A WORD FROM THE EDITOR We live in interesting times, never knowing from one day to the next what’s going to happen. I’ve been fascinated by the House of Commons debates, not so much by the content of what’s being said, but by the sheer drama of it all. At times it’s calm and relatively reasoned, but when it’s not, it’s almost unbearable. Come what may, I do think it’s important to try to keep up with what’s happening, but I’d only just got my head around the ‘backstop’ when ‘proroguing’ became the lead news story. Perhaps it will be all over before the next edition is published. Meanwhile many of us have been getting children back to school or off to college. I was an emotional wreck on the morning I dropped Jack for his first day in Year 5. I don’t suppose I was the only mum who cried her way to work that day, but we quickly get back into the routine of it all and the summer holiday becomes a distant memory. In fact it’s shocking how quickly that happens! When Jack had to write about the best day of the summer, he wrote about the very last day when we had a couple of friends over to build a den and print initials on t-shirts using grated crayons. Admittedly we didn’t have a fancy holiday, but it seems he’d forgotten about all the lovely days out we had, our week in Ireland and all the clubs and camps he’d been to. Grating crayons won the day! Instructions available on request. Jack is a bit of a mad scientist and I don’t think his grandpa or his dad will object if I say it’s in his blood. The number of weird and wonderful experiments we’d done recently, from avocado ice-cream that tastes like chocolate (it didn’t!) to slime made using liquid detergent and cornflour. And my least favourite, instant ice-cream in a bag. Oh it might sound like a great idea, but when you end up with vanilla flavoured ice all over the sofa, the walls and the ceiling it loses its appeal, even if it’s quite nice to eat what’s left. Still, he’s a useful distraction from more serious issues so I think I’ll keep him! Perhaps I should ask him to invent a Brexit solution! If you’re looking for a distraction or an opportunity to get out and about, I think you’ll find it here, in addition to lots of essential drama-free (mostly) information about local developments.

NEWS MULTI-MILLION-POUND BOOST FOR REGION Mid Suffolk District Council’s subsidiary company Gateway 14 Ltd has completed the purchase of a key site, unlocking development plans and a potential multi-million-pound boost for the local economy. The 54-acre Stowmarket East site lies next to the A14 at junction 50 and immediately next to land bought by Gateway 14 Ltd in August 2018. The land is currently agricultural, but is earmarked for a new business and logistics park, with the potential to build more than one million square feet of logistics, warehousing, advanced manufacturing and business space. The land, opposite the Cedars Park area of the town, has outline planning permission for business and industrial development, boasting ideal transport links to the Port of Felixstowe, the Midlands and the UK motorway network beyond. The purchase of both pieces of land enables Gateway 14 Ltd to control the development of the whole site, maximising use of the land and ensuring a more ‘joined up’ development – planning and phasing activity according to market needs. Councillor Gerard Brewster, Cabinet Member for Economy and Chair of MSDC (Suffolk Holdings) Ltd said: “The development of Gateway 14 is an exciting venture that will help Mid Suffolk’s economy to thrive – creating local employment opportunities and supporting new and existing businesses. “We are ideally placed to attract major investors to our district and look forward to delivering significant benefits to our communities as a result of unlocking the potential of this site, as promised in our 5-year Vision for Prosperity action plan for Stowmarket.” Gateway 14 Ltd Chairman Chris Haworth said: “This is a very positive acquisition by Gateway 14. The combined land holding provides a unique opportunity for major occupiers seeking to locate in the region, as well as excellent facilities for local businesses seeking state of the art premises.” A shortlist of potential partners to help deliver the development has now been drawn up by Gateway 14 Ltd, with a report scheduled to go before Mid Suffolk District Council later this year. Councillors will then consider and approve the delivery model for the development.

NEWS ELLA AND CHLOE’S CHOP FOR CHARITY Inspired by the plight of a young boy called Patrick Askham who suffers from a condition called gastroschisis, Ella Roshier told her mum, Siobhan, that she had come up with an idea of how she may be able to help him and his family. She wanted her hair cut again for The Little Princesses Trust, a charity which takes human hair donations to create wigs for children who have lost their own hair through chemotherapy treatment (something Ella has done before), and at the same time combine this with being sponsored for the cut with all the money raised going to Patrick’s cause. Once Chloe heard about little Patrick, she too wanted to do what she could for him. Four-year-old Patrick was born prematurely with gastroschisis, a condition where the bowels and sometimes other organs are on the outside of the abdomen. Unfortunately, Patrick’s bowels were so matted that once they were placed back inside him, they had to be removed a few weeks later, leaving him short bowel. Patrick had a bowel transplant in December 2018 which failed, and he now needs to be placed on the UK donor register to hopefully receive his second gift of life. The NHS don’t fund the Cytotoxic T-cell therapy he needs to reduce the risks to his life; however, it was agreed that the treatment could be patient funded, costing around £20,000. Through contacts, Aimee Peck, a local self-employed hairdresser (hairbyaimee@studio19), very kindly offered her services free of charge (and also sponsored the two girls) and on August 30 both girls had their hair cut and were then treated to a cut and blow-dry afterwards. First and foremost, Ella and Chloe managed to raise close to £400 for Patrick’s therapy and secondly, the hair was donated to another very worthwhile cause. Very welldone Ella and Chloe.

