June 2019

Can you feel it? That little something in the air that tells you summer is on its way! I have a good feeling about the summer of 2019 and we will be doing what we can to encourage people to visit and to support the enormous mix of events and attractions on offer in Felixstowe. How often have you said “I wish I’d thought of that” when you’ve discovered a new design or an idea which is perfect in its simplicity? Well I did when I heard about JAM Card and I think you’ll agree it’s a very simple idea which will work for that exact reason. JAM Card has been created to help improve communication. Developed by participants at the NOW Group, a social enterprise based in Belfast, it enables people with Asperger's or autism, cognitive difficulties, learning disabilities or temporary memory impairment, perhaps as a side effect of radiotherapy, to tell others they need ‘Just A Minute’ discreetly and easily. Those with a communication barrier are often reluctant or unable to tell others about their condition. JAM Card allows this to happen in a simple, effective non-verbal manner. JAM Card is available free as either a plastic card and as an app, but importantly, businesses need to become JAM Card Friendly and therapy radiographers Susie Layzell and Lara Burgess are determined to make Felixstowe the first JAM Card Friendly town in the region. As a JAM Card Friendly business your staff will gain valuable knowledge about how to provide excellent customer service when serving a person with a disability. Your customers will be aware that you are a socially conscious business and have taken the initiative to train your staff in disability etiquette. You will be provided with JAM Card window stickers to display in your organisation plus logos and marketing material to promote yourself as a JAM Card Friendly business on your website and social media. Your business will also be given priority appearance on the JAM Card app and you will be tagged as a JAM Card Friendly Business. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Felixstowe and for Felixstowe to set the standard for others to aspire to. Find out how you can join the campaign by going to JAM Card for Businesses at: www.jamcard.org / Twitter #JAMcard section

Special Feature Felixstowe Travel Agency Named One of the Best in the British Isles Fred. Olsen Travel in Felixstowe has been named one of the best in the nation. Fred. Olsen Travel was named one the best 50 agencies in the UK and Ireland as part of a powerlist by industry bible, the Travel Trade Gazette. Fred. Olsen Travel was one of three agencies in the East of England category to earn a place in this prestigious list.

“Our winners demonstrate that travel retailing in 2019 is a vibrant and successful business sector, and that experienced travel professionals continue to add value through their expertise and by delivering extraordinary service to their customers. Each agency that earned a place in our Top 50 list this year worked hard to impress our judges and should feel incredibly proud of what they have achieved.” Fred. Olsen Travel, Group Retail Manager, Paul Hardwick said: “I feel extremely proud of the team at Felixstowe being named in the Top 50 agencies and it reinforces my belief that we deliver an exceptional service. “The Felixstowe branch continues to go from strength to strength having also been recognised within our own business as Top Performing Branch for 2018, scooping the award for Top Branch Manager – Kerrie Lake and also the award for Young Agent of the Year – Leah Johnson.”

You really should try the service yourself and visit Fred. Olsen Travel at 124-126 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe IP11 7AB or call the team on 01394 270456. More than 500 travel agencies and branches put themselves forward for consideration for TTG’s Top 50 Travel Agencies 2019 – in association with Kuoni – from which a shortlist of 100 finalists across 20 categories was devised. The TTG Top 50 Travel Agencies list was revealed in a glittering ceremony in Birmingham on 25 April after an extensive judging process which saw agents rated by tour operators and other suppliers, and then assessed by travel trade journalists. TTG group editor, Pippa Jacks said: “Now in its fourth year, our Top 50 Travel Agencies initiative has seen us tour the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland to uncover its most dedicated and innovative travel agency businesses.

Local News Rotary Club Fun Run 2019 There was another great turnout for the annual Rotary Club Fun Run with 723 runners, which took place on Bank Holiday Monday, 6 May. The course is from the Spa Pavilion, up Bent Hill, along Hamilton Gardens, down Bath Hill and back through the Spa Gardens which is a measured mile.

