Every month, we talk to over one hundred thousand South of England households – Do you want to talk to them too? These days, the options for marketing your business are almost limitless. A few years ago, all most people did was chuck a listing in the Yellow Pages, join a local networking group and rely on word of mouth. In the 21st century, the landscape’s changed, a lot. New media’s come in, in a big way; and every few months there’s a new ‘shiny object’ that’s described as ‘the one thing that businesses must do’. At Mantra Magazines, we’ve got an alternative. Because, whilst Facebook and Google are important, every single month we can testify to the fact that print advertising is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving.
Over the last 10 years I’ve really built up a good rapport with RH Uncovered and I really trust what they do for me, so on that basis I really wouldn’t feel that I would go anywhere else Tim Burberry, Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating
They are very easy to talk to, nothing is ever too much trouble and they get things right, first time. There is no stress involved in dealing with them. They know what I want and return something that is pretty much perfect Greg Fergusson Fergussons Auto Services,
Every single year since we started out, our business has grown; and there’s a simple reason for that: businesses want to reach out to their prospects in a way that’s genuine, trustworthy and builds relationships. The fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more difficult to do that online, when your prospect doesn’t get to retain your message, dwell on it and decide whether it’s for them or not. For strong, long-lasting and profitable relationships with your target market, print advertising is still where it’s at, and given that advertising with our magazines can give you access to over 100,000 homes, that’s no surprise. Call us today on 01342 718348 for more details on how we can help you.

Brickbox Surveys Helping you make an informed decision about the home you want to buy
Your home is likely to be the biggest investment of your life, yet many buyers do not commission an independent survey on its condition.
Do I really need a survey? ‘Which?’ magazine found that for those people who did not get a survey, on average, one in four had to spend £2,500 to put serious defects right which would have been identified in a condition report. For one in ten people it was over £10,000. By contrast those that did get a proper survey were able to negotiate a reduction in the price of the property that averaged £2,000.
Home Condition Survey Carried out by an experienced, fully qualified, accredited and insured residential property surveyor. It gives you a plain English, professional report on the condition of the property using a simple 1/2/3 condition rating, annotated photographs and a jargon free approach. We offer a fast, comprehensive and competitive service to inspect your new home for all the major defects which are likely to affect your decision to purchase.
Benefits include Peace of Mind
• Identifies major problems • Highlights areas of possible concern that need further investigation • Help you to plan for future expenditure

Surrey’s First World War History Preserved In Tapestry In April 2015, Riverhouse Barn launched a community stitch project to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, and the important role of the Mount Felix Hospital in Walton on Thames during the battle and throughout the First World War. April 25, marks the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand forces - ANZAC, fighting on the Gallipoli peninsular against the Ottoman Empire.

NZAC Day, held on April 25 is now a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, that broadly commemorates all ANZACS who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The Mount Felix Hospital (New Zealand General Hospital) was established for soldiers from New Zealand, who were wounded at Gallipoli and later battles. Between 1915 and 1919, 27,000 soldiers passed through the military hospital, which was once a large mansion with 18 acres of ground. According to newspaper from the time, rehabilitation life at Mount Felix was a welcomed break from fighting. As soldiers got better, they were encouraged to take part in sports, regattas and festivities. The nearby Thames was used for fun events like sports days with mixed teams of patients and nurses. The team at the project researched real life stories of soldiers who were treated at the hospital. They traced their journey from New Zealand, through to fighting at Gallipoli, to their being wounded and being brought to Mount Felix. They identified three stories of soldiers who met and fell in love with their future
wives during their time in hospital, along with other stories from the nurses, doctors and members of Walton’s community. This narrative has been beautifully illustrated by Andrew Crummy, who previously designed the Prestonpans Tapestry, a 104m long, community stitch project in Scotland. His Mount Felix illustrations form a tapestry of 44 panels that were created by an army of more than 600 volunteer stitchers from all walks of life - including, ex-soldiers, WI members, school children, embroiders, nurses and even the wife of the New Zealand High Commissioner stitched a panel it was truly a community effort. The stories depicted are of powerful tales of courage and love, the power of community, friendship and family. Preserved in stitch is the story of a community taking in wounded soldiers, far from home, into their hearts and their homes. The finished tapestry was displayed in the Robert Phillips Gallery in April 2017 and it is currently hanging at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre in Walton. The team at the project decided to start a crowdfunder page to raise enough money to be able to tour the magnificent tapestry, as far afield as New

Zealand, where some of the tapestry has been stitched and where the descendants of the soldiers and nurses who passed through Mount Felix Hospital now live. The team need to raise enough money to keep the stories alive and the target is £30,000 which will give them enough money to frame, store, manage the tour and provide transport.

