Welcome to our June issue
It’s been a busy month in the RH Uncovered office!
The launch of our community website couldn’t have gone any better. We are so pleased with the response we have received from both our advertisers and the public. Thank you to all that have logged on, shared our posts and entered our exclusive competitions. If you haven’t yet visited take a look on www.rhuncovered.co.uk Last month we were lucky enough to be invited to the Gatwick Diamond Business Association awards, held at the stunning Effingham Park Hotel. After the awards we met a young man called Sam French from Gingerbread Sam. So taken were we with Sam’s story, Shelley, our community writer met with him to learn more about his gingerbread antics and we are happy to announce that Sam is now a part of the RH team! Keep an eye on the website for his first post. Featuring 75 vehicles that epitomise the very essence of motoring design, technology, style and culture from the past to the present, the Roundel Run is part “rally” and part “motor show” and will be passing through a village near you, on Saturday 13th June before ending up at the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight. We meet the organisers of the Roundel Run and have the all the details of the event so you don’t miss a thing. In June the WI celebrate their 100th year anniversary and to commemorate this we got in touch with some of the WI groups in the area. Read about the world famous institution and how they have grown and adapted to modern life. We uncover the local National Gardens Scheme that’s now in its 88th year and has so far raised almost £23 million pounds for charity, and find out what’s going on at the St Barnabas Flower festival. Shelley also chats to the Crawley Flamingoes Swimming club about the benefits of swimming and the good work they do in the local community. All that and the usual what’s on listings, recipe, garden advice and tips for the home. Enjoy your read and don’t forget to tell our advertisers where you saw them.

The 100th year anniversary of the
Women’s Institute I
n 1915 the first Women’s Institute was formed to revitalise rural communities, but also to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Although their aims have changed, today, there are more than 6,500 Women’s Institute branches across Britain, hosting around 212,000 members.
The great British institution is reinventing itself. Their aims have broadened. They are the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK and local groups still play a very unique role in providing women with opportunities, a chance to build skills, take part in activities, and also to campaign on issues that really matter to them and their communities. Here at RH Uncovered we were keen to see how, 100 years on, the WI operates in our communities today… “I feel that the WI is so popular nationwide these days because women feel they can get together with joint interests, make friends and in some cases make a difference,” Shirley Morris from Maidenbower’s WI tells us. “There’s the opportunity to learn crafts which in the past would have been passed down from mother/grandmother and are no longer being passed on, as most women work these days, but are regaining popularity amongst the younger generations.”
Many of the local members (including Shirley!) also enjoy campaigning to improve lives of fellow residents:
“Personally I like a good campaign! Our Minutes Secretary and I are embarking on a campaign to try to get the parking fees reduced in Crawley hospital; particularly for the chronically sick. We’re also hoping to get the mobility store reinstated in to Crawley town centre - I have needed a scooter to get around and there isn’t a mobility shop to hire one from as it has shut down!” This month not only marks the centenary celebrations of the start of the women’s institute, but also the Maidenbower group’s 21st birthday too! “We are holding a Street Party to celebrate the centenary and will be inviting other WI groups in the area,” The group’s Secretary continues. “On 24th June, it’s our 21st birthday and Tony the Magician is coming to visit us during our monthly meeting!” We wish the Maidenbower WI and our other local WI members a happy month of celebrations!
The group who meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month in Maidenbower Junior School’s Dining Hall at 7:30pm, currently has thirty five members who enjoy varied meetings with demonstrations, speakers, quizzes, refreshments and competitions.

Glorious
Gardens Open for Charity
W
hat can be more perfect than spending a lazy summer’s day, outside in the sunshine, amongst some truly beautiful gardens? This month, we’re uncovering local gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme, now in its 88th year, all hoping to raise money, through small admission fees and selling refreshments for seven charities. In the last ten years alone, almost £23 million has been donated, by the nationwide scheme to charities; Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, The Queen’s Nursing Institute and Perennial, as well as yearly guest charities - this year’s chosen charity is Parkinson’s UK. How Does It Work? Just turn up to your preferred local garden/s, pay a small entry fee (usually less than £5.00 per person) and enjoy! Many green-fingered gardeners will also be selling homemade refreshments too – so why not make a day of it?