Local Student Enjoys Work Experience at Colourplan Print Nathan Stone, a student at Felixstowe Academy, is pictured doing his first work experience task at Colourplan Print. Next he'll be packing up the June edition of Spotlight on Felixstowe. It's nice to have you on the team Nathan, if only for a week.

Fancy Dress winners Runners pay a small fee to take part which goes towards the Rotary Charity Fund and they are also encouraged to seek sponsorship for their own cause or charity. The runners (or walkers) try to do as many laps as possible in one hour from 11am to noon, and this year two runners completed their first lap in a very impressive six minutes nine seconds! Fancy dress is also encouraged with cash prizes awarded to those who impressed the town Mayor the most, and some even took their dogs as well. It was great to see the age range from the very young to the more senior, and this picture shows father, son and grandfather taking part in the wonderful event. As usual, Carl Day was on hand to provide his amusing commentary and enjoyed chatting to some of the runners. Supplied by Peter Moss advertorial

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously

helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ipswich, Felixstowe & Stowmarket areas and manager Andy Kerridge agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing

a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

For example, David has three properties, the family home, a house he used to live in before he met Victoria and had a family, and a flat he purchased in Manchester for when their son was at university, which is now let out to other students. £10,000 rental income, £5,000 mortgage interest leaves £5,000 in cash profit. But for tax purposes in 2019/20, only 25% of the mortgage interest is available for tax relief at their marginal rate so the tax calculation is £10,000 - £1,250 mortgage interest = £8,750 x 40% = £3,750 less mortgage credit £750 (£3,750 x 20%) = £2,750 tax due. The tax rate on profit is now 55% and will increase to 60% from April 2020.

The 15 years of actual occupation as main residence from 1990 – 2005 is exempt, plus the last 18 months of ownership meaning £55,000 of the £100,000 is exempt. Lettings relief also exempts a further amount equal to the lower of £40,000 or the exempt gain, which is £40,000 in this example, leaving just £5,000 of the gain liable to tax which would likely be covered by their annual exempt amount of £12,000 in 2019/20.

15 years of actual occupation as main residence, but only the last 9 months of ownership will be exempt meaning just £52,500 of the gain will be exempt. Lettings relief will not be available at all after April 2020 leaving £47,500 of the gain liable to tax.

