The Crawley Bowls & Croquet Development Group Would you like to have fun and meet new people? The town’s bowls and croquet development group is behind an initiative to get people involved regardless of age, experience or sporting prowess – I spoke to the group’s chairman Rod Saward to find out more and how you can get involved. By Jacob White
T
he sport of bowls dates back to the 13th century and for generations has been a popular leisure activity whether as lawn bowls, short-mat bowls or ten-pin bowling and today it has a global reach as a competition sport with lawn bowls featuring as a medalling event in the Commonwealth Games. However, all too often there is a perception that bowls is a sport for the elderly and those in the twilight of their life. Rod Saward, Club Captain of Crawley Town Bowls Club is on a crusade to change that opinion and is doing all he can as Chairman of Crawley’s Bowls and Croquet Development Group. Rod, who used to work for Crawley Borough Council set up the group in 2001 once he retired to help bring the bowling clubs of Crawley together. In the past the multiple bowls clubs in the town worked on their own projects and did not fully collaborate in the successful way that they do today. An all-rounder when it comes to sport, Rod who played football until the age of 60 and who has experience of being both a football and swimming coach says that bowls is a sport for anyone of any age as it is a level playing field whereby players do not have a distinct advantage of age or gender. The development group supports the young and the old in it’s work, Rod said: “Putting back gives me immense happiness. Seeing the kids with the joy of sport gives me a lot of pleasure.” In the first session of the group, 20 young people turned up and of that three went on to play at a national level. Rod is quick to point out that as well as the sporting benefits, bowls is a great social activity – bowls is both a summer and winter sport so it is great to get outside in the fresh air. Rod said: “All are welcome regardless of age, the young might join now but it’s not about now.
The Bowls and Croquet Clubs Involved Crawley Town Bowls Club, Langley Green Southgate Park Bowls Club, Southgate Park Hawth Bowls Club, Southgate Park Downsman Bowls Club, West Green Blind and disabled bowlers, West Green Popes Mead Bowls Club, Willoughby Fields Grattons Indoor Bowls Club, Pound Hill West Sussex Short Mat Bowls Association Crawley Croquet Club, Worth Park What we do is sow a seed. If we plant something now in future life – maybe 20 to 30 years’ time they might return to the wonderful sport of bowls.’ “For some of our older players bowls might be the only social interaction they have all week. It’s a sad reflection of the society we live in but those who attend often say they wish they had done it years ago! We promote the lovely sport!” Today, under the umbrella group the clubs work together effectively and in collaboration with Crawley Borough Council are able to oversee facility maintenance, better organisation and legislation support where it comes to working with young and vulnerable people. Bowls is far more casual today than it once was – the formality for club sessions has gone with polo shirts and shorts largely replacing pressed trousers and the ties and in that vein the group helps to promote croquet as well as with a mission to combat the image of croquet as being an elite sport. What motivates Rod? Rod said: “As I once said at a club AGM, I don’t want to be looking down from the big bowling green in the sky and watch our sport die. We must move with the times and wake up – we’re now in the 21st century.”
For more information about The Crawley Bowls & Croquet Development Group and how you can get involved with playing bowls or croquet in Crawley, call Rod Saward on 01293 538785.

Happy Sussex Day!
For the past 10 years, June 16 has been designated Sussex Day. The day when the people of the historic county celebrate the area’s rich heritage and culture - this month, RH History Uncovered looks back to 10 years-ago when the day was first celebrated and where the idea came from. By Jacob White
S
ussex Day coincides with St Richard’s Day – the feast day of St Richard of Chichester, Sussex’s patron saint. The date June 16 marks the anniversary of the transfer of his body from its original burial place in the nave of Chichester Cathedral to an elaborate shrine in the same building in 1276. The idea of Sussex Day came from Worthing resident Ian Steedman who in 2006 suggested the idea to Henry Smith who is now the MP for Crawley but at the time was leader of West Sussex County Council (WSCC). Smith liked the idea and WSCC officially recognised the day 10 yearsago in 2007. By 2013, the Sussex flag was flown in each of the six rapes, or sub-divisions of Sussex in the week leading up to Sussex Day - it flew over Council House in Chichester, Maltravers Street in Arundel, St Nicholas’ Church in Bramber, Lewes Castle, St Nicholas’ Church in Pevensey and Hastings Castle.

Henry Smith MP said: “Sussex is older than England. Our county has some great heritage – Sussex has been on the frontline of our national story from the Norman Conquest to the Battle of Britain.” Whilst Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles in 2013 formally recognised and acknowledged the continued existence of England’s 39 historic counties of which Sussex, famed for its bonfire celebrations, arts festivals and musical heritage is proudly one.

