LANCERS TIME TO LEAD? Coach Willie Herrera has left an indelible mark on the program, championing the phrase “Compete with class and character.” However, wins have been few and far between. The Lancers have gone 1-9 in each of Herrera’s four seasons with just two Valley Oak League wins. East Union lost eight straight to close the 2013 season.

East Union struggled to stay healthy last season, as several key members missed considerable time with injuries. Coach Herrera says the Lancers will field an even smaller roster this fall, so the coaching staff has put an emphasis on conditioning and building strong bodies. If the Lancers are going to contend for a playoff berth – which they haven’t done since 2009 – they’ll need to stay upright.

East Union will cut its teeth against Modesto Metro Conference foes this season. The Lancers open with games against Grace Davis tonight and Johansen on Sept. 12. They go to Gregori for their final nonconference game on Sept. 19. Just for good measure, East Union completes its tour of the City of Modesto at Central Catholic on Oct. 10. The latter is a VOL game.

AUSTIN MILLER

ANGEL SENA Another dynamic sophomore who should factor considerably into the Lancers’ offensive success. Sena was the program’s freshman QB last fall, when he led the team to a 7-3 record. He’ll move to running back at the varsity level and he’ll be one of three main ball carriers. Remember, though, Sena can throw, so don’t count out the occasional half-back pass.

They don’t come much tougher than Miller, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound wide receiver. He’ll line up wide or at tight end for coach Herrera, who had this to say about the junior: “If we had bull riding in our area he’d probably be a bull rider. He’s just a tough, country kid.” The Lancers didn’t throw much last fall — receivers had just 22 catches for 304 yards in 10 games — but it may be hard to ignore a target this big.

Hector Soto (25) rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown in the Division III final against Sacramento.

QUARTERBACK Billy Marr, Ripon Christian He gets the early nod here in one of the more intriguing position battles because of one certainty: The Knights will throw the ball more than any other team in this area. If he stays upright and healthy, Marr is a shoo-in to throw for more than 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. Contenders: Nick Price, Ripon; Dakarai Charles, Manteca; Devin Nunez, Sierra

RUNNING BACKS Hector Soto, Manteca Though he was stuck behind two dynamic seniors, including record-setting running back Alex Laurel, Soto showed signs of his potential, rushing for nearly 8 yards per carry and more than 400 yards. Defenders beware, he plays with the speed and ferocity of a runaway car. Erron Duncan, Weston Ranch Last fall, Weston Ranch used Duncan as a piece in its passing game. This year, with a stronger emphasis on running the ball, the junior will get a chance to do what he does best. He nearly topped 1,000 yards receiving last fall; he’ll hit that mark on the ground this season.

DEFENSIVE BACKS Ronaldo Tijero, Manteca He has impressed defensive coordinator Rick James with his ability and athleticism, and will start right away at cornerback for a veteran-laden unit. Joseph Borba, East Union The senior might be one of the area’s smartest football players, on and off the field, but don’t sleep on his ability to step up and make a stop. He had 55 tackles last fall. Ryan Fugit, Ripon The Indians’ top playmaker is also the area’s top returning defensive back. Fugit collected four interceptions and broke up six pass plays, while playing big minutes on both sides of the ball. Tyler Lewis, Sierra Lewis broke up five passes and picked off three more. Those marks were second on the team to quarterback Devin Nunez (four INTs, seven passes defended) who should be used sparingly on defense. If given the chance, the coaches would love to see Lewis improve on his interception return yards (2).

WIDE RECEIVERS

TIGHT END

Hunter Johnson, Sierra Johnson had 12 receiving touchdowns as the third option in a pass-heavy offense last fall. If he can develop any sort of rhythm and connection with new quarterback Devin Nunez, which we believe he will, watch out. He is 6-foot-4, but plays much taller with his long arms. Clayton Buttram, Weston Ranch Though small in stature, the 5-foot-4 Buttram is earning rave reviews for his route running and strength. The senior has drawn comparisons to former Manteca wideout and current Weston Ranch coach Roman Penirian, and that’s good enough for us.