WALKERS CUP RETURNS TO STOWUPLAND Report by Stowupland Community Events Group The sun shone on the walkers who set out from The Retreat in Stowupland and from the Old Newton Sports and Social Club on Sunday 8 September. This year there were many more starting out from Stowupland than from Old Newton so the trophy returns to Stowupland. The main purpose of the event is to get people out walking and raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice. This year there were more walkers than ever before, and a much greater number of dogs. A big thank-you to everyone who walked and everyone who helped organise the event. Stowupland walkers raised £342.20 for the hospice; Gift Aid should take the total to around £400. The Old Newton total will be reported when all their sponsorship monies have been collected. For the record, Stowupland won by 101 to 63, that’s 38 more walkers than Old Newton. A handover and victory celebration will be held in the near future.
AT THE HEART OF EVERY HOME A quality kitchen with a bespoke design and fitting service will last a lifetime and a new kitchen will add value to your house and the time you spend in it. They project manage the entire transformation including removal and disposal, plastering, electrics and gas work, installation, tiling and painting. Small building work can also be taken on. Kevin explains: “Our free design service is the most important step in the process of creating a great kitchen. I will visit your home to get a feel of how you use your kitchen and to discuss your ideas. You will then be invited to our calm, homely showroom by Paula to discuss your mood board and enjoy some refreshments. “The process between the first visit and a final quotation is an exciting journey. We are happy to requote and change things as many times as needed to achieve a quotation that fits your budget and specification. This is your kitchen and we want to make it perfect for you. Our complete kitchens including doors, units, worktops, under unit lighting, mid-range appliances and fitting start from as little as £12,000.” So why not pop into the studio for a coffee and a chat? • Competitive against High Street chains
A sterling effort by regular customers of the Little Wellington pub in Stowmarket has seen them raise an impressive £3,136 for Prostate Cancer UK. The majority of the money was raised by holding a sponsored bicycle ride earlier this year. Despite it being a wet and windy Saturday in early June, 35 dedicated cyclists took part – some of whom only cycle once a year – and put in a fantastic effort, completing a 20 mile circuit around Stowmarket, Needham Market, Great Blakenham, Claydon and Coddenham. Owner of the pub, Peter Garner, commented: “This was a great effort by the regulars in The Little Wellie and reflects the spirit of a true community pub. We are fortunate to have such committed and generous folk as our regular customers and we applaud them all. A special mention must be made of Doug (Sefton) who, individually, raised in excess of £1,000.

NEWS CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE & CHARITY SHOP Our last two visitors have now returned home and everything suddenly seems very quiet. Unfortunately their flight was delayed and as a result they missed the train from Minsk and had to wait for the next one at 11pm. They were put on a slow train which finally reached Drogichin at 6am, where they were collected by their mother for the 45-minute drive home. All in all they were travelling for almost 24 hours! The sad thing is that it’s only a three-and-a-half hour drive home from the airport but there was no one with a car to collect them. The 2019 Stow Carnival committee wish to thank the following for supporting this year’s carnival: Mansion House Publishing (In Touch with Stowmarket & Stowupland), ASDA Stowmarket, Gammers, Steadfast Anglia Ltd, John Webb, EA-Cat Volunteers, Bacton Transport Services, Evolution Darts, ZarKeys, Tesco, Red Gables, Sackers, Jam Community Pot, Posh Hair Salon, Emma’s Beauty, Bee-Dee Alterations and Repairs, Dog Show Judges Donna Burgess and Claire Curtis, Hill Side Community Centre /Stowmarket Town Council, The Regal Cinema and bRAVO Theatre Production. A big thank you to all our regular weekend carnival helpers, especially Stewart, Ashley, Steve, Annette, Michael, Jo and friends, and everybody who help in any and every way, however big or small. The weekend was a huge success once again and the carnival team did amazingly well in the heat. Thank you to everybody who came alone, watched the procession and supported us once again.

Despite the previous late night we will be off to Gatwick yet again on December 8 to collect our Christmas group of six girls who will be with us until December 29. All the children will be first time travellers with no idea of what an English Christmas will be like. NEWS / OUT & ABOUT DISTRICT COUNCILLOR REPORT: SEPTEMBER 2019
STOWMARKET CONCERT BAND
Councillors Rachel Eburne and Keith Welham Haughley, Wetherden and Stowupland Ward Bin collections Many households now have a different collection day. The council is grateful to everyone for their patience while staff transitioned to new collection rounds. This was a huge undertaking for the waste team, as well as an essential step to make the routes more fuel efficient and ensure there is capacity to meet future growth. Crews are bedding into their new routes with the support of the officer team. If you have any questions about the changes, please visit the FAQs on the MSDC website or, alternatively, get in touch with the waste team. MSDC Finances Mid Suffolk District Council’s first quarter finances show that the Council has a surplus of £180,000. This is caused primarily by a large increase in planning income, of £521,000, which is offset by increases in IT costs of £176,000, CIFCO and Gateway 14 expenses of £98,000 and a reduction in income of £169,000 from the PV panels. Gateway 14 expansion Mid Suffolk District Council’s subsidiary company Gateway 14 Ltd has completed the purchase of the Stowmarket East site adjacent to the Gateway 14 site. This means that the council owns a block of land between THE A14 and the railway line to the east of A1120. Draft Joint Local Plan Consultation The draft Joint Local Plan proposes a set of planning policies that will be used to inform decisions on planning applications and appeals over the next 18 years, up to 2036. Residents can take part online; the consultation ends on September 30. Update on Planning Applications in Stowupland The application to develop 70 new homes on land to the north of Phase 2 of the Bloor Homes development is scheduled for decision at the MSDC Planning Committee on Wednesday 18 September. That same morning, Suffolk County Council’s committee will be considering the application for a sixth form block at the high school. Land opposite the URC: Several of the details have received planning approval, but there are others that need to be resolved before works can begin.
Stowmarket Concert Band is enjoying another great year, with a great calendar of varied events across the county. So far this year we have done formal concerts, Oompah beer nights, marches, fetes and fayres, from Oulton Broad to Thetford. These included Euston Rural Pastimes, Stowmarket Food & Drink Festival, Haughley Palmer’s Bakery 150th Anniversary, Stowmarket Carnival Procession, Bacton Fayre, Oulton Broad Bandstand, Elmswell Over 55’s Club, two consecutive Oompah nights at the excellent function suites at Greshams Ipswich and, of course, our own showcase concert and Oompah night earlier in the season. Our training band is doing amazingly well and their skills are such that we often perform ‘main band’ pieces. SCB are very grateful to our supporters for making these events successful and to our wonderful members for putting on such good shows. A selection of forthcoming events is listed below – please come along and support us as a backdrop to a great day/night out, and as a local charity supporting musical education and events across the area. We are also getting bookings ready 2020 so if you need a band, please contact us. Saturday, October 12: Oompah Party in aid of Possibilities, Needham Market. Tickets available from: 07919 108747 (see p12) Saturday, October 19: Concert in Needham Market Parish Church. Tickets on the door. Saturday, November 9: RBL Festival of Remembrance Sunday, November 11: Remembrance Services Friday, November 23: Christmas Tree Festival Saturday, November 30: Combs Christmas Fayre Wednesday, December 4: Christmas Tree Festival Saturday, December 14: Snowfiesta & URC Christmas Concert
Land opposite Holy Trinity Church: A detailed planning application has still not been received.

