A WORD FROM THE EDITOR So football season has ended! I’m not exactly a fanatic, but since Jack started playing our weekends are planned around his fixtures (insofar as we ever have a plan). I have spent many, many, many cold and blustery mornings on the sidelines since last September and now it’s getting a little warmer, it all stops and cricket takes over! I propose a swap; winter cricket and summer football. Perhaps I’ll start a petition. Camogie (women’s version of hurling) was always my game, but it’s interesting being the parent rather than the player. Mostly I just want Jack to be safe, but a win always makes for a better weekend. When we lose, the post-match analysis goes on and on and on... Every move, every injury, every tiny transgression is discussed adinfinitum and then re-enacted just to prove the point. I feign interest, but usually I’m more focused on defrosting my fingers and toes. All that aside I will miss my Saturday mornings with the mums and dads who turn up whatever the weather. We’ve become quite good friends, as have the boys, and it’s fun to spend time with people who share a common interest, some more vocally than others! I suppose that’s why I get so many submissions from groups and clubs eager to welcome visitors or participants, and I hope those of you looking to connect with others find what you need within these pages. For some the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat may suffice, while others might want to find a new hobby or try a new activity. Getting fit might be your priority or you may want to expand your knowledge of a particular subject by attending talks and demonstrations. Finding people with a similar mind-set, who share your interest and welcome you with open arms is, and I mean this sincerely, life-changing. I’ve seen it happen with my mum. She started playing bridge about five years ago and has made so many new friends as a result. In the last two years she lost one of her best friends to cancer and another moved away to live near her family. Without her bridge ‘gang’ mum would be lost and just as they have supported her through difficult times, she has supported them. If you’re feeling a bit isolated or lonely, I hope you find someone or something in the following pages which encourages you to reach out. And if you know someone who would enjoy or benefit from an opportunity to get out and about, perhaps you could be the one who makes it happen. As I could now that my Saturday mornings are mine again for a little while.

A SPECIAL DAY FOR STOWMARKET This year the first stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour will finish in Stowmarket on Monday 10 June. The finish line will be outside The Regal Theatre and The Mix on Ipswich Street. The tour will come over the finish line twice as the cyclists complete a 10km loop, so plenty of opportunity to let the action sink in. Councillor Paul Ekpenyong, Town Mayor elect said: “I am thrilled the OVO Energy Women’s Tour is coming to Stowmarket. This is an excellent opportunity for the town. It’s great to see local businesses and community groups coming together for what will be one of the highlights of my mayoral year.” The Communities Team at Stowmarket Town Council have organised a trail walk based around pink and purple wooden bicycles used to celebrate the race coming to Stowmarket. The walk focuses on key landmarks within the town and encourages health and wellbeing through walking. In addition to the walk, the Communities Team are hosting a fundraising lawn event at the town council offices, an opportunity to have your face painted and enjoy some delicious cakes, plus many more fun and games! Pop along on the day to enjoy a piece of the action and support a great charity. The event will run from 11.30am-1pm. The day will feature a number of community groups that you can visit in the event village, along with some fantastic body confidence workshops hosted by The Blossom Charity. The charity exists to help women who would like to make their lives work better. It could be to improve confidence and build new skills or to help launch an idea. They will be running two workshops on the day of the cycle tour based around building your confidence where they will look at strengths, understand confidence, what impacts it and learn tools to boost or recharge confidence when knocked. Workshops will run at The Mix from 10.30am-1pm and 6.30-8pm. For more information call The Blossom Charity on 01379 678483 or to book your place, visit the EventBrite page at: https://theblossomcharity.eventbrite.co.uk Bridget McIntyre, founder of the Blossom Charity, said: “We are looking forward to being part of the first stage of the tour. We share the goals of the tour in terms of helping women achieve their goals in life. Some of us know our goals & lack confidence, some of us need help in setting those goals.”

NEWS SUPER STARS!

STOWFIESTA 2019 StowFiesta, the biggest free music festival in Mid Suffolk, returns for its thirteenth year as part of the Suffolk Day Big Weekender. StowFiesta, which takes place at Chilton Fields and is organised by Stowmarket Town Council, will be held on 22 and 23 June. The festival was originally launched in 2007 as StowFest before evolving into the more family orientated StowFiesta in 2014.

The Meadlands was awash with gold and purple on Saturday, April 25 as the Stowmarket Stars, Stowmarket’s only majorette troupe, put on their first ever fun day. The garden at the recreation club was lined with gazebos where delighted visitors tried their hand at tombolas, lucky dips and a raffle. There was even face painting, glitter tattoos and a bouncy castle to keep children amused. The crowds were kept entertained by a show-stopping performance by the Stowmarket Stars who twirled their batons to Salute! by Little Mix and shook their pom poms to Jess Glynne. There was a stunning solo by Daisy Huggins, aged nine, who was then joined by Daisy Edmans, also nine, who showed off their fantastic baton skills in a spectacular duo. The event finished on a high with members of the public being able to join the Stars for their final performance. The afternoon raised almost £400 which will be put towards new uniforms for troupe members. Troupe Leader Ali Huggins says: “I am so proud of my stars, they are an amazing group who have put their all into their performance today. We have had an amazing turnout and the atmosphere was fantastic.” She went on to thank all the parents, volunteers and companies who kindly donated raffle prizes and the Meadlands for hosting the event.

