(South East Surrey and Sussex Support Group) Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a rare disease with around 1 in 5,000 people diagnosed with one of the syndromes. However, it is feared there could be more undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. For those with a diagnosis in South East Surrey and Sussex there is a support group offering help to those in need. Thank You RH10 Residents!
Since September last year when a tragic motorbike crash left a Copthorne man paralysed from the chest down the community of RH10 has rallied to raise more than £20,000 to pay for adaptions to the family home, the family now want to say thanks for the help and support they have been given.

n Monday, September 26 2016 Carl Martin suffered life-changing injuries and his family’s world was turned upside down. Carl, who is a former motorbike racer and regular track day participant, was left with a punctured lung, broken ribs, fractured neck and a crushed spinal cord leaving the father paralysed from the chest down. Carl underwent rigorous surgery to prevent further paralysis, spending four weeks in St George’s Hospital, London before being transferred to Stanmore Spinal Rehabilitation Centre. It was whilst at Stanmore that the family marked their three-year-old daughter Jessica’s birthday as well as Carl’s birthday and Christmas and New Year. In January, Carl was discharged from Stanmore but was unable to return to the family home with his daughter Jessica and his wife Zoe because the home is not suitable for wheelchairs. He is currently resident at Crawley Hospital where he is receiving treatment and support for the horrendous injuries he received that fateful day last year. It has been more than six months since the family were pulled apart, however, on learning of the family’s situation, friends, family and the wider community have given time and money to
help unite the family once again. Family friend Sarah Kiely set-up a JustGiving page which received more than 400 donations totalling £20,110. Fundraising events for the family have included cake sales, fun runs, sponsored walks and a quiz night and now one of Zoe’s friend’s, Sandra is taking part in a 60km walk this month. Sandra and her husband David have already organised several fundraising events including one in February which raised more than £1,600 alone. The family home is now a third of the way with adaptations which have seen the downstairs area demolished, making it openplan and complete with a wet room and a wheelchair lift. Once complete the family plan to move back and be reunited once again. They will continue fundraising to pay for specialist equipment. As we move into summer and from the indoors to the outdoors, the family are now looking for landscape gardeners who might be able to help provide better access for Carl in the garden so he can spend the summer months with Jessica and alterations to the driveway to make parking and wheelchair access easier. Zoe said: “Carl and I want to thank everyone for their kind donations and messages of
DIY Heroes Zoe wants to thank all of those who have supported her and the house adaptations, including: Finns Motorcycles who auctioned sports pictures and donated profits from private bike sales. R Edgar Building Contractors who have taken the main build on with reduced labour rate. Britannia Crest who have supplied skips. Matt Yeoman of My Build who has given his time and labour to install windows and doors. GB Electrics with RM Electrical who are rewiring the house. Stanton Construction, Andrew Sarson, Mark Thomas, dozens of carpenters and painters and the East Grinstead Lions.
support. Everyone involved has kept us so positive believing we can look forward to a bright future of having our family back together again. It has been incredibly uplifting to read all the kind words and to see those who have offered their time to lend us their skills has been overwhelming.”

COMMUNITY RH History Uncovered:
The Real Dad’s Army: Memories of the Home Guard
On the evening of May 14, 1940, the Secretary of State for War, Anthony Eden announced the formation of the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV) who would become better known as the Home Guard. Raymond Neave of Sussex, then aged 15 was one of those who answered Eden’s call - this month, RH History Uncovered looks back.
S
ince September 1939, Britain had been at war, with Sussex at the frontline of UK defences, the threat of invasion had been a real fear for many Britons as war raged across Europe. Operation Sea Lion, a Nazi invasion plan had identified several parts of the Sussex coastline as vulnerable points to breach British defences including Camber Sands and Bexhill-on-Sea. The Home Guard would act as a defence force in the event of an invasion. The organisation, a wing of the army, was composed of more than a million volunteers who were otherwise ineligible. Men between 17 and 65 were expected to sign-up if they were not in military service and included those who worked in reserved occupations, too young, or too old – hence Dad’s Army. Despite not being old enough to join officially, Raymond Neave at just 15 enrolled in his local Home Guard – D Company 20th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment based at Heathfield Park in East Sussex.
By Jacob White The Home Guard grew – the Heathfield membership swelled to more than 100 members by 1943, the younger men joined the Army Cadets meaning that the Home Guard could focus on older men. Talking about his memories, Raymond who is 90 next month said: “I was too young to think too much about the consequences at the time – thinking back it is sobering to think what could have been.” Heathfield was smaller than it is today, members knew each other through school, work or socially; this helped to ease the burden of war and brought a sense of camaraderie among the Home Guard. Raymond said: “My older brothers had gone off to war to fight – it was a worrying time for my mother. I was proud to be part of the Home Guard and do my bit for the war effort.’ “Home Guard life was not like the sitcom Dad’s Army, but if you’re looking for a comparison, our ‘Captain Mainwaring’ was Mr Wheale, who was a shoe repairer – everyone did their bit.”
The Home Guard stood down in 1944 before formally being disbanded in 1945. Raymond would go on to complete his National Service from the summer of 1945 as the war came to a conclusion in Europe.

