A WORD FROM THE EDITOR There’s an elderly gent I see almost every day walking very, very slowly from the local supermarket carrying the same small plastic bag. I say ‘gent’ because he’s always ‘properly’ dressed in a suit and tie. I like to think he would have worn a hat in his younger days. I wish he still did.

NEWS CABARET NIGHT IS BACK!

His clothes may have seen better days, but there’s a curious dignity about him. He doesn’t appear to make any effort to engage with others, barely lifting his gaze from the path as he proceeds. Nobody stops to speak to him and, despite my curiosity, neither have I. I’ve smiled and mumbled good morning on one or two occasions, but he has never responded. It may be that he didn’t hear me, but it seems more deliberate than that, as if he’s either totally focused on the task in hand or is holding the world at arm’s length for some reason. If this is the case, and my instinct tells me it is, I respect his right to privacy. However, I have created a whole lifestory for him. I think of him as Robert. His wife Celia died several years ago and since then he has been brokenhearted and alone, locking out the world because the pain of her loss is his most precious possession. Celia is with him in everything he does, walking by his side each morning and straightening his tie before he leaves the house. I worry about him too. If I don’t see him for a day or two, I start to panic. I have no idea where he lives or if he has anyone to look out for him. Thankfully he always turns up, but one day he won’t and he’ll never know how much I miss seeing him. Isn’t it odd how strangers find their way into our hearts! Of course, many of us admire, even love movie stars, musicians and football players and look up to people we respect for one reason or another. We are often inspired by the actions of someone we may never meet, Greta Thunberg being a perfect example. It’s important, especially for children, to have role models but I don’t think we have to look very far to find them. Every older person is just someone who was born before us, done most things before us in fact. Everyone has a story. All we have to do is stop to listen. I’m going to make one more attempt with Robert. Perhaps you can find someone who deserves a moment of your time.

Join us for an evening of light music and entertainment Saturday 30 November from 7pm at Witnesham Village Hall After last year’s packed out cabaret night at the village hall we are getting ready for the next one. This year we are supporting FIND and hope to raise enough money to give families less fortunate a better Christmas. Entry is free, donations are welcome. Donations of draw prizes would be much appreciated. Bring your own drink and nibbles. We are looking for performers, so if you can sing, play an instrument, tell a story or perform in any way, this is your chance to perform in front of an appreciative audience. NEWS ASHBOCKING NEWS There’s lots of news this month, some of which relates to next month! The church looked beautiful for the Harvest Festival. It’s yet to take place as I write, but the church is a fitting tribute to All Things Bright and Beautiful. Many folk are busy making things for the Church Christmas Bazaar. It’s going to be another joyous occasion with lots of festive spirit, Christmas purchases, lovely foodstuffs, and an amazing tombola! It would be wonderful to see everyone from Ashbocking supporting the efforts of their fellow parishioners. The date for your diary is Saturday 7 December from 10am-3.30pm. Remember, this is our church, a building dating back over 900 years. It needs various changes to meet the requirements of the present society. Those changes need financing and we now have the go ahead, with only a few further hoops to jump over, with plans to have a toilet facility and a kitchenette. The facilities are for the community, not just for church goers. Please come and support Linda Pollard and her team and help to realise these improvements. If you have any unwanted jewellery, second hand books, nearly new or good condition clothing, brick-a-brac, toys or plants, please get them to Hawthorns, or ring 01473 890836 and somebody will collect your items. Thank you. And if you would like to bake a cake please let us know too. We would be delighted to serve it with a coffee or after a mug of soup. It is with sadness that I have to announce there will be no Ashbocking Arts, Craft & Produce Show next year. It was decided that it was just too much work for the small group of folk who planned and executed the day. We would like to thank those who always turn up to help, to set it all up and to clear up the following day, but there’s so much more to do in the weeks before and no one is getting any younger. If there is anyone out there who would like to take it over, please get in touch. We will be more than willing to pass on our knowledge and experiences. And to put a date in early September in the diary! We do, however, intend to do another June food-band-dance evening, starting earlier to include some children’s activities, and maybe even show ideas for art, photography and crafts (children only). We have a contact with an event organiser, so there could be some exciting new activities. Ever heard of a bucking bronco? However, the children’s activities will require younger folk in the village, with children, to plan and organise. The usual evening will be sorted by Tony and his group of workers. No volunteers, no children activities! Contact Ben Few if you are prepared to help. Ben’s email is: ben@jtfewltd.co.uk Coffee mornings are flourishing in the village. They take place every first Friday in the month. Venues vary each time, so contact either Liz Stegman (01473 785592) or Linda Pollard (see above) to find out where. If you would like to host a coffee morning, do let us know. I need to apologise for not having written the Ashbocking News for a few months. I don’t know where the time goes and being retired doesn’t seem to make it go any slower. I have had a landmark birthday which seemed to take up most of September and our garden, with new beds, more plants and features seems to take most of my time too! Also, it’s a joy to be able to spend time with good friends both in and out of the village. I will try harder in these winter months and if you have any item you would like me to include, please let me know. Or, if you wish to write it yourself, contact details can be found within the magazine.

