The secrets of the Isle of Thorns By Jacob White

L

ying within the grounds owned by Cats Protection at Chelwood Gate within Ashdown Forest is an area with a rich history – a journey which brings us to the modern day through farming, education and sport. The Isle of Thorns is both a contradiction and an enigma - the name of the areas goes back to at least the 16th century with its origins likely from a description of the terrain – an area enclosed by thorns. A thorny enclosed space of land would be ideal for keeping sheep safe from predators such as foxes and other wild animals and as such was used for farming and the keeping of animals for local people. The bowls club which today takes centre stage was founded in 1909 by a group of former Etonians – Sir Edward Cadogan, Gerald Wellesley, Arthur Villiers and Alfred Wagg growing out of existing work.

Since 1880, the area had operating in it a mission church supported by Eton College - thereafter a boys camp developed in the 1920s with inner-city school boys visiting rural Sussex for outdoor activities. Boys from Hackney came in large numbers to benefit from the fresh air the countryside had to offer in contrast to the urban environments of London they lived in and to instill a sense of adventure. The camp was started by the Eton Manor Boys’ Club (EMBC) with the ethos of adopting an adventurous ‘can do’ attitude where boys were expected to take part in as many activities as possible. Amenities available to the boys included a swimming pool, a gymnasium and accommodation blocks at the

site and by 1934 a bowling green had been constructed in the grounds for the boys to use. In 1964, Sussex University had the use of the area and to this day their observatory located in the grounds is still in working order – the sale of the grounds to Cats Protection took place in 2002. The bowling green is now considered to be one of the finest bowling greens in the South East of England and the club manages to combine casual bowling with more competitive club matches. The tranquil setting of the whole of the Isle of Thorns makes for an ideal working and playing environment – those working or visiting the Cats Protection or those playing bowls at the club. Arriving at the Cats Protection visitors travel along a pleasant tree-lined lane to an area of great outstanding natural beauty, both the Centre and the club are worth paying a visit!

When Haywards Heath got on track It’s full-steam ahead as this year marks the 175th anniversary of Haywards Heath train station! In conversation with Sue Burgess of Cuckfield Museum. By Jacob White

W

ith the train problems encountered by so many of the county’s commuters, there’s barely a day that passes without train travel hitting the headlines. Back in 1841, train travel was hitting the headlines for all the right reasons; it was fullsteam ahead as the railway came to Mid Sussex. To get a better understanding of what the coming of the railway meant to Mid Sussex, I spoke with Sue Burgess of Cuckfield Museum. The museum is devoting much of its display space for a three-month exhibition commemorating the opening of Haywards Heath railway station 175 years ago. Haywards Heath train station opened to the travellers on July 12, 1841, but was only a terminus initially. Instability problems with the Folly Hill Tunnel and associated rail works just South of the station postponed opening the rail line through to Brighton until September 21, 1841. As a result of this delay, train passengers had to rely on coach travel to complete their journeys beyond Haywards Heath southbound; this could be viewed as the replacement bus of their day! Something that train travellers of today will be sadly all too familiar with on their travels! Cuckfield Museum is bringing this to life with a gallery of photos and maps to illustrate the social impact of the coming of the railway to Mid Sussex, and not least in Cuckfield, which as a result of the railway lost the London to Brighton stagecoach trade but gained many large houses.

George Child watercolour South end of Haywards Heath tunnel

The homes, built for, or acquired by professional men, were ideal for those who could now work in London but live in the country – the very first commuters. Mid Sussex soon became part of a growing commuter-belt in the towns of Mid Sussex as society went through a period of change. Sue, said: “Paintings, images and contemporary accounts, are graphic reminders of what incredibly hard work was involved in creating, by an army of navvies, a sufficiently level railway track through the undulating Sussex landscape. Also, part of the display will be a previously unseen print.’ “Cuckfield Museum is grateful for help from the Bluebell Railway, the Burgess Hill Model Railway Club and collectors - all have been generous in providing various models, images and artefacts. This display will appeal to anyone with an interest in railways in general and their impact” Sue added. Sue Burgess is a curator at Cuckfield Museum, Queens Hall, High Street, Cuckfield, West Sussex, RH17 5EL. The Museum is open Wednesday 10 am – 12.30pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10 am – 4 pm, or by appointment.

