Lloyds Launches Community Defibrillator In Haywards Heath In June, Lloyds Banking Group Operations in Haywards Heath launched the bank’s first community defibrillator in the town in an event which was attended by local dignitaries and senior management from the bank. By Jacob White

T

he team at Lloyds had worked with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, to provide this vital piece of life-saving equipment for the residents of Haywards Heath as part of their commitment to the local community. Haywards Heath Mayor Cllr. James Knight unveiled the life-saving machine and was joined by Nick Allen, Retail Customer Delivery Director for Lloyds Bank at a ceremony at the banking firm’s Perrymount Road site. Defibrillation is a treatment for someone in a life-threatening cardiac arrest - a defibrillator delivers an immediate highenergy dose of electric current to the heart, often called a countershock which travels through the chest wall.

There are many defibrillators available in public places such as train stations, shopping centres, airport and leisure centres – these defibrillators are often known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as anyone can use them in an emergency. The location of life-saving PADs should be given to the ambulance service so 999 operators can quickly identify a nearby device in future emergencies, and Lloyds Banking Group are doing their bit to ensure greater public access in Haywards Heath. Sandra Holman, senior manager for the Lloyds team, said: “I am so proud of my team, for coming up with the concept and making it happen, helping to really put Lloyds Banking Group in the ‘heart of the community’”.

Singing All Sorts Of Songs With All Sorts Of People The Singing Allsorts is a ladies choir based in Cuckfield which was formed in 2007 by their musical director, Jane Haughton. It has a thriving membership of 50 women, divided into soprano, second, and alto sections - the group meet weekly to sing a varied repertoire. By Georgia Lambert

T

he members of the ecliptic group are all sorts of people who sing all sorts of music - from madrigals to traditional African chants, and from folk songs to show tunes and from classical to pop. Jane Haughton studied piano and singing at Trinity College of Music and has had a career as a soloist and as a teacher. In 1999 she joined the Royal Opera House Choir with whom she sang for six years. Jane teaches at Ardingly College, runs a choir for people with Dementia, an infant choir, The Cuckoo Choir and Singing Allsorts. Singing Allsorts are first and foremost a community choir, and their main summer concert is a fundraising event, with all revenue going towards two charities, which are chosen annually by choir members. This year, their July concert was in aid of MIND, a mental health charity, and Kangaroos, a charity supporting young people with disabilities. Over the Christmas period, the group will perform at Holy Trinity Church’s Christmas Tree Festival and in the past, they have sung at care homes, in village festivals and at other events.

6

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Every October, the group are proud to contribute a float to the Cuckfield Mayoral Procession. In 2014, the Allsorts ladies were thrilled to win first prize with their Land Girls themed float, commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War. In 2015, they picked an “umbrella” theme, reflecting the prevailing weather conditions for many Mayoral Processions and in 2016, they won second prize for their Singing Allsorts Railway Engine, celebrating 175 years since the arrival of the Haywards Heath railway. Who knows what the theme will be this year? You will have to wait until October to find out as it is a closely guarded secret!

RH Uncovered

The choir is open to all and auditions are not necessary, although because the choir’s popularity is growing, there is a waiting list to be part of the group. Singing Allsorts meetings take place at the Baptist Church on Polestub Lane, Cuckfield each Monday evening at 8.00pm during term time - working on technique, extending their repertoire and finessing their performances and even adding in dance moves! Talking about life in the choir, one member said: “The Singing Allsorts are much more than a choir, they have become a group of close friends, supporting each other in times of need and providing a space to sing, have fun and meet new people.”

Stepping Through Time With Jane Reid Three-time published historical fiction author from Haywards Heath, Jane Reid brings Sussex alive from a bygone era. Born in the county, Jane has lived in Haywards Heath since 1953, as well as writing she is an artist who has always been torn between writing and drawing.

J

By Georgia Lambert

ane made several attempts at writing novels but found doing bespoke works of people’s houses and botanical and flower art studies was more lucrative. Writing since the 1960s, in 1983, she had a handbook about Lindfield with handdrawn illustrations published, for the local bookshop in the High Street to give to visitors of the village. This handbook is still available to buy in The Bookshop in East Grinstead and in Calliope Gifts in the Orchards shopping centre in Haywards Heath. Jane’s first book, the historical narrative The Book of the Randalls was released in 2015 and it follows a longestablished Sussex family, the Randalls, set at the end of the 18th Century. It follows the life of a young woman until she is old in 1859. The final section of the book is set in 1965 when people with the same name look up their family history. Jane is now busy working on the sequel which will be set in 1965 and will examine the story of the Randall descendants.