Land to the west of Thorney Green Road: We believe that the land is still offered for sale. A detailed planning application will need to be made once the land has been sold to a house builder.
STOWMARKET CHORALE
Traffic and Parking Near Schools A request for a PCSO to witness the drop-off and pick-up in Thorney Green and a range of road safety issues was made and a visit has taken place. We have asked for further visits during the autumn term and a report back of action taken. Keith Welham raised the problem of road safety near schools at a recent Police and Crime Panel meeting and, as a result, a task group is to be set up to scrutinise the roles of the police and county council; the aim is to come up with recommendations on how improvements can be made. Locality Budget This fund is available for local projects run by parish councils or other local groups, or for new projects. If you have a project which will be of value to the community, please contact Keith Welham for an application form or an informal discussion. As the schoolchildren returned for a new year with exciting learning ahead of them, so too the singers of Stowmarket Chorale began their new programme of work. Under the skilled leadership of Tom Appleton and accompanist William Baldry, the choir will be coached, shaped and refined in the work of J S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, to produce a marvelous concert to entertain friends and families at Stowmarket’s United Reformed Church on Saturday 30 November. OUT & ABOUT SODS – LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
STOWMARKET CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL
Head on down to the woods this December with Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s production of the classic pantomime Little Red Riding Hood – but beware of that big bad wolf!
The application forms to decorate a tree at Stowmarket Christmas Tree Festival have been pouring in which shows it is going to be another fantastic festival. This year will be our fifteenth year and there are various special touches lined up. The Christmas trees will be in Stowmarket Parish Church, Abbots Hall in the Museum of East Anglian life, Stowmarket library and, new this year, some of the trees in the garden of Red Gables will be decorated as part of the Christmas Tree Festival.
Red Riding Hood (played by Lauren Apps) lives in the quiet village of Nether Regions with her mother Ruby and her grandmother Granny Smith. Events take an unusual turn when Red and her friends are invited to visit a museum opened by the charming Professor Lupus, who may not be all he seems. Meanwhile, Granny Smith has to cope with a severe cash shortage, not helped by the rent being raised by Squire Ponsonby-Smythe and his bumbling sidekicks Smash and Grab knocking on her door, while a woodcutter named Jack falls head over heels for the Squire’s daughter. Will it all end in tears or will it be a happily ever after for all? Directed by Craig Fisher and with a script by Tracy Rogers, Little Red Riding Hood is certain to have audiences laughing, singing, booing and hissing this Christmas. Little Red Riding Hood is on at The Regal Theatre, Stowmarket from Tuesday 3 to Sunday 8 December. Performances are at 7.30pm Tuesday to Friday, and noon and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are £14/£12 with an opening night offer of £10 a ticket for the Tuesday performance. Tickets are available from The Regal: 01449 612825 / www.regalstowmarket.co.uk Photos by Carrie Chadwick
Decorating a tree is open to all groups, organisations, schools and businesses, as well as families, friends and individuals. There’s no charge to decorate a tree, but we ask that you follow the themes. Suggestions of how to decorate your tree can be given and guidelines are produced to make your experience a happy one. Last year there were more than 450 trees and the parish church alone received 31,000 visitors, so if you would like to be part of this major community event please get in touch with the venues for more details or an application form. OUT & ABOUT PRENATAL MASSAGE – BUSTING THE PREGNANCY BLUES A mother’s body undergoes many changes during pregnancy, initially with morning sickness, disruption to periods and bleeding. As the pregnancy progresses a prospective mother can expect the usual weight gain, tiredness, fatigue and swelling in hands and feet. Dizziness can also be caused from increases in blood volume, which helps provide the baby with nutrients for growth. Hormone level changes can create mood swings and muscle tightness. The body also produces a chemical that relaxes the ligaments of the body to aid in the birth process. The resultant ligament softening can create lower back pain as well as pains elsewhere around the body as the joints have less support. As the baby grows it causes the mothers weight to shift forwards which creates a postural challenge leading to the potential for lower back, shoulder and neck pain. Walking can become affected, as baby grows further leading to potential issues around the legs and feet for mother-to-be. The growing and altering position of baby later on can lead to some pressure on the sciatic nerve leading to nerve irritation and pain. Being pregnant can also have a psychological effect on the mother with increased stress sometimes leading to anxiety and depression. It’s really tough being pregnant. The good news is there is evidence that massage can help alleviate some of these aches and pains. It may also help manage some of the symptoms of other health concerns that can be associated with pregnancy.
THE REGAL IN OCTOBER Earlier this week one of our regular customers suggested that we change the name of the building from the Regal Theatre to the Downton Abbey Theatre. He was making fun of just how many times we’ve already played the Downton Abbey film. We have screened it a lot (42 times in two weeks), but it’s a great film and it’s been extremely popular, so we’re showing it even more this month! If you’ve already seen the Downton Abbey film or really don’t want to, we still have a whole host of other films to keep you entertained. We’re particularly pleased to have been asked to be part of the prestigious Film Feast film festival that takes place in venues from October 4-7. We’re screening the 1996 family favourite Matilda on October 5. When the schools break up for the October half term holiday the new Shaun the Sheep film is sure to keep children from four to 104 entertained. Ad Astra: Astronaut Roy McBride undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe. Downton Abbey: The continuing story of the Crawley family, wealthy owners of a large estate in the English countryside in the early 20th century. Matilda: Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable. The Goldfinch: A boy in New York is taken in by a wealthy Upper East Side family after his mother is killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Kitchen: The wives of New York gangsters in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1970s continue to operate their husbands’ rackets after they’re locked up in prison.
A specific pregnancy massage, performed by a qualified Massage Therapist, will provide the mother with the upmost comfort, with Mum lying on her side and the baby bump supported by pillows. Massage can be extremely beneficial to mother and baby, alleviating many of the symptoms associated with the changes and health concerns mentioned above.
IT: Chapter 2: Twenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back.
Improved circulation helps distribute nutrients around the body and across the placenta, whilst improvements to the lymphatic system aids in elimination of the waste products our body produces, as well as helping to reduce the swelling around the ankles. The lymphatic system has a huge effect on the body’s immune system, so improvements here can aid the body’s response to infection and healing.
Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon: When an alien with amazing powers crashlands near Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun the Sheep goes on a mission to shepherd the intergalactic visitor home before a sinister organization can capture her.
Massage stimulates the muscles to feel better, easing areas of tension and tightness. Improved muscle relaxation can aid with improving posture, function and reduce pressure on nerves leading to reductions in pain. There can be notable physiological benefits that reduce stress and anxiety and can induce deep relaxation, aid sleep and promoting greater sense of well-being and emotional calm. Shortness of breath from a tight diaphragm as the baby grows can be reduced with massage easing respiratory discomfort. Headaches and muscle cramps can also be reduced with regular massages. By having regular specific pregnancy massage the expectant mother can feel both emotionally and physically supported during this time of change, helping her be more aware of her body and aiding relaxation during labour, which may can result in shorter less painful birth. Massage during pregnancy can also be beneficial for the baby as the happy well-being hormones we release called endorphins are passed between mother and baby over the placenta. Hustlers: Inspired by the viral New York Magazine article, Hustlers follows a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients.
UglyDolls: An animated adventure in which the free-spirited UglyDolls confront what it means to be different, struggle with a desire to be loved, and ultimately discover who you truly are is what matters most. Joker: Failed comedian Arthur Fleck encounters violent thugs while wandering the streets of Gotham City dressed as a clown. Disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow dissent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. Never Let Go: After a man’s family dies in what appears to be a murder, he gets a phone call from one of the dead, his niece. He’s not sure if she’s a ghost or if he’s going mad, but as it turns out, he’s not. Away from the films, we have live music from Shawn Cuddy and Event Cinema screenings of Billy Connolly’s last stand-up comedy world tour and a Midsummer Night’s Dream from the National Theatre.

