The Gift Of Life
Receiving a gift is a wonderful thing, especially an unexpected one, but when the gift comes from a stranger, one who paid the ultimate price, that gift can be life-changing – literally. By Sarah Ballingal RH2 resident, Don Wootton, knows firsthand just what a difference organ donation can make. Two years-ago Don was seriously ill with lung disease and the prognosis was grim. He was under the care of the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital where he had received treatment throughout his illness but it had reached a stage where only a transplant could save him. Without any guarantee of suitable lungs becoming available, he could only wait as his condition worsened to a critical degree he was housebound, relying on an oxygen tank, and fearing the worst. Then, in February 2016 he received a call from the Harefield Hospital – compatible lungs were available, and he was to prepare for immediate surgery. A few days later after a bilateral lung transplant, Don began a steady recovery, and now he is back to playing his favourite sport - 18 holes of golf! Don’s recovery is still closely monitored by Harefield Hospital, and he cannot speak highly enough of their facilities and care. His health has improved so much that on Sunday, June 25 he was able to cycle 26 miles. He cycled along with his Team Wootton family as part of The Grand Canal Challenge, a marathon route cycled, run or walked by participants to raise money for the hospital. The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Trust is a world class facility known internationally for their expertise, standard of care and research success in the field of heart and lung disease. Like many trusts, it relies on donations to supplement its budget - the Harefield Hospital

hopes to raise £1.1 million to finance the building of six new rooms in the intensive care unit which will enable them to undertake an additional 250 life-saving operations each year. At the time of writing they are close to their aim and no doubt by now their supporters efforts will have helped achieve it - of course, it is not only financial help that the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Trust rely on. For their essential work to continue more donors are needed on the Organ Donor Register. It is a sensitive subject, not many of us like to consider our own mortality. However, it is a wonderful legacy to leave, that of providing someone under a life sentence with the chance of a reprieve.

Falling For You(th Clubs)
While many octogenarians might be hopping off the 430 bus to do a bit of shopping in Reigate, on Friday, August 18, 81-year-old David Powell will be jumping out of a plane at 30,000 feet to land in Memphis!
D
avid currently holds two HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) Skydiving World Records - as the first mayor in the world, and oldest person in the world to tandem skydive from this height. Free falling at 300mph for more than two minutes, HALO is used by special forces to drop unseen behind enemy lines. Memphis, in the USA is the only place in the world where civilians can be licensed to do this, and he will personally foot the bill. As a soldier of 25 years David is no stranger to excitement, and alongside his courageous career, his hobbies have included scuba diving and motor cross. He was spurred on to his first skydive when he heard of Essex’s Roy Woodward’s record-breaking leap at a mere 71-years-old. In 2014 when David was 78 he broke Roy’s record, jumping to mark the First World War centenary and the 70th anniversary of the death of his father who died in action in 1944.
By Sarah Ballingal
Plummeting to the ground at hundreds of miles an hour shakes him to bits, and David says: “When I did it the first time, I said to myself; ‘Thank God I haven’t got to do that again’. But you soon forget!” David completed his second jump last year raising £10,000 each time for the British Royal Legion. This year, his chosen cause is Surrey County Council’s youth club scheme in Redhill, Merstham and Horley. Each club night costs £6,000 a year to run, and they are an essential service for youngsters who might otherwise receive little support and encouragement in their personal lives. In a warm, friendly, family atmosphere the
clubs provide mentoring, training and guidance for teens, and along with games, crafts, dancing and cooking these help build confidence and self-esteem, even in the most diffident of characters. One young man describes worker, Mel, as “The loveliest lady I have ever met in my life!” At a time when life is especially hard for young people in our society, it is clear that these clubs fulfil an essential role in their lives and consequently, they need to be open for as many nights as possible. Unfortunately, they are currently only open for two to three nights a week, and David is passionate to see this increase, so all donations for his August skydive will go towards this provision. Although he launched the project in April with the hope that local companies and businesses would step up to support and sponsor this fantastic work sadly, there were no takers. David is now spreading his fundraising net further into the public arena with the hope that it will inspire residents to donate. How about you?

