There are resources to support learning across the curriculum for children aged 1–14 years. Listen to pre-recorded narrations in more than 30 languages, or make your own recordings in other languages. You can purchase over 4,000 unique stickers that can be used to customise any resource. “The TalkingPEN made a huge impact on the children’s development.” Sonia Panchal, Teaching Consultant, Reading

Why use a PENpal? Learning happens most effectively when resources use a broad range of learning styles. The PENpal uses the touch-and-learn technique that children instinctively develop from birth, that along with aural and visual elements, creates extremely engaging learning resources to fully support EAL learners. The benefits of hearing narrations or explanations in the home language are huge. This is the ideal way to create an inclusive classroom or setting. Teachers can customise their own resources to suit groups or individual learners. Add hours of information to an A4 sheet; use small quantities of printed text and then enhance this with recorded explanations, examples or personalised notes. The portable PENpal can be used anywhere in the class, indoors or outside. It is easy to use and runs on AAA batteries. Learners can work individually (using headphones) or in pairs or small groups. The in-built speaker provides high-quality sound. The PENpal can also be amplified with external speakers for the whole class.

How will Learners Benefit?

www.mantralingua.com +44(0)208 44 55 123

The PENpal is one of the most versatile tools available for personalising learning. The multimodal approach opens up the curriculum for all kinds of learners and situations: • Building confidence in speaking, listening and storytelling • Supporting learners of English as an additional language (EAL) • Stimulating learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN) • Challenging gifted and talented pupils/students (G&T) • Learning languages (MFL) • Working with parents/carers in family learning

“The wire-free solution is fantastic: the children can move around freely and pass the TalkingPEN from one to another easily in group situations.” Kelly Woodmore, Class Teacher, Hampshire UK

The PENpal encourages independent learning, which can be guided by the pace of the user. The PENpal not only provides distinct support, but can also become the focus for learning, particularly during Collaborative Learning Activities. Children add their own sounds to pictures

Create your own audio resources! Teachers and children can record more than 60 hours of audio content on to the PENpal and share their recordings with others easily. The recordings are linked to Talking Stickers which can be fixed to reports, mindmaps, drawings, photographs, posters, toys... Record into your favourite picture book, bring the characters to life with sound and then listen back as many times as you like. A great way to involve parents – ask them to make recordings for your class in a child’s home language. Create audio instructions/explanations/labels to support and include EAL learners. Children can build confidence by recording their own narrations and then listening back to their voices instantly.

The TalkingPEN and Labels resource was a Finalist at the international technology in education fair, BETT 2010

YouEdit - giving you power over our EAL resources

Do you need one of our titles in a language that we don't cover? Well, this system enables schools, community groups, councils or universities to add text in Mantra's growing list of talking books. The process is very simple: we provide you with a temporary password, which would enable you to open the book and type in your content. Using the PagePlus DTP system, which is the most popular system used in schools, the user can add text in the language of their choice. For example, the school could choose, The Little Red Hen, and parents or their community could provide the translation. This is a great way to engage parents and get them involved with their children's learning. By having the picture on the page you can adjust the text so that it fits just right. Little Red Hen in Tigrinya supplied by Karen for new arrivals from Eritrea

When you are ready, we would print to the same high standard of our normal books, and of course each page would be sound-enabled to use with your PENpal. Then just wait for delivery! You will have to order a minimum of 5 copies at £8.50 per copy (our books are normally £8.50 each). Therefore, for £42.50, the school or community or EAL co-ordinator would have enough books to solve shortterm problems of accessibility. There are so many occasions upon which councils or schools suddenly face a demand for dual language books, for a group of new arrivals. Enfield Council, for example, recently came up against a sudden need for Bulgarian text with English titles. Now they could use YouEdit to create their own Bulgarian versions of Mantra books.

