Do I really need a survey? Helping you make an informed decision about the home you want to buy

Your home is likely to be the biggest investment of your life, yet many buyers do not commission an independent survey on its condition.

Did you know? ‘Which?’ magazine found that for those people who did not get a survey, on average, one in four had to spend £2,500 to put serious defects right which would have been identified in a condition report. For one in ten people it was over £10,000. By contrast those that did get a proper survey were able to negotiate a reduction in the price of the property that averaged £2,000.

Home Condition Survey Carried out by an experienced, fully qualified, accredited and insured residential property surveyor. It gives you a plain English, professional report on the condition of the property using a simple 1/2/3 condition rating, annotated photographs and a jargon free approach. We offer a fast, comprehensive and competitive service to inspect your new home for all the major defects which are likely to affect your decision to purchase.

Benefits include Peace of Mind

• Identifies major problems • Highlights areas of possible concern that need further investigation • Help you to plan for future expenditure

Your report will include information about:

• Building condition and defects • Structural movement • Damp, rot and woodworm • Heating, water and electrical services • Alterations and additions • Drains • Environmental issues • Health and safety • Matters for your conveyancer • Rebuilding Insurance reinstatement cost

The Horley Vimy Twinning Association The Horley Vimy Twinning Association (HVTA) is an independent organisation formed in 1991 to promote an exchange of friendship and culture between Britain and France which is ready to make its annual trip to the beautiful town in the Pas de Calais region, where the infamous Battle of Vimy Ridge took place in the First World War. By Georgia Lambert

T

he battle of Vimy Ridge is one of bravery and sacrifice. Taking place on April 9, 1917, it is commonly highlighted as a turning point in Canadian military history, where four Canadian divisions united as one fighting force to seize Vimy from the German army. They did so with tactful innovation and supported by a ‘creeping barrage’, the Canadian troops managing to capture most of the Ridge by the end of the first day. However, it was a victory at a terrible cost as more than 10,000 Canadian soldiers were killed or wounded. The victory against the German forces is often cited as the beginning of Canada’s road to nationhood. To underscore the sacrifices made by Canadian troops, France granted Canada land in the town of Vimy to build and maintain a memorial in remembrance of the battle. The site is not only Canada’s most important war memorial, but it is also considered by many military historians to be one of the most stirring of First World War monuments in the world; designed by Canadian sculptor Walter Seymour Allward.

6

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

As well as the monument, visitors to Vimy with an interest in military history and 20th century history can visit Vimy Ridge Museum, the preserved grange tunnels, front line trenches and the beautifully maintained cemeteries. Because of Vimy’s important military history, the Horley Vimy Twinning Association regularly holds interesting talks from Andy Thompson of EyeWitness Tours on the First and Second World Wars, to learn more, see: www.eyewitnesstours.com During the year, the HVTA acts as a social club between

RH Uncovered

member families, and they plan a lively programme of events throughout the year to raise funds for annual visits to Vimy and to sponsor exchange visits. The association organises dinners, quiz nights, treasure hunts around Horley and a Christmas party. At least once a year there is also a planned visit to or from Vimy, and in the past, it has been possible to travel both ways in a year. Vimy has a typically French town hall overlooking a small but idyllic square in the centre of the town where regular markets are held. Nearby are the historical towns of Arras and Vendin-Le-Vieil, where the association has strong musical links. In 2012, the Horley Singers and the HVTA held a concert in Horley, with an acclaimed wind orchestra called ‘Harmonie de L’Union’ from Vendin-Le-Vieil. Despite the language barrier, many longstanding friendships have been formed between Horley and Vimy members.

COMMUNITY

The Sky Isn’t The Limit For Life-Saving The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust is a registered charity that helps sick and injured people in South East England and surrounding areas by providing helicopter emergency medical and air ambulance service for the benefit of the community.

R

esponding to 999 calls 24-hours-a-day, the Surrey team operates from Redhill and their helicopters can fly up to speeds of 150mph reaching the scene of an incident within just 25 minutes of flying time, which is a fraction of the time taken by a ground ambulance. This speed is essential for responses to serious medical traumas with highly skilled pilots employed to land the helicopter in some of the most challenging locations and terrain. The air ambulance has an exceptional team consisting of trained specialist doctors and critical care paramedics that effectively bring the equivalent of an A&E department to the scene of an incident, to ensure that the patient gets the best care. They then transport the patient to the appropriate hospital or unit during the day or night. Before 2013 the charity did not have the capacity to be able to fly at night, but after careful monitoring of the emergency calls, they started doing so in September 2013.

8

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

By Georgia Lambert In partnership with the South East Lions Club, a total of £250,000 was raised for the charity, which enabled them to purchase two fast response vehicles to support the night operation. Since the introduction of night flying, it’s clear that the air ambulance has made a significant difference to the lives and long-term outcomes of the patients that have been treated. Not only can the teams get to the incident quickly, the medical team can administer transfusions of blood and plasma, as well as anaesthetising, controlling haemorrhage and performing chest surgery should they need to.

RH Uncovered

The service has attended more than 25,000 incidents and is available to anyone who needs it. It relies almost entirely on donations to keep the service running and is incredibly grateful for the ongoing support and generosity of the public. The trust has seen a wide variety of fundraising events including walks, runs, races, quiz nights and cake sales all organised by individuals, businesses or groups in the community. It also holds lotteries and chances to win prizes on their website so that you could be a lucky winner of a fantastic prize while supporting life-saving work!

COMMUNITY

Where There Is A Need, There Is A Lion

The Horley Lions Club has been running for more than 50 years and is part of Lions International, where there are 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide. By Georgia Lambert

I

t’s said that whenever a Lions Club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better. Through integrity and energy Lions Clubs thrive and work for their communities, and they are always looking for new members to join their teams – men and women of all ages are welcome. The Lions volunteers raise funds to help those in need, by organising or attending events. The funds can go towards helping those impacted as a result of a natural disasters or simply somebody falling on hard times. The needs are great, and the services are broad including help with health, youth or elderly work, the environment or disaster relief. Lions International started in the United States of America in 1917 and is now the largest service organisation in the world. It’s known for fighting blindness; for example, in the USA, the invention of the white cane is attributed to George A. Bonham of Lions International. In 1930 a Lions member observed a blind man as he attempted to cross the street with a black cane that was barely visible to motorists against the dark pavement. The Lions decided to paint the cane white to make it more visible. The following year the Lions Club International began a programme promoting the white cane as an improved walking aid for the blind, and they continue to work towards the goal of providing vision for all. The Horley Lions have raised £300,000 for people or charities in need and continue to support a handful of charities each year, and the youth project in Horley is being supported right now. The Children’s Trust, Young Epilepsy, football clubs and Scouts are among just some of the organisations that the Lions have supported.

10

RH Uncovered

In 2012, the South East Lion’s launched a project to support and enable night flying capability for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. In two years, £175,000 had been collected through fundraising events, and they have reached their target of £250,000. Two years ago, the Horley Lions took over the big responsibility of running the Bonfire night firework display in the town and raised more than £10,000 for charity. At Christmas last year, the Lions organised for Santa and his sleigh to glide down the streets of Horley and organised 120 food parcels to be donated to those in need, which certainly spread Christmas cheer! In 2017, the Horley Lions are hosting a full calendar of exciting events! We can look forward to a horse show in East Grinstead, a week long skittles tournament in July, a dog show and a Donkey Derby in September. TRAVEL

Wildlife Uncovered There is nothing more exhilarating than watching animals in their natural habitat.

M

y first couple of months as a Travel Counsellor have been amazing. I have learnt so much and really enjoyed meeting local business owners and customers; I have also been lucky enough to book a dream holiday for some of them. Last month’s article was about Travel Counsellors, so now I want to spend the next couple of issues talking about the kind of travel I really love. The travel theme closest to my heart is wildlife, I have been lucky enough to have ticked off a few of my wildlife wish list and here are a few of my favourites.

