PUTTING IT ON THE LINE EU eyes postseason with improved line, overall experience B y JO N AMAR JACINTO T h e Bu lletin
It’s now or never for East Union’s battlehardened seniors. Two years ago, head coach Willie Herrera brought up seven sophomores to join three others already on the varsity to fill starting spots that opened up because of injuries. The Lancers wound up 3-7 but banked on that experience to pay off the following year. A 3-0 start capped by a noteworthy win over Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff qualifier Gregori caught the attention of their Valley Oak League opponents to come. East Union finished 3-7 yet again. The Lancers want nothing more than to end their streak of five losing seasons and return to the postseason for the first time since 2010. “There couldn’t be any more urgency than I have now,” said quarterback Jack Weaver, one of eight third-year starters. “I’ve tried to make a mark these last two years and I want to make this year memorable. I want to make sure I leave it all on the field. “I want to prove to this town and to the league what we are. I don’t want us to leave any doubts in anyone’s minds.” Herrera has a great deal of faith in his quarterback to lead the shotgun wing offense, but if East Union wants to be competitive in the Valley Oak League it will need improved line play and defense. “I want us to have an edge and I believe this team truly has that,” Herrera said. “They have to want to be physical. The blueprint to be successful in this league is that you have to have good o-line and a good d-line, and you have to have depth there as well.” Martin Garcia, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound left tackle, and center Andy Parcells (6-3, 225) are third-year starters. Joining them are juniors Nick Sims at right guard, Jaysen Reindel at right tackle and defensive standout Joseph Reynaga at left guard. The 6-2, 245-pound Reindel is better known for his accomplishments in the winter during the wrestling season. “Reindel brings some grit,” Herrera said. “All of our linemen are wrestlers; he’s just the most decorated. Those guys are tough-nosed and they understand the one-on-one individual battles in the trenches.” On the other side of scrimmage, Reynaga — an All-VOL first-team selection as a sophomore — stars at inside linebacker in the 3-4 front. Pete Roblero, Ceasar Vaca, Andrew Elias and 6-2, 290-pound senior Stephan Demello will be rotate with Garcia, Parcells and Reindel. “If you can shut down the run game in league you have a really good chance to be successful,” Herrera said. “It’s nice to finally have some beef up there.” The defense gave up an average of 33.6 points last season. Free safety Angel Sena, another third-year player, believes that the experienced secondary can limit the big plays Fellow safety Isaiah Cormier is also in his third varsity season. “We’re a lot tougher,” Sena said. “Everyone pursues to the ball and everyone hits. “My sophomore year it was a little scary at first,” he added. “Now everything comes a lot slower now. There’s no intimidation at all. We’re ready for any challenge.” Weaver lost his top two targets to graduation in 6-2 receiver Austin Miller (42 catches, 788 yards, eight touchdowns) and 6-3, 215-pound tight end Baily Simons (18-504-8), but he has more weapons this year. Isaiah Sholund, a 5-7, 210-pound running back Herrera describes as a “bowling ball,” has separated himself in an otherwise crowded backfield that includes Sena. Matthew Pilkay — the sophomore team’s QB last season — blossomed at wide receiver over the summer, and much is expected from senior Jake Harries after injuries stunted his junior season. “Each guy has their own strength,” Herrera said. “I have all the confidence in our starters and even our guys backing them up — there is not a whole lot of drop-off athletically. We have some size mixed in there, too. “As a defense you pick out who the best player is and you want to try and neutralize that guy. With what we have, it’s going to be hard to single out somebody, and if they do that one of our other guys will step up.” The pieces are in place for Weaver and the Lancers to have a big season, and with a sophomore class that celebrated undefeated 2015 campaign the future also looks promising. But for Weaver, the future is now. “We want to be that class that got us back to the playoffs,” Weaver said. “We want to leave that legacy.”

