A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published! Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments.

BURSTALL SHOW PRIZE WINNERS GO TO MOTO GP As part of their auction prize from this year’s Burstall Show, Rich Harvey and his wife Steph from Holbrook went to Silverstone on Thursday 22 August for the British MOTO GP. On the first day their personalised VIP guest passes included: • a personal tour of the TV compound where they were able to see behind the scenes of the TV production as well as spot a few famous faces • a personal viewing of the MOTO GP Tower of Champions Trophy which isn’t normally accessible to the public • a tour of the MOTO Paddock, where the teams have their hospitality areas, again spotting more famous faces On Saturday they brought their three children for the qualifying rounds and had access to a private box overlooking the pit lane. They were able to get incredibly close to the action and had a wonderful opportunity to get some fantastic close-up photos of the riders as they came into the pits. They were also shown on the ‘live’ TV programme which is something extra special. Later that afternoon, the children were taken into the paddock where they were able to collect lots of memorabilia. Rich returned on Sunday for race day and again had use of the private pit lane box to watch one of the most exciting races of the season so far in which Andrea Dovizioso crashed over the fallen bike of Fabio Quartaroro and his Ducati Desmosedici burst into flames beside the track. The action continued with world champion Marc Marquez battling Alex Rins right up to the last second of the race when Rins crossed the finish line ahead of an astounded Marquez! After enjoying the post-race podium celebrations, Richard thanked their host, Raj Kotecha of Vislink Technologies, for what he described as the best weekend ever! On behalf of Burstall Village Hall Committee, I would also like to express our gratitude to Raj, who has recently moved to Burstall, for his extreme generosity and fantastic hospitality.

SUFFOLK ENERGY-FROM-WASTE
Felixstowe Beach Clean In late August, 18 members of the Suffolk energy-from-waste facility team, along with friends and family, took part in a litter pick along Felixstowe beach and promenade. The sun was shining and the beach was busy, however the team managed to navigate the crowds and collect eight large bags of litter, equating to over 40 kilograms. The most commonly found item was cigarette butts, of which hundreds were collected. The litter pick formed part of the #suez4ocean campaign, a worldwide waste collection initiative on beaches and rivers. The campaign encourages SUEZ employees across the globe to organise beach and waterway clean-ups in their local area. To date, the campaign has mobilised over 1,800 people to collect over 65 tonnes of waste. For more information on the initiative, visit: www.suez4ocean.com. Autumn 2019 Shutdown The facility will be undergoing its second planned maintenance shutdown of the year between 1 and 15 October. These shutdowns take place twice a year for essential cleaning and maintenance, ensuring the facility continues to run efficiently. There will be an increased number of contractors on site during this period, but there should be no impact on the local community. If you have any queries about the shutdown, please contact us via this details provided below. Come and have a look around If you’re interested in finding out what happens to your waste in Suffolk, why not book onto one of our upcoming open days? Places are available on the following dates: October 24 at 4pm, November 14 at 2pm and December 11 at 6pm. There are up to 20 spaces available on each day and pre-booking is essential. Why did he decide to become involved with local politics? He says he has been interested for as long as he can remember and was inspired by an uncle who was a councillor in Yorkshire. Certainly his commitment is undeniable. He is determined that Sproughton should have a voice in an ever-changing world and he wants to be instrumental in helping people, in ensuring that parishioners are informed about issues which are changing our environment, and that they are represented in the wider world of discussion and decision. Above all, he wants Sproughton to be taken seriously, to be treated fairly and not to feel neglected. Those of us who were present at the Joint Local Plan public meeting in the Tithe Barn on September 4 must have been impressed by his eloquence and grasp of the problems which lie ahead. Zac’s column in recent issues of In Touch testify to his determination to look after our community. He is keen to tackle issues which some might think trivial, such as the cutting back of vegetation on the highlevel path from Sproughton towards Ipswich, or the water-splash which has plagued Church Lane for months. Those who have been snagged by brambles along the path or tolerated a flooded road have reason to be grateful for his tenacity. At the other end of the scale he is, along with our other councillors, monitoring development in our parish, whether it be the threat to our environment of nearly 3,000 new houses (1,168 in the village and 1,750 ‘infilling’), or the comparatively minor point of a new pavement opposite the church in Church Lane. He surprised me in saying that the pavement was planned eight years ago, but residents, him included, had only two weeks’ notice that their boundaries would be altered to accommodate the work involved. He cites that incident as an example of local authorities’ unacceptable treatment of our parish. How do people react to his lack of years? “A lot of my friends think I’m mad,” he says. From older parishioners he has received an encouragingly positive reaction. The authorities at Babergh and Suffolk appear to take him seriously, but he suspects they are more likely to try to fob him off and see him as a challenge to overcome. Locally, he is grateful for the support of our parish councillors who listen to what he has to say and make him feel that he fits in. What of the future? Zac enjoys the challenge of being a parish councillor and wants to be increasingly involved. “I like to be busy and, as a young person, I want and need to go the extra mile.” Ideally, he would like to develop a career in local government at county level. If commitment, determination and enthusiasm are to count for anything, he will surely succeed. He certainly deserves to. Ken Sheppard (parishioner)

FROM THE ARCHIVES CHANTRY PARK For hundreds of years, Chantry Park was in Sproughton. In 1927 a builder wanted to buy the land for £15,000 with the idea of building a housing estate. It was announced in the same paper that Lord Woodbridge (Arthur Churchman) who lived at Abbey Oaks, Sproughton, had purchased the Chantry and had offered it to Ipswich as a gift. The Chantry was formally opened by Princess Mary on 20 October 1928. Some of the previous owners of the Chantry had helped in the village with building various dwellings. Sir Fitzroy Kelly had helped fund the houses in Chantry Row, High Street, CB Skinner funded the Reading Room in Lower Street and the Collinsons helped with family matters of the people who lived in the village. On August Bank Holiday Weekend, many thousands came to Chantry Park to see Ed Sheeran and a number of supporting acts. DB

NEWS REPORT FROM ZAC NORMAN District Councillor for Sproughton and Pinewood Firstly, I would just like to thank everyone who came along to the Joint Local Plan public meeting, attended our surgeries and submitted comments to Babergh District Council in regards to the Joint Local Plan. It is thoroughly important that Sproughton’s voice is heard and I have been elected to ensure that this is the case, but having many comments from all of you is a huge help. It seems like I have to report the fiascos going on in Church Lane every month. I have been in contact with Suffolk County Council further regarding the footpath that is being constructed in Church Lane and now unacceptably protrudes into the road. I now know of at least four incidents occurring with this footpath, causing physical damage to cars. This health and safety hazard must be rectified, and I am currently waiting for the construction of the full path for the Stage 3 audit to be carried out which will assess if this path is adequate. I have argued that it isn’t, submitting evidence under reference CR248092. If you have a complaint regarding this path, feel free to raise a complaint with Suffolk County Council by emailing: Highways.DevelopmentControl@suffolk.gov.uk Quote reference CR248092. We are expecting Hopkins Homes to submit a revised application shortly. I will keep everyone updated with progress on this as soon as I hear more. I have been made aware by a few residents that bin collections haven’t been happening as usual. As you will be aware, the bin collection days across Babergh have recently been changed so some of this is to be expected. If your bin is missed, please let me know and I would be happy to report this to public realm. Unfortunately, there has been more fly tipping on Sproughton Road which I have reported to Babergh. John Ward, Leader of Babergh District Council has now confirmed that the proposed merger with Mid Suffolk has been put on hold until 2023 at the earliest after the next local elections. John Ward explained that due to the Joint Local Plan coming out and other priorities taking over, it isn’t something that the council is looking into right now. However, this will still likely come in the future. At the time of writing, a biodiversity motion driven Liz Malvisi, cabinet member for the environment, and I is set to be discussed at the next Babergh District Council full meeting on 24 September. If passed, it will set into motion a number of processes, including a review into wildlife corridors. This is something I am very passionate about, especially living in Sproughton were our corridors need to be preserved. As always, if you have anything, you’d like to raise with me, please don’t hesitate to get in contact. zacharynorman06@gmail.com / 07577 359922
Bumblebee Children’s Charity is a specialist centre in Sproughton, working together with families to support any babies and young children who have physical difficulties with movement and coordination. Specialist trained teachers lead highly structured sensory sessions each week. The children who attend have a wide range of conditions including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, genetic disorders and autism. It’s unique in what it does, which means families travel quite a distance from all over the region. As a parent, Bumblebees was a lifeline to me. After I found out that my daughter had Down syndrome, I simply wanted to give her every opportunity to progress. Bumblebees provided support each week, helping her to learn basic skills with which she struggled. Each session was highly structured and tailored to her needs and I came away each week feeling we had worked hard together to make a difference, with the constant support and encouragement of the staff. It’s such a special place that I have volunteered since she started school. Another parent says, “I have been attending Bumblebees since early 2017 with my son who has Down syndrome. The skills he has developed since starting include huge milestones such as walking, but also other vital skills such as greater concentration and better social awareness. The staff are always so friendly and provide support and advice while helping the children use specialist equipment to improve mobility. It’s a friendly environment and a great opportunity to meet with other families supporting children with additional needs.” We are a charity that depends solely on voluntary donations and funding from people and organisations. Look out for the Manhunt event coming up on Saturday 16 November, 7.30pm at Burstall Village Hall, which will be raising funds for Bumblebees. Please also look out for future articles keeping you up to date with what is happening at Bumblebees. If you are interested in further information, or would like to visit, please contact us on 01473 652822. NEWS SPROUGHTON COMMUNITY SHOP: Something for Everyone Good news! We know you will all have been waiting for the 2020 edition of the Sproughton Calendar, and we are delighted to announce that it is now on sale. It’s full of useful dates for village events, such as the Valentine’s Day do in the church hall, and illustrates just how pleasant it is to be part of this very active village. Unfortunately, at the time of publication the date for the beer festival has not been decided, but since it’s such an important Sproughton event it probably won’t matter too much!
As you all know, the shop is a great asset to the village, and last month we were able to help another great village organisation, Jigsaw Preschool, with purchasing a buddy bench similar to the one we helped THE big school purchase earlier in the year. We hope lots of little people will be happy making friends round it.
English apples will be coming soon too. Our supplier, David Upson in Battisford, grows all sorts of interesting and difficult to find heritage varieties, including Egremont Russets, Pitmaston Pine Apple, Mannington’s Pearmain, and all the old favourites such as Cox’s Orange Pippin. We will have had Discovery from late August. We are very lucky to have access to local growers, and I should mention here that we shall still have late variety strawberries from Lindsey.
The shop now has quite an extensive range of good value stationery so give it a thought next time you need something.
The Family Halloween Disco will take place on Friday 25 October. Tickets will, as usual, be on sale in the shop on a first come first served basis: adults £1, children under-13 50p. Haunting will start at 7pm, with the assistance of Andy’s disco. So if you haven’t already got your ticket, you need to be quick.
We are very lucky to be selling tomatoes which are pesticide free from Sterling Suffolk at Great Blakenham. They taste like proper tomatoes!
Wheaten Mills are now our cake suppliers with some lovely new items. Brexit: I hate to mention the subject, but all retailers, big and small, need to consider how we deal with a possible shortage of items. No one yet knows what this will entail and in a worse case scenario we may have to consider rationing or other measures. More of this when outcomes become clearer. As ever, many thanks to our growing band of volunteers – remember we can never have too many – and to our loyal customers. BURSTALL WI
2019: 4 October, 1 November, 29 November, 27 December
CHRISTMAS WREATH WORKSHOP 2019 Burstall Village Hall, Saturday 30 November from 10am12.30pm & 2-4.30pm Come along and join the fun. This is a great way to start your festive preparations. There will be two sessions again this year due to demand for places. Cost per person is £15. This includes: tuition, a wet foam wreath base, delicious refreshments and any floristry wires or ribbon you may need. You will need to bring a carrier bag full of foliage of your choice, garden scissors and a small sharp knife, plus any decorations you may wish to use. The wreaths are always fabulous and anyone can make them. You will take home an original, stylish decoration for door or table and be the envy of friends and neighbours!
A drumming workshop started off the new season of WI activities with a ‘bang’. With African style drums, and under the instruction of Rachael Bennett, we made an interesting ‘noise’. It soon became obvious who had natural rhythm, but even for those of us who became exhausted trying to keep up, it was a fun evening.
Booking is essential as places are limited. Payment may be made on the day. Please contact Ann Burchnall: 01473 652262 / ann.burchnall@gmail.com
After the excitement of the drumming we were thrilled to hear that Ann Burchnall had won the Suffolk Show Chairman’s Prize for her party girl welded sculpture. This is the second award Burstall WI has won for this year’s show entries and we are now wondering how we can possibly equal the success next year!
Ten per cent of all profit will be donated to the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust at Fen House in Ely.
The next meeting is on Thursday 10 October at 7.30pm in Burstall Village Hall. It will be a craft workshop and visitors are welcome.

Our next meeting is on October 15 when Russell Bowes will give a talk entitled Digging For Victory. As the title suggests, the talk will concentrate on the Second World War years when gardens, great and small, public and private, were transformed into food gardens. Russell will be looking at the role played by the Land Girls who helped put food on the tables of the nation. He will also explore the advice, including propaganda, given to gardeners, both in print and via the radio. On November 19 Peter Lawrence will entertain us with a talk on timber framed buildings in Suffolk and Essex. We meet at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre IP5 1JF at 7.15pm. Visitors (even if not National Trust members) are welcome; the entrance fee is £3. National Trust members and volunteers can join us for £8 per year (£12 per couple at same address). CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL Seventy-four per cent of the 123 students at Claydon High School achieved grade four in both English and Maths. This impressive achievement equals last year’s excellent results. There are many students who have a set of GCSE results to be proud of and which will take them onto their choice of education or training in September. Congratulations to all of our students upon their achievements; we ask each of them to aim to achieve the best that they are capable of and they have certainly done this. We are especially impressed by students who overcame significant personal challenges during their GCSE studies. We will miss all of the students who contributed so much to the school community, including sporting talent, debating success and acting as role models in their student leadership roles. There were successes in many areas across the school including pass rates in the following subjects: Spanish (85%), Biology (96%), Chemistry (98%), Physics (92%), Business Studies (85%), Drama (73%), PE (70%) and English Literature (75%). The maths results were exceptional, as they were last year, with 82% of students passing at Grade 4 or above. Students in School Years 9 and 10 also celebrated excellent results in statistics and further maths. These individual and group achievements reflect the combined efforts of students and their families, teachers and the wider school community, and my congratulations and thanks are extended to everyone who contributed. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new staff, Year 7 students and their parents/carers. We have had a very busy start to the autumn term and I am delighted at how well our new students have settled in. Starting high school is an exciting time and it’s pleasing to see how brilliantly they have adapted to the big changes in their school day and environment. If you would like to know more about our school and were unable to attend the recent open evening, please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders on 01473 836110 to book a place on one of our open mornings in the autumn term. The dates of the next two are Thursday 3 and Monday 7 October. Headteacher Ms M Taylor

These thermally efficient stoves have been used in colder countries for centuries. The heat is retained in the huge mass of the stove which is built from clay lump blocks we’ve made from our own subsoil. We’ve even made our own earth mortar to stick the blocks together, along with a clay render on the outer face of the stove. Better still, our stove will run on the many oak offcuts left over from our framing projects! They stay warm for 24 hours on a single firing.

While we’ve made most of the building materials for our stove, we’ve also had to purchase new readymade items too, such as the lengthy flue, cast fire doors and a myriad of fire bricks that make up the internal channels that circulate hot gases throughout the stove. Long story short, we’ve started a fundraising campaign to help fund these costs.

To support the fundraising campaign, volunteers and supporters of the community project have made and donated items for us to sell. They are crafted by hand from Suffolk trees and make very beautiful and environmentally sound gifts. So with Christmas almost on the horizon we have created a pop-up craft area in the main barn. It will be open from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during October. So, if you like what we do and would like to support our fundraising campaign, do drop in and buy some delightful and unique gifts.

CHURCH NEWS THE NORTH SAMFORD BENEFICE Sproughton with Burstall, Copdock with Washbrook and Belstead & Bentley with Tattingstone For parish queries please contact: The Rev Annette Shannon The Rectory, Glebe Close, Sproughton, Ipswich IP8 3BQ revannettes@aol.co.uk / 01473 807674 Benefice Administrator Hayley Purnell northsamfordbenefice@gmail.com / 07904 972116 Friends, This year my second and third grandchildren were born and the role of grandma I had longed for became even more securely mine. I have been a mum for over 28 years to three children and now have the joy of seeing two of my children raise their own children. But I still remember that becoming a parent was not easy with sleepless nights, worries and a sudden growth in responsibilities with rather dramatic thoughts such as: “It is down to me to keep my baby alive.” For most people being a parent brings such an immense sense of wonder and joy. The first night after my son was born I was unable to sleep because I was filled with such awe. I stayed awake in the silence and darkness of the hospital ward examining his perfect tiny hands and feet, listening with pleasure to his baby noises, just wanting to cuddle and stroke him. I never wanted to be separated from him. He now lives in Singapore so any apron strings have had to extend! This summer I had the pleasure and delight of running a five-week course on spiritual nurture for parents and their babies called Starting Rite. It was designed to offer welcome and support and to build positive relationships between all involved. On the course we explored Christian themes like the mystery of God, God’s unconditional love for us all, the symbols in baptism, prayer and Bible stories. We did this through engaging in activities like peeka-boo, blowing bubbles, splashing in water, baby massage and even sitting in a black out tent with electronic tea lights! It was lovely to see the babies’ responses. There were some lovely conversations with and between the mums, and some special moments. For example, one baby fell asleep when we did a communal reading of Guess How Much I Love You, only to awaken with a cry when we finished, then falling back to sleep when we read it through again. For another baby the chance of catching a glimpse of the other babies meant that she rolled for her first time. Through the course I invited parents to respond to a number of questions including: • How did you choose the name for your baby? • What things do you absolutely love about your baby? • What do you like about being a parent? • What would be the worse choice your child could make in life? • What would be the best choice your child could make in life? The questions opened opportunities for deep discussions. We all have the innate capacity for spirituality from the moment we are born and we never lose that ability no matter how many years we attain. One of the greatest privileges of my role as a rector is drawing close to people at significant times in their lives and parenthood is one of them. My hope is that I am able in some small way to nudge people towards God and open opportunities for his Holy Spirit to work and play in their lives. It is why I feel so very blessed. SERVICES IN THE BENEFICE
SOMERSHAM BAPTIST CHURCH October is dominated by Halloween and is a popular time to celebrate as the nights get longer. But it’s interesting to compare the responses of people to creatures of Halloween, welcomed by both retailers and revellers, but evil spirits are rejected by Jesus as dangerous. Jesus begins his mission with an encounter with Satan and continues his mission casting out evil spirits. In his famous Lord’s Prayer, he includes the line ‘deliver us from the evil one’1 and accomplishes a decisive victory over Satan in his death and resurrection. When the good news of Jesus is accepted in the city of Ephesus there is a bonfire of occult books2. The presence of spiritual personal evil beings opposed to all that is good is a factor to be considered in understanding the trouble and pain of this world. Perhaps Halloween should come with a health warning.

ON THE GRAPEVINE PERSONAL FINANCE WITH NICK PLUMB Do you value your life? Most people take out insurance for their home contents and their buildings and have motor insurance to protect their cars. Some people even have insurance for their pets, but more than 60 per cent of the people I meet as a financial adviser do not have enough life insurance in place to properly protect their family if they die prematurely. Unfortunately, life insurance is one of those products that the majority of people don’t have just when it is needed most. And if you don’t have it when you need it – it’s already too late to do anything about it. Taking out life insurance is something that many people are quite unsure about, typically prompting questions like; “How much cover do I need?”, “How long do I need it for?” and “How much will it cost?”. The following is intended to answer some of the questions you may have, and will hopefully persuade you to contact a financial adviser to review your own insurance arrangements sooner rather than later. Do I need life insurance? If you have an outstanding mortgage or if you have dependent children, you need life insurance. It’s that simple. If you bring an income into the household, or if you care for children who are financially dependent upon you, then there will be a financial cost to your family if you die. If the main ‘bread winner’ dies, their salary will have to be replaced. If the partner who cares for your children dies, their duties will have to be taken up by someone who will need to be paid for their services, so that their partner can continue to work and earn. If you have an outstanding mortgage, having insurance that pays off the mortgage will not only ensure that your family will have a roof over their heads, but will also save your spouse or partner the cost of monthly mortgage repayments – usually one of your biggest financial commitments each month. How much will it cost? The cost of life insurance depends on two factors: How much cover you need, and how long you want the cover to last for. Factors such as your age, sex, occupation, health condition and whether you smoke or not are all taken into account when calculating how much your insurance
will cost. This is called the ‘underwriting’ process. The important thing to remember is that it need not cost the earth and getting a quote costs nothing. How much life cover do I need? If you’re the main breadwinner, you will obviously want to maintain your family’s lifestyle so that they do not encounter any financial hardship. If you care for children or other dependents, then your partner will need to provide cash for professionals to take over your role. As a guide, the figure should be enough to replace around 80 per cent of your net earnings (you will be entitled to some state benefits) or at least £20,000 for professional child care each year. How long for? I would normally recommend family protection lasts until the youngest child is aged 21 years, which ensures that your children will have the opportunity to go through university and will reach financial independence. For a mortgage, you should protect the whole of the outstanding term of the loan. Where do I buy it from? To ensure you get the very best deal, you should always take independent financial advice when buying life insurance. Never trust a bank or building society to give you the best deal on your life insurance or mortgage protection, unless their adviser is independent and has searched the entire marketplace for you. Banks and building societies are usually tied to one company or a small group of companies, and that means that they rarely offer the best premium rates for life insurance. Take my Insurance Challenge and save yourself some cash today! If you have a life insurance policy or mortgage protection policy that was arranged for you by your bank or building society, or by an adviser tied to one company, I am confident that in at least 90 per cent of cases, I will be able to find you a policy that offers the same or better benefits for a lower monthly cost. Just give me a call or e-mail me with the policy details (the amount of cover, policy term, and premium, and your date of birth and smoking status) and I will call you back with a free no-obligation quote.