Gorillas, Uganda Seeing wild gorillas, knowing how endangered and vulnerable they are is an emotional moment, holding your breath as you sit amongst such large primates, so powerful yet gentle. I chose Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda as I could build it into a two week tour with a traditional safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale. Gorilla permits are extremely limited and are £500 per person although this drops to £370 in rainy season (March - May and October/November), this will be built into your trip but always book early as accommodation sells quickly. Tigers, India A rare glimpse of the endangered, wild Royal Bengal Tiger is a special sight. I have had the most luck in Ranthambore (open October June, but don’t go later than April), which is one of the most popular destinations due to its close proximity to Jaipur and ease of building into a Golden Triangle itinerary. This medium sized national park has a good concentration of tigers as well as leopards and other wildlife. The tiger permit system in India is complicated but my top tip is to book as early as possible with your passport details which will give you the best chance of securing your permit in the premier zone. Whale Sharks, Australia and Maldives Whale Sharks can be found in a number of places around the world, inhabiting tropical waters. Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia and the Maldives are iconic destinations to swim with these amazing creatures but tourists are now travelling further afield to tick this off. The average size of an adult whale shark is more than 30 feet and it is certainly an exciting moment the first time you see them underwater. To get a more ‘off the beaten track’ sighting try the Philippines, Pemba in Zanzibar, Mexico or Flores in Indonesia.

Wildebeest, Kenya and Tanzania One of the most amazing spectacles on earth. Millions of wildebeest and other herbivores follow the seasonal rains in a predictable pattern through Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. Direct flights to Nairobi and a choice of safaris to suit most budgets make the Masai Mara the most popular spot for UK visitors. Traditionally, the migration arrives in June and departs to the Serengeti in September, depending on the rain patterns. I would recommend flying out to one of the tented camps such as Governors Camp and pre-booking a trip in a hot-air balloon safari for a unique perspective. Safari in Southern Africa Yes, we have covered the migration In East Africa but Southern Africa is very different. The experiences in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia vary dramatically, from rustic camps and desert dunes to super luxurious lodges and safaris in dug-out canoes. The safari experience doesn’t have to be the entire holiday, perhaps tag on a lodge stay to a self-drive along the Garden Route, a few nights in Cape Town or an adventure in Victoria Falls. Flight connections in the region are getting much better so you can tailor a trip to suit you. So what’s next? I have a lot of wildlife experiences left to see and the list grows all the time. I would love to cruise the Galapagos and stay on the islands, to see the crab migration on Christmas Island which is now very accessible, go back to Japan to see the snow monkeys and also to finally get to Australia to see Ningaloo and the huge crocodiles in the Northern Territories. So, if you would like to build a wildlife experience into your next holiday, get in touch with me. I am a specialist travel agent who is passionate, experienced and can build you a once in a lifetime trip to suit your budget.

Next month Beverley writes about Wonders of the World

PET CARE

Should You Take Your Pet On Holiday? Are you one of the 1.4million people planning on taking your pet on holiday with you this summer? If you’re not sure whether to pack your pooch, cat or even ferret, along with your sun cream and swimwear, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you decide. By Shelley Welti Take your pet if… If you’re hoping to take your furry friend with you on your holiday, there are considerations to think about. Has your pet travelled before? Do you think they would be distressed during the journey? Do you think they would feel more distressed left at home or in boarding? If they would enjoy the adventure of travelling with you and be happier there than at home – take them on the trip! Importantly, whether your pet can come with you on holiday is where you are holidaying and how you are getting there. If you are heading off to a pet-friendly hotel on the coast travelling by car, it will be easier to take your pet with you than if you are jetting off to far-flung shores. There are lots of UK hotels, lodges, caravan parks and campsites that allow pets – do your research before you leave!

Don’t take your pet if… We all know that sometimes even just getting pets in the car for a trip to the vets can be hard enough work, let alone preparing them for a journey taking hours. If you have any concerns at all about your pet’s ability to travel or if they become anxious in new places, it may be best to leave them at home with a trusted pet-sitter or put them into boarding whilst you are away. Ensure that your animal is happy and healthy to travel, it’s vital that your chosen destination is right. Perhaps you are planning on a schedule of days out at theme parks and attractions? Or, you want to lie on the sun-drenched beach? If so, this itinerary may not make your pet happy – especially if they are likely to be left behind at your accommodation without you for most of the day.

