May 2019

I’m very excited to be your new Editor. When I moved to Suffolk my first day out was to Felixstowe where, for some insane reason, Daniel and I had decided to try rollerblading! If you were on the prom on 15 February 1996, I apologise now for any trauma I might have inflicted. Another day on the beach I remember, with great fondness, is a New Wolsey Theatre photoshoot with a panto dame dressed as a mermaid, but that’s a long story for another time! I grew up on a farm in Co Galway and have always loved being part of a local community. My parents were always on one committee or another, always signing us up for fundraising activities or sending me out to sell tickets. I now see how this early experience has influenced the decisions I’ve made since. My college dissertation argued that despite increased globalisation, local radio would always have an audience. My first proper job was with an agency which specialised in producing programming for local radio, and here I am many years later working for a company which specialises in producing community magazines. Isn’t it funny how things work out! I’ve worked at Mansion House for close on six years now and I continue to be amazed that so much happens in each of the 18 In Touch publication areas (listed below). The variety of groups meeting, the number and range of fundraising events, the dedication of so many in making things happen for the benefit of others… It’s truly aweinspiring and it’s an honour to be able to help in some small way by spreading the word. I look forward to doing the same with Spotlight. I’m equally passionate about supporting local business. Perhaps like me you like to know who you’re buying from and like having a more personalised service. Local businesses provide jobs and work experience opportunities for our children. They play a critical role in supporting and sustaining our local community and when we spend locally more of that money stays in the community. Our objective at Mansion House Publishing is to enable local communities to thrive and to provide an invaluable tool for local businesses to reach customers in a targeted and cost effective way. This we have been doing for over 20 years though In Touch and that’s why Spotlight is a perfect fit. We’re grateful to Peter for creating this lovely publication and thankful he has chosen us to take it forward. I’m also excited to explore how we can promote Felixstowe in the other areas where we publish.

Local News £20,000 Raised to Celebrate 20th Year

Spring Concert

A local business has made a phenomenal commitment to charity by raising £20,000 throughout their 20th year in business by organising a number of exciting initiatives and events. The Hearing Care Centre is an awardwinning family-run hearing care company, based locally at Grove Medical Centre, Felixstowe. The company was established in 1998 and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Staff at the company decided to challenge themselves to raise more money for charity than they ever had done before and pledged to raise £20,000 for their chosen charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a charity which has created over 900 partnerships between deaf people and hearing dogs across the UK.

On Saturday 18 May at 7.30pm, St John the Baptist Church, Orwell Road, Felixstowe, will host Ipswich Community Light Orchestra for a wonderful Spring Concert. The showcase piece will be Saint-Saens’ Organ Concerto (3rd movement), more recently familiar as the theme to the film Babe. The soloist is celebrated organist Peter Crompton (he has played for the Peter Crompton Remembrance Service at the Royal Albert Hall), and the orchestra’s conductor is Roger Jones. Also featured is an arrangement of Tale of Two Cities from a musical composed by Felixstowe sisters, Chandra Grover and Carolyn Goates. Entrance is free, but donations are welcomed in aid of St John’s fabric fund for much needed conservation and accessibility. Supplied by Penny Brookes

The money was raised with the help of the company’s customer base, the general public and employees. Amongst a wealth of activities, staff waded through mud and freezing water in the Whole Hog Challenge, guests ate as many puddings as they liked at a Pudding Club Night, over 400 people attended the company’s very popular quiz nights and over 100 tubes of Smarties were emptied and filled up with 20 pence pieces. The fundraising pot was also topped up by Barclays Bank who generously matched some of the Hearing Care Centre’s events up to £1,000 each time. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, commented: “We are ecstatic to be able to present Hearing Dogs for Deaf People with this money, which will go such a long way towards the brilliant work that they do. Thank you to everybody in the local community who has supported us during this feat, we hope you will continue to support us in our future fundraising”. Rachel Clarke, Hearing Dogs’ Community Fundraising Manager in East Anglia, said: “We feel incredibly privileged to have had The Hearing Care Centre’s support for almost 20 years and the fact that they have chosen to support the charity again during this milestone year - achieving such a massive target in a short space of time - shows their enthusiasm and dedication to helping deaf people with the gift of a hearing dog.”