Let it be known: the 16 June of each and every year shall be known as Sussex Day. Sussex day shall be celebrated according to the rites and traditions of Sussex. Let it be known all the people of Sussex shall be responsible for the maintenance of those boundaries that join to those of our neighbours. Let it be known all the people of Sussex shall be responsible for all the environs within those boundaries. Let it be known, the people of Sussex shall recognise the inshore waters that lie inside a line drawn from Beachy Head, and extending to Selsey Bill as being, the Bay of Sussex. Let it be known, the people of Sussex will undertake responsibility for the general well being of our neighbours. Let it be known the people of Sussex shall be guardians of our wildlife. Let it be known the people of Sussex will, through custom support all local business. Finally, let it be known, as guardians of Sussex, we all know Sussex is Sussex … and Sussex won’t be druv! Copthorne’s Millie Giving Sport Her Best Shot One talented Copthorne teenager is giving sport her best shot as she competes in high-level athletic competitions across Britain in the shot put. In February, she secured her most memorable victory yet with a table-topping gold-medal finish in the English Under-15 Indoor Championships in Sheffield.
M
illie Noyce, 14, a student at Imberhorne School in East Grinstead is proving to be a sharp shooter and boasts a golden shot which is winning her dozens of plaudits in the sporting world. Millie’s sporting journey began when she visited an athletics open day at Crawley K2 Leisure Centre where on offer were a series of different athletic events including running and throwing disciplines. As Millie explains, the lack of other open day attendees showing an interest in shot putting meant she thought she would give it a go and from there she found a flare for the sport and enjoyed it. Millie said: “There weren’t many shot putters for the event, I really enjoyed it and threw well. I started training at K2 before joining a specialised throwing group called Elite Throws Academy.” Her coach is Judy Oakes, a former star shot putter whose own athletics career saw her represent Great Britain and England, with her winning six Commonwealth Games medals including three gold. Under Judy’s watchful eye Millie has gone from success
By Jacob White
to success and earlier this year beat her previous personal best with a throw of 12.47m to become the English Under 15 Indoor Champion. Speaking about her golden championships in South Yorkshire, Millie said: “I really enjoyed the competition in Sheffield, I was competing against girls from around the country. I was competing against the girl who was number one in the country and this motivated me to throw further.” The shot put is an Olympic sport which dates back to the Olympic movement’s earliest origins in Ancient Greece - all about strength, co-ordination, timing and athleticism. Millie in
the past year has already taken Crawley Athletics Club, Sussex League and regional titles before her national success. As well as shot put which requires training three to four times a week Millie plays netball for her school meaning Millie has to draw on her organisational skills to find balance in her sport and social life, she says: “It can be tough fitting in homework and training but I manage it as I am organised.” Under the guidance of her highly experienced coach Judy Oakes, might the Olympic games beckon in Tokyo in 2020 or Los Angeles or Paris in 2024 for Millie? Millie says: “My plans for the future are to carry on training hard and see what happens. Olympics? Who knows, we will see.” Millie’s sporting success to date has been achieved so far through hard work and dedication and that is her message to any girl wanting to throw in her footsteps. “My advice to anyone else would be train hard and just give it all you can, don’t be too hard on yourself, I can be sometimes well that’s what my parents tell me!” Millie says.