The volunteers making Sussex safer By Georgia Lambert

S

earch Dogs Sussex is a voluntary organisation founded in March 2003 in response to the disappearance of Sarah Payne in Pulborough, West Sussex. They are a nationally qualified search and rescue dog team, and they support the police and emergency services when locating vulnerable, missing people around Sussex. The team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, come rain or shine and their hard work and commitment paid off when the organisation received the highest honour of being rewarded with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services. Search Dogs Sussex are members of the Association of Lowland Search and Rescue organisation who are the UK governing body, in charge of assessing each handler and their dog. As mentioned previously, the team is made up entirely of dog-loving volunteers who, together with their dogs, undergo constant training and must meet rigorous standards in order to obtain operational status.

10

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

They are required to attend a two day basic search technician course, qualify as a first aider, undergo water safety classes, fitness tests and get their Bronze Navigation certificate. From this level of training, members of the team are able to progress to become operational dog handlers. Recently the team took part in a night exercise with the Hazardous Area Response Team. The specialised paramedics provide medical care to patients in the ‘hot zone’ of hazardous environments like flooding or collapsed buildings. This was a great experience for Search Dog Sussex and the dogs proved vital in finding and rescuing the patient.

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

Regardless of breed, dogs have many desirable attributes that make them perfect search and rescue companions. A dog’s brain is specialised for identifying scents and they rely on their noses to interpret the world around them. Alongside this, they have physical endurance which makes it easy for them to tackle tough terrain and have a heightened sense of sight especially in the dark, which makes them an excellent search tool for the team. These furry friends undergo training with their owner every weekend to nurture the skills they have learnt. Initial training usually takes eighteen months or longer.

 01342 718348

Many members of the team have got every day jobs but volunteering their time with Search Dogs Sussex is another very rewarding job and they train hard to stay as professional as possible. ‘When we find the missing person, we know we are helping the families, regardless of whether it is a good or a bad outcome’ expressed Steve Woods, a member of the team. To raise awareness of the charity, they attend events like Paws in the Park, 999 emergency service days and they hold talks for organisations to raise money for the team. All funds raised go towards essential equipment such as canine first aid kits, radios and hi-visibility clothing. Search Dogs Sussex are always looking for volunteers to help in training sessions as well as providing support for the dog handlers.

Storage 4 ALSAR Search Dogs Sussex This funding will enable to the team to purchase a shipping container and transport it to its new home, giving us secure storage for all our equipment. Search Dogs Sussex is a voluntary organisation founded in 2003. We are a group of ordinary people, with everyday jobs, but combine our love of the outdoors and working with dogs, with a desire to help others that are vulnerable. We provide nationally qualified search dog teams to support the emergency services when looking for vulnerable missing people. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, come rain or shine. https://www.gofundme.com/2b27ccvp

ADVERTORIAL

Pre-Paid Funeral Plans – Peace of mind for you and your loved ones It goes without saying that losing a loved-one is an incredibly stressful and emotional time, with considerations such as funeral expenses often causing further concern and stress.

O

ver recent years there has been huge coverage in the media about funeral costs, which, for the last two decades, have consistently risen far in excess of the annual rate of inflation. Average funeral costs have increased from £1,230 in 1997 to over £4000 today – an increase of over 225%*. Taking out a pre-paid funeral plan fixes the cost of the funeral director’s fees and services at today’s prices, meaning whatever they cost in the future, there will never be anything additional for your family or estate to have to pay towards them. In the current period of low interest rates, many people now see the huge benefit in ‘investing’ capital into a pre-paid funeral plan instead of conventional savings accounts, given they’re a far more effective and robust means of budgeting for what is, alongside taxes, life’s only inevitable expense. In addition to helping your loved-ones in the financial sense, taking out a funeral plan also allows you to dictate the precise format of a funeral, thus alleviating any uncertainty amongst those left behind as to what you’d like the service to include. At Good Wills, we work in partnership with Safe Hands – one of the UK’s leading providers of pre-paid funeral plans.