Sponsored by Total Driving and supported by Mid Suffolk District Council and Stowmarket Rugby Club, StowFiesta has always focused on providing a mix of quality live music, featuring both covers and original bands and covering a wide range of genres. Among the acts playing on Saturday 22 are the talented and diverse covers band Chart Attack, the multi-talented loop-pedal expert Modern One Man Band, the brilliant seven-piece ska band Rude and Reckless and the dynamic rock band Walkway. Sunday kicks off with Andy Ottley’s popular Elvis tribute act and will feature the rock and roll piano wizardry of Phil Jackson and his band, the brilliant rockabilly band Chuck Wills and the excellent Americana band The Bay Horse Boys. As well as the live music there will be various free family activities including a climbing wall, circus skills workshop and a bouncy castle. There are also free pitches up for grabs for charities and not for profit organisations. Interested groups should email: laurenb@stowmarket.org David Marsh, Events and Theatre Manager at Stowmarket Town Council, said: “It’s going to be another great event. We always tweak things from year to year to ensure that the festival improves and grows. We’re holding this year’s event as part of the Suffolk Day Big Weekender, so we’ve got a bit more of a focus on Suffolk based acts and we think we’ve got the right balance between covers and originals. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for people to have a boogie! One of the things about StowFiesta that is always popular, and something of a rarity, is the free family entertainment, so people don’t have to break the bank paying for the children to go on loads of stalls and rides.” For more information on StowFiesta please visit: www.stowfiesta.co.uk / www.facebook.com/stowfiesta

Stowmarket Stars will be performing later in the summer at Haughley Fete, Combs Fete and Stowmarket Carnival. The troupe meets at Hillside Community Centre on Tuesday afternoons at 4pm. For more information please contact: stowmarketstars@gmail.com / 07774 501196

STOWMARKET TWINNING ASSOCIATION Over Easter weekend Stowmarket Twinning Association played host to their twin town, Verneuil-sur-Avre in France, celebrating 40 years of friendship. Thirty-nine people crossed the channel from Normandy on Good Friday and were met by their families to start the celebrations. Town twinning is an ideal way to connect families and associations, to learn and understand about each other’s cultures and forge lasting friendships. Links began with Verneuil-sur-Avre through middle and high school exchanges with a school in Verneuil. In 1979 a charter was signed by both town mayors and twinning association presidents to form a close relationship. Now 40 years later at a welcoming reception at the Museum of East Anglian Life, Mayor of Stowmarket Linda Baxter, Deputy Mayor of Verneuil Francoise Ayrault, Chairman of Stowmarket Twinning Marilyn Finbow and President of Verneuil Twinning Gigi Morenne signed charters, once again showing our commitment to each other. This was followed by a celebration dinner on the Saturday evening and a day visit to Hampton Court on the Sunday.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July The 58th Stowmarket Carnival is just around the corner! This year's two day carnival event theme is Films – please feel free to dress for the theme. STOWMARKET RAILWAY STATION I retired from work in Norfolk and moved to Stowmarket about eighteen months ago. Besides being a very pleasant town and having housing that suited me, the railway links were a great attraction to me. I have not been disappointed.

Our friends left on the Tuesday morning with everybody agreeing that it had been a great weekend. Family friendships had been forged once again and looking forward to the exchange visit next year in Verneuil.

How lucky we are to have a direct train every hour to London and an indirect one, changing at Ipswich in between. Similarly, once an hour to Diss and Norwich. In addition, we have the line to Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge and Peterborough. All this has enabled me to travel around to see places and people. Many friends have come to visit using the trains.

If anybody would like to join the association or learn more about it please contact Marilyn Finbow: 01449 613932

The excellent railway provision was one of the reasons that I gave up driving a year ago. I now walk much more which can only be good for the health. Furthermore, the station and staff are real treasures. Take time and look at the building – it is magnificent. The staff are efficient and so friendly. A while ago I dropped a bag containing glass and managed to cut myself. The staff were so kind and helped me clear up and tended to my wound. If you want inspiration, look at the day noticeboard. Chris, the station supervisor and others often put up a ‘Thought for the Day’. They always give food for thought. A recent one went as follows: Be who you are; Say what you feel. Because those who mind don’t matter: And those who matter don’t mind. I found that very helpful as have various friends with whom I have shared it. So, let us be grateful we have a station, a staffed station and a caring staff. Michael Langan, Cedars Park

OUT & ABOUT CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE & CHARITY SHOP On 30 June 16 children will arrive for a one-month visit with one more joining us on 10 July. Many people have dropped donations into our charity shop, but haven’t left their details so I’m unable to write personally to thank you. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this, but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions. The shop provides a great focal point for us and helps to raise awareness for our work. All staff are all unpaid volunteers and some have been with us since the shop opened. We really do need people who are able to offer a few hours a week to help out covering for holidays and sickness. Each session is only three hours so if you think you could be available to help with spot cover we would love to hear from you. No experience is necessary and you’re never on your own. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, so drop in and have chat when you are passing. We urgently need donations of good quality second-hand clothing for the children throughout the year (new is very welcome too). Any age is appreciated as we provide clothing to the children when they come here and also to their siblings at home, plus other children who, for various reasons, are unable to be included in the program. The main focus is for the visiting group who need sizes 6-7, 7-8, 8-9 and 9-10 years Not only will the visiting children receive a much needed boost to their health, but they will also enjoy the trip of a lifetime, taking home memories that money cannot buy! Thank you for helping to make this possible. Link Chair Elizabeth Parker www.ccllmidsuffok.org.uk / 01449 760343

OUT & ABOUT NEW WAYS TO TREAT OLD ISSUES It makes the mind boggle; how did someone once realise that adding a lump of rock and some other chemicals, heating it up and suddenly you get molten metal to make all sorts with. Medicine has taken some odd twists and turns and through doctors and clinicians being brave and experimental it has provided lots of options to treat various human afflictions. After the Second World War, some sailors in sunken ships were found to not have water in their lungs. This meant that they had died before the ship was submerged. So what ended these poor unfortunate sailors’ lives? It was found that a torpedo hitting the ship created a huge shockwave that ruptured internal organs and caused a loss of life. In the 1980s some doctors thought that by using a focused shockwave that the specific energy could be used to break down kidney and bile stones – lithotripsy was born and many people have been saved operations by its use. In the early days you sat in a tin bath with water and the treatment was incredibly painful. Thankfully the machines have advanced now and you can lie on a bed rather than a cold tin bath. Later down the line some surgeons thought about changing the machines a bit more and using them for tendon and fascia problems. Now many healthcare providers around the country use shockwave machines to help people get better with painful tendon problems and plantar fascia issues. Even more recently some clinicians have been trying to use these machines to treat other conditions – ones where you wouldn’t naturally think the machines would work. One of those areas is osteoarthritis. This is a condition where the cartilage covering the bone at a joint gets worn and the underlying bone gets a larger honeycomb appearance to it and is weakened. This typically causes pain and stiffness that is from inflammation caused by the damage. It is a long-term condition and often thought of as non-reversible and progressive. So why would someone think to use shockwave on it? Well the effect on our tissues from the shockwaves produced by the machine appears to do several very beneficial things. By shaking up the tissues it encourages more blood flow to the area that brings in more goodies into the affected area and flushes more waste products out from the damaged area. It seems to stimulate the body to kick-start its own repair mechanisms and produces chemicals that give pain relief and can press the ‘reset’ button on our pain system in the brain.

SODS PRESENTS CALAMITY JANE Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s next musical, Calamity Jane, will be earlier in the year than usual, opening on Wednesday 17 July with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening and a matinee on Saturday 20 July at The Regal Theatre. Please call the box office on 01449 612825 or book online at: www.regalstowmarket.co.uk ‘Calam’ dresses like a man, totes a gun and protects the Deadwood City stagecoach. Well-meaning, but disaster-prone, Calamity introduces Katie to Deadwood and we find Wild Bill Hickock and Calam’s love Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin fighting for her attention. Which one will win her hand and will Calamity find love? Including the popular musical numbers Deadwood Stage, Windy City, Black Hills of Dakota and the famous Doris Day hit Secret Love, this show is for everyone to enjoy.

There appears to be very good results so far in using this form of treatment to slow down or halt the rate at which the disease progresses, increase people’s joint mobility and function and give people better quality of life. Research seems to be backing up the initial thoughts of the clinicians who tried it. If ‘dem bones’ of yours are giving you some grief from osteoarthritis, why not give them a bit of a shake up and try something a little different to help create a wave of helpful healing for your body? WOOLPIT AND DISTRICT MUSEUM Open from 2-4.30pm every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday until the end of September and on Wednesday afternoons in August from 1pm to 3.30pm.

Those that visited our market on May 4 will know it was full to the brim with a marvellous range of crafts on offer. We had a variety of unique textile stalls, from crochet and knitted toys to amazing hand-sewn alterations and creations, delicious allergy free snacks and treats, jewellery, upcycled items, engraved goods, weaved willow and woodturning, needle felting, book folding and a variety of personalised, unique gifts for all occasions made from a variety of materials. Each month we have a different selection of crafters, meaning our markets are worth visiting again and again. The Scouts fundraising committee offer a small selection of refreshments from the kitchen and seating in the smaller hall. Their very popular bacon rolls are only £2.50. The market is on the first Saturday of the month, located behind the library in the Scout Centre, Milton Road IP14 1EX. Our next market is on Saturday 1 June from 10am-1.30pm. Follow the signs (on foot) from the town centre. For more information please contact Sherilee Hawkins: Stowmarketartisanmarket@gmail.com