Local News News from Felixstowe Support Group Linda and Patrick have been co-ordinators of Parkinson’s Felixstowe Support Group for the past 12 years and now it’s time to hand over to someone else. When we first took on the co-ordinator post we were based in the Bartlet Hospital with eight people in the existing group. Our numbers have steadily grown since and now we regularly have around 35 attending our monthly meeting and sometimes peak at 40. We meet at Maidstone Road Baptist Church on the second Wednesday of the month from 2-4pm. Due to the generosity of people in Felixstowe we are able to part fund a weekly exercise class specifically geared for people with Parkinson’s and their carers for the second year and we thank you for your support. We also need your help for the following roles: co-ordinator and co-ordinator’s assistant. The co-ordinator would need to have organisational, IT and people skills and would manage the volunteer team. The expectation is a commitment of approximately 10 hours per month. The co-ordinator’s assistant would also need people skills and hands-on abilities: i.e. help with setting up the venue and help with chairing the group meetings. The expectation is approximately five hours per month. We have a team of four volunteers who work alongside the co-ordinator in their roles at present. If you would like further information we have job descriptions for both roles, outlining the requirements and benefits of volunteering. A Festival for Book Lovers More than 50 invited authors, and hundreds of book lovers, will arrive in town in June for the annual Felixstowe Book Festival. From 27 - 30 June there is the chance to meet some of your favourite authors and hear them speak about their latest book, but also discover new writers. This summer, novelists as diverse as James Runcie, Liz Trenow and Jonathon Coe will be talking about their books and there are opportunities to hear writers speak about biographies, thrillers, nature writing, politics, crime fiction, history, travel and much more. “We have a very exciting mix of fiction writers this year,” said Meg Reid, founder of the festival. “We have Lucy Hughes Hallett and Georgina Harding who are among the highest quality writers the country has at the moment. Emma Healey, who wrote the popular Emily is Missing, is coming to talk about her latest book and Rupert Thompson and Prue Leith are also coming.” Over the weekend book festival goers will be rushing around the town to get to as many of their favourite authors as they can. “Although the Felixstowe Book Festival is based at The Orwell Hotel, and the Children’s Book Festival is at the library, there will be events popping up all over the town,” explained Meg. “We are again having writing workshops in a shipping container, we are having a session on the beach using wooden puppets like a modern Punch and Judy, and we will also be in Landguard Fort and in the Seafront Gardens. There will be lots going on.” Whether you like to read fact or fiction, or want to learn from the experts so you can write yourself, head to the Felixstowe Book Festival. Tickets can be purchased from the New Wolsey Box Office on 01473 295900 and from the festival website: www.felixstowebookfestival.com where details about the authors, workshops and events are also available. Social Media Training for Businesses A special media training course that aims to show local business owners how to find and use the many free marketing tools that exist within social media is being held in the Felixstowe Chamber of Trade and Commerce’s new Business Hub above Crafty Coffee in Hamilton Road on 6 June. Organised in conjunction with MENTA Business Support, attendees will be shown how to reach more customers through their social media connections and hear how to harness the power of Google my Business to boost productivity and profits. They will also see how to create their own content, as well as learn some handy tips on branding their own imagery and see how that could help them grow their business SEO. Nick Pandolfi, a media professional working with SMEs across the UK, who will be presenting the course, says: “I’m looking forward to returning to Felixstowe, a town I grew up in and called home for many years. My family has strong business links with the town going back generations.” “While I enjoy using social media, I’m fully aware that many people in business are not sure what to do, or find it an onerous, time-consuming task. I will show how we can make social media a business friend and not a foe.” Nick added: “I intend to show delegates how to get more from Facebook, for example, and which other social media platforms work best for each business sector.” The course starts at 10am and will cost £7.50 for members and £10 for nonmembers. Email the Chamber at info@felixstowechamber.co.uk for more details, or book via the website: www.felixstowechamber.co.uk Supplied by Felixstowe Chamber of Trade and Commerce Photo: Social media course presenter Nick Pandolfi

Felixstowe Inner Wheel Club Eight members were amongst just under 2,000 attendees at the GB&I Conference in Cardiff. The Association President had nominated Jessie’s Fund as one of her charities for her presidential year. Jessie’s mother explained how it was founded and spoke about the work they do. It’s amazing what they can achieve by playing music to profoundly disabled children. Find out more at: www.jessiesfund.org.uk As usual, the conference radiated warmth and friendship. Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s organisations in the world. Common to popular belief we no longer wear hats and gloves, but we keep to the principles of our founder, Margaret Golding. Look up the website and if you think you might enjoy it do get in touch. We welcome new members. We are a woman’s organisation for women and this year we have launched a campaign to end period poverty. Our own club has, over the past couple of months, had talks on sailing the Panama Canal, Friends of Felixstowe Library, Lighthouse Women’s Aid and The Oaks Children’s Centre. We celebrate our 80th birthday in May. Our charities this year are The Oaks and RNLI, chosen by our president. Supplied by Club Correspondent Gillian Smith

Swimming is a truly amazing activity, facilitating development of crucial higher brain functions, core muscles and co-ordination. It is never too early to introduce your baby or child to the joys of being in the water, as long as you do it in a loving, caring and safety-conscious manner. Your child will learn to not only enjoy, but also respect water and this has to be one of the most important gifts you can give your child. Puddle Ducks run classes in various venues with the closest to Felixstowe being at Stratton Hall in Levington. We teach here seven days a week.

Or visit www.chipsawayipswich.co.uk @ChipsAwayIps

At Puddle Ducks, we offer the following: • Highly trained and qualified teachers who are experts at identifying children’s levels of ability and adapting activities to the individual, nurturing confidence and encouraging natural ability. Did you know it takes over 300 hours to become a Puddle Ducks teacher! • All of our lessons are child led. We observe and listen to your child to ensure they are doing what they are comfortable with to ensure we build their confidence and allow them to develop at their own pace. • We focus on personal survival skills in each lesson so our children are learning activities that could save their lives. We hear many stories from customers whose children have fallen into ponds/rivers and managed to save themselves in a calm way without panicking.