The Sky Is The Limit With The Air Training Corps
What does Tom Fletcher from McFly, Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones and BBC journalist Laura Trevelyan have in common? All three people were once devoted members of the Air Training Corps (ATC) which is a volunteer, youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Air Force.
A
re you the sort of person who likes a challenge, or someone who isn’t afraid of getting stuck in? Then joining the air cadets might be the perfect opportunity for you! Being a cadet is about learning through practical experience in the outdoors. A cadet gets the chance to take part in activities that offer challenge, excitement, adventure and knowledge which will be picked up along the way through lectures and experience. As part of a squadron, cadets get the chance to go camping at RAF and Army bases throughout the UK and overseas, where they learn survival skills in a team and adventure training in the field. If you have always wanted to learn to fly, there are opportunities to get airborne and take up flying and gliding, with the ultimate goal of having a solo flight at the end of your training. These are just some of the activities you could be participating in, along with canoeing, abseiling and getting the chance to play team sports up to National level - the list is endless, and there is more!

By Georgia Lambert Whatever level, cadets have the opportunity to try their hand at military skills and drills, including shooting and gain great experiences and new skills. The benefits to cadets are that they take away real qualifications that will set them apart from the crowd when they head to university or begin their chosen career. Cadets can go for gold with the Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award scheme, which employers everywhere recognise as a great achievement, and their mission is simple – to inspire, guide and support young people in their self-development and recognise their achievements. To put it another way, they help you succeed. With the same sense of adventure that the Air Cadets offer, D of E Award takes one through a programme of activities that will leave one a more confident, motivated and capable person. Another valuable qualification that will
build on confidence and ability to deal with all different kinds of people is leadership training and one that will save lives - first-aid training from St John’s Ambulance. Equality is a central part of the Air Force’s ethic, the cadet experience is open to everyone, so whatever your background or ability and whether you are male or female, if you are between the ages of 12 and 17-years-old you can apply to be a cadet. If you are older than that but would like to take part in the opportunities that cadets provide, you may join as an adult volunteer. The aims of the ATC are - to promote and encourage, among young people, a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force. To provide training which will be useful in the services, and, in civilian life and to foster the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of good leadership and good citizenship.

The challenge was more of a challenge considering Sallyann has the conditions fibromyalgia and arthritis. The challenge was Sallyann’s fifth large charity walk in three years, she says: “I do these walks to not only challenge myself but to give back to charities that are in need of funds but also to inspire others with invisible illnesses to not give up on themselves. 16 years of fibromyalgia and I was always told no I can’t do this or that and friends that don’t understand just what it is like to live with fibromyalgia who stop inviting you out or talking to you because every time they invite you, you don’t have the energy after work to then go – but thanks to supportive doctors, specialists and pain clinics, I’ve learnt that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” She added: “If it wasn’t for Finch’s support I couldn’t do this, he is a legend at keeping me going. We did a 25km walk last year and it was brutal, but he kept me going. He’s always happy if I get the beers in at the end!” For more information about Sallyann and Finch’s fundraising, or to donate to their fundraising, visit their JustGiving Page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ sallyann-richardson37 Surrey’s Best Commuter Towns And Villages For Buyers On A Budget Named The county’s best commuter towns and villages for buyers on a budget have been named in a report in the Evening Standard with Horley topping the

list alongside Staines and Guildford for value for money homes in Surrey. As prices in many of towns and villages reach or exceed London levels, new arrivals are increasingly buying into its better-value options, where they can enjoy a fast commute and the Surrey Hills, without the million pound prices. Horley, on the doorstep of London Gatwick Airport, has emerged as a successful location with average prices surging 48% in the past five years, to more than £355,000. According to the report, the town’s appeal is not simply affordability, there is a choice of well-regarded schools, and trains to London Victoria taking about 45 minutes journey time, with season tickets costing from £3,268. James Richards, sales manager at White & Sons estate agents, says Horley has grown in strength as commuters priced out of Redhill and Reigate look elsewhere. Tributes Paid To Former Horley Councillor Former Horley councillor Barbara Hall, who died in May received dozens of tributes from friends, former colleagues and the wider community. The former Reigate and Banstead Borough councillor passed away at Wykeham House nursing home in Horley aged 83. In the last five years of her life, Barbara suffered from mild vascular dementia – she died peacefully on Saturday, May 20.