Murder in the Library Evening Felixstowe Library are holding a Murder in the Library evening on Saturday 25 May, starting at 7.30pm. Up Front Productions, led by Mike Henderson, will perform their play entitled The Entrepreneur - You're Dead, based very loosely on The Apprentice. The audience try and guess who the murderer is - great fun for all! Teams of 4 - 6 people will have an evening of fun and mayhem and there will be a prize for the winning team. Bring your own drinks and glasses and the library will include nibbles and cookies as part of the £10 ticket for each person. Tickets will be on sale at the library at the end of April so keep a look out as there is only space for 60 people in the audience! Supplied by The Friends of Felixstowe Library

The company has announced details of its inaugural Charity Golf Day and BBQ taking place on Wednesday 17 July at Seckford Hall Golf Club, near Woodbridge. Local News 49th Ipswich to Felixstowe Classic Vehicle Rally The Ipswich to Felixstowe Car Rally is an annual event with up to 500 vehicles, including cars, lorries, motorcycles, buses and military vehicles, making a 10 mile (16 km) journey from Christchurch Park, Ipswich, to the promenade at Felixstowe where they line up for a large part of the day.

Official Opening of The Hadwen Room The Friends of Felixstowe Library held their first Annual General Meeting following their formation last year, and it was held at Felixstowe Library on Saturday 23 March. The meeting was attended by some 40 plus members. The chairman, Sarah Wilson, opened the meeting and gave details of the group’s activities in the past year which was followed by the treasurer giving her report which showed the group are financially sound. Leslie Dolphin, from BBC Radio Suffolk, gave details of activities planned for the coming year. The committee were then re-elected for another year.

This year’s rally is on Sunday 5 May with vehicles assembling in Christchurch Park from 8.30am - 10.30am and arriving in Felixstowe at noon where they are on display on both sides of The Pier and in the beachside events area for the afternoon. Many Felixstowe residents with classic cars regularly take part in this annual event. Supplied by Gerry F Capon

Following the AGM, there was an official opening of The Hadwen Room, carried out by Mrs Gill Hadwen, accompanied by Mayor of Felixstowe, Mr Graham Newman. Gill’s late husband, Phil Hadwen, known affectionately as Mr Felixstowe, was a great supporter of the library and so much more in the town. He is still greatly missed. Following the opening, all those present were entertained by the wonderful Children’s Choir. The pictures were taken by Suzy Mason and truly reflect Phil’s passion for his town of Felixstowe. Legal Eyes The Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 What happens when a Landlord wants to oppose the renewal of a protected business tenancy under s.30 ground (f ) of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954? S Franses Limited v The Cavendish Hotel London Limited Judgment This article seeks to provide further insight into the recent judgment of one of the most noteworthy cases to reach the Supreme Court in 2018. In summary, the case was brought to the court due to the tenant (S Franses) challenging the landlords (Cavendish Hotel) opposition to a new tenancy under section 30 ground (f ) of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954. Specifically, the case dealt with the rationale and the conditions behind the landlord’s primary objective in redeveloping the land. In what was a remarkable outcome, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the tenant. It became clear as the case progressed that the landlord’s intention to carry out works was not in fact settled and in actuality, the landlord's aim was to gain vacant possession of the property. The crux of the dispute in this case came down to whether such a fabricated intention was the original objective of the statute and therefore if the ground should fail, or whether the reasoning is immaterial. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court went further than this and used the acid test. This essentially sought to evaluate the basis of intention and whether the landlord would propose the same works if the tenant left of his own accord. In application to the case, the landlord did not wish to do the works if they could be done whilst the tenant remained in possession.

Ipswich 01473 255591 Diss 01379 643555

Felixstowe 01394 279636 Harleston 01379 www.jackamans.co.uk The conclusion therefore (made by Lord Sumption) was that this kind of intention was not the fixed and settled intention that ground (f ) requires.