Jared Stuit, Ripon Christian Played at an All-Area level at the start of the 2013 season, but his production took a hit as RC forced the ball into graduated star Andrew Brown’s hands. Look for Stuit to be a factor, beginning to end. Contenders: Nathan Ogunbanwo, Lathrop; Austin Miller, East Union

OFFENSIVE LINE Chase McKee, Manteca McKee will start at center for the Buffaloes. He worked hard in the offseason to improve his strength, joining the 500-pound squat club

D efense

Dominic Pisano, Manteca The keeper of the Shepherd Stick, Pisano will be looked upon for his leadership skills. The safety is also quite the centerfielder, as he showed so often for the Buffaloes’ state championship baseball team. Contenders: Luis Reyes, Manteca; SeuSeu Alofaituli, Sierra; Hunter Johnson, Sierra

LINEBACKERS Angel Roblero, East Union The two-way senior cuts an imposing presence at 6 feet, 2 inches and 225 pounds. Roblero registered more than 100 tackles last fall, a testament to his motor and ballhunting abilities. Lechi Nkwocha, Manteca The senior brings sprinter speed to the outside linebacking position, which makes him a menace for opposing QBs. He finished with 11 sacks last fall; what will he do for an encore? Trevon McCray, Sierra McCray is at his absolute best on Friday nights. The

senior earned all-Valley Oak League honors

a year ago. Contenders: Chance Wells, Lathrop; L.J. Alofaituli, Sierra

DEFENSIVE LINE Will Kamps, Ripon Christian Kamps was named to MaxPreps’ California Division IV second team after amassing 20.5 sacks as a sophomore. He’ll have an expanded role on the offensive line this season, but will remain a force at defensive end. Steven Martinez, Manteca Martinez was the second most productive defensive player on the team, according to coordinator Rick James’ grade list. Hard to argue with the numbers (65 tackles, 14 for losses, three sacks), but this year he won’t be flanked by 300-pound standouts Isaac McClain and Billy Sharmoug. Joshua Fala, Sierra This time, Sierra expects to have this 6-foot-6, 325-pound man-child available for the entire season. A Brookside

over the summer. Alex Cardwell, Manteca This senior is expected to fill one of the huge holes left by the graduation of NCAA Division II athletes Joe Eavanson, Billy Sharmoug and Isaac McClain. Cardwell has the requisite build: 6-2, 281 pounds. Darrell Clemons, Manteca The 6-foot-2, 234-pound Clemons gives the Buffaloes another big body up front. Though he lacks game experience at the varsity level, the senior went up against an all-star every day in practice last year. Jake Schollenberg, Ripon Christian The returning all-Southern League selection will protect quarterback Billy Marr’s blindside this fall, filling the void left by all-conference lineman Eric Broker. Schollenberg has what football coaches call a “high motor,” which is scary for a 6-foot-2, 230-pounder. Robert Taylor, Ripon Ripon may lack returning talent at the skill positions, but it will protect quarterback Nick Price with a veteran offensive line. At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Taylor, a returning all-Trans Valley League performer, is the best of the bunch. Contenders: Tyler Driesen, Ripon Christian; Matt Kaiser, Ripon

Christian standout as a freshman, he was forced to sit out the first six games last season due to transfer rules. Fala had 14 tackles, a sack and forced fumble in limited time. Harrison Salvador, Ripon The Indians’ top returning tackler, Salvador had 53 stops last fall but only one sack. Ripon will need more from its 5-foot-10, 230-pounder as it looks to replace 21 combined sacks by 2013 studs Michael Morris and Kody Day. Contender: Dylan Tilden, East Union

UTILITY Darrion Kitson, Manteca Built like a prototypical college running back at 6-2 and 195 pounds, look for the Buffaloes to move this junior around the field to take advantage of matchups. Hawaii Leafa Teo, Lathrop Leafa Teo might be the smallest player on the Preseason All-Area Team, but he is its most versatile. He will play a prominent role in all three phases for the Spartans.

NEW PLAN OF ATTACK

Friday, Aug. 29 Lathrop at West, 7 p.m.

In his first year as Lathrop coach, Steve Wichman installed a traditional I-back offense that he operated as QB for West of Tracy. Expect a more wide-open attack this season. Junior quarterback Diego Chavez played mostly out of the shotgun during the Stagg full-contact camp over the summer and Wichman was pleased with what he saw out of his mobile signal caller and the bevy of skill athletes around him.

FAMILIAR FACES

height: 5’4” Weight: 195 lbs pos: rb/lb Hawaii Leafa Teo welcomes the burden of being a superhero for the up-and-coming Spartans, and to that point should be in on every scrum this fall. The senior isn’t the most dynamic player on the field, but he is certainly Lathrop’s best all-around player. He will have an impact in all three phases of the game as a linebacker, running back and as a member of the special teams unit.

Lathrop is the youngest team in the Valley Oak League. The Spartans have never qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason.

