A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
NEWS
So football season has ended! I’m not exactly a fanatic, but since Jack started playing our weekends are planned around his fixtures (insofar as we ever have a plan). I have spent many, many, many cold and blustery mornings on the sidelines since last September and now it’s getting a little warmer, it all stops and cricket takes over! I propose a swap; winter cricket and summer football. Perhaps I’ll start a petition.
WITNESHAM & SWILLAND VILLAGE SHOW
Camogie (women’s version of hurling) was always my game, but it’s interesting being the parent rather than the player. Mostly I just want Jack to be safe, but a win always makes for a better weekend. When we lose, the post-match analysis goes on and on and on... Every move, every injury, every tiny transgression is discussed adinfinitum and then re-enacted just to prove the point. I feign interest, but usually I’m more focused on defrosting my fingers and toes. All that aside I will miss my Saturday mornings with the mums and dads who turn up whatever the weather. We’ve become quite good friends, as have the boys, and it’s fun to spend time with people who share a common interest, some more vocally than others!
You will have seen the schedule in last month’s In Touch magazine and should be receiving your personal copy this month. If you don’t get one please ask at The Barley Mow, Witnesham School, Skoobs, Witnesham Baptist Church, Liz, Venlo, Juby’s Shoot in Witnesham or Nick at Newlands, Hall Lane, Witnesham. These are also the places where you can post your entry forms up to 2pm on Wednesday, July 11.
I suppose that’s why I get so many submissions from groups and clubs eager to welcome visitors or participants, and I hope those of you looking to connect with others find what you need within these pages. For some the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat may suffice, while others might want to find a new hobby or try a new activity. Getting fit might be your priority or you may want to expand your knowledge of a particular subject by attending talks and demonstrations. Finding people with a similar mind-set, who share your interest and welcome you with open arms is, and I mean this sincerely, life-changing. I’ve seen it happen with my mum. She started playing bridge about five years ago and has made so many new friends as a result. In the last two years she lost one of her best friends to cancer and another moved away to live near her family. Without her bridge ‘gang’ mum would be lost and just as they have supported her through difficult times, she has supported them. If you’re feeling a bit isolated or lonely, I hope you find someone or something in the following pages which encourages you to reach out. And if you know someone who would enjoy or benefit from an opportunity to get out and about, perhaps you could be the one who makes it happen. As I could now that my Saturday mornings are mine again for a little while.

THE ACTIVE WELLBEING SERVICE Would you like to become more active? Then we’re here to help. The Active Wellbeing service run by Active Suffolk is coming to your area from June 3. It’s a service predominantly aimed at people aged 50+ who are inactive, i.e. undertake 30 minutes or less moderate activity per week (moderate means you’re out of breath but are still able to hold a conversation while doing an activity). One-to-one help and support is given through an initial meeting to discuss your requirements and any challenges you may have with accessing activities, e.g. cost, motivation, time, etc. We spend time looking at your lifestyle and what will suit you best to get what you want out of activities, and find the way forward together. The support is free and for a period of three months. All appointments are held weekly in the community, ether at Debenham Library or Leisure Centre, and are informal and non-judgemental, just looking at easy ways to improve your health and wellbeing. You can fill in one of the Active Wellbeing green referral cards at Debenham, Otley or Grundisburgh surgeries or Debenham Leisure Centre and hand it in to the receptionists, or contact Annie directly to book an appointment: 07557 633824 / annie.groves@activesuffolk.org For more information visit: www.activesuffolk.org/awsbandm