OUT & ABOUT BOYS’ BRIGADE BAND LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB As our August meeting was after the deadline for submissions we have two meetings to tell you about this month. Our speaker for August was Estelle Mann. Estelle has visited us before, showing us how to make decorations using gelatine. This time her subject was sugar flowers, in particular Dahlias. Always viewed as a complicated flower to make, Estelle made every stage achievable and created some beautiful results.
Stowmarket Boys Brigade Band is looking for new members. Anyone interested, male or female, is welcome. No musical experience is needed, just a willingness to learn a new skill. Tuition will be given and there’s no fee to join or attend the band.
Our speaker for September was Rachel Farnham of Regency Cakes in Exning near Newmarket, so quite a local for us. Rachel has visited us many times before and is a very gifted sugar crafter, with experience in all aspects of sugar craft. Her overriding skill is with royal icing and all its many uses. This time she decorated a two tier cake with scrolls and lattice work, a very traditional style of royal icing work, but one that requires tremendous skill and it was obvious that Rachel has this in abundance. A very enjoyable and instructive evening and we look forwards to her returning again soon.
We meet at the Boys’ Brigade Hall in Combs Ford on Thursday evenings at 7pm. If you are interested in joining please come along one evening or email us at: stowmarketboysbrigadeband@yahoo.com
Our demonstrator on October 14 will be club member Jean who has come up with her own unique way of cutting, rolling and folding sugar paste to make decorations. This will certainly be an interesting evening and guaranteed to be something new to us all, so something to look forwards to.