• Our classes are grouped by age so your child and you are making friends with children of similar ages. • Courtesy Classes – We believe you should have the opportunity to attend as many lessons as you have paid for. Local News Felixstowe Museum Felixstowe Museum was officially opened for the new season by the Mayor of Felixstowe, Councillor Graham Newman and his wife on 21 April. The new displays were unveiled and the museum was busy with visitors. A special visitor was Alan Downard, a member of the 67th Medium Regiment, R.A. (T.A) in the Second World War, serving in North Africa. He is 100 years old and had many memories to share. There are several new exhibitions this season. One gallery celebrates the sixties with mini-skirts, hoovers and hairdryers! This was a time of great social change and innovation and the displays of local memorabilia share the optimism of the period. 1964 brought Radio Caroline to the airwaves and with music being a big part of that era, Felixstowe & Offshore Radio Group has put together an exhibition about the station. It wasn’t all fun and the gallery also includes a presentation about the Felixstowe branch of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (RNXS). The RNXS was established in 1963 and was a uniformed, unarmed, civilian volunteer service, administered and trained by the Royal Navy to operate in the ports and anchorages of the UK in an emergency. It maintained training units and vessels at most major ports in the UK. The service was disbanded on 31 March 1994 due to Ministry of Defence (MOD) cuts.

The museum is popular with children and this year offers a children’s corner with activities and dressing up clothes for its younger visitors. During May and June only there is a display from the Haven History Project. This commemorates the surrender of the German U Boats in November 1918. In total, 168 U-boats were brought to Harwich to be handed over, creating a giant metal corridor known as U-boat Avenue. Despite its significance and prominence at the time, the surrender has been largely forgotten.

SPECIAL EVENTS • Friday 21 June: Felixstowe is launching Suffolk Day this year and the museum will be opening on the day to join in the celebrations. • Sunday 30 June: The museum will be hosting a pop-up event as part of Felixstowe Book Festival. Professional storyteller Elsbeth Crichton Stuart will tell the story of the Kinder Transport. The first Kinder Transport arrived in Harwich in December 1938 and Elsbeth recounts the events of that time and the experiences of the children.

OPENING HOURS Noon-5pm Easter to June: Sundays, Bank Holiday Mondays and Wednesdays in half term June, July and September: Sundays and Wednesdays August: Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays October: Sundays and Wednesday in half term Entrance fees: Adults £2, children 50p. Legal Eyes Felixstowe Book Festival 27 to 30 June 2019

The Felixstowe Book Festival

is now one of the most important events in Suffolk’s calendar and Jackamans Solicitors is proud to have been a co-sponsor since the beginning. Now in its seventh year it is thriving, and continues to increase in the number and range of its events; broadening its appeal to individuals of virtually any age and reading taste. The festival offers a varied literary programme which includes authors’ events in four Felixstowe venues; a pop-up festival on the seafront, at our historic fort and museum, and on the two rivers which border the town. This year there will also be a special package of writing workshops – being promoted to writing groups nationally – to attract aspiring writers to the festival. This will increase the festival’s profile and encourage a range of audiences from a larger geographical area. Last year more than 2,000 tickets were sold and this year the number is likely to increase.

There is an exciting range of author events for both adults and children. The speakers include well-known and respected writers covering a wide range of genres and also debut novelists and those from writing groups. To demonstrate the festival’s diversity, authors include former politician Alan Johnson, Alison Weir (author of Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets) and Esther Freud (festival patron) and half-sister Annie Freud discussing Annie’s poetry. Children’s events are incredibly diverse and include Hotel Flamingo Drawalong with Alex Milway, Sutton Hoo Roadshow, Operation Buried Treasure with Ally Sherrick and Calling Mission Control. Spoilt for choice, you will have the pick of at least three speaker events each hour from early Saturday morning until Sunday evening. This format creates a warm and vibrant festival atmosphere. If you haven’t attended Felixstowe Book Festival before – or any book festival – do give this one a try!

