A Message From The President & CEO PATIENCE By Trish Christensen

W

ith this month’s theme on Hospitality and Tourism, I am keenly aware of the planning forward going on with us and by organizations around us. We are collectively ready to host people and gatherings, and to travel and explore freely once again. Nonprofits want to hold their annual fundraisers and individuals want to get away to see family, friends, and scenery. People are anxious to engage, to go to theaters, to stay in hotels and rentals, and to celebrate together. Hearing or seeing signs that advise masks are required, is a norm at this point, yet omicron is testing us. It is imposing upon us an ongoing element of patience, tolerance, and yes… continued adaptation.

COMMUNITY

In the best interest of our food vendors, members, sponsors, and attendees, we felt it was most appropriate to postpone our Annual Soiree from February 10th to March 10th. And now we wait, and hope things level off and numbers decline by then. We have not been alone in making similar decisions to postpone conferences, fundraising events, and celebrations. Isn’t postponing these things so much better then cancelling?

4

I marveled at how seamlessly we moved standing meetings and programs from hybrid back to virtual only when omicron became a wildfire in mid-January. What a difference over the challenging process we all went through when we had to find ways to move to a virtual world earlier on in the pandemic. Covid is no longer robbing us of doing what we are here to do, and that feels empowering.

Kaiser Permanente Northern California Honored For Providing Safe Patient Care Kaiser Permanente Northern California’s efforts to provide safe, reliable patient care while reducing preventable medical harm are being recognized by the Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF), a global non-profit organization committed to achieving zero preventable patient harm and death. PSMF launched a new program to recognize health care organizations committed to helping achieve zero preventable patient harm and death across the globe by 2030. Kaiser Permanente Northern California is among the first to be named a Highly Reliable Organization (HRO) Champion, for prioritizing patient safety. The new HRO Champions program puts an emphasis on data transparency, a critical component to achieving zero harm and improving patient safety. Hospitals and health care organizations submit patient safety data annually to be more transparent, and to provide patients with the information they need to make informed health care decisions. “We are honored to be recognized for our unwavering commitment to provide safe patient care and commend our

staff for being strong advocates for safety,” said Robin Betts, vice-president of safety, quality and regulatory services for Kaiser Permanente Northern California. “Our hospitals are among the country’s highest performing for minimizing patient injuries, medication errors, and infections. Every day, we aim to protect the health of our patients, keep them safe from harm, and provide the highest quality care.” Every year, medical errors claim the lives of nearly three million individuals across the globe. PSMF believes it’s important to recognize those health care organizations that are committed to reducing preventable medical harm and prioritizing patient safety. “Our clinical care teams put patient safety at the forefront of everything they do, and we are proud of their commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care,” said Stephen Parodi, MD, associate executive director of hospital quality and patient safety at The Permanente Medical Group. “The COVD-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for every health care system, but Kaiser Permanente Northern California is consistently recognized as among the nation’s best for outstanding patient safety, outcomes, and overall experience.”

Discourse of Silence BY SABRA STAFFORD The Mistlin Gallery in Modesto is showcasing the works of prominent Iraqi artist Saadi Al Kaabi and his show “Discourse of Silence” through the month of February. Al Kaabi is a world-class artist and his paintings have been in museums and shows from Baghdad and New Delhi to Paris and New York. “Mistlin Gallery is honored to have Saadi Al Kaabi exhibit his art,” said Talal Mouala, a Syrian art critic.. “His works are complex and provocative, portraying images that Saadi Al Kaabi demonstrate determination, which has distinguished him in the Iraqi studio. He has held on to the values and principles of his own beliefs while suffering aggressions, sieges, plunder and oppression, all of which have threatened his human existence.” Al Kaabi was born in 1937 in Najaf, Iraq. He showed an early aptitude and appreciation for art and began attending the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad in the late 1950s, graduating with his degree from the Department of Painting in 1960. Through the 1960s, Al Kaabi explored and tested his artistic skills with various styles, techniques and mediums. By the 1970s, he had developed his own signature syle that blended Expressionism, Cubism, and elements rooted in the Iraqi culture and ancient history. “Al Kaabi is able to create attention to character and cultural references of the Mesopotamian valley, using the memory of the smoldering people in their spiritual nudity, while also capturing their solitude,” Mouala said. “This is beautifully achieved with transparent colors he drives from the desert and the eternal imagination and loneliness of its visitors.”

COMMUNITY

Over the decades and through the strife in his country, Al Kaabi pushed his own creative boundaries. During the 2003 Iraq invasion, Al Kaabi, still living in Baghdad, turned to his art to express the pain and uncertainty felt by the nation.