BOUNDARIES AND BOUNDARY AGREEMENTS It’s a common misapprehension that a title plan for a registered title shows the boundary of the property in question with a high degree of accuracy. Such plans are not designed to do this, though it is possible to follow a procedure whereby a boundary is determined by the Land Registry with a high degree of accuracy, but that is rare. In the main, title plans are drawn in line with the ‘General Boundaries’ rule which means that the red line show on the plan is a reasonable interpretation of where the boundary is for a particular property.
not in writing, it is obviously far more sensible for the agreement to be written down, and signed by both parties, so that it forms a clear record of the arrangement. In addition to the written terms, a plan will be essential to such an agreement. It will also be important that the plan is as accurate as possible, preferably drawn up by a professional surveyor who will be in a position to measure carefully the boundary that needs to be recorded. A clear and accurate boundary agreement is usually much more straightforward than having the boundary determined by the Land Registry under its formal procedure that I’ve mentioned above.
This also means that there could be a degree of difference between what is shown on the title plan and how this is then translated to the position on the ground. It may be appropriate, or useful, or even as a means of resolving the dispute, for neighbours to agree the position of a boundary line between two properties by using a Boundary Agreement. While, in theory, it is possible for a Boundary Agreement to be enforceable if it is

ROYAL NAVAL ASSOCIATION In September the Sea Cadet training brig, TS Royalist paid a visit to Ipswich to undergo a short maintenance period, and during its time alongside, on a wonderful summer evening, shipmates from Stowmarket RNA were delighted to take up an invitation from the ship’s captain, Lieutenant Commander Roy Taylor, RN (SCC) to look around the brig. It was a cracking evening, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. To thank Roy and his crew for their hospitality, we took our hosts ashore for a drink in a local watering hole, where we wished them fair winds and following seas. Following a tradition that is observed throughout the Royal Navy, the branch will be hosting its Trafalgar Night Dinner on October 18 to mark the events of 21 October 1805 when off Cape Trafalgar, Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson led the British fleet to victory against a combined French and Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. Though Nelson lost his own life just as the battle was won, it was a victory that led to over 100 years of Pax Britannica and the Royal Navy’s domination of the high seas. For more information about the branch, email: enquiries@rumoldboys-rna.org.uk ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION STOWMARKET BRANCH The association has held several events to commemorate the Battle of Britain, including a Battle of Britain dinner in the RBL Club where our guest of honour was the Town Mayor, Mr Paul Ekpenyong and his consort, who were welcomed by our Branch President, Arthur White. On September 15, Battle of Britain Day, a church service was held in the parish church, also attended by the mayor and his consort along with some of the town councillors. Many standards were paraded by the local military organisations and some from the civilian services. Light refreshments were served in the RBL Club following the service. September is our big month for fundraising – raising money for the RAF Association’s Wings Appeal. All the money raised will go to help our continuing welfare work. We have also had our annual Brew for the Few in the United Reform Church Hall. This is one of our biggest fundraisers with many stalls and a grand draw. We served coffee/tea with a cake or scone and ploughman’s lunches. We held a street collection in Stowmarket Town Centre and we would like to thank the people of Stowmarket and other Mid Suffolk areas for giving so generously. We would also like to thank Tesco at Cedars Park, Morrisons Ipswich and Morrisons Hadleigh for allowing us to collect at their stores. In addition to this, we have been given a date to collect at the Solar Store in Combs Ford. Many thanks to all those stores for their co-operation. Since our last report our members have enjoyed a day out to Lowestoft and a river trip from Oulton Broad. Unfortunately, it was the hottest day of the year! We also visited the Kelvedon Secret Bunker in Essex, built in the 1950s to house up to 600 military and civilian personel, including the Prime Minister, in the event of a nuclear war. We meet on the first Wednesday in the month at the RBL Club. For further information, please contact our secretary on 01449 676871.