The judgment sets a higher burden of proof on landlords relying on ground (f ) and having to show a settled intention. It lays the foundation that a tenant’s statutory right to renew should not be bypassed by proposed works which would not have been carried out by the landlord if the tenant had left voluntarily. Although this decision found in favour for the tenant, we will not know its effects until it is referred to in County Court cases. The actual application of this case may be limited as it is not commonplace for a landlord to be so open about its manufactured proposal of works. However, the court will need to be satisfied that the works will be done, even if the tenant was to leave voluntarily and that the motive of the landlord is only to do the works.

The competition was organised by the Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum. Chairman Alan Muchal said: “78 people entered the competition at cafés and other outlets in Felixstowe serving Fairtrade tea, including Café Ology, the Spa, Crafty Coffee and the Wool Baa Café. They were asked to complete a simple survey on how they enjoyed their tea and whether they buy Fairtrade goods. 95% of respondents said the tea was good or excellent. 75% of respondents bought Fairtrade goods when they could, but that still leaves 25% needing encouragement. A wide range of Fairtrade products are available at shops and supermarkets in Felixstowe so we will redouble our efforts to encourage more people to buy Fairtrade.” The Forum organised a number of events in Felixstowe during Fairtrade Fortnight including a Family Fun Day at Felixstowe Library and Tea on the Prom on Sunday 10 March. Felixstowe is a Fairtrade Town and 2019 marks 10 years since it was awarded Fairtrade Town status. Buying Fairtrade products ensures that producers in the developing world receive a fair price for their goods. An additional social premium goes towards community facilities such as clean drinking water. Priorities are decided locally.

Starting and running a business can be a real challenge, so giving business owners access to a facility which offers helpful advice and guidance could be vital to achieving success.” Roger Abbott, Chairman of Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce, comments: “We’re thrilled to launch this innovative facility that aims to support the needs of the town’s smaller businesses and self-employed, helping to stimulate economic prosperity in Felixstowe. Local News Felixstowe Nursing Home Extends Respite Invitation to Community A residential nursing home based in Felixstowe is offering respite care services for anyone looking for additional help in caring for a loved one. Mill Lane Nursing Home, on the corner of Mill Lane and Garrison Lane, is extending an invitation for people from the town to visit the home for a tour to see the facilities and to learn more about how respite is able to support people, should they be looking for help with a loved one for short-term respite support, or over a longer-term period. The home, which is rated as good by the CQC, is able to support people, whether it’s for a few hours, a day or short-term breaks, providing a vital life-line to many people who may be caring for a relative at home. John Savage, Manager of Mill Lane Nursing Home, said: “People don’t realise that they have access to respite services here at Mill Lane. It gives people in Felixstowe the chance to take some time out to run errands, go to appointments, or even have a small break from providing personal care to a loved one, but safe in the knowledge they are in comfortable, local surroundings. “The advantages are clear: the loved one receives the care they need from trained professionals, in a homely setting, and enjoy freshly cooked meals. They can join in our activities programme and socialise with our residents too, meanwhile offering peace of mind to their loved one that they are receiving all the support they may need.”

Mrs Jean McKeown from Felixstowe selected Mill Lane Nursing Home when her husband required temporary support following a fall that led him to break his arm. Jean said: “Andrew had experienced several falls, with one leading to him breaking his arm. It was quite a break and so he spent some time in hospital while he recovered. In mid November, we took the decision for him to relocate to a home, nearer to me, so he could receive more personalised care in a home-from-home setting. Mill Lane Nursing Home was the home of our choice; it’s near to home and has a very good reputation. I had no concerns about Andrew moving there for the help he needs. “For me, it gave me peace of mind that Andrew was receiving the care he needed to get better. Now, three months on, his mobility has improved with support from the team, so much so he is in a position to return back home. Being able to have Andrew back home is a major step forward. Plus, for me, I know that if I need help at any time, Mill Lane is up the road and we can access their respite care services for support at any time. It gives me peace of mind.” For more information regarding Mill Lane Nursing Home’s respite services or to arrange a tour of the home, contact John Savage on 01394 279509 or visit www.healthcarehomes.co.uk Photo: Mr and Mrs McKeown with John Savage, Mill Lane Nursing Home.