The museum has two new displays for 2019. The first, entitled After the War, looks at the lives of local men who fought in the First World War and survived, their integration back into the community after being discharged and the impact of Spanish flu, both nationally and locally. It also looks at celebrations held in the village to mark the Treaty of Versailles and how Woolpit remembered the 25 local men who lost their lives in the conflict. Our other new display features St Mary’s Church. We have a model to illustrate notable features of the building and a timeline marking important events in its long history, beginning in 1005 when Ulfketel, ‘Earl of the East Angles’, gave the church and manor of Woolpit to the shrine of St Edmund. Both displays are complemented by some fascinating photographs of the village dating from circa 1900 to about 1930. Our two popular permanent displays, the brickworks and the Victorian kitchen, have been cleaned and refreshed and we are keeping the Green Children display up for another year as so many visitors are interested in this legend. We look forward to welcoming you to the museum soon. We can open by prior arrangement at times other than those specified above and welcome small group visits. Enquiries to: museum@woolpit.org

The ancient abbey church at Bury St Edmunds was, in its time, the biggest in Western Christendom until St Peter’s in Rome was built in the 16th century. The Vikings were powerful invaders and in AD-569 put King Edmund to death with scores of arrows and cutting off his head. He, then being sainted, was buried in the abbey church. The Rev Tim Stevens will tell us of the Vikings and their considerable effect in Suffolk Members £2, non-members £3.

TAKING A BREAK The Working Time Regulations were put in place over 20 years ago, in 1998 to be precise. This established that if a worker works for more than six hours, then in most cases, he or she will be entitled to a rest break of 20 minutes, which should be uninterrupted. The rest break, however, will not apply in special circumstances, in which case a worker is entitled to an equivalent period of what is called ‘compensatory rest’.

In this instance, the claim was not successful. The worker’s claim went all the way to the Court of Appeal, which said that rest need not amount to 20 minutes uninterrupted if the rests that the worker does have, have the same value, in terms of contributing to his or her rest. This case serves as a reminder that employers should make workers aware of their rights to a rest break, and allow for encouragement of that by scheduling them where possible.

A case decided earlier this year looked at an employee who worked only intermittently – which meant that he was not entitled to the uninterrupted 20 minutes rest break. He was a signaller on the railway. However, as he worked intermittently, he was able to take a number of rest breaks. When added together, these came to 20 minutes or more. He claimed that Network Rail, his employer, should have allowed him additional time so that he could take a break of 20 minutes during each shift.

The Garden Project unveiled a new birdbath with a sundial which forms the new centrepiece of our drought garden. This was made possible by a kind donation from Enterprise Heritage Ltd after the Garden Project had carried out some work for them. Friday 21 June is Suffolk Day and Stowmarket will be full of exciting things to do. Homestart and Red Gables will be having a teddy bear’s picnic in the garden and spinney from noon-2pm with cakes and refreshments and a chance to eat under the giant redwood trees. All ages are welcome with or without their teddies. From 2-4pm we are having an open garden afternoon with guided tours of the grounds and the spinney, led by the volunteers who know all about the plants and will be happy to answer questions. Outdoor Theatre We are delighted to welcome back Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society who will be performing another play by Alan Stockdill in the grounds of Red Gables in September. After their excellent performance of Give a Little Love last year, the troupe will be delivering a full-length play called Godfrey’s Last Stand which is about a man who wins the lottery but doesn’t tell his family! It is a lovely heart-warming comedy. We are hoping to see Andy Ottley return to Red Gables as Sun of Elvis in the autumn. This was a popular event last time as he entertained the crowd with a selection of Elvis’ greatest hits. The event will help to raise funds for Red Gables. More details will be available soon. OUT & ABOUT 1st COMBS SCOUT GROUP DUCK RACE Saturday, June 8, 2pm at Pikes Meadow Held at Pikes Meadow, Stowmarket, there will be riders, refreshments, stalls and games, and not forgetting duck races! There is fun for all the family so come along and join us for a great afternoon!

THE RIVER GIPPING TRUST Work on the permissive path on both sides of the river bank leading to the remains of the 200-year-old bridge abutments continues. Last year this path was six feet high in nettles and impassable. We continue to cut the weeds along the path, encouraging grass to grow through at the expense of nettles. Meanwhile we are working on funding and planning permission for the new bridge between the bridge abutments.

A few years back the River Gipping Trust designed and installed a scaled down replica of the famous Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge. The bridge oak was felled by Jason Gathorne-Hardy from White House Farm, Great Glemham, where trust members prepared the timber in one of his barns. It was designed by Colin Turner, our eldest active member, and transported and installed at Pipps Ford. A good view of the bridge can be seen from the river footpath at Pipps Ford.