“What could be more quintessentially English than to visit gardens lovingly cared for by so many people but with the same aim in mind - to raise money for charity?” Adrian Skeates, Publicity Officer for West Sussex NGS, asks. “The gardens are all different; some small, others large. These garden gems are sometimes hidden away, often in the most unexpected places. The owners or gardeners are happy to talk with you about their gardens. Many of which also have the added bonus of delicious home-made teas!” Just some of the nearby glorious gardens that will be opening their gates this month include: Sunday 7th June (1-5pm) – High Beeches Woodland and Garden, Handcross, RH17 6HQ. Saturday 13th June (12-5pm) – Balcombe Gardens, Balcombe, RH17 6JJ. Tuesday 23rd & Saturday 27th June (1.30-5.30pm) – Luctons, West Hoathly, RH19 4PP. Find more local gardens taking part between now through to September by visiting: www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/find-a-garden

A Splashing Success!
R
unning since 1964, Crawley Flamingoes Swimming Club has enabled many local residents with a variety of physical disabilities including visual impairment, loss of limbs and MS, to enjoy swimming in a safe and secure environment.
The group, which is open to swimmers aged 18 and over (and has even supported mature members in their early 90’s!) meets every Tuesday between 7:45-8:45pm at Crawley’s K2, and provides members with the opportunity to meet others and enjoy the health benefits of swimming in a non-competitive atmosphere. “Swimming is widely recognised as a very beneficial form of exercise and it is the aim of the club to make the swimming pool at the K2 Leisure Centre available to people regardless of their disability,” the club’s chairman, Kevin Ford says. “My involvement with the club started in the mid 70's when I was asked if I would join as a helper to support both the swimming and non-swimming members in the water.
Flower Festival G reen-fingered residents are being asked to think about the part they play in their community (and creatively make a fabulous floral arrangement expressing this!) for St Barnabas’ Flower Festival taking place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June.
“Barnabas means “son of encouragement” and as such, we felt it would be fitting for “Community” to be the theme of our flower festival, encouraging many different community groups as possible to take part,” organiser Jane Stanford tells us. “We would like groups or individuals to create an arrangement showcasing the part they play within the community, as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations.” The Flower Festival at the Pound Hill parish comes after the success of a similar event in 2013 at St Nicholas Church and hopes to bring local residents together over the flower-filled weekend.

It soon became obvious to me how much the members enjoyed and benefited from their weekly swims and it was for that reason I have remained a member of the club.” Flick, a disabled swimmer, who works with the Hypermobility Syndromes Association tells us: "It's such an important resource - people with disabilities can have trouble accessing public swimming for many reasons, yet for most people with life-long conditions, exercise is key to selfmanagement. The club means that even on bad days, for an hour once a week, I can be certain I'll be able to access the pool." If you would like to join the group, just turn up to the next Tuesday meeting, from 7:45pm at K2 Leisure Centre!
“The flower festival is an opportunity for groups and individuals alike to take part in a community event and at the same time promote their business/organisation or just their love of working with flowers,” Jane continues. “The event is not primarily a fundraiser, the emphasis being on coming together to celebrate the anniversary and admission will be by donation. Any monies raised will go towards replacing the windows of the church. There will be a raffle, any donations towards this would be most gratefully accepted.” The church, on Worth Road, will be open on Friday 5th June for people to go along and create their arrangements. Refreshments will also be available. For further information contact Jane on: 01293543065.