Local News Ipswich G&S Singers Music for Everyone Concert Felixstowe Rotary Club is delighted to welcome back to Felixstowe the popular Ipswich Gilbert & Sullivan Society Singers with their Music for Everyone concert programme at 7.30pm on Saturday 15 June at St John’s Church in Orwell Road. As in previous years, the evening will feature varied material with many well-loved and popular melodies from classical to pop including music from television, stage and screen, humorous songs, serious songs, bizarre songs, combinations of different words/music and – of course – some Gilbert & Sullivan.

A New Arts Centre for the Felixstowe Peninsula A Two Sisters Arts Centre was launched on 27 April with an evening featuring performance poet Luke Wright, Suffolk historian and raconteur Charlie Haylock and music from Stacks of Sax. It was officially opened by our Patron Rachel Sloane and attended by Felixstowe Mayor, Councillor Graham Newman. Within the now redundant church of St Mary’s in Trimley, and in the heart of the community, it is hoped that this space will become a vibrant hub of quality arts performances, workshops and exhibitions as well as providing space for rehearsals, lectures, recitals and other forms of creative activity. The space is administered by Felixstowe Creative Arts Trust (F-CAT).

The choir will be conducted by their musical director, Andrew Burke. All the songs will be performed by their soloists and ensembles, as well as the full chorus.

The building has been cleaned and repainted and has a licensed bar, a stage, comfortable and flexible seating and a green room. A number of events are already lined up for the next few months including Friday night jazz sessions, Sunday afternoon music concerts, arts workshops and touring theatre performances.

All funds raised from this performance will be for Felixstowe Rotary Club’s support of the Worldwide Polio Eradication programme.

The building is available for hire by visual and performance artists and groups. Please ring Suzanne on 01394 279613 to book.

Tickets at £10 are available in advance from Mark Davis on 07967 047924 or from Russell Smith in Hamilton Road, Felixstowe and, of course, on the door. Refreshments will be available. Supplied by Mark Davis

More than 500 historic vehicles ranging from cars, motorbikes, busses, trucks and military vehicles took part in the 49th Vehicle Run from Christchurch Park in Ipswich to Felixstowe on Sunday 5 May. Unlike last year, the sky was overcast with the occasional spot of rain, but that did not dampen the spirits of those taking part and the hundreds of spectators who came to admire these wonderful machines. It is a credit to the owners who lovingly restore and care for their pride and joy, at the same time providing a glimpse of the past. I for one can clearly remember my father and grandfather owning some of the vehicles on show and I couldn’t help but wonder how all the family managed to squeeze into such tiny spaces, unlike the modern cars of today. Local Feature We’re all Going on a Summer Holiday (Part 5)

Life | Land | Business

It is with great sadness that Graham passed away recently whilst this article was being prepared. Carol and Ian believe Graham would have wanted the article to be continued and this is now in his memory. 35 days since Graham, Carol and Ian had left England, having explored the Topkapi Palace of The Ottoman Sultans, The Blue Mosque with its 50 metre high dome and The Covered Bazaar in Istanbul, followed by visits to The Crusader Castles of Iskenderun, then on into Syria and The Antiquaries in Hamam, Homs and Damascus they arrived at the dusty town of Aqaba, Jordan. There were plenty of check points throughout the town but none were manned so they headed alongside the Gulf of Aqaba towards the Saudi Arabian border, which they crossed with surprising ease, probably because the border guards were shocked to see a British registered Land Rover pulling a caravan! Once across the border they headed towards the Red Sea towns of Dubai and Al Wajh ending up in Yanbu for the night, which at the time was not the port it is today. After a pleasant swim in the Red Sea (before someone in a boat shouted at Ian saying that there were sharks in the vicinity!) they decided to turn left and head towards Riyadh, but when the locals started throwing stones and sticks at them, in a rather unfriendly manner, they realised that they were on the road to Medina, a major Islamic pilgrimage site. Skirting Medina, for obvious reasons, the caravan followed the fourlegged variety across Saudi Arabia, eventually arriving at a small dusty town called Doha where a bit of R & R was called for, before the trip north back to Europe. Don’t think this ends here… there is West Africa to tell you about yet! Supplied by Malcolm Stafford