We welcome new members to the trust. Membership income is a very important part of our funding and will help us fund the new bridge. It’s only around £10 per year and you can download a membership form from the website or pick one up on the gate at Baylham and Pipps Ford. www.rivergippingtrust.org.uk

STOWMARKET & DISTRICT MONDAY CLUB After enjoying an Easter Bonnet Parade and a bingo session at our Easter Dance we had two bank holidays with no meetings. We will now resume with an evening of horseracing and a barbecue organised by Janet and Nigel combined with an election for club members on the committee. After our AGM, Amanda will lead a craft evening and then the following week the Stowmarket Concert Band will entertain us. We are a club for adults with learning difficulties and meet each Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at the Community Hub in Crown Street, Stowmarket. We are run entirely by volunteers and new members and helpers are always very welcome. If you would like further information, please contact me on 01449 672123 or just come along on a Monday evening. OUT & ABOUT / Schools WOMEN’S SECTION, ROYAL BRITISH LEGION STOWMARKET Our last meeting was held on April 17. During the exhortation and silent tribute we were asked to remember Molly Welham who had passed away. Molly was a life long resident, and could always be seen around Stowmarket on her bike. We extend our condolences to her family. Our guests were Dave and Pat from Roots & Shoots. Pat told us of the various plants that would make nice baskets, the type of compost and feeding matter. She then made up two baskets using some of the plants and said that three of a kind was ideal and to use foliage as well as flowering plants. They very kindly gave us the baskets to raffle and these were won by Sheila O and Kay. Shirley gave a vote of thanks for a very interesting topic for us gardeners. Some members still haven’t received membership cards but were sent letters to confirm that they are members. Guests would now be charged £2 each session. We had a word search to do and the first three to finish were Lynda, Sheila M and Muriel. They each received some Easter chocolates. Gloria made a lovely Simnel cake and a free ticket was given to everybody. It was won by Helen B. We had received a letter from the bell master thanking all the ladies who had helped at the jumble sale for the bells appeal. They made a lovely amount. A vote of thanks was given to Janet for our mystery tour outing which again was rewarded with nice weather. Names were taken for the fish and chip supper on June 19, which replaces our meeting. Lynda Farr

MID SUFFOLK VIDEO CAMERA CLUB It’s almost time for our AGM and the year has just rushed by with members very heavily involved in making a promotional film. Coordinated by Mike Keeper, the three-minute film had to show what the club did. The challenge highlighted the need to present the most informative information in a short but relevant way. It was a challenge, but a good learning curve. You can access the film online by searching for Mid Suffolk Video Camera Club.

STOWMARKET WILDLIFE GROUP Bonny Wood in Barking Tye The dry weather has helped us to get on well with our winter work programme and the volunteers have cleared around the pond and created more scalloped ride edges to let in the sunlight. Richard Cage and his Virgin Media colleagues have done a great job in widening the ride we share with James Buckle’s part of the wood and now it’s all done it looks fabulous. A significant milestone was passed in February when the midweek team coppiced the compartment by the field entrance: it was last done in the late 1980s and this is the first area to be recut under Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s stewardship of the wood. The hazel regrowth was really strong and it’s great to see the wood getting back into the cycle of coppice management with all the benefits for wildlife such as dormice, woodland birds and butterflies that this brings. The management plan for Bonny is now up for revision and we look forward to bringing more of the wood into coppice rotation, cleaning out the pond again and continuing to improve the rides so they are more attractive to wildlife. EVENTS Unfortunately we have had to cancel the rural and wildlife crime talk on Wednesday 26 June. However, we have arranged another speaker, Neil Dickinson with Back to Butterflies. This is Neil’s personal story of how a boyhood interest in butterflies was renewed later in life and explains why. The talk contains surprises and humour, but is also thought provoking because of its wider context. The talk will take place at Stowupland Village Hall. Admission is £2.50 including refreshments. The 2019 programme can be downloaded from: www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/wildlifegroups John Thompson: 01449 676471 / swtstowmarket@gmail.com

We recently visited Duxford where a guide told us all about the Blackbird and showed us how the pilot signed their names on the plane. The Avro York plane was in Dan Air colours and was used in the Berlin Blockade, a period of history we had all forgotten about. The plane had spent 10 years in Lasham until 1974 where it was used as a bunk house for Air Scouts. In 1986 it was dismantled and successfully reassembled and restored at Duxford. Colin Wright has provided the film of Swanage Pirate Festival and our next meeting is when members show their interpretations by editing the original. It’s always interesting how many different interpretations we have to view. We have been viewing winning I.A.C. films from all over the world and show interpretations by video makers. It’s now possible to enter competitions on any continent and we were recently invited to enter one in an Australia video club! We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm at Hill Side, Stowmarket IP14 2BD. For information contact membership secretary Ann Evans: 01728 861566