8

MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG

“Usually a crisis makes you feel better about your presence in the world… when you feel more aware of your presence, when it burns your insides, you can produce,” Al Kaabi told writer Kaelen Wilson Goldie in “Iraqi Artist Reflects a Lost Generation in a Time of Chaos,” published in the Daily Star in 2005. By 2010, Al Kaabi had left Iraq, first settling in Los Angeles and then Ceres, where he continues to create new works. His exhibit, Discourse in Silence, features some of his trademark styles. “In my artwork, form and symbols intertwine with earth colors, creating the balance among intellectual, rationalistic and physical values within a central core, which is the human being,” states Al Kaabi of his body of work. The exhibit is sponsored by Haider Al Kaabi, Rick and Wendy Allen, Katherine Newton, Vicki Reid, Gary L. Ermoian Investigations D,Crim, CPI, and Marianne Ward. The exhibition will run through February with an artist reception planned for 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Mistlin Gallery. The Mistlin Gallery is located at 1015 J Street in Modesto. Hours are from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. For more information call (209) 5293369 or visit online at https:// ccaagallery.org.

Tourism in Modesto…You Bet! By Todd Aaronson / CEO Visit Modesto Visit Modesto? Yes, that’s what we strongly suggest! Yes, right here in the True Heart of California there’s so much to do and see. At Visit Modesto we’re telling the world all the reasons to play, stay and enjoy all that the region has to offer. In February one of the most beautiful natural events will come alive – The Almond Blossom Cruise. Last year thousands of visitors came to Modesto from as far away as Toronto to see this four-week wonder. This year we are launching the self-guided audio tour you can play in your car while cruising – just go to AlmondBlossomCruise. com to get started or stop by our Visitor Center in downtown for your map. The tour takes you from Rodin Farms where you’ll be able to walk amongst the blossoms (and ride a train in the orchard) to Knights Ferry and over to Roberts Ferry Nut Company for an almond butter milkshake. Along the way you will learn some fun facts about almonds, why Oakdale is the Cowboy Capital of the World, the history of Sciabica's Olive Oil and even how Zorro found his roots in Stanislaus County! Next? Well, then it’s time to celebrate the great outdoors...March brings the Modesto Marathon, great fishing on the rivers and incredible weather to run, bike or walk Modesto’s wonderful parks and trails. While stretching out you can even take a mural tour using our guide at MoMurals.com.

Yet most of us can’t wait until the stone fruit starts hitting the farm stands. It all starts in April. Cherries and Apricots and Nectarines...Oh My! Come on out and celebrate stone fruit season at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market and any of the farm stands in the county. More information is on the Visit Modesto website – Eat & Drink. Don’t forget to add the local entertainment scene to your “To Do” list. From the Gallo Center for the Arts to live music at many of the area's restaurants, pubs and bars there’s always fun to be had. Yes, there’s much to do over the next few months. More importantly, while we are all being careful about our health these days most of the activities mentioned here can be done outdoors or in the privacy of your car with your loved ones. Don’t forget to invite your friends and family too...Modesto has a hotel option for everyone at just the right price.

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT The Farmacy Invites The Central Valley To “Eat With Purpose” Rachel Morrisette - The Farmacy Manager The Farmacy is a simple concept; a good-for-you cafe. We are a vegan restaurant located in the heart of downtown Modesto. With a menu that is entirely vegan and gluten-free, we are offering a healthier option for downtown diners. We take fresh ingredients and create delicious, guilt-free meals. While there are a couple other vegan dining options in town, we take it a step further with our whole-food approach. This means that in addition to not using animal products, we use only non-processed, non-refined ingredients without oils, binders or preservatives. The Farmacy was founded by Erin Doran, a serial entrepreneur who also owns and operates The Century and Nine3One. In the summer of 2018, Erin found out she had several food allergies, which prompted her to seek healthier ways of eating. She quickly found out how difficult it was to find fast, easy, healthy meals that met her needs; a whole-food, plantbased diet.

We were blessed to be able to open in 2020, mid-pandemic. Early November 2021, upon the completion of our beautiful dining room, we opened our doors for indoor dining.

