Crawley’s Polish Olympian And Wartime Hero Remembered Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Jerzy Braun, a man, an athlete and a soldier. His eventful and action-packed life took him from his native Poland to Olympic success in Los Angeles followed by heroic wartime fighting in Italy and Africa before spending his final years in Crawley – this month, RH History Uncovered looks back on his extraordinary life. By Jacob White

J

erzy Braun was born April 13 1911 in the Northern Polish city of Bydgoszcz - the city’s location on the Brda and Vistula rivers makes water sports a popular activity for local people. Whilst at secondary school Jerzy first took a serious interest in the sport which would one day see him propelled to Olympic success, he joined the Bydgostia Rowing Association in 1928 aged 17. Within the space of four years he was selected as a member of the Polish crew, he relocated to the Polish capital, Warsaw and was in training before heading to the Los Angeles Olympics of 1932. In those games he enjoyed a remarkable day – as part of the Polish boat in the coxed fours he won a bronze medal, just one hour later he was celebrating winning in the coxed pairs event. Seven years later the world was at war and as with so many lives and careers, Jerzy’s was turned upside down by the Second World War. He joined the military when Germany invaded Poland and found himself posted with the Polish Independent Carpathian Brigade. It fought with distinction in North Africa, most notably in the Siege of Tobruk. The unit was later reformed into the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division which would go on to fight in the Battle of Monte Cassino and Ancona. Jerzy’s achievements were recognised with the award of two Cross of Valour medals – the Polish military decoration is awarded to an

individual who ‘has demonstrated deeds of valour and courage on the field of battle’. At the conclusion of the war in 1945, few soldiers from Jerzy’s unit chose to return to the new, Communist Poland. Jerzy himself married Lili Dembowska – a female member of the Polish armed forces before moving to the UK in 1949. The Braun family first settled in London before relocating to Crawley in the 1950s, Jerzy passed away in 1968 at the age of 56, a month shy of his 57th birthday. In the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics, the British Polish community together with the Polish Embassy organised the unveiling of a new tomb for Jerzy at Snell Hatch Cemetery and a blessing ceremony attended by local dignitaries, Crawley’s then mayor, Cllr. Keith Blake at the time said: “He achieved an extraordinary amount during his life and it’s right for it to be remembered and for Crawley to be made aware.”

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome UK

(South East Surrey and Sussex Support Group) Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a rare disease with around 1 in 5,000 people diagnosed with one of the syndromes. Lights, Camera, Action! In Gossops Green A fi lm maker from West Sussex is the toast of the movie world having already showcased his work at the prestigious Cannes Festival but what inspired him to first pick up a pen and write a script and what is his advice for any budding Steven Spielberg wanting to following in his successful footsteps? By Jacob White

C

allum Andrew Johnston, 25, from Gossops Green did not start film writing until he was 16 and says he previously had little interest in writing scripts. At school, he did well in English classes and he was often praised by his teachers for his ‘exceptional descriptive skills’ and asked to read aloud his work. Looking back on his school days, he said: “I didn’t think much of it, as my attention span in school was limited due to constant day dreaming. I have always been creative-minded, so I struggled academically throughout school. I wasn’t aware of why I took an interest in film until recently.” Callum’s first screenplay was a film entitled RH11, at the time he was studying media studies and was learning how to structure a screenplay. As well as his studies, he was involved in the theatre

and wrote a play called RH11 which tackled the important and topical issue of the time, knife crime. Callum, who spent a short time studying at the New York Film Academy, although this was curtailed due to finances and family problems says that he is inspired to write because of his love of sharing a story with people who may save someone’s life or empower them to find peace and enlightenment. Undeterred by his brief period in the US, by 20, Callum had written and directed RH11 and Crossed Paths with his greatest success coming with the sequel to RH11, Little District which would go on to receive the accolade of premiering in the

South of France at the worldfamous Cannes Film Festival. Last year, The Forbidden Note premiered after four and a half years in production. The film touches on the sensitive subject of honour killings, a term itself which is challenged. During production, Callum worked with members of the Islamic community and the Home Office. Callum, said: “I have to thank many Crawley residents for their help and support. I would also like to thank Dave Watmore and Jackie Draper from the Hawth Theatre and thank Crawley Borough Council and MP Henry Smith for all their support over the last few years.” What is Callum’s advice for those budding film-makers in Sussex wanting to follow in his footsteps? He, said: “I would tell people to not follow in any of my steps... because they are their own person and the footprints they will leave will be important for their story or stories they tell here to people.’ “I would urge people to write from the heart, always. If they have a dream, it’s not too big for them. The only time a dream is too big is when they don’t apply action to their thoughts. If you want to write a story, write one. Have no regrets... the universe wants you to be where it needs you to be.”