Tee Times As the real golfing season approaches and we settle down to watch Opens on the television, try and improve our own golf, play after work in the lighter evenings or start having lessons to learn about our wonderful game, the subject of handicaps is always discussed. For most amateur golfers their sole aim is to get their handicap as low as possible and be able to play to a realistic handicap with a chance of winning some club competitions. And the handicap system is the one thing that makes us all equals out there on the course. It is fair to say that to have a true handicap you have to ensure you enter plenty of qualifying competitions and take the bad rounds with the good, otherwise you could definitely be called a bandit! But it is a good feeling if you are playing off a handicap of 26, for instance, and stand just as good a chance of being in the top three as your partner who is playing off 6. Most clubs have Honours Boards and these are the cream of the competitions that everyone wants to win to ensure their name is written on the board and therefore goes into club history. It is so interesting to look back over the years and see all the names that took part over several generations. When you are a beginner you are asked to play 54 holes to achieve your first handicap (not all at once obviously!) and handicaps have recently been extended to 54 if it is necessary. From wherever you start as you improve and take part in more competitions, that handicap will come down and you will have achieved personal satisfaction. Equally, if you have played a long time and are finding you are not hitting that ball quite so well, your handicap can go up. It is a great leveller. Whatever your handicap, I hope you enjoy this coming summer and play some great golf! Supplied by David Spencer, General Manager

14 RUN 14 FUN

MESSAGE FROM THE ROTARY CLUB Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, will see our 40th Fun Run take place, which is a major fundraising event for our club. This year our chosen main beneficiary will be One for All, a local charity providing opportunities for young people with additional needs, aged 16 to 30 from Suffolk, to attend events. As a club we are expecting several hundred runners to take part, who through their own sponsorship have traditionally provided important funds for local clubs and charities and other worthwhile causes of their choice.

The Rotary Club of Felixstowe

is part of a world-wide organisation and our motto is “Service above Self ”. Our aim is to support local, national and international charities or other needy causes, both financially and with practical help.

The Rotary Club and the participants very much appreciate the generous support that we have always enjoyed from the local community and businesses. A great deal of organisation is required to enable the Fun Run to take place, apart from the members of the Rotary Club of Felixstowe who contribute their free time, I would like to thank the following: Inner

The club would especially like to thank the Felixstowe Freight Club for being our main sponsor and the Spa Pavilion for the use of their facilities this year and in years past. We are also hugely indebted to The Freedom Group without whose invaluable support we would not be able to put on the event. 15 FUN RUN 15

MESSAGE FROM ONE FOR ALL Founded in 2018, One for All is a new registered charity based in Felixstowe. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for young people with additional needs, aged 16 to 30, from Suffolk, to attend events. Young people who have a learning or physical impairment, and/or a mental health condition, often have limited opportunities to access events, that their non-disabled peers may take for granted. There are many reasons, but here are two: they cannot attend due to their access needs, or because the cost of support to attend events makes it unaffordable. One for All aims to provide the means by which all young people can enjoy the same access to events, with their friends, by doing two things: • organising and delivering inclusive events; and • providing grants to young people, their friends and supporters to attend concerts, football matches, shows, and other similar, lifeaffirming experiences. All too often, young people with additional needs miss out on experiences, such as concerts, school proms, and other events, because they are dependent on family, carers or supporters, and costs quickly escalate. Through providing assistance, One for All aims to promote greater independence by enabling young people to attend those events that every other young person attends.

One for All’s next event is a MidSummer Ball on 22nd June, for all young people, their friends or supporters, at The Orwell Hotel, Felixstowe. The live music and entertainment is being led by Suffolk band, 23X. Your support will help to make this evening a night to remember, and provide life-long memories for every young person who attends. All of our events are organised by social work, nursing and social care professionals, with extensive experience of working with disabled young people, in a leadership capacity. The Mid-Summer Ball is being organised in partnership with Achieving Aspirations, an established provider of short breaks for young people with additional needs in Suffolk.