WITNESHAM VILLAGE HALL I am pleased to record that following the Village Hall Committee meeting on October 2, the following recommendations were made and agreed. The car park will be resurfaced again, hopefully before the winter sets in. The acoustics haven’t been acceptable since, in the main, the removal of the curtains. The matter was discussed at length and various options are now being investigated with the aim of bringing the hall up to an acceptable level, especially when the hall is full of people. Niall Austin has offered to provide bar and buffet services for future events. Niall is now a member of the committee and has also kindly offered to donate some profit to hall funs. With the cark park and the acoustic s to sort, the cost of running the hall is a concern, especially as, with winter approaching, we don’t have a prepayment system for heating in place. In view of this, and to make sure the hall doesn’t fall into a loss situation, hire charge will increase from January 1. The increase will be minimal for local clubs and a little higher for others. Also the required deposit will be higher due to a number of problems through the last year. Ann Debenham is responsible for dealing with hall hire and can be contacted if you require further information, but the prices will also be displayed on the noticeboard. Village Recorder Steve Henley

JAZZ AT THE MOW I am pleased to record that I attended a jazz night at the Barley Mow on Saturday 28 September. There was no admission cost, but those present were treated to a night of very high quality jazz from the Gavin Skeggs quartet, Taratinos. How the pub managed to pull this off is quite remarkable. I doubt if it has ever witnessed such quality before. A dicky-bird tells me that Gavin may be a friend of the publican’s brother, but however it happened, it was an unfortunate miss for anyone who couldn’t be there. A week later Taratinos performed at the infamous Ronnie Scott’s nightclub in London Well done the Barley Mow; we can’t wait to see how you are going to follow that! Steve Henley

CHRISTMAS EVENTS AT TALITHA KOUM Talitha Koum is holding a Christmas Fete at The Hope Centre on Saturday 23 November from 11am-2pm. There will be crafts made by the residents for sale, refreshments, games, tombola and raffle. Please do come along if you can. On Wednesday 18 December Talitha Koum will be celebrating Christmas with carols outside from 5pm. Soup and mince pies will be available. We hope you will join us.

Thursday 12 December: Talitha Koum’s Carols in St Mary’s Church, Witnesham at 6pm Wednesday 18 December: Carols, soup and mince pies at the Hope Centre, Wash Lane, Witnesham, 5pm CHRISTMAS APPEAL FROM FIND On behalf of Families in Need I am writing to ask if you might feel able to support our Christmas appeal. Throughout the year we have continued to run our food bank with around 3,000 emergency food bags already having been distributed as I write this in the first week of October. Our volunteers have also delivered household goods and furniture as well as supporting people who are rough sleepers. Last year’s Christmas appeal helped 2,000 needy people with large food hampers and gifts, showing that many people cared about their plight. If you can donate any items of Christmas fayre, such as a Christmas cake or log, a tin or box of biscuits or chocolates, we shall be able to add these to the hampers which will have been packed with food to cover meals over the festive period. Please deliver to me or arrange for me to collect these at the latest by Wednesday 4 December to allow volunteers to add your donations to the food boxes and then deliver them before Christmas. We shall be most grateful for any help you can give. Heather Cade, 5 Coopers Close, Witnesham / 01473 785464

HELMINGHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY OPEN MORNING Wednesday 13 November, 9.30-11.30am We look forward to welcoming you to our school where you can meet the students and staff and see our happy and vibrant school in action! There will also be a selection of samples of our tasty lunches for you to try. Helmingham Primary School and Nursery, Helmingham, Stowmarket IP14 6EX

CLAYDON HIGH SCHOOL On Wednesday 25 September we welcomed more than 600 prospective parents/carers and their children to our annual open evening. Following a short presentation, visitors toured the school and experienced our fantastic resources and facilities. Staff and students were on hand to showcase their work and visitors took part in various activities including: exploding Jelly Babies in Science; French and Spanish food tasting in Languages; a rowing challenge in PE and much, much more! I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 200 plus Claydon High School student helpers who helped to make the evening such a success. Much of the feedback I received from visitors commented upon how helpful, friendly and polite our students were. In other areas of the school, the PE department has had an eventful start to the term with football, netball and table tennis fixtures and a crosscountry competition. Year 10 GCSE PE students also had the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills when they ran a successful Year 6 Sports Morning for in excess of 130 students from our feeder primary schools. A range of activities were on offer, including table tennis, football, netball and fitness and rowing challenges. Our Year 10 Leaders made the sessions really fun and competitive and were a credit to the school. Year 11 students have been particularly busy with various activities including: a Business Studies trip to Colchester Zoo, where students learnt more about the zoo as a business; Geography students took part in field trips to Southwold and Ipswich Marina; Design and Technology students in Years 10 and 11 visited the Design Museum in London, which included a handson workshop with their on-site designers; finally, all of Year 11 visited the Suffolk Skills Show at Trinity Park in Ipswich where students were able to visit stands, gather information and talk to employers and representatives from many different local businesses and industries, ranging from farming and agriculture, engineering and construction to law, finance and HM Forces. Mince Pies and Music We are looking forward to welcoming members of the local community along to our community Mince Pies and Music afternoon on Monday 16 December, noon-2pm. Please pop this date in your diaries and book your place by phoning 01473 836110. If you would like to visit the school and see us in action, please come along to one of our open mornings. The next one is on Tuesday 26 November. Please telephone my PA, Ms J Saunders, on 01473 836110 to book a place.

STONHAM ASPAL PRIMARY SCHOOL It’s quite incredible how quickly time seems to fly by. We are now two weeks away from completing our first half-term of the academic year 2019-20. Class R children have settled in and are already confidently finding their way around and making new friendships. Our new all-weather track is proving to be a big hit with the children, keeping them all healthy and active. We have already had a whole school poetry day and we are now getting organised and ready for our Harvest Service. We shall be setting off on our residential visit with 38 children very shortly. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for good weather, but we will still have a great time. Are you deciding which school you should send your child to? We think you would choose our school. We are extremely proud of what we achieve. We have been recognised by the diocese as Outstanding and by OFSTED as a Good school. We have also been recognised by the Department for Education for our excellent work in closing the gap in attainment for our vulnerable groups of children, ensuring that all our children achieve good results. If you would like to find out more about our school please come along to our open morning on Thursday 14 November from 9.30-11am, or our open afternoon on Monday 18 November from 1.45-3pm. If you are unable to make these dates, please contact the school office to book another time that is convenient to you.

