Park to be involved and we feel so grateful to have their support.” BBC Radio Suffolk Breakfast Show presenter Mark Murphy who will help co-host the event, said: “Pull your friends and family together, round up a group of your colleagues at work or even come along with a local group or organisation that you are a member of. We really need your support to help raise money for this fantastic cause!” Tickets are expected to sell out fast so organisers are advising interested teams to book early to avoid disappointment. 01473 230330 / www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/quiz
HOLBROOK PRIMARY SCHOOL I can’t believe we’ve only been in school a few weeks and I have so many exciting events to share. Pupil Voice Congratulations to our new school councillors who began the term by sharing their manifestos and gained enough votes to take on this all important role for the year. They have now been tasked with deciding on a charity to support throughout the year. They are all very committed to saving our planet and are keen to continue with our school commitment to creating a more eco-friendly environment at school. Just two of the initiatives that are already helping us to be a greener school are our crisp packet and battery recycling stations. Our new Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) met with Martin Andrews from Suffolk County Council and were given information packs. They are buzzing with ideas and will shortly be sending out a parent survey to find out about their experiences of road safety outside the school. At the end of October, they would like to have a ‘Be Bright Be Seen’ day in preparation for the clocks going back on October 27. Our Food for Life action group served some delicious ‘Caterlink’ cakes to prospective parents and all of them spoke knowledgably about the healthy ingredients that have been used in their preparation and shared some of the fantastic learning experiences they have had this term. School Tour for Prospective Parents Another tour for parents of children who will be at school age in September 2020 is available between 6 and 7pm on November 7. Please contact our school office to book a place. Year 3 Author Visit Year 3 were fortunate to receive a visit from local author Rachel Jackson earlier in the term. She shared and discussed her book My Brother Has a Thing, which is aimed at helping children to understand the challenges and joys of living with someone with autism. Many thanks to Rachel, Mrs Johns and Mrs Terry for this opportunity for Holbrook pupils to develop as readers with enquiring and inquisitive minds.

Year 5 and 6 Imperial War Museum Visit Following their First World War recruitment afternoons, Mr Reynolds and Mrs Rennison continued to bring their topic to life with a visit to the Imperial War Museum in London. The children were inspired to find out even more about the lives of everyday people like Bertie Wombwell during this important period from recent history. As always, our pupils were perfectly behaved and all the adults who went along thoroughly enjoyed their company. Humanities lessons and poetry writing in English will build on the amazing learning experiences gained during this trip. Alton Water Walk The Alton Water Walk is a Holbrook tradition which gets the whole school out and about in the outstanding natural area just beyond the school gates. It was fantastic to have so many adults helping us to supervise and encourage the children. A huge well done to all the children for engaging with leaf collecting, den building and wildlife watching, and special congratulations to Year 6 for completing the whole of the 11km route! The ice creams in the cafe were well deserved and the sponsor money will be a much needed additional source of funding for the school. Off By Heart Poetry Competition For this school-wide competition, the children were asked to learn a poem of their own choice or one chosen from a suggested list. Afternoons were spent with each child, including our very youngest pupils, reciting a favourite poem with their classmates as a budding audience. Teachers encouraged the children to perform their poems by using actions, good intonation and effective facial expressions. Following this exciting work, each year group chose a winning performance to go through to the final. In a very special whole school assembly on National Poetry Day, our finalists were introduced by myself and each of them had a go at performing a poem without the words. This initiative is one part of Holbrook’s exciting new curriculum offer which goes far beyond the National Curriculum by offering children real-life experiences. Head of School Mr C Perry

Sailing Season Highlights Neptune Sailing has a primary aim of increasing opportunities for young people to get on the water and continued to make good progress with this during the year. A steady supply of qualified instructors is an essential pre-requisite in providing sailing opportunities, and two Dinghy Instructor courses were run, with the July course very over-subscribed. The courses resulted in 15 newly qualified instructors, with the RYA coaches being very impressed by the standard demonstrated on the courses. Neptune youth groups continued to offer evening activities to smaller groups on three evenings. Schools have continued with numbers increasing, this again by continuing each year to allow students to achieve higher qualifications up to instructor. Scouts again have increased and we already have enquiries for large groups next year. Open courses again increased in number and the adult courses have really grown with additional courses added. Powerboat courses continue to increase year after year. Laying Up We will be taking our fleet off the water on Saturday 2 November at 1pm. This involves a large team to move to shore, turn, clean, put onto trollies and move to compound. Any volunteers to help us will be welcomed. This also gives anyone wanting to purchase a dinghy a chance to become familiar with dismantling and moving. The craft will also be de-rigged, and any maintenance identified and planned. Your Support is Vitial Neptune Sailing is totally reliant on our management team, instructors, assistant instructors, parents, volunteers and supporters, both on and off the water. We still need to recruit additional volunteers to help us both on the water and also with craft and centre maintenance. If you’d like to find out more about getting involved, please visit our website where you will find contact details. https://neptunesailing.org.uk