Endorsed by the National Federation of Funeral Directors, Safe Hands Funeral Plans combine affordability with outstanding levels of service and care. Safe Hands Funeral Plans offer a range of five different plans to suit different tastes and budgets. Ranging in price from £1695 to £3700, all can be tailored for either cremation or burial. Safe Hands also offer a host of affordable payment terms, with interest free options available if you spread the cost over 12 or 24 months. In common with all funeral plans, the monies you pay for your Safe Hands Funeral Plan are held securely in a ring-fence trust fund, where, over the course of your lifetime, they are invested by independent, specialist, trust fund managers. Then when you pass away, the monies (including interest generated) are released from the trust and paid to a local, reputable, funeral director who then will conduct your funeral in accordance with the instructions contained within your plan. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information, or call Safe Hands Funeral Plans direct on 0800 917 7099 quoting Good Wills.

HOMES

Beautiful bathrooms on a budget

Big ideas, small budget? Don’t despair it’s easy to create a luxurious looking bathroom without spending a fortune. By Nikki Relffe-Arnold

I

f your bathroom is looking tired or oldfashioned, there is plenty you can do to bring it bang-upto-date on a budget! By simply using plain white sanitary ware as your starter, we’ve got lots of ideas to help you to create that elegant and up-market look all without breaking the bank, but still giving you the wow factor! If you already have a white bathroom suite, there’s absolutely no reason to replace it. If you haven’t, and can budget for one then, it will give you a great base from which to begin your bathroom makeover. Replacing the taps on your bath and basin with quality fittings will instantly give your suite that much-needed lift the choices are endless from Art Deco or old brass to chrome or brushed steel. A radiator that doubles as a towel rail will save you buying the items separately. A cheaper option would be to attach a towel holder above your existing radiator or lean a towel ladder against the wall.

If you’re fond of the shabby chic look and have the room, a step ladder with towels stacked neatly on the rungs, is a fun way to display them. Instead of pricey stone or marble wall or floor tiles, find a look-alike ceramic or porcelain one widely available from good tile shops, which are attractive, stain-resistant, light and therefore easy to lay. When putting in new tiles save by only covering specific areas; perhaps up to half height around the room, or else just the splash backs next to the bath and basin. Use paint everywhere else. If you can’t afford to replace your current flooring – a washable rug will give an instant luxurious lift. Invest in some good quality towels to match and these can be changed with your rug to reflect the seasons. Although a fully-mirrored wall might not be in your budget, it will give a sense of light to your bathroom. Otherwise, look for mirrors to fit with your theme and place them above the basin and the bath.

Instead of installing a blind or having your windows sandblasted, ensure your privacy cheaply and quickly by using glass etching spray or stick-on film which these days comes in a wide range of patterns. Finally, to make the room truly original, go for storage that suits your style. Custom built, fitted storage can be expensive so choose standard-sized off-the-peg units or combine a simple set of shelves with free-standing storage such as trolleys, chests, cupboards or baskets. If you scour auctions, car boots sales and antique and collectable stores you may grab not only a bargain but also add a fashionably vintage vibe and heaps of personality.