Daisy Does Her Bit For The Orpheus Centre In April, Daisy Hopson ran the Brighton 10k to raise money for the Orpheus Centre in memory of her brother, Mike. Mike Hopson had been a student at the centre and he would often say: “I don’t want to walk and talk; I want to sing and dance!” Mike passed away in 2007, but inspired by her brother’s life, Daisy now works at the Disabilities Trust in Sussex, said: “It seems like the right fit for something so close to my heart.” She completed the 10k in a one hour and three minutes and beat her original fundraising target of £250, with a total of more than £1,000.
Reigate School Participates In Cultural Project
Students from Dunottar School in Reigate have been participating in United Learning’s Access to Theatre – AcT programme, designed to bring together teachers, students and industry practitioners and widen access to professional theatre. The United Learning project is a collaboration of 12 secondary schools from across the state and independent sectors and is designed to broaden cultural experiences. This year, United Learning has partnered with Frantic Assembly, a renowned theatre company. Performing arts teachers from across United Learning came together in London and Manchester in January to train with Frantic Assembly, and this was followed by in-school workshops for students. The event, which starts at Priory Park each year, was named the Best Half Marathon With Fewer Than 5,000 Runners at a ceremony in April at the O2 Arena in London. Dave Kelly, one of the organisers, said: “We weren’t expecting to win. We were hoping but not expecting. We jumped out of our seats and were absolutely thrilled, shocked and delighted. It’s wonderful recognition for our team that has worked so hard.” Last year, the race saw 4,700 competitors take part, and through the runs since 2014, more than £500,000 has been raised so far for good causes. culminated in a collaborative showcase of events for students in London on Friday, April 21. Hope Blackstone, 13, said: “The best thing about the day was being able to perform the piece we had been working on in front of other schools and on a professional stage.” Dunottar’s Director of Drama, Tarani Ariyanayagam, added: “The project has been such an enjoyable experience. I have been thrilled with our students’ courage and tenacity in their approach to a new and a very physical style of theatre. The project was originally for key Stage 4 students, but we took along some additional Year 8s. As one of the youngest groups there, the pupils definitely held their own, and the feedback we received from everyone was extremely promising!”

By Jacob White
lly Murs is among the stars performing at Sandown Park this summer, following in the footsteps of last year’s stellar performances which included Bryan Adams, Jess Glynne and Busted. The 33-year-old Essex boy is the most successful male artist to come from TV talent show X Factor. With four number one singles to his name and the accolade of total record sales standing at in excess of 10 million. The open-air concert at Sandown Park will be an event that organisers call a special value-for-money
experience unlike any other as those in attendance will not only be able to see a show-stopping headlining performance from one of the world biggest stars but also a race day with a six race card – this is a great chance to see some of the finest performers in both the equine and musical fields. Sandown Park Racecourse was founded in 1875 and the course has gone on to provide the backdrop to some of the greatest moments in horse racing. Today, it is home to world-class customer facilities featuring an array of award-
winning restaurants catering for all tastes from fine dining to bistro food and is part of The Jockey Club group which itself welcomes more than two million visitors each year. Speaking about Olly Murs performance at the racecourse, London Region Director for Jockey Club Racecourses, Phil White, said: “We are really looking forward to having Olly Murs perform at Sandown Park Racecourse. Five Minutes With Murs
Ahead of his appearance at Sandown Park Racecourse, Olly Murs gave us his take on his music and the show.
For more information about Sandown Park Racecourse, visit: www.sandown.co.uk
What do you think has been the appeal to make you the most successful artists to have appeared on X Factor? Olly, said: “I’d like to think that I’ve done some great songs and, think people love what I do. The 24 Hrs album is probably the most heartbreaking, most honest album I’ve done but I think with previous albums you know I have a lot of fun, my albums are happy, still got lots of that vibe on it.” You have done a run of outdoor shows this summer, how do they vary in terms of what you put into them and what you get out of them, from the indoors to the outdoors? Olly, said: “It’s really fun being outside and you know the show that we’re doing at Sandown Park is a different gig for me, I’ve never done anything like this before, I’ve done racecourse gigs before in the past but not this sort of size. I can’t wait I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, I can go there during the day I can, have a flutter on a couple of the races and do a gig in the evening. Perfect.” Have you got any kind of pre-stage ritual that you perform before you go on? Olly, said: “Me and the band have a little huddle up before the show and we sing one of our songs, well not a song, a song that we’ve got as a team and we’ve been doing it for the last six/seven years so it’s a bit of a ritual but I’m sure we’ll be sinking a few shots before the show as well just to get into the racecourse spirit.”

Five Minutes with Mike Founder and Owner Mike Potts Why did you decide to get ISO accreditation? “The reason we decided to get accreditation is that although we receive a lot of customer testimonials and a high retention rate we couldn’t qualify this but an accreditation does. We want to take the next step to improving where we are and lead us to being a better business.”
What does the accreditation mean? “All of our business procedures from start to finish were independently audited by management system specialists CQS. The award recognises S4B Document Solutions commitment to an exceptional quality of service and customer focus as well as compliance.”

Remember Your Emission Sticker Are you planning a self-drive European holiday this summer? If you are driving in France and intend to visit Paris, you will need an emission sticker. By Ben Morley
Y
ou will no doubt remember last month that President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement on climate change. However, what you might not recall is hearing that you need to display a special sticker in your windscreen if you intend to drive your car through France’s capital city. The measures were announced at the end of 2016 as part of the country’s attempts to clean up the air quality after several days of extremely bad quality
air recorded last year. Use of these stickers, known as Crit’Air, is now in force, but if you were not aware that you should have one, and did not buy one you could be facing a fine of up to £117.00 for not doing so. Police have been advised to be lenient in the short term, these windscreen stickers can be ordered online, something you should be doing if you are considering driving through Paris at any time. The stickers cost £3.50 (around €4.00) and are broken down
into six categories ranging from full electric vehicles through to all-singing supercars and big diesel vehicles. What you need to know is, the website for buying the stickers is only in French at the moment, so you might be relying heavily on Google Translate if you want to buy one. However, there is talk of launching one for non-French speaking motorists this summer. Hopefully, this launch will take place by the time that you read this article.
Exemptions
If your car is older than 1997 you will not be allowed into Paris, Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 8.00pm. After these hours you can beat the system by driving through Paris, in an old car, without a sticker.

PET CARE
Keep Your Pets Safe From Pesticides To maintain the best garden sometimes, you need to use pesticides to ward off pests, but what can you do to keep your pets safe?
L
By Shelley Welti
et’s face it - come the summer, we all want our gardens to look like a botanical oasis and be bursting to life with beautiful flowers and luscious greenery. However, one thing any gardener does not want is their garden teeming with insects nibbling away at their handiwork, so many of us reach for the pesticides. Sadly, information from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service suggests that each year 11% of pet poisoning cases are caused by pesticides – so just how do we have both lovely gardens and healthy pets? This starts with careful, planned preparation before unleashing the pest control. As well as ensuring your pet is well away from the area, make sure that their toys, bowls and beds are removed too. Then, once you have used insecticides, do not allow your pet near the area until it is completely dry. In fact, it is worth trying to keep your pet away from the spot for the entire time you are using pesticides. If you are coating your lawn - dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs should all be kept off it for at least 24 hours, while the granules dissolve. These can be especially harmful, as they could look like a sneaky treat to pets. Check the granules have dissolved and that the area is dry before letting your pet back onto the grass. Baits for pests including rats, mice, slugs and snails need to be placed where pets cannot dig them up. As many are made with ingredients
In An Emergency
If you are worried your pet has potentially sniffed, licked or eaten pesticides, it is important to contact your vet straight away. If you can give them details of the pesticide - by the packaging, it will help your vet be able to treat your pet quickly. While it might be tempting to make your pet sick, before taking them to the vets, it can be more dangerous - let the vet assess the situation and treat your pet.
tempting for our pets to sniff out, it is easy for them to mistake them for hidden treats. Do not forget to hide the pesticides away once they have been used, and ensure packaging is securely closed and out of reach of furry paws. To eliminate the risks further, you could use natural insecticides such as a soap spray, which is a water and soap mix, and garlic spray.

The Best Of The Season’s Colours The summer is all about bright, lively and vibrant colours - your garden should be no different! We have a rundown of the bedding plants that can give your summer garden a serious splash of colour! By Jacob White
S
ummer bedding plants do not just have to be petunias and marigolds! As well as popular bedding plants you can choose from a large range of annual bedding plants. Here is our rundown of the bedding plants which can turn your garden from drab to delightful this summer! Sweet peas These make a fantastic cottage garden! Let the sweet peas scramble up obelisks or wigwams where they can reach heights of 1.8m (6”), or try dwarf sweet peas for groundcover at the front of beds and borders. With their rich and delightful fragrance, and wide range of colours, sweet peas are excellent summer bedding plants and can provide bunches of gorgeous fragrant cut flowers throughout summer! Antirrhinum Much-loved for their flowery spikes and long-flowering period, Antirrhinums have mouth-like flowers which open when squeezed. Available in a range of colours, snapdragon plants vary in height, from dwarf plants no taller than 25cm (10”) to large plants such as Antirrhinum Royal Bride which reach around 90cm (35”). Dwarf snapdragons can be used in borders and patio containers, and if you are looking for bedding plants that attract bees, Antirrhinums are a great source of nectar.

Begonia A versatile summer bedding plant, they are loved for their flamboyant and colourful blooms. They also boast an ability to thrive in both sun and shade. Flowering throughout the summer and up to the first frosts, they can be upright or trailing and are suitable for beds, hanging baskets and window boxes. Californian poppy This annual is sown directly in beds and borders, and will happily self-seed and create colour year after year. Traditionally orange, there is now a plethora of colours including yellow and red. The blooms are borne above blue-green foliage, and are attractive to bees. Thriving in dry soil, simply scatter the seeds where you want them to flower and they take care of themselves. Cosmos The saucer-shaped flowers are a source of late nectar for pollinating insects. The Cosmos’ fern-like foliage adds texture to bedding schemes and works well in an informal cottage-style bed or border. These summer plants are available in shades of pink, red and white with Cosmos Sulphureus offering yellow, orange and red. Cosmos plants begin blooming in mid-summer and flower until autumn.

Understanding Autism
Did you know that approximately one in 88 people in the UK could have autism? Meaning more than 750,000 people are autistic and that 2.8m people have a relative on the autism spectrum. How do you know if your child is autistic, and if that is the case, where can you find help and support? By Shelley Welti
A
utism is a developmental condition that affects the way that individuals with autism interact with other people and how they perceive the world around them. Those with autism see, hear and feel day-to-day life differently than those without the condition, often finding things overwhelming, leading to anxiety. Each individual on the autistic spectrum has autism specific to them, meaning one person can be different to the next. Certain difficulties include not being able to socially communicate with others, or offer empathy, need routines and having obsessive behaviour. However, it can manifest in different people in different ways, and some may have learning difficulties or mental health issues too. Autism is a lifelong condition, usually diagnosed in childhood and early adulthood with no cure, but that does not mean that those diagnosed cannot lead a fulfilling, independent life. Today, more adults are now being diganosed with autism. Does My Child Have Autism? If you think your child may have autism, it is best to speak with your health visitor, doctor, or school nurse about your concerns. The main characteristics of autism in children are - difficulties with social communication, such as not being able to interpret gestures, tone of voice and sarcasm correctly, social interaction issues, including the inability to ‘read’ people’s feelings, with them appearing insensitive or not behaving in a way thought to be ‘socially acceptable’, a need for repetitive routines, due to finding the world an unstable and unpredictable place, children with autism may need a strict daily routine, so they know what to expect.

Some autistic children may find they experience high-sensitivity to sounds, tastes, light, temperature or pain, which those without autism may not even notice. This can cause further anxiety and even physical pain. Your doctor can then refer you to specialists who can help you with a diagnosis and offer support. Identification earlier in life can save frustration for those with the condition. It can also help family, friends and teachers, understand the difficulties experienced and how to cope. On-going Support As well as doctors and specialists other organisations and charities including The National Autistic Society, Anna Kennedy Online and Autism Sussex offer help and advice. Autism Support Crawley (www.autismsupportcrawley.co.uk) is a support group for parents and carers caring for someone with autism. It offers the opportunity for loved ones to meet and share their experiences.

