The stories from various parts of the world demonstrate to school children that illustrations can have many intriguing styles and colours that are not normally found in high street bookshops and supermarkets. The drama of the illustrations and rhythm of the text are suitable for discussion about our world and can be an inspiration for discovering different styles of writing and illustrations. Tales universally have many common themes - victory of good over evil, tragedy, separation and reconciliation. These are represented in a culturally bound way, which demonstrate the differences and commonalities of peoples’ heritages across the globe.

Who designed LinguaTALK? Clare Seccombe is Managing Director of Ideas Education. She has been a teacher in Sunderland LA for 18 years, specialising in Spanish and French at both Primary and Secondary level. Clare is well-known in the Modern Languages community as being a keen advocate of sharing resources and imaginative approaches to language teaching. She says: “LinguaTALK will consist primarily of a pack of sound-enabled A3 charts. Teachers will be
able to use these charts alongside the PENpal to present new language to the whole class, and then to practise the language. Language is built up from word level and children are encouraged along the way to look at the structure of the language. This pack will be of special use to the non-specialist primary teacher, who needs more support with the language themselves, especially with the speaking and pronunciation. It also invigorates the MFL specialist teacher who wants to try new methods to engage learners. ”

Talking Phonics 2 Talking Phonics Pack 2 leads on directly from Pack 1. It enables children to make the link between what they see and what they hear through physical interaction. The recordable aspect of the PENpal lets a learner listen to audio versions of phonemes/graphemes and tricky words, record their own versions, and then compare the two. Once children have been supported to access games and activities, they will be able to revisit them time and time again, perhaps unsupported by an adult during their child-initiated learning. The activities built into this pack focus on learning through practical investigation. “I found the Mantra Lingua Talking Phonics 2 to be a fantastic teaching and learning tool for all Early Years and Key Stage 1 children. The product is an original and exciting resource for teaching phonics to a wide range of children with differing abilities.” Laura Wells, Ranvilles Infant School Pack Price: £55.00 + vat (PENpal not included)
Initial Letter Sounds
Wild West Mix Up
After exploring the pictures and phonemes, the child will move a counter along the path and match the pictures to the corresponding phonemes. Once successful, the child can cover the picture with the correct phoneme flashcard.
This chart introduces proof-reading. The child must go through the chart identifying all the mistakes, and then decide if there are spelling, grammar, punctuation or layout mistakes.
I Spy
Dictionary Skills
This chart depicts a series of 3-4 letter objects which are pronounced when touched with the pen. The child then spells the words using the phoneme flash cards. By touching the flash cards in turn they will find out whether they are correct.
This teaches children how to use a dictionary to find out how to spell tricky words, by identifying the first few letters of a word. After listening to all the words pronounced and the phonemes, they must identify the first two letters of each word, and then the first three letters.
My Universe: Tricky Words
50 Grapheme/Digraph & Picture Flashcards
After exploring this fun chart, a child will touch the question marks on the chart to hear a tricky word. They have to match the audio to the correct tricky word tile. If correct, they are rewarded by hearing a fun space-themed sentence which puts the tricky word in context.
Jurassic Maze: Tricky Words This Tricky Word chart is more competitive than the previous one and uses more advanced tricky words. The child rolls a dice and touches the stepping stone they land on. They will hear a tricky word and must match it to the correct tricky word tile. If they are correct they can keep the tile. The player with the most tiles at the end is the winner.
Mnemonics
Building Sentences This chart teaches children how to build sentences that make sense. There are five example sentences, and the child can replace words within the sentences with words on blocks scattered around the chart. If the sentence still makes sense, they get positive feedback.
Seascape Suffixes Once the child has explored the stem words and suffixes on the chart, they can play a game by matching the stem words with the correct suffixes. The stem words are separated into groups: those that need to be changed once a suffix is added, and those that can stay the same.
Similar Words This chart teaches children the difference between homophones and homographs. Explore the scene and the objects outside of the scene. Then match the words that sound the same, for example “see” and “sea”, and finally decide if these words are homophones or homographs.
62 Tricky Word Tiles These are mainly for use with the tricky word charts, but can also be used independently. Children can touch the tiles to hear the words pronounced. They can also record onto the tiles, either a sentence containing the word, or a mnemonic to remember the word, or simply their own pronunciation of the word.
6 Silly Question Cards These cards can be used for a simple reading activity. 3 have been programmed as “yes” answers, and three with “no” answers. A teacher or child can write a “silly question” onto one of the cards with a whiteboard marker. Another child then has to touch “yes” or “no” depending on the answer to the question, and they will find out whether or not they are right.
PENpal, Recordable Labels & Phonics 2 Guidance Booklet The PENpal works with all the resources in this pack. The labels further the flexibility of this pack. The Teacher Guidance explains how the individual components work and suggests extension ideas.
My Talking Dictionary The Talking Dictionary is also included in this pack. Listen to and see visual representations of common vocabulary. See page 9 of this catalogue for more information.

Children can learn fun ways of remembering how to spell words using this chart. They can hear the word in full or the mnemonic used to remember it. They can then make up their own mnemonics and record them onto the chart.
These flashcards can be used independently to play a matching game. Children can listen to the graphemes, digraphs and the capital letter pronunciations, and they can touch all the picture flashcards to hear the words read aloud. They can then match the graphemes/digraphs to the pictures. They can also record their own pronunciations of the phonemes onto the cards.

The key learning concept behind viVOS is that it is an instrument that builds knowledge. There is so much information on the web but selecting, collating, sequencing, adding commentary, designing this into a coherent theme is where knowledge skills are built.
The Volcano's publication was built in minutes. We allocated hotspots to play videos from the web, made audio narrations explaining how things happened, and could add information on the trot. It was great creating something so easily. viVOS is very light, large and yet extremely strong - can be dropped, stood upon, yet remain robust for today’s busy classrooms. Tactile Talking Books We have published several picture books that have delightful sound, songs, narrations and effects. For example in the popular The Three Billy Goats Gruff, touch the top corners to hear the story read aloud. Touch PENpal to any of the transparent embossed areas and you can listen to the first Billy Goat sing: “Over the hills and far away, I’m going eat green green grass today.” Touch the head of the Troll and hear him say gruffly: “Who’s that there?” Normally, sensory books are handmade and very expensive. Our TTTechnology allows for mass production and therefore results in a dramatic decrease in price. Every book looks and feels like another high quality picture book, with of course the sound and tactility added. Who’s that there?

Pupils can record their own voices onto paper and then playback at their own pace to aid their learning. • For pupils struggling to read text, the audio narrations can be played, replayed and delivered at the learner’s own pace. • Written instructions for activities can be simplified as appropriate and accessed orally and independently by the learner. This helps to stage the gradual withdrawal of dependence on an adult helper. • The procedure for recording and playback appeals to pupils on the ASD spectrum as it follows three easy routines. • Where pupils have difficulty writing or expressing their emotions, PENpal & viVOS allows them to record their feelings. • With viVOS, substrates can be made from different materials (feathers, cloth, sandpaper…) and yet release sound on touch.
PENpal and recordable labels are excellent as AAC devices for children with special needs.” Roz Conner, Green Wrythe School

You can choose a Collaborative Learning Activity either as a free download/print pdf or purchase a professionally PEN enabled version. 1. A school can download and print as many activities as they want. (Until 31 July 2013 the £75 Collarborative Learning Library subscription is wavered, and membership is FREE. All you need to do is register into the CL library. After registering, select the activities that you want and print them out using your school printer.) There is no restriction on the quantity that can be printed. We recommend that all components are laminated for durability since in-house printed paper is too light to withstand excessive handling. Where there may be a board for games we further recommend that these are pasted onto a cardboard base. If you wish the components to be sound enabled, then you can use our recordable stickers and attach them at the relevant places. 2. The second option is for the school to buy an individual activity. Each activity is professionally printed on 300 gms card and sound enabled to work with the PENpal. A3 or A4 playing boards are laminated and the associated playing cards are delivered perforated. They are ready for instant use. We have found that although it seems attractive to download, print, laminate and cut-out the cards yourself, it is in fact cheaper to buy the activity and get a longer lasting professional output. The paper is replaced with laminated cards, print is picture book quality and sound spots incorporated invisibly - no need for stickers. As well as saving time and money, this option will allow schools to build a useful and attractive professionally produced Library that will grow year by year. You will also gain free access to the ShareLINK software system which further enhances collaboration among peers. Your recordings can be saved and shared with other classes or schools, even schools abroad, working on the same activity. (See page 49)

• We feel that the product will really help to support literacy and learning languages. • The greatest potential is with using the talkingPEN to generate bespoke learning resources using the target stickers. These provide the device with enormous potential, particularly in the EAL area. • In terms of the products that we have evaluated, this stands out as innovative, exciting and full of potential. BETT 2010 Judges’ comments
“The possibilities are endless!”
Blank labels to customise resources Record directly onto each label. Keep a recording for as long as you like and then record over it if you wish. With a different PENpal you can then make even more recordings. There are basically two types of labels: STUDENT LABELS for students to record and re-record as often as they like. For example, one child may have a sheet of labels which they can use for various projects and documents. The same pen could then be used with another child and there will be no duplication. Each sticky label plays back 1 hour of sound.
Talking Labels Set A-H for Students
Jeanette Redding, Inspector, Barnet “This is one of the most enjoyable and useful resources I’ve seen in a long time. Do try it, you’ll be amazed at what it inspires you to do!” Dave Lewis, TEACH PRIMARY TEACHER-CONTROLLED LABELS for those situations where teachers have spent time customising resources and do not wish them to be re-recorded or erased without their authorisation. For example, they may wish to leave audio feedback or to provide oral explanations of complex ideas in science or leave special messages for parents. These labels allow only teachers to change the recordings and for pupils to listen or playback.
Re-recordable labels in each set. Use over and over again!

PENpal is a digital reader. On the nib end there is an electronic sensor that detects microbarcodes, so small that they are barely visible. On identifying a code, it signals the correct MP3 sound to play back. The 4GB memory will hold about 240 hours of MP3 sound; it can be expanded to 16GB. One hour charge of batteries will run PENpal for 6 hours on average. When you record your voice, the recording is ascribed to a code for future playback.