Go Wild!
Discover Wakehurst’s Wild Woods There promises to be a raft of amazing things to experience at Wakehurst’s Wild Wood Festival between Saturday, May 27 and Monday, May 29. This is a chance for the whole family to get out into the woods and immerse themselves in all the magic the woods have to offer. By Jacob White
W
Children will love lighting fires, taking part in hands-on crafts and letting off steam at Treetrunk Trek. They will also adore taking a close-up look at nature in the dropin photography workshop or making a mark on the woodland art wall. Tree climbing is always the most popular activity for the adventurous, run by fully-trained climbing experts with the relevant safety checked rope systems.
akehurst is home to a world-famous botanic garden and Millennium Seed Bank – one of the world’s largest seed conservation projects. As well as paying homage to flora and fauna, what you might not know is what lies just beyond - an incredible 500 acres of ancient managed woodland and the stunning Loder Valley Nature Reserve – waiting to be discovered and explored. This year’s Wild Wood Festival will be held in Pearceland Wood, which is only open for a few months a year to keep it free from damage and encourage natural growth to flourish. Here, you will be able to get hands-on as you nestle in a giant dormouse nest or burrow into a badger’s sett of coppiced hazel. You can also gather round a woodland kiln to see the sparks fly or, you can rest in the woodland shelter to eat from the outdoor oven.
Woodsmen will be at work making all sorts of interesting objects and a Wakehurst arborist will demonstrate the art of coppicing while explaining the lifecycle of the woodland in which they work. The importance of conservation is a serious theme running through each day and visitors hear what Kew is doing to protect woodlands all over the world, so future generations can enjoy them.
After all that full-on and super-charged high-octane activity there will be plenty of time to chill out and relax with tales of folklore from days and theatre. A picnic area, a pop-up woodland café and a campside barbeque will make sure everyone is well fed and watered and that nobody goes hungry on their visit to the woods.
A Wakehurst day admission ticket includes entry to the Wild Wood Festival. Normal garden admissions prices apply – Adults £12.50, Children (16 and under) free. Some activities incur extra cost (cash only). For more information, visit: www.kew.org/wildwood

What’s on at Wakehurst
Recovery from the Great Storm of 1987 In the year of the 30th anniversary of The Great Storm, Wakehurst is celebrating the incredible regeneration of its woodlands.

Secret Structures exhibition – inside the story of plants and fungi
On the night of the October 15/16 1987 winds gusting up to 115mph ravaged the South of England and the Wakehurst landscape was devastated with the loss of more than 20,000 trees.
(Held in the Atrium of the Millennium Seed Bank) Opened: April 7 Free
After replanting, Wakehurst is looking better than ever. This year their events, school holiday activities and guided walks all have a theme of encouraging visitors to learn more about the woods. In fact for Wakehurst the Great Storm could be seen as a blessing in disguise, it meant a virtual clean slate for their arborists and the start of phytogeographic planting in our woodlands. Trees were planted according to areas of the world that they are native to, meaning that the areas have been planted to respect geology and topography rather than political boundaries.

