19 February 2013

I am enclosing some information about our DiscoveryPEN system along with our company Mantra Lingua Ltd, the London based founder of the DiscoveryPEN System. The salient points that visitors like about the system from last year’s M&H show were the ● ability to create and manage your own content and make changes quickly and easily ● various media that a single pen could access: medallions, leaflets, stickers, etc ● ability to get started with little or no training, both in content creation and front office ● simplicity of design where users can listen at their own pace and sequence ● opportunity to use Mantra Lingua as a one-stop shop for interpretation, design, translations, supply of pens and printing ● low cost of the system, including maintenance, compared to alternatives. DiscoveryPEN is increasingly gaining customers. Oxford University Botanic Gardens - talking polypropylene talking leaflets plus pen Culloden Battlefield Museum, Inverness - self adhesive polypropylene stickers plus pen Bristol M Shed Museum - Medallions stuck to cabinets plus pen St Andrews Golf Museum - options open for student projects Imperial War Museum Duxford - talking stickers embedded in plastic plus pen Fern Trail at Newport State Park, Wisconsin, USA - outdoor talking panels The key benefit they all state is the ease of use by the visitor, the ease of storage and distribution by front line staff, the ease of creating new and temporary trails, the simplicity of operations with low investment and maintenance costs. Accreditation: Mantra Lingua have won a number of awards over the last three years: The Jodi Award in 2011 for Museums (with Bristol Museum) The enABLE Award in 2009 for “the product that changes lives”, resources for the disabled (through the RNIB) and numerous awards in the Education sector: Education Resources Award 2010 Winner, BETT 2012 Finalist,

Guarantee for 1 year parts and labour for normal usage. Faulty pens will be repaired and returned within 15 working days. (‘Normal’ means average usage @ 4 hours per day)

“The pilot project has been so successful that the pen will be extended to more galleries and collections.” Paul Sullivan, Museum Access and Inclusion Officer, Bristol

The DiscoveryLINK Software Once you have assigned all the mp3 files to numbers in the DiscoveryLINK software, you are ready to go to the next step.

1

Assuming that you already have made the artwork for the leaflet, then make a rough copy. On it highlight the places where you want the sound spots and assign the right number as that used in DiscoveryLink.

1

Send us the high resolution artwork along with the rough copy with sound spots.

3

We will pass both through our workflow and deliver to you 1) 10 leaflets or more as specified 2) the compiled file which you download automatically into your DiscoveryPEN from DiscoveryLINK.

2

Should you wish at any time want to make changes to the audio, you can do so easily by replacing the appropriate audio in DiscoveryLINK. Then connect the pen and the new file will be installed automatically. You can make as many changes as you wish without incurring any costs.

5

4

Wish to make a new trail or an audio for a temporary exhibition? No problem, go through the steps above. The control is with you and thereby minimise costs. The DiscoveryLINK software allows you to make changes and add new content easily without the need for our intervention. It looks like a spreadsheet. 1. Select the profile that you wish to make: leaflets, badges, medallions, wall panels, outdoor platforms, sticky labels… 2. Column 1 on the spreadsheet has unique row numbers that represent sound spots 3. Column 2 is for allocating your mp3 sound recordings to each sound spot 4. Connect DiscoveryPEN to the computer via usb. The Green pen symbol will appear to confirm that the connection has been made 5. Click ‘Upload’ and all the mp3 files will be compiled into a single file which is installed automatically into your pen. When the badge is touched the mp3 file will be played back instantly. 6. If you have stickers or badges or want to change or modify audio content, you can do so immediately without our intervention. If however you want leaflets or panels, then send us a graphic of your artwork indicating where you wish each sound spot to be. We will return your leaflets or panels or platforms as desired, ready to use!

Specifications The DiscoveryPEN is a simple but effective and affordable technology which is used in schools, by the RNIB, for Bird recognition and for Museums and Heritage Houses and Nature Trails.

speakers

audio port usb port power pause record

sensor

The pen has 3 buttons although in all cases only the power button is needed to listen to an audio trail. Turn on the power button and touch any ‘sound spot’ printed on leaflets, badges, posters etc. The sensor tip detects the sound spot and plays back the allocated mp3 file. At any time pause the recording or touch any other sound spot. The user defines their own sequence. (The record button is for project work when venues have student visitors, eg talking panels.) The audio port is for headphones or power speakers and can be used by partially deaf people. There is a usb port which is used to recharge the batteries or transfer files for new trails. The silicone sleeve protects against knocks and prevents users taking out the rechargeable batteries. There is also a point for attaching lanyards. Inside is a 4GB sd card (expandable to 16GB. 4GB will give about 200 hours of recording.)

Charging time is between 30 minutes to one hour and the pen will run for 4 hours continuous usage at the rate of 40 words spoken aloud per minute. Common usage is far below this level. The built in-speakers provide enough sound for normal sound environments, and many users set volume levels where they can hold the pen near their ear like a phone. It’s easy to make your own tour.... A step by step approach: 1. Take the Digital Recorder (a high quality portable Zoom digital recorder is part of the Kit) and make an audio description of an artefact or situation. Many venues use professional interpreters. If you need professional interpreters who are experienced in the DiscoveryPEN system please contact me at the address below. 2. Connect the Digital Recorder to the computer and open the DiscoveryLINK software. This is like a spread-sheet with two columns: Column 1 has a set of numbers defining sound spots; column 2 is for allocating your mp3 files for the trail. 3. You can have as many sound spots as you wish. Once all the mp3 files are allocated, press the “Upload” button and the compiled file is automatically loaded onto the pen via the usb port. Change your recordings as often as you like.