NEWS ASHBOCKING NEWS There’s nothing that keeps Ashbocking folk from getting together for social events. We have no village hall, but we do have a church. Now some of you may feel, ‘I would never set foot in a church – I’m a non-believer’. Well, our church is open for all. Once a month we do hold church services, where all are welcome, but at other times of the year we hold particular events that might be described as ‘more frivolous’ and are for the entertainment of us all. The important points are everyone has a good time, we meet up with our neighbours in the village, there’s a strong feeling of community, and as a spin off we raise some money for the church to help towards having a loo! On Saturday, May 18 a quiz was held in the church, with homemade chilli and curry, rice and, for afters, delicious cakes. A bar provided wine, beer, cider and soft drinks, a raffle added to the fun and stars of the evening were our quizmaster and mistress who provided the mentally demanding part of the evening. Thanks to Tony and Sue Rubin who combined efficiency and clear delivery with humour and a great mix of questions for both adults and children. John and Linda Pollard were the prime organisers, with Brenda Forster, Steve and Liz Stegman, Sarah and Steve Wilson and Adine and Kevin Balaam. Fourteen teams of six battled it out. If you weren’t there, you missed out on a great evening. Just check out the Ashbocking ‘What’s App’ site which was buzzing with compliments the next day. So, if you didn’t attend because the quiz was held at a church, think again. At one end of the spectrum it’s a place of worship and ceremony. At the other end it’s a building to bring people together to have a good time. There’s a lot in common with the two! And with 80 people there, it doesn’t even feel cold. But remember to wear socks! Liz Stegman
UPSTAIRS MOW by the barley players Well time marches on and by the time you read this the actors will be into the last month of rehearsals. It’s been a long haul with rehearsals starting at the end of January, so well done to all those concerned for their hard work and commitment. There haven’t been too may village events so far this year and with the closure of the community group just over a year ago we have to make the most of events when they occur. So now it’s up to the locals to come along and support the team and make them feel that their efforts are appreciated. This year’s musical comedy recalls the little known story of when William Shakespeare, while staying in Ipswich and making his way to Otley Hall, decided to drop in to a local inn (later to be known as the Barley Mow) to enquire about his missing uncle Henry (Red) Shakespeare. The result of this stop-over created a special bond between the Bard and the village of Witnesham which is still remembered today and retold in this tale. The Barley Players have created a different type of production this year containing more than 18 original songs. We have not only some fine singers (plus some not so fine), but a group of some brilliant musicians to bring a new level to our productions which I am confident will make your night out one you will remember with fondness and humour. There are eight actors across local villages including five from Witnesham as well as Swilland, Tuddenham and Coddenham, musicians from Ipswich and professional sound and lighting provided through our contact with the New Wolsey Theatre. Sounds too good to be true? Well, hopefully not! This is a performance you don’t want to miss. Full details can be found on our Facebook page (The Barley Players) or you can email me at: henleysteve@btinternet.com

STEP UP TO WALK FOR PARKINSON’S AT GLEMHAM HALL People across Suffolk are being asked to help stop Parkinson’s for good by joining their local Walk for Parkinson’s event at Glemham Hall on Sunday, June 9. The Glemham Hall Walk for Parkinson’s event is one of 45 across the UK set to raise more than £600,000 for charity Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research to find better treatments and a cure for the condition. At this family friendly event distances for walkers include a 1.5-mile, 3.5mile or 5.5-mile route around the beautiful grounds of Glemham Hall. One in 37 of us will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s in our lifetime. This neurological condition affects people of all ages and has more than 40 symptoms including tremor, loss of mobility and dementia. Over the past four years Walk for Parkinson’s fundraisers have raised more than £1.5million for Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research to find a cure – and the charity believes that scientists could now be on the verge of a major breakthrough. Dave Clark, Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011 at the age of 44. Dave is a keen walker himself and he’s encouraging people to sign up to the walk at Glemham Hall. He said: “Parkinson’s UK’s pioneering research gives me hope that we will find a cure for this brutal condition, and we’re now on the verge of major research breakthroughs that could end Parkinson’s for good. “So whatever your age or ability, please sign-up to Walk for Parkinson’s at Glemham Hall and be part of the final push to find a cure.” The registration fee for the event is £12 for adults and £5 for under16s, with team discounts available. Everyone who registers will receive a free Parkinson’s UK t-shirt, fundraising pack and at the end of the walk, a finisher’s medal. Walkers should aim to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. To sign up to the walk, or to find out more, please contact: 020 7963 3912 / fundraising@parkinsons.org.uk or visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk/walkglemham For a full list of the 45 locations in the Walk for Parkinson’s series, visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk/walks

This small acre of land was planted in 2016, with six different types of grasses and sixteen English meadow flowers. Now flowering for the third year, this creates a vital habitat for many insects, animal and birds while playing a significant role in pollination. Alex commented: “We have returned this little pocket of rural Suffolk to its former state and we will be delighted if you can come along to enjoy the beauty of the meadow with us. We will be serving light refreshments on the day and there is ample parking nearby.” Donations gratefully received towards the British Heart Foundation (Suffolk), who fund over £100 million of research each year into heart and circulatory diseases, strokes, vascular dementia and diabetes.

BARHAM HALL PICNIC CONCERT At the time of writing (10 May) there was still 100 of the 450 tickets remaining for Saturday 29 June so we anticipate there will still be some left at only £14 each when you read this. Essential Sounds (an 18-piece Big Band) will again be the main entertainment while we enjoy our picnics in the wonderful setting of Barham Hall gardens courtesy of Mr and Mrs Burrows. We also welcome back Sarah Hitchcock (a local vocalist) who will entertain us with songs from the forties during the band’s two breaks. As usual we will end the evening with a flag waving Last Night of the Proms sing-along led by the band and Sarah. The gates will open at 5.30pm to allow plenty of time for visitors to view the beautiful gardens before the band starts at 7pm. Cheques payable to Claydon and Barham PCC should be sent with a selfaddressed envelope (with stamp if you live outside Claydon & Barham) to Roger Colthorpe, 5 Phillipps Road, Barham IP6 0AZ. It may be a good idea to call 01473 831079 to check availability and reserve tickets pending payment, but otherwise payment will be returned immediately if sold out. All proceeds will go towards the Claydon & Barham Church Fabric Fund to help fund the next major project which is to restore our ancient bells and get them ringing again with hopefully two additional bells. Barham Church bells which have not been rung properly since 1947, but we will hopefully be able to open a concert with a peal of bells in the not too distant future.

CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL We are now in the midst of exam season for our Year 11 students who will finish their exams at the end of this month. Students have made the most of revision days and catch-up clubs and have demonstrated maturity and resilience as they approach their final exams. I wish them the very best of luck for the future and hope that all their hard work will be rewarded with success on results day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank year 11 parents/ carers for their support during the last five years. WITNESHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL At the time of writing (Friday, May 10) the children have been in school for just 12 days since the Easter holidays, but our learning environment has been as rich as ever. Our oldest children start their SATs on Monday, but education is about much more than Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Last week, under the able direction of Mr Richard Gooderham, our seven to nine-year-olds in Class 3 enthralled everyone with their production of the hit musical Yee Ha. The story tells of a mysterious lone girl rider who takes on the crooked mayor, saves Splodge City in the Wild West, and helps the townspeople discover black gold in the saloon’s back yard. There were plenty of silly jokes and some fantastic singing, both by the lead characters and the cast, and parents and governors alike were thrilled by the performance.
THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY The children have been busy experimenting with guttering and pipes. What will fit down? Where will it come out? We have used water and got very wet! Cars of different sizes, balls, sand – just about anything we can think of. It has really developed the language of size, estimating if something will fit, direction and speed of the travel. Can we catch it in a bucket or will it roll away before we get there? Real WOW moments can be seen on the children’s faces as they try and anticipate the direction and speed. T his has been real evidence of their critical thinking as they move the pipes and guttering, having their own ideas of how to use the crates and blocks. Alongside this has been the love of our wild animals, this term seeing them in a Safari Hospital as the children wrap bandages around them and construct caves and beds with blocks. This led nicely on to one of our books, The Giraffe in a Scarf, that has ‘a scarf for a giraffe’ doubling up as a bandage and again leading on to all sorts of rhyming which is ideal for school readiness for those leaving at the end of term. Fine motor control has been supported this term by balancing marbles on golf tees (not as easy as it sounds or looks), that pincer grip being so important for early writing skills. All these fun activities prepare our children to write their name for September. More work is being done on our building and the scaffolding is going back up. We are preparing for our final sports day, summer outing and graduation as we transfer to a school nursery in September with the academy. Although no longer taking those younger children, we are still open to those three years and above, so give us a ring and make a date to visit: 01473 890950
This week we are taking part in Deaf Awareness Week and the children have been creating posters that explore different aspects of what it is to be deaf. They have been learning to sing and sign, and have been performing their new skills in school assembly. Drama and the performing arts engage the creative side of our children in practical, group-based learning and are an important part of life at Witnesham. Creative expression is a great way to build self-confidence and some children find their ‘voice’ while performing. If the rave reviews of Yee Ha are anything to go by, many of our children have indeed found their ‘voice’ this term!