T
he Biggin Hill Festival of Flight has always been an event to look forward to, and to remember. This year, however, it’s going to be bigger than ever.
Originally, and successfully, a motor-racing circuit, Brooklands became home to the Hawker Hurricane and Vickers Wellington, which were built there for the war effort.
Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, in which RAF Biggin Hill played a crucial role, the Festival will be pulling out all the stops to ensure a memorable and befitting event.
The first checkpoint is Bell and Colvill. Bobby (Bell) and Martin (Colvill) have sold cars together from their West Horsley premises for 40 years. Successful amateur racing drivers, they met through a mutual passion for motorsport and the legendary British Lotus marque, then at the height of Formula 1 success.
During the war the Aerodrome hosted the front line of defence against enemy bombers, with RAF fighters downing 1,400 Luftwaffe aircraft, from its runways alone. So naturally the air show will be spectacular. There will be fighter planes galore, including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mustangs and a Messerschmitt Me109. But it doesn’t end there. The Festival also hosts an impressive ground display, both of aircraft and historical or military vehicles. However, this year’s static car display comes with a twist, thanks to a new part of the Festival called The Roundel Run. As much as Biggin Hill played a part in the Battle of Britain, so did many other locations across Surrey, Sussex and Kent. The inaugural Roundel Run aims to recognize their achievements as well. The Roundel Run is part ‘rally’ and part ‘motor show’. It will feature 75 vehicles that epitomise the very essence of motoring design, technology, style and culture; from the past to the present. It starts under Concorde, at Brooklands Museum; the home of British motorsport and aviation.

Along the way the route takes in the towns of Dorking and Reigate, with the latter being a key target during the war. One might surmise that this was because General Sir Bernard Montgomery, Land Commander of the 21st Army, had his HQ based in the large houses on Reigate Hill. Next up is Horley, home to Donald Campbell CBE, who broke 13 world speed records in the 1920s and 30s in his famous Bluebird cars and boats. The Run makes its way along the twisty roads of Turners Hill, on to East Grinstead, for a flying visit to the McIndoe Surgical Centre. Founded by Sir Archibald McIndoe, the Centre is famous for its legendary ‘Guinea Pig Club’. This was made up of patients, particularly RAF pilots and crew who, after receiving burn injuries in aircraft, needed experimental reconstructive plastic surgery for very deep burns and serious facial disfigurement. The Guinea Pig Club was the result of McIndoe’s efforts to make life in the hospital easier for his patients and to begin to rebuild them psychologically in preparation for life outside the hospital.

The next stop is Edenbridge, which hosted many evacuees during WW2. However it is probably most famous for its relationship with the Surtees family. John Surtees OBE, Formula 1 world champion in 1964, started Surtees Racing Management in the town in 1970 which resulted in the likes of F1 stars Mike Hailwood, Jochen Mass and 1980 Australian F1 World Champion Alan Jones becoming regular visitors to the towns’ motorsport factory. The Run then passes by the entrance to Chartwell House, the much-loved Churchill family home and the place from which Sir Winston drew inspiration from 1924 until the end of his life. During the Second World War, the house was mostly unused. Its relatively exposed position, in a county so near across the English Channel to German occupied France, meant it was potentially vulnerable to a German airstrike or commando raid. On passing the historic green with the Winston Churchill statue, in Westerham, the Roundel Run finishes the rally part of the day with a parade in front of the capacity crowd of 18,000 visitors, coming to a stop at the Festival Arena, where the motor show begins. In addition to educating and entertaining the Roundel Run will be raising money for four worthy charities; the RAF Benevolent Fund, the Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance, Make a Wish Foundation UK and Brooklands Museum. Falafel, Pepper And Goat’s Cheese Salad
If you’re having veggie friends around for lunch or just fancy a meat-free supper for a change this colourful salad will fit the bill. Falafels are small Middle Eastern deep-fried patties made with cooked chick peas. You can buy them ready-made in most supermarkets or deli’s but they are really easy to make at home with just a can of chick peas and a few store cupboard ingredients. For an on-the-go salad pack into warmed pitta breads.
Serves 4, Ready in 30 minutes 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 4 tbsp freshly chopped parsley or coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp chilli powder 2 tbsp plain flour Salt and freshly ground black pepper Oil for shallow frying 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced
1 yellow pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced 2 tbsp olive oil 150g bag mixed salad leaves Half a small iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded 150g goats’ cheese, roughly crumbled FOR THE DRESSING 6 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp white wine vinegar ½ tsp Dijon mustard
1. To make the falafel, place the chick peas, garlic, parsley or coriander, spices and flour in a food processor and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Process for about 1 minute until you have a fairly smooth mixture. Turn into a bowl then divide and shape the mixture into 12 small patties with clean wetted hands. 2. Shallow fry the patties in hot oil for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 3. Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foil-lined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places. 4. Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers. Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese. 5. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately. Tip: Add a handful of fruity black or green olives to the salad or sprinkle with some lightly toasted pine nuts to give an extra Mediterranean flavour.