World Tales We are launching in February our World Tales Series of TalkingPEN picture books for 5 to 11 year old children. The stories have been selected from various parts of the world to celebrate the rich diversity of writing and illustrations styles which are not usually seen in the picture books found in the West. One of the founding principles of this series is to demonstrate to school children that illustrations can have many intriguing styles and colours that are not normally found in high street bookshops and supermarkets. The drama of the illustrations and rhythm of the text are primarily for children 5+ although many of the titles are suitable for discussion for older children and an inspiration for trying out different styles for making pictures and paintings. Tales universally have many common themes - victory of good over evil, tragedy, separation and reconciliation. These are represented in a culturally bound way, which demonstrate the differences and commonalities of people’s heritages across the globe. The series is expected to expand to about 20 titles by the end of the year. The World Tales Series is also a celebration of the rich diversity of language. Many of the stories originate from an oral tradition of storytelling. We will be collecting audio narrations in a growing range of languages to keep alive this rich oral tradition. Please see the website.

15 “I follow the African tradition of storytelling which gives me a great freedom of interpretation of our myths and legends. I am interested in preserving the richness of our cultural heritage for the generations to come. Many of us live in big African urban centres or in the Diaspora and are increasingly losing contact with oral traditions. One after the other our stories and mythical characters are disappearing. Instead of lamenting this phenomenon, I feel it is my role as a writer and as an artist to fight against alienation and amnesia.” Véronique talking about the inspiration behind the her visual and written work.

The program offers the non-specialist teacher in primary school a unique way of teaching French. Each section is well presented and enthralled my class of hot, sticky and tired children at the very end of the school year, no mean feat!” TEEM classroom evaluation

Talking Phonics pack 2 leads on directly from Pack 1. It enables children to make the link between what they see and what they hear through physical interaction. The recordable aspect of the PENpal lets a learner listen to audio versions of phonemes/graphemes and tricky words, record their own versions, and then compare the two. Once children have been supported to access games and activities, they will be able to revisit them time and time again, perhaps unsupported by an adult during their child-initiated learning. The activities built into this pack focus on learning through practical investigation. The pack includes: 10 Charts • 50 picture flashcards • 50 grapheme/digraph flashcards • 6 Silly Question Cards • 62 Tricky Word Tiles • 1 set of Talking Stickers • Guidance Booklet • 1 Talking Dictionary £45 + VAT (PENpal not included)

Initial Letter Sounds

Wild West Mix Up

After exploring the pictures and phonemes, the child will move a counter along the path and match the pictures to the corresponding phonemes. Once successful, the child can cover the picture with the correct phoneme flashcard.

This chart introduces proof-reading. The child must go through the chart identifying all the mistakes, and then decide if there are spelling, grammar, punctuation or layout mistakes.

I Spy

Dictionary Skills

This chart depicts a series of 3-4 letter objects which are pronounced when touched with the pen. The child then spells the words using the phoneme flash cards. By touching the flash cards in turn they will find out whether they are correct.

This teaches children how to use a dictionary to find out how to spell tricky words, by identifying the first few letters of a word. After listening to all the words pronounced and the phonemes, they must identify the first two letters of each word, and then the first three letters.

My Universe: Tricky Words After exploring this fun chart, a child will touch the question marks on the chart to hear a tricky word. They have to match the audio to the correct tricky word tile. If correct, they are rewarded by hearing a fun space-themed sentence which puts the tricky word in context.

Jurassic Maze: Tricky Words This Tricky Word chart is more competitive than the previous one and uses more advanced tricky words. The child rolls a dice and touches the stepping stone they land on. They will hear a tricky word and must match it to the correct tricky word tile. If they are correct they can keep the tile. The player with the most tiles at the end is the winner.

Mnemonics

Building Sentences This chart teaches children how to build sentences that make sense. There are five example sentences, and the child can replace words within the sentences with words on blocks scattered around the chart. If the sentence still makes sense, they get positive feedback.

Seascape Suffixes Once the child has explored the stem words and suffixes on the chart, they can play a game by matching the stem words with the correct suffixes. The stem words are separated into groups: those that need to be changed once a suffix is added, and those that can stay the same.

Similar Words This chart teaches children the difference between homophones and homographs. Explore the scene and the objects outside of the scene. Then match the words that sound the same, for example “see” and “sea”, and finally decide if these words are homophones or homographs.

These flashcards can be used independently to play a matching game. Children can listen to the graphemes, digraphs and the capital letter pronunciations, and they can touch all the picture flashcards to hear the words read aloud. They can then match the graphemes/digraphs to the pictures. They can also record their own pronunciations of the phonemes onto the cards.