SMASH & DASH New-look offense a ‘multi-faceted animal’ for Buffs B y JO NAMAR JACINTO Th e Bu lletin
These aren’t your older brothers’ Buffaloes. A program that has long prided itself in smash-mouth football starring hulking linemen and punishing ball carriers, Manteca’s attack will unveil a new look with secondyear junior quarterback Gino Campiotti spearheading the herd. “We’re a multi-faceted animal this year,” 15th-year Manteca head coach Eric Reis said. “With the quarterback and receivers we have — it’s different. We have some explosive guys.” Manteca is just three seasons removed from winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III title and making its first appearance in a CIF Northern California Regional Bowl Game. The Buffs have aspirations to make it back with an experienced core of players joined by a talented junior class that went 9-1 at the sophomore level last year — and that was without five of its top players. Campiotti was one of four sophomores elevated to the varsity, while running back Michael Frisby missed the entire season with an ACL injury. “Starting varsity early makes this year a lot easier,” Manteca’s 6-foot-3 signal caller said. “In a sense I feel like a senior with that year under my belt and I’m much more mature than I was last year. I had a real good offseason program. I went to about four or five camps, I always in the gym or working on footwork on my own. I have big goals for this year. I want this team to win a championship more than anything.” Campiotti (53.1 completion percentage, 912 yards, 15 touchdowns) split snaps with then-senior Dakarai Charles for much of his sophomore campaign before taking over as the full-time starter late. Two-way standout Ronaldo Tijero (708 receiving yards, seven TDs) has graduated, but returner Jose Garcia (393 yards, five TDs) is primed for a breakout season after an impressive summer. Complementing the 6-foot Garcia is 5-7 speedster Joel Olmos, a transfer from San Jose. “(Garcia) never left the gym all offseason,” Campiotti said. “He’s really strong, really fast and really good. We played travel 7-on-7 together this summer, and I’ve been throwing to him pretty much since the end of last season. “I have great receivers. I’m excited with Jose and Joel, and we also have an amazing line.” Fellow second-year juniors Kyle Reis (6-2, 260) and Justin Kakala (6-4, 270) anchor the left side of the line at tackle and guard, respectively. Tyler Welch (5-8, 170) and William Maddox (5-11, 245) are back at center and right guard, while junior Mateo Fernandez (6-1, 240) is at the other tackle spot. With that kind of size, Manteca hasn’t fully committed to a pass-happy attack. “We are still who we are,” Reis said. “We like running the ball and we have some guys who can do that.” Kameron Beamon (572 yards, 5.8 per carry, five touchdowns) could get the most touches, but Reis said James Thomas and Ferrin Manuleleua will also get theirs to grind out the tough yards. “It’s Mixture of different dudes, but Kameron is good. They’re all good, but he has something a little special in him so we’re excited to see what he can do with the ball.” Speaking of Thomas and Manuleleua, the fourth second-year junior, they lead a talented group of linebackers that include seniors Devyn Gonzales and Andrew Thomas on the outside. James Thomas (no relation to Andrew) had a breakout junior year in which he led the team with 11 tackles for losses. Manuleleua had a team-high 62 tackles and earned a spot on the All-VOL first team. “We have a great front seven this year,” James Thomas said. “We just like to hit. We’re ready to smack.” Noe Salivar (6-0, 284), the lone sophomore this season, starts in the middle of Manteca’s space-eating defensive line with Kyle Reis and Kakala flanking him. The secondary is relatively inexperienced with cornerbacks Damon Lynch and Tijero

Quarterbacks aren’t typically two-way players, but the Buffaloes have another talented junior in Kyle Rachels to fill either or both roles if needed. “He definitely pushes me, he’s really good,” Campiotti said of Rachels. “He’s going to make me better and I’ll try to make him better. If anything were to happen to one of us we can fill the spot.”

STATE CHAMPS START OVER Third-year starters look to lead inexperienced Timberwolves
Hime Romero/The Bulletin
Sierra High’s offense runs drills during the defending CIF State Championship football team Sierra High’s practice as they prepare for the upcoming season.