any of us dream of running our own business and becoming renowned in our chosen field, but for Sussex resident Sam French, that dream has quickly become a reality – already winning Gatwick Diamond’s Young Start-Up Talent, having his quirky gingerbread bakes featured in Vogue magazine and even becoming a motivational speaker, inspiring fellow young entrepreneurs; all before he turned twenty-three years old.
Sam, who won a prize worth £50,000 from the Young Start Up awards in 2013, was inspired to bake his way to success whilst on a trip to Selfridges with his grandad – even though he couldn’t actually bake at the time: “I went into London to have lunch with my grandad. I hadn’t even been in there before, but had wanted to go. After trying some gingerbread I remember thinking: this is one of the best stores in the world, but I’m sure I can do better, so I started baking!” It took Sam a little over a year to perfect his gingerbread men (and women) and it wasn’t long before he was supplying both local and national businesses; including British Airways, winning over the Gatwick Diamond judges and motivating others with the story behind his London Fashion Week influenced collection and personalised bakes.
“I’ve always been someone who wants to do whatever I’m doing to the best of my ability,” Sam, who founded Sam’s Kitchen at just sixteen, tells us. “Whether that was selling second-hand toys (as the Crawley resident starting doing when he was just five, at his dad’s stall) or selling gingerbread men, I think it’s important to really love and enjoy what you do.”
“It’s been so exciting,” the young entrepreneur continues, “I’ve met some really inspirational people – including the founder of British retailer Jack Wills, which was amazing! You only live once, if there’s something you want to do, why not give it a go? “You’ll never know otherwise!”
We’re pleased to announce that Sam will be joining the RH Uncovered team, showcasing the talents of fellow business owners in our local area – pop over to www.rhuncovered.co.uk to check out his latest blog!

The Half Moon Inn has stood in the middle of Balcombe village since the 1800s. There are many stories of the cellar being haunted, secret passageways underneath the road, and of all of the families that have lived above The Half Moon over the years.
In January 2015 the exciting news came that The Half Moon Inn had been voted Best Pub in Sussex 2014, and just a few weeks later featured in Sussex Life magazine as one of the Top 20 Cosy Winter Pubs in Sussex.
There are some things we know for certain - The Half Moon Inn has always been the centre of much local activity, where regulars and visitors alike can come and enjoy the combination of food, drink and live music.
All year round we have a wonderful mix of customers - locals, visitors, ramblers, families, children and dogs. Whether it’s a catch up with friends, a family celebration, or a quiet pint after work; we cater for everyone. Check out the events page to find out more.
The space outside on the corner of the pub known as the “pig pen” is where customers would leave their livestock when they came into the pub.
In the summertime the “pig pen” is a great place to catch the sunshine and have a jug of Pimms, and in the wintertime it is home to the village Christmas tree - organised by none other than the Balcombe Christmas Tree Society.
If you visit The Half Moon Inn now, you’ll meet Michaela Lea Strahan - or Micki to her friends. She took over the management of the pub in the summer of 2013, and in eighteen short months she and team have won the hearts of all who visit.
A warm welcome and a fantastic menu awaits - come and see for yourself! The Half Moon Inn, Haywards Heath Road, Balcombe, West Sussex, RH17 6PA