Take To The Skies At
British Airways i360 A visit to British Airways i360 in Brighton, the world’s first vertical cable car, is a unique experience for the whole family to enjoy By Jacob White
B
righton’s newest seaside attraction, British Airways i360, made a big impact when it opened in August last year. The futuristic glass observation pod, which rises to 138m, dominates the city’s skyline and has already wowed thousands of visitors. Every 30 minutes, up to 200 people gently glide up to 450ft in the giant glass pod to enjoy 360 degree unfolding views across Brighton, the south coast and, on the clearest days, all the way to Beachy Head and the Isle of Wight.
Conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye, British Airways i360 is acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the world’s most slender tower. Driven by state-of-the-art cable car technology, the design is as impressive as it is innovative. The idea was born in 2005 to create a ‘vertical pier’ on Brighton seafront, located on the site of the original West Pier. Guests can ‘walk on air’ and gain a unique perspective on the city from above, just as the original pier welcomed Victorian society to ‘walk on water’.
It took 10 years and the expertise of hundreds of people across Europe to turn British Airways i360 from a concept into reality. This summer it is ready to welcome you and your family to see the coast from a seagull’s view. Following your flight you can visit the onsite gift shop, grab a bite to eat in the restaurant or walk straight out onto the beach for a paddle in the sea. Rain or shine, British Airways i360 will never fail to lift your spirits.
Competition Time! We’ve teamed up with British Airways i360 to offer you the chance to WIN tickets for flights at the landmark attraction so you and a friend can take to the skies. To enter visit our website www.rhuncovered.co.uk
Family Fun Children absolutely love the British Airways i360 pod. Families are free to walk around, pointing out landmarks, watching seagulls and spotting boats out at sea. Before boarding the pod, tech-savy children can enjoy animations and a photo hunt around the site on the free-to-download British Airways i360 app. Sky High Refreshments On board the pod, enjoy a drink at the Nyetimber Sky Bar, one of the most unique bars in the UK, serving a range of fine drinks from Sussex including Nyetimber, an award winning sparkling wine. If you are seeking the romantic touch, take an evening flight to enjoy the sunset and twinkling city lights below.
Wine and Dine Visitors can relax over a delicious meal in the stylish restaurant which boasts stunning views from its beachside terrace. Serving dishes created using locally-sourced ingredients, the menus are inspired by the seasons. The modern bistro is ideal for families and has a wide variety of options for adults and children alike. Alternatively, you can enjoy a classic afternoon tea served with finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of mini patisseries. If you are looking for something a little more informal, do not worry - If you are looking for a light bite, head to the West Pier Tea Room for coffee and cake.

Volunteering For School Leavers
Getting a first job or securing that college or university place can often come down to added extras on a CV, one big plus is voluntary work - here is our guide to getting started. By Shelley Welti How Can Volunteering Help? Whether you are heading off to college or university, or hoping to step onto the career ladder, one sure-fire way of getting noticed is by volunteering. In fact, according to a Time Bank/ Reed survey 73% of the UK’s biggest businesses would employ a candidate with volunteering experience instead of one without. The study also found that 94% of businesses surveyed believe that volunteering adds to skills and 58% say that voluntary work experience can often be more valuable than experience gained in paid employment. So, volunteering is certainly not to be sniffed at – especially if you want your CV to stand out from the crowd.
As well as looking fantastic on your application form, a volunteer placement is not just something to do to impress future employers or further education institutions – it can offer you a window into the world you would ideally like to work in and ensure that it is for you. This can bring you confidence and also contacts too - we all know how true the saying ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ can be.
Be realistic though; if expenses are not paid which with most placements they will not be, think about not travelling too far, due to cost. Large organisations attract a lot of interest and will book up months in advance, so it’s best to get in there early. It is also worth noting that many companies cannot take on placements for those aged 18 or younger due to insurance reasons. If you are open to doing something a bit different and would like to add a varied range of skills to your CV, the world is your oyster!
Finding The Perfect Placement You have decided to volunteer, now where do you start to look for placements? If you are hoping to volunteer in the industry you would like to work in, research a few companies you feel would be a good fit for your career.
Websites such as www.do-it.org are great places to look for placements, as are local community and volunteering centres.

Conditioning Your Hair For Summer
The summer sun and heat can take it out of our hair - now more than ever conditioning is important to keep tresses looking and feeling great! By Shelley Welti
H
ere are our favourite homemade recipes to keep your hair looking HOT and frazzle-free. Mediterranean Moisture We all know that the healthy Mediterranean diet and olive oil go hand-in-hand, so it is time to take inspiration from the strong locks, and diets of the Italians, Spanish and Greeks and treat our hair to an olive oil treatment. Warm up 125ml of olive oil and drench your tresses with it. Then cover with a plastic bag, wrap in a towel and relax for 45 minutes. Simply shampoo and rinse out to reveal revived and happy hair!
and apply to wet hair for a moisture-rich treatment that will have your hair back to its bouncy best before breakfast. After 20 minutes, wash off and style as normal. Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, this trusty avocado treatment should be used once a week to restore a healthy shine to stressed-out tresses.
Bananas for a Banana Mask Reach for the fruit bowl and instead of tucking into a banana, mash it up with a tablespoon of olive oil until it resembles a puree to create a hair mask that will not only smell fruity but leave your locks feeling juicy too! Massage into dry hair and leave for at least thirty minutes. Rinse thoroughly, shampoo and style as normal.
Oil Rich Avocado Mask The superfood of the moment – is there nothing the humble avocado cannot do? Instead of mashing it up for your toast, mix with an egg

An Egg-cellent Moisture Treatment Our locks need protein to be healthy, so this egg-cellent DIY egg treatment will certainly help to make tired tresses feel fabulous again. Simply mix two egg yolks with two teaspoons of vegetable oil and two teaspoons of water and massage into your hair after shampooing. Leave for 30 minutes then rinse out with cool water for hair that feels shiny and strong!