Jazz Galore with No Fee! The Suffolk group Jazz Galore will provide cheerful music, just for expenses, so that everyone can have some entertainment at their summer event. "Members play for enjoyment rather than profit", says band member Mike Smith, adding that they provide a greater variety of numbers than most bands and are not too loud. Mike can be contacted on 07874 034390.

Step Up to Walk for Parkinson’s at Glemham Hall People across Suffolk are being asked to help stop Parkinson’s for good by joining their local Walk for Parkinson’s event at Glemham Hall on Sunday 9 June. The Glemham Hall Walk for Parkinson’s event is one of 45 across the UK set to raise over £600,000 for charity Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research to find better treatments and a cure for the condition. At this family friendly event, distances for walkers include a 1.5-mile, 3.5-mile or 5.5-mile route around the beautiful grounds of Glemham Hall. One in 37 of us will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s in our lifetime. This neurological condition affects people of all ages and has over 40 symptoms including tremors, loss of mobility and dementia. Over the past four years, Walk for Parkinson’s fundraisers have raised over £1.5 million for Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research to find a cure – and the charity believes that scientists could now be on the verge of a major breakthrough. Dave Clark, Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011 at the age of 44. Dave is a keen walker himself and he’s encouraging people to sign up to the walk at Glemham Hall. He said: “Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research gives me hope that we will find a cure for this brutal condition, and we’re now on the verge of major research breakthroughs that could end Parkinson’s for good. So whatever your age or ability, please sign up to Walk for Parkinson’s at Glemham Hall and be part of the final push to find a cure.” The registration fee for the event is £12 for adults and £5 for under-16s, with team discounts available. Everyone who registers will receive a free Parkinson’s UK t-shirt, fundraising pack and at the end of the walk, a finisher’s medal. Walkers should aim to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. To sign up to the walk, or to find out more, please contact 020 7963 3912 / fundraising@parkinsons.org.uk or visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk/ walkglemham For a full list of the 45 locations in the Walk for Parkinson’s series, visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk/walks

Health & Beauty Have Fun in the Sun Safely Sunnier days are upon us which means you’re likely to be spending more time outside, and while you're enjoying the sun's rays it's integral to protect yourself from their harmful effects with a good sunscreen.

Choosing your sunscreen

It's best to choose a sunscreen labelled as broad-spectrum, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays cause sunburn. Overexposure to both can put you at risk of developing skin cancer. Choose a high SPF rating. SPF is a measure of how much UVB light a sunscreen can filter out. SPF 15 blocks around 93 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks around 97 percent.

Using your sunscreen

It's important to apply enough sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin every day. On days you're going to be outdoors for an extended period of time, put a base coat of SPF 30 all over the body half an hour before leaving the house and then reapply every two hours. If you're swimming, grab the sunscreen every time you get out of the water, even if it states that it's waterproof. No sunscreen can completely protect you from the sun so it's important to reapply throughout the day, wear protective clothing (hats, sun-protective swimwear and clothing) and seek shade.

Protecting your face

• Back pain & sciatica • Neck pain • Arthritic pain • Joint & muscle pain:

It's best to invest in a sunscreen designed for your face because the product used on your body may irritate your skin and run into your eyes, which can sting! When choosing the right sunscreen for your face, think about your skin type. If you have oily skin and are prone to blemishes, choose a sunscreen labelled as non-comedogenic, which means that it has been shown not to block pores. If you have dry skin, look for moisturisers with sunscreen or sunscreens that contain hydrating ingredients. For sensitive skin, opt for a physical (mineral) sunscreen. Physical sunscreen features zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect skin; these two ingredients sit on top of your skin forming a protective barrier and can be kinder than chemical alternatives. Lisa Tyte, Spotlight on Felixstowe

Try this... If your bottle of sunscreen takes up too much space in your handbag or day pack, decant it into a smaller container and refill it when it's almost empty. You can buy an empty travel bottle or recycle a cosmetic container when your product runs dry.