Coaching staff Steven Wichman, head coach/ offensive coordinator Ricky Martinez, running backs/cornerbacks/codefensive coordinator Sean Ward, wide receivers/ safeties Torijean Saffold, fullbacks/ linebackers Kevin Speer, lines/ co-defensive coordinator

Lathrop has just five total wins entering its sixth season at the varsity level. The Spartans endured back-to-back 2-8 seasons in 2010-11 and were winless in 2012. They were much improved last year in Wichman’s first as head coach but had just one victory to show for it. Three of their first four losses to start the season were by eight points or less, and two of those opponents were postseason qualifiers.

S idekicks

JAIRELL McCLAIN Last year, the diminutive McCain provided a nice change of pace in a backfield that featured the shifty Kevin Rainey and powerful Hawaii Leafa Teo. With Rainey out and Leafa Teo nursing a sore ankle, he took on a larger role in Week 7. The Spartans went on to record their lone win of the season, 35-15 over East Union. McCain had three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 45 yards.

NATHAN OGUNBANWO A defensive end a year ago, the big and athletic Ogunbanwo has a chance to make more plays with the move to outside linebacker. He has added muscle to his 6-foot-4 frame and could be even more of a threat in the passing game as a large target for junior QB Diego Chavez.

5

New coaches have joined the staff, but they are familiar to both Wichman and the area. His father, Rob, has taken over the sophomore squad, while former Jr. Spartans varsity head coach Oscar Guerra now heads the freshmen. On-campus teacher and baseball coach Randy Baltazar returns to the football staff as an assistant. Former Weston Ranch star Torijean Saffold is on board to coach the linebackers.

CHANCE WELLS Wells is a thickbodied bruiser of a fullback who is tough for a single defender to bring down. He even showed a nice burst of speed on a 33-yard run against Sonora last season. Lathrop has plenty of depth in the offensive backfield, and its strength defensively is at linebacker. Defensively, Wells is a key member of Lathrop’s hard-hitting linebacking corps. “Our backer crew is very solid,” Wichman said. “They had a very nice camp.”

Friday, Aug. 29 Sierra at Ripon, 7 p.m.

Ripon has put together the most impressive nonleague schedule in the area. Ahead are four possible conference champions in Sierra, Patterson, Sonora and North Section power Sutter. “It seems like every year we’re bringing up two or three sophomores,” coach Chris Johnson said. This year, sophomore soccer standout Thomas Sidtikun is handling kicking duties for the varsity squad. Otherwise, the coaching staff has decided to keep the 8-0 freshman team intact for another year while a talented junior class also coming off an undefeated season moves up. Two-way starters Johnson expects to make an immediate impact are: RB/DB Andrew Baciocco, RB/DB Jacob Duxbury and RB/LB Caleb McCusker.

RIVALY BOWL ON HOLD?

height: 5’10” Weight: 190 lbs pos: qb No one has better command of their team’s playbook than junior quarterback Nick Price, the Indians’ returning starter. Price has the ability to change the course of a game with his instincts – he’s always a threat to run – and acumen under center. In his first year at the varsity level, Price threw for 1,612 yards with 20 TDs against four interceptions, and helped the Indians win two Sac-Joaquin Section playoff games.

8

Ripon competes in the Trans-Valley League. The Indians last won the TVL in 2012 and have reached the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs in three consecutive seasons.

RYAN FUGIT Michael Ysit had his shining moments two years ago but was mostly buried in the backfield depth chart. That was before breaking out in a big way during his senior season (1,918 total yards, 27 TDs). Johnson envisions a similar breakthrough for Fugit, who “would have had more touches last year if not for Ysit.” A home run threat out of the backfield and as a receiver, Fugit also plays cornerback and led the defense with four picks.

For the first time since 2005, Ripon Christian is not on the schedule. The Ripon Rivalry Bowl was completely dominated by the Indians, who are 8-0 while outscoring their neighbors, 37777. “We had to do what was best for our program, but it was a mutual decision,” Johnson said.

S idekicks HARRISON SALVADOR, ROBERT TAYLOR Chris Johnson believes this year’s squad is anchored by the best group of linemen in his 10-plus years as Ripon’s head coach. Although they lack prototypical size, it is not a requirement in the team’s hybrid spread/wing-T offense. Tackles Taylor (6-2, 215) and Salvador (5-10, 230) are perfect examples. The rugged Taylor earned all-TVL and All-Area honors as an offensive lineman last year, and Salvador earned honorable mention while leading the defensive linemen with 53 tackles. Rejoining these two-way standouts is Matt Kaiser (6-1, 250) at center. Lionel Reyes is a junior who could have a substantial role on both sides of scrimmage. It’s a battle-tested group that should put junior Nick Price at ease as he develops into one of the area’s top signal callers.