Oxford Botanical Garden - Visitor feedback/quotes: “The audio was great. Very easy to follow and find sites and I am directionally challenged. “Excellent guide for all ages. It was very easy to use. I wear hearing aids and I could hear it very clearly. Thank you for an very interesting tour.”

How leaflets are made Once you have assigned all the mp3 files to numbers in the DiscoveryLINK software, you are ready to go to the next step. Assuming that you have already made the artwork for the leaflet, then make a rough copy. On it highlight the places where you want the sound spots and assign the right number as that used in DiscoveryLink. Send us the high resolution artwork along with the rough copy with sound spots clearly indicated. We will pass both through our workflow and deliver to you 1) 10 leaflets or more as specified 2) the compiled file which you download automatically into your DiscoveryPEN from DiscoveryLINK. Should you wish at any time to make changes to the audio, you can do so easily by replacing the appropriate audio in DiscoveryLINK. Then connect the pen and the new file will be installed automatically. You can make as many changes as you wish without incurring any costs. Wish to make a new trail or an audio for a temporary exhibition? No problem, go through the steps above. The control is with you and thereby minimises costs.

How badges/medallions are sound activated All the badges have a unique number that correspond to numbers in DiscoveryLINK. Open DiscoveryLINK, select the badges profile, then allocate your mp3 files as before. Once ready, connect the pen via usb to DiscoveryLINK and the compiled file will automatically be transferred to your pen. You are then ready to start listening when pen touches badge. Want to make changes? No problem. Change the appropriate mp3 files and once again, click ‘Upload’ and the new file will be transferred to the pen.

It is as easy as this, make as many changes without incurring any new costs. Remember, the same DiscoveryPEN will read all sound enabled media : leaflets, badges, medallions, wall panels, outdoor platforms.

How talking wall panels are made This process is similar to the previous cases. Design your artwork and decide where you want to have sound spots. Number them according to numbers in DiscoveryLINK using the ‘wall panel’ profile. Open DiscoveryLINK, and allocate mp3 files to the numbered sound spots. When ready, click ‘Upload’ and the compiled file will automatically be loaded into the DiscoveryPEN. Send us the high resolution pdf with a rough copy indicating where each numbered sound spot is to be positioned. We will print out on durable, tear-resistant polypropylene sheet. Cost indications for a 1500 cm by 75 cm talking wall poster with up to 30 sound spots would be £45.00 each. The same DiscoveryPEN will read all sound enabled media : leaflets, badges, medallions, wall panels, outdoor platforms.

How outdoor talking platforms are made This follows the same process as above using the DiscoveryLINK software. Design, record and allocate mp3 to numbered sound spots using the ‘platform’ profile. We will pass everything through our workflow and print the artwork on polypropylene sheet. These will then be mounted on a platform of your choice and screened behind rain and UV resistant polycarbonate sheet. Prices will depend on size and design of the bespoke platform. Unlike other interactive outdoor platforms/panels, all the electronics are kept inside the DiscoveryPEN, not inside the outdoor panel. Therefore there are no costs for power cables, outdoor air-conditioning, expensive video screens, etc. Also the cost of changing content is low since you just need to replace the artwork sheet using the DiscoveryLINK process.

ANDERSON HOUSE: “We are very excited to get started. There are so many possibilities. This will really benefit our site.” –John Fletcher, Manager of oral histories.

Maintenance Options All pens are guaranteed for one year against faulty parts and breakdown under normal usage conditions. We define normal usage as pens being used on average not more than four hours per day. However the guarantee does not replace your pens automatically since they would first have to be repaired. This can take up to two to three weeks. In order to have the confidence of uninterrupted access to pens, we recommend that you take out a maintenance contract where any faulty pen or digital recorder will be replaced within two working days. Furthermore, you will have upgrades and support to the latest DiscoveryLINK and help with any special project with special requirements like filters (many languages, information levels, etc.) The two support plans available are outlined below. A. Silver Service This is a standard support service, designed if you do not need round the clock telephone support and on site service, but do require full support during your operational day, with an 8 hour response during the hours between 09.00 to 17.00 hours Monday to Friday. You may need this for technical queries regarding the pen or the software. For special projects or service additions extra support can be provided on a time and material basis. Annual Cost: £200 + vat for up to 30 pens. *This includes licence for software B. Gold Service This service offers premier cover, combining comprehensive hardware and software support with a full help desk facility designed to help you get the most out of your DiscoveryPEN System. The cover is a 4 hour response time during the hours of Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00. You may need this for technical queries regarding the pen or the software. For special projects or service additions extra support can be provided on a time and material basis. Annual cost: £350 + vat for up to 30 pens *This includes licence for software The system maintenance is provided for in an annual charge and includes: Labour All parts and electronic boards and batteries Replacement pens and digital recorder 4 or 8 hour working response time to major system faults Remote diagnostics Along with our on-going maintenance service, you will have access to our Account Manager who can give advice and guidance on the upgrading and expansion of your DiscoveryPEN system if your needs grows. “This is probably the most accessible trail of people of all kinds of disabilities in the entire state. I really hope it spreads.” Accessibility Coordinator, Wisconsin Dept of Natural Resources: Fern Trail
