Keep Calm And Bat On!

Cricket is a worldwide passion, played everywhere from a test match arena to a village green like the historical Scaynes Hill Cricket Club. No other sport compares in terms of the number of skills displayed - the game offers a blend of subtlety, entertainment, precision, sudden thrill and endless enthusiasm. By Georgia Lambert

S

caynes Hill Cricket Club was established in 1905 and is a thriving village sports club with many supporters, including the famous stage and screen actors Sonnie Hale and his wife, Jessica Matthews. On Friday, June 16 1939 the stars paid a visit to the club with a cricket team made up of the cast from their new musical I Can Take It which was showing at the Brighton Hippodrome at the time. Their team challenged the Scaynes Hill boys to a game of cricket, and although they lost to the club, they showed that they could take it in the best spirit of the game - howzat for a claim to fame?! The club is committed to growing, not only in numbers but in the quality of their facilities and the enjoyment both on and off the pitch. In order to achieve these objectives, they are committed to building links with the local community and other

organisations such as local schools. Cricket promotes an active and healthy lifestyle and allows members of the community to enjoy a game and to build social networks in a friendly environment. The club plays on the picturesque grounds of Freshfield’s Vinery which backs onto the Bluebell Railway, and this is where annual events are held. “We aim to provide a safe, nurturing and welcoming environment for all the members, playing the game to the best of our abilities whilst upholding the game’s best traditions. We aim to uphold the principles embodied in the spirit of the game and aspire to be a club that others hold in high regard and who they enjoy competing against,” said a member of the club.

The club is not just looking for players of all abilities, they are also looking for supporters to come along and enjoy a game of cricket. The club is on the hunt for enthusiastic volunteers to help with ground work, umpiring and scoring. If you fancy an after-match tipple, the club also operates a fully-licensed bar for their members. If you or your child would like to try out, you are welcome to attend one of their training sessions on Saturday mornings from 10.00am-11.30am, and you will get the chance to talk to one of the coaches and meet others along with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Junior training is from 5+ - 15 year-olds, held on Saturdays 10.00am - 11.30am and 16+ is held on Thursdays from 6.00pm - 8.00pm.

Time 4 Children

Time 4 Children is a Mid Sussex-based charity providing a listening ear for children when they are going through emotionally times in their lives.

T

By Georgia Lambert

he charity is passionate about improving the emotional wellbeing of young children and offers the most important ingredient for children’s emotional wellbeing – listening and time. Giving children the time and space to be listened to, reduces children’s anxiety, improves their self-confidence, self-esteem and increases their emotional resilience. Time 4 Children believes every child should have someone to listen to their thoughts, feelings, worries and anxieties when they are struggling to cope with the many pressures placed upon their young shoulders in today’s fast paced adult world. From small beginnings in 2005 supporting just a handful of children, Time 4 Children now helps more than 55 primary school age children each year by giving them the one-to-one emotional support they need. More than 750 children throughout Mid Sussex and Crawley have benefited from the support Time 4 Children has given them. Most children have between 15 and 20 sessions although some need children may need more, depending on

6

their individual needs. Children’s sessions take place in schools to reduce disruption to education and children from harder to reach families can be helped. The charity has a team of highly trained volunteers who support the children, and all volunteers are DBS checked and have regular training in Safeguarding Children. Time 4 Children is now recruiting for its next volunteer training course which starts in September and would love to hear from anyone who is interested in the type of work the charity does. Vicky Chalmers, the charity’s founder, said: “We do not provide counselling or play therapy, we are there to provide emotional listening support, giving children oneto-one sessions in a calm and emotionally safe space. Play is a child’s natural language to explore their own thoughts, feelings and experiences.’ “In the child’s sessions, he or she is able to explore and make sense of their worlds by using small world families and furniture, animals, worry dolls, puppets, soldiers and a sand tray, or arts and crafts to express

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

themselves. Our volunteers are trained to use reflective listening skills, which is the key to enabling children to speak freely about whatever they choose.’ “The volunteer quietly reflects on the child’s facial expressions and body language as well as reflecting on whatever the child chooses to play with, create or talk about. Every child has his or her thoughts, feelings, worries and experiences listened to and acknowledged. Closure of sessions is planned carefully and sensitively with every child over several sessions, so as not to create feelings of loss.” At a time when emotional help for young children is hard to find, Time 4 Children is needed more than ever. Time 4 Children’s ethos has always been to provide a free service for children. The charity has to raise all funds itself in order to carry forward their ethos.

