Every month, we talk to over one hundred thousand South of England households – Do you want to talk to them too? These days, the options for marketing your business are almost limitless. A few years ago, all most people did was chuck a listing in the Yellow Pages, join a local networking group and rely on word of mouth. In the 21st century, the landscape’s changed, a lot. New media’s come in, in a big way; and every few months there’s a new ‘shiny object’ that’s described as ‘the one thing that businesses must do’. At Mantra Magazines, we’ve got an alternative. Because, whilst Facebook and Google are important, every single month we can testify to the fact that print advertising is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving.
Over the last 10 years I’ve really built up a good rapport with RH Uncovered and I really trust what they do for me, so on that basis I really wouldn’t feel that I would go anywhere else Tim Burberry, Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating
They are very easy to talk to, nothing is ever too much trouble and they get things right, first time. There is no stress involved in dealing with them. They know what I want and return something that is pretty much perfect Greg Fergusson Fergussons Auto Services,
Every single year since we started out, our business has grown; and there’s a simple reason for that: businesses want to reach out to their prospects in a way that’s genuine, trustworthy and builds relationships. The fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more difficult to do that online, when your prospect doesn’t get to retain your message, dwell on it and decide whether it’s for them or not. For strong, long-lasting and profitable relationships with your target market, print advertising is still where it’s at, and given that advertising with our magazines can give you access to over 100,000 homes, that’s no surprise. Alison’s Shine Story
Shine is a national charity with local peer support networks for adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who often miss out from standard support services. There is never a good time to have cancer and the team at Shine is aware that younger adults face different challenges to their older or younger counterparts.
S
hine’s vision is to offer support that suits their lifestyles, within an empowering and understanding community. Shine Sussex is the local branch run by Alison, a loving mother and a cancer survivor. Alison had just become a single mother of a 4-year-old when she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She first visited her GP with what seemed like an infection; however, when there was no improvement she was sent to the Park Breast Centre in Brighton and underwent a triple assessment, mammogram and ultrasound and had biopsies of the swollen area. After a wait, she received the devastating news that she had cancer. “During the diagnosis, cancer was never mentioned as a possibility – I was only 35. You’ve seen the adverts where the world falls away when they give you a cancer diagnosis. Well, I think I was more stunned and frustrated that there had been no urgency at any stage” Alison said. Alison bravely underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, during her experience, she didn’t have a

By Georgia Lambert great support network which is something she wished was different. She attended a support group with people 30 years her senior and felt out of place and too young to be experiencing cancer. She found it hard to juggle appointments, arrange transport and childcare. Being a full-time mum and having cancer proved a real struggle, then Alison found Shine. After going to their annual camping event with her son she met people of her age who were in similar situations, and she felt like it was the support group for her. “It was somewhere you could say anything, throw in some dark humour, say the things nobody thinks you should say, be happy, be angry and be whatever you want. Shine gave me a place where I felt normal, and I am happy to say that five years later I am cancer free!” “I set up the Sussex branch of Shine as I understood there was a real gap in the services for younger adults, especially those of us who want to set ourselves up for a career, a home and those who are looking after children or trying for a family” Alison says. The charity provides a

friendly environment to meet others in similar situations, and it’s run wholly by people who have experienced a cancer diagnosis in the 20 - 40 age range. Local network leaders are all volunteers and they organise monthly informal get-togethers. These events will normally be held in cafes or pubs, and the activities include walks, bowling and dinners and people are welcome to bring partners or children. Shine helped Alison when no one else understood what it was like to juggle treatment with family and work commitments. After Alison’s surgery, the charity continued to support her with both the mental and physical side effects – they will always be there for her.

ulia has huge experience in this specialism, which may be small but sadly the incidence of these types of medical problems are widely spread in dogs and are so often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. “So often we think our dogs are getting older because they are slowing down, but what is frequently happening is they are suffering chronic pain. During my time treating these dogs, the results have been incredible, and the treatment gives these dogs a renewed quality of life” said Julia. Anyone who has suffered or is suffering chronic muscle pain, such as ongoing back pain, will know that it can change your whole perception of your life and your activity levels. Chronic pain sits relentlessly under the surface of our conscious pain threshold that often causes a negative influence on our life and living perception. This problem can also be found in dogs. A relatively small trauma such as a trip or a twist can affect them profoundly because of the chronic pain