Use a lazy summer’s day to tell them all about who they are and the people who have shaped your family. You could even start to create a family tree!

A Small Joint Replacement that makes a Big Difference
By Oliver Harley, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon MBBS, BSc, MBA, FRCSEd(Plastic Surgery)
D
id you know that it is possible to do joint replacements for fingers? You probably know at least one person who has had a hip or a knee replacement for arthritis. Similar technology, on a much smaller scale, is available for finger joints which become painful as a result of arthritis. The hands are a very common place to get arthritis due to them consisting of 27 bones each separated with cartilage. The most frequently affected joints are those in the fingers. However, a finger joint replacement is much less common than hip and knee replacements due to the miniature size of the of finger joints. Despite this, the pay off for a patient suffering from severe arthritis can make this a very worthwhile option for treatment. There are three joints in each finger - the joint at the base of the finger, the joint in the middle of the finger, the joint closest to the fingertip. Arthritis can affect any of these three joints, it can affect a single joint on a single finger or several joints and fingers. It will cause various combinations of pain, deformity and loss of movement. This pain and loss of movement can have a serious impact on everyday life and make simple tasks such as making a cup of tea or writing very difficult. Arthritis is typically easy to diagnose based on the symptoms and the appearance of the finger. X-rays help to confirm the diagnosis. Arthritis pain is often noted for the first time after a minor knock or sprain which takes longer than expected to settle down. Before considering surgery painful finger joints may respond to painkillers applied as creams or taken by mouth. Pain killing injections (steroids) may be given directly into joints in clinic when you see a hand specialist at The McIndoe Centre or The Horder Centre. If pain persists despite the use of painkillers it may be time to think about an operation which offers long term pain relief in at least 90% of cases. The decision to get a finger joint replacement is largely down to the level of pain caused and how much this impacts on everyday life.

There are two types of operation which are helpful for arthritic fingers: Fusing the joint (arthrodesis) or joint replacement (arthroplasty). These are day case operations which can usually be done by ‘awake surgery’ using local anaesthetic. The artificial joint is made of silicon plastic is similar to a miniature artificial knee joint in appearance. Some patients will have more than one finger joint replacement in a single operation. A small incision is made in the finger and the damaged joint is removed. The artificial joint is inserted and cemented into place. It functions in the same way as a healthy joint, a bit like a hinge on a door, although, the movement is typically about half the range in a healthy joint. Alternatively, fusing the joint means that it is set in a fixed position and no further movement is possible. Both types of operation reliably remove the pain from arthritis but of course have different results regarding the freedom of movement in the hand. After surgery, some hand physiotherapy is necessary for several weeks and protective splints are often required during this period but typically these may be removed at times to do light activities as well as physiotherapy exercises. After about 8-10 weeks patients should be able to resume usual activities including golf, tennis and gardening, for example. Mr Oliver Harley is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in both cosmetic and hand surgery. He has clinics at The Horder Centre in Crowborough (hands) and at The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead. How Can An Osteopath Help Your Sporting Life?
Whether you are an athlete or cricketer drawing the season to a close, or a footballer or rugby player gearing up for the new season, how can an osteopath help make sure that you are match-fit and ready to go? Also, what can they do to help you post-match to make sure you feel a sense of wellbeing? By Jacob White
P
laying sport and doing regular exercise is good for your health, but sometimes sport can result in injuries caused by a fall or heavy blow, not warming up properly, using inappropriate equipment or poor technique or pushing yourself too hard. Almost any part of the body can be injured including the muscles, bones, joints and tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The most commonly affected areas vulnerable to both summer and winter sports injuries are the ankles and the knees. What Is Osteopathy And How Can Osteopaths Help? Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging muscles and joints based on the principle that health and wellbeing is based on bones, muscles, ligaments and tissues working together. An osteopath’s aim is to: • Increase the mobility of joints • Relieve muscle tension • Enhance blood supply to tissue • Help the body heal An osteopath can help with: • Lower back pain • Neck pain • Shoulder pain • Arthritis • Problems with the pelvis, hips and legs

RH Uncovered
Does osteopathy work? Many patients argue that it does work and it is especially effective in treating persistent lower back pain and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the treatment for those with the condition. Who can treat me in osteopathy? Osteopathy is not widely available on the NHS but your GP should be able to tell you whether it is available in your area but most patients pay for osteopathy treatment privately with treatment costs varying for different sessions. You do not need to be referred by your GP to see a private osteopath, a top tip is that most private health insurers provide cover for osteopathic treatment but do see your policy for more details. Importantly, when you are looking for an osteopath, only practitioners registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) are allowed to practise as osteopaths or call themselves osteopaths.