The Dangers Of Log Book Delays According to a BBC investigation, buyers of nearly new cars are being affected by some dealers keeping hold of the log book for a period of time after the vehicle has been sold. By Ben Morley
A
ccording to the investigation, log book delays can cause a problem when it comes to getting tax, sorting out parking permits and even speeding fines being sent to the wrong address - although, I do not see what the problem is with that, to be honest! The problem arises where dealers are incentivised to sell excess stock of pre-registered cars at a discounted price. The caveat being that the effectively brand-new cars with delivery mileage on the speedo, are supposed to be kept off the road for 90 days after being registered before being sold. However, dealers are selling the cars on to new buyers almost straight away, while remaining registered at a different address. The new buyers are told that the car will
be registered in their name in due course - approximately 90 days, it would seem. Obviously, there is a grey area with the log book because it clearly states that it indicates who the keeper of the vehicle is, not the owner, but it seems it still can cause an issue with things like taxing the car as it remains registered as off the road by the dealer. Further difficulties can arise when it comes to insuring the vehicle, as most will require you to disclose the details of both the owner and the keeper. Failure to do so were you to have an accident in the car, could result in red faces all round. You can be fairly sure that the insurance company will not pay out if they can find a way of avoiding it. Grey areas and small print being top of their wriggling out of paying list!

The moral of the story is, if you are buying a nearly new car, make sure that the dealer has fulfilled their obligation to keep it off of the road for the correct amount of time. Use a bit of common sense and if you are buying a nearly new car do not walk out of the dealership until the log book has been transferred into your name. It can be done online in a matter of minutes, simple really!

HOMES
Changing Seasons – Here Comes The Sun! Thinking of accessorising for summer? The warmth of summer is here, so now is the time to add some summery ideas to your interior designing to make sure you change with the seasons! By Jacob White
J
une sees the longest day, the beginning of the Wimbledon Championships and Glastonbury Festival – all sure fire signs that the height of the British summer is here and we have a listed of the top 10 ways for you to get your home buzzing to the sights, scents and colours of the summer vibe of 2017! Pare Down Why not think of your home as a holiday apartment and see it in a new light? Get rid of pieces of furniture and fabrics which are dark or gloomy and stow away those heavy accessories, save the throws for autumn and winter!
Garden Fresh Bring the outdoors in! Freshly picked flowers can do marvels to a home – it is always best to go for arrangements that feature warm colours such as bold oranges and vibrant pinks – save reds and purples for the winter months!
Live Natural Add some organic appeal to your home! Why not consider introducing plants into the home? Some plants will require little care and they will be the perfect addition to a summery table or side unit display – natural equals character!
Furniture Update An effective way to bring new life to old furniture and add a splash of colour is to give a tired chair or table a new life with some summery hues! Make sure you properly prime the furniture before adding tones such as sky blue and grassy green.
Dine Colourfully Meal time is another chance for you to add a splash of colour to your – mix in some bright floral or tropical themes which will ramp-up your summertime look! A great idea is to set-up a small table to create an impromptu bar with bottles.
Swap Art If you have a dark wall or two in your home why not add some colourful art pieces? The art does not have to be expensive with affordable pieces available online or from a local charity shop. One large or several small pieces can do the trick!
New View A fireplace is great focal point during the winter months but why not considering moving your furniture away during summer? Rather than huddling around a source of winter warmth shift the focus to a window or French doors!
Emotional Fabric The colours we choose can instantly lift a room’s mood and in turn yours and that of your house guests. Try bright, botanical prints for 2017 on bedding. Let the patterns shine but make sure to keep the wall colours neutral.
Summer Scents If you like to have a fresh scent running through your home – whether you use candles, infuser sticks or plug-ins make sure you change with the seasons! Evergreen is good for winter but summer should be about ocean breeze!
Go Casual The summer offers opportunities to find unexpected uses for formal serving piece. Mix things up a little and be original, why not try these ideas – a silver try for holding your glassware or plant your herb garden in a champagne bucket!

25 Years Of Blinding Customer Service! 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Interior Blinds UK. The Crawley Down made to measure blind manufacturing and fitting company was founded in 1992 by Andrew Pike, from humble beginnings, in his parent’s garage. Andrew had been making blinds for a number of years before being made redundant – on redundancy he decided to put his experience into action and give running his own business a go. Initially specialising in making vertical blinds, as the business order book grew, Andrew moved his business to its first premises in Shipley Bridge Farm, and here, he moved on to making roller blinds. Now, 25 years later he manufactures all but specialist Roman blinds onsite in his Crawley Down factory and showroom facility, and offers bespoke blinds to each customer’s needs.
“Interior Blinds UK is a family business – in the early days, Andrew and his mother would work on the blind fabric and father Brian would collect supplies – including trips as far afield as Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.”

