DiscoveryPEN Kit has everything you need to sound enable exhibits and trails
DiscoveryPEN is an electronic device that has an optical sensor on the tip and a speaker at the end. It detects micro-barcodes (barely visible) which are printed on various media - books, leaflets, stickers, posters, panels… (see page 5 for full specifications)
It contains 5 pens, the DiscoveyLINK software, a high quality digital recorder, badges, multipen charger, 10 copies of audio enabled leaflets designed to your choice….
Playback sound when the PEN touches printed media!

“The pilot project has been so successful that the pen will be extended to more galleries and collections.” Paul Sullivan, Museum Access and Inclusion Officer, Bristol
The salient features that customers like about the Collection: ● ability to create and manage your own content and make changes quickly and easily ● various media that a single pen could access: medallions, leaflets, stickers, etc ● ability to get started with little or no training, both in content creation and front office staff training ● simplicity of design where users can listen at their own pace and sequence ● low cost of the system, including maintenance, compared to alternatives Examples of customers…. 5 Easy Steps to make your own audio trails! At the heart of the Kit is the DiscoveryLINK software which allows you to make changes and add new content easily without the need for our intervention. It looks like a spreadsheet. 1. Select the profile that you wish to make: leaflets, badges, medallions, wall panels, outdoor platforms, sticky labels… 2. Column 1 on the spreadsheet has unique row numbers that represent sound spots 3. Column 2 is for allocating your mp3 sound recordings to each sound spot 4. Connect DiscoveryPEN to the computer via usb. The Green pen symbol will appear to confirm that the connection has been made 5. Click ‘Upload’ and all the mp3 files will be compiled into a single file which is installed automatically into your pen. When the badge is touched the mp3 file will be played back instantly. 6. If you have stickers or badges or want to change or modify audio content, you can do so immediately without our intervention. If however you want leaflets or panels, then send us a graphic of your artwork indicating where you wish each sound spot to be. We will return your leaflets or panels or platforms as desired, ready to use!
We are always there to help! Culloden has increased accessibility of the interpretation for partially sighted visitors at Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre with the new audio description tool, the DiscoveryPEN. ‘Hi-tech Pen brings the battle site to life… ’ The Press & Journal Newspaper, Scotland
The DiscoveryPEN is a simple but effective and affordable technology which is used in schools, by the RNIB, for Bird recognition and by Museums and Heritage Houses and Nature Trails. The pen has 3 buttons although in all cases only the power button is needed to listen to an audio trail.
speakers
audio port usb port power pause record sensor
Press the power button and the pen will stay on for 1 hour even if it is not in use. After that, it switches off automatically. The visitor then touches any ‘sound spot’ printed on leaflets, badges, posters etc. The sensor tip detects the sound spot and plays back the allocated mp3 file. At any time, the visitor can pause the recording or touch any other sound spot. The visitor defines their own sequence and does not have to follow a set path. Kinaesthetic learning demands handing over control to the learner! (The record button is for project work when venues have student visitors, e.g. make talking panels and record your comments onto the recordable stickers.)
The audio port is for headphones or power speakers and can be used by partially deaf people. Induction coil systems can be plugged into audio port for clear listening. For groups, portable power speakers, like the classroom talkie, can be plugged into the audio port and fitted around the person. The audio port will also be effective for wire-free group systems. There is a usb port which is used to recharge the batteries or transfer files for new trails. The silicone sleeve protects against knocks and prevents users taking out the rechargeable batteries. There is also a point for attaching lanyards. Inside is a 4GB sd card (expandable to 16GB. 4GB will give about 200 hours of recording.) Charging time is between 30 minutes to one hour and the pen will run for 4 hours continuous usage at the rate of 40 words spoken aloud per minute. Common usage is far below this level. Up to seven pens can be charged at the same time with the multi-charger which is included in the DiscoveryPEN Kit. There are other models of pens (PENfriend, FotoPEN and VideoPEN which is under development), but DiscoveryPEN is designed for institutions such as museums rather than for personal use.
Oxford Botanical Garden - Visitor feedback/quotes: “The audio was great. Very easy to follow and find sites and I am directionally challenged. Excellent guide for all ages. It was very easy to use. I wear hearing aids and I could hear it very clearly. Thank you for a very interesting tour.”
You decide artwork, audio… We deliver talking leaflets as many copies as you want! Talking leaflets can be on plastic foil for re-use or paper to give away to each visitor. Costs are minimal! Once you have assigned all the mp3 files to numbers in the DiscoveryLINK software, you are ready to go to the next step. Send us your artwork and sound files and we will pass them though our workflow. We will send you 1) 10 sound enabled leaflets (or more if required) 2) the compiled file which you download automatically into your DiscoveryPEN from DiscoveryLINK 3) with DiscoveryLINK you can make as many changes as you like, without recourse to us. Change the content or delivery of a sound spot, replace with music if needs be… Adjust the content to demonstrate seasonality… So long as you do not change the artwork, you have full control on audio content Should you wish at any time to make changes to the audio, you can do so easily by replacing the appropriate audio in DiscoveryLINK. Then connect the pen and the new file will be installed automatically. You can make as many changes as you wish without incurring any costs. Wish to make a new trail or an audio for a temporary exhibition? No problem, go through the steps above. The control is with you and thereby minimises costs.
We are always there to help! "This is probably the most accessible trail of people of all kinds of disabilities in the entire state. I really hope it spreads." Accessibility Coordinator, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: Fern Trail
All badges have a unique number that correspond to numbers in the DiscoveryLINK software. Open DiscoveryLINK, select the ‘badges’ profile, then allocate your mp3 files as before. Once you are ready, connect the pen via usb to DiscoveryLINK and the compiled file will automatically be transferred to your pen. You are then ready to start listening when pen touches badge. While we provide our set of standard badges, many organisations make their own, such as Bristol M-Shed and Imperial War Museum.

Bespoke plastic sound spots: Bristol M-Shed Museum, Imperial War Museum
It is as easy as this, make as many changes without incurring any new costs. Remember, the same DiscoveryPEN will read all sound enabled media : leaflets, badges, medallions, wall panels, outdoor platforms.
IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM
"We are very pleased with the Discovery PEN - It is an easy way to increase accessibility within the galleries." Katey Boal, Learning Manager, Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre
This process is similar to the previous cases. Design your artwork and decide where you want to have sound spots. Number them according to numbers in DiscoveryLINK using the ‘wall panel’ profile. Open DiscoveryLINK, and allocate mp3 files to the numbered sound spots. When ready, click ‘Upload’ and the compiled file will automatically be loaded into the DiscoveryPEN. Send us the high resolution pdf with a rough copy indicating where each numbered sound spot is to be positioned. We will print out on durable, tear-resistant polypropylene sheet. Cost indications for a 1500 cm by 75 cm talking wall poster with up to 30 sound spots would be £175.00 each. The same DiscoveryPEN will read all sound enabled media: leaflets, badges, medallions, wall panels, outdoor platforms.

Outdoor weatherproof talking tactile panels! A breakthrough in print has allowed us to develop the Tactile Talk Technology that brings great benefits in cost efficient low print run weather-proof panels. An A1 panel (eg talking map of the EU) mounted on an aluminium base with UV resistant resin protection and 1.5mm thick tactile borders would cost £250 including the sound files for the DiscoveryPEN. Panels can be 300 cm in length or more! Unlike other interactive outdoor platforms/panels, all the electronics are kept inside the DiscoveryPEN, not inside the outdoor panel. Therefore there are no costs for power cables, outdoor air-conditioning, expensive video screens, etc. All the electronics are kept away indoors unless used! Maintenance costs and running costs are hugely reduced. Users can play back audio, answer multiple choice questions, listen to bird song…. Educationalists say using a touch and listen approach in a manner controlled fully by the user, is far more effective than reading large chunks of text. They call this
Kinaesthetic learning Compared to traditional learning styles, for reluctant readers, this form of learning helps in furthering understanding and knowledge retention.

You interpret the outdoor trail & we will make your interactive maps DiscoveryMAP is a new service we are offering that makes interactive maps which reside in your website, and users’ smart phones or tablets. Interpret a trail with visuals, sound, video, points of interest, quizzes etc. That’s all you have to do; we take over - no need to invest in computer operators, or train up staff. You do what you know best - enriching visitor experiences and enhancing their learning; we make GPS controlled deliverables. GPS registers every 2m so, in a trail that may be 3km long, you can have a lot of points of interests (POI). We will deliver three versions of the trail: one that you can fit into your website, and apps for phones and tablets. A visitor downloads the app (for free or for a small amount - you decide) and starts the trail. As they pass a POI, up comes your interpretation! Or, before they decide to buy or visit, a user could explore your website to imagine what they would actually see.

Bring micro-museums into the digital environment Pricing for Micro-Museums We recognise that there are many small museums which would like to use the DiscoveryPEN Collection, but cannot find the funding. We are committed to providing a digitising service for micro-museums. Therefore we will be able to structure financing solutions that will bring many micro-museums into the digital environment. First year starting costs will be £75 for a one pen system. If you can make your interpretation, much like the Stephens Ink Museum, we can set you up within days!!
"The pilot project has been so successful that the pen will be extended to more galleries and collection." Paul Sullivan, Museum Access and Inclusion Officer, Bristol
First of all you do not need a Maintenance contract. All pens are guaranteed for one year against faulty parts and breakdown under normal usage conditions. We define normal usage as pens being used on average not more than four hours per day. However we recommend that you take out a Maintenance contract for two reasons: wthe guarantee does not replace your pens automatically since they would first have to be repaired. This can take up to two to three weeks. With a maintenance contract we replace within 2 working days (only applies to UK; International customers, please call for details) w If you wish to make new trails in the second year, then with a Maintenance contract you are eligible for all upgrades to our DiscoveryLINK software and can make any number of new trails or audio projects. Without a contract, you will have to pay £150 for a second year’s licence of the software. The two support plans available are outlined below. A. Silver Service This is a standard support service, designed if you do not need round the clock telephone support and on site service, but do require full support during your operational day, with an 8 hour response during the hours between 09.00 to 17.00 Monday to Friday. You may need this for technical queries regarding the pen or the software. For special projects or service additions extra support can be provided on a time and material basis. Annual Cost: £200 + vat for up to 30 pens. *This includes licence for the software B. Gold Service This service offers premier cover, combining comprehensive hardware and software support with a full help desk facility designed to help you get the most out of your DiscoveryPEN System. The cover is a 4 hour response time during the hours of Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00. You may need this for technical queries regarding the pen or the software. For special projects or service additions extra support can be provided on a time and material basis. This includes 1 day’s training on site.**Annual cost: £450 + vat for up to 30 pens *This includes licence for software **UK only, pl call for international C. For Micro Museums: If you qualify as a micro-museum (part time operators taking up to two pens to run their one room museum), then we have a very low cost innovative maintenance system that will not dent your budgets significantly. Please call for more details.
The Stephens Ink Museum, a micro-museum open 3 times a week, uses our TalkingPEN.
