Rebecca’s Capital Punishment One Turners Hill resident isn’t letting her osteopenia condition halt her marathon ambitions as she prepares to pound the capital’s streets to raise money for the National Osteoporosis Society. By Jacob White

R

ebecca Howells, an orthopaedic nurse and hip fracture specialist nurse at East Surrey Hospital is running one of the world’s premier marathons. Motivated both professionally and personally she will dual with tens of elite athletes and thousands of fun-runners from across the UK and abroad. In December 2015 Rebecca who has osteopenia fractured her left leg badly which required more than four hours of surgery as her leg was jigsaw puzzled back together as her consultant described, with pins and plates. Although, not her first fracture, this was by far the worst she sustained. Osteopenia is a condition which causes a low bone density with Rebecca at a high risk of developing osteoporosis in the future and working in health care she knows the pain and discomfort which can result from the condition as well as loss of confidence and independence – this inspired her to run. Rebecca said: “East Surrey Hospital admits more than 500 patients a year who have

suffered a hip fracture. All of them are either treated or investigated for osteoporosis. For older people, hip fractures are the commonest cause of accidental death. I knew I wanted to do something.’ “After watching the 2016 London Marathon, as I do most years, I knew that I was going to do it. It had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I made contact

with the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) and put my name forward for one of their charity places.” By the end of May 2016 Rebecca had been accepted, remarkably between December 2015 and April 2016 she had not been able to walk properly but she decided that she was going to run the London Marathon and undergo some serious punishment on the capital’s streets for the charity NOS. NOS is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. The charity also offers free support and information to people affected, worldwide it is estimated there are 9 million osteoporosisrelated fractures each year. Rebecca’s fundraising target for the London Marathon is £1,700 and after months of taking part in park runs and road training alongside gym work she is ready to take on the 42.20 km or 26.22 miles on Sunday, April 23 – it’ll be no walk in the park but Rebecca is used to overcoming challenges.

If you would like to sponsor Rebecca as she runs the London Marathon for the National Osteoporosis Society, visit her JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Rebecca-Howells0906

COMMUNITY RH History Uncovered:

Crawley New Town 70 Years Young As part of the rebuilding of Britain following the Second World War, under the provision of the 1946 New Towns Act, it was announced that the villages of Three Bridges and Ifield and the market town of Crawley would be brought together as one town – this month, RH History Uncovered looks back. By Jacob White

F

ollowing six destructive years of war between 1939 and 1945 the post-war Labour government of Clement Attlee set about rebuilding Britain by developing eight new towns to accommodate people and industry moved out of the overcrowded and bombdamaged capital and into the countryside. On January 9 1947 the Minister for Town and Country Planning, Lewis Silkin confirmed the order to designate Crawley as a new town. The aim was to create a community of 50,000 people by building nine neighbourhoods between the villages of Three Bridges, Ifield and the existing town of Crawley. Since the late 1940s, Crawley has grown beyond Silkin’s vision to now become 14 neighbourhoods with a combined population of more than100,000. The backbone of the town’s layout remains that of architect Anthony Minoprio, the consultant planner during the new town’s origins. As Crawley marks its 70th birthday, the borough council is planning a year of events, including the opening of the new Crawley Museum in The Tree in the High Street which will feature new town exhibits, a 1947 outdoor cinema event and a concert of music from across the past 70 years.

The council enlisted the design skills of students at Thomas Beckett Community College to design a logo for Crawley’s 70th birthday featuring platinum – the colour associated with celebrations marking 70 years and earlier this year the logo was unveiled by the town’s mayor Cllr Raj Sharma. Cllr Michael Jones, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement at Crawley Borough Council, said: “We are pulling together an exciting and varied programme of events to make this a year to remember everyone in Crawley. We’re keen to hear any more ideas that residents have.”

The council’s Open Grants scheme is open for applications for neighbourhood action and residents are invited to apply for funding for events which could celebrate Crawley’s 70th birthday such as 1940s themed street parties, for more information and to apply, visit: www.crawley.gov.uk/grants So, what of the future of Crawley? On the coats of arms of the town following the 1947 formation is the motto: ‘I Grow and I Rejoice’ – seven decades on the town continues to grow, from a series of villages and a small town to one large town, next stop, city status? MP Henry Smith has suggested the idea...