We update our menu frequently and offer daily specials so you can always expect fresh, seasonal offerings. Our breakfast and lunch menu is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. On Saturday’s we have a brunch menu available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The biscuits and gravy and cinnamon pancakes are a couple of brunch crowd favorites. For more information give us a call at (209) 422-6762 or visit downtownfarmacy.com. Follow us @downtownfarmacy

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT Culture Treasures: Art & Music By Peter Grimaldi / PGrimaldi/creative, pete@pgrimaldicreative.com Whenever someone mentions “tourism in Modesto,” the conversation always begs the question, “what do we have to offer here other than farmland and open spaces?” But visitors are often stunned by all the entertainment choices and the cultural treasures we do have to offer here, and it has been my mission to encourage new perceptions and inform the public. As an entrepreneur and businessperson, I found my niche, and my passion, for culture and entertainment right here in Modesto. I could not be a luckier person then to be a creative artist, musician and patron while making my living, helping to support the arts right here in the Central Valley. Having been a freelance graphic artist for twelve years, following a career in the corporate world, I have devoted much effort to promoting, creating, and supporting our area’s hospitality, entertainment, food, and live music economy.

PGC has also been honored in developing and creating promotional graphics for the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, Modesto’s premier tourist attraction. Exclusive designs were created for fundraising novelty merchandise such as posters, t-shirts, hats, and coffee mugs, on up to the impressive full-size banners that prominently decorate the building in anticipation of the museum's ultimate grand opening. My participation in Modesto music and culture does not stop there. I also lead an Americana music revival called the Bluesbox Bayou Band that will perform for Mardi Gras, Saturday, February 19th at the Gallo Center for the Arts, downtown Modesto. I am excited to be working with Visit Modesto to promote this event to fans and guests of our city. We hope to present the band as an example of the high-level talent and diversity of music that we have in our area alongside the top names that regularly perform at the Gallo Center.

My company, PGrimaldi/ creative, has p r o d u c e d hundreds of display ads, posters, digital campaigns, publications, signage, and various collateral pieces for independent artists, promoters, and regional business entities. My services as Art Director for Modesto View Magazine have been a valuable partnership in meeting this challenge. Producing an award winning, monthly print publication that tirelessly supports our local businesses with creative direct mail advertising and social media promotions.

It is gratifying to me that my passions for art and music would fit so well with my goals to benefit the best vision of Modesto. MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG

GRAFFITI USA MUSEUM Exporting and Celebrating Modesto’s Classic History By Chris Murphy Modesto, California, USA has an amazing opportunity to change our culture, our perception of civic pride and take our place in the world of travel and tourism. For too long, Modesto has been associated with less than positive news and information, in fact, that is one of our greatest challenges in attracting jobs, employees and a creating a sense of community. Our performing arts, dining, and music communities are leading the way in changing our culture and the Gallo Center for the Arts took us to the next level. The results are clear with increased travel and tourism revenue, injection of new money into our local business community, making Modesto a destination and improving our community perception. These civic investments work. We can do it again with the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum.

Modesto will capitalize on our unique global position as the “Home of George Lucas” one of the most successful filmmakers of all time. Modesto is the “Home of American Graffiti”, one of the top 100 films of all time,

written about Modesto. Since the 1950s, Modesto has been associated with the cruising culture and today, the annual Graffiti Summer attracts visitors from around the world, bringing outside revenue and positive perception to Modesto.

Under construction now, the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, will showcase our amazing history, draw people together, further build our community brand becoming a place that will draw world-wide attention to Modesto for positive reasons, attracting visitors, from around the world, and even our local communities. The Graffiti USA Museum will be an immersive experience transporting the visitor to another classic time, Modesto of 1962. This is the key to long-term sustainability and to attracting all age groups and future generations. This stroll back in time offers reimagined 10th Street with storefronts, a real classic diner, drive-in theatre, an event center, radio history museum, education center and even classic car sales. Exhibits will refresh regularly to encourage return visits. The round appearance of a classic highway drive-in will attract and excite.

for travel related revenues, there were 2,600 jobs in the hospitality sector with a financial impact in Modesto of $230M (countywide over $500M!) The average traveler will spend in excess of $235 per day. Day-trippers and overnighters all stimulate the local economy. The Museum will turn a single day visit to a multi-day visit, which will deliver more hotel room, performing arts and dining revenues. 25,000 visitors are expected annually at the museum. Please join in and help build this amazing civic project. Local businesses have already donated over $500,000 in services and over $500,000 in donations toward the $4.2 million plan. There are exclusive naming opportunities and the founders that invest to make this dream real. Let’s cruise into the future in a Modesto with renewed civic pride. New Executive Director for Stanislaus Partners In Education