By J O NAMAR JACINTO T h e Bu lletin
Seuseu Alofaituli, Marcos Castillo and Nashon Tamiano already have much to celebrate going into their third and final season on Sierra’s varsity football team. As sophomores, they were key members on a talented defense that anchored the Timberwolves’ run to a Valley Oak League championship. Then as juniors, they helped Sierra capture its first Sac-Joaquin Section banner for football in what was a dominant run through the Division IV bracket. The ride didn’t end there, as the T’wolves went on win the Northern California at CIF State Division IV-A Bowl Games. So what is there left for the trio to accomplish? Castillo said the team remains motivated, but there is no talk of repeating its historic campaign. “You can’t look too far ahead and at the same time you can’t live in the past,” Castillo said. “New guys have come in and we have to keep them focused. Yeah, we want to go back to state, but we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves.” There is much work ahead for what is a mostly-untested group of Timberwolves, who have just three returning starters on offense and five on defense. The good news is that the few returners bring a wealth of experience from a 15-week season. Senior quarterback Mark Vicente has a better grasp of the spread offense to go with heightened confidence after spearheading a late drive that put Sierra ahead for good late in its state title game at Chowchilla. Last year was his first behind center, and he improved as the season went on and completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,519 yards and 20 touchdowns to go with 10 scores rushing. “I have a lot of experience behind me now,” Vicente now. It’s a lot easier for me to read the coverages, read the defense and make the right decisions. The key for me now is to stay calm in the pocket, not get flustered and take the hit for the team if I have to.” Sierra graduated its top receiver and rusher in Daniel Wyatt and Mark Paule Jr., respectively. The versatile Castillo takes over as the featured back, and Jesse Babauta is the lone holdover from Sierra’s four-receiver set. Seniors Brandon Arreola (RB), Carlos Perez (WR) and Eriq Kurys (WR) are others expected to fill key roles. Sierra lacks even more experience in the

trenches, where Tamiano is the lone returner. Sierra coach Jeff Harbison likes what he sees out of senior Fernando Vega and junior Jordan Black, and he’s hoping sophomore Isaiah Lee can solidify his spot at center. While it’s a scrappy bunch, the offensive line no longer has the imposing presence of 6-foot-6, 335-pound tackle Josh Fala who is now at Delaware State. “Our line is undersized, but we have high hopes for them,” Harbison said, “It’s just hard to assess them at this point because of the limited contact.” The defensive line will have to replace emotional leader Enrique Jasso and MaxPreps All-State Small Schools selection Andrew Guevara (19.5 sacks), but linebackers Alofaituli and Tamiano are still around to anchor the 4-2 front. Caden Worth was a late-season call-up from the sophomore squad last season who played significant minutes and now starts at free safety. Castillo is back at strong safety and placekicker. “We have some players who played a lot last year, and it’s up to us to lead the rest Hime Romero/The Bulletin of the team,” Castillo said. “One thing we do have is chemistry from getting to play so Sierra High running back Brandon Arreola runs offensive plays during practice. much last year.”

The 2015 season was one of firsts for Lathrop High – the first season with more than three wins, the first winning season and an inaugural appearance in the playoffs. In fact, the six wins in the 6-5 campaign was one less win then in all of the six-year history of the program. According to second-year coach Joe Pirillo, it was the team buying into a new system last season that helped turn things around. “The kids bought into something last year,” Pirillo said. “They worked hard and wanted success.” The summer turnout swelled to triple digits. “We were up to 110 this year in the program from 90 last year,” Pirillo said. “We continued to work hard in our seven-onseven games. We are building on last year and coming together.” The Spartans boast 10 senior starters on defense but just five returning starters on offense. Stepping in to call signals for
Lathrop will be junior Keonnee Linnell (5 foot, 10 inches, 153 pounds). “Keonnee is progressing really well,” Pirillo said. “He is learning on the fly and we have tweaked the offense for him.” Linnell will have some beef in front of him, including Placido Esparza (5-11, 235), Luis Rivas (6-2, 230) and Mario Ragosa (6-0, 230) with Idowu Olaleye (6-2, 200) at tight end. Returners R.J. Tisdell (5-8, 170) and Tremayne Willis Jr. (5-10, 170) will be lining up behind Linnell in the Multiple I offense. Lathop is stepping up its non-league schedule. West of Tracy – which handed the Spartans a stinging last-second loss in 2015 – remains. But gone are wins from last year in Liberty Ranch and Ripon. Stepping in are small-school powerhouse Hilmar and perennial Division I power Franklin of Elk Grove. “The kids are going to play some talented guys,” Pirillo said. “Not cupcakes. “It makes no sense to try and pad your stats. Strength of schedule makes a difference when it comes to making it into the playoffs.”