Those were the days…

Are you old enough to remember the building of Crawley New Town 70 years-ago? If so, what are your memories? We would love to hear from you! COMMUNITY Spotlight:

Feed Crawley

Since June last year one group in Crawley has been turning surplus supermarket food into meals and food parcels on Wednesday evenings for local rough sleepers, the elderly and others in need of food. By Jacob White

F

areshare, a UK-based charity set up to help prevent good food from going to waste approached Crawley Community Church with a view to providing food for those in need. The charity partners groups and organisations who help tackle hunger in their local community. Crawley Community Church accepted the opportunity and began collecting food from Tesco that was set aside for collection from the summer of 2016. Since then, the group has developed links with Tesco.com, Fareshare direct, and a housing association. Ziggy, from Feed Crawley, says: “For a long time, Crawley Community Church has had a strong desire to love and serve the town in any way we can and so, when Fareshare got in touch it was too good an opportunity to let pass by. To see people being well-fed, well cared for and connecting with a hugely diverse community is a wonderful thing.”

Feed Crawley provides a free meal every Wednesday evening between 5.00pm and 9.00pm. The charity also takes food to rough sleepers and provides food parcels to those in need. The group aims to change the way food is disregarded and wants to help stop food from being wasted. As well as providing a food service, Feed Crawley do their bit to support volunteering, working with OUTSET Youth Action – a volunteering agency for young people aged between 13 and 25 opening up opportunities for them to get into community volunteering. “Feed Crawley has a desire to impact and serve the local community. We are part of a diverse church in a diverse town and so our heart is to be inclusive and open to absolutely anybody who needs a meal, good company and conversation, somewhere out of the cold - you’d be so welcome to join us on a Wednesday” Ziggy said.

Feed Crawley has grown quickly from feeding just one person back in June 2016 to more recently when it fed more than 300 people on one Wednesday evening. The numbers show that there is a huge need and Feed Crawley’s volunteers love to help in feeding those who need it. Feed Crawley see that there are underlying causes to hunger and poverty and hope to be able to identify and provide solutions for individuals. Whether that’s through links to Money Management; a debt advice service, Jungle Tots; a parent and toddler group, or making friendships with others to help those who are lonely. Ziggy, says: “We’re doing all we can to make a difference in our community. We would love to connect with local schools and help with School holiday hunger.”

Feed Crawley opens its doors every Wednesday between 5.00pm and 9.00pm at The Charis Centre, West Green Drive, Crawley RH11 7EL. For more information call: 01293 561933 or visit: www.facebook.com/feedcrawley/

HOMES

Simple Ways To Make Your Home Allergy-Friendly Increasing numbers of us are suffering from allergies associated with the home; tackling allergy causes can be easier than you may think. This month we’ve got tips for trying to keep allergens at bay and ways in which you might be able to reduce pollen and dust which all too often lead to allergies. By Jacob White Avoid chemicals It is a good idea to avoid harsh chemicals when you buy cleaning products. Some detergents and fabric softeners contain chemicals which exacerbate an allergy. Opt for eco-friendly products, or make your own using items such as baking soda, vinegar and lemon. Thorough cleaning If you suffer from an allergy, it is worth cleaning your home thoroughly once or twice a week. When buying a vacuum cleaner, look for a quality high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filter which has a higher success rate of picking up tiny allergens that other vacuums often simply disturb. Reduce clutter It is a good idea to clear away as much clutter as possible. That can be extra cushions, boxes of clothes or other items which take up space and gather dust – by making space you can make it difficult for allergens to attach.

Mould-free bathrooms Keep your bathroom clean and mould-free – scrub tiles regularly and make sure to regularly clean the shower curtains. Good quality shower curtains can be washed in a washing machine Dust properly Dusting is a simple way of ridding the home of allergens, for it to be a success you need to do it properly. Use a damp cloth so that allergens can stick to the cloth instead of lifting them into the air only to fall down onto the surface. Clean bedroom In the height of hay fever season make sure you wash your sheets at least once a week. Your mattresses collect dust – home for dust mites which cause severe allergies. Make sure you professionally clean your mattresses every six months. If you have children, think about washing their soft, cuddly toys regularly as these can collect and harbour allergens in the bedroom.