Local News Free ECG Screening Clinic Funded by The Ben Ramsay Memorial Fund We previously reported the death of Ben Ramsay (22) in August 2017 from Adult Death Syndrome and how Felixstowe Freight Club (FFC) had decided, with the family’s blessing, to help set up a memorial fund in Ben's name. The first aim was to fund the cost of bringing a mobile cardiac screening unit to Felixstowe to screen 100 local youngsters. The charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) will arrange for a mobile screening unit to visit the local area and screen young persons for any undetected heart conditions, but at a cost of over £5,000 for a day this was going to prove difficult to achieve. As well as seeking donations, this involved the FFC hosting a luncheon at The Orwell Hotel on 1 June 2018. The lunch was a tremendous success and with other donations the magnificent sum of £10,750 was raised. As a result, the first of two screenings will take place at Fairfield Infant School, Felixstowe on Saturday 20 July. If any young person aged between 14 and 35 years is interested in being screened, available spaces can be found on the CRY website at the end of June. Simply go to www.testmyheart.org.uk where you’ll find Felixstowe listed as an event and click to register. Ben’s family would like to thank Felixstowe Freight Club and everyone who helped make the screening possible. For further information about CRY’s vision to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, please visit: www.c-r-y.org.uk. You can make a donation to The Ben Ramsay Memorial Fund at: www.c-r-y.org.uk/donations/memorial-fund-donations-m-r

Lions Club of Felixstowe Our Saturday morning car boot sales are well underway, but at a new location; the Pier Plaza on Undercliff Road West (adjacent to the pier and the leisure centre). The new location is better positioned and should give a much greater footfall, making it more attractive to sellers and buyers alike; sellers £6, charities £3 (maximum two tables), buyers free. Opens to sellers at around 7.30pm. Over the Easter weekend we held our giant Easter egg draws at various locations in the town and raised more than £1,000 before expenses. We also had three collectors in Hamilton Road helping to collect money for the Marie Curie charity. One of our members, Richard Woolnough, is just completing the refurbishment of a wooden play feature in the Felixstowe Opportunity Group (FOG) play area. FOG is based in the Felixstowe Academy grounds in Maidstone Road and is a registered charity supporting children with additional needs and their families within a friendly environment, allowing respite time for parents/carers.

Felixstowe Volunteer Centre Felixstowe Volunteer Centre is looking for a volunteer treasurer. The centre meets in January, May (AGM) and September. If you are interested contact Sandra on 01394 284770 for more information.

Home & Garden Felixstowe’s Community Nature Reserve Celebrates its Fourth Birthday In Bristol, they have started a Schools’ Nature Reserve where six schools across the city each have their own conservation area. In Hampshire, the idea of community nature reserves, like ours, has been woven into one of their Local Plans.

Looking back over the last four years, it’s definitely been a time where we’ve made good progress towards our conservation targets – but we’ve also been able to make many new friends far and wide. When we started, our main goal was to encourage 1,666 local people to each allocate at least three square yards of their back gardens for wildlife-friendly features such as plants, ponds, bird feeders, hedgehog homes, insect lodges and re-wildling. That level of participation would create a community nature reserve which is the equivalent in area to a full-sized football pitch. In only our first four years, we’ve attracted just over 1,300 local people with an average allocation of 3.65 square yards for each participant. That means that we’ve almost completed our goal of creating an area equivalent to a football pitch of 5,000 square yards. One of the encouraging features about this work is the way other communities have been inspired by these ideas. In the Leicestershire village of Cosby, they have started their own Community Nature Reserve.