Bring Me Add extra space, make the most of precious sunshine and bring the garden into your house. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory.
Kit or bespoke? Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and predrilled ready for installation. If you choose a bespoke design you’ll pay a great deal more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Remember that unless a conservatory is well finished and appropriate to your property, it may detract from rather than add to its value. Size, siting and aspect A simple plant room or occasional-use home office can be squeezed into quite a small space, but for a useable room such as a sitting room, dining room or playroom, allow at least eight to ten metres of floor area. Overall, ensure that the proportions of your conservatory suit how you’re going to live in it and complement your property and garden.
Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, in a colour and style that matches or complements that of the main house. More recently, however, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and is often made to stock lengths so it can be system-built quickly and easily. It isn’t an environmentally friendly choice, however, and its modern look can be inappropriate for a period property. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance.
How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? If possible, try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat.

Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential to reduce heat loss from a conservatory at any time other than mid-summer. The best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argon-gas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth. Heating Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You may wish to place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either of the warm-water pipe or electric cable variety, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue it is perfectly possible to install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house. Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need to be able to provide a cool waft of air in your conservatory. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open at the necessary time, with a sensor to close them if it starts to rain. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan.
Shading Not just necessary for privacy, blinds also provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If the latter is a problem, your best bet is solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. The blinds you choose will have an enormous impact on the style of the room as a whole, so take your time choosing a look that’s right for you. Remember to ask how easy it is to clean your chosen blinds, and consider whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission? Many small, domestic conservatories don’t need planning permission, but there are conditions. For further information, look at www.planningportal.gov.uk and consult your local planning authority.

Bugs and Beetles Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids
Woodlice
Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary.
Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures.
•
Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide
•
Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues
•
Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage
Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. •
Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning.
•
Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control.
•
Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer.
•
Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh.
Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis. Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too.
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com where you can sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh, Envirofleece and a hand-picked selection of garden products

Make one call, and make the difference It’s Foster Care Fortnight, so if you’ve ever considered fostering, now is a great time to contact West Sussex County Council’s Fostering Recruitment Team.
F
oster Care Fortnight (1st to 14th June) is an annual event which recognises the significant commitment foster carers across the UK make in supporting vulnerable children who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to live at home. It also provides an ideal time to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers to come forward. The Fostering Network recently announced that in 2015 around 8,000 more foster carers are needed across the UK to meet the needs of children in care. In West Sussex, the County Council estimates that between 60 and 80 new foster carers must be found this year. There are different ways to foster, from offering short term or emergency support to offering a longer term home, or providing short breaks for children with disabilities. West Sussex County Council particularly needs people who could give a loving home to siblings or older children, and those with disabilities. For the children who have benefited from being part of a foster family, it really can make a huge difference. Claire came into care following a particularly turbulent time at home and has now been with the same foster family – who also have younger children of their own - for two years. She is aiming to start her A levels later this year and hopes to go on to university.
Claire credits her foster family with supporting her in all aspects of her life. “Everything’s changed. I’m a lot happier, I have grown in confidence and I am doing better in school.” This change is something that many foster carers cite as one of the most rewarding parts of their role. Graham and Sarah have been fostering for 10 years and during that time have helped 38 young people. Sarah says: “It is a privilege to be able to support children through a difficult time in their lives. I would encourage anyone thinking about fostering to take those first steps to find out more.” Foster carers come from all walks of life. The only thing they have in common is a spare room, patience and the ability to offer a stable and nurturing environment. If this sounds like you, West Sussex County Council would love to hear from you. You can call the Fostering Recruitment team for an informal chat on 0330 222 7775, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering or text FOSTER to 82228 to receive a call back.
The Fostering Roadshow is visiting a town near you!
Come and chat to current West Sussex foster carers and speak to the Council’s Fostering Recruitment Team, who will be in your area at the following times and locations: The Orchards Shopping Centre, Haywards Heath – Monday 8th June, 10am–3pm Queens Square, Crawley – Wednesday 10th June, 10am-3pm Carfax, Horsham – Friday 12th June, 10am-3pm

