It’s a unique kind of fraternity – the Faros car club out of Modesto – that was immortalized in the movie American Graffiti. And though the movie gave the club some fame and was based on the local Faros club in Modesto, the name of the club in the movie was changed to the Pharaohs. The ‘bad boys’ depiction in the movie, some club members admit, was pretty close to the truth, while others say they didn’t deserve that reputation. In 1957, Modesto High School students John Husband, Chuck Billington and a few others discussed the idea of a car club, creating the name Faros, the FRS crest and membership cards. Lasting about two weeks, the Dean of Boys at the school heard about this plan and nullified it with the warning that if they continued they would be expelled. Three years later in August 1960 seven guys collaborated on Edgebrook Drive in Modesto to make the original idea of the Faros a reality. They had weekly meetings with about 20 to 25 guys in attendance in the early days. To be-
come a Faro, members had to vote you in and they had to go through an initiation that varied over the years. “In 1961 we had “FAROS MODESTO” car plaques made and that started our transition from a Fraternity to a Car Club,” explained club member Darrell Bailey. “Most of us had cars and we didn’t do anything different but the plaques gave us a lot of notoriety.” “Cruising was a fun evening activity enjoyed by many when gasoline was less than 50 cents a gallon,” added Daryl Weitl. “We were just a bunch of teenagers who hung out together and did typical teen things.” Adolf Mauksch was an active member in 1962 and then went off to serve in the military in 1965. He drove a ’61 Impala back in the ‘60s and currently has a 1940 Chevy street rod. Mauksch shared that Gary Second, who passed a few months ago, was a classmate and good friend to George Lucas at Downey High. “In fact when George was in Modesto to be Grand Marshal of our Graffiti Parade, he came down from the podium
when he saw Gary in the crowd and gave him a big hug,” said Mauksch. “That was a very big moment for Gary and it made the rest of the Faros proud and, I think, a little in awe of Gary.” “Gary is probably the reason that George Lucas put the Faros in the movie, even though he changed the spelling,” said Bailey. “He was a special guy and we will dearly miss him.” Bailey was the president from 1961 to 1962 and recalls dragging and racing similar to what is depicted in the movie as well as downtown Modesto being the social center of the valley for teenagers in the ‘60s. The group would help people in the community whether it was to assist someone that was out of gas, stranded, or had a dead battery and they would hand out a card that stated, “You have been assisted by a member of the Faros Car Club.” They would also collect food for charity. At a 50-year reunion a few of the club members reunited and talked about reviving the club. They met up a few months later in Tahoe for a weekend and decidfaros, page 10

PRESENTS Car Show On The River BY VIRGINIA STILL
The Fourth Annual Car Show on the River at the Old Fishermen’s Club continues this year on Saturday, July 14 after a couple year hiatus due to flooding. The club is at 10800 Maze Boulevard, Modesto. The car show is open to cars, trucks, boats, and motorcycles and runs from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. There will be food, a raffle, awards and performing for guests will be the Silvermoon band. Event organizer Don Harmon has been organizing car shows for over 10 years. He was asked by the Old Fishermen’s Club (OFC) board to assist in their shows. The first car show held at the club was in 2013. In 2017 the club
experienced a flood where four feet of water engulfed the clubhouse. “We lost all of our mature oak trees, had to replace our kitchen ranges, etcetera,” added Harmon. “The rebuilding started as soon as the flood water was gone from the clubhouse.” The task of overseeing a car show came easy for Harmon especially for the love of cars that he had. He owned a 1941 Chevrolet coupe, a custom 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop, a 1955 Plymouth Belvedere, which saw fame being captured in a national magazine, a 1950 Oldsmobile 88 sport coupe and many more. “As soon my daughter, the youngest of four

children, graduated from Fresno State I was able to fulfill my car interests,” said Harmon. “I have cruised Modesto streets at times. I grew up in Merced so we would get bored and drive to Modesto to cruise in the ‘50s. I think the Modesto Graffiti cruise is awesome, it brings back the days. Listen to music, meet girls and show off.” The Old Fishermen’s Club will host the car show once again and guests are invited to stop by and make some memories, continuing graffiti summer in July. “I have been involved in the Modesto cruise and have put on many car shows in the last 15 years and am still at it,” expressed Harmon.