COMMUNITY

Opening Eyes To A Better Life SeeKenya is a UK-based charity working to reduce blindness and provide specialist treatment and eye care services to marginalised communities in Kenya. With more than 95% of Kenyans living without access to eye care, there is a desperate need for help.

W

orking with church partners, SeeKenya are able to provide basic eye drops for the treatment of trachoma, which is the leading form of infectious blindness in children. They also perform cataract surgery and supply pairs of ready-made glasses to those who need them. The work of SeeKenya is led by Haywards Heath-based Pete and Rachel Marson. After a visit to Kenya in 2010, Pete was deeply affected by the widespread poverty and the inaccessibility of eye care services. Following the trip, Pete made the decision to use his skills as an optometrist to lead volunteers help the poorest communities in Kenya - the charity has a clinic, working in the poorest regions of Meru and Samburu, north of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. SeeKenya became a registered charity in May 2013 - Pete, Rachel and their three children are all members of the

By Georgia Lambert King’s Church Mid Sussex and see their work as an important part of their Christian faith. Sadly, more than three million people are classified as blind, simply because they do not have access to a pair of glasses. This issue can seriously affect their livelihood and their ability to live and support their families. Statistically, women are at a higher risk of becoming visually impaired. There are currently 10,000 blind children in Kenya, and this problem could have been avoided with basic eye drops. Avoidable blindness is an issue that affects the whole community - for many, going blind can mean the end of their education, job - and in turn, livelihood and independence meaning they will be less able to provide for their families and the communities that support them. By building relationships with the local people, SeeKenya aims to help educate communities about the importance of eye

health, especially in children. Poor eyesight, not just blindness, impacts on a child’s ability to read a chalkboard or a book and has a huge impact on their education. By using basic eye drops, adolescent blindness will reduce, and 40% of the causes are preventable and treatable. Just £3.00 can provide eye drops to prevent blindness in 10 children, £20.00 can buy glasses for seven people, and £60.00 can pay for a cataract operation. If you would like to give the gift of sight and improve a person’s life, there are many ways you can donate and fundraise. In November 2016 Pete and Rachel’s son Joel, organised a tea party which was streamed on Facebook Live. But this was not any old tea party - many viewers watched in anticipation, a once blonde Joel revealed his newly dyed, flamboyant pink hair! Exceeding his target and raising more than £700.00, Joel’s effort has contributed to the incredible difference that this charity is doing.

Understanding Autism

Did you know that approximately one in 88 people in the UK could have autism? Meaning more than 750,000 people are autistic and that 2.8m people have a relative on the autism spectrum. How do you know if your child is autistic, and if that is the case, where can you find help and support?

A

By Shelley Welti

utism is a developmental condition that affects the way that individuals with autism interact with other people and how they perceive the world around them. Those with autism see, hear and feel day-to-day life differently than those without the condition, often finding things overwhelming, leading to anxiety. Each individual on the autistic spectrum has autism specific to them, meaning one person can be different to the next. Certain difficulties include not being able to socially communicate with others, or offer empathy, need routines and having obsessive behaviour. However, it can manifest in different people in different ways, and some may have learning difficulties or mental health issues too. Autism is a lifelong condition, usually diagnosed in childhood and early adulthood with no cure, but that does not mean that those diagnosed cannot lead a fulfilling, independent life. Today, more adults are now being diganosed with autism. Does My Child Have Autism? If you think your child may have autism, it is best to speak with your health visitor, doctor, or school nurse about your concerns. The main characteristics of autism in children are - difficulties with social communication, such as not being able to interpret gestures, tone of voice and sarcasm correctly, social interaction issues, including the inability to ‘read’ people’s feelings, with them appearing insensitive or not behaving in a way thought to be ‘socially acceptable’, a need for repetitive routines, due to finding the world an unstable and unpredictable place, children with autism may need a strict daily routine, so they know what to expect. Some autistic children may find they experience high-sensitivity to sounds, tastes, light, temperature or pain, which those without autism may not even notice. This can cause further anxiety and even physical pain. Your doctor can then refer you to specialists who can help you with a diagnosis and offer support. Identification earlier in life can save