HIGHER LEARNING With size, athleticism and scholars, Cougars ready to shine

T h e Bu lletin
Before the 2015 campaign, Weston Ranch had endured seven consecutive losing seasons, averaging fewer than four wins per year. In 2015 the Cougars racked up three wins to start the year and finished at an even 5-5 for the best season in nearly a decade, but missed the playoffs by a game. Flush with numbers, size and a changing culture, Weston Ranch looks to turn the corner this year. “Over the summer we have had a consistent number of 100-plus players in our program,” Cougars coach Seth Davis said. “The growth of the program from the success in the class room is why we are gaining success on the field. Our overall program GPA is up to 3.2 overall from 2.3 my first season.” And then there is the size – and lots of it. Marsalys Austin (6-foot-3, 240 pounds), Jacob Tatupu (6-2, 255), Chandler Brock (6-2, 260), Cordiallyo Pollard (6-2, 255) Robert Wright (6-2, 310) and Javier Aros (6-2, 280) will put up a pretty big wall for the skill players. Albert White (6-0, 210), Nick Patterson (6-0, 195) Bryant Bowen (5-11, 205) and Andrew Farley (6-0 220) look to comprise a formidable linebacker corps with Patterson and White also playing tight end and Bowen and Farley starting at running back. Elijah Harper (6-3, 185), James Walker (5-8, 150), Malik VegaTatum (6-0, 165), Cori Floyd (5-10, 175) and Kenny Cha (5-4, 130) will fill the skill positions for Weston Ranch and Brandon Brown (6-2, 160) will be the quarterback. The Cougars will be running the West Coast offense with a 5-3 defense. According to Davis, his team’s strengths are its depth and chemistry and its weakness is mental discipline. “We did what we were supposed to over the summer,” Davis said. “But there is still room for improvement. I feel excited and motivated. “We are young at some key positions, but overall I think we are headed in the right direction.” Come in NOW for Weston Ranch opened play last Friday at Ceres and begins playhaircut at 7:30 p.m. and a league great atbegins the Valley Oak League campaign against four-time a league great price. defending (2014 and 2015 in the VOL) and four-time defending state champion Central Catholic of Modesto at home on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

2016 PLAYERS TO WATCH
JACK WEAVER MARK VICENTE GINO CAMPIOTTI QUARTERBACKS Gino Campiotti, Manteca, Jr. Second-year junior is primed for a breakout season with his combination of size (6-3), arm strength, athletic ability and surrounding talent. Mark Vicente, Sierra, Sr. The T’wolves’ spread offense got better as their mobile QB improved during their run to the CIF State Division IV-A championship. Jack Weaver, East Union, Sr. The reigning All-VOL Co-Utility Player of the Year, Weaver’s best season could be his last with more talent, size and depth around him. RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS Ty Beidleman, Ripon Christian, Sr. There is no bigger target in the Manteca area than the 6-foot-5, 215-