which can be confused with the mishaps of getting older. A typical scenario is to take a dog to the vet if they are lame or slowing down, which is the correct course of action. However, sadly chronic muscle pain is particularly difficult to diagnose and the lameness presented is often thought to be as a result of osteoarthritis. Arthritis is a common condition that dogs develop as they get older, however, the persistent pain is often the source of the apparent ‘ageing’ process. Galen Myotherapy (‘Myo’ meaning muscle) is a handson therapy and exercise management. inflammation. The consultants treat chronic muscular pain from underlying conditions or from old injuries. Julia says “Chronic pain will have a profound effect on your dog’s behaviour. I believe that dogs can get headaches in the same way we do and I have seen many dogs present with symptoms of photosensitivity, fatigue, retiring from all activity and interaction.” Next month, a team of Galen Myotherapists is jetting off to India to treat dogs and to train canine professionals in Bangalore, so they too can help dogs that are suffering like our beloved pets. They will also perform a study with the city’s street dogs gathering data that will aid them further with diagnosing chronic muscular pain in dogs.

Rockinghorse Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary By Supporting The Special Care Unit In Haywards Heath To mark their Golden Jubilee, children’s charity Rockinghorse has created a gift box for each baby discharged from the Trevor Mann Baby Unit in Brighton or the Special Care Baby Unit in Haywards Heath. By Georgia Lambert
I
nside the box is a special 2017 graduation babygrow and bib, courtesy of personalisation gift company 3 Blonde Bears, a handmade sensory blanket donated by Project Linus UK, and a gold-plated Rockinghorse pin badge and charity wristband for parents - the box itself has been created by the team at Face Media Group. Louise Bartha, Appeals and Trusts Fundraising Manager at Rockinghorse, said: “We’re delighted to have gifted our very first baby box in celebration of a baby boy from Burgess Hill discharged from the Special Care Baby Unit. Huge thanks to our partners 3 Blonde Bears, Face Media Group and Project Linus UK for making these gift boxes possible.” Jo Myles, Founder and Managing Director of 3 Blonde Bears, had premature twins in 2009 explains why she’s supporting the project: “Both Amelie and Dexter were taken to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at birth and then moved to
the Special Care Baby Unit in Haywards Heath, before coming home six weeks later. The support offered in both units was excellent. I am extremely pleased to be supporting Rockinghorse with the baby box project in their 50th year.” Rockinghorse was set up in 1967 by Dr Trevor Mann as an appeal to provide the first neonatal incubator outside of London. The fundraising was a great success, and the equipment was purchased for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton to treat premature babies. The appeal marked not only the beginning of the charity but also the early days of what later became the Trevor Mann Baby Unit. The dedicated team at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)
at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath cares for premature and sick newborns in the Mid Sussex catchment area who require short term high dependency care. Rockinghorse is a vital supporter of SCBU, where more than 250 babies are treated each year. Rockinghorse is working with the SCBU to help improve the facilities and provide the necessary equipment they need to continue high-quality neonatal care. As part of their 50th-year celebrations, they are funding the reconfiguration of the unit, with the introduction of Metavision, an electronic patient record system. In 2015 there were 284 admissions to the SCBU, and there is a real need to improve the services which are currently available within the unit. The reconfiguration will allow the nursery to be expanded, creating more space for emergency admissions and provide better access for mums to visit in wheelchairs as well access for neonatal transport incubators.
Rockinghorse would love to hear from parents with babies recently discharged from the Trevor Mann or Special Care baby units, who would like to claim their baby box free of charge. Call Louise at Rockinghorse on: 01273 330044 or email: louise.bartha@rockinghorse.org.uk

HOMES
Simple Ways To Make Your Home Allergy-Friendly Increasing numbers of us are suffering from allergies associated with the home; tackling allergy causes can be easier than you may think. This month we’ve got tips for trying to keep allergens at bay and ways in which you might be able to reduce pollen and dust which all too often lead to allergies. By Jacob White Avoid chemicals If you or a member of your family suffers from allergies, it is a good idea to avoid harsh chemicals like ammonia when you buy cleaning products. Some furniture polishes, detergents and fabric softeners contain chemicals which can exacerbate an allergy. Instead, opt for eco-friendly products, or even make your own! Using kitchen stock items such as baking soda, vinegar and lemon you can really clean-up! Thorough cleaning You don’t need to be a Kim or Aggie from TV show How Clean Is Your House? However, if you do suffer from an allergy, it is worth cleaning your home thoroughly once or twice a week. When buying a vacuum cleaner, look out for a quality high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filter which has a far higher success rate of picking up tiny allergens that other vacuums often simply disturb but not fully gather up. Reduce clutter At any time of year but especially during the pollen season, it is a good idea to clear away as much clutter as possible. That can be extra cushions, boxes of clothes or other items which take up space and gather dust – by making space you can make it more difficult for allergens to attach themselves.
16
www.rhuncovered.co.uk
Mould-free bathrooms To prevent a lot of allergies from triggering keep your bathroom clean and mould-free – scrub tiles regularly and make sure to regularly clean the shower curtains. Good quality shower curtains can be washed in a washing machine, and it is a smart idea to towel-dry the bathtub and wet areas once you’ve used it to prevent mould from building up and it will also help to keep the air from being too humid. Dust properly Dusting is a simple but effective way of ridding the home of allergens, however, for it to be a success you need to do it properly. Try using a damp cloth so that allergens can stick to the cloth instead of lifting the cloth into the air only to fall back down onto the surface which you have just ‘cleaned’. Clean bedroom With most of us sleeping anything between six and nine hours a day, it’s important to minimise the allergens in our bedroom. During the height of hay fever season make sure you wash your sheets at least once a week in hot water and dry them indoors. Your mattresses collect dust – home for dust mites which cause severe allergies. Make sure you professionally clean your mattresses at least once every six months. If you have children, think about washing their soft, cuddly toys regularly as these can