In St Luke’s Gospel, the Evangelist recorded the words of Our Lady as she prayed: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour”. Before reciting the Angelus, Pope Francis reflected on the two verbs in that prayer: to rejoice and to magnify. “We rejoice when something so beautiful happens that it is not enough to rejoice inside, in the soul, but we want to express happiness with the whole body. Mary rejoices because of God, she teaches us to rejoice in God, because He does great things.” “To magnify means to exalt a reality for its greatness, for its beauty,” continued Pope Francis. “Mary proclaims the greatness of the Lord. She shows us that if we want our life to be happy, God must be placed first, because He alone is great.” He warned of getting lost in the pettiness of life, chasing after things of little importance, “prejudices, grudges, rivalries, envy and superfluous material goods”. Mary, on the other hand, invites us to “look upward at the ‘great things’ the Lord has accomplished in her”. “Let us be attracted by true beauty,” the Pope concluded, “let us not be drawn in by the petty things in life, but let us choose the greatness of Heaven”. Pope Francis concluded by praying that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Gate of Heaven, may help us daily to fix our gaze with confidence and joy “on the place where our true home lies”. EVENTS AND DIARY DATES The 100 Club draw took place on October13 at Holy Family when three lucky winners shared a £165 prize pot. The next draw takes place on Sunday 24 November. The club, set up to support the life and mission of our parish, has grown from strength to strength since its launch. New members are always very welcome and the newsletter, that includes an application form, can be found at the rear of the church or at: www.stmarksparish.org.uk Every last Thursday of the month a Bring & Buy Coffee Morning takes place at Viv and Wyn’s home, Paddock Gate, Whitehorse Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TR from 10.30am to noon. We are raising funds for the new carpet in the Parish Room and all are very welcome to join us.

CHURCH NEWS
CHELMONDISTON & HOLBROOK METHODIST CHURCHES An Outer Veneer Under the showroom lights, it looked a wonderful piece of furniture. I was taken in. I imagined it was solid wood, built to last. Within the year, a thin layer of veneer started to come away and soon cracked to expose chipboard beneath. In time other bits peeled away and it was looking a tatty bit of furniture which needed to be replaced. Sometime people can be the same. We superficially look the part, but after a few knocks and bruises, we are a mess. I’ve just read about a case from a different continent where four policemen have been charged with the kidnap and murder of three Christian workers who were working to support poor people suffering from injustice. The four policemen had the outer respectability of a police uniform, but underneath were murderers. There have been cases in this country where what seem like respectable people, serving in the community or church, yet in the dark side of their lives, committing bad and sometimes criminal acts. We can all think of examples in many walks of life where politicians, social workers, teachers, church leaders, doctors and so forth have been caught doing something wicked, bringing their profession into disrepute. It’s not new: 2650 years ago a prophet called Amos spoke to the religious people of his day about the hollowness of the rituals they went through. They may offer their worship and their sacrifices, but God sees through their pretence – the outer veneer, he knows what is at the heart of these people. We all to some extent or other, put on masks to cover the real self, to cope in a world with the pressures to conform. But there is one place, which is open to all, where we can go and be totally open and honest, admitting our shallowness, our veneer, our failures. That place can be anywhere and everywhere – it’s a place to talk with God who knows everything about you without you saying a word, and he loves you, despite the worst things you might have done. If you are honest with him, you will know a peace that the world cannot give. If there is criminal wrongdoing, justice may need to be done (as we hope for the court case of the four policemen – one of whom has made confession to the court). Amos says; “let justice cascade down like a mighty river, and righteousness like an inexhaustible stream.” The promise of our honesty before God, a stream of righteous acts flowing through our lives to bless others. Acts, not from the outer veneer of superficial rituals, but from a solid foundation of a relationship with Jesus Christ.

CHURCH NEWS TWO RIVERS BENEFICE November is known by the church as the season of remembrance; most notably we will be hosting Services of Remembrance in our churches on Sunday 10 November to give thanks for those who have sacrificed their lives in conflict over the last 100 or so years. Remembrance Sunday is not about glorifying that conflict but working with the Royal British Legion to raise awareness of conflict and the needs of exservice personnel. Many can suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders and, of course, physical injuries, and the RBL works tirelessly to help them to find a new normality after they have been affected by conflict.

It’s important that whether we are Christians or not, we continue to remember and pass down the stories of these, often young, men and women to our children and grandchildren in the hope that they will learn from them. While we remember those who have fought, we also pray for those whose mission it is to work in areas of conflict, and to bring peace and relief to victims of war. I would ask all of you to spare a thought or a prayer for them that they may be able to continue their valuable work in safety. We look forward to seeing you at our Remembrance Services this year.