OUT & ABOUT STOWUPLAND LOCAL HISTORY GROUP NEWS FROM RED GABLES The main event this month has been our festival in a day. A large group of volunteers have helped us to have a great time with 12 different bands and acts on the stage playing a wide variety of music. There was lots of children’s fun organised by Julie Sullivan, a book reading and author session for children from Katharine Eccles Horn, people were trying out folk dancing and musical instruments, exploring the garden and generally relaxing under the redwood trees. The barbecue was very popular with tasty sausages and burgers from M&M butchers in Stowupland, all cooked by David Randall and Zoe Lynch from Oddfellows. Our lunch club volunteers Glynis Rooney, Maddy Baker and Margaret Rush kept people going with plenty of teas, coffees and homemade cakes. Red Gables staff, trustees and volunteers and their families all worked incredibly hard to make the day a success. Around 150 people came to the event and we raised over £550 towards Red Gables projects. The money was raised through ticket sales, food, donations and a raffle. We would also like to thank the Museum of East Anglian Life, the CoOp, Buildbase, the Regal Cinema, Stowmarket Town Council, Tesco, Adnams and Greene King for their help with various items. We hope that next year will be even bigger and better! The Garden Project has recently taken delivery of a shipping container which will enable safe and secure storage for the tools and equipment that are used to keep the garden in such good condition. This was funded by the Big Lottery’s Awards for All and the Geoffrey Burton Charitable Trust. Funding News We are very pleased to report that we have been awarded £4,600 from the Sapphire fund at Suffolk Community Foundation towards our new Sensory Ark Project. This will promote art and activities in the garden at Red Gables to combat loneliness, mental health problems and help people to feel better about themselves and learn new skills. It will also create a sensory garden and enable outreach to spread horticultural skills and other activities. Assistant Manager Robert Horn VOLUNTEER DAY AT RED GABLES, STOWMARKET On Tuesday 8 October, Red Gables in Stowmarket is hosting a Volunteer Day. The event is in Redwoods, in the grounds of Red Gables, Ipswich Road, Stowmarket IP14 1BE between 10am and 2pm. Admission is free. Wednesday 2 October: To Relieve Need and Distress – The Story of East Anglian Almshouses by Sarah Doig Almshouses have a long and rich history, stretching back to our medieval monasteries. Sarah will chart the evolution of the almshouse, exploring the life of these institutions from the perspective of both donor and beneficiary. She will also take a look at the differing styles of architecture as well as dipping into the various rules and regulations the inhabitants had to adhere to if they were to keep their highly-prized place in the almshouse! Wednesday 6 November: A Life in Churches by Roy Tricker Roy Tricker really needs no introduction. For many years he has been a champion of Suffolk Churches, originally as a regional officer with The Churches Conservation Trust. He has written countless church guides as well as contributing to books on the subject. He was recently awarded a welldeserved B.E.M. for his work. Some of our members will recall his tour of Gipping Chapel with our group a few years ago. Tonight he talks about his passion for the county’s churches. We meet at 7.30pm in Stowupland Village Hall IP14 4BQ. Visitors are always welcome and refreshments are available. Admission is £1 for members, £3 for non-members. OUT & ABOUT THE NEW MASONRY STOVE AT ORCHARD BARN Autumn is on her way and it’s getting cooler. At Orchard Barn we mostly run courses during the warmer months. However, with demand for heritage skills increasing we are extending our season. With this in mind volunteers and trainees have built a mammoth masonry stove.
STOWMARKET & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB This month’s meeting will be held on Wednesday 23 October at 7.30pm at Woolpit Village Hall. It will be the club’s AGM and, as always, it will also be our annual competition entitled Harvest Time. Following the business of the evening, and the judging of the competition, there will be a talk by Ruth Miller about Foundlings. All are welcome.
STOWMARKET RAMBLERS Sunday 6 October: 6 mile walk near Saxmundham. Park and meet in the car park accessed from Saxmundham High Street at 10.30am / GR. TM 386632. Leader: 07539 536673 These thermally efficient stoves have been used in colder countries for centuries. The heat is retained in the huge mass of the stove which is built from clay lump blocks we’ve made from our own subsoil. We’ve even made our own earth mortar to stick the blocks together, along with a clay render on the outer face of the stove. Better still, our stove will run on the many oak offcuts left over from our framing projects! They stay warm for 24 hours on a single firing. While we’ve made most of the building materials for our stove, we’ve also had to purchase new readymade items too, such as the lengthy flue, cast fire doors and a myriad of fire bricks that make up the internal channels that circulate hot gases throughout the stove. Long story short, we’ve started a fundraising campaign to help fund these costs. To support the fundraising campaign, volunteers and supporters of the community project have made and donated items for us to sell. They are crafted by hand from Suffolk trees and make very beautiful and environmentally sound gifts. So with Christmas almost on the horizon we have created a pop-up craft area in the main barn. It will be open from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during October. So, if you like what we do and would like to support our fundraising campaign, do drop in and buy some delightful and unique gifts. Orchard Barn is just to the south west of Mill Road, Battisford IP14 2LY. Come and see the stove in action too! www.orchardbarn.org.uk
STOWMARKET WILDLIFE GROUP Wednesday 30 October, 7.30pm at Stowupland Village Hall: Pests and Diseases of Trees, an illustrated talk with Sid Cooper Sid, from the Forestry Commission, will give an overview of the major pests and diseases currently affecting our woodlands and their management, what pests and diseases may be coming next, and what we can do to prevent tree pests and diseases from getting established, or to prevent or slow their spread and the damage they do.
Sunday 13 October: 6 mile walk in Long Melford and Bridge Street. Park and meet in the free car park opposite entrance to Melford Hall at 10am / GR. TL 865462. Leader: 07795 420512 Sunday 20 October: 6.4 mile walk around Badley and Battisford. Park and meet in large lay-by on Badley Hill, B1113 at 10am / GR. TM 078560. Leader: 01449 672168
USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, MAKE IT DO, OR DO WITHOUT New England Proverb On walks over the past few days in Stowmarket, I have picked up a large garden planter, a larger storage box and a pint glass, all thrown into bushes along the way. Delight was tinged with guilt as I noticed how much litter was around. Why not pick up that too? The American humourist David Sedaris was appalled at the swathes of litter in the UK when he moved here. He acted and has spent hours each day picking it up. His accounts are funny but shaming. Referring to the area he covered he said: “You can tell where my territory ends and the rest of England begins,” he wrote. “It’s like going from the rose arbour in Sissinghurst to Fukushima after the tsunami.” A newspaper report continued: Sedaris told the communities and local government committee Britain was like a trash can. “You have to go deep into Europe to find it so bad. I have never seen anything like this in Japan or France. It’s obviously a cultural problem. “It’s bad for the spirit to walk through filth. Littering is important. It’s disgraceful. Peek into a hedge here and it’s like a trash can... In London you’ll see trees with bags of dog mess under them.” Rather than just complaining about it, could we each pick up a piece of litter a day and make a difference? Michael Langan
Admission is £2.50 including refreshments. Hearing loop available on request. Suffolk Wildlife Trust Christmas Cards and gifts will also be on sale. John Thompson 01449 676471 / swtstowmarket@gmail.com