SPORT ANYONE FOR CROQUET?
Ipswich Club Open Day, Sunday, June 9 Ipswich Croquet Club has been a part of Ipswich society for over 100 years, and more recently has produced world and national champions. This year two of its juniors have been selected for the World Schools Championships. Once a sport rated second only to cricket in this country it remains an enthralling game combining physical skill with mental agility. Today croquet is played as much for fun as competitively by people of all backgrounds and ages. In 1900 it became the first Olympic sport to include women. To celebrate this great sport the club is holding a free entry open day on its lawns at Fynn Valley from 10.30am to 3.30pm. This will be a great day out and for many a chance to try something a little different. All the equipment will be provided and club members will be on hand if required to show you the ropes. All you need is a pair of flat-soled shoes. Cakes and refreshments will be available at the pavilion, and the fabulous new Café Terrace will be serving food and drink including a great Sunday lunch which is well worth booking (01473 785267). For further information visit: www.ipswichcrochetclub.com

CHURCH NEWS CHURCH NEWS FROM SWILLAND & ASHBOCKING Marriage and Prayer May seems to be the month where we have had several ‘weeks’ going on. In the last edition of Grapevine, Fred mentioned Christian Aid Week, but in the same week we also had Marriage Week. That week, focusing on relationships, caught my eye because its publicity material mentioned ‘recipes’. A quick look on their website showed there were some mouth-watering ideas for the kitchen, but they also had recipes for the foundations of marriage – like laughter and conversation.
Saturday 29: Mark and Bill are ordained as priests in the Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds, 3.30pm Sunday 30: Benefice Communion – celebrating Mark’s first Eucharist, 11am Grundisburgh
CARLFORD GROUPS Coffee Mornings Ashbocking: First Friday / 10.30am at the home of Jan and Jon Bates of 4 Ashley Grange, Ashbocking Burgh: Occasional throughout the year Clopton: Third Wednesday / 10am-noon Clopton Village Hall Grundisburgh: Possibilities Coffee Morning, 10.30am on Saturday 1 June at Grundisburgh Parish Room
At the end of May there’s another important ‘week’ (it’s actually 11 days from Ascension to Pentecost), Thy Kingdom Come. Thy Kingdom Come has become an important feature of the church calendar because it addresses a foundation of our relationship with God – that of prayer. If human relationships like marriage need recipes of conversation, prayer is our conversation with God. It’s a chance to drink again from the spring of spiritual life but also and importantly to pray for our world around. The exciting thing about both weeks is that they celebrate their subjects, but also understand that at times they aren’t easy and require some effort to be put in. However, the rewards are great. Bishop Michael Curry (who preached at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding last year) calls praying like this is to pray for ‘God’s dream to be realised amongst us’. People are healed and do come to see God’s love for them, but it’s also said that prayer changes the prayer who then changes things.
Otley: Second Thursday, following 9.30am Midweek Communion, at the home of Russell Ling, Grange Farm, Otley Swilland: First Saturday / at the home of Gina Wilden of 7 High Road, Swilland Hobbies Knit and Stitch: First Monday, 10am at the home of Brenda Forster of Little Chimneys, The Green, Ashbocking / third Monday, 10am at the home of Linda and John Pollard of Hawthorns, The Green, Ashbocking Hobbies Group: First Wednesday, Clopton Village Hall, 10am-noon Otley & District Gardening Club: First Monday (see p11) Bridge Club: Every Monday, Grundisburgh Parish Room, 7.30pm Lunches Hasketon Community Lunch: Fourth Thursday, 12.15pm, following 11.30am Holy Communion in the village hall Otley Community Lunch: Fourth Thursday, Otley White Hart, 12.30pm / £6
I’m pretty sure that through my life there have been a whole number of people who have prayed for me, and I for them, all unannounced and unacknowledged. And while I fully believe that prayer directly benefits those people, it also changes me and thus the relationship I have with them.
Burgh Soup Lunch: Occasional throughout the year