We have also made new friends on the international stage too. In the United States, Communities magazine has featured our work, as well as the work of our Citizen Science Group. In Europe, we’ve made new friends among the European Citizen Science Association. Through those friends, our work became featured in one of the blogs which promoted Citizen Science Day on 13 April this year. Also in April, our work was discussed at the UKSG conference. From Copenhagen, we recently welcomed an MSc student who wanted to visit Felixstowe to learn more about what we are doing and how we are doing it. More recently he has played in many National and International elite level amateur events including the Deaflympics where he returned with a silver medal. Paul has a fantastic work ethic and practises relentlessly, spending a huge amount of his time playing a sport he loves and is excellent at. He has now decided to turn professional and will be playing on the EuroPro tour. He is looking for sponsors and would be happy to talk to anyone if they are interested in assisting him on his inspiring journey, please contact him on warings4@sky.com. As far as the club is concerned we are extremely proud of Paul and wish him lots of luck for the future. Our resident professional, Andrew Robinson, is also doing brilliantly right now. He has recently played in the PGA Pro Championship qualifier at Gog Magog GC and won by shooting a stunning eight under par, gross 64, four shots clear of his nearest rival in a field of 78 head professionals, so all in all we are very fortunate to have such great professionals in our midst and look forward to seeing what comes next for them in their golfing careers. Sport & Leisure A Tense Morning at Trimley Bowls Club There was a mix of tension and anticipation as the ten committee members took their places around the table. By a strange coincidence, the monthly committee meeting of Trimley (Cranfield) Bowls Club was taking place at precisely the same time as Max Dalzell, director of Pumps and Filtrations Ltd., was outside drilling a borehole on their behalf in the hope of finding water. The operation represented a large financial commitment and failure to find water would have been a major disappointment for the club.

There was the fear that the water source had totally disappeared, due either to climate change or an adjacent new housing development. Local Councillor Graham Harding heard of the club’s plight and offered to use his undeniable skill with dowsing rods to search for a suitable location for a new borehole. Graham quickly identified a position, close to the clubhouse, where he was sure there was water available. He also invited the club to apply for a grant to help with the cost of drilling the borehole. Outside the clubhouse, 20 minutes after the start of the meeting and two hours after commencing the drilling, Max and his men had drilled to a depth of just over four metres when they struck water. At eight and a half metres they hit the London Clay that runs under much of Suffolk. The good news that the club had secured a source of water with a depth of 4.5 metres was very welcome and a huge relief to the committee members inside.

One of the ten committee members around that table was Paul Hazelwood. Paul has looked after the bowls green at Trimley, acknowledged to be one of the finest greens in Suffolk, for more than 30 years and was a strong advocate for the new borehole. As the club greenkeeper, it had been Paul’s responsibility to maintain the green’s great condition throughout the long hot summer months of 2018. He had a team to help him, but the decision to use 56,000 litres of water a week at a cost of around £100 was his alone, and the knowledge that he was spending club funds weighed heavily on his shoulders. A successful borehole would provide free irrigation water for the foreseeable future. Chairperson Gill Haseman opened the meeting at 10am, but the throb of the drilling rig engine was a constant reminder of what was at stake and the journey that had culminated in that moment. Two years previously a shallower borehole had run dry after only a couple of years.

Later, Gill Haseman said: “The club committee and all of its members would like to express their sincere appreciation for the help they have received from Councillor Graham Harding and Suffolk Coastal District Council for making this borehole happen, and also Trimley Parish Council for their cooperation.” “The installation of this borehole means a great deal to the club,” she added. “Going forward it will reduce our overheads and help us to keep our subscription fees down, which is very important at a time when bowls clubs throughout the country are closing at an unprecedented rate. Apart from having a truly magnificent lawn bowls green, we offer short mat bowls during the winter months and also hold regular social events such as quiz nights, bingo and beetle drives. Trimley Bowls really is a welcoming and friendly club and if anyone is tempted to try bowling, call Terry Piner on 01394 278281 for a chat. There is no better club to get you started and to make new friends.” Greenkeeper, Paul Hazelwood, SCDC Councillor, Graham Harding, Heather Rodwell from Trimley St Martin Parish Council and Gillian Haseman, Chairperson of Trimley Bowls Club are pictured.