COVER STORY

Go Wild!

Discover Wakehurst’s Wild Woods There promises to be a raft of amazing things to experience at Wakehurst’s Wild Wood Festival between Saturday, May 27 and Monday, May 29. This is a chance for the whole family to get out into the woods and immerse themselves in all the magic the woods have to offer. By Jacob White

W

Children will love lighting fires, taking part in hands-on crafts and letting off steam at Treetrunk Trek. They will also adore taking a close-up look at nature in the dropin photography workshop or making a mark on the woodland art wall. Tree climbing is always the most popular activity for the adventurous, run by fully-trained climbing experts with the relevant safety checked rope systems.

akehurst is home to a world-famous botanic garden and Millennium Seed Bank – one of the world’s largest seed conservation projects. As well as paying homage to flora and fauna, what you might not know is what lies just beyond - an incredible 500 acres of ancient managed woodland and the stunning Loder Valley Nature Reserve – waiting to be discovered and explored. This year’s Wild Wood Festival will be held in Pearceland Wood, which is only open for a few months a year to keep it free from damage and encourage natural growth to flourish. Here, you will be able to get hands-on as you nestle in a giant dormouse nest or burrow into a badger’s sett of coppiced hazel. You can also gather round a woodland kiln to see the sparks fly or, you can rest in the woodland shelter to eat from the outdoor oven.

Woodsmen will be at work making all sorts of interesting objects and a Wakehurst arborist will demonstrate the art of coppicing while explaining the lifecycle of the woodland in which they work. The importance of conservation is a serious theme running through each day and visitors hear what Kew is doing to protect woodlands all over the world, so future generations can enjoy them.

After all that full-on and super-charged high-octane activity there will be plenty of time to chill out and relax with tales of folklore from days and theatre. A picnic area, a pop-up woodland café and a campside barbeque will make sure everyone is well fed and watered and that nobody goes hungry on their visit to the woods.

A Wakehurst day admission ticket includes entry to the Wild Wood Festival. Normal garden admissions prices apply – Adults £12.50, Children (16 and under) free. Some activities incur extra cost (cash only). For more information, visit: www.kew.org/wildwood

What’s on at Wakehurst

Recovery from the Great Storm of 1987 In the year of the 30th anniversary of The Great Storm, Wakehurst is celebrating the incredible regeneration of its woodlands.

Secret Structures exhibition – inside the story of plants and fungi

On the night of the October 15/16 1987 winds gusting up to 115mph ravaged the South of England and the Wakehurst landscape was devastated with the loss of more than 20,000 trees.

(Held in the Atrium of the Millennium Seed Bank) Opened: April 7 Free

After replanting, Wakehurst is looking better than ever. This year their events, school holiday activities and guided walks all have a theme of encouraging visitors to learn more about the woods. In fact for Wakehurst the Great Storm could be seen as a blessing in disguise, it meant a virtual clean slate for their arborists and the start of phytogeographic planting in our woodlands. Trees were planted according to areas of the world that they are native to, meaning that the areas have been planted to respect geology and topography rather than political boundaries.

Every month, we talk to over one hundred thousand South of England households – Do you want to talk to them too? These days, the options for marketing your business are almost limitless. A few years ago, all most people did was chuck a listing in the Yellow Pages, join a local networking group and rely on word of mouth. In the 21st century, the landscape’s changed, a lot. New media’s come in, in a big way; and every few months there’s a new ‘shiny object’ that’s described as ‘the one thing that businesses must do’. At Mantra Magazines, we’ve got an alternative. Because, whilst Facebook and Google are important, every single month we can testify to the fact that print advertising is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving.

Over the last 10 years I’ve really built up a good rapport with RH Uncovered and I really trust what they do for me, so on that basis I really wouldn’t feel that I would go anywhere else Tim Burberry, Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating

They are very easy to talk to, nothing is ever too much trouble and they get things right, first time. There is no stress involved in dealing with them. They know what I want and return something that is pretty much perfect Greg Fergusson Fergussons Auto Services,

Every single year since we started out, our business has grown; and there’s a simple reason for that: businesses want to reach out to their prospects in a way that’s genuine, trustworthy and builds relationships. The fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more difficult to do that online, when your prospect doesn’t get to retain your message, dwell on it and decide whether it’s for them or not. For strong, long-lasting and profitable relationships with your target market, print advertising is still where it’s at, and given that advertising with our magazines can give you access to over 100,000 homes, that’s no surprise. Call us today on 01342 718348 for more details on how we can help you.