One manuscript that Jane thought she had abandoned after re-writing many times, again came to Jane’s attention and in 2016, her novel called Family Gatherings, was published in two volumes. The Book of the Randalls and Family Gatherings are set chiefly in Sussex, and they concern the people who live in the county. Rain in the Winter Garden is the title of Jane’s latest release and is set in a seaside hotel in the 1970s at the time when a lot of older people were given the chance to stay there at a cheaper rate during the winter. It is seen through the eyes of a young writer who is also staying at the hotel and he comes to realise that they may be elderly, but they are still people with real stories. The book came out this spring, and Waterstones chose it to be on display to the public, it is also available to buy from The Bookshop, East Grinstead “I may have concentrated on the writing over the last few years, but I continue to draw and paint. I have some

flower prints and black and white notelets of depicting Haywards Heath in the 1970s and Lindfield in the 1980s. These pieces have proved to be remarkably popular and are available to buy,” said Jane. These notelets have been sold at Haywards Heath Society meetings and on stalls at the Haywards Heath Town Day and Spring Festivals. The flower prints range from wild roses, and violets, to wood anemones and primroses. Jane is hoping to have a stall at this year’s craft section of the Lindfield Arts Festival that is held in early September.

Jane’s novels are available to buy from The Bookshop in East Grinstead, Amazon or Waterstones.

What To Do If You Did Not Make The Grade The exams have been sat and the results are in. After weeks of exams, months of revision and years of studying the hard work is over but the tough choices about the future are only just beginning and those choices can become a lot tougher if you did not get the exam results you were hoping for but we a handy guide to what your next steps should be if your exam results are more “argh!” than A*. By Jacob White

F

or those who have just received their GCSE exam results and fallen short of expectations or the necessary grades needed to gain entry into a chosen school sixth form or further education college: Talk To Your Teachers About Re-marking If your grades are not what you expected and you think there is a mistake, speak to your teachers about re-marking. They can advise you on whether it is the right thing to do – you will need to make a re-marking request through your school. Talk To Your Sixth Form Or College If you did not get the grades needed, they might still be able to accept you or they may offer you a place on a different course at their institution. They may also be in the position to recommend other local colleges elsewhere which have entry requirements that would suit your exam results better.

courses both online and available at colleges which offer accredited professional qualifications in fields including PR, accounting, marketing and management. Think About An Apprenticeship Rewarding and well-paid careers can come out of apprenticeships – they allow you to study for your qualification while gaining practical experience working in your chosen industry. Typically, you work four days and study one. Some require certain grades at GCSE, check which apprenticeships you are eligible for. For more information, visit: www.gov.uk/topic/ further-education-skills/apprenticeships

Re-sit Your GCSEs While it might be difficult to come to terms with doing the work you have already completed, if you need certain grades to get the job or university place you want, your best option could be to re-sit your GCSEs. This does not have to mean re-doing them in school – you can take online GCSE courses that will allow you to fit them around work, A Levels, or other commitments. There are online GCSE courses, but bear in mind some have strict deadlines just like at school. If you are planning on working or taking A Levels at the same time as studying for GCSEs, it is best to find a flexible course with no deadlines. Look At Vocational Courses If you found your exams particularly difficult, it could be that an academic career is not for you. Think about taking a vocational or professional qualification which could suit you better - it will prepare you for work in a more practical way. There will be some hands-on learning as well as some time studying. There are vocational

Also, what can they do to help you post-match to make sure you feel a sense of wellbeing? By Jacob White

P

laying sport and doing regular exercise is good for your health, but sometimes sport can result in injuries caused by a fall or heavy blow, not warming up properly, using inappropriate equipment or poor technique or pushing yourself too hard. Almost any part of the body can be injured including the muscles, bones, joints and tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The most commonly affected areas vulnerable to both summer and winter sports injuries are the ankles and the knees. What Is Osteopathy And How Can Osteopaths Help? Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging muscles and joints based on the principle that health and wellbeing is based on bones, muscles, ligaments and tissues working together. An osteopath’s aim is to: • Increase the mobility of joints • Relieve muscle tension • Enhance blood supply to tissue • Help the body heal An osteopath can help with: • Lower back pain • Neck pain • Shoulder pain • Arthritis • Problems with the pelvis, hips and legs

Does osteopathy work? Many patients argue that it does work and it is especially effective in treating persistent lower back pain and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the treatment for those with the condition. Who can treat me in osteopathy? Osteopathy is not widely available on the NHS but your GP should be able to tell you whether it is available in your area but most patients pay for osteopathy treatment privately with treatment costs varying for different sessions. You do not need to be referred by your GP to see a private osteopath, a top tip is that most private health insurers provide cover for osteopathic treatment but do see your policy for more details. Importantly, when you are looking for an osteopath, only practitioners registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) are allowed to practise as osteopaths or call themselves osteopaths.

HOMES

How To Create The Perfect Guest Room The summer holidays are here and the number of guests passing through the home is up, but just how do you create the perfect guest room? Here are some ideas to make your guest feel at home! By Jacob White

W

hether you are hosting friends, your mother-in-law or your parents are spending the summer holidays with you to help with childcare, or if it is your children returning home from university for the summer, what simple additions can you make to a spare room make sure it has a wow factor? Bags of Books One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else’s home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have wall-shelving or a bookcase, stock with a variety of good quality reading that appeals to all tastes. Do not forget to add some bright bedside lamps or reading lights! Case Closed Add a fold-up luggage stand, this hotel-inspired touch saves guests from having to squat on the floor to rifle through their suitcases for items. Make sure it is accessible and ready at the foot of the bed. Accessorise Whether you put them in the bathroom or in the bedroom, little extras make guests feel special. Taking more inspiration from hotel visits - include toiletries and niceties in case of forgotten items such as mini toothpaste, an extra toothbrush, emery boards and small bottles of hand lotion.

Pillow Delight Some like them flat, some like them fluffy. Keep a range of pillows ready to satisfy guests’ individual tastes and do not forget to invest in tasteful blankets, you never know with the British weather! Get Hooked Your guests will not have a designated spot in your home to tuck away jumpers, purses and car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks on the backs of doors, or in easily accessible areas of their guest room. Remember to have plenty of coat hangers available for outdoor clothes. Say It With Flowers There is nothing as welcoming as freshly cut flowers, keep the arrangement simple though. Stick a few cut blooms from your garden in a jug for a fresh

and vibrant welcome but try to avoid flowers with overpowering scents that can lead to headaches. Do not forget about guests with allergies! Right On Time Ensure that guests do not miss a planned activity, or breakfast by placing a small clock in their room, whether just for them to keep time, or for them to set the alarm for an early morning wake-up call. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall… Hang a mirror, large or small in the room to provide the perfect spot for your guest to comb their hair, touch up makeup or put on jewellery. If space allows, a long dressing mirror is an even better addition for guests who have a sense of style and want to look tip-tip from head to toe this summer.

GARDENS

Designing A Child-Friendly Garden For children the summer holidays and the garden go hand-in-hand – a great place for smashing balls around, running about with the dog, or having friends round for fun and games. However, this can be at odds with the view of a garden to parents or grandparents, so, what can you do to help this? By Jacob White

F

or most families, the first area of priority is somewhere to relax, eat or entertain outside - a sitting area where you can put out garden furniture and set up the barbecue is the answer, screened off with a low hedge, or some heavy containers, filled with easy-going plants – herbs are a good choice. Most people make their seating area close to the house, usually right outside patio doors where it is convenient but when the back of the house is in shade for most of the day, it is often better to put the seating area further down the garden, where it catches the sun for the longest amount of time. Think about a dedicated play area which relieves the adult garden of a lot of wear and tear. If you are looking to mark out sports pitches or place climbing frames or a playhouse use a ground surface with hard-wearing rye-grass or bark chippings. A lock-up garden chest is a good idea for garden toys. To prevent balls, dogs or small children in neighbours’ gardens, plant banks of shrubs around boundaries. Choose hardy varieties such forsythia or philadelphus, avoiding prickly ones such as berberis or pyracantha. Other ideas include climbers such as honeysuckle or thornless blackberry. The adult area of the garden is where you can house the more delicate features such as perennial flowerbeds, container garden, raised flowerbeds, greenhouse or decorative vegetable patch. These are best safely separated from the places children play by a soft barrier that is ball and bike proof!

28

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

A row of fruit trees, a hedge or an ornamental tree and shrub border makes an attractive and at the same time, practical divider. Alternatively, use ornamental trellis with climbers. If limited for space, a row of woven hazel or heather panels with an arch through into your next area does the trick! A child-friendly garden does not have to remain the same, keep it under review. As the children grow older, you might like to replace the play area and introduce an area for them to find a quiet space for them to complete their homework or meet friends in a relaxed and safe environment.

Play It Safe!

A good place to position a play area is the far end of the garden, but depending on the age of the children you might like the area closer to keep an eye on them. Remember, for their safety to keep gates locked and check for hazards including poisonous plants or garden tools and chemicals. One of the biggest dangers is the much-loved garden pond, however shallow – a toddler can easily fall in.