Classic Car Parade To Hit McHenry By DENNIS D. CRUZ
McHenry Avenue in Modesto will be packed with classic cars, car lovers and families for the 20th annual Kiwanis Classic Car Parade on Friday, June 8. The North Modesto Kiwanis Club is hosting the event as part of Graffiti Month festivities. Brent Burnside of the Kiwanis is excited for another year of tradition. “It is a time for everyone to reflect on car culture. To turn back the hands of time and enjoy the nostalgia and celebrate summer,” event chairman Burnside said. The event is scheduled Friday, June 8 in downtown Modesto with the parade route beginning
by the historic ‘graffiti’ statue at Five Points. They begin staging the cars in the early morning with the parade scheduled for 6:30 p.m. It takes nearly 300 volunteers to help run the event and organizers expect roughly 1,000 cars to be registered. “It takes a lot of hard work, from a lot of dedicated people to help run this event. We appreciate each and every one of them and the event can not happen without them,” Burnside said. Cars from 1979 and older are expected to make the cruise along the annual event parade route. It starts at the statue, goes down McHenry to Orangeburg Avenue
and the returns back to downtown. Cars from 18 different states are currently registered and even a car from Australia is coming to be a part of the event, highlighting the worldwide love affair with classic autos. In 1998 the parade route went from 10th Street to I Street in Downtown Modesto and four years ago it was re-routed to its current McHenry Avenue location. “We moved it to McHenry because that is an iconic cruising street in Modesto, it is American Graffiti,” said Burnside. This year the Grand Marshal will be Don Wood.

they were the lead in the parade and have been every year since. The Faros Car Club was inducted into the Cruising Walk of Fame in June 2016. They were given a framed certificate and a plaque with their name that was placed in the sidewalk on 10th Street between J and K streets in Modesto, which was very close to where the guys hung out back in their prime.
“The inclusion into the Cruising Walk of Fame was a definite highlight to Faros membership,” explained member Joe Wylie. “There were many ‘car clubs’ in the 1950 to 1980 time period and the Faros were the recipient of just plain “good luck” that George Lucas picked them for his famous movie. The presentation ceremony was amazing and I will never forget it.”

Modesto Symphony Orchestra Goes Graffiti By TERESA HAMMOND
While it might not seem a natural fit, Caroline Nickel, President and CEO of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, is excited for the community to experience Beethoven Meets Graffiti on June 1 and 2. The first time collaboration performance will be hosted at Gallo Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. each day. Admission is $19 for adults and $12 for students. “The symphony likes to collaborate with local organizations and this is the 10th anniversary of our Music Director David Lockington,” Nickel said. To mark his anniversary with MSO, Lockington wanted to do something which reflected the Modesto community. The June 1 and 2 performance will begin with Beethoven’s Symphony No.8, while the second half will be fresh, new, collaborative music. Original pieces, by three area composers will be played for the audience and then performed again with dance interpretation to the music, offered by dancers of Central West Ballet. Nickel shared that composers John Hildebrandt, Dale Trumbore and Ale-

The State Theatre Offers Graffiti-Themed Events BY KIM VAN METER
Lace up your saddle shoes, grab your popcorn and head on over to the historic State Theatre in Modesto for a special showing of American Graffiti on Saturday, June 2 in celebration of Graffiti Summer. Graffiti Summer, a month-long extravaganza aimed at honoring Modesto’s most celebrated native son, filmmaker George Lucas, returns good, old-fashioned fun to town with root beer floats, cruising, and of course, plenty of oldies-but-goodies playing on the jukebox. According to The State Theatre Executive Director Sue Richardson, The State has been participating in Graffiti Summer for the past 12 years and it’s be-

For a quarter century The Fruit Yard has hosted the longest running event in honor of graffiti summer. The Annual Back to Graffiti At The Fruit Yard is put together by both Joe Traina, owner of The Fruit Yard, and the Modesto F-100 Elite Pickup Club. This year’s dates are Saturday and Sun-
come a tradition they happily continue. “Well before there was a Graffiti Summer, The State was the theater George Lucas grew up in, and the one his family members still visit for films,” Richardson shared. “The theater, which opened in 1934, bore witness to so many of Modesto’s cultural events and changes, including the years of drag racing down J Street and McHenry Avenue; we showed the popular films of the day; we staged concerts where the community enjoyed rock ‘n roll, and we’ve been part of every cultural renaissance ever since.” Released in 1973, American Graffiti launched the careers of several A-list actors and became an in-
stant classic by striking a chord with viewers as they went on a nostalgic 24hour journey set in 1962 Modesto. “The film is iconic and the one always associated by Modestans with Lucas. There’s a car club here — the FAROS — and the members always attend the screening of American Graffiti because they lived it. They’re now in their 60s and 70s, but the ‘50s were their heyday and they just can’t get enough of the film … and our root beer floats. They were the original cruisers!” Richardson said. This crowd-pleaser features a veritable who’s who in famous stars from Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford, just to mention a few big names. “Our goal is always to
make our patrons feel welcome, and to get a sense of stepping into another time, which they really are since we provide an experience no other theater in our area can,” Richardson said. embraces the American Graffiti Festival every June by hosting its four car shows beginning this year on Sunday, June 3 with the 13th Annual Graffiti Classic Car Show followed on Monday, June 4 to be hosted at American Chevrolet. The Monday event will see over 200 cars, according to veteran club member Jack Flower. It’s open to whomever drives in,