Summer Skin Care Essentials Summer is a time to get outdoors and enjoy the sun but remember there are things to keep in mind when it comes to your skin – the hot and humid days can take their toll if you do not take extra care. By Jacob White

H

ere are some skin care essential tips to keep in mind this summer to help keep you safe in the sun. If you like to bronze, remember to let it happen gradually over a series of days. Exposing yourself to intense sun for long periods for the sake of getting a quick tan can have serious effects on your skin, not to mention the risk of sunburn and sunstroke. Use a sun tan lotion with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30 to protect your skin. Drink Water! At least eight glasses of water-a-day is recommended. Carry a bottle

Horticulture Unites Over Melanoma

For green-fingered readers, Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh are just two of the TV gardeners supporting the Watch Your Back! campaign devised by the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund. The initiative is partnered by the Garden Centre Association, the Professional Gardeners Guild and The National Allotment Society and supported by more than 150 garden centres across the UK.

Men and Melanoma

of water with you and drink from it regularly throughout the day, by doing so you will help prevent dehydration, wash out toxins from your body and ensure you are at your hydrated best! Insect repellents are a must if you are planning to travel abroad this summer but even at home on sultry days the heat brings mosquitoes and many other biting insects!

Stay feeling fresh and cool by taking a misting bottle of water with you, whether going to work, to the beach or shopping, use to give your face and body a freshening cool off. Exfoliation is a good idea in summer as dead cells clog up your pores and can cause spots. Use a scrub which will not dry your skin too much. Don’t forget your feet! They are on show now more than any other time of the year, use a foot scrub. Massage this into your feet and legs in a gentle upward motion to exfoliate dry skin before applying moisturiser. Apply body oil on heels at night, then pop on some cotton socks and leave on overnight.

Raising Awareness

Melanoma rates in the UK have more than quadrupled in the past 30 years, however many of us still don’t understand the need, or have the motivation to use sun protection regularly or check skin for signs of change and danger signs.

Protect: Wear SPF30 sunscreen, sleeves, a hat and seek shade between 11.00am and 3.00pm Detect: Regularly check skin for changes and know what to look out for The Watch Your Back! campaign Prevent: Melanoma and is raising awareness by promoting other skin cancers but enjoy the following simple advice: your time outside

I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.

We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos

Park Life!

With the warmer, brighter, longer days here, now is the time to get out and enjoy your local park and the wide open green spaces! We have got top tips and ideas for you to make the most of your park life! By Jacob White

A

re you tired of seeing your children glued to the sofa playing video games and watching online cat videos when it is such a beautiful day outside? It is time to get them up and outside for some real-life fun!

22

Even if your budget is tight, you can find lots of adventures to be had at a park! Take advantage of your nearest recreational area and plan an outing for the entire family no matter how old or young.

Old Favourites

Play Ball

Do A Runner

As well as swings try your hand at rope nets, see-saws, giant slides and monkey bars! These are just some of the wonders packed into park play areas – so head off to the park and pack plenty of agility.

Many community parks have tennis courts and football fields – they often offer local leagues for organised sports but if it’s an open field take along a ball and have a good old fashioned kick-about.

Whether putting your best foot forward solo or as part of an organised event like Park Run put your running shoes on - before doing a Mo Farrah, check the park website for any do’s and don’ts.

Top Tip

Top Tip

Top Tip

As well as agility pack some drinks to ensure you and your little ones remain refreshed in the sun.

You might think of yourself as a Wayne Rooney but be careful where you take aim with your balls!

Remember to run on areas of the park you are advised to use and following park running rules.

Picnic In The Park

Learn About Nature

Play With The Dog

Looking for a lazy feast? Nothing quite beats eating al fresco! Grab a basket and a blanket and some hearty food and drink to enjoy whilst in the sun – don’t forget to take some extra feed for the ducks!

Local parks teem with wildlife so they are a great place to learn about plants and animals on your doorstep – remember your camera so you can photo anything weird or wonderful for a scrapbook!

Parks are a place where your canine family member can enjoy an outing with you – taking your dog to the park can be a great place as you can all bond as a family and your furry friend can exercise!

Top Tip

Top Tip

If you are dinning in the middle of the day make sure you take some sun cream to protect your skin!

If you want to make a scrapbook be mindful of the nature and treat plants and animals respectfully.

Be sure to know your park’s rule for four-legged visitors – take a lead and bags for any toilet stops.

TRAVEL

Wonders of the World Uncovered Wonders of the World lists are often debated and can include natural spectacles or man-made achievements. Of course, there are a million and more amazing sights to see in the world but here is a list of my favourites for wow-factor and of course, accessibility, easily visited independently, or as part of a tour group. By Beverley Neal As the only surviving site of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, we must begin our list with the Great Pyramid of Giza. The ancient sites in Egypt are so well preserved it is like they were built yesterday and with passionate and knowledgeable guides you cannot help but fall in love with the tales and legends. Climbing into the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid is one of my ultimate travel experiences, and it is still utterly incomprehensible that those structures are almost 4,000-years-old. An icon of India and the world’s most impressive dedication to love, it is hard to describe how beautiful the Taj Mahal is. The views of the monument from afar are breath-taking but close-up the Taj cannot fail to amaze with thousands of individually carved inlays set into the marble, taking the most highly skilled artisans of the day 17 years to perfect.

Walking along the Great Wall of China offers the most spectacular views as the wall snakes along the rugged mountain tops disappearing into the horizon. The wall stretches for more than 13,000 miles, but the sections around Beijing are the most visited and allow you to explore the many watch towers, walk along the steeper sections and admire the size of this unbelievable structure which at some sections is more than 25ft high.

The actual iconic shaped Angkor Wat in Cambodia is just one temple in this vast complex which covers a whopping 500 acres and is the largest Hindu temple in the world. Built in the 12th century, it features fascinating carvings, frozen stories of daily life and politics of the time. Your mind starts to play detective as to how was it built and why did the inhabitants of this once mighty city leave, perfect for the amateur historian! Victoria Falls has to be my favourite natural sight. The Victorian explorer, David Livingstone described Victoria Falls as ‘scenes so lovely they must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight’, and he was not wrong. The best way to view the mighty Smoke that Thunders, as the locals call it is from above, and a helicopter or microlight trip over the falls is highly recommended. If that’s not adventurous enough for you, try visiting during the low season (Sep-Dec) when you can sit right on the edge of the falls in the Devil’s Pool. Where Next? I still dream of going to Peru’s Machu Picchu, Jordan’s Petra and Bagan in Myanmar as well as seeing so many natural sights like South America’s Amazon River and the Angel Falls, Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania and cruising the polar regions. The great thing is these places are becoming more accessible, and conservation driven by tourism is helping to preserve them in the right way. I am a big advocate for touring holidays and have spent much of my career working in the touring sector. Whether you want to see a destination as part of a group or set out independently, please get in touch now, and we can start your very own travel wish list.

s the weather hopefully gets warmer and the days longer into May, it’s a chance to make the most of our natural environment. It’s a subject that’s important to me and many others across Crawley. With this in mind I was delighted to host the Greener UK coalition of environmental organisations - from the National Trust to Sussex Wildlife Trust in the House of Commons earlier this year. We discussed how the UK’s EU exit is an opportunity to restore and enhance our

natural surroundings, and I’m delighted that this cause now has the backing of more than 200 MPs from across the House of Commons. All of us can enjoy the wildlife available on our doorstep here in Crawley. In February, the RSPB led a birdwatch in Worth Park to the north east of town and to our south west is the beautiful Buchan Country Park with new walking trails. Whether in Crawley or working in Parliament, I will continue to work to ensure an improved environment for all creatures - ourselves included!

COMMUNITY

YMCA East Surrey Short Breaks

Following the success of its play schemes last summer, one local charity is planning a series of short breaks again this summer.

Y

By Jacob White

MCA East Surrey started running their short breaks play schemes for children and young people with disabilities in Crawley in summer 2016. The scheme has been a huge success with 32 children and young people enjoying a range of activities, including science experiments, creative play and outings to the K2 Leisure Centre and Tilgate Park in the town. The holiday clubs, funded

by West Sussex Council, will continue to run during school holidays and the service has also been extended include Thursday evening and Saturday activity clubs for young people aged 12-18 with disabilities. The clubs run trips into the community, allowing young people to develop new skills and experience a range of activities. Trips include theatre visits, bowling, swimming, karting and visits to Crawley Town Football Club.

During these trips, young people are supported by YMCA’s qualified and experienced staff and encouraged to develop and use everyday skills, such as asking and paying for items, to develop their independence. The scheme relies on volunteers to keep running. Full training is given and there are plenty of development opportunities and you get to enjoy great days out helping to make a difference.

If you are interested in volunteering with YMCA East Surrey, visit: www.ymcaeastsurrey.org.uk

YMCA East Surrey Sleep Easy

On Saturday, March 4, 44 people slept rough for one night at YMCA East Surrey’s Sports and Community Centre in Redhill to help raise the profi le of youth homelessness for the charity’s fifth Sleep Easy event.

Lee Fabry, YMCA East Surrey’s Head of Housing at Hillbrook House in Redhill, said: “The aim of this event is to bring the community together and get the message across that homelessness is still an issue which needs to be addressed, even in Surrey’ “Last year, 88 young people at risk of homelessness found a place to stay at Hillbrook House. Our supported Move-on project in Lynwood Road is giving even more young people a stepping stone towards independent living and the NextStep housing service is just about to secure private rented accommodation for their 800th family” Lee added Joining the group to sleep out under the stars were the Mayor and Mayoress of Reigate and Banstead, Cllr David Powell and Mrs Caroline Durrance.

“As an ex-soldier, I’m used to roughing it,” said the Mayor, aged 81, who took part in the event for the second year running.

Staff, residents, volunteers, local councillors, Reigate College students, friends and supporters made up the group and so far, more than £10,000 has been raised. Top fundraiser for the night was local handyman, Rich Michalowski, with a sponsorship total of £3,100. Rich says: “We were very lucky, it stayed dry, after packing up our cardboard boxes in the morning the heavens opened!”

MOTORING

Keep Your Cool!

Have you ever wondered what the words cabin fi lter or pollen fi lter mean when you spot them on an invoice after your vehicle has been to a garage and been serviced? By Ben Morley

T

he cabin filter or pollen filter has a lot of work to do, and it is there to protect you from the fumes, dust, dirt and general nastiness that is in the air as you travel. If this filter is not regularly changed, it affects the performance of your air-conditioning system and heater. It does not stop there, you can get your air-conditioning system serviced for want of a better word. This usually involves an anti-bacterial cleaner being run through the car’s heater system to kill off any nasties that might cause bad smells when you switch it on.

30

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

The reality of this job is that your heater system will be set to re-circulate and an aerosol spray is let off in the car with the doors shut (no one is in the car). This circulates for several minutes and does the job. It makes sense to change the pollen filter at this time as well. On the mechanical side of the air-conditioning, the refrigerant will be recharged to required levels, the oil in the air-conditioning system will be topped up, a thorough check for leaks and any moisture or air that has found its way into the system will also be removed.

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

On average an airconditioning system will lose about 10% of its refrigerant every year. So if you use it a lot, it’s something that is worth getting checked regularly. Air-conditioning is helpful to drivers all-year-round, not just in the summer months to keep things inside the car cool. In case you did not know, nothing will clear moisture inside of your windscreen quicker in the morning than switching the airconditioning on.

PET CARE

Exercise Tips For Dogs Think just walkies or a game of fetch will keep your dog happy and healthy? Think again – there are plenty more ‘pawfect’ ways that will help your fourlegged friend stay fit, in shape and disciplined. Who knows - you could find yourself getting fitter too! By Shelley Welti Set up an obstacle course An obstacle course can keep your pup’s body and mind in tiptop shape, and they are easy to set up in your garden! Use cones, or plastic bottles for weaving in and out of, wooden planks, popup tunnels and even the kids’ slide for a fun agility course guaranteed to get them – and you – panting. Go for a run Running is not only good for us humans but our dogs too. Running – at a steady pace, increases your dog’s stamina and

strengthens their muscles, leaving them fitter in the long term. Pound the pavements of your usual evening walks or let your dog run free on your weekend walks. Just don’t run too fast for dogs with little legs; you don’t want to tire them too quickly or cause them to pull any muscles. Sniff and search Another game that you can easily set up in your garden! Hide treats and your dog’s favourite toys in difficult-to-find places in your garden and encourage

them to sniff them out and bring them to you, quickly. This can be played throughout your home on days when walkies due to the temperamental British weather isn’t an option! Puppy play We all know that dogs love to socialise and it isa natural way for them to keep fit. Next time you plan to meet up with fellow dog walkers, let your dog enjoy running, rolling and playing with other dogs to burn calories and build their social skills!