Stay pollen-free During the hay fever season, it is important to keep the level of pollen you transfer to your home down as it’s likely you’re in-and-out of the home. One quick fix is placing a doormat outside your front door and ask guests to take their shoes off as they enter your home. Window management It’s good to manage when to and not to open your windows. As a general rule plants pollinate between 5.00am and 9.00am, so it is a good idea to close windows at those times and open them at sunset when the levels of pollen are at their lowest. Pet care Allergens like dust and pollen settle on animal fur which means as soon as the animals come indoors so do the allergens. Before letting pets in, the best thing to do is to give your pet a thorough brush.

GARDENS

The Green, Green, Grass (The Grass Can Be Greener…)

Now is the perfect time to kick-start lawn care as the grass awakens from the dormant winter period, by following some simple steps, you can help maintain healthy grass which looks and feels great! By Russell Cobley

B

efore you plan anything, take a few minutes to inspect your lawn, it is likely you will have a mix of moss and weeds, and you may also have bare or yellowish brown patches - these symptoms suggest you need to undertake lawn maintenance.

Aeration Over time the soil in your lawn will become compacted, limiting nutrients, air and water from reaching the grass roots, leading to an unhealthy lawn. You can aerate using a garden fork or hire a mechanical aerator, this may also aid lawn drainage too.

Mowing Your lawn will benefit from mowing as it helps make the lawn thicken up. Don’t be tempted to mow when the ground conditions are wet or frosty. Ensure that your mower blades are sharp and set high for the first cut. Take no more than one third off the length of the grass each cut until you reach the height of around 2” for most domestic lawns. Cutting too short, either in one go, or gradually, will damage the lawn. If you have moss in your lawn, mow at least ½” above moss height and mow shaded areas 50% higher than non-shady areas.

Moss & Weeds Our climate promotes moss that will gradually take over the lawn. Weeds are likely to be present this time of year and will start growing. If you tackle them early, you can keep them at bay. Moss can be raked out and weeds removed by hand picking or weed killer.

Feeding Your lawn requires nutrients in spring sold as granular or liquid lawn fertiliser from garden centres. Do not over feed as you can damage the grass or encourage too much growth too soon, resulting in a lot of mowing and a less dense lawn.

Scarification An essential maintenance task to remove moss and dead grass from the lawn, allowing more water, air and nutrients to reach the soil surface and making the grass healthier. You can purchase moss remover in garden centres and manually rake out a few days later. You can hire a mechanical scarifier to make the job easier. Be prepared for some hard work and do not scarify earlier than March or later than May as the lawn will not recover quickly. After, it’s recommended to apply grass seed to fill in the many gaps left.

Patches & Bare Areas Cutting your grass too short, shade, animal urine or lack of water are some causes of patches. They are cured by aerating the soil, fertilising and regularly watering. Alternatively, replace the areas with new grass seed or turf. Grass will struggle in shady areas, so consider cutting back overhanging vegetation or using shade tolerant seed or turf to replace the patchy lawn areas. Seeding Now is a good time to put down grass seed over your existing lawn, to thicken it up. Seeding can also be used where a lawn has bare or dry patches. Seed requires good soil contact, warmth (8oC+) and constant moisture for at least 24 days to have a chance of germinating. Water daily in the morning or late evening. Lawn Care Companies If you are unsure of what to do, have tried the DIY approach or lack the time, consider speaking to your local lawn care company, who can offer expert advice on your lawn’s condition, recommend a weed and feed treatment plan, including specialist labour saving machinery to undertake aeration and scarification.

MOTORING

New or Nearly New Thinking about a new car? What do you choose? New, or nearly new?

