Now Here’s A Funny Story! Anyone younger than 40 years of age will likely have little or no knowledge of what is known as the golden age of British music hall, whilst most readers of a certain age may well be familiar with Pretty Polly Perkins of Paddington Green and It’s a long way to Tipperary. By Rachel Whitlam
L
ingfield actor, musician and the show’s author, Mitch Feral, originally showcased Now Here’s A Funny Story! at The Club For Actors in Covent Garden in February - he is now bringing the show to West Hoathly Village Hall. Performing as his alter ego, Mr Tommy Parsons, along with actress and singer, Airlie Scott, the show is directed by Jan Hunt, who has previously appeared on The Good Old Days and received great acclaim for her lead role in The Life of Marie Lloyd. She also recently co-produced UK tours of Dinnerladies, Keeping up Appearances, Rising Damp and Birds of A Feather. What is known as the golden age of music hall was a popular form of entertainment that began in the 1850’s, having its heyday in the 1890’s before giving way to variety and dance halls from the 1920’s onwards. The BBC television show, The Good Old Days that aired throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, endeavoured to bring the music hall days back to life. The aims of Now Here’s A Funny Story! is to recapture some of the spirit of music hall for those who are familiar and to offer
an introduction to a younger generation, with an aim to open up this slice of cultural history to schools, clubs, provincial touring theatres and community centres. Whilst it is not possible to cover the whole vast array of artistes who performed in the music halls, the entertainers do hope to offer a tantalising outline and give a broad historical context for a cultural phenomenon that spanned the same decades as the first industrial and technological revolutions, the triumph of universal suffrage for ordinary men and women as well as the sacrifices of the First World War.
The songs and artistes very much reflected the era that they were in and, what originally started out as a form of cheap entertainment for the working classes, was eventually adopted by the upper classes, who tried to cash in on the popular entertainment with the likes of Champagne Charlie. There will be the opportunity to join in a sing-along with classics such as The Man Who Broke The Bank At Monte Carlo, Goodbye Dolly and Don’t Dilly Dally On The Way. Author Mitch Feral has written a number of stage works including the musicals, Barnstormers, Street Cries in 2013 and in 2010, he won the offcut short play award for Sweet Engineering Of The Lucid Mind. Actress and singer Airlie Scott is a regular on the jazz circuit, appearing in London’s West End and New York’s Broadway and has also appeared as Theresa May in Brexit the Musical. This is a wonderful opportunity to glimpse an overview of the history of music hall with some highly professional performers to entertain you, without having to catch the train to London.
Now Here’s A Funny Story! is performed at West Hoathly Village Hall, North Lane, West Hoathly RH19 4QG. Tickets cost £10.00 or £8.00 for concessions, the organiser of a group of 10 receives a free ticket.

The Many Themes Of East Grinstead’s High Street Floral Display A lot of thought has gone into this year’s impressive floral display in East Grinstead High Street. Town Gardener, Jenny Watson has been inspired by many different themes that relate to the town, and after months of careful planning, the beds are unveiled to the public.
T
he first bed represents Fairtrade, with plants that remind us of tea, coffee, sugar, bananas and pineapple. Canna Lilies have been used for bananas and grass for sugar cane. Bed Two is inspired by the Myfanwy Townsend Charity that is run by East Grinstead resident, Harry Townsend, in memory of his wife. The charity raises awareness of Melanoma, a type of skin cancer. This bed displays a large sun surrounded by dark planting, showing the importance of using protection and sheltering in the shade. The third bed shows the link with East Grinstead as a dementia-friendly town and has been filled with blue flowers, as in the ‘Forget-me-not’ flower logo. The blue is a strong dark shade at one end, gradually fading to a pale blue at the other, this representing the gradual fading of memories and loss of connections. Bed Four celebrates 100 years of the PDSA, the connection to East Grinstead is

a pigeon known as Kenley Lass, who was the first pigeon to be dropped behind enemy lines in France. Typically, these birds were used where radio signals were weak. After the war, she was awarded the Dickin Medal, also known as the Animal Victorian Cross - the medal was named after Monica Dickin, the founder of the PDSA. The final bed represents votes for women and the town’s links to the anti-suffrage movement. While most people have heard of the women’s suffrage
movement that was founded by Emmeline Pankhurst, it is somewhat surprising to realise that there was a considerable amount of objection to the whole concept from other women! A local branch of the anti-suffrage movement was started by a notable local – Lady Musgrave. This bed will represent both sides of the argument and a number of cartoons from the period, reproduced along with the suffragette colours of purple, green and white. Why not take a trip to the high street to appreciate the hard work and thought put into this impressive display? You can read more details about the beds on a sign that is in bed five, positioned beside the high street bus stop, close to the war memorial.

Can You Help Find A New Home For Barebones Theatre? The Barebones Theatre Project is looking for a new home for their growing and ever-changing collection of actors, artists, designers and musicians who live in and around Forest Row. By Rachel Whitlam
D
irector Naomi Wirthner is passionate about what she does, as are her enthusiastic team of Gary Wright, Jeannie Joubert and Charlotte Harvey, and supporting actors, some who have been involved since 2010. There is more than a bit of a buzz around this group - after watching a performance in a yurt on a December night in Forest Row, I left feeling I had witnessed more than at many West End shows I have seen. It was the Anthony Neilson play, The Night before Christmas, a dark take on Christmas that prompted more questions than it answered. Sitting up close and personal with the actors made it an edgy performance. Barebones first production; Happened was performed in the cellar of the local pet food store in 2010, in another show remnants of grain were swept to create a derelict farmhouse for a performance of African Gothic by Reza de Wet. Since, spaces have been set up anywhere and everywhere, from a yurt to a converted dairy; rarely do they perform in conventional theatre spaces. Currently, they rehearse and perform at Springhill Farm in Forest Row, by kind permission of the Douch family. Naomi’s process is actor based, her question when in the rehearsal room, is, ‘how do we keep the performance living
10
www.rhuncovered.co.uk
when we open our doors to our audience?’ As an actor, directing for Barebones Theatre Project has given her the chance to explore performing. With limited time and money, actors have been encouraged to become as emotionally naked as possible. The actors have grown in number from in and around Forest Row, but also they have been able to host performances by well-known actors and directors. Recently, a Donmar Warehouse production of Faith Healer featured stage and film actors Stephen Dillane, Ron Cook and Gina McKee. All the three actors relished the experience of their
relationship with the audience becoming not only intimate but also interactive. Barebones now need their own space where they can rehearse, create, host and perform. Currently, at the farm or yurt, the audiences are around 60 but to become self-sufficient, the company would like to double this. Their next exciting venture is a community play, from which they have requested funding from Wealden Council. They look forward to seeing you at their next production, and if you have a space to convert, either to lease or buy do get in contact with them!
You can become involved and support the company by joining as a member, which will also entitle you to advance notification of up-coming events and ticket sales, visit: www.barebonesproject.co.uk

Take To The Skies At
British Airways i360 A visit to British Airways i360 in Brighton, the world’s first vertical cable car, is a unique experience for the whole family to enjoy By Jacob White
B
righton’s newest seaside attraction, British Airways i360, made a big impact when it opened in August last year. The futuristic glass observation pod, which rises to 138m, dominates the city’s skyline and has already wowed thousands of visitors. Every 30 minutes, up to 200 people gently glide up to 450ft in the giant glass pod to enjoy 360 degree unfolding views across Brighton, the south coast and, on the clearest days, all the way to Beachy Head and the Isle of Wight.
Conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye, British Airways i360 is acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the world’s most slender tower. Driven by state-of-the-art cable car technology, the design is as impressive as it is innovative. The idea was born in 2005 to create a ‘vertical pier’ on Brighton seafront, located on the site of the original West Pier. Guests can ‘walk on air’ and gain a unique perspective on the city from above, just as the original pier welcomed Victorian society to ‘walk on water’.
It took 10 years and the expertise of hundreds of people across Europe to turn British Airways i360 from a concept into reality. This summer it is ready to welcome you and your family to see the coast from a seagull’s view. Following your flight you can visit the onsite gift shop, grab a bite to eat in the restaurant or walk straight out onto the beach for a paddle in the sea. Rain or shine, British Airways i360 will never fail to lift your spirits.
Competition Time! We’ve teamed up with British Airways i360 to offer you the chance to WIN tickets for flights at the landmark attraction so you and a friend can take to the skies. To enter visit our website www.rhuncovered.co.uk
Family Fun Children absolutely love the British Airways i360 pod. Families are free to walk around, pointing out landmarks, watching seagulls and spotting boats out at sea. Before boarding the pod, tech-savy children can enjoy animations and a photo hunt around the site on the free-to-download British Airways i360 app. Sky High Refreshments On board the pod, enjoy a drink at the Nyetimber Sky Bar, one of the most unique bars in the UK, serving a range of fine drinks from Sussex including Nyetimber, an award winning sparkling wine. If you are seeking the romantic touch, take an evening flight to enjoy the sunset and twinkling city lights below.
Wine and Dine Visitors can relax over a delicious meal in the stylish restaurant which boasts stunning views from its beachside terrace. Serving dishes created using locally-sourced ingredients, the menus are inspired by the seasons. The modern bistro is ideal for families and has a wide variety of options for adults and children alike. Alternatively, you can enjoy a classic afternoon tea served with finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of mini patisseries. If you are looking for something a little more informal, do not worry - If you are looking for a light bite, head to the West Pier Tea Room for coffee and cake.

Scotsman Makes Flying Visit To East Grinstead The iconic Flying Scotsman locomotive visited East Grinstead in April for a week of special journeys along the Bluebell Railway. The legendary steam engine picked up passengers and travelled the 11 mile Bluebell Railway between the town and Sheffield Park for the first time. The Bluebell Railway was one of three heritage railways across the country selected by the National Railway Museum for the classic steam train to visit this year. The locomotive arrived privately to the Bluebell Railway before the official launch on Thursday, April 13. During the visit, East Grinstead’s promotions team set up a pop-up location at the Bluebell Railway to let people know what else the town had to offer. Visitors who were unable to get a seat on the steam engine but still wanted to see it were able to pay for admission to Bluebell Railway stations at Sheffield Park, Horsted Keynes and Kingscote.
From its wild home in the Asian steppes, the tulip emerged to conquer the world”. Standen’s garden is open daily between 10.00am – 5.00pm, (last entry to the house is 4.00pm), with a full programme of guided tours and special events to enjoy the gardens. Volunteering For School Leavers Getting a first job or securing that college or university place can often come down to added extras on a CV, one big plus is voluntary work - here is our guide to getting started. By Shelley Welti How Can Volunteering Help? Whether you are heading off to college or university, or hoping to step onto the career ladder, one sure-fire way of getting noticed is by volunteering. In fact, according to a Time Bank/Reed survey 73% of the UK’s biggest businesses would employ a candidate with volunteering experience instead of one without. The study also found that 94% of businesses surveyed believe that volunteering adds to skills and 58% say that voluntary work experience can often be more valuable than experience gained in paid employment. So, volunteering is certainly not to be sniffed at – especially if you want your CV to stand out from the crowd. As well as looking fantastic on your application form, a volunteer placement is not just something to do to impress future employers or further education institutions – it can offer you a window into the world you would ideally like to work in and ensure that it is for you. This can bring you confidence and also contacts too - we all know how true the saying ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ can be. Finding The Perfect Placement You have decided to volunteer, now where do you start to look for placements? If you are hoping to volunteer in the industry you would like to work in, research a few companies you feel would be a good fit for your career. Be realistic though; if expenses are not paid which with most placements they will not be, think about not travelling too far, due to cost. Large organisations attract a lot of interest and will book up months in advance, so it’s best to get in there early. It is also worth noting that many companies cannot take on placements for those aged 18 or younger due to insurance reasons.

If you are open to doing something a bit different and would like to add a varied range of skills to your CV, the world is your oyster! Perhaps you would like to help out in a charity shop? Manage the social media accounts for a local charity? Befriend elderly residents, to give them someone to talk to and help them get out and about? Websites such as www.do-it.org are great places to look for placements, as are local community and volunteering centres.
Added Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is not just about skills and CVs though - it can also benefit you as a person and other people too. Studies have found that volunteering builds students’ self-confidence, improves communication and gives a great sense of achievement. It also gives a purpose to finding and trying out new hobbies and can also see you working abroad - making the most of your gap year or holiday. Best of all, volunteering offers you the opportunity to make a difference to other people’s lives – especially in the charity sector, so what are you waiting for? Get volunteering!

STYLE
Conditioning Your Hair For Summer
The summer sun and heat can take it out of our hair - now more than ever conditioning is important to keep tresses looking and feeling great! By Shelley Welti
H
ere are our favourite homemade recipes to keep your hair looking HOT and frazzle-free. Oil Rich Avocado Mask The superfood of the moment – is there nothing the humble avocado cannot do? Instead of mashing it up for your toast, mix with an egg and apply to wet hair for a moisture-rich treatment that will have your hair back to its bouncy best before breakfast. After 20 minutes, wash off and style as normal. Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, this trusty avocado treatment should be used once a week to restore a healthy shine to stressed-out tresses.

Mediterranean Moisture We all know that the healthy Mediterranean diet and olive oil go hand-in-hand, so it is time to take inspiration from the strong locks, and diets of the Italians, Spanish and Greeks and treat our hair to an olive oil treatment. Warm up 125ml of olive oil and drench your tresses with it. Then cover with a plastic bag, wrap in a towel and relax for 45 minutes. Simply shampoo and rinse out to reveal revived and happy hair! An Egg-cellent Moisture Treatment As we all know, eggs are a great source of protein – not just for our bodies, but our hair too! Our locks need protein to be healthy, so this egg-cellent DIY egg treatment will certainly help to make tired tresses feel fabulous again. Simply mix two egg yolks with two teaspoons of vegetable oil and two teaspoons of water and massage into your hair after shampooing. Leave for 30 minutes then rinse out with cool water for hair that feels shiny and strong!

Conditioning Coconut Not just for the kitchens of the health-conscious; coconut oil really is a natural wonder product when it comes to dry skin and hair. Spoon a tablespoon of coconut oil and heat for a few seconds to turn into a liquid. Then apply to the ends of damp hair. For sun-frazzled locks, leave on overnight and shampoo out the next morning for further conditioning. Bananas for a Banana Mask Reach for the fruit bowl and instead of tucking into a banana, mash it up with a tablespoon of olive oil until it resembles a puree to create a hair mask that will not only smell fruity but leave your locks feeling juicy too! Massage into dry hair and leave for at least thirty minutes. Rinse thoroughly, shampoo and style as normal.

I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.
We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos

Changing Seasons – Here Comes The Sun! Thinking of accessorising for summer? The warmth of summer is here, so now is the time to add some summery ideas to your interior designing to make sure you change with the seasons! By Jacob White
J
une sees the longest day, the beginning of the Wimbledon Championships and Glastonbury Festival – all sure fire signs that the height of the British summer is here and we have a listed of the top 10 ways for you to get your home buzzing to the sights, scents and colours of the summer vibe of 2017! Pare Down Why not think of your home as a holiday apartment and see it in a new light? Get rid of pieces of furniture and fabrics which are dark or gloomy and stow away those heavy accessories, save the throws for autumn and winter!
Garden Fresh Bring the outdoors in! Freshly picked flowers can do marvels to a home – it is always best to go for arrangements that feature warm colours such as bold oranges and vibrant pinks – save reds and purples for the winter months!
Live Natural Add some organic appeal to your home! Why not consider introducing plants into the home? Some plants will require little care and they will be the perfect addition to a summery table or side unit display – natural equals character!
Furniture Update An effective way to bring new life to old furniture and add a splash of colour is to give a tired chair or table a new life with some summery hues! Make sure you properly prime the furniture before adding tones such as sky blue and grassy green.
Dine Colourfully Meal time is another chance for you to add a splash of colour to your – mix in some bright floral or tropical themes which will ramp-up your summertime look! A great idea is to set-up a small table to create an impromptu bar with bottles.
Swap Art If you have a dark wall or two in your home why not add some colourful art pieces? The art does not have to be expensive with affordable pieces available online or from a local charity shop. One large or several small pieces can do the trick!
New View A fireplace is great focal point during the winter months but why not considering moving your furniture away during summer? Rather than huddling around a source of winter warmth shift the focus to a window or French doors!
Emotional Fabric The colours we choose can instantly lift a room’s mood and in turn yours and that of your house guests. Try bright, botanical prints for 2017 on bedding. Let the patterns shine but make sure to keep the wall colours neutral.
Summer Scents If you like to have a fresh scent running through your home – whether you use candles, infuser sticks or plug-ins make sure you change with the seasons! Evergreen is good for winter but summer should be about ocean breeze!
Go Casual The summer offers opportunities to find unexpected uses for formal serving piece. Mix things up a little and be original, why not try these ideas – a silver try for holding your glassware or plant your herb garden in a champagne bucket!

25 Years Of Blinding Customer Service! 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Interior Blinds UK. The Crawley Down made to measure blind manufacturing and fitting company was founded in 1992 by Andrew Pike, from humble beginnings, in his parent’s garage. Andrew had been making blinds for a number of years before being made redundant – on redundancy he decided to put his experience into action and give running his own business a go. Initially specialising in making vertical blinds, as the business order book grew, Andrew moved his business to its first premises in Shipley Bridge Farm, and here, he moved on to making roller blinds. Now, 25 years later he manufactures all but specialist Roman blinds onsite in his Crawley Down factory and showroom facility, and offers bespoke blinds to each customer’s needs.
“Interior Blinds UK is a family business – in the early days, Andrew and his mother would work on the blind fabric and father Brian would collect supplies – including trips as far afield as Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.”

How does Andrew differ to other blind manufacturers and installers? • Interior Blinds UK offers a full and comprehensive package. They provide a start-to-finish service to customers which all too often other blind companies simply cannot, or are not willing to offer. • Interior Blinds UK offers specialist blinds which are made to measure around almost any window shape and their assortment on offer includes top-of-the-range motorised blinds. • Despite two recessions, Andrew continues to build up the business and throughout the time in business he has proved resourceful.

“The beauty here is we see the customer throughout the process, we hear their thoughts. We get to know them and their requirements and as a result we can offer them what they really want. The aim of Interior Blinds UK is to advise the customer of the best possible option and outcome.”
“There is no job too big, nor, too small! The local element is critical to the operations of Interior Blinds UK – amendments or replacement components can be sourced much quicker than with national blind companies. If you like, you can even visit the business to watch your blinds being made in Sussex.”
Interior Blinds UK is accredited for manufacturing and installing child-safe blinds with the British Blind and Shutter Association.

We don’t have any problems recommending the RH Uncovered magazine to other local businesses because we find it so successful! Interior Blinds UK Ltd are local manufacturers, suppliers and installers of made to measure bespoke blinds and are based in Crawley Down (RH10). They started advertising in our first RH Uncovered magazine soon after we launched in 2006. They have since increased their campaigns and now appear in three magazines, so we met with Brian and asked why they chose our RH Uncovered magazine to start their campaign all those years ago and how it has worked for them... “We were looking for a magazine that was going to be distributed locally. The beauty of using RH Uncovered really comes down to the fact in is going into local homes and distributed by the Royal Mail, and has articles as well as advertising inside it.
By advertising regularly and consistently, we find we get a very good return for the investment of the advert! We started off with using one of the magazines and now we use three of them on a regular basis so we get a large distribution throughout the whole of the local area.
We have built up this beautiful working relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. What we do find is that more often than not somebody will walk in clutching a copy of the RH Uncovered magazine, or once we have asked them how they have heard us we find out that they have seen our advert. We have built up this beautiful relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. GARDENS
Water Great Idea!
Water adds another dimension to any garden – the sight and sound of running water can lift and relax us no matter how stressful our day has been. The additional sound and light a water feature offers can bring a garden to life. Here are simple ideas to ensure your water feature is at is best. By Jacob White
T
he design of your water feature is important – it must be something that you can live with and be within your budget. The water feature does not have to include sculptures or fussy glitz – a simple, informal wildlife pool can still be stunning as an attractive addition as well as a learning resource. If you decide a pond is for you then here are some tip tops to make sure it works for you: Pond Life To ensure your new garden pond does not leak away use a good-quality liner such as a EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) liner which is at least 1mm thick. It is recommended that you lay the liner across an underlay.
Three-quarters of the sides of the pond should be planted with plants such as flowering rush or marsh marigold and although a natural pond does not get cleaned if you find your pond becomes sludgy use calcium sulphate to clean.
The drums must be installed outside of the pond – if you’re using the filter as part of an elaborate fountain it should be in keeping with it. If you are keeping fish it can be challenging to keep the water clear and you will need a more sophisticated filter.
Crystal Clear To keep a pond crystal clear you need to install a filtration system otherwise draining, cleaning and refilling is far too time-consuming. Self-cleaning drum filters which are either gravity-fed or pumped are a good choice for a pond novice.
Water Retention Water features lose water through evaporation faster than you may think – you can install an automatic top-up unit fitted with a sensor but these can be expensive and by law cannot be filled from the mains supply - a cheaper alternative is a garden hose.
Find Balance A good pH balance with no algal outbreaks is essential, to achieve this the pond needs to be ideally an area of 30m3 with a depth of around 1.5m in place and try to cover around two-thirds of the water surface with floating plants.