Summer Skin Care Essentials Summer is a time to get outdoors and enjoy the sun but remember there are things to keep in mind when it comes to your skin – the hot and humid days can take their toll if you do not take extra care. By Jacob White
H
ere are some skin care essential tips to keep in mind this summer to help keep you safe in the sun. If you like to bronze, remember to let it happen gradually over a series of days. Exposing yourself to intense sun for long periods for the sake of getting a quick tan can have serious effects on your skin, not to mention the risk of sunburn and sunstroke. Use a sun tan lotion with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30 to protect your skin. Drink Water! At least eight glasses of water-a-day is recommended. Carry a bottle
Horticulture Unites Over Melanoma
For green-fingered readers, Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh are just two of the TV gardeners supporting the Watch Your Back! campaign devised by the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund. The initiative is partnered by the Garden Centre Association, the Professional Gardeners Guild and The National Allotment Society and supported by more than 150 garden centres across the UK.
Men and Melanoma

of water with you and drink from it regularly throughout the day, by doing so you will help prevent dehydration, wash out toxins from your body and ensure you are at your hydrated best! Insect repellents are a must if you are planning to travel abroad this summer but even at home on sultry days the heat brings mosquitoes and many other biting insects!
Stay feeling fresh and cool by taking a misting bottle of water with you, whether going to work, to the beach or shopping, use to give your face and body a freshening cool off. Exfoliation is a good idea in summer as dead cells clog up your pores and can cause spots. Use a scrub which will not dry your skin too much. Don’t forget your feet! They are on show now more than any other time of the year, use a foot scrub. Massage this into your feet and legs in a gentle upward motion to exfoliate dry skin before applying moisturiser. Apply body oil on heels at night, then pop on some cotton socks and leave on overnight.
second fastest in women, with men 70% more likely to develop the disease, typically on their backs and in areas difficult to spot, making the warning signs easier to miss which can lead to a later diagnosis and consequently leading to a higher death rate
Raising Awareness
Melanoma rates in the UK have more than quadrupled in the past 30 years, however many of us still don’t understand the need, or have the motivation to use sun protection regularly or check skin for signs of change and danger signs.
Protect: Wear SPF30 sunscreen, sleeves, a hat and seek shade between 11.00am and 3.00pm Detect: Regularly check skin for changes and know what to look out for The Watch Your Back! campaign Prevent: Melanoma and is raising awareness by promoting other skin cancers but enjoy the following simple advice: your time outside

Dementia Awareness Week 2017
I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.
We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos

CHILDREN
Giving Your Child The Gift Of Music The benefits of giving your child the gift of music are great in number! Amongst them, your child will develop a new skill, they will be given the opportunity to write, perform and generally enrich their life in a way many other hobbies do not offer and the benefits are not limited to visible payoffs! By Jacob White
F
rom the first time your child picks up a musical instrument through to the day they finally crack that legendary solo, they are benefitting in so many ways that at first you might not realise but we have a list of just some of the ways that your child can benefit from the gift of music.
Improved Maths Skills Playing a musical instrument may appear to be a creative act but there are actually many parallels to maths. Music and maths are interwoven – by understanding beat, rhythm and scales, children are learning to divide, create fractions and recognise patterns.
Increased Memory Skills Learning to play a musical instrument teaches a child how to create, store and retrieve memories more effectively.
Improved Reading Learning and playing music requires constant reading and understanding, children need to identify a note on a page and recognise which note to play, how long to hold it, what finger to use and how loud to play it.
An Understanding Of Perseverance And Sense Of Achievement Learning to play a musical instrument takes time and practice and under tuition from a professional tutor, your child will be set short and long term goals – they will need perseverance to achieve the goals but once they do they will feel a sense of achievement. Improved Co-Ordination Playing a musical instrument requires the brain to work at high speeds, reading music is converted in the brain to the physical motion of playing the instrument and children who play musical instruments often have improved hand-eye co-ordination.
Gill Taylor
ALCM; LLCM(TD) • Piano • Oboe • Music Theory Tuition
An understanding Of Responsibility Most musical instruments require maintenance – anything from oiling to tuning. Encouraging your child to stay on top of maintenance creates a level of responsibility for them and when they are responsible for something they are more likely to take care of it. Improved Social Skills Depending on the musical instrument, if your child plays their musical instrument in a group setting they are required to play together and collaborate, interacting with other children giving them the opportunity to make friends.