Full of laughs, catchy tunes and suitable for all ages, there’s something for everyone in Immersion Theatre’s all-new version of this classic tale. Imagination runs wild and logic is abandoned in this fantastical, larger-than-life musical brimming with nonsensical fun and excitement for the entire family. Follow Alice and the White Rabbit as they set off on a colourful, topsy-turvy adventure like no other and meet a host of outlandish characters including the troublesome twins, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the notorious Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and, of course, the Mad-as a bat-Hatter! Now in its seventh year it is thriving, and continues to increase in the number and range of its events; broadening its appeal to individuals of virtually any age and reading taste. The festival offers a varied literary programme which includes authors’ events in four Felixstowe venues; a pop up festival on the seafront, at our historic fort and museum, and on the two rivers which border the town. This year there will also be a special package of writing workshops – being promoted to writing groups nationally – to attract aspiring writers to the festival. This will increase the festival’s profile and encourage a range of audiences from a larger geographical area. Last year more than 1,000 tickets were sold and this year the number is likely to increase. There is an exciting range of author events for both adults and children. The speakers include well-known and respected writers covering a wide range of genres and also debut novelists and those from writing groups. To demonstrate the festival’s diversity, authors include former politician Alan Johnson, Alison Weir (author of Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets) and Esther Freud (festival patron) and half-sister Annie Freud discussing Annie’s poetry. Children’s events are incredibly diverse and include Hotel Flamingo Drawalong with Alex Milway, Sutton Hoo Roadshow, Operation Buried Treasure with Ally Sherrick and Calling Mission Control. Spoilt for choice, you will have the pick of at least three speaker events each hour from early Saturday morning until Sunday evening. This format creates a warm and vibrant festival atmosphere. If you haven’t attended Felixstowe Book Festival before – or any book festival – do give this one a try! STOWMARKET BADMINTON CLUB Stowmarket Badminton Club held its 13th annual junior tournament recently with 94 players from eight different junior clubs/groups in various age groups from under-10 to under-16 taking part. The aim was to get young players from junior clubs or groups in the county to enter and this year was yet another great turn-out. The support from families and friends was excellent with the balcony at Mid Suffolk Sports Centre overflowing with spectators. The honours were well spread between the teams which included Stowmarket, Ipswich YMCA, Abbeygate, Bosmere, Bury Academy, Claydon, Debenham and Newmarket. The winners of the various groups were: Under 10: Jed Millin and Max Ling from Debenham (pictured front). R/U Lewis Hall and Charlie Corbyn from Stowmarket. Under 12: Harrison Day and Tom Warner from Abbeygate. R/U Keira-Mae Croft and Krish Jain from YMCA. Under 14: Max Adderson and James Wing from Stowmarket (pictured back). R/U Dan Cook and Harry Plummer from YMCA. Under 16: Ben Ward and Sam Theaker from Abbeygate. R/U Laurence Chappel and James Norburn from Abbeygate. We were very lucky to have excellent support from our senior members who assisted the club coaches on the day as umpires, scorers and cheerleaders. The enthusiasm from the players and the backup from their parents was infectious and made our commitment to organising and running a junior section, alongside our adult club, so worthwhile. The club has prospered as a consequence with youngsters playing in local tournaments, attending county training and playing in county matches. Saturday 30 March also saw the end of season in-house tournament. All 40 of the juniors took part in the fun tournament in teams of three, earning medals for the best team before all the juniors went home with an Easter egg for their efforts. A big thank-you to all the coaches and helpers who have volunteered their time throughout the year to keep the junior section going. Long may it last! Finally, the end of season club tournaments brought together the majority of the club (plus invited guests) to take part in singles, handicapped doubles and mixed tournaments run over three Wednesdays in April. This year saw Isabel Lucas and Ryan Newcombe take the honours in the singles, Paul Adderson/ Ryan Newcombe and Janine Simonds/Mary Haywood winning the men’s and ladies doubles and Jo Marshall and Ryan Newcombe taking the mixed title. Chairman Andy Newcombe

STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB With the new season underway, both adult sides have been involved in closerun Two Counties contests and it’s been pleasing to see Jordan Dye and Nik Mayhew finding form. Every Saturday in June, July and August has Saturday fixtures for the 1st and 2nd XIs at Chilton Fields and the midweek Wednesday T20 competition is about to be in full swing. Junior coaching on Monday evenings has seen excellent turnouts and competitive games in four age groups. So far, good performances by Henry Chapman, Jamie Cracknell, Ollie Lambon and Kieran Lilley, among others, have been encouraging to see. We are still very ready to welcome players of all ages and abilities. For more information, please contact Clive Witherly: 01359 240019 / wigg51@btinternet.com www.stowmarketcc.co.uk

sport SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB DONATE £300 TO ALZHEIMER`S SOCIETY

ELMSWELL BOWLS CLUB (at Stowupland) The 2019 season is well underway and yet again we have encountered a variety of weather such as sun and warmth over Easter followed by cold, rain and hail. There’s not much to report at this stage, other than to say we have two new occasions added to our calendar that we haven’t had the pleasure of hosting in the past. We are very privileged to announce that we have been asked to host the Suffolk County Area D semi-finals on July 13 and the finals the following day. Secondly, on September 22 we will have a visit from a kit car club and their vehicles will be on display to the general public from 1pm. Match results up to and including May 1

Stowmarket Short Mat Bowls Club recently hosted a tournament at Woolpit Village Hall where 15 teams from Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk played against each other. The individual winning team was from East Hanningfield in Essex, and the winning county, based on accumulated scores, was Cambridgeshire. Alan Hare, from Letchworth, won a Target Bowls Competition run during the event.

Stowmarket and District League April 23: lost away to Haughley B April 30: won at home against Stanton B

After deducting costs there was a residual profit of £300. This was donated to Alzheimer`s Society.

Scores/points and further results will appear in the July edition.

The club, which plays non-competitive club sessions on Mondays in Woolpit and on Wednesdays in Stowmarket, also plays in the local Ipswich & District League where it has just been promoted into Division 1 after only one season. New members would be welcome. If you are interested please contact the secretary, John Whiteman: on 01359 760668 / 07717 316685 / johnwhiteman50@sky.com The photograph shows club members looking on as Malcolm Bailey, club chairperson and captain, presents the cheque to Sue Vincent, a local representative for Alzheimer’s Society.

SWIMMING CLUB SEEKS VOLUNTEER FOR SEND GROUP Stowmarket Swimming Club is looking for a volunteer who is accredited to Level 2 Swimming Instructor – or someone who is willing to undertake training to this level. The club would fund both Level 1 and 2 teaching courses, with a requirement for a minimum two-year commitment from the volunteer. We offer two 45-minute classes every Thursday evening from 7.309pm (subject to club timetable) for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Our current teacher will be returning to university and we would like a new volunteer to start as soon as courses can be arranged. This would enable you to work alongside the current teacher. If you would like further information, please speak to head coach Sylvia Harrison or email her at: sscheadcoach@gmail.com

Triples League April 24: won at home against Bildeston May 1: drew away with St Botolph’s

NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUB The indoor season at the Meadlands has now finished. Congratulations to Brian Locksmith, John Milliard and Margaret Thorndyke on their Buzzard team winning the Birdie League Division C, and well played to my own teams, Churnet and Grouse, on finishing second in both their competitions. The Stowmarket League outdoor season is now in full swing. Tuesday teams have had mixed results; the A team have won both their games while the B team have lost two very close games in their first year in the first division. The C team have won one and lost one. The Wednesday team have started strongly in defence of their title, winning 6.5-0.5 at Walsham, before losing a very tight game 4-3 to Gipping Valley. Our Thursday team is enjoying their bowling and hoping for an improvement on last year’s results. We have been congratulated on the condition of the green, so a big thankyou to John Cook, Trevor Harvey, Alistair Bailie and all the other volunteers for their work over the winter months. On Sunday 9 June we host a friends and family barbeque, and Sunday 21 July is President’s Day, when the president’s team plays the captain’s team, with teams drawn on the day. There will be two friendly matches against Coney Weston, date yet to be confirmed. The draw for the club pairs and triples has been made; please consult the noticeboard to see who you are playing with and against. A date for finals day has yet to be arranged; any suggestions for events to fill up the day should be forwarded to Alistair. A Roving Jack or a singles competition have been suggested. You need to do something to earn your ‘bacon sarnies’! Anyone wishing to discuss any aspect of NMBC can contact either Alistair Bailie on 01449 720759 or Pat Hadden on 01473 831308. David Hindley

Sport / Church News STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB

FINBOROUGH LADIES NETBALL CLUB

It has been a very exciting few weeks for those of you following tennis: Andy Murray has revealed that he feels no pressure to play again (so may concentrate on developing his sports management company) and Joanna Konta reached her first clay court final, but then lost it having been a set and a break ahead. So, all very confusing at the top of British tennis, but what’s it like at the top of Suffolk tennis?

On May 1 Finborough Netball Club welcomed international and super league player Sasha Corbin to their home courts for a solo session training night. Once we’d managed to control our excitement and silly smitten grins, we set to work. The session consisted of a warm-up and ball skills, technical netball coaching and match application, bringing together the skills we’d learnt during the night. We ended with an informal Q&A with photos, selfies and signing.

We’re firing on all cylinders at the moment with entries about to close for the annual tournament running all through the summer. A big push has seen many more members sign-up for our flagship, but still fun, main event. Previous winners will be giving the silverware a final polish and maybe a little cuddle before hoping to win it back. Our Open Day is on July 7 and is the perfect way to see the club, meet some members and have some time on court having a bash. As usual we’ll be able to deal with juniors and adults so a real opportunity to get a flavour of the place.

A fantastic ambassador for netball and women’s sport, the energy and positivity Sasha brought to the training session was contagious. The Finborough players were able to ask questions along the way, which enabled them to fully apply the skills they’d learnt to their game, both individually and within their own team dynamics.