Piscitello Announces Retirement Stanislaus Partners in Education is saying goodbye to one leader who is retiring and celebrating a new executive director Judie Piscitello, who has been the executive director at Stanislaus Partners in Education, is stepping down after 14 years, and Jessica Godden will be the new executive director. "I am strong believer in 'everything has a beginning and an end.' The timing to end this chapter as SPIE’s executive director seems about as right as it could be," Piscitello said. "To all of the wonderful SPIE board members and staff, educators and business partners, whom I have had the opportunity to work with over the past years - thank you. The times shared, friendships forged and the incredible successes which we have enjoyed have been an extraordinary part of my life. "What will stand out in my heart and mind as I look back at the past 14 years is the difference we were able to make in the lives of the teachers and students we reached," Piscitello said. "It is my honor and delight, to introduce you to Jessica Trompetter Godden, SPIE’s new executive director. Jess grew up in Modesto and has a deep commitment to the community. She will be an excellent leader taking SPIE into the future. Personally, I believe SPIE hit the jackpot when we were able to convince Jessica to become our new executive director. Thank you for your continued support of Stanislaus Partners in Education." In August of 2021, Godden joined the team at Stanislaus Partners in Education. In January, 2022, Godden officially became the executive director - taking on a leadership position during a particularly complex time. But, Godden doesn’t shy away from leadership roles during hard times. The ongoing pandemic has created a degree of uncertainty in many industries - nonprofits among them. Thankfully, Godden brings with her a fierce dedication to leadership, creativity, and smart governance. She knows that through hard work, effective relationships, and values-driven decision-making, we can make it through most anything.

It wasn’t until 16 years after high school that Godden returned to school. In 2015 she returned to Modesto Junior College where she declared her intention to major in Anthropology - an education that supported her desire to understand people and culture more. Ultimately, she would transfer to California State University, Stanislaus and graduate in May of 2020 with honors. Godden met her husband, Chris Godden, over a decade ago and they now have two big, loveable, rambunctious, spoiled dogs (Abigail and Penny). Godden loves to run with her dog, Abigail, she is an avid (or obsessive) non-fiction reader and shows her affection by baking way too many sweets or cooking a good meal. She has been known to sing (privately) and enjoys listening to all genres of music but particularly loves jazz, blues, soul and R&B. Godden continues to devote time to community projects through her role as Board President of Modesto’s historic State Theatre, as well as her husband’s car dealership and their deep commitment to philanthropy. Godden has come to value this community greatly. Growing up in downtown Modesto Jessica started going to the symphony at age 5, took part in the Modesto Performing Arts Girls’ Choir, and was part of a World Champion Winter Percussion ensemble. She knows first-hand that Stanislaus County has so much to offer its residents, including the many wonderful people and organizations here. She is honored to get to play a leadership role in any of it.

EDUCATION

Godden was born and raised in Stanislaus County. She is a graduate of Johansen high school. She didn’t have what some might call a traditional path to her career. Out of high school, she worked for over 15 years in the automotive industry. Beginning as a part-time file clerk in the business office of Modesto European (currently Mercedes-Benz of Modesto), JGodden quickly fell in love with the business and looked for every opportunity to learn more. Working her way from file clerk to the reception desk in the Service Department, to Warranty Administrator and finally Dispatcher. In March of 2011 Jessica became the Service Manager for Modesto Subaru where she helped to build the brand and franchise for the next several years, winning numerous customer service awards along the way. Creating Effective Ad Creative Andres Mendez / Director of Marketing, Visit Modesto One of the key aspects of a successful ad campaign is the creative - otherwise known as photo and video. The creative is what tells the story and grabs the attention of your target market. Well thought out and methodical creative is how brands communicate the story behind their products to consumers. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an expensive production team to execute effective ad creative. Now a days you have everything you need to create photo and video for your ads in your back pocket via your smart phone. You just have to keep three things in mind when executing that creative. First you must ask yourself where this ad will be running and how the content of that specific platform looks visually. Often, we use generic creative and just copy and paste that creative into every digital platform for distribution instead valuing the fact that each platform has specific and unique nuances to its content. Speaking the language of each platform will help you speak to your consumer in that world because the consumer’s mentality is different for each communication avenue. Keeping trends in mind and tailoring your creative to mimic trending content also gives your ad creative a higher chance of resonating with consumers. Second is making sure the creative pops in the feed (of that specific platform) and makes people stop scrolling. Reverse engineering what makes you stop scrolling through digital communication outlets will help you create more effective ad creative. Is it a certain type of photo? A certain opening shot in a video? And down the list of scroll stopper tactics. If an ad makes the consumer stop scrolling, you’ve captured their attention, communicated your message, and captivated their attention Third is the CTA, otherwise known as the Call to Action. Make it obvious what the consumer should do after seeing the ad, or content, using your creative. Be clear, concise, and to the point. Ad creative has evolved tremendously within the digital space and continues to do so alongside the evolution of digital communication. So, pull out your phone, go capture some ad creative, and test often. Next month I will break down the strategy behind selecting the right social media platform to communicate the story of your business.