CHURCH NEWS WITNESHAM BAPTIST CHURCH Here we are half way through another year and although it’s summer, mind you I’m writing early May, it seems as if we’ve already had the full range of weather! What does the summer hold for you? Holiday season for many, with families having to wait to end of term in July before they can have time away. For those in church this month has a holy day, Sunday, June 9 known as Pentecost. It is linked to the Jewish festival of Pentecost – 50 days or seven Sundays after Easter. For Christians here it is the day we celebrate when the Holy Spirit was given to the Apostles and for all Christians since then. It is difficult to understand let alone to believe that there is a Holy Spirit because how do we describe it? Understanding Jesus is comparatively easy as He did live on this earth as a man. After his death (Good Friday) and resurrection (Easter Day), He was seen by many people and then ascended into heaven where He lives now. Yet as a Christian I know He also lives within my heart and life. It is His Spirit that lives within us and helps us to live life His way. So, we celebrate on June 9 and indeed every day. We’re having our bathroom refurbished as I write. Loads of mess and dust as old tiles ripped from the walls, bath, basin and toilet removed. The latter is a problem as we only have one bathroom/toilet! Fortunately, our daughters live nearby and our neighbour has offered their facilities if desperate. Life can be a total muddle at times can’t it? I’m pleased and thankful that I’ve got family, friends and church folk to help me along the way. Also, the reassurance that Jesus is with me and that He has in many ways travelled ahead of me. Not sure that Jesus experienced the same muddle of bathroom refurbishment though! So, this month while looking forward to holidays may we all find time to help our neighbours, especially if for them it’s a time of muddle or they feel that things in their lives are being ripped out through illness or loss. May we all know the presence and strength of God in our lives. Pastor Andrew DIARY DATES FOR JUNE Morning Services begin at 11am (except when stated otherwise) Sunday, June 2: Morning Service with Pastor Andrew / Holy Communion Sunday, June 9: Morning Service with Pastor Andrew Sunday, June 16: Morning Service with Team Ministry Sunday, June 23: Morning Service with Simon Matholie Sunday, June 30: Joint Benefice Service Family Time Together is every Sunday from 9.30-10.15am. The Churches of the United Benefice of Westerfield and Tuddenham St Martin with Witnesham
In Touch with WTW Why and where are they going? After a great deal of thought, prayer and consultation, benefice priests Revs Alan and Catherine Forsdike are leaving to move to new ministries. Alan has been associated with these villages since November 1974 when, as a callow teenager, he started playing the organ at Tuddenham twice a month: that quickly became weekly. Catherine joined him at services in 1985 but she had been a worshipper at Westerfield since 1978.

After such a long time it will be a wrench to leave but there is never a good time to go. They hope that they will keep in touch with the many friends and acquaintances they have made over the years.
Both of them undertook four years of training whilst still working full-time. Alan was ordained in 2005; Catherine in 2010. Alan has been fulfilling the role of nonstipendiary Priest-in-Charge since 2010. They both stress that they are not retiring but feel the time is right to move out of parish ministry. Alan and Catherine live in their own house in the centre of Ipswich so do not have to move.