Schools / SPORT WOODLANDS PRE-SCHOOL
COMBS FORD PRIMARY SCHOOL
Woodlands Pre-school is proud of how far it has come since opening in 1974 to serve the village of Combs Ford, with two members of staff and a handful of children, to a purpose built pre-school serving Combs Ford and the wider area and more than 60 children on the register.
In July we said goodbye to 60 pupils who had spent the first seven years of their schooling with us. They all went on to high school with a great send off. Parents were invited to a leavers assembly and awards ceremony with entertainment provided by the very talented Year 6 leavers.
Many people will remember them as Combs Ford Pre-school in the Boys’ Brigade Hall. Since 1974 many things have changed, but many others have stayed the same, which is part of their success. Current manager Jane Riches joined in 1999 and childcare practitioner Mandy Sillett in 2000. Although the pre-school now runs 51 weeks a year with a considerably higher number of staff and children, basic family values are still at the heart of this local business. Above all it’s the children who matter.
We have welcomed our new intake of Reception children with a parent’s picnic on the first day. For the first few days each child buddied up a with a Year 6 pupil for lunch and playtime. We also welcomed children who started school for the first time.
Rebranding to Woodlands Pre-school in 2017 when moving to a purpose built building on Lavenham Way has been a challenge and an adventure. Clearly nothing is too difficult for the 10 members of staff who are so proud to say they have been graded ‘Good’ by their recent OFSTED visit, which for a preschool in its infancy is an amazing feat. All 10 members of staff are from Combs Ford or Stowmarket. Not only being a local employer, they also enjoy ties with other local communities such as Woodfield Court, which gives the children a fantastic opportunity to interact in new situations. Woodlands also work closely with West Suffolk College providing opportunities for apprenticeships and work experience.
We are all now back after the sunny summer break and there’s lots planned for the coming year. We are looking forward to the residential trips, school plays, Christmas festivities, visitors to the school and visits outside the school.
The school is hosting open mornings on Wednesdays 9 and 16 October for parents and children who will be starting school for the first time. On these days there will be the opportunity to have a tour of the school, meet some of the teachers, pick up useful information and ask any questions parents and carers may have. If you would like to come along please contact the school (details below) for more information. INORI AIKIDO DOJO Hot days are well gone and autumn is here again! We’ve been training hard in our dojo and attended two consecutive summer schools in Worcester led by very high ranked Japanese Aikido teachers, Miyamoto and Seki Sensei.
Since 1974, 1,883 children have passed through Combs Ford Pre-school, now Woodlands Pre-school. Registers are already almost full for the next academic year, and as Woodlands also provide full wrap-around care and an exciting holiday club they really are offering everything! So what’s next? Watch this space...
A number of Inori students went for their grading in Aikido, as well as in other martial arts (Karate, Iaido and Taekwondo) they have been practising in parallel. Safe falling training for ages 55+ came to Woolpit in June and we learned how to prevent falling and how to avoid serious injuries caused by falling.
www.woodlandspreschool.org.uk
WOOD LEY COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Over the summer break we have completed two projects to improve facilities for our children. To enhance our already extensive outdoor learning areas, the foundation garden has been redesigned with the installation of artificial grass and a new play structure. The improvements will allow the children to access the play equipment throughout the winter months. Also over the summer break, as part of the PPG Communities Project, a team of painters redecorated the main hall and the foundation classrooms. We would like to thank PPG for their work and are delighted with the results. This term we already have exciting events in our diary, including a visit from the children’s author Rachel Jane, an animal discovery day, a field trip to Felixstowe, a residential trip for Year 6 children to Thorpe Woodlands and our Open Air Harvest Festival on October 3. We have also planned several open days for parents and children due to start school in September 2020. There will be opportunities to meet staff and have a guided tour of the school. We are always immensely proud of our older children who help on the tours as they speak enthusiastically about school and learning. If you would like to attend one of these events the dates are as follows and no pre-booking is necessary: Tuesday 5 November at 9.30am and Wednesday 8 January at 2pm.

Our agenda continues to be extremely busy. On Saturday 5 October, Inori Dojo has the great pleasure of hosting a one-day seminar with Peter Brown Shihan, 6 Dan Aikikai. We are also excited to announce that October 24 is an Aikido Open Day. Between 7 and 9pm, children and adults are all invited to come along for a free trial. No booking needed, no experience needed, just turn up. At the beginning of November we plan a trip to Transylvania where Inori students will attend a weekend seminar instructed by the Aikido legend Christian Tissier, the very first non-Japanese Shihan awarded 8 Dan, the highest rank now granted in the Aikikai system. If you have never tried Aikido, it’s a dynamic Japanese martial art suitable for men and women of any age, size and build. The art focuses on using the attacker’s movement against them and include a combination of empty-handed techniques, along with weapons including sword, staff and knife, all practiced in a safe and friendly environment. Regular classes run at Woolpit Village Hall on Thursday nights and are taught by Sensei Adrian Munteanu, 4 Dan Aikikai, Fukushidoin. Sensei Adrian is Coach Level 1 and 2 qualified, DBS checked and first aid qualified. Sensei Adrian: 07793 658748 / inoridojo@yahoo.com Facebook: @Inori Dojo www.inoridojo.wixsite.com/aikidosuffolk

SPORT ELMSWELL BOWLS CLUB News from the Bowling Green, Stowupland We have reached the point of the bowling season whereby we can say “and so another league season ends” with just in-house matches to be played and the final event – a visit from the East Anglia Kit Car Club mentioned in last month’s edition – taking place on September 22. As for the final league matches, the August results are shown below. In the September issue we mentioned that our Tuesday evening team has been relegated and the remaining teams fared as follows: Monday evening, Stowmarket League Division 3, third place; Tuesday afternoon, Stowmarket League Division 3, third from bottom; Wednesday evening, Stowmarket Triples League, third place. Half way through the season we felt we were generally performing well; then we went into decline! However, the important thing is we all enjoyed our matches which were played on the whole in a good friendly spirit. The outcome of all our in-house competitions will be announced in the November issue. David Begg Monday – Stowmarket League Division 3 Aug 5: v Old Newton B / Lost 73-74 (Points 2-5) Tuesday afternoon – Stowmarket League Division 3 Aug 6: v Thornham Magna B / Lost 24-46 (1-6) Aug 13: v Mendlesham / Lost 38-40 (2-5) Aug 20: v Gipping Valley / Lost 24-38 (0-7) Wednesday – Stowmarket Triples League Aug 7: v Walsham le Willows / Won 73-61 (5-2) Aug 14: v Gipping Valley / Lost 42-51 (1-6) Aug 21: v Thornham Magna / Won 74-60 (6-1)