He has the ability to light up a scoreboard with each flick of his golden right arm. Unlike most, he thrives when the heat is on.

With a rocket right arm, tall frame and veteran receiving corps, Billy Marr (1,783 yards, 18 TDs) is poised for a breakout season. The 6-foot-3 senior spent the summer traveling the West Coast competing in 7-on-7 passing tournaments and taking part in six college camps. The Knights will miss RB Andrew Brown’s record-breaking production, but Marr’s return means RC’s offense will remain hot to touch.

School: Ripon Christian Alias: The Human Torch Class: Senior

Ripon Christian competes in the Southern League. The Knights reached the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI championship for the first time in school history in 2013.

WILL KAMPS After a breakout sophomore season that saw him record 20.5 sacks, Kamps begins his junior season on many scouting service’s must-watch list. He’s gained 20 pounds and cut his 40-yard dash time, which could spell doom for QBs. ... Kamps also led the Knights in tackles for a loss. ... This fall, he’ll also be asked to anchor an offensive line that graduated David Henderson and Eric Broker, now playing at Dordt College in Iowa.

S idekicks JARED STUIT The Knights’ second-leading receiver behind graduated star Andrew Brown, Stuit will be a nightmare for defensive coordinators in the Southern League. He stands 6 feet, 2 inches and plays much stronger than 185 pounds – his listed weight. He had 21 catches for 327 yards and three touchdowns, but did most of his damage early in the season.

2

REPLACING BROWN Last fall, doeverything star Andrew Brown grabbed the attention of California high school football enthusiasts and never let go. He closed his career as the SacJoaquin Section’s career touchdown leader with 126 and ranks No. 4 on the state’s all-time list. His 5,909 career rushing yards are believed to be the most in South San Joaquin County history. The question now becomes: How do you replace all those points? And with whom?

ETHAN McMURRAY Quarterback Billy Marr is nothing without players to target down field. Coach Trey Ozenbaugh believes McMurray is due for a productive junior season. The wide receiver added two inches and 15 pounds to his frame, making him a strong candidate for a jump ball. He had 13 catches for 192 yards and three touchdowns in 2013. Look for those number to balloon this fall.

Super Power Has the ability to elude tacklers with his blazing speed (4.49 in the 40yard dash) and agility. Just when you think you have him bottled up – WHOOSH! – he’s gone. School: Weston Ranch Alias: Flash Class: Junior

“We have to win football games. That’s where success is measured. We have to go out and beat some people,” coach Davis said. “I’ve adjusted our preseason schedule, because our league is unbelievable. We have to win games and we have to be competitive. We can’t be out there getting rolled over.”

strength special ability stamina

height: 5’9” Weight: 180 lbs pos: rb/s/kr With the Cougars rededicating themselves to the run game, Erron Duncan is set for a breakout season. He is shifty and quick on his feet, but he’s also adept mentally. Duncan is a 4.0 student with plans to attend a Division I university with or without an athletic scholarship. On the field, though, he’s a touchdown waiting to happen. He had 45 catches for 890 yards, nearly 200 yards rushing, 13 total TDs and 90 tackles on defense.

Weston Ranch competes in the Valley Oak League. The Cougars haven’t qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs since 2005.

CLAYTON BUTTRAM The senior slot receiver weighs in at only 115 pounds, easily the smallest impact player on Weston Ranch’s roster. But pound for pound, coach Seth Davis says Buttram is the Cougars’ strongest player. His knowledge of the offense combined with his shiftiness and hands have many drawing comparisons to another mighty mite, coach Roman Penerian, a former standout at Manteca, Modesto Junior College and the University of Mary.

The Cougars would have been loaded for bear on offense this fall had their stars stuck around following Davis’ first year at the helm. Quarterback Marcus Moore, wide receiver Chris Cannaday and running back John McDonald transferred to other Stockton schools. Each would have been in the running for an All-Area selection this fall.

S idekicks MARK CARGENELLA, KEVIN ARROYO No two Weston Ranch players transformed their bodies in the weight room more than Cargenella and Arroyo, a pair of senior guards and linebackers. The two tipped the scales at only 185 pounds last fall, but have added more than 30 pounds to their frames with their work in the weight room. While their weight has ballooned, so too has their confidence and ease in the varsity spotlight. Coach Davis said the two best friends were shell-shocked at times last fall, but that’s no longer the case. Cargenella and Arroyo have set the tone in the offseason. Strength and conditioning coach Matt O’Donnell introduced the 1,200Pound Club earlier this year and Cargenella and Arroyo are projected to be its first two members. The 1,200-Pound Club measures a player’s dead lift, power clean, squat and bench press.