On Tuesday night, June 5 the Mid-Valley Club will host some 450 cars in the mall parking lot with an array of different booths set up in the mall for the Graffiti event. Scheduled for Friday, June 8 is the Kiwanis Classic Car Parade with the vehicles first staging near J Street and 17th Street by the George Lucas Memorial Park setting up two abreast from
J Street to McHenry Avenue with about 1200 cars expected to turn out for the parade. The Mid-Valley Chevy Club members feel that once the public has viewed the many activities, car shows, tours and events and they own a classic vehicle, they will want to consider joining the club – it is not required to own a Chevy to join the club.

2018 Graffiti Classic Show Rolls Into Town By MARG JACKSON
One of the biggest car shows in the Central Valley, and a focal point of Graffiti Summer, the annual Graffiti Classic hosted by Modesto Area Street Rod Association roars in to Modesto on Sunday, June 3. Hosted at McHenry Village, the show features up to 500 classic and late model cars and trucks and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no charge for spectators to come and view the classics. There are even some newer models, as the event is open to all years. If still available, registration for cars entering the day of the event is $30. There will be early registration packet pick up on
Saturday, June 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the back parking lot of McHenry Village for those who preregistered for the event. Music and DJ services for the show will be provided by Gene Adams, who hosts literally dozens of events throughout the year, spinning rock and roll tunes, keeping event visitors up to date on the schedule and more. The Graffiti Classic features over $500 in cash prizes for participants and over 60 awards are waiting to be handed out. Among the honors will be Police Chief, Fire Department, Modesto Mayor, Sheriff’s Award and Event Sponsor Awards. There will also be prize drawings and raffles
throughout the day, open to all. Car registration opens at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday to get everyone in place for the big event. Spectators are welcome and there will be Graffiti Classic merchandise on sale, food and drink, music and more. Modesto Area Street Rod Association has been putting on the show for years; this is the 13th annual event hosted in conjunction with the Graffiti Summer. Frankie Avalon: A Star For The Ages BY VIRGINIA STILL
Bringing the Beach Party to Modesto just in time for a hot Graffiti Summer, Frankie Avalon will be performing at the Gallo Center for the Arts on Sunday, June 10 at 3 p.m. With an extensive career spanning three generations of music, television and movies, Avalon continues to entertain fans. At a young age Avalon began playing the trumpet which led him to playing with the city orchestra in Philadelphia. After reading the paper about Jimmy Darren, who was from his neighborhood, having a successful career he knew that he could make something happen for himself. In the 1950s Avalon began his film career and starred in several ‘Beach Party’ movies with An-
nette Funicello including Bikini Beach, Pajama Party, and Fireball 500. “Annette Funicello and I, we just hit it off,” stated Avalon about one of his favorite co-stars. “It was a great combination and we had lots of fun together and lots of success together. I have done a lot of movies but I would probably have to say the one character that I did play, it was a stage play called Pal Joey, and that was quite an experience for me. I really enjoyed that character.” He has a new film coming out in June called Papa that will have a limited release with co-stars Daryl Hannah, Ann-Margret, Paul Sorvino, Eric Roberts, and Mischa Barton to name a few. With acting and singing running into each other

Making some close friendships with the cast of Grease while rehearsing his song “Beauty School Drop Out” he knew that the movie was going to be something special. “It just amazes me that it has been 40 years now and people still know it,” said Avalon. “They do these kinds of things with Grease all over the country.” Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 was a great thrill for him and knowing that music has changed over the years, he feels it has to