I

By Ben Morley

f you have been fortunate enough to have a brand new car, there is no feeling like it. The knowledge that no one other than a salesman, a delivery driver, and perhaps a workshop technician carrying out tests has driven the car before. I do not deny that it’s a great feeling. What’s not such a great feeling is how much the value of it drops as soon as it leaves the showroom. If you’re planning on keeping it for a long time, this is of little consequence, but if you’re not planning on keeping it that long, straight away you need to think about the cost. It might be worth looking at a pre-registered car or perhaps one that’s already a year or so old and someone else has effectively thrown their couple of grand down the drain and not yours! Not to mention the new taxation bands that come into effect this year.

The first year’s road tax could set you back a fair whack, depending on what you buy and after the first year, it’s a nice round figure for the rest of the car’s life. There is the current trend for getting yourself a car on personal contract purchase (PCP) to consider. Yes, you get a nice new car and all the bells and whistles that are thrown in to entice you to buy, but there is only really one winner in that situation. A cynic might say that those that opt for PCP may regret it the next time our country finds itself in a credit crunch. Personally, I’m a great believer in older is better. Take my lovely next-door neighbour, for example. She owns her car, she’s loved and cared for it all of its life, and some 15 years later, it’s still going strong and in fine fettle. Take a brand new car, complete with more than 100

MOT Special Offer Only £45

electronic modules that are bound to go wrong. To change a headlamp bulb on the 15-year-old car is a five-minute job. I know that on a new version, the same job would set you back more than £400 at a main agent. So in the question new or nearly new, I would opt for nearly new every time, though don’t be wooed by third party warranty schemes, they are rarely worth the paper that they are written on, always opt for manufacturer-backed used car warranties.

STYLE

Wedding Fever!

Planning your wedding can be a minefield – take it from a recent bride who has been there, got the dress, cake and the ring! Here are some tips and tricks to steer you through wedding planning! By Shelley Welti Start planning early Whether you have got two years or six months until your big day the time to start planning is now! Sit down with your other half and discuss how you want your wedding day to be and how much you can afford to make your dream day a reality. Once you’ve agreed on a date, send out your invitations, so that family and friends know the date.

34

Don’t be swayed This may sound simple, but with so much choice on wedding blogs and in magazines, not to mention family and friends making suggestions, it’s easy to veer off track and end up wondering where the wedding you were planning went. It’s YOUR wedding, make sure it’s as original as you two and represents your personalities. If you don’t want bridesmaids, don’t have them. If the thought of a big, formal wedding scares you, stay small and be happy. Stay true to who you are. What works for a friend or celebrity may not work for you.

Trust your suppliers Once you have invested in your suppliers, it’s important to let go and trust them to work their magic on the big day. Have a pre-wedding meeting with your photographer, videographer, caterer, florist and venue co-ordinator to ensure that they know what you want. It will help them to understand your vision but don’t forget it is their job; they are the professionals!

Stick to budget With the average UK wedding now costing £25,000, it’s important to set a budget at the beginning and stick to it. Although you may not think it possible, there are a few ways to keep costs down. A wedding in January or November can cost half than the same wedding planned for July or August. Venues and wedding suppliers are in less demand during winter months so take advantage! If a quote is more than you’d hoped for, negotiation is still an option. Compromise with them and work towards the original budget you had in mind – all it takes is an honest conversation, it’s worth trying!

Try and enjoy every moment Speak to any recent bride or groom, and they will tell you one thing - enjoy yourself! In the final few weeks when there’s so much going on, it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed out, but it does fly by and before you know it the big day has come and gone – and then you’ll be wishing you could do it all over again! On the day, if you can, try to escape for a few minutes with your husband or wife and just treasure the moment of being married and hearing your nearest and dearest all having a fantastic time in the distance! Someone suggested it to me, and it was one of my most favourite memories from my wedding day!

Every month, we talk to over one hundred thousand South of England households – Do you want to talk to them too? These days, the options for marketing your business are almost limitless. A few years ago, all most people did was chuck a listing in the Yellow Pages, join a local networking group and rely on word of mouth. In the 21st century, the landscape’s changed, a lot. New media’s come in, in a big way; and every few months there’s a new ‘shiny object’ that’s described as ‘the one thing that businesses must do’. At Mantra Magazines, we’ve got an alternative. Because, whilst Facebook and Google are important, every single month we can testify to the fact that print advertising is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving.