@RHUncovered
collect and harbour allergens in the bedroom and wider home. Stay pollen-free During the hay fever season, it is important to keep the level of pollen you transfer to your home down as it’s likely you’re in-andout of the home. One quick fix is placing a doormat outside your front door and ask guests to take their shoes off as they enter your home. It’s a good idea to change your clothes when you get home from work or a day out as pollen can settle on clothes and be transferred easily. Window management It’s challenging to predict the pollen that you or someone in your house is allergic to. It’s best to manage when to and not to open your windows. As a general rule plants pollinate between 5.00am and 9.00am, so it is a good idea to close windows at those times and open them at sunset when the levels of pollen are at their lowest. If possible use air-conditioning units during the hay fever season to avoid allergens. Pet care Allergens like dust and pollen settle on animal fur which means as soon as the animals come indoors so do the allergens. Before letting pets in, the best thing to do is to give your pet a thorough brush and make sure you vacuum your home at least a couple of times a week and avoid pets in your bedroom.

GARDENS
The Green, Green, Grass (The Grass Can Be Greener…)
Now is the perfect time to kick-start lawn care as the grass awakens from the dormant winter period, by following some simple steps, you can help maintain healthy grass which looks and feels great! By Russell Cobley
B
efore you plan anything, take a few minutes to inspect your lawn, it is likely you will have a mix of moss and weeds, and you may also have bare or yellowish brown patches these symptoms suggest you need to undertake lawn maintenance. Mowing Your lawn will benefit from mowing as it helps make the lawn thicken up. Don’t be tempted to mow when the ground conditions are wet or frosty. Ensure that your mower blades are sharp and set high for the first cut. Take no more than one third off the length of the grass each cut until you reach the height of around 2” for most domestic lawns. Cutting too short, either in one go, or gradually, will damage the lawn. If you have moss in your lawn, mow at least ½” above moss height and mow shaded areas 50% higher than non-shady areas. Feeding Your lawn requires nutrients in spring sold as granular or liquid lawn fertiliser from garden centres. Do not over feed as you can damage the grass or encourage too much growth too soon, resulting in a lot of mowing and a less dense lawn. Aeration Over time the soil in your lawn will become compacted, limiting
22
www.rhuncovered.co.uk
nutrients, air and water from reaching the grass roots, leading to an unhealthy lawn. You can aerate using a garden fork or hire a mechanical aerator, this may also aid lawn drainage too. Moss & Weeds Our climate promotes moss that will gradually take over the lawn. Weeds are likely to be present this time of year and will start growing. If you tackle them early, you can keep them at bay. Moss can be raked out and weeds removed by hand picking or weed killer. Scarification An essential maintenance task to remove moss and dead grass from the lawn, allowing more water, air and nutrients to reach the soil surface and making the grass healthier. You can purchase moss remover in garden centres and manually rake out a few days later. You can hire a mechanical scarifier to make the job easier. Be prepared for some hard work and do not scarify earlier than March or later than May as the lawn will not recover quickly. After, it’s recommended to apply grass seed to fill in the many gaps left.
Alternatively, replace the areas with new grass seed or turf. Grass will struggle in shady areas, so consider cutting back overhanging vegetation or using shade tolerant seed or turf to replace the patchy lawn areas. Seeding Now is a good time to put down grass seed over your existing lawn, to thicken it up. Seeding can also be used where a lawn has bare or dry patches. Seed requires good soil contact, warmth (8oC+) and constant moisture for at least 24 days to have a chance of germinating. Water daily in the morning or late evening. Lawn Care Companies If you are unsure of what to do, have tried the DIY approach or lack the time, consider speaking to your local lawn care company, who can offer expert advice on your lawn’s condition, recommend a weed and feed treatment plan, including specialist labour saving machinery to undertake aeration and scarification.
Patches & Bare Areas Cutting your grass too short, shade, animal urine or lack of water are some causes of patches. They are cured by aerating the soil, fertilising and regularly watering.