On July 28 the club will have a pitch at the Museum of East Anglian Life so another chance to grab some information and have a go at very mini-tennis! We’re also looking out for public events where some mini-tennis can be demonstrated and played. Send me a message if you’ve got something coming up. If you’d like information about the club, whether a junior, senior, beginner or advanced, get in touch and we’ll look after you. See you on court! Senior Club Coach Chris Cunningham chris@chriscoaching.plus.com

MEADLANDS INDOOR BOWLS CLUB Our three lane rink at Meadlands Recreation Club on Needham Road, Stowmarket (next to the Cedars Hotel) is open from 10am-10pm seven days a week. The sports hall also contains four quality full sized snooker tables. Other sections attached to the club include angling, badminton, darts, crib and petanque. There is also a shop with reduced prices for members and a bar offering extremely competitive prices. Annual subscriptions are now due for renewal at £36 for a playing member and £22 for a social member. Membership and indoor competition forms are available in the bowls hall. All the competitions are the same as in previous years with the exception of the Birdie League which will be two divisions instead of three. At the moment there will be 12 teams in each division, but there is room for additional teams. The River League can also cater for additional teams. Anyone interested in entering any of the competitions should contact David, Bev or John for details. Competition Results

Once the Q&A session was over, Sasha kindly signed balls, programs and generally any flat surface the girls could find. The buzz amongst the players was electric and they nearly broke the internet that night with tweets and Instagram posts! Perhaps just as important as the invaluable skills and drills we learnt that night, Sasha’s passion for the game at all levels and abilities was a real inspiration to the girls. From age 13 upwards, all players related to Sasha’s love for netball and her indomitable team spirit was contagious. Holly Phillips www.finborough-netball.com

Church News STOWMARKET UNITED REFORMED CHURCH As summer approaches our thoughts turn to our coffee morning and afternoon tea events, with the first afternoon tea on Monday, June 3 from 2pm at 9 Windermere Road. Every Thursday between 10am and noon the smell of fried bacon drifts throughout the church as customers enjoy bacon rolls along with tea and coffee. Toasted teacakes are also in demand. Volunteers have provided this service on market day for over 50 years. More recently we have introduced a charity coffee morning on the second Saturday of the month. Supporting different organisations each time, visitors are invited to choose from a wonderful array of delicious cakes or pastries to accompany their choice of drink, all free with donations welcome. Why not take the opportunity to enjoy a break from shopping or to meet with family and friends in a friendly environment?

STOWMARKET GOSPEL HALL May was a busy month for us at the Gospel Hall. We had our conference at the beginning of the month when Jim McPhail of ShareAfrica visited us. He told us about the work of ShareAfrica which helps poor Christians in Zambia. Support is provided for orphan children to help them get an education and for poor farmers to help them buy the seed and equipment they need. They also run a factory which uses groundnuts and corn to make peanut butter and cornflakes. This provides a market for the farmers’ crops and a number of jobs for the workers. The need is great, particularly in trying to support the many children in really desperate situations. Sponsors are always needed. Jim also gave us a very interesting and challenging talk in the evening on the Lord’s Prayer, reminding us how vital prayer is to the Christian. We are also looking forward to our Holiday Bible Club in the May half term holiday. By the time you read this, it will be over but we hope a good number of children will enjoy a great time with us.

As we continue our wait for a new minister we are being well served by varied visiting worship leaders at our 10.25am Sunday Service and continue to be active within the town. Should you require any information please contact our church administrator at: 01449 675045 / stowmarketurc@btconnect.com

Our regular activities continue with Tea and Play for babies, toddlers and their carers on Thursdays at 10am, Friday Club each Friday and Trailblazers on June 8 at 10.30am. There will also be a Family Service on June 9 at 4pm with other Sunday evening services at 6.30pm.

Reverend Mary Playford

You may recall that in April I was looking forward to a walking holiday in Yorkshire. Well, unfortunately I didn’t get there due to a back problem. Naturally I was very disappointed, but now I had a ‘free week’ and was determined to make the most of it!

Sunday Morning Worship: 10.30am (including crèche and Sunday Club)

Fortunately the weather was kind and by the end of the week when I headed north (but not as far as Yorkshire) to visit my family, I had, with the aid of my pressure washer, sand paper and wood stain renovated some garden furniture. I must say I am very pleased with the results, to say nothing of being happy that I don’t need to spend money on new chairs, and have done something to reduce waste. They say ‘The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry’, which is so true! We can be happily planning something and we get stopped in our tracks. It’s what we do after those well laid schemes have been thrown into disarray that’s important though. Do we throw up our hands in despair and resolve to do nothing except moan and feel sorry for ourselves, or do we look for opportunities to make the best of the situation? I like the word ‘opportunity’ and at Christchurch I think the congregation are fed up of me inviting them to sign up for the ‘opportunity to make the tea, arrange flowers, to be part of a team organising an event, being part of a Bible study group etc.’!

The dictionary definition of the word ‘opportunity’ is: ‘a time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something’. It’s a very positive word.

Over Power Body Transformations Fitness Class: Wednesday 5.30-8pm

So, when the set of circumstances that confront you are not quite what you had hoped for, or there is a vacant role in the community, the club (or church!) you belong to, maybe you can consider whether this is an ‘opportunity’ for you to do something positive.