Five ways to boost your confidence this summer With summer fast approaching the thought of shedding off those layers of clothes can terrify us. Here’s some top tips to help you blossom this Summer.
• Firstly how about shedding all those negative thoughts about how you look. It’s time to spring clean those thoughts. Rather than starting from a point of ‘I wish I was’, start from ‘this is where I am, how can I move forward?’. As you head along the journey clear out the excess. How many of you keep clothes in their wardrobe ‘just in case’. You are already telling yourself you're likely to fail. As you open your wardrobe this summer see the clothes of the future, not the past. • Secondly, the key to dieting and healthy eating is listening to our bodies. Imagine balancing all the unhealthy food we eat in one hand and all the nutritious healthy foods in the other. Can you imagine what each hand would look like? Junk food sticking to one hand, running down your fingers, a mix of sticky ingredients. Against the natural foods, the fresh fruits and vegetables, with every colour of the rainbow catered for. I know which one is more appealing to me. If you are not sure or want some guidance, we have so many nutritionists available locally these days.
50
/RHUncovered
• Thirdly and just as importantly is hydration. Our bodies are made up of over 70% water. If you’re dehydrated this is a form of negative stress on the body. • Tip four is exercise. When you exercise you release a feel good chemical into the body. So not only are you burning off energy, you’re releasing that feel good chemical in you. • Finally but just as important, sleep… no I’m not hypnotising you! A lack of sleep can cause us to lose focus and make mistakes, which is turn can undermine our confidence. So how to spring into Summer confidently? Look after number one. Take time to relax. Have a massage. Treat yourself to a relaxing hypnotherapy session. Fuel your body with energising natural fuel. Why not grow vegetables? Then not only do you get the energy, you get the exercise looking after them. So shoulders back, a smile on your face and make this Summer your most confident one ever. Becky Wells, www.beckywells.com Personal Development Hypnotherapist www.payitforwarduk.net
What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes. A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been staring straight at the screen. Alternatively it’s the car journey where you wonder how you got to a certain place. Your mind is on auto-pilot and must have been in control, otherwise there would probably have been an accident. What can hypnotherapy help with? • Agoraphobia • Anxiety • Blushing • Confidence Building • Depression • Fears and Phobias • Gambling • Guilt • Habits and Compulsions • IBS • Insecurity • Insomnia • Memory Recall • Nail biting • Nervousness • Pain Control • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Panic Attacks • Public Speaking • Smoking • Stress Management • Timidity • Trauma • Weight Problems • Worry