TRICK To avoid the labour cost of removing old tiles and re-plastering the wall, OF THE it is often possible to tile over the existing tiles. This is a win-win on both TRADE! time and money for your bathroom transformation! 16

Do you DIY or get someone in? If you do some of the work yourself it will save money but know your limitations. Tiling and painting are straightforward and even some plastering and flooring can be tackled by a competent DIY-er. If necessary top up your skills by buying a good book, checking out online tutorials or signing up for an evening class. If in doubt, however, call someone in. Remember, that there are strict safety regulations controlling what work may be carried out by a non-professional, for instance with electrical work. Check with your local building control officer if you need more details. Fitting a new shower? Know your water supply system and make sure you choose a shower that will work with it. If your water pressure is low, for example, you’ll need to choose a type that can cope with this. Otherwise, you’ll have to install a pump as well. Fit a water-saving shower head at the same time, and you will save money and help the environment every time you use it.

GARDENS

Weed noun

1. a valueless plant growing wild, especially one that grows on cultivated ground to the exclusion or injury of the desired crop. 2. any undesirable or troublesome plant, especially one that grows profusely where it is not wanted

Waging War on Weeds

By Nikki Relffe-Arnold

One year’s seed is seven year’s weed

(Source: dictionary.com)

T

hough these are the dictionary definitions of a weed, ask any gardener, and you will get a different answer about their definition of a weed, but all will agree that they are a menace! In my garden, for instance, my Alchemilla Mollis, left unchecked, does indeed become a troublesome plant, especially when it overtakes and overshadows other plants in my beds. As can my wild geranium – but neither are traditionally classed as weeds! I occasionally, therefore, have to wage war on them to keep the peace in the beds! On the other hand, both plants help with keeping other weeds at bay because of their spreading nature – the geranium, in particular, is also good ground cover. But how do you deal with those other plants (weeds) that if left to their own devices will not only make your garden look untidy but may also be causing your other plants to suffer? There’s no one-size-fitsall answer, unfortunately, but

22

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

applying a multi-pronged attack will help: Weeds set seeds and multiply at an alarming rate unless they are dealt with promptly. The best way to do this if you are limited for time is to cut off its head before it has time to set seed. Be vigilant before planting, buying plants from a nursery, or moving plants from around the garden, make sure you don’t have any small seedling weeds on the surface of the compost or soil when planting. Failure to remove these tiny seedlings will multiply your weed problem in the coming weeks, months and years and will cause you no end of annoyance. Bindweed, nettles or couch grass have far-reaching underground stems, docks and dandelions have very strong roots that are hard just to pull-out. The only sure-fire way to get rid of all of these types of weed is to dig them out, which can be back-breaking work. It’s far better, than opting to use a rotovator to turn the ground over.

This will only result in the roots being chopped up and flung far and wide to resettle and re-grow. The hoe is still the gardener’s friend, keep it sharp and use on your plot regularly. If you have a large weedy area, cover with a couple of layers of wool carpet - it will need to be placed face down on the weeds and left for 18 months so that the weeds will die from lack of light. Unfortunately, the old gardener’s saying “One year’s seed is seven year’s weed” contains more than a grain of truth. So, unless you’re prepared to de-head, de-flower and de-root weeds, it’s probably best not to compost them; as you may find you could just be recycling them!

CHILDREN

Homework or Just Hard Work? Your guide to encouraging your child to do their homework – it’s about the right environment, setting boundaries and understanding the benefits By Shelley Welti

W

24

e’ve all heard those groans about homework from our children: ‘but it’s not due in until next week,’ ‘can I do it at the weekend instead?’ and the infamous ‘what’s the point?’ But with homework playing an important part in our child’s lives and development, it’s time to get into a healthy homework routine. If you’re struggling now we’re into September, and the new school term is in full swing, here’s some handy tips:

Allocate a space – be it a room or just a small area in the living room, kitchen or their bedroom, which is a peaceful place to absorb information. Set up a desk or table, stocked with a homework diary, pens, notebooks, a calculator and a dictionary, away from all distractions to keep your child focused during the designated time. If possible, have a homework chart, showing their progress and achievements to keep them engaged!