Five Minutes with Mike Founder and Owner Mike Potts Why did you decide to get ISO accreditation? “The reason we decided to get accreditation is that although we receive a lot of customer testimonials and a high retention rate we couldn’t qualify this but an accreditation does. We want to take the next step to improving where we are and lead us to being a better business.”

What does the accreditation mean? “All of our business procedures from start to finish were independently audited by management system specialists CQS. The award recognises S4B Document Solutions commitment to an exceptional quality of service and customer focus as well as compliance.”

How does the accreditation help offer customers peace of mind? “We’re experts in the secure storage and ultimate secure destruction. The ISO grading we’ve achieved is a global benchmark for quality and means we’re at the forefront of our industry and all destruction work we carry out for example is followed-up with a certificate of destruction.”

Who can you help? “We work with businesses of all sizes from large to small. We can offer a price comparison with your existing storage provider, so contact our friendly and reliable team. We offer the highest possible service level and our staff are comprehensively screened and CRB checked.’ “Contact us for a no-obligation quote. HOMES

Simple Ways To Make Your Home Allergy-Friendly Increasing numbers of us are suffering from allergies associated with the home; tackling allergy causes can be easier than you may think. This month we’ve got tips for trying to keep allergens at bay and ways in which you might be able to reduce pollen and dust which all too often lead to allergies. By Jacob White Avoid chemicals If you or a member of your family suffers from allergies, it is a good idea to avoid harsh chemicals like ammonia when you buy cleaning products. Some furniture polishes, detergents and fabric softeners contain chemicals which can exacerbate an allergy. Instead, opt for eco-friendly products, or even make your own! Using kitchen stock items such as baking soda, vinegar and lemon you can really clean-up! Thorough cleaning You don’t need to be a Kim or Aggie from TV show How Clean Is Your House? However, if you do suffer from an allergy, it is worth cleaning your home thoroughly once or twice a week. When buying a vacuum cleaner, look out for a quality high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filter which has a far higher success rate of picking up tiny allergens that other vacuums often simply disturb but not fully gather up. Reduce clutter At any time of year but especially during the pollen season, it is a good idea to clear away as much clutter as possible. That can be extra cushions, boxes of clothes or other items which take up space and gather dust – by making space you can make it more difficult for allergens to attach themselves.

Dust properly Dusting is a simple but effective way of ridding the home of allergens, however, for it to be a success you need to do it properly. Try using a damp cloth so that allergens can stick to the cloth instead of lifting the cloth into the air only to fall back down onto the surface which you have just ‘cleaned’. Stay pollen-free During the hay fever season, it is important to keep the level of pollen you transfer to your home down as it’s likely you’re in-and-out of the home. One quick fix is placing a doormat outside your front door and ask guests to take their shoes off as they enter your home. It’s a good idea to change your clothes when you get home from work or a day out as pollen can settle on clothes and be transferred easily.

Window management It’s challenging to predict the pollen that you or someone in your house is allergic to. It’s best to manage when to and not to open your windows. As a general rule plants pollinate between 5.00am and 9.00am, so it is a good idea to close windows at those times and open them at sunset when the levels of pollen are at their lowest. If possible use air-conditioning units during the hay fever season to avoid allergens. Pet care Allergens like dust and pollen settle on animal fur which means as soon as the animals come indoors so do the allergens.

Before letting pets in, the best thing to do is to give your pet a thorough brush and make sure you vacuum your home at least a couple of times a week and avoid pets in your bedroom.

once every six months. If you have children, think about washing their soft, cuddly toys regularly as these can collect and harbour allergens in the bedroom and wider home.