(Paper)
Licence to Kill I
f you, like me, begrudgingly gave up your paper driving licence in favour of one of the photocard examples back in 1998 (yes, it really was that long ago), you would have found some small comfort in the fact that you got to retain a paper counterpart. There is just something about that moth-eared, multiplefolded, piece of green paper that appeals to the luddite in me. A refusal to accept the inevitable fate that awaits us all – everything is going to end up smaller and/or on computer. Having the paper counterpart in my wallet, as illegible as it is now that it’s been through the wash several times, not to mention being used as a wedge to stop the table down the pub wobbling, is strangely reassuring. It’s a passport to a time when life seemed much simpler, even though it probably actually wasn’t. But, as much as it pains me to admit it, it’s going to happen, paper is going to lose out in favour of digital information. There is no stopping the perpetual march of progress. Remember the Brittanica Encyclopedia salesmen that were everywhere in the 90’s? When was the last time you saw one of them? Or even an Encyclopedia? Everything you ever need to know (and a lot of things that you don’t) is available on the internet – like, for example, the fact that in the UK, operating a cow or steam engine whilst intoxicated carries a prison sentence. Imagine, then, my dismay at the news that my passport to a time when chicken really tasted like chicken, and cheese didn’t crumble when you cut it, is being phased out. As of the 8th June 2015 the paper counterpart for your driving licence is no longer valid, or issued by the DVLA.
any endorsements or penalty points that you might have accrued, as well as indicating what type of vehicle you are legally allowed to drive. So the next time you hire a vehicle, or are going for a new job, there will no longer be that awkward moment in time when you have to explain away that SP40 crudely scrawled on the back, in biro, after presenting them with the paper counterpart. From the 8th of June, any information that would previously have been on that green bit of paper, will now be recorded digitally and available to share with the relevant parties via a special code obtained by you from the GOV.UK website. Or for the recalcitrant amongst us, there is the option to do it by phone by calling 0300 083 0013. The code will last for 72 hours each time you request it, and will allow you to share the finer details of your driving license with hire companies or prospective employers. In reality, all this really means to you or I is that we can rip up the paper bit and throw it in the bin on 8th June, as it will mean nothing after that date. The DVLA claim it’s part of their plan to simplify their services; though if you’ve bought or sold a car that was taxed recently, you might raise an eyebrow to that one. However, with all of that said, if you still haven’t updated to a photocard driving licence anyway, you get to keep that chewed-up, dog-eared, paper licence safe and sound in your wallet, and pretend none of this has ever happened. By Ben Morley
Maybe, though, it’s a good thing. The counterpart existed in the first place as a means of recording

RH Uncovered: Case Study Becky Wells, Health and Wellness
Client:
Becky Wells is a health and wellness expert, specialising in hypnotherapy and personal fitness. Becky approached us in 2013 regarding the possibility of featuring her services in the RH Uncovered magazines having been drawn to the wealth of expert articles that we carry each month. Becky’s enthusiasm for her profession led us to invite her to become a regular contributor to our Health and Wellbeing section. Here she tells us why she chose RH Uncovered magazines. 1) Why did you decide to advertise your business with RH Uncovered magazines in the first place? When I first set up my hypnotherapy practice I knew that I wanted to work with my local community. I knew I had to advertise myself but with so many local publications around I didn’t know which way to go. My practice is based within the RH10 postcode and so I was getting and reading a copy of the magazine each month. I loved the local content and editorial in the magazine and decided to give the team a call.

6 months down the line I am still receiving a high number of calls quoting the magazine. The calls are consistent throughout the month and the number of calls I receive each month is growing.
and the quality of calls I get have made my advertising decision an easy one.
The team have remained supportive throughout. I have regular contact with them. They are always there to help and advise me on my next month’s campaign. I have found working with them completely stress free and professional and this has left me free to carry on working in my now very busy practice.
I am coming to the end of my contract with the magazine and I am excited to meet with Nikki, Carly and the team to discuss renewing my contract with them. I have some exciting things coming up in my business and sharing this news with their readers makes sense.
3) Why would you choose the RH Uncovered titles I arranged to meet with Nikki over a coffee and I was impressed over other magazines you have used? at how much interest Nikki showed in my business. She I often hear people commenting advised me on the best way to spend my budget and supported on the magazine as a reliable source of local information. me through my first campaign It’s trusted, it’s read and the and even came up with some reliable distribution means I great ideas on how my advert should look and read. know that my advert is being seen by the people that I want 2) How successful would you to attract to my business. say that your campaign with I always leave copies in my the RH Uncovered magazines clinic and it’s a great talking point and icebreaker between has been? myself, and my clients. The response from my campaign The results I have seen in the growth of my business has been overwhelming.

4) What does the future hold for your relationship with RH Uncovered magazines.
The growing popularity of the magazine in the Haywards Heath area means that I can grow my business with them. Alongside my hypnotherapy business I run ‘pay it forward UK’, we spoke to Shelley about the project and ran an article in their community section. Again I had response and interest on the back of this article. This shows the magazine is read cover to cover and I am proud to be a contributor to the magazine.