Tricky Word Tiles These are mainly for use with the tricky word charts, but can also be used independently. Children can touch the tiles to hear the words pronounced. They can also record onto the tiles, either a sentence containing the word, or a mnemonic to remember the word, or simply their own pronunciation of the word.

6 Silly Question Cards These cards can be used for a simple reading activity. 3 have been programmed as “yes” answers, and three with “no” answers. A teacher or child can write a “silly question” onto one of the cards with a whiteboard marker. Another child then has to touch “yes” or “no” depending on the answer to the question, and they will find out whether or not they are right.

PENpal, Talking Labels & Phonics Guidance Booklet The PENpal works with all the resources in this pack.. The labels further the flexibility of this pack. The teacher guidance explains how the individual components work and suggests extension ideas.

Talking Dictionary The Talking Dictionary is also included in this pack. Listen to and see visual representations of common vocabulary. The words can also be heard in different languages. See p9 for more information.

www.mantralingua.com +44(0)208 44 55 123

Children can learn fun ways of remembering how to spell words using this chart. They can hear the word in full or the mnemonic used to remember it. They can then make up their own mnemonics and record them onto the chart.

In 2012 we developed the Tactile Talk Technology that adapts educational resources for use by blind and partially sighted children. Now, areas on the poster can be highlighted with a 0.250mm border, or Braille characters, for blind and partially sighted people to feel their way around the poster. Then, once ‘inside’ a shape they can hear it speak to them with PENpal or PENfriend. This pioneering technology is the first of its kind in the world. Use your fingers to navigate across the page. When you feel a bump/raised area, this informs you that you have entered a "sound spot". Touch the pen next to the raised area and immediately an audio can be heard. For example, this could be a description of an object (for museums) or the periodic table (for schools).

Tactile Talking Books: In first quarter 2013, we will be publishing the first of several picture books that have delightful sound songs, narrations and effects. For example in the popular The Three Billy Goats Gruff, touch the top corners to hear the story read aloud. Touch PENpal to any of the transparent embossed areas and you can listen to the first Billy Goat sing: “Over the hills and far away, I’m going eat green green grass today.”. Touch the head of the Gruff and hear him say gruffly: “Who’s that there?”

Tactile Titles: Billy Goats Gruff, Marek and Alice’s Christmas, The Giant Turnip, Little Red Hen, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. These softback tactile talking books will cost about £25 each. Please visit website for the latest prices. This Colours and Shapes Chart introduces children to different types of primary shapes from which more complex shapes are made. Touch the shape with the pen and you will hear a definition. What is great fun are the 2 sets of interactive games. Game 1 asks: "Can you find the Star?" If you answer right, the pen says: "Well done"; if your answer is wrong, the pen says: "Try again". The questions in Game 2 get progressively harder but is a simple test to see whether you have grasped the salient points. Each shape has its outline raised so that a blind person will be able to detect it with their fingers. Price £15.00 + vat

We have developed just the answer – another world first - talking panels that could be as large as 60cm x 200cm!

Discover the Collaborative Learning Library of subject-specific sound enabled activities.

You can choose a Collaborative Learning Activity either as a free download/print pdf or purchase a professionally PEN enabled version. 1. A school can download and print as many activities as they want. (Until 31 July 2013 the £75 Collarborative Learning Library subscription is wavered, and membership is FREE. All you need to do is register into the CL library. After registering, select the activities that you want and print them out using your school printer.) There is no restriction on the quantity that can be printed. We recommend that all components are laminated for durability since in-house printed paper is too light to withstand excessive handling. Where there may be a board for games we further recommend that these are pasted onto a cardboard base. If you wish the components to be sound enabled, then you can use our recordable stickers and attach them at the relevant places. 2. The second option is for the school to buy an individual activity. Each activity is professionally printed on 300 gms card and sound enabled to work with the PENpal. A3 or A4 playing boards are laminated and the associated playing cards are delivered perforated. They are ready for instant use. We have found that although it seems attractive to download, print, laminate and cut-out the cards yourself, it is in fact cheaper to buy the activity and get a longer lasting professional output. The paper is replaced with laminated cards, print is picture book quality and sound spots incorporated invisibly - no need for stickers. As well as saving time and money, this option will allow schools to build a useful and attractive professionally produced Library that will grow year by year. You will also gain free access to the ShareLINK software system which further enhances collaboration among peers. Your recordings can be saved and shared with other classes or schools, even schools abroad, working on the same activity. (See page 49)