Over the last 10 years I’ve really built up a good rapport with RH Uncovered and I really trust what they do for me, so on that basis I really wouldn’t feel that I would go anywhere else Tim Burberry, Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating

They are very easy to talk to, nothing is ever too much trouble and they get things right, first time. There is no stress involved in dealing with them. They know what I want and return something that is pretty much perfect Greg Fergusson Fergussons Auto Services,

Every single year since we started out, our business has grown; and there’s a simple reason for that: businesses want to reach out to their prospects in a way that’s genuine, trustworthy and builds relationships. The fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more difficult to do that online, when your prospect doesn’t get to retain your message, dwell on it and decide whether it’s for them or not. For strong, long-lasting and profitable relationships with your target market, print advertising is still where it’s at, and given that advertising with our magazines can give you access to over 100,000 homes, that’s no surprise. Call us today on 01342 718348 for more details on how we can help you.

Checking A Care Home When considering a care home there are three important steps: Check care home inspection reports There are four watchdogs charged with inspecting and reporting on care providers, their reports are publically available and the best source is the Care Quality Commission, to learn more about the body and for its listings, see: www.cqc.org.uk Ask friends and family for recommendations Do you know someone who has a friend or relative already in a care home? A recommendation from a resident or acquaintance is always helpful! Visit the care homes, most offer open days Try to visit homes, whether an open day which is open to the public or if you need to make a private appointment to meet the care home manager. When you do visit try to get as much information as you can on the care home

Industry Opinion Pramojil Kurian, General Manager of Barchester Healthcare’s Reigate Beaumont Care Home, says: “A good care home works closely with individuals and their families to ensure each person settles in quickly and feels at home straight away. Questions around lifestyle are just as important as questions around care when it comes to helping people feel at home.’ “My whole team are trained to understand the importance of giving person-centred care and ensuring residents are living life their way, and even as people’s care needs change, this approach remains the same.”

What makes a house a home? Questions to ask: Is there a garden, and can residents get involved?

If gardening has brought great joy to someone’s life over the years or just in retirement it can be important to keep this hobby alive. Increasing numbers of care homes have gardens and are now letting green-fingered residents get their spades out.

Can residents keep their beloved pet?

Pets can be a much-loved member of any family, especially when someone becomes widowed. Some care homes recognise the health benefits of pets for residents with certain conditions and the emotional benefits of residents being allowed to keep their beloved pets with them.

What social life is there?

Although some care is needed it doesn’t mean that there is not room for some socialising. The social activities open to residents can vary greatly; from guest speakers, day trips to places of interest and in-home exhibitions.

Is there a space for a computer in the room and is there an Internet connection?

A computer can be invaluable for things like Skype and Facebook for communicating with family (especially the grandchildren) and friends.

Is there a telephone point in the room or somewhere private phone calls may be made? Whether your loved one has a mobile phone or not they may like a landline. Many care homes provide a telephone point in the resident’s room.

I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.

We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos

PET CARE

Should You Take Your Pet On Holiday? Are you one of the 1.4million people planning on taking your pet on holiday with you this summer? If you’re not sure whether to pack your pooch, cat or even ferret, along with your sun cream and swimwear, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you decide. By Shelley Welti Take your pet if… If you’re hoping to take your furry friend with you on your holiday, there are considerations to think about. Has your pet travelled before? Do you think they would be distressed during the journey? Do you think they would feel more distressed left at home or in boarding? If they would enjoy the adventure of travelling with you and be happier there than at home – take them on the trip! Importantly, whether your pet can come with you on holiday is where you are holidaying and how you are getting there. If you are heading off to a pet-friendly hotel on the coast travelling by car, it will be easier to take your pet with you than if you are jetting off to far-flung shores. There are lots of UK hotels, lodges, caravan parks and campsites that allow pets – do your research before you leave!

Don’t take your pet if… We all know that sometimes even just getting pets in the car for a trip to the vets can be hard enough work, let alone preparing them for a journey taking hours. If you have any concerns at all about your pet’s ability to travel or if they become anxious in new places, it may be best to leave them at home with a trusted pet-sitter or put them into boarding whilst you are away. Ensure that your animal is happy and healthy to travel, it’s vital that your chosen destination is right. Perhaps you are planning on a schedule of days out at theme parks and attractions? Or, you want to lie on the sun-drenched beach? If so, this itinerary may not make your pet happy – especially if they are likely to be left behind at your accommodation without you for most of the day.