SPORT / Church News STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB A fantastic youth season drew to an end as youngsters, parents and friends enjoyed a barbecue, games of rounders and presentations of achievement. Since March 25 weekly coaching sessions ran on Monday evenings throughout the season with only one falling to the weather. On top of this our Under 9, 11, 13 and 15 teams played over 50 competitive matches, winning over half. The highlight of the year was the Under 11, Super 8 County Final where we fell just short against a very strong Copdock team.
STOWMARKET SWIMMERS THRIVE IN THE OPEN WATER Stowmarket Swimmers had fantastic success at this year’s Regional Open Water competition held at Whitlingham Country Park, Norwich on July 21. Joe Fletcher came fourth in the East Region, narrowly missing out on a place at nationals. Kim Lynch also brought home gold at this Nationals Masters event. Way to go Stow! Top Left: Kim Lynch, Swim England National Masters Open Water 2km Gold for 60-64yrs Top Right: Peter Lynch, County Senior 2km Gold & East Region 2km Gold 5059yrs Bottom Right: Joe Fletcher, Boy’s 5km Gold (17yrs) Bottom Left: Megan Alvarez, Girl’s 3k Gold (14yrs)
As the sun set over Chilton Fields our coaches and volunteers were thanked for their contribution, given free of charge, so that membership fees are kept to an absolute minimum, encouraging more youngsters to enjoy the wonderful game of cricket at Stowmarket Cricket Club. Our objective remains to ensure that boy and girls of all abilities take a full part, enjoy and progress into our senior sides. Stowmarket’s success at senior level would not have been achieved without this development so long let it continue. For further information about joining Stowmarket Cricket Club please contact Clive Witherly: 01359 240019 / wigg51@btinternet.com
STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB On Sunday 8 September we hosted our biggest day of the year in terms of play activity and quality. The 14 matches, ranging from U10 juniors right up to senior mixed doubles, were played in near perfect conditions. The weather was mercifully kind with a light breeze and partial sunshine across the courts. In the past we have coped with everything from persistent rain to unrelenting sunshine so it really was a lovely way to conclude the summer season. As is tradition we had the trophies presented by the town mayor before enjoying a tea provided by the members. Some new names going on the silverware again this year along with some names, still hanging-on, from years past! The next exciting piece of news is that we’re planning to install our world famous, and highly envied, winter dome around October 8. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on the forecast as we can’t inflate the membrane in anything above a light breeze. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan and the autumn/ winter tennis can get started in the comfort of calm, dry and frost free courts. By the time this issue plops onto your doormat we will have winners from the final Grand Slam event of the year, the U.S. Open. Serena Williams has utterly destroyed her last two opponents in well under an hour so the smart money must be on her at the moment, but you never know, there’s always room for a surprise! The men’s title is a little more difficult to predict as Federer has been beaten and Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury, which just leaves Rafael Nadal as the last of the big three. With some new talent getting ever-closer, I expect we may have seen the turning of the tide and that dominant trio may be on the way down. There’s lots to do at the club with two morning club sessions, two club evenings and several sessions for both juniors and adults to get started. If you’d like more information, just send me a line. See you on court. Senior Club Coach Chris Cunningham chris@chriscoaching.plus.com

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND: COMBS & FINBOROUGH GROUP It has been a fun-filled, busy summer in the Combs and Great Finborough Group of Churches this year. Messy Church continued throughout the summer at Great Finborough with some of the regular attendees joining the J Team for a week of activities in Onehouse at the beginning of the summer holidays. Now the autumn days are with us our minds turn to harvest. During September, Harvest Festival Services have already raised money for various charities, Stowmarket Food Bank being one of these. Don’t panic though; Harvest Festival Services are still taking place in October. church News CHRISTCHURCH, NEEDHAM MARKET Methodist/United Reformed Church, High Street, Needham Market IP6 8AP Minister: The Rev Rita Carr (Methodist) 01449 612619 One of my favourite parts of October is driving along the tree lined A14 and seeing the leaves change, a beautiful array of colours, especially in the glow of the late autumn sunlight. As the leaves fall they then give children and dogs, amongst others, the fun of creating and diving into piles of collected leaves. For adults, there’s the opportunity to do some ‘kicking the leaves’. In the month that Halloween is celebrated and the clocks go back, isn’t it good to remember that light always overcomes darkness? Even one tiny candle makes a difference in the dark. In Christchurch this October we will be remembering that there is a light that never goes out – the Light of the World. We will be celebrating His coming into the world just a few weeks later. With all the uncertainties and concerns we have about what happens after October 31, there will still be light in the darkness. I like Lauren Daigle’s song Light of the World. You can check the whole song out on YouTube. Here is the first verse and chorus: The world waits for a miracle The heart longs for a little bit of hope Oh come, oh come, Emmanuel A child prays for peace on earth And she’s calling out from a sea of hurt Oh come, oh come, Emmanuel. And can you hear the angels singing Glory to the light of the world Glory, the light of the world is here.

UNITED REFORMED CHURCH It’s amazing that as I write the harvest of crops to a large extent finished two weeks ago and yet, following past traditions, many of our churches will only be holding Harvest Celebrations as you read this article. Our church will once again be decorated with the wonderful products and flowers from this region. However, Harvest is also a reminder of all God’s goodness from land, sea and sky. You will be made most welcome at our Ipswich Street church service on September 29 at 10.25am led by William Glasse. William is one of a number of lay leaders who have been leading worship as we await news of a new minister. With summer becoming a distant memory, the many and varied activities connected with us have recommenced their winter programmes and preparations are well underway for our annual Christmas Fayre.