Voice Recordable Labels Help to develop listening and speaking skills With our FREE CREATELINK software, you can add your voice, music or sound effects to favourite books and posters. Every label can hold up to 1 hour of audio content, and if you are not happy with what is recorded, you can overwrite recordings as often as you like. Children gain confidence in speaking and storytelling, practicing a foreign language. Teachers can communicate clearly with parents in audio. Teachers can also assess children’s confidence in speaking and storytelling. The award-winning Talking labels are being used in many ways: books, play scripts, graphic novels, oral glossaries and dictionaries, mind maps and concept maps, oral histories and timelines, interactive displays, oral diaries, exhibit trails, labelling. (It is this labelling feature that has made PENfriend the best-selling product for the RNIB.) Recordable labels are one of our best selling products. This is why there are multiple sets of labels to ensure that no two labels can duplicate the same message. A single PENpal can hold over 150 hours of content with its 4GB memory. The following is a list of the different types of labels that we have currently but watch the website for new products. “The greatest potential is using the TalkingPEN to generate bespoke learning resources using the recordable labels. These provide the TalkingPEN witih enormous potential, particularly in the ESL area.” BETT 2010 evaluation

Blank labels to customise resources There are basically two types of labels: the majority are designed for students where the content can be overwritten as often as they like. Typically, for example, one child may have a sheet of labels which they can use for various projects and documents. The same pen could then be used with another child and there will be no duplication. On the other hand, teachers often make their own audio content which they do not want pupils to overwrite. For this they can use Teachers’ Labels that only teachers can record on.

Talking Labels Sets A-H for Students

Record directly onto each label. Keep a recording for as long as you like and then record over it if you wish. With a different TalkingPEN you can then make even more recordings. Once you've finished one label set, simply move onto the next. There are over 3000 stickers so far, spread across 8 sets each with its unique number.

Each Set A and B contains the following 381 labels: 54 squares: 2.9cm x 2.9cm 54 circles: 2.9cm diameter 273 circles: 1.1cm diameter £9.95 + vat per set

400 Teacher-Controlled Labels

These labels are ideal for a teacher who may have spent a long time customising resources and who does not wish for them to be re-recorded and erased without their authorisation. For example, they may wish to leave audio feedback or to provide oral explanations of complex ideas in science or leave special messages for parents. These labels allow only teachers to change the recordings and for pupils to listen or playback. A pack contains the following 400 labels: 36 large circles and 364 small circles Teacher Set 1: £9.95 +vat

240 Colourful Labels These labels are different from any other type as you don't need to touch any of the buttons on PENpal to record. Simply put your pen into record mode and then touch the circle to start recording, the square to stop recording and the arrow to play back your recording. The labels can be used over and over again. They are colourful and easy to use by anyone - and ideal for Early Years and SEN. A pack contains 240 labels £9.95 + vat

Washable Talking Labels In collaboration with RNIB we have created these unique labels that can be affixed to clothes to identify colours or give washing instructions! After considerable Research and Development, we have successfully made waterproof labels that will withstand at least 50 washes in washing machines, set at 50°C. Now, blind people can identify colours, materials, washing instructions, etc on the clothes they wear! The labels don’t have to be stitched or ironed on but are attached with just finger pressure. This has never been done before, and is the world’s first! Each label can hold up to 1 hour of audio content and can be written on as well. A tremendous breakthrough!

Laundry Labels Sets 1, 2 and 3 each contain 48 labels per set. £14.00 + vat for each set

www.mantralingua.com +44(0)208 44 55 123

Schools may wish to consider these for the labelling clothes, instruments that need to be washed, plants, or toys in water play. (Any other suggestions would be most welcome!)

More than 800 FREE audio files for picture books in multiple languages!

The PENpal is a powerful learning device that is used in various aspects of education, for example mainstream, SEN, MFL and EAL. Mantra Lingua has the largest collection of talking printed books, more than 50 and this list is growing. Each title has several language editions and presently there are more than 800 audio files.

These audio files that normally cost between £2.50 and £6 have now been made available free of charge. FreeLINK is already installed on your pen, or you can download FreeLINK from our website to your computer for PENpals or RecorderPENs purchased before September 2013.

How FreeLINK works Step 1 Connect PENpal via the USB cable to the computer, which must be connected to the Internet (in order to ensure that all new audio files are available for download).

Download language files

computer to PENpal, you will then see this window.

Step 4 At any instant you can download a maximum of three files. Press “INSTALL” and FreeLINK will automatically load your pen with the selected files. You can make backups and save the files onto your computer. The process is very easy, and we invite you to take as many files as are available on FreeLINK .

The combination of FreeLINK, ShareLINK and CreateLINK software make the PENpal a very powerful, flexible and affordable learning device.

CreateLINK enables you to make your own audio books & posters The CreateLINK Software is designed to give you, the teacher, the ability to create your own sound-enabled books and posters. Allocate your own MP3 recordings to sound spots in CreateLINK and press “GO”. The software compiles all the MP3s and the associated soundspots into one single file which is automatically downloaded on to your PENpal. Touch the soundspot, sit back and listen. Easy.

How CreateLINK works Step 1 Start CreateLINK and you will see a screen with four columns – the first column is for the soundspots and the others are for the various MP3 files. For example, you may wish to have one sound spot audio in English, French, Chinese and German. Step 2 Give this project a title and then select from the predefined range of soundspot profiles. For example, if you wish to enable sound on the Talking Photo Album that you have received (page 23), then select the Talking Photos profile in CreateLINK. Remember to periodically accept new upgrades of CreateLINK as new profiles are added.

Step 3 Make a list of all the audio files that you want to have in the publication you are creating. For example, in MFL, you may wish to have simple songs in French and Spanish. If you have a CD or use the Internet you can save the songs that you want and allocate one French and one Spanish song to one sound spot.

You can add MP3

files from your Music Library

Step 4 Once you have allocated all the songs, press ‘GO’ . CreateLINK then compiles all the files with soundspots into one single file which is installed into your PENpal. Step 5 Touch a soundspot that may be a sticky label, and hear the first French song. Touch the same soundspot again and you will hear the first Spanish song. And so on.

Do not forget that a key feature of PENpal is that users can record their own voice on the same soundspot that had the French and the Spanish songs. So, one sound spot in this example can hold three songs: the French, the Spanish and your own voice!

The combination of FreeLINK, ShareLINK and CreateLINK software makes PENpal a very powerful, flexible and affordable learning device.

Make your own mini Talking Book with

49

Mini-Book Creator!

Children can experience the fun of creating and publishing their own books with this simple software. They can narrate their own audio and can build a display of the titles they have authored! This new software gives the user the ideal tool to suit their needs: MFL students can learn simple words in French by taking photos, typing words and recording themselves speaking in French. For EAL Students, teachers can record speech for pupils so they can practise their English. The PENpal user can practise their pronunciation, build their vocabulary and gain confidence in communicating. (Mini-book Creator is being used extensively in adult education in Norway) Place a picture (a photo or your own drawing) on every page in the software. You can type the text using the software, or wait until you have printed it out and write the text by hand. Then print on to our special Storyfold paper. This A4 paper will fold into an 8-page book. Need more pages? Just carry on and bind with staples and tape. Or, if you want to make talking cards, just cut the A4 paper to the right size.

Record your voice onto every page of your own book! Each page is sound enabled for use with our TalkingPEN. So you can create talking books or talking cards! Easy! Not only can children write their own books but they can also record and re-record their own narrations straight onto the pages. The Mini-Book Creator Pack is priced at £80 + vat. The Pack contains the Mini-Book Creator Software, a PENpal and one pad of Storyfold Paper (50 pages).

ShareLINK is free software that allows schools to share audio recordings with other classes and schools. The software can also be distributed to schools in different countries due to the increasing use of Collaborative Learning abroad. The simple but powerful software acts as a library of all the collective work on different activities and can be shared. For detailed information on the different activities please see the Collaborative Learning Library (page 36). Since activities are being added every day, please go to our website for the latest additions. ShareLINK is only available to people who subscribe to the Collaborative Learning Library.