HEALTH
Do You Fear The Dentist? Most people will say they do not look forward to a dental appointment but for some there is a deep feeling of anxiety and fear which is keeping them away – in fact, a British Dental Health Foundation survey found that for 36% of those who did not see a dentist regularly, fear was the number one reason. By Jacob White
D
o you, or does someone you know, suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia? Some people with the condition are putting themselves at risk of serious illness with a higher risk of gum disease and early tooth loss. There are professional out there to help even the most nervous to say “argh!” no more.
Causes Pain Of those who had not seen a dentist for 12 months, 6% reported fear of pain; this fear is common in those aged 40 or older as their early visits to the dentist were at a time before advances in dentistry. Helplessness and loss of control Like many phobias about situations there is often a feeling for a sufferer that they have no control of a situation. They sit still in a dentist chair and feel unable to predict what is going to happen next. Embarrassment The mouth is an intimate part of the body; people can feel ashamed or embarrassed by having a stranger looking inside. This may be a problem if you are self-conscious about the look of your teeth.
Symptoms
There is not a clearly defined boundary separating anxiety and phobia, everyone has fears and concerns and copes in different ways. However, some of the signs of dental phobia include: • You feel tense or have trouble sleeping before a visit to the dentist
What To Expect On A Dental Visit
If you have not been to a dentist for some time, they will want to take a full health history. On follow-up visits if your health status changes tell your dentist. Here is what to expect on a visit: Thorough Clean A dental hygienist or dentist will remove built-up plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other oral health problems. Dental Examination Your dentist will perform an examination of your teeth, gums and mouth, looking for problems. X-Rays These can diagnose problems otherwise unnoticed, such as damaged jawbones and tumours.
Ways To Ease Fear
• Find an understanding dentist – ask friends and family for recommendations • Pick an appointment early in the morning so you have less time to dwell on it
• You get increasingly nervous in the waiting room
• Take a friend with you – a dentist won’t mind if they accompany you on your visit
• The sight of dental instruments and nursing staff increases your anxiety
• Agree a sign with the dentist to signal that you need a break and want them to stop
• You panic or have trouble breathing when objects are placed in your mouth
• Take a personal listening device to listen to music which can help you relax
Sedation Clinics: If you are visiting a dentist and need treatment, ask your dentist whether they offer a form of sedation. If they cannot offer sedation they can refer you to a sedation clinic. The sedation clinics are specifically for nervous dental patients. They can provide either inhalation sedation through a small mask or an injection into your hand or arm – you will be awake during treatment but you will be calm throughout and you probably will not be able to remember the treatment!

The Complimentary View Here is my next monthly contribution where I answer some of the many questions that are put to me as a Chiropractor. If there are any questions readers might have about Chiropractic or Holistic health in general, I am only too pleased to do my best to answer them, if you would like to contact me at christopherhamp@aol.com.
Is good posture important? I can answer this question in three words! Yes, yes and yes! It is almost impossible to emphasise enough how important good posture is to spinal health and to health in general. The way we stand and sit has significant bearing on so many aspects of our lives. Many of us have lifestyles which involve prolonged periods of being static, whether sitting at a desk or in a car, or standing still at some other activity. In an ideal world, we should be moving around as our ancestors did, however, modern life can make this difficult.

When our spines or other joints are static and also weight bearing, there is little joint friction, which means that synovial fluid (our natural joint lubricant) is not being produced and our joints effectively ‘dry up’ and become stiff. It is essential, therefore that as little strain as possible is put upon the joints when still and this means that they should be, as far as possible, in a neutral position. Standing and sitting correctly is the best possible way to achieve this.
“In an ideal world, we should be moving around as our ancestors did, however, modern life can make this difficult” Good posture seems to come naturally to some people, but others seem to have to work harder to achieve it. Factors such as age, occupation, weight, self esteem, pregnancy, foot and ankle problems, bone density and genetics can all have an adverse effect on posture, however, this can be minimised with good advice on lifestyle, exercises and appropriate treatment.

It seems that the secret to having good posture is mainly dependent upon having good control of your postural muscles, in particular the so-called ‘core’ muscles. The best way to do this is, I believe, to join a Pilates class. This will teach you to strengthen and to use these important muscles correctly and help you to have great posture. Just about every facet of your health will benefit either directly or indirectly from having good posture. If you are in any doubt as to if you need to make some changes, try this simple test - take off as many clothes as you dare, stand in front of a full length mirror, sideways on. If you like what you see then all is well and good. If not, it’s time to make some changes!