Clean bedroom With most of us sleeping anything between six and nine hours a day, it’s important to minimise the allergens in our bedroom. During the height of hay fever season make sure you wash your sheets at least once a week in hot water and dry them indoors.Your mattresses collect dust – home for dust mites which cause severe allergies. Make sure you professionally clean your mattresses at least

Mould-free bathrooms To prevent a lot of allergies from triggering keep your bathroom clean and mould-free – scrub tiles regularly and make sure to regularly clean the shower curtains. Good quality shower curtains can be washed in a washing machine, and it is a smart idea to towel-dry the bathtub and wet areas once you’ve used it to prevent mould from building up and it will also help to keep the air from being too humid.

GARDENS

The Green, Green, Grass (The Grass Can Be Greener…)

Now is the perfect time to kick-start lawn care as the grass awakens from the dormant winter period, by following some simple steps, you can help maintain healthy grass which looks and feels great! By Russell Cobley

B

efore you plan anything, take a few minutes to inspect your lawn, it is likely you will have a mix of moss and weeds, and you may also have bare or yellowish brown patches these symptoms suggest you need to undertake lawn maintenance. Mowing Your lawn will benefit from mowing as it helps make the lawn thicken up. Don’t be tempted to mow when the ground conditions are wet or frosty. Ensure that your mower blades are sharp and set high for the first cut. Take no more than one third off the length of the grass each cut until you reach the height of around 2” for most domestic lawns. Cutting too short, either in one go, or gradually, will damage the lawn. If you have moss in your lawn, mow at least ½” above moss height and mow shaded areas 50% higher than non-shady areas. Feeding Your lawn requires nutrients in spring sold as granular or liquid lawn fertiliser from garden centres. Do not over feed as you can damage the grass or encourage too much growth too soon, resulting in a lot of mowing and a less dense lawn. Aeration Over time the soil in your lawn will become compacted, limiting

32

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

nutrients, air and water from reaching the grass roots, leading to an unhealthy lawn. You can aerate using a garden fork or hire a mechanical aerator, this may also aid lawn drainage too. Moss & Weeds Our climate promotes moss that will gradually take over the lawn. Weeds are likely to be present this time of year and will start growing. If you tackle them early, you can keep them at bay. Moss can be raked out and weeds removed by hand picking or weed killer. Scarification An essential maintenance task to remove moss and dead grass from the lawn, allowing more water, air and nutrients to reach the soil surface and making the grass healthier. You can purchase moss remover in garden centres and manually rake out a few days later. You can hire a mechanical scarifier to make the job easier. Be prepared for some hard work and do not scarify earlier than March or later than May as the lawn will not recover quickly. After, it’s recommended to apply grass seed to fill in the many gaps left.

Alternatively, replace the areas with new grass seed or turf. Grass will struggle in shady areas, so consider cutting back overhanging vegetation or using shade tolerant seed or turf to replace the patchy lawn areas. Seeding Now is a good time to put down grass seed over your existing lawn, to thicken it up. Seeding can also be used where a lawn has bare or dry patches. Seed requires good soil contact, warmth (8oC+) and constant moisture for at least 24 days to have a chance of germinating. Water daily in the morning or late evening. Lawn Care Companies If you are unsure of what to do, have tried the DIY approach or lack the time, consider speaking to your local lawn care company, who can offer expert advice on your lawn’s condition, recommend a weed and feed treatment plan, including specialist labour saving machinery to undertake aeration and scarification.

Patches & Bare Areas Cutting your grass too short, shade, animal urine or lack of water are some causes of patches. They are cured by aerating the soil, fertilising and regularly watering.

New or Nearly New Thinking about a new car? What do you choose? New, or nearly new?

I

By Ben Morley

f you have been fortunate enough to have a brand new car, there is no feeling like it. The knowledge that no one other than a salesman, a delivery driver, and perhaps a workshop technician carrying out tests has driven the car before. I do not deny that it’s a great feeling. What’s not such a great feeling is how much the value of it drops as soon as it leaves the showroom. If you’re planning on keeping it for a long time, this is of little consequence, but if you’re not planning on keeping it that long, straight away you need to think about the cost. It might be worth looking at a pre-registered car or perhaps one that’s already a year or so old and someone else has effectively thrown their couple of grand down the drain and not yours! Not to mention the new taxation bands that come into effect this year.

The first year’s road tax could set you back a fair whack, depending on what you buy and after the first year, it’s a nice round figure for the rest of the car’s life. There is the current trend for getting yourself a car on personal contract purchase (PCP) to consider. Yes, you get a nice new car and all the bells and whistles that are thrown in to entice you to buy, but there is only really one winner in that situation. A cynic might say that those that opt for PCP may regret it the next time our country finds itself in a credit crunch. Personally, I’m a great believer in older is better. Take my lovely next-door neighbour, for example. She owns her car, she’s loved and cared for it all of its life, and some 15 years later, it’s still going strong and in fine fettle. Take a brand new car, complete with more than 100

electronic modules that are bound to go wrong. To change a headlamp bulb on the 15-year-old car is a five-minute job. I know that on a new version, the same job would set you back more than £400 at a main agent. So in the question new or nearly new, I would opt for nearly new every time, though don’t be wooed by third party warranty schemes, they are rarely worth the paper that they are written on, always opt for manufacturer-backed used car warranties. • VW/Audi Group Specialists • Servicing & Repairs • Expert Diagnostic Fault-finding • Performance Upgrades • IMI Master Technician • 15 Years Experience • Other Makes Welcome • Collection By Arrangement PROFESSIONAL REGISTER

Sensational Outdoor Pursuits For Summer

With summer just around the corner, we’ve got some sensational outdoor pursuits for you to enjoy as the days get longer, warmer and sunnier! Let’s get outdoors and make summer 2017 sensational! By Jacob White Segway The two-wheeled, self-balancing craze shows no sign of relenting. Whether it’s for sightseeing whilst visiting your favourite city and letting the wheels take the strain; a fast, fun and challenging off-road adventure ride or as some police forces across the globe have discovered, used as a way of fighting crime on busy streets, Segway is here to stay. If you want to take on the off-road adventure sessions, they usually last around 45 minutes and allow you the chance to test yourself against different riding zones. If you’ve got a competitive streak, it’s a very good idea for team building with work colleagues or a high-octane stag or hen weekend event.

Mountain Biking Sussex and Surrey might not offer you any mountains but can provide you with some brilliant dirt tracks, and they’re a wonderful way to get fit and get at one with nature. Cycling to work is one thing, but the challenge of going off-road is something altogether different, challenging yourself against all sorts of undulating terrain on your own or in a group.

Rock Climbing Looking for an uphill challenge? What greater one is there than scaling a rocky crag? With the correct equipment, this pursuit can be huge fun whether going solo or as part of a group. As well as fun it offers great health benefits with cardiovascular and hand-eye co-ordination – the options are vast so whether you have a head-for-heights or not, you’ll find something.

Footgolf Love football? Love golf? Maybe you love both? If so, what better way to combine the two than footgolf? There is already a growing community of golfers and footballers who have discovered it! Special courses are available where you’ll have a ball but there are no clubs required! You will be able to experience an eighteen hole course much like a regular golf course that caters for both beginners and experienced players what makes it fun is that it is open to boys or girls and players of all ages. So, get ready to merge the two great sports for a morning or afternoon of fun! Paintball A favourite outdoor pursuit which dates back to the 1980s – the dye-filled attack and capture strategy game is as popular as ever. What better way to let your competitive streak rise to the surface than to ‘fight’ over territory?! The game is great fun for working out strategy and for character building. With the right safety equipment, you can have fun whilst taking aim at friends or family!

STYLE

Wedding Fever!

Planning your wedding can be a minefield – take it from a recent bride who has been there, got the dress, cake and the ring! Here are some tips and tricks to steer you through wedding planning! By Shelley Welti Start planning early Whether you have got two years or six months until your big day the time to start planning is now! Sit down with your other half and discuss how you want your wedding day to be and how much you can afford to make your dream day a reality. Once you’ve agreed on a date, send out your invitations, so that family and friends know the date.

42

Don’t be swayed This may sound simple, but with so much choice on wedding blogs and in magazines, not to mention family and friends making suggestions, it’s easy to veer off track and end up wondering where the wedding you were planning went. It’s YOUR wedding, make sure it’s as original as you two and represents your personalities. If you don’t want bridesmaids, don’t have them. If the thought of a big, formal wedding scares you, stay small and be happy. Stay true to who you are. What works for a friend or celebrity may not work for you.

Trust your suppliers Once you have invested in your suppliers, it’s important to let go and trust them to work their magic on the big day. Have a pre-wedding meeting with your photographer, videographer, caterer, florist and venue co-ordinator to ensure that they know what you want. It will help them to understand your vision but don’t forget it is their job; they are the professionals!

Stick to budget With the average UK wedding now costing £25,000, it’s important to set a budget at the beginning and stick to it. Although you may not think it possible, there are a few ways to keep costs down. A wedding in January or November can cost half than the same wedding planned for July or August. Venues and wedding suppliers are in less demand during winter months so take advantage! If a quote is more than you’d hoped for, negotiation is still an option. Compromise with them and work towards the original budget you had in mind – all it takes is an honest conversation, it’s worth trying!

Try and enjoy every moment Speak to any recent bride or groom, and they will tell you one thing - enjoy yourself! In the final few weeks when there’s so much going on, it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed out, but it does fly by and before you know it the big day has come and gone – and then you’ll be wishing you could do it all over again! On the day, if you can, try to escape for a few minutes with your husband or wife and just treasure the moment of being married and hearing your nearest and dearest all having a fantastic time in the distance! Someone suggested it to me, and it was one of my most favourite memories from my wedding day!

Choosing A Home From Home

When it comes to the care we choose for our loved ones it is natural to want to do everything possible to make sure their needs are met and they will be happy with the choice. What do you need to consider when you are choosing a home from home for your loved one? By Jacob White o help you choose an ideal home from home you need to arm yourself with some questions to ask the care home providers. If the home is going to be a genuine home from home you need to be sure they can offer the creature comforts your loved one has become used to. As well as care, it is important to think about activities that your loved one enjoys and whether these can be continued – is your mum green-fingered? Is your dad a dog-lover? Find that home from home.

T

Checking A Care Home When considering a care home there are three important steps: Check care home inspection reports There are four watchdogs charged with inspecting and reporting on care providers, their reports are publically available and the best source is the Care Quality Commission, to learn more about the body and for its listings, see: www.cqc.org.uk Ask friends and family for recommendations Do you know someone who has a friend or relative already in a care home? A recommendation from a resident or acquaintance is always helpful! Visit the care homes, most offer open days Try to visit homes, whether an open day which is open to the public or if you need to make a private appointment to meet the care home manager. When you do visit try to get as much information as you can on the care home

Industry Opinion Pramojil Kurian, General Manager of Barchester Healthcare’s Reigate Beaumont Care Home, says: “A good care home works closely with individuals and their families to ensure each person settles in quickly and feels at home straight away. Questions around lifestyle are just as important as questions around care when it comes to helping people feel at home.’ “My whole team are trained to understand the importance of giving person-centred care and ensuring residents are living life their way, and even as people’s care needs change, this approach remains the same.”

What makes a house a home? Questions to ask: Is there a garden, and can residents get involved?

If gardening has brought great joy to someone’s life over the years or just in retirement it can be important to keep this hobby alive. Increasing numbers of care homes have gardens and are now letting green-fingered residents get their spades out.

Can residents keep their beloved pet?

Pets can be a much-loved member of any family, especially when someone becomes widowed. Some care homes recognise the health benefits of pets for residents with certain conditions and the emotional benefits of residents being allowed to keep their beloved pets with them.

What social life is there?

Although some care is needed it doesn’t mean that there is not room for some socialising. The social activities open to residents can vary greatly; from guest speakers, day trips to places of interest and in-home exhibitions.

Is there a space for a computer in the room and is there an Internet connection?

A computer can be invaluable for things like Skype and Facebook for communicating with family (especially the grandchildren) and friends.

Is there a telephone point in the room or somewhere private phone calls may be made? Whether your loved one has a mobile phone or not they may like a landline. Many care homes provide a telephone point in the resident’s room.