HEALTH
Choosing A Home From Home
When it comes to the care we choose for our loved ones it is natural to want to do everything possible to make sure their needs are met and they will be happy with the choice. What do you need to consider when you are choosing a home from home for your loved one? By Jacob White o help you choose an ideal home from home you need to arm yourself with some questions to ask the care home providers. If the home is going to be a genuine home from home you need to be sure they can offer the creature comforts your loved one has become used to. As well as care, it is important to think about activities that your loved one enjoys and whether these can be continued – is your mum green-fingered? Is your dad a dog-lover? Find that home from home.
T
Checking A Care Home When considering a care home there are three important steps: Check care home inspection reports There are four watchdogs charged with inspecting and reporting on care providers, their reports are publically available and the best source is the Care Quality Commission, to learn more about the body and for its listings, see: www.cqc.org.uk Ask friends and family for recommendations Do you know someone who has a friend or relative already in a care home? A recommendation from a resident or acquaintance is always helpful! Visit the care homes, most offer open days Try to visit homes, whether an open day which is open to the public or if you need to make a private appointment to meet the care home manager. When you do visit try to get as much information as you can on the care home
Industry Opinion Pramojil Kurian, General Manager of Barchester Healthcare’s Reigate Beaumont Care Home, says: “A good care home works closely with individuals and their families to ensure each person settles in quickly and feels at home straight away. Questions around lifestyle are just as important as questions around care when it comes to helping people feel at home.’ “My whole team are trained to understand the importance of giving person-centred care and ensuring residents are living life their way, and even as people’s care needs change, this approach remains the same.”

What makes a house a home? Questions to ask: Is there a garden, and can residents get involved?
If gardening has brought great joy to someone’s life over the years or just in retirement it can be important to keep this hobby alive. Increasing numbers of care homes have gardens and are now letting green-fingered residents get their spades out.
Can residents keep their beloved pet?
Pets can be a much-loved member of any family, especially when someone becomes widowed. Some care homes recognise the health benefits of pets for residents with certain conditions and the emotional benefits of residents being allowed to keep their beloved pets with them.
What social life is there?
Although some care is needed it doesn’t mean that there is not room for some socialising. The social activities open to residents can vary greatly; from guest speakers, day trips to places of interest and in-home exhibitions.
Is there a space for a computer in the room and is there an Internet connection?
A computer can be invaluable for things like Skype and Facebook for communicating with family (especially the grandchildren) and friends.
Is there a telephone point in the room or somewhere private phone calls may be made? Whether your loved one has a mobile phone or not they may like a landline. Many care homes provide a telephone point in the resident’s room.

PET CARE
Should You Take Your Pet On Holiday? Are you one of the 1.4million people planning on taking your pet on holiday with you this summer? If you’re not sure whether to pack your pooch, cat or even ferret, along with your sun cream and swimwear, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you decide. By Shelley Welti Take your pet if… If you’re hoping to take your furry friend with you on your holiday, there are considerations to think about. Has your pet travelled before? Do you think they would be distressed during the journey? Do you think they would feel more distressed left at home or in boarding? If they would enjoy the adventure of travelling with you and be happier there than at home – take them on the trip! Importantly, whether your pet can come with you on holiday is where you are holidaying and how you are getting there. If you are heading off to a pet-friendly hotel on the coast travelling by car, it will be easier to take your pet with you than if you are jetting off to far-flung shores. There are lots of UK hotels, lodges, caravan parks and campsites that allow pets – do your research before you leave!
Don’t take your pet if… We all know that sometimes even just getting pets in the car for a trip to the vets can be hard enough work, let alone preparing them for a journey taking hours. If you have any concerns at all about your pet’s ability to travel or if they become anxious in new places, it may be best to leave them at home with a trusted pet-sitter or put them into boarding whilst you are away. Ensure that your animal is happy and healthy to travel, it’s vital that your chosen destination is right. Perhaps you are planning on a schedule of days out at theme parks and attractions? Or, you want to lie on the sun-drenched beach? If so, this itinerary may not make your pet happy – especially if they are likely to be left behind at your accommodation without you for most of the day.

I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.
We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos
