A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Mother Nature is having quite an impact on my life right now, mostly positive, but not entirely! I’m looking after grandma’s chickens for a few days while she’s away. It’s not difficult: put them in, let them out, give them some grain… job done. Except not this time! Last night one of them went missing and I found myself clucking around the garden for about an hour in torrential rain trying to find her. I can only image how ridiculous I looked but I most certainly wasn’t laughing. Of course I didn’t find her so spent a restless night wondering how to tell grandma that Blossom was done for. When I went to let the others out this morning, there she was waiting for me in all her glory, perfectly dry, well-rested and seemingly happy. A bit too happy for my liking! Meanwhile, back at home a mummy blackbird (I’ve called her Maralyn because she’s very beautiful) has taken up residence under the roof of our little outdoor lean-to, a place I like to sit with a book when the weather allows. She’s busily feeding four babies, constantly flying back and forth all day long. I must say I admire/envy her energy and it is a rather beautiful thing to see, but she’s making my garden a no-go area as every time I open the door she abandons her chicks and sits on the wall until I leave. I imagine she’s sitting there muttering “here she comes again… what is it this time… can’t she see I’m busy… what is she wearing?”. I end up feeling guilty for invading ‘her’ space so I retreat indoors and leave her to it. I haven’t even put the bins out this week because I’m afraid to scare her away. How would I cope with four baby blackbirds? Not very well I suspect. I don’t suppose she and her babies will be there for very long and despite the inconvenience (and the mess, but let’s not go there right now) I’m glad we have given them a safe place to hatch. I do love living in the countryside. Even those of us who live in Suffolk towns and villages are never far from a wide open space and a big sky view. We really are incredibly lucky and when better weather lands, as surely it must, I hope you have the opportunity and the means to get about to explore or simply admire our surroundings. You may not have to go very far, unless your garden is out of bounds too!

GIRLGUIDING IN STOWMARKET Girlguiding UK launched an exciting new programme last year and all Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger groups in Stowmarket have embraced the new initiatives and challenges and have been gaining skills and badges which are fun and relevant for girls and young women in the 21st century. Camping and enjoying the outdoors is still a highlight for so many girls, but we also learn about such things as online safety, having a voice and being actively involved in recycling. Recently girls have been trying their skills at archery, seeing police dogs in action and learning about which tools to use for which job. There are groups for girls aged from five to 18 years meeting on different days all around Stowmarket. If you know of anyone who would like to join us and be part of this wonderful organisation that gives us so many opportunities, get in touch with Stowmarket District Commissioner Anne Richardson on 07974 360328 or register online at: www.girlguiding.org.uk Rainbows: age 5-7 / Brownies: age 7-11 Guides: age 10-14 / Rangers: age 14-18

SALVATION ARMY CHARITY MOTORBIKE RIDE Despite the awful weather on Saturday, June 8, more than 20 bikers turned out to support the annual Stowmarket Salvation Army Charity Motorbike Ride. Organisers this year were worried about the weather conditions, so were delighted by the support shown on the day. Marshalls and riders braved the rain and wind to have an enjoyable morning in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, welcomed back with hot coffee and a delicious BBQ. A total of £280 was raised which will be used to help purchase a defibrillator, a vital piece of equipment to help save lives. If you require any details about the annual ride, please contact: jenny.johnson@salvationarmy.org.uk

Stowmarket is a growing town and the council has ambitious plans for it, so I look forward to playing my part as mayor in helping to promote those plans and make Stowmarket an even better place to live, work and play.” During his speech, Paul announced the theme for his mayoral year would be Youth & Unity and that he would be raising funds for The Mix and We Can. STOWMARKET BELLS UPDATE Our summer activities continue with an appearance at Stowmarket Carnival with the Suffolk Guild ‘mini-ring’. A mini-ring is a peal of small bells hung for change-ringing. They are used for training, demonstrations and leisure purposes. They are easy to use by both adults and children and we’ll be on hand to offer instruction, advice and information about ringing. Come and have a go! We will be at the recreation ground on Saturday 20 July, so come and find us there. We look forward to seeing you. COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING DEFIBRILLATOR PROJECT Stowmarket Royal William Pub’s community fundraising has raised just over £2,000 since October to install a community access defibrillator in a cabinet on the outside wall of the pub in Union Street, East Stowmarket. Access to the defibrillator is by dialling 999 and the ambulance service will give out the code to open the cabinet door. Thanks must go to all the customers for putting their hands in their pockets and to those that gave generous grants or donations: Dave Muller (Mid-Suffolk District Council Locality Budget), Gary Green (Suffolk County Council Locality Budget), Stowmarket Royal Naval Association, private donation and DS Mead Builders for supplying the labour to install the cabinet. The fundraising group is now raising a bit more for the project to be able to buy new pads and batteries which will be needed in the coming years. NEEDHAM MARKET SOCIETY In May we spent a gripping evening on the edge of our seats as archaeologist Alex Fisher unfolded the story of the recent excavations which discovered the collapsed but complete Bronze Age Village built on the ancient waterway at Flag Fen in Cambridgeshire. The workmanship and artefacts discovered showed a surprising level of sophistication with carpentry tools, cutting equipment, some weaponry and even some very fine woven cloth found preserved in the sediment. Alex allowed us to handle some replicas of the tools: bronze arrow and spear heads, a surprisingly sharp toothed saw, and some wooden mortis joints. We were all fascinated. Our summer visit on the afternoon of 19 July will take us to see the magnificent painted roof at Huntingfield Church in East Suffolk. The original medieval roof paintings were ‘traditionally revived’ in the 19th century by the artistic wife of the incumbent vicar. You can drive there yourself or there is the possibility of a lift. There is a £5 fee for this member’s only occasion. Membership of the society is £7.50 annually. Please get in touch with Jennifer for further details if you would like to go: jenniferfnott@btinternet.com / 01449 720545

STOWMARKET CRAFT MARKET June brought us a bright sunny morning, which led to a busy footfall through the door as soon as we opened. In fact we had to open ten minutes earlier as we had customers ready and waiting to come in! Thank you to all our customers for your support, without you our events wouldn’t be worth continuing month after month. We are pleased to be able to offer local crafters a place to regularly sell their makes. For those who want to support the community and small businesses, this is a great way to do that. July offers two other opportunities to visit us. Our next event is on 6 July. In addition to this we are also going to be on the Recreation Ground on both Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July at Stowmarket Carnival. If you’ve not yet been to our events this will be a small glimpse of what is available every month, so make sure you pop over to our gazebos during the carnival weekend. Stowmarket Craft Market is held at Stowmarket Scout Centre, Milton Road, Stowmarket IP14 1EX (located behind the library) from 10am-1.30pm. Entry is free with refreshments provided by the Scouts fundraising committee. Contact Sherilee Hawkins: stowmarketartisanmarket@gmail.com

Our meetings are usually held once every two months in Needham Market Community Centre at 7.30pm. After the summer break, our AGM is on September 25 and we will host popular speaker Pip Wright whose topic this time is The Ricking Hall Poachers. Membership renewal is £7.50, visitors £3 on the night. For further details please phone Andrea: 01449 721056

STOWMARKET FREEMASONS Phoenix Lodge No 516 donated £4,000 to several local charities at a presentation event held at the lodge in Violet Hill Road on Saturday, May 11. The charities at the presentation were: AJ’s Legacy (Martin James), Bosmere Community Primary School (Rachael Tunbridge), Cancer Blossom Appeal (Brian Taylor), South Central and East Suffolk MS Society (Helen Mead) and Phoenix Counselling Practice (Grant Wright). Four other charities that were unable to attend have had their cheques presented to them at their respective offices. There were Stowmarket ATC (Flt Lt Paula Houghton RAF VR(T), Officer Commanding 1331 Stowmarket) Sqn Air Training Corps), Bumblebee Children’s Charity (William Petersen), Macmillan Nurses Home Visitors (Angelika Rohing) and Success after Stroke (Viv Bourne & Bryan Moss). OUT & ABOUT OPEN GARDEN AND GIANT PLANT SALE THE REGAL IN JULY DISPLAY OF MINIATURE HOUSES Sunday, July 14, 11am-5pm At Woodstock, Park Road, Combs IP14 2JS £3 in aid of David Hopgood Foundation and Papworth Hospital

BILDESTON SUMMER MARKET Bildeston will be hosting an even bigger market in July, to make the most of the (hopefully) good weather. Come rain or shine on Saturday 20 July, the indoor market will be complemented by an outdoor table-top/car-boot sale selling a large variety of goods.

The project to grow the Regal is really gathering pace and on 21 July between 11am and 1pm we’re excited to invite everyone to see our plans on the big screen and speak to members of the design team and project sponsors about the expansion. So much of this work is about safeguarding the future of the venue, so to that end, later that day we’re hosting a free screening of The Secret Life of Pets 2 when instead of the adverts we’ll be playing a short video, giving the lucky ticket holders a sneak peak at our plans. Whether or not you can attend either of these events on 21 July, we’d still love you to fill in our questionnaire, giving your opinion on the future of your Regal. Yesterday: A struggling musician realises he’s the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles after waking up in an alternate timeline where they never existed. Film makers Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis chose East Anglia for much of the filming. 1 hour and 56 minutes The Secret Life of Pets 2: Continuing the story of Max and his pet friends, following their secret lives after their owners leave them for work or school each day. 1 hour and 26 minutes X-Men: Dark Phoenix: Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world. 1 hour and 53 minutes

Come along to browse stalls selling cakes, crafts, gifts, food, beauty products, jewellery, homewares and second-hand goods to name just a few! Our outdoor area overlooking the bowls green provides the perfect place for some al fresco dining, while we also have a lovely indoor cafe area if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Refreshments will be available all day, with tea, coffee, bacon butties and hot dogs at very reasonable prices.

Men in Black: International: The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organisation. 1 hour and 55 minutes

With free entry, plenty of free on-site parking and an adventure playground on site, this event will have something for all the family. If you have some goods to sell and are interested in having a stall, please contact Jayne at: Chamberlin.indoormarket@gmail.com

Booksmart: On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realise they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night. 1 hour and 42 minutes

STOWMARKET CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2019 will see our 15th Christmas Tree Festival and we are pleased to announce a special celebration. As well as Christmas trees in St Peter & St Mary’s Parish Church, Stowmarket Library and Abbots Hall in The Museum of East Anglian Life, there will be trees decorated in the garden at Red Gables. This will add a new and exciting dimension to Stowmarket Christmas Tree Festival which last year had 450 trees and attracted over 31,000 visitors, making it one of the region’s largest winter attractions. The festival will be open from Friday 22 November to Saturday 4 January. Once again we are inviting all groups, organisations, businesses, charities and schools in the town, as well as individuals, friends and families to take part and decorate a tree. The trees are provided free of charge, but we ask that you provide your decorations to fit in with the theme of the venue. There are a limited number of trees so we advise that you apply to decorate a tree in good time. If you are interested in being part of this community event and would like to know more or would like an application form, do get in touch from July 1. The themes and contact details for this year are: Stowmarket Parish Church – Carols and Christmas Verse 01449 774652 / stowmarket.parish@btconnect.com

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET OPERATIC & DRAMATIC SOCIETY Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society are taking a trip back to the Wild West this summer as they stage a production of the hit musical Calamity Jane at the Regal Theatre in Stowmarket. Trouble arises in Deadwood City when Henry ‘Millie’ Miller, proprietor of The Golden Garter, promotes a beautiful actress named Frances Fryer, unaware that Frances is actually a man! Cue Calamity and her associate ‘Wild’ Bill Hickock having to keep the peace among the angry miners, and soon Calamity is on her way to Chicago to recruit genuine heart-throb Adelaide Adams. The situation grows worse, however, when Calamity mistakes Adelaide’s maid, Katie Brown, for the star herself! Featuring many classic numbers such as Windy City, The Black Hills of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage and, of course, Secret Love – made famous by the late Doris Day – the show is sure to delight audience members of all ages. The production is particularly poignant for the society and Jo Chadwick, the director, as the last SODS production of Calamity Jane in 1971 featured Jo’s father Ray Haslam as Wild Bill Hickock. Ray sadly passed away earlier this year. As a member of SODS for more than 50 years he fulfilled a vast number of roles during his time with the society, both on and off the stage. Jo hopes this year’s production will serve as a fitting tribute to him. Ray isn’t the only link to the past from the show, as David Dodson – himself a long-time member of the society – also featured in the original production as Francis Fryer. This time around, David is bringing his vast stage experience to the role of the Colonel of Fort Scully. Join Calamity (played by Sarah Roberts), Bill Hickock, Francis Fryer and many more for a rootin’, tootin’, guns-a-blazin’ musical extravanganza! Calamity Jane runs at the Regal Theatre in Stowmarket from 17-20 July. Tickets are available from the Regal Box Office on 01449 612825 or from: www.regalstowmarket.co.uk For more information visit: www.stowmarketoperatic.org.uk

STOWMARKET CONCERT BAND We kicked off our 2019 public performance season with a couple of events under a new format. First was our Showcase Concert where our training band (and smaller ensembles within it), our newly formed Brass Dectet, and our trombone choir showcased our versatility. There were some great performances. The trainees are developing well and are able to make a fantastic stab at some quite complex ‘main band’ music. Brass Dectet showed off some music from their wedding programme as well as some jazz, big band and classical choices. The trombones treated us to some great pieces including a glimpse of some they’ve prepared for our series of Oompah events this year. A few days later, the sold-out Oompah Beer Night featuring our main band went down a storm, with great music, entertainment, traditional bratwurst and Bavarian dishes and beer! We are lucky to have excellent support from our groupies, but this event saw very many new faces coming into our audience, giving great feedback from their huge enjoyment of the night. We can now confirm that four more Oompah events have been booked for later in the year by those in the audience that night! A selection of our public events in 2019 June 29: Palmer’s Haughley Funday July 7: Stowmarket Food & Drink Festival July 20: Stowmarket Carnival August 3: Bacton Fayre August 25: Oulton Broad Bandstand September 7: Jeffries Oompah September 13 & 14: Gresham’s Oompah October 12: Needham Market Oompah October 19: Needham Market Parish Church November 9: RBL Festival of Remembrance at Regal Theatre November 30: Combs Christmas Fayre December 4: Christmas Tree Festival December 14: URC Christmas Concert For a complete schedule please visit our website or Facebook page.

OUT & ABOUT FOUR REASONS YOU NEED NUTRITION SUPPORT The world of nutrition is full of myths, fallacies and fads, making it an incredibly difficult area to understand. Many people believe and push their own methods, deeming themselves an expert because they eat, like everyone else. However, what needs to be understood is that one size does not fit all. Every individual has his or her own goals, preferences, lifestyle and barriers that should be considered when making nutrition recommendations. Nutrition needs to be tailored for each individual. If you take part in a sport or physical activity, optimal nutrition can not only enhance your performance considerably on competition days, but it is also crucial for pushing your training, fitness and adaptations to the next level.

STOWMARKET CHORALE Stowmarket Chorale performed their summer concert, Shakespeare Meets Jazz, at the United Reformed Church in Stowmarket in June. It was a refreshing blend of songs and sonnets by Shakespeare, set for four-part voices and performed in a jazz style with Samuel Hollis playing double bass and Thomas Hawkes on piano. Various passages from works by Shakespeare were read and recited by Henry Stanford and Jamie Glasse from Earl Stonham Theatre Guild. For something completely different, we are hosting a dog show at Rattlesden Pavilion on Saturday 27 July, 10am-4pm. There are many classes, and the day is aimed to be a fun day out for you and your pet. For further details contact Lucy at: lucy@luphen.co.uk / 01359 240676 We then have a summer break and will return for rehearsals to Combs Ford Primary School on Wednesday 18 September, meeting at 7.30pm. For further details contact: secretary@stowmarketchorale.org.uk / 07901 758009

If you are looking to loose weight, improve your health and give yourself a better chance to live for longer, the same principles apply – the quality, quantity and type of what goes in will dictate what you will get out of life. How can you achieve this? By getting the basics right. The basics in nutrition go such a long way. A lot of people think that sports nutrition is all about what supplements I can take to help me win. In fact, there are only around five supplements that are recommended, but they are only the cherry on the top. Correctly eating to fuel your training and recovery day to day can have a much bigger impact than your supplement protocol. Again for those wanting weight loss and healthier bodies, quick fix diets and supplements rarely work and can take you down a bad nutritional path.

CLASSIC CAR & MOTORBIKE AUTOJUMBLE Stowmarket Town Football Club Sundays, August 11 and October 6 £5 per stand, £10 trade. Free entry for children, raffle, refreshments and a licensed bar. RIVER GIPPING TRUST

The Nutrition Hierarchy The nutrition hierarchy shows you the importance day-to-day eating can have on your nutrition. You should be asking yourself these questions: •

Am I eating to fuel myself for my training, competition, work, life events?

Am I eating to recover well from my training, competition, work, life events?

Am I staying hydrated?

Am I getting plenty of vitamins and minerals into my diet?

Am I eating at the correct times to help promote my recovery, performance, work, life events?

Am I eating correctly to support my desired body composition?

With the help of a qualified nutritionist, you can become educated in answering the above questions, as well as being taught how to implement them into your lifestyle. Oliver Whiteman MSc BSc SENr HCPC Performance and Health Nutritionist PhysioFixx Physiotherapy Clinic

It’s that time of year when Himalayan Balsam starts appearing along the River Gipping. Himalayan Balsam is a non-native, invasive plant species which grows so quickly that it crowds out native wildflowers. Clearing Himalayan Balsam benefits both native plants and animals. Its stems are easy to pull out and leave the ground with a very pleasing ‘pop’ which makes it a fun family activity. We are seeking volunteers both young and old to help remove the plants along the river before it has a chance to go to seed. Volunteers are being asked to take just five minutes out of their walk to pull up the stems, snap off the root and stomp down on it to speed up the rotting process. It has reddish stems and pink-purple flowers. Our volunteers have already removed thousands this year, but there are millions left! For a free information pack and free gloves visit: www.waterways.org.uk/himalayanbalsam Later into July and August the trust is planning a major restoration project at Pipps Ford lock. To complete the lock structure, ready for lock gates, we need to install a temporary steel piling just in front and just behind the lock so that we can pump out all the water in the lock between the two steel pilings. We need the lock empty to make provision for the easy installation and removal of stop planks so the Environment Agency can better manage the river levels and flows. The trust has installed stop plank facilities at each of the four locks between Needham Market and Baylham. Pipps Ford is the only lock in this stretch of the river that has no flow control facility. You’ll find work progress photos and more information on Himalayan Balsam on our Facebook page. www.Rivergippingtrust.org.uk

The day started at the Fitzwilliam Museum where we were able to view many historical collections from around the world. After working up our appetites we made the short journey to the Orchard Tea Garden at Grantchester, famous for its connection with Rupert Brooke and his poem The Soldier.

STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Wednesday, July 3: Short AGM (starting at 7.30pm) and talks by members Neil Langridge will speak about hop cultivation in the Stowmarket area and Marion Harris will describe Margaret Catchpole’s schoolbook, a revealing look at early 20th century home economics. Wednesday, August 7: Hands on History by Duncan Allen Duncan Allen gives an inspirational talk about this project in Tunstall Forest. It offers day visits and overnight stays for visitors aged seven and upwards, allowing students the chance to learn about their heritage and experience how people in the past overcame the challenges of living and working together as a community. We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall IP14 4BQ where there is plenty of space to park. Visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members.

Following an enjoyable lunch we spent the afternoon at Cambridge University Botanic Garden. This is a truly splendid garden and is highly recommended for anyone able to visit. WOMEN’S SECTION ROYAL BRITISH LEGION, STOWMARKET There was a change to our May meeting as our planned speaker was unwell and some of our members were away on a group holiday, including Sue, our chairlady. So our previous chairlady, Hazel, stepped in and gave the exhortation and silent tribute. Hazel confirmed that our jumble sale will be held at Hillside on September 28. Sue had worked hard to give us three quizzes to do. The first was jumbled up towns and villages in Suffolk, the second was clues and a word search to find street names in Stowmarket, and the third was to find the nine letter word and then make as many words of three letters or more with each word containing the middle letter T. The silence was notable as groups set about finding the answers. It was a fun evening and there were gasps when the answers were given, especially the jumbled up towns and villages as some didn’t get the place they lived in. Muriel, Janet B and Lynda came first and were given some chocolates as a prize. There are always back-ups in the event that a speaker is unable to come, so maybe Sue will do another quiz like that again for us. Thank-you Sue. There followed the raffle and the singing of the National Anthem. We are hoping that we can get the same speaker for our meeting on 17 July, if she is well enough by then. Lynda Farr

STOWMARKET BRANCH Since our last report we have been to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft. We were taken on a hangar tour with a very knowledgeable guide. In May a group of our members and friends enjoyed a nice holiday on the Isle of Wight. Looking ahead now, we will be visiting the Thursford Collection where we will have a behind the scenes tour. Afterwards we will be going on to Wells next the Sea. In July we are planning to go to Lowestoft and then on to Oulton Broad for a two-hour Waveney Valley river cruise. We are also booked to visit the Kelvedon Secret Bunker, built in the early 1950s to offer a safe place for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, including the prime minister. It would have been used in the event of a nuclear attack. At our August meeting we will be having a bring-and-buy stall, with the proceeds going towards the buffet at our Christmas meeting. We are always pleased to welcome new members. We meet on the first Wednesday in the month at the Royal British Legion Club at 7.30pm. Welcome to the 58th Stowmarket Carnival, a wonderful opportunity to join together to celebrate our fabulous town and to have lots of fun. My name is Jayne Woods. This is my third year as chairperson, ably assisted by the team of dedicated people pictured below. They are a great bunch of people who have come together to bring you this year’s carnival and I think you will agree that we have found something for everyone. We have free children’s entertainment both days and the Carnival Market is jam-packed with various stalls. We are thrilled to have a variety of performances over the weekend. On Saturday we have Shane Baxendale and The Korrados, bRAVO School of Rock and The Skittlez. On Sunday we have performances from Chelsea Francis and New Life Church. The Carnival Dog and Pet Shows will take place on the Sunday and we also have the Carnival Car and Motorbike Show. Of course, the Carnival Procession is a major part of the carnival and we hope you’ll come out to show your support. This year’s theme is FILMS and the procession will leave PPG Car Park at 12.30pm on Saturday, July 20th, arriving at the Recreation Ground at approximately 2pm. Stowmarket Carnival is a non-profit organisation and is totally funded by donations and fundraising throughout the year. Please remember Carnival Bingo is the first Saturday of every month at Hillside Community Centre, Stowmarket. We have spent many hours organising this year’s carnival and have called upon local businesses to donate money. We hope you enjoy your weekend, because without your support and encouragement our carnival could not happen. We thank you all and hope you enjoy your weekend. And don’t forget the Window Spotting competition which runs from July 1st-22nd. Good luck!

OUT & ABOUT STOWMARKET & DISTRICT MONDAY CLUB The club continues into the summer with a new programme of events. Our AGM has been held with all officers and committee members re-elected.

STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB Our May meeting was well attended with members keen to welcome Liz Ungless back to show us how to make and assemble a royal iced gazebo, a superb top piece for a very special cake. Liz is well known for her expertise using royal icing and this demonstration highlighted her skill.

We have planned a themed craft evening with the items made being used the following week for our Pirates & Castaways Evening. We will also have music and food for this fun evening.

Old members enjoyed seeing something they perhaps hadn’t done for a long, while newer members enjoyed seeing something quite new to them as royal icing has been a bit out of favour recently but appears to be enjoying a revival. This is excellent news as it’s a real skill to master.

We also have games and indoor bowls, a bingo session and our version of Play Your Cards Right. It should be a busy month for us.

It was a huge thank you to Liz for a very good demonstration and for sharing her wide knowledge with us and making it all look so achievable.

We are a club for adults with learning difficulties and meet each Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at the Community Hub in Crown Street, Stowmarket. We are run entirely by volunteers and new members and helpers are always very welcome. If you would like further information, please contact me on 01449 672123 or just come along on a Monday evening.

Our June speaker was Gemma Parker from Gemma’s Crafty Cakes in Felixstowe. Gemma showed us how to make the cupcake toppers that won her a silver prize at Cake International in Birmingham. A brilliant and amusing evening as always when Gemma visits.

Our speaker in July is Natasha Collins of Nevie-Pie Cakes, a new demonstrator to our club. Her subject is painting on sugar. Having seen some of her work recently, I was amazed at the beautiful cakes and we look forwards to welcoming her next month. RIGHT TO WORK CHECKS In continuing the Employment Law theme from last month, in this article I thought that we would look at, by way of reminder, what obligations there are on an employer to conduct checks to prevent illegal working. This is important for an employer, because it amounts to a criminal offence for an employer to employ someone who that employer knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is an illegal worker. The law therefore imposes a duty on employers to obtain an employee’s original identity documents – which are listed in guidance issued by the Home Office. An employer must check that the documents are valid – and this must be done in the presence of the employee. A copy must be kept and a record of the date of the check made. As with all personal data, the copy documents must be kept securely. When checking the documents, an employer must ensure that they are genuine, original and unchanged – and, of course, belong to the person who is to be employed.

www.keepingintouchwith.com/stowmarket

Employers should also be aware that the government has issued guidance on employing EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, and their family members, after Brexit. The right to work checks should be carried out in the same way as now until 1 January 2021. This is done by the worker showing a passport or national identity card, or by allowing the employer to use the Home Office’s online right to check service. This does not apply to Irish citizens, who continue to have the right to work in the UK after Brexit and will be able to prove this as now by showing a passport. The overall system is, at present, due to change on 1 January 2021, for which no doubt new guidance will be issued at the appropriate time.

ST PETER & ST MARY’S PRE-SCHOOL This term we have been discovering wild animals and looking at what pets we all have. The children have enjoyed bringing in photos of their pets to show everyone. So with all these animals to discover, what better place to visit than the zoo! All the children and their parents or carers had a wonderful, if a little soggy day at Banham Zoo. We started with an exciting coach journey and then wandered around looking at snow leopards, owls, flamingos and some very tall giraffes to name but a few. The children were mesmerised. Next more excitement as it was all aboard the road train for a tour around the zoo, which helped to recharge our batteries. A good day was had by all with some very sleepy children and adults on the coach home.

WOOD LEY PRIMARY SCHOOL On Friday 7 June the whole school were invited to come into school dressed up as a king, queen or world leader from any point in time. Throughout the day each key stage looked at some famous kings and queens from British history, as well as talking about world kings and queens too. Various history-based activities were held throughout the day, focusing on special historical vocabulary and really fostering an enjoyment of the subject. In addition to classroom based activities, children had a special ‘Banquet Lunch’ provided by our Norse Catering team which was enjoyed by all. Following this the children took part in a parade through the school in their costumes. Everyone enjoyed this special historical themed day of learning.

SPORT STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB

NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUB

With the season well under way, both adult Saturday X1s have secured important victories, the recent highlight being Dale Watling’s 107 against Copdock.

The Stowmarket League outdoor season is now in full swing with the usual set of mixed results. Monday A had a great start with three wins in four games, while the B team had their first win at Woodfield. Tuesday A played seven and won four, while the B team played and won one and the C team played seven and won four.

With an early start in March, we have been able to hold 11 very successful junior coaching sessions. Our thanks go to our coaches and volunteers for their unpaid commitment to the support of this vital section.

Two highlights come to mind. The first was our under-9 mini-festival when teams from Woolpit, Battisford, Stowupland and Walsham joined us for a morning of exciting and enjoyable competitive soft ball cricket. The second was an encouraging win by just two runs in the first round of the Under-11 Suffolk Cup against near neighbours Woolpit. As part of the World Cup of men’s cricket currently being played in England and Wales, the ECB has offered a funding partnership to encourage more people to watch or participate in cricket. I am pleased to say that we have been awarded a grant to purchase a BBQ, four park tables, two park benches and a gazebo. BARBECUE EVENING – ALL WELCOME To promote the game and use the equipment that we have purchased, we plan to hold a BBQ evening on Monday 1 July, starting at 6pm. As well as our normal youth coaching taking place, the bar will be open with screening of the Sri Lanka versus West Indies match. In addition, there will also be side attractions such as lawn bowling on the square and golf chipping into a bucket. Please do come along with your family and friends to support this occasion and have fun. We are pleased that Stowmarket CC will be entering a team in this year’s Lions Charity Cycle Ride on Sunday 25 June with all proceeds going to Macmillan and The Lions Club Charities.

NEW STOWUPLAND FALCONS TEAMS Stowupland Falcons Under-15s Stowupland Falcons are looking to create a brand new Under-15 team for the 2019/20 season to play on Sundays. We are looking for a manager to lead this new team as well as new players. We have already had interest from some players wishing to join this age group and we are looking for more. So, if you are interested in managing the team or in playing Under-15, please contact our chairman, Peter Mayhew as soon as possible. Stowupland Falcons Under-18s Stowupland Falcons are also creating a new Under-18 team to play on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the Suffolk Youth League and we are looking for extra players to add to our current Under-16s who are moving up. This team is being created to act as a pathway into our Adult Reserve and First teams to ensure we create a succession plan for future years. The manager of this new team has years of experience in coaching Under-18 teams and has coached at Crewe Alexandra’s Academy until he moved into the area this year. This is a great and unique opportunity for players who are looking to develop their knowledge of the game and to start moving into adult football. If you are interested please contact Peter Mayhew: 07421 091060 / petermayhew7874@gmail.com Stowupland Falcons is an FA Charter Standard Community Club and we operate 20 teams across five leagues in Suffolk.

The Wednesday team have started strongly in defence of their title, winning five of their seven games for 33 points. Our Thursday team is enjoying their bowling and hoping for an improvement on last year’s results. We have become a wildlife friendly bowls club! Inspired by Amazing Grace Hedgehog Sanctuary, one of whose main sponsors is Dr Brian May, we have installed a hedgehog escape ramp thanks to John Cook. Photos have also gone to Poppy’s Creche at Forward Green who I believe have passed them on to the East Anglian Daily Times. Amazing Grace commented: “We Love Your Ramp”. Sunday 21 July is President’s Day, when the president’s team plays a captain’s team, with teams drawn on the day. The friendlies against Coney Weston are on Wednesday 28 August at Coney Weston and Wednesday 4 September at Needham. Both start at 2pm. The draw for the club pairs and triples has been made; please consult the noticeboard to see who you are playing with and against. A date for the finals day has yet to be arranged. Any suggestions for events to fill up the day should be forwarded to Alistair. Suggestions have including a Roving Jack or a singles competition. You need to do something to earn your bacon sarnies! Anyone wishing to discuss any aspect of NMBC can contact either Alistair Bailie on 01449 720759 or Pat Hadden 01473 831308.

STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB As I type we’re just into the first days of the French Open. Kyle Edmund and Joanna Konta are both through, which is very promising. The big one to really catch people’s attention is Wimbledon which starts on July 1. All the usual suspects are expected to be there and even Andy Murray should make an appearance in the doubles. Our own annual tournament has just begun with the first round matches being arranged. There are lots of interesting draws with many new players getting stuck into some fun competitive play. A great entry again this year and definitely some surprises on the horizon. We’re making plans to take tennis out into the local community and have a few dates coming up. Our big annual open day will be on Sunday 7 July. It’s a great afternoon to come down and try a bit of fun tennis with a little bit of coaching for the children and a chance to have a really good look at our club. We’ll be at the Museum of East Anglian Life on Sunday 28 July where we will have a demo area for mini-tennis with some games and hitting over a mini-net. Pick-up some info from the club (which is only 200 meters away). We’ll also be at Buxhall Fete on Saturday 3 August, another favourite with 30 minute taster sessions on their court and tea and cakes right next door. If you’d like more information about the club or how to get started, please do contact me. There’s definitely a session for you! See you on court. The bowling season is well under way and we have experienced quite a good start which is encouraging for all members. Of course, there is a long way to go but overall, the picture looks promising. We are happy to welcome a new member. He is very keen and learning the different aspects of the game quickly. I’m sure he will soon be a very valued player member. All bowls clubs are seeking new members and we are no exception. All clubs offer similar facilities and coaching and again, we are no exception. If anyone is interested please contact either Frank Boxall (01359 244591) or Graham Newman (01359 240846) who will be very happy to engage in a conversation with you. STOWMARKET SNOOKER After winning Division 2 of the 2017-18 Bury & District Snooker and Billiards League, the team from Stowmarket RBL moved to Stowmarket Meadlands for 2018-19, where they played as Meadlands B. Despite losing two players, they finished in second place to Cheveley Road A in Division 1, both teams having been promoted from the previous season. The team was represented by Steve Standere (captain), Duncan Ralph, Tim Hearing, Martin Scales, Shane Barrett and Alan James. A late signing for the second half was Richard Barton, whose presence a bit earlier might have secured first place. On the individual front, Duncan Ralph won the Bury Snooker Singles title for the third year running. Together with partner Steve Standere, Duncan also finished a winner in the Bury Snooker Pairs Handicap. Runners-up were fellow members Martin Scales and Gavin Squirrell. Steve Standere also reached the semi-final of the Bury Billiards. A team of Steve Standere, Steve Pollard and Duncan Ralph competed in the Green Baize competition where they finished runners-up. Green Baize is a combined billiards and snooker event consisting of ten minute games. The 2019-20 season looks to be a promising one with the signing of Shaun Payne (a welcome return for him) and Cark Collins.

SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY The academy was started back in 1990 and next year we will celebrate our 30th anniversary. Classes teaching Universal Karate and Kickboxing for juniors from five to 13 years and seniors from 14 years run out of Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre in Stowmarket and Needham Market Community Centre. In 2004 chief coach and founder Mark JR Trent started the UFKKWA Worldwide Association with just a handful of local clubs. Now we have 244 martial arts organisations in 33 countries. Recently members of the UFKKWA and the BTA (British Taekwon-Do Association), of which Mark is vice-president, attended the Seashore Holiday Park in Great Yarmouth for a weekend of martial arts training and socialising. Well in excess of 150 attended the camp and 110 participated, having the chance to train in karate, yoga, Kung Fu, kendo, Ju Jitsu, kickboxing, savate, pressure points, self-defence, dynamic strength training, stretching and dynamic kicking. Local Viking group Blodorn Englar gave three demonstrations as well as an all-day workshop. Pictured (l-r) are Mark, BTA Chief Instructor Stuart Usher and BTA President Grandmaster Roy Kilner. The Scorpion MA Academy holds events throughout the year including seminars, inter-club tournaments, coloured belt and blackbelt exams, fundraising events, junior Nerf Gun Sundays plus lots more. The academy offers all new members joining one month of free training and we have a very fair pricing structure.