GARDENS

Open Your Garden For Charity

Are you green-fingered? Do you enjoy doing your bit for a good cause? If your response is yes to both questions, have you thought about opening your garden for charity? It is simple and can be rewarding. This year marks the 90th birthday of the National Gardens Scheme so what better time to get involved? By Jacob White

T

he National Gardens Scheme has a rich and fascinating history, since 1927 it has raised more than £45 million for nursing and caring charities across the UK. Its origins stretch back to 1850s Liverpool and a merchant by the name of William Rathbone who employed a nurse to care for his wife at their home. After his wife’s death, Rathbone kept the nurse on to help the local poor and sick and he would go on to raise funds for the recruitment, training and employment of nurses to go into deprived areas of the city, based on this idea of local nursing district nursing spread across the country as a voluntary organisation. Following the death in 1926 of the organisation’s patron Queen Alexandra a council member came up with the idea of raising money for charity by asking people to open their gardens to visitors and asking for a small entry fee that would be donated – the next year the National Gardens Scheme was founded.

Open Your Garden

If you are wondering whether your garden is worth visiting ask yourself the following few questions – Is it interesting? Is it attractive? Is it well-maintained? Has it got ‘character’? Can you offer refreshments? Do you enjoy talking about your garden? Are you ready for an enjoyable and inspiring day? Many of the gardens part of the scheme are small back gardens that have been made special by hard work, skill and the love of gardening. How To Add Kerb Appeal To Your House First impressions count – you might be surprised to learn that it only takes a quick spruce up at the front of your house to add some serious kerb appeal. By Jacob White

A

ccording to property experts, it takes on average no more than eight seconds for potential buyers to decide whether or not they like a house. Whether you are selling or not, a tidy entrance, neat drive and rubbish-free front garden all help to make a good and welcoming first impression.

It is estimated that an attractive garden can add thousands to the selling price, while a neglected plot can knock money off. Make sure your front garden entices potential buyers and general visitors through the front door, rather than send them heading in the opposite direction.

Opening Doors A lick of paint can work wonders for your street cred. Strip off blistered and cracked paint and fill any cracks! A strong colour on the front door makes a real statement – current favourites include matt finishes in dark grey and dark aubergine. Let There Be Light! Front doors need light, for safety and for practical reasons – security lights activated as you approach are available in a variety of styles. Other lighting options include lanterns or a single statement light which can be fitted to a porch. Make Sure It Is No Façade A tidy façade is a welcoming one so repaint, re-point and render over ugly brickwork where necessary. Colours should be in keeping with the period of the house and other houses on the street – if you live in a conservation area keep this in mind! Your Window On The World If your windows are dirty that can scream that your property is uncared for, so ensure they are kept clean. Rotten window frames should be replaced in a design that suits the rest of the house – if painted make sure the colour complements the brick or stonework.

Driveway To Hell? It might appear to be simple advice but remove rubbish, sweep up leaves and tidy trees and border hedges. Touch up paths and the driveways where needed by cementing loose tiles and slabs and remove any weeds between slabs. Your Number Is Up! Again, simple but effective! Always make sure that your house number is clear – whether on the door, on a plaque, on a wall or on the garden gate your house number should be clearly visible for visitors from the roadside. Front Garden Accessories A house is ultimately a home and as a result there will be items constantly outdoors but some simple tricks make a world of different! Hide bins and recycling boxes neatly behind screens and pile fire wood in purpose-built log stores.

We don’t have any problems recommending the RH Uncovered magazine to other local businesses because we find it so successful! Interior Blinds UK Ltd are local manufacturers, suppliers and installers of made to measure bespoke blinds and are based in Crawley Down (RH10). They started advertising in our first RH Uncovered magazine soon after we launched in 2006. They have since increased their campaigns and now appear in three magazines, so we met with Brian and asked why they chose our RH Uncovered magazine to start their campaign all those years ago and how it has worked for them... “We were looking for a magazine that was going to be distributed locally. The beauty of using RH Uncovered really comes down to the fact in is going into local homes and distributed by the Royal Mail, and has articles as well as advertising inside it.

By advertising regularly and consistently, we find we get a very good return for the investment of the advert! We started off with using one of the magazines and now we use three of them on a regular basis so we get a large distribution throughout the whole of the local area.

We have built up this beautiful working relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. What we do find is that more often than not somebody will walk in clutching a copy of the RH Uncovered magazine, or once we have asked them how they have heard us we find out that they have seen our advert.