Jo’s Creature Comforts Jo’s Creature Comforts is a family business, created through the love we all have for animals of all shapes and sizes.

W

e have 2 dog’s of our own, Junior, a 7 year old Lurcher, that thinks he is a Greyhound, so don't let him know any different. We have had Junior since he was 11 weeks old, after being rescued by Kent Greyhound rescue service, after Junior and his brother were found in a skip. He is a very loving a very lazy dog. Our newest member of our family is Kaiser, a 9 week old German Shepherd, who is getting up to no good, chewing everything in site, including toes We have lots of friends at Jo's Creature Comforts, and enjoy our regular adventures in the woods and forests. We visit lots of lovely places on our walks and always have fun together. We at Jo's Creature Comforts specialise in hour-long, off-lead walks. A tired dog makes for a happy owner! In addition to exercise, the dogs in our pack work on social skills such as staying together in a group, coming

when called, and being well-mannered on the trails. And, unlike dog kennel care, our dogs get to roam, run, and sniff, satisfying their deeply seated “seeking” drive, the urge to explore and understand new environments. Jo's Creature Comforts also offers puppy day care, onleash neighborhood walks, cat care, reptile and rodent care, and in-home pet and house sitting. Whatever you and your pets need, call us to see how we can help make your life together better! The whole of the family join in our business, from having fun on our dog walks to helping them settle in our home for their holidays.

We love providing this service to our customers, it is the most rewarding job and we have our own little family within Jo' Creature Comforts. The majority of our customers are regulars and we have had some lovely feedback, of which we are very proud. We have 2 Vehicles to transport our customers dogs, both have been converted to allow dogs and cats to travel safely, whilst being able to view outside from the large windows. CHILDREN

How To Beat Exam Season Stress

Spring has sprung, and summer is in touching distance – but with it comes the weeks that strike fear among children and their families; exam season. By Shelley Welti

W

hether your child is at primary school, secondary school, sixth form or college, the chances are that they will be sitting exams at some point in the near future. How can you help to reduce the stress they – and in turn, the rest of the family – experience in the run up to their exams? Here’s our guide for making the next few months as stress-free as possible.

Get Creative with Revision Gone are the days when revision meant spending days reading textbooks, it can now be tailored to how best your child learns. Group study sessions with friends are also helpful to ease anxiety and break up the boredom that some children feel when revising. Discuss options with your child and ask for their suggestions to make their learning feel less like a chore.

Be Aware It doesn’t matter whether your child is sitting their SATs, GCSEs or A-Levels; for them, they’re entering a period where they feel perhaps the most pressure to perform than they’ve ever had before. Look out for any signs that your child is beginning to worry about their exams; irritability, lack of appetite and not sleeping well are just a few key signs that your child may be stressed. If you notice any changes, talk to them and let them know that they’re not on their own.

Brain Fuel We know that what we eat and drink affects feelings and behaviour – parents find sweets and and other treats, high in fat, sugar and caffeine make their children hyperactive and experience mood swings. A balanced, healthy diet is important in the run up to exams, ensure that they’re eating breakfast, lunch and dinner – filled with brain-boosting ingredients such as fish, eggs, and fruit and vegetables.

No Pressure With family life continuing and the desire for our children to do well in their exams, it’s understandable that children can feel pressured. Reassure them that you know that they’ll do their best – and that it’s not the end of the world. In most cases, exams can be retaken. Praise and Rewards Don’t forget to praise and reward your child after each exam. Rewards don’t have to be big financial ones; perhaps you could treat them to their favourite dinner or magazine for a bit of me-time, or give them an afternoon off revising to be free for a few hours!

Bedtime Routine Just like eating, sleeping is a necessity – especially when it comes to periods of stress. Studies show a good night’s sleep is vital for concentration, so make sure that your child winds down. It is believed that teen’s need between 8-10 hours each night.