If you know someone who would like to attend, tickets are available from: • Mark on 07983 976484; • One for All, 93 Princes Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7PJ; or • the Achieving Aspirations website: www.achievingaspirations.co.uk

Local Feature Book Worm's Corner

Loving from the Soul by Sarah Caddick I had the pleasure of reading Sarah Caddick's new book of poems, Loving from the Soul this month. The poems flow through some of the local author's most poignant life events, from falling in love and meeting a soul mate to experiencing illness and finding comfort in her faith. As I read through Sarah's book I found myself on a gentle rollercoaster of emotion, laughter and smiles. The poems are beautifully written and are a pleasure to read. Sarah said: "The poems are a journey through some of the highs and lows of my life during the last 25 years. They explore love, relationships, health, illness and spiritual beliefs. I’ve had M.E. for the last 19 years and at times been very restricted in my life. I find poetry is a wonderful therapy for expressing feelings and encouraging healing through finding your own truth. I hope that my writing may resonate with people’s experiences of love and life. Whether it is the thrill of falling in love, the pain of separation or jealousy, the frustration of illness, or the feeling of a deep spiritual peace. Maybe my poems will comfort or inspire you, or just bring a smile to your face,"

Loving from the Soul is available on Amazon at the price of £7.99, you will find it at Stillwater Books in Felixstowe, or you can buy a signed copy direct from Sarah by emailing her at sarah.caddick@googlemail.com A contribution from the sale of each book will go to M.E. Research. Lisa Tyte, Spotlight on Felixstowe Photo by Sarah's partner, Brian.

Felixstowe Family History Society and Felixstowe Museum Felixstowe Family History Society and Felixstowe Museum hold a talk every month with a variety of speakers on a range of topics related to the history of our area. They are lively and informative, full of fascinating facts about our past. This month the title is, From Rural Suffolk and Essex to the Battle of the Somme: the Story of a Nurse in the Great War by Kate Cole. Kate is a local historian with a particular interest in the men and women who took part in the First World War. Kate will be telling us the story of Clara Woolnough who joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment just before the outbreak of the Great War. Clara began her career nursing in small military hospitals in Essex and Suffolk, then in 1916 she was sent to one of the largest military hospitals on the Western Front. Kate gives an interesting perspective of a nurse’s view of the War. The talk will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 8 May at Broadway House, Orwell Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7DD. Members: free, non-members: £1. We look forward to welcoming all visitors. Local Feature We’re all Going on a Summer Holiday (Part 4) After teaching the girl next door to drive Carol and Graham became an item, and driving the Number 155 Routemaster bus from Wimbledon to The Elephant and Castle was proving to be a good earner, but Graham craved adventure and in 1975, whilst at The Earls Court Caravan Show, he bought, well, a caravan!

Graham, Carol and Ian on the Halic bridge in Istanbul

This was the start Carol and Graham needed, so with Graham chucking in the bus driving job and Carol chucking in her job at Woolworths, on Thursday 23 September 1976, together with Carol’s 11 year old son, Ian, they set off from Tooting to Dover with their caravan to see the world. The first 1,200 miles from Ostend to Italy were uneventful, but on arrival at Udine they saw the devastating effect of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake which had hit the area on 6 May 1976. Then, on to Trieste, Yugoslavia, Dubrovnik, with the caravan rattling behind, and then into a different world altogether, Albania. Actually, Albania wasn’t so strange as they loved (Sir) Norman Wisdom! The roads deteriorated seriously over the Kotor Pass and in pitch darkness the intrepid three saw torch lights directing traffic around a large boiler in the middle of the road, and then over a bridge which had no middle! After a very tricky crossing, assisted by plywood over the hole, they made it across and onwards to Athens and a visit to The Acropolis.

After a few days as tourists, on the beach at Thessaloniki, it was on to the Greek/Turkish border with a further deterioration in the roads and infrastructure - far away from the tourist Turkey we know today. The main road from Edirne to Istanbul was the main Customs entry point for Turkey and large volumes of trucks used the road to deliver loads from North Europe to Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Qatar and Yemen, so Carol, Graham and Ian decided to go with the flow and head for English friendly Jordan. They eventually arrived at a campsite in Amman, from where the intrepid three went to the Italian Crusader town of Al-Karak, which is 1,412 feet below sea level. They explored the castle there, which had been in use from 1142 until 1917, before heading off to Aqaba. Graham recalls attempting to cash in some Travellers Cheques in Al-Karak but couldn’t, so the money changer gave him £50 in Jordanian money - the Jordanians were that friendly! Felixstowe Town Council, Suffolk Coastal District Council and Suffolk Coastal Norse have been working together to address play needs in Felixstowe. Three areas have been identified as high priority and are set to be upgraded as part of on-going investment in the area. Gosford Way and Allenby Park will be fully refurbished with a range of items suitable for toddlers, juniors and teenagers. Cavendish Park will gain a MultiUse Games Area aimed at teenagers. The project is expected to commence in June and should be completed in time for the summer holidays. Gosford Way will have all the play equipment replaced with 14 new pieces. In Allenby Park the surface area of the 5-a-side will be replaced and widened, the play area will get five new pieces of equipment as well as multi-unit offering eight different activities. The MultiUse Games Area being installed in Cavendish Park offers a range of leisure activities such as 5-a-side football and basketball. Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, said: “I am very pleased to see these improvements being made to play areas in Felixstowe so that children and youngsters alike can enjoy themselves. Prepare for Hay Fever Season Spring and summer brings new growth, which is a delight to see in nature but it can also bring unwanted symptoms for hay fever sufferers. Hay fever is a type of allergic rhinitis caused by pollen or spores. The condition affects the nose, sinuses, throat and eyes and causes sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes. Hay fever cannot be cured completely, but there are a number of treatments available to relieve the symptoms. These include antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops, with many available over-the-counter in pharmacies.

Protect yourself from symptoms

There are also ways to protect yourself and relieve symptoms naturally. Wrap-around sunglasses help protect the eyes from pollen, a thin smear of Vaseline just inside the nostrils can form a protective barrier to help stop pollen entering the nasal passages, and showering at the end of the day washes pollen from the hair. Itchy, swollen, sore eyes can be soothed with either cotton wool or a flannel rinsed in cold water, and it is also worth keeping some brewed chamomile teabags in the fridge to place over puffy, itchy eyes.

Try this... Beryl Churchman D.O.

Local News New Look for Football Team Felixstowe and Walton U14 girls football team are sporting a smart new look thanks to a local councillor's Enabling Community Budget. The U14s team, which only started up four years ago, has already finished second in their league twice. The game at their age group goes from 7-a-side to 9-a-side and the team has grown to attract new players, making it possible they could go for a full 11-a-side team next season.

The core of the team live and go to school in Felixstowe but recently, there have been new additions from other schools, bringing parents and siblings together. Previously, the girls had to play in miss-matched kit and had few resources for training, until local Suffolk Coastal Councillor, Steve Gallant, stepped in to help using money from his Enabling Communities Budget. “The team has never had any sponsorship and have raised money for kits by packing shopping at Morrisons, holding race nights and raffles at the club,” explained Steve. “Being part of this team gives the girls a good sense of community, representing their club and town in weekly matches is important to them and engages them with the rest of the club. The club has several girls teams and they are looked up to by the younger players. They train every Friday and work hard to keep their fitness levels up. Hopefully, this boost will help bring this team even closer and boost their confidence and self-belief, benefiting the club as a whole.” Steve provided £800 to buy the girls a full kit, as well as waterproof windcheaters for training. Since the launch of the scheme in December 2013, just over £850,000 has been spent supporting some 600 projects across a wide range of new community initiatives. And Then There Were None This June, step into a world filled with mystery and intrigue as Trimley Saints Players produce a dramatic masterpiece. Written by the Grande Dame of Mystery, Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None will keep you guessing until the curtain goes down. Adapted for the stage in 1943, it was a smash hit on the West End and Broadway and is still surprising audiences today - even mystery fans may be stunned to realise the play has two possible endings! Ten strangers are summoned to a remote island. All that the guests have in common is that each carries a past filled with dark secrets. One by one they are accused of past crimes; one by one they begin to meet a gruesome end. With only a nursery rhyme to help them predict the next inventive, grisly murder, the diminishing group must try to discover the identity of the murderer. Who will be the last person standing? 7.30pm performances at Trimley Memorial Hall from Wednesday 19 June to Saturday 22 June. Box Office: 01394 671119.