pound tight end, an All-SL first-team selection last year.
Jose Garcia, Manteca, Sr. Manteca’s second-leading receiver a year ago, Garcia (34 receptions, 393 yards, 5 TDs) emerged as the top option over the summer. Elijah Harper, Weston Ranch, Sr. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Harper starred for the Ranch in 7-on-7 competitions this summer and could put up impressive numbers in the fall. Aaron Paschini, Ripon, Sr. With few other returners on offense, expect Paschini to be targeted often after he produced 54 receptions and 781 yards as a junior. RUNNING BACKS Kameron Beamon, Manteca, Sr. Beamon again takes the lead role
in the back-by-committee attack, but he’s the home run threat behind punishing fullbacks and a big line. Bryant Bowen, Weston Ranch, Sr. Two-way standout (linebacker) will get his chance to shine as the featured back after splitting carries in a season in which he averaged 8.2 yards a pop.
Martin Garcia, East Union, Sr. The Lancers’ largest lineman at 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, this third-year starter moves to tackle from the center spot. Kyle Reis, Manteca, Jr. Don’t be surprised if Manteca runs often behind its line’s left side with the 6-foot-2, 260-pound Reis at tackle and Justin Kakala at guard.
Marcos Castillo, Sierra, Sr. Jaysen Reindel, East Union Jr. Sierra’s most versatile player (safety, One of the area’s top wrestlers kicker) takes his turn in the backfield pound for pound, Reindel (6-2, following the outstanding career of 245) solidifies the Lancers in the Mark Paule Jr. trenches at right tackle. INSIDE LINEBACKERS Seuseu Alofaituli & Nashon Tamiano, Sierra, Sr. Sierra returns its two leading tacklers from 2015, and they’re both third-year varsity starters and AllVOL first-team selections.
Cordillyo Pollard, Weston Ranch, Sr. Also the right guard for the Cougars on offense, the 6-2, 255pound Pollard recorded seven sacks his junior year.
Ferrin Manuleleua & James Thomas, Manteca Manuleleua made All-VOL firstteam honors as a sophomore while Thomas had a breakthrough season shortened by an injury.
Jacob Tatupu, Weston Ranch, Srs. Yet another two-way standout in the trenches for Weston Ranch, Tatupu may be the area’s top pass rusher at defensive tackle.

Andrew Farley, Weston Ranch, Sr. Physically the area’s most impressive linebacker, Farley is a fleetfooted 220-pounder who spearheaded Weston Ranch with eight sacks.
Joseph Reynaga, East Union, Sr. Led the Lancers in tackles the past two years, including 105 in 2015, but he’ll take on an expanded role as a starting guard for the offense. OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS Devyn Gonzales, Manteca, Sr. An All-VOL second-team selection, Gonzales is poised to have a big year as part of an impressive linebacker corps. Tremayne Willis Jr., Lathrop, Sr. One of the top pass rushers in the area last year racked up eight sacks in back-to-back and earned a spot on the All-VOL second team. DEFENSIVE BACKS Isaiah Cormier & Angel Sena, East Union, Srs.
East Union has high expectations for their two safeties, both entering their third varsity season. Isaias Hunter, Lathrop, Sr. The Sac-Joaquin Section’s runnerup in the high jump has a nose for the ball to go with the outstanding leaping ability. RJ Tisdell, Lathrop, Sr. Intelligent third-year varsity player is the last line of defense for a battletested unit that returns 10 starters. Malik Vega-Tatum, Weston Ranch Sr. Vega-Tatum is a versatile player who gets to step outside the shadows of Weston Ranch’s talented cornerbacks from 2015.

RIPON — A new coach in a familiar atmosphere. That’s what Chris Musseman has brought to the Ripon High football program. In other words, the first-year Indians coach continues to conduct practices and the planning for the upcoming season much like his predecessor Chris Johnson, who stepped down shortly after last year’s successful 4-1 campaign in the Trans-Valley League, 6-2 overall. “We’ve had very productive summer,” said Musseman, who was a longtime assistant coach of the RHS program. “The kids have really dedicated themselves to improving all during the off-season.” The Indians are young with plenty of first-players but with an experience coaching staff. Included are Michael Merchant (offensive coordinator/quarterback), Ken Tyhurst (offensive line), Jake McCreath (tight end/