Graffiti Summer – What’s Not To Love? Whether or not you have ever seen the movie American Graffiti, heard about or maybe even did a little ‘cruising’ along McHenry Avenue yourself or ever broke out in song when a selection from ‘Grease’ comes on the radio, there’s just something about Graffiti Summer that speaks to everyone. From root beer floats to baseball, car cruises to movie showings, parades and music, the iconic ‘graffiti’ mentality is alive and well. There are festivities throughout the month and most are family-
friendly, appropriate for all ages. It’s a great way to welcome in the summer season and pay homage to Modesto’s history. On Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer, A&W Root Beer at 1404 G St., Modesto, will have car shows, hula hoop contests, karaoke and, welcoming back the old days, car hops on roller skates will be serve up root beer floats. Also throughout the summer, the Velvet Creamery at 2204 McHenry Ave., will feature car shows every Wednesday night, with raffles and fun activities.
Special programs at Modesto Symphony Orchestra, The State Theatre and Gallo Center for the Arts are scheduled throughout the month as well going along with the graffiti theme. A special ceremony, set for Wednesday, June 6, is this year’s induction of local celebrities into the historical Graffiti Walk of Fame. The event at the 10th Street Plaza in downtown Modesto starts at 6:30 p.m. and along with the ceremony, live music will be provided by the Third Party Band to add to the festive evening.
The Central Valley summer sun helps classic cars shine brightly; owners who carefully prep their prized possessions for display make sure even the headlights and everything under the hood is in pristine condition.
Admirers take their time to stroll along the avenues of cars, a familiar summer sight all around the Central Valley, with a plethora of car shows for classic car owners and lovers alike. A ‘Downtown Cruise In’ is planned on June 8, following the Kiwanis Club Classic Car Parade, with music honoring Buddy Holly and with several live bands ready to perform at 1010 10th St., from 9 p.m. to 111 p.m. As far as baseball goes, the Modesto Nuts get in on the action for Graffiti Summer by hosting a special Graffiti Night on Saturday, June 16. The evening will feature classic cars, root beer floats, rock ‘n roll music from the ‘50s and ‘60s and a game against the rival Stockton Ports. Topping off the night will be a fireworks show.
The fun is at John Thurman Field, 601 Neece Drive in Modesto and the game starts at 7:05 p.m. A car and bike show will be staged in conjunction with the Saturday, June 23 Modesto Blues Festival, at McHenry Event Center, 945 McHenry Ave. The music runs from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. with outside and inside stages; admission is $5 and must be 21 and over. Rounding out the month’s festivities, on Sunday, June 24, will be the 11th annual Rod and Custom Car Show, hosted at the Elks Lodge, 645 Charity Way, Modesto, benefitting the charitable works of the
Modesto Elks. No admission for spectators, the show opens at 9 a.m. and awards are presented at 3 p.m. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and there will be classic cars and custom hot rods on display, with music to enjoy as well as food and beverages available to purchase. Silver Anniversary Show For Escalon Lions Club By MARG JACKSON

event nearly every Friday night during the summer but have scaled that back for this year. The Friday night summer sessions are set for June 15 and July 20, running from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There is no entry fee for the pre-cruise gatherings; those interested can just bring their classic cars to the Main Street Park for an evening of music, shop talk and looking over the classics. Taking over as chairperson this year for the Autumn Cruise is Escalon Lions Club member Mike Powers; he can be reached at 209-838-6889 for more information about the preevent Friday night shows or the actual Autumn Cruise in September. The main show in September, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., typically brings around 300 cars, trucks, motorcycles – and even the occasional boat – to Escalon for the day and also includes DJ Gene
Plenty of trophies are presented each year at the annual Escalon Lions Club Autumn Cruise, with participants eager to take one home.
Friday evenings, June 15 and July 20, will see ‘pre-cruise’ events at the Main Street Park in Escalon, gearing up for the Escalon Lions Club annual Autumn Cruise, on the schedule for Sept. 8. Adams, a breakfast and lunch, music throughout the day, raffle drawings, Best of Show and multiple sponsor and specialty awards and a variety of merchandise vendors. Organizers said they anticipate good participation in the Friday night gatherings and are also looking forward to another successful September show, which helps raise funds for scholarships for graduating Escalon High School seniors. Last year, the club was able to give out 15 scholarships to students, worth $1,500 apiece.
There’s a lot of time to talk shop and swap stories about car restoration projects and favorite makes and models during the Autumn Cruise in Escalon.
Along with classic cars and trucks, music, food, vendors and more, the Escalon Lions Club annual Autumn Cruise also serves up plenty of opportunities to walk away with prizes from a huge raffle.