frustration for those with the condition. It can also help family, friends and teachers, understand the difficulties experienced and how to cope. On-going Support As well as doctors and specialists other organisations and charities including The National Autistic Society, Anna Kennedy Online and Autism Sussex offer help and advice. Autism Support Crawley (www.autismsupportcrawley.co.uk) is a support group for parents and carers caring for someone with autism. It offers the opportunity for loved ones to meet and share their experiences.

For more information about Sandown Park Racecourse, visit: www.sandown.co.uk

What do you think has been the appeal to make you the most successful artists to have appeared on X Factor? Olly, said: “I’d like to think that I’ve done some great songs and, think people love what I do. The 24 Hrs album is probably the most heartbreaking, most honest album I’ve done but I think with previous albums you know I have a lot of fun, my albums are happy, still got lots of that vibe on it.” You have done a run of outdoor shows this summer, how do they vary in terms of what you put into them and what you get out of them, from the indoors to the outdoors? Olly, said: “It’s really fun being outside and you know the show that we’re doing at Sandown Park is a different gig for me, I’ve never done anything like this before, I’ve done racecourse gigs before in the past but not this sort of size. I can’t wait I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, I can go there during the day I can, have a flutter on a couple of the races and do a gig in the evening. Perfect.” Have you got any kind of pre-stage ritual that you perform before you go on? Olly, said: “Me and the band have a little huddle up before the show and we sing one of our songs, well not a song, a song that we’ve got as a team and we’ve been doing it for the last six/seven years so it’s a bit of a ritual but I’m sure we’ll be sinking a few shots before the show as well just to get into the racecourse spirit.”

Five Minutes with Mike Founder and Owner Mike Potts Why did you decide to get ISO accreditation? “The reason we decided to get accreditation is that although we receive a lot of customer testimonials and a high retention rate we couldn’t qualify this but an accreditation does. We want to take the next step to improving where we are and lead us to being a better business.”

What does the accreditation mean? “All of our business procedures from start to finish were independently audited by management system specialists CQS. The award recognises S4B Document Solutions commitment to an exceptional quality of service and customer focus as well as compliance.”

How does the accreditation help offer customers peace of mind? “We’re experts in the secure storage and ultimate secure destruction. The ISO grading we’ve achieved is a global benchmark for quality and means we’re at the forefront of our industry and all destruction work we carry out for example is followed-up with a certificate of destruction.”

Who can you help? “We work with businesses of all sizes from large to small. We can offer a price comparison with your existing storage provider, so contact our friendly and reliable team. We offer the highest possible service level and our staff are comprehensively screened and CRB checked.’ “Contact us for a no-obligation quote. GARDENS

The Best Of The Season’s Colours The summer is all about bright, lively and vibrant colours - your garden should be no different! We have a rundown of the bedding plants that can give your summer garden a serious splash of colour! By Jacob White

S

ummer bedding plants do not just have to be petunias and marigolds! As well as popular bedding plants you can choose from a large range of annual bedding plants. Here is our rundown of the bedding plants which can turn your garden from drab to delightful this summer! Sweet peas These make a fantastic cottage garden! Let the sweet peas scramble up obelisks or wigwams where they can reach heights of 1.8m (6”), or try dwarf sweet peas for groundcover at the front of beds and borders. With their rich and delightful fragrance, and wide range of colours, sweet peas are excellent summer bedding plants and can provide bunches of gorgeous fragrant cut flowers throughout summer! Antirrhinum Much-loved for their flowery spikes and long-flowering period, Antirrhinums have mouth-like flowers which open when squeezed. Available in a range of colours, snapdragon plants vary in height, from dwarf plants no taller than 25cm (10”) to large plants such as Antirrhinum Royal Bride which reach around 90cm (35”). Dwarf snapdragons can be used in borders and patio containers, and if you are looking for bedding plants that attract bees, Antirrhinums are a great source of nectar.