offensive line), Justin Johnston (running backs), Jake Rodriguez (wide receivers), Jorge Velasco (defensive coordinator/ outside linebackers), Gary Dias (outside linebackers), Glen White (defensive line), Robert Kissee (defensive backs) and Cole Williams (inside linebackers). It’s still too early to tell what’s ahead for Ripon. “Our goal is to have a good and winning season,” said senior wide receiver Aaron Paschini. At 5-11, 175 pounds, he’s one of a handful returning starters. The others are inside linebacker/fullback Bryce Kinsey (5-10, 185) and running back Luis Candido (6-0,
170). Other returners include running back Michael Winters (5-9, 160), linebacker Trent Hawes (5-8, 175), and lineman Jesus Torres (5-10, 265). Senior Andrew Durrer and sophomore Ryan Daggett are taking turns at quarterbacking the Indians familiar Wing-T offense. Durrer could also see action at tight end and middle linebacker in Ripon’s 3-3-5 defensive alignment. “I think we’ve really come together in such a short time,” Paschini said. He’s anxious for actual play to begin to show how much.

RIPON — Ty Beidleman and Jake Beukelman can hardly wait for the season to start. They’re the only returning starters from last year’s Ripon Christian team that went 5-2 in the Southern League — good for third place behind Orestimba and Gustine (the Knights’ only two losses in league) — and 9-3 overall. “It’s no mystery that we graduated a lot of talent,” said coach Trey Ozenbaugh. Other than Beidleman and Beukelman — both are also three-year varsity players — he has the tough task of filling some big shoes. Ozenbaugh is thankful for his strength and conditioning coaches Oliver Pryor and Justin Unruly for whipping the newcomers as well as the varsity returners into shape. That process began earlier this year. “I like the pieces that we have,” said the RC coach. “I think we’re going to surprise some people.” Beidleman agreed. “Our goal this year is to win league,” he said. No doubt Beidleman and Beukelman are the anchor to this young squad. At a towering 6-foot-6, 210 pounds, Beidleman was an all-league tight end. “He’s a match-up problem and our emotional leader,” Ozenbaugh said. Beukelman, who is a 6-1, 215 pound allleague inside linebacker/offensive lineman, is a downhill run stopper. Brandon Vrieling, Zack Cortwright, and Willem Hoekstra are the other returners. Vrieling (6-0, 180) covers plenty of ground in a hurry at offensive line /fullback /outside linebacker. Cortwright (6-1, 175) may be the most athletic player on the team. Ozenbaugh noted that his tailback /wide receiver/defensive back is “just starting to peak as a football player.” Hoekstra (6-2, 205) is listed at fullback /outside linebacker/quarterback. “He played varsity (football) as a sophomore and had a tremendous season until (suffering) a concussion late in the season,” Ozenbaugh said. Mark Ozenbaugh (6-0, 160) leads a group of newcomers, consisting of Dominic Darretta (5-8, 158), Andrew Vander Weide (6-5, 210), Tristan Deshields (6-2, 195) and Michael Kamps (5-10, 170). “We might have mentor the younger players a little bit, especially if there’s something (wrong) on the field that we notice,” said Beukelman of his senior leadership. The younger Ozenbaugh appears primed to handle the quarterback chores.

TOP PHOTO: Junior quarterback Mark Ozenbaugh goes through his progressions before delivering a pass. ABOVE PHOTO: Ripon Christian head coach Trey Ozenbaugh goes over a play with quarterback Willem Hoekstra. LEFT PHOTO: Defensive linemen work on their pass rush moves.
“He’s an intelligent distributor of the ball,” said the Knights head coach. Trey Ozenbaugh also doubles as the offense coordinator. He’s helped out by assistant coaches John Vander Schaaf (wide receivers/defensive backs), David Vander Schaaf (quarterbacks /defensive backs), Eddie Erdalatz (defensive coordinator), Bill Kamps (offensive line/run game coordinator) and Kevin Van Donselaar (assistant defensive coordinator). Back to the newcomers, Darretta is touted as a ball hawk at defensive back and a playmaker at receiver, Vander Weide, at outside linebacker / tight end, moves well for his size, Deshields is “very athletic,” according to his coach, and could start both ways, playing on the offensive line and inside linebacker. As for the sophomore Kamps, he’s likely to see plenty of action at tailback, fullback and inside linebacker. The young Knights take the field Friday at Mountain House. “I wish it was today,” said an anxious Beukelman.