Keep Your Cool!
Have you ever wondered what the words cabin fi lter or pollen fi lter mean when you spot them on an invoice after your vehicle has been to a garage and been serviced? By Ben Morley
T
he cabin filter or pollen filter has a lot of work to do, and it is there to protect you from the fumes, dust, dirt and general nastiness that is in the air as you travel. If this filter is not regularly changed, it affects the performance of your air-conditioning system and heater. It does not stop there, you can get your air-conditioning system serviced for want of a better word. This usually involves an anti-bacterial cleaner being run through the car’s heater system to kill off any nasties that might cause bad smells when you switch it on.
The reality of this job is that your heater system will be set to re-circulate and an aerosol spray is let off in the car with the doors shut (no one is in the car). This circulates for several minutes and does the job. It makes sense to change the pollen filter at this time as well. On the mechanical side of the air-conditioning, the refrigerant will be recharged to required levels, the oil in the air-conditioning system will be topped up, a thorough check for leaks and any moisture or air that has found its way into the system will also be removed.

On average an airconditioning system will lose about 10% of its refrigerant every year. So if you use it a lot, it’s something that is worth getting checked regularly. Air-conditioning is helpful to drivers all-year-round, not just in the summer months to keep things inside the car cool. In case you did not know, nothing will clear moisture inside of your windscreen quicker in the morning than switching the airconditioning on.

Exercise Tips For Dogs Think just walkies or a game of fetch will keep your dog happy and healthy? Think again – there are plenty more ‘pawfect’ ways that will help your four-legged friend stay fit, in shape and disciplined. Who knows - you could find yourself getting fitter too! By Shelley Welti Play flyball
Set up an obstacle course An obstacle course can keep your pup’s body and mind in tip-top shape, and they are easy to set up in your garden! Use cones, or plastic bottles for weaving in and out of, wooden planks, pop-up tunnels and even the kids’ slide for a fun agility course guaranteed to get them – and you – panting.
You may have seen flyball at Crufts, been amazed at the speed of the furry four-legged competitors and thought that it was just a sport for well-trained athletic dogs. Why not have a go with your dog? Find a club or teach your dog yourself! Get your doggy-loving friends and their pets together and spend an energetic afternoon hosting a relay!
Go for a run Running is not only good for us humans but our dogs too. Running – at a steady pace, increases your dog’s stamina and strengthens their muscles, leaving them fitter in the long term. Pound the pavements of your usual evening walks or let your dog run free on your weekend walks. Just don’t run too fast for dogs with little legs; you don’t want to tire them too quickly or cause them to pull any muscles.
In a game of flyball, dogs are in teams and race down a course complete with hurdles to get a tennis ball from a box at the end of the course and then run back to the start, tackling the hurdles with the ball in their mouths. The aim of the game is to finish first. While your game may not be Crufts standard, it will be fun, and everyone involved will get a good workout! Sniff and search Another game that you can easily set up in your garden! Hide treats and your dog’s favourite toys in difficult-to-find places in your garden and encourage them to sniff them out and bring them to you, quickly. This can be played throughout your home on days when walkies due to the temperamental British weather isn’t an option! Puppy play We all know that dogs love to socialise and it is a natural way for them to keep fit. Next time you plan to meet up with fellow dog walkers, let your dog enjoy running, rolling and playing with other dogs to burn calories and build their social skills!

Open Your Garden For Charity
Are you green-fingered? Do you enjoy doing your bit for a good cause? If your response is yes to both questions, have you thought about opening your garden for charity? It is simple and can be rewarding. This year marks the 90th birthday of the National Gardens Scheme so what better time to get involved? By Jacob White
T
he National Gardens Scheme has a rich and fascinating history, since 1927 it has raised more than £45 million for nursing and caring charities across the UK. Its origins stretch back to 1850s Liverpool and a merchant by the name of William Rathbone who employed a nurse to care for his wife at their home. After his wife’s death, Rathbone kept the nurse on to help the local poor and sick and he would go on to raise funds for the recruitment, training and employment of nurses to go into deprived areas of the city, based on this idea of local nursing district nursing spread across the country as a voluntary organisation. Following the death in 1926 of the organisation’s patron Queen Alexandra a council member came up with the idea of raising money for charity by asking people to open their gardens to visitors and asking for a small entry fee that would be donated – the next year the National Gardens Scheme was founded.

Open Your Garden
If you are wondering whether your garden is worth visiting ask yourself the following few questions – Is it interesting? Is it attractive? Is it well-maintained? Has it got ‘character’? Can you offer refreshments? Do you enjoy talking about your garden? Are you ready for an enjoyable and inspiring day? Many of the gardens part of the scheme are small back gardens that have been made special by hard work, skill and the love of gardening. How To Add Kerb Appeal To Your House First impressions count – you might be surprised to learn that it only takes a quick spruce up at the front of your house to add some serious kerb appeal. By Jacob White
A
ccording to property experts, it takes on average no more than eight seconds for potential buyers to decide whether or not they like a house. Whether you are selling or not, a tidy entrance, neat drive and rubbish-free front garden all help to make a good and welcoming first impression.
It is estimated that an attractive garden can add thousands to the selling price, while a neglected plot can knock money off. Make sure your front garden entices potential buyers and general visitors through the front door, rather than send them heading in the opposite direction.
Opening Doors A lick of paint can work wonders for your street cred. Strip off blistered and cracked paint and fill any cracks! A strong colour on the front door makes a real statement – current favourites include matt finishes in dark grey and dark aubergine. Let There Be Light! Front doors need light, for safety and for practical reasons – security lights activated as you approach are available in a variety of styles. Other lighting options include lanterns or a single statement light which can be fitted to a porch. Make Sure It Is No Façade A tidy façade is a welcoming one so repaint, re-point and render over ugly brickwork where necessary. Colours should be in keeping with the period of the house and other houses on the street – if you live in a conservation area keep this in mind! Your Window On The World If your windows are dirty that can scream that your property is uncared for, so ensure they are kept clean. Rotten window frames should be replaced in a design that suits the rest of the house – if painted make sure the colour complements the brick or stonework.

Driveway To Hell? It might appear to be simple advice but remove rubbish, sweep up leaves and tidy trees and border hedges. Touch up paths and the driveways where needed by cementing loose tiles and slabs and remove any weeds between slabs. Your Number Is Up! Again, simple but effective! Always make sure that your house number is clear – whether on the door, on a plaque, on a wall or on the garden gate your house number should be clearly visible for visitors from the roadside. Front Garden Accessories A house is ultimately a home and as a result there will be items constantly outdoors but some simple tricks make a world of different! Hide bins and recycling boxes neatly behind screens and pile fire wood in purpose-built log stores.

Every month, we talk to over one hundred thousand South of England households – Do you want to talk to them too? These days, the options for marketing your business are almost limitless. A few years ago, all most people did was chuck a listing in the Yellow Pages, join a local networking group and rely on word of mouth. In the 21st century, the landscape’s changed, a lot. New media’s come in, in a big way; and every few months there’s a new ‘shiny object’ that’s described as ‘the one thing that businesses must do’. At Mantra Magazines, we’ve got an alternative. Because, whilst Facebook and Google are important, every single month we can testify to the fact that print advertising is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving.
Over the last 10 years I’ve really built up a good rapport with RH Uncovered and I really trust what they do for me, so on that basis I really wouldn’t feel that I would go anywhere else Tim Burberry, Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating
They are very easy to talk to, nothing is ever too much trouble and they get things right, first time. There is no stress involved in dealing with them. They know what I want and return something that is pretty much perfect Greg Fergusson Fergussons Auto Services,
Every single year since we started out, our business has grown; and there’s a simple reason for that: businesses want to reach out to their prospects in a way that’s genuine, trustworthy and builds relationships. The fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more difficult to do that online, when your prospect doesn’t get to retain your message, dwell on it and decide whether it’s for them or not. For strong, long-lasting and profitable relationships with your target market, print advertising is still where it’s at, and given that advertising with our magazines can give you access to over 100,000 homes, that’s no surprise. Call us today on 01342 718348 for more details on how we can help you.