Begonia A versatile summer bedding plant, they are loved for their flamboyant and colourful blooms. They also boast an ability to thrive in both sun and shade. Flowering throughout the summer and up to the first frosts, they can be upright or trailing and are suitable for beds, hanging baskets and window boxes. Californian poppy This annual is sown directly in beds and borders, and will happily self-seed and create colour year after year. Traditionally orange, there is now a plethora of colours including yellow and red. The blooms are borne above blue-green foliage, and are attractive to bees. Thriving in dry soil, simply scatter the seeds where you want them to flower and they take care of themselves. Cosmos The saucer-shaped flowers are a source of late nectar for pollinating insects. The Cosmos’ fern-like foliage adds texture to bedding schemes and works well in an informal cottage-style bed or border. These summer plants are available in shades of pink, red and white with Cosmos Sulphureus offering yellow, orange and red. Cosmos plants begin blooming in mid-summer and flower until autumn.

HEALTH

Do You Fear The Dentist? Most people will say they do not look forward to a dental appointment but for some there is a deep feeling of anxiety and fear which is keeping them away – in fact, a British Dental Health Foundation survey found that for 36% of those who did not see a dentist regularly, fear was the number one reason. By Jacob White

D

o you, or does someone you know, suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia? Some people with the condition are putting themselves at risk of serious illness with a higher risk of gum disease and early tooth loss. There are professional out there to help even the most nervous to say “argh!” no more.

Causes Pain Of those who had not seen a dentist for 12 months, 6% reported fear of pain; this fear is common in those aged 40 or older as their early visits to the dentist were at a time before advances in dentistry. Helplessness and loss of control Like many phobias about situations there is often a feeling for a sufferer that they have no control of a situation. They sit still in a dentist chair and feel unable to predict what is going to happen next. Embarrassment The mouth is an intimate part of the body; people can feel ashamed or embarrassed by having a stranger looking inside. This may be a problem if you are self-conscious about the look of your teeth.

Symptoms

There is not a clearly defined boundary separating anxiety and phobia, everyone has fears and concerns and copes in different ways. However, some of the signs of dental phobia include: • You feel tense or have trouble sleeping before a visit to the dentist

What To Expect On A Dental Visit

If you have not been to a dentist for some time, they will want to take a full health history. On follow-up visits if your health status changes tell your dentist. Here is what to expect on a visit: Thorough Clean A dental hygienist or dentist will remove built-up plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other oral health problems. Dental Examination Your dentist will perform an examination of your teeth, gums and mouth, looking for problems. X-Rays These can diagnose problems otherwise unnoticed, such as damaged jawbones and tumours.

Ways To Ease Fear

• Find an understanding dentist – ask friends and family for recommendations • Pick an appointment early in the morning so you have less time to dwell on it

• You get increasingly nervous in the waiting room

• Take a friend with you – a dentist won’t mind if they accompany you on your visit

• The sight of dental instruments and nursing staff increases your anxiety

• Agree a sign with the dentist to signal that you need a break and want them to stop

• You panic or have trouble breathing when objects are placed in your mouth

• Take a personal listening device to listen to music which can help you relax

Sedation Clinics: If you are visiting a dentist and need treatment, ask your dentist whether they offer a form of sedation. If they cannot offer sedation they can refer you to a sedation clinic. The sedation clinics are specifically for nervous dental patients. They can provide either inhalation sedation through a small mask or an injection into your hand or arm – you will be awake during treatment but you will be calm throughout and you probably will not be able to remember the treatment!