CHURCH NEWS CHURCH NEWS FROM SWILLAND & ASHBOCKING Pub Church – wherever next? On a very wet morning in October, 15 of us, aged between five and 80+, were greeted in the Moon and Mushroom at Swilland with tea and coffee. It happened to be a Sunday, but it could just as easily have been another day and a different time. The pub was open for business and customers came and went while we sang, prayed, discussed, read the Bible, newspapers and poetry, and shared time with each other and with God. I don’t know what impression it made on the staff and those having a drink at the bar, but I feel certain that it was just as genuinely ‘church’ as the more traditional harvest festivals at Otley and Grundisburgh the same morning. Everyone contributed something and we all learned from each other, leaving with an enthusiastic, “let’s do it again”. Jesus promised his disciples that he would be with them to the end of time. His incarnation and life on Earth were a visible presence of God with us – Emmanuel. We can go even further and say that God is in us, present in you, me and the whole of creation as Holy Spirit. That being so, any attempt to confine God to a building, a liturgy, a day of the week or a particular group of people will fail. Jesus would not let traditions or boundaries restrict where he took the gospel – as his church, as the people of God, nor should we. This is what lies behind Fresh Expressions of Church and Lightwave. The former has been around for several years and the latter is the project led by Sally Gaze, Charlotte Cook and others that is developing from its base in Otley College. We are already involved – Pub Church, Village War Memorial Church, Messy Church, Christmas Nativity in a barn, Farmyard Harvest Celebration, country walk rogation, house church, house group – we’ve got them or done them somewhere in the benefice. A coffee-morning or a community-lunch are just as appropriate as a sung Eucharist in church to share the gospel, fellowship and God’s gift of salvation.

Seen in that way, we can be and do church anywhere at any time. Meeting with and worshipping God needs no appointment or formality. They happen daily in countless workplaces, at kitchen sinks, on mountain tops, in factory canteens, prison cells, village halls, and sitting rooms, around hospital beds. Pub Church, Fresh Expressions and Lightwave projects do not diminish, but complement the traditional Sunday service in the church building. It is Pub Church not ‘church in the pub’, and if it refreshes parts and/or people that traditional church doesn’t reach, then let’s have more of it.

WITNESHAM BAPTIST CHURCH Can I begin this month’s thoughts with a bit of ‘preachiness’? Without passing any comment on the holders of the banner on the cover of last month’s In Touch, I must comment on the banner. I would suggest that the possibility of a new dual carriageway to bypass north Ipswich would not be the Highway to Hell. That highway is already set according to each of our decisions, attitudes, actions and beliefs!

At this time of remembrance we pray for peace, let us remember that we are asked to live in peace and so, as Tom Paxton sang, ‘Let there be Peace, let it begin with me’.

I recall that the Bible (reference/guidance book for Christians) says that the broad way leads to destruction (hell) while the narrow way leads to life. The reference in Matthew 7 verses 12 to 14, refer to how people treat each other and how they respond to God and Jesus.

Morning services begin at 11am, except when stated otherwise

Living for self and not caring for or respecting others is the road to destruction/ hell and eternity without God. Trusting in Jesus and looking out for others, treating others with love and respect leads to life eternal with God. Physical roads built or threatened to be built may not be positive or helpful to many, but in the end lead to the next junction and delay. Best think about and choose a better road in life that leads to positive relationships now and for eternity! This month, again, is a time to remember our past and through remembering to try and learn so that we may not repeat errors of the past. Looking across the world to China and Hong Kong during September and October, it appears that lessons of the past have not been learnt as the violence on both sides seems to have escalated. I hope that as you read, it has not escalated beyond the time of peaceful reconciliation, but I fear that it could lead to many deaths, especially of the protestors and those wanting to hold on to any democracy. Dictatorship in all forms, or in whatever name it may have, is simply one person wanting power and control without showing any respect for others who do not agree with them. Leadership is not dominant, but being willing to be a servant wanting the best for others before themselves. Many great leaders of the past have lived in that way, most notably Jesus who gave His life for our benefit, now and eternal. We are back to the broad/wide or narrow roads.

In Touch with WTW Remembrance

chairman Harry Brightwell on 01473 210519.

Remembrance Sunday this year is on 10th November. But before that, on the 9th November there’s a performance at the Royal Albert Hall paying tribute to past and present members of the armed forces. The work of the Royal British Legion features at this performance, commonly referred to as the Poppy Day Appeal. And as you probably know, the Legion helps members of the Armed Forces community and their families every day of the week. It was formed in 192,1 and there are branches throughout the country. Our local Witnesham and District Branch meets at the Barley Mow pub 3 times a year.