Create an inspirational environment You know your child best – how do they learn? What makes them tick? What gets their creative juices flowing? Do they absorb more by reading or through getting hands-on? By teaching and supporting them in a way that encourages the natural way in which they learn, it makes the homework experience a whole lot easier. Expand on this by creating a relaxing, yet stimulating working environment to encourage them further – it needn’t be difficult either!

Set those boundaries All parents know that children need boundaries, and it’s even more necessary when it comes to homework. It takes an average of 21 days to get into a new routine, so it’s key to enforce the homework boundaries as soon as you can so that it becomes almost second nature. If children know that after coming home, having a snack and chat about their day, that it’s then homework time, the routine can be quickly established. Be on-hand to help them, should they get stuck but also encourage them to learn, or to problem solve, by themselves.

Reward work well done Whether it’s doing an activity that they love or organising for a friend to come over for dinner, acknowledging the efforts and hard work put into homework time will further spur your child on! Use a homework chart or diary to set goals and discuss possible reward options for when they are complete. With the thought of playing football or going to ballet at the weekend, or having their best friend over, half an hour of homework doesn’t seem too bad!

LEISURE

Fun Abounds Indoors As we begin to switch our time from being spent in the great outdoors to indoors, here are some suggestions for activities to try this autumn. By Jacob White

If you’re looking for an indoor activity to keep you occupied this autumn in Surrey or Sussex, have you thought about our three B’s? Go on! It’s time to get out, get involved and get into a hobby this autumn!

Something for the sociable…

Bridge Contract bridge or bridge is a card-based game using a 52-card deck played by four players in two competing partnerships. The game is popular with millions worldwide as part of clubs, in tournaments and also online. Bridge stretches back to the 19th century and evolved into what we understand to be the present day game – it departed from the traditional game of whist and Biritch. Consisting of deals with each progressing through four phases, the game of bridge entails dealing the cards, the auction, or bidding, playing the cards, and finally scoring the results of the bridge contest. If you like a hobby where you can meet new people bridge is for you!

Something for the fun-seekers…

Bowls Similar to lawn bowls, the objective is to get as close to the jack as possible – the jack is a smaller ball which players take turns to aim for. The earliest known forms of bowling date back to Ancient Egypt and today it’s a popular sport throughout Britain and across the world. Played on strips of replica green often called a rink which is 40m long and 100m wide – it can be played in singles, doubles, triples and there also games in which teams of four players take part. An attraction of indoor bowls is its accessibility – it’s a game that can be played by all ages. If you like a hobby where you can have fun then bowls is for you.

Something for the energetic…

Badminton Most commonly played in either a singles or doubles format and all you require are a shuttlecock and racquet, and away you go! You’ll need a good level of aerobic stamina as well as good agility, high-end physical strength, fast-rate speed, great precision and hand-eye-co-ordination. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it in the opposition’s half of the court – each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes across the net in play. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor of the court, or a fault is called by either an umpire or by the opposing team. If you like a hobby which is high-energy then badminton is for you!

Tuesday - Friday from 9am - 7pm • Free Entrance • Free Parking • Free Guided Tours • Free Buffet Lunch For Groups of 10+ Reservations Necessary My name is Nick Palmer and I’m privileged to be the head gardener here at the London England Temple. I have worked in Horticulture all my adult life having served as an apprentice at Brighton Parks and Gardens. I was even helping to train gardeners for them at the Sussex Parks Training Centre. The gardens here at the Temple are some 28 acres excluding the buildings, and are a traditional English country garden with wonderful walks through the parkland. These walks vary from a small stroll around the Temple itself where we have traditional flower beds with spring and summer bedding displays to the magnificent Rhododendron walks which are breath taking when in flower in May. We have woodland walks with Bluebells, Wood Anemones, not to mention the trees, Oaks, Atlantic Ceders, Lime Trees, and Yew Trees, the list goes on. We are happy to cater for local school groups, youth organisations, senior citizen organisations, W.I’s, horticultural/gardening clubs, religious groups and any individuals with an interest of the above.