How does Andrew differ to other blind manufacturers and installers? • Interior Blinds UK offers a full and comprehensive package. They provide a start-to-finish service to customers which all too often other blind companies simply cannot, or are not willing to offer. • Interior Blinds UK offers specialist blinds which are made to measure around almost any window shape and their assortment on offer includes top-of-the-range motorised blinds. • Despite two recessions, Andrew continues to build up the business and throughout the time in business he has proved resourceful.

“The beauty here is we see the customer throughout the process, we hear their thoughts. We get to know them and their requirements and as a result we can offer them what they really want. The aim of Interior Blinds UK is to advise the customer of the best possible option and outcome.”
“There is no job too big, nor, too small! The local element is critical to the operations of Interior Blinds UK – amendments or replacement components can be sourced much quicker than with national blind companies. If you like, you can even visit the business to watch your blinds being made in Sussex.”
Interior Blinds UK is accredited for manufacturing and installing child-safe blinds with the British Blind and Shutter Association.

Window Film vs Window Blinds
Summer is here, and with the temperatures rising, conservatories can become unbearably hot, many find them just too uncomfortable to relax in. If you want to enjoy the sun but not the heat, contact Solar Screen! The company install a solar reflective fi lm to the roof and elevation windows reducing the heat and glare allowing use of your conservatory all year round. Window fi lms also protect you and your furnishings from damage from the sun’s harmful UV rays, reducing UV levels to 1% or less. ASK THE EXPERT: Kevin Walker Question: I had a conservatory installed two years-ago and haven’t been able to use it comfortably as it has been too hot in the summer. I also have soft furnishings which I am worried might fade, what is your advice? Answer: The primary culprit is Ultra Violet (UV) rays. You can’t see these rays but they are at work even on cloudy days but there is a simple way to control these UV rays which account for 40% of fading causes. In fact, it is being used by major museums around the world to help protect priceless works of art. It’s called solar control film or window film, a high-quality film professionally installed to the inside surface of your windows which will stop up to 99% of the harmful UV rays, while still providing a natural level of visible light. As well as UV rays, do keep 25% 25% in mind the other Solar Visible Heat causes, 25% is Light visible light, solar 10% Other heat represents 40% 25% and 10% UV Light is attributed to other factors.

Question: I have an older property, what benefits will a safety film bring to my windows? Answer: In older properties, a safety film will bring the glazing up to modern standards without having to change the glass. “I am just so thrilled with the solar screen treatment of our conservatory roof. The temperature inside, even on very warm days is so much more pleasant and now we can spend our days quite comfortably in a room we use constantly.” Joan Amos “The fi lm that you have applied to our conservatory roof has made such a difference. You can literally feel the difference as you stand in the room. We couldn’t use our conservatory when the sun was out, as even in the winter it could get too hot. We have now used it so much more since your work was completed.” N Hayward

GARDENS
Water Great Idea!
Water adds another dimension to any garden – the sight and sound of running water can lift and relax us no matter how stressful our day has been. The additional sound and light a water feature offers can bring a garden to life. Here are simple ideas to ensure your water feature is at is best. By Jacob White
T
he design of your water feature is important – it must be something that you can live with and be within your budget. The water feature does not have to include sculptures or fussy glitz – a simple, informal wildlife pool can still be stunning as an attractive addition as well as a learning resource. If you decide a pond is for you then here are some tip tops to make sure it works for you: Pond Life To ensure your new garden pond does not leak away use a good-quality liner such as a EPDM
(Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) liner which is at least 1mm thick. It is recommended that you lay the liner across an underlay. Find Balance A good pH balance with no algal outbreaks is essential, to achieve this the pond needs to be ideally an area of 30m3 with a depth of around 1.5m in place and try to cover around two-thirds of the water surface with floating plants. Three-quarters of the sides of the pond should be planted with plants such as flowering rush or marsh marigold and although a natural pond does not get cleaned
if you find your pond becomes sludgy use calcium sulphate to clean. Crystal Clear To keep a pond crystal clear you need to install a filtration system otherwise draining, cleaning and refilling is far too time-consuming. Self-cleaning drum filters which are either gravity-fed or pumped are a good choice for a pond novice. The drums must be installed outside of the pond – if you’re using the filter as part of an elaborate fountain it should be in keeping with it. If you are keeping fish it can be challenging to keep the water clear and you will need a more sophisticated filter.