Smartphone Apps To Save You Money On Your Car Insurance
Ever get the feeling that you are being watched? If you have got a smartphone, you probably are! That is a conversation for another day, however, thanks to technology, younger drivers are now able to get apps on their phone to help reduce their insurance premiums.
T
he technology means you can get an app that will sit somewhere between Angry Birds and Snap Chat - other apps are available, that will monitor what you are up to behind the wheel and then, taking circumstances into consideration score your driving accordingly. Using GPS technology the Octo U app tracks the driver’s speed, braking, cornering and acceleration. While it is doing this, it keeps an eye on what time of day it is and what the weather and traffic are like, and possibly even what you are listening to on the radio. After 100 hours of driving the app sends your score to your insurance company – the
By Ben Morley aim of the game, this is what it has become now, is to get a good score. Unlike a real driving game, you do not win by driving fast, the better you drive, the better the score is. A better score helps to reduce your insurance premiums, and Octo U reports that by using this app, drivers could save up to 30% on their annual car insurance premiums. Quite a lot when you consider that the average under-25-yearold pays around £1,700 for insurance. The app is free, however, it cannot tell if it is you or a friend driving, so if you have any mates that are bad drivers, leave your phone at home for that journey. Currently, only three

GARDENS
Designing A Child-Friendly Garden For children the summer holidays and the garden go hand-in-hand – a great place for smashing balls around, running about with the dog, or having friends round for fun and games. However, this can be at odds with the view of a garden to parents or grandparents, so, what can you do to help this? By Jacob White
F
or most families, the first area of priority is somewhere to relax, eat or entertain outside - a sitting area where you can put out garden furniture and set up the barbecue is the answer, screened off with a low hedge, or some heavy containers, filled with easy-going plants – herbs are a good choice. Most people make their seating area close to the house, usually right outside patio doors where it is convenient but when the back of the house is in shade for most of the day, it is often better to put the seating area further down the garden, where it catches the sun for the longest amount of time. Think about a dedicated play area which relieves the adult garden of a lot of wear and tear. If you are looking to mark out sports pitches or place climbing frames or a playhouse use a ground surface with hard-wearing rye-grass or bark chippings. A lock-up garden chest is a good idea for garden toys. To prevent balls, dogs or small children in neighbours’ gardens, plant banks of shrubs around boundaries. Choose hardy varieties such forsythia or philadelphus, avoiding prickly ones such as berberis or pyracantha. Other ideas include climbers such as honeysuckle or thornless blackberry. The adult area of the garden is where you can house the more delicate features such as perennial flowerbeds, container garden, raised flowerbeds, greenhouse or decorative vegetable patch. These are best safely separated from the places children play by a soft barrier that is ball and bike proof!
34

RH Uncovered
A row of fruit trees, a hedge or an ornamental tree and shrub border makes an attractive and at the same time, practical divider. Alternatively, use ornamental trellis with climbers. If limited for space, a row of woven hazel or heather panels with an arch through into your next area does the trick! A child-friendly garden does not have to remain the same, keep it under review. As the children grow older, you might like to replace the play area and introduce an area for them to find a quiet space for them to complete their homework or meet friends in a relaxed and safe environment.
Play It Safe!
A good place to position a play area is the far end of the garden, but depending on the age of the children you might like the area closer to keep an eye on them. Remember, for their safety to keep gates locked and check for hazards including poisonous plants or garden tools and chemicals. One of the biggest dangers is the much-loved garden pond, however shallow – a toddler can easily fall in.

HOMES
How To Create The Perfect Guest Room The summer holidays are here and the number of guests passing through the home is up, but just how do you create the perfect guest room? Here are some ideas to make your guest feel at home! By Jacob White
W
hether you are hosting friends, your mother-in-law or your parents are spending the summer holidays with you to help with childcare, or if it is your children returning home from university for the summer, what simple additions can you make to a spare room make sure it has a wow factor? Bags of Books One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else’s home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have wall-shelving or a bookcase, stock with a variety of good quality reading that appeals to all tastes. Do not forget to add some bright bedside lamps or reading lights! Case Closed Add a fold-up luggage stand, this hotel-inspired touch saves guests from having to squat on the floor to rifle through their suitcases for items. Make sure it is accessible and ready at the foot of the bed. Accessorise Whether you put them in the bathroom or in the bedroom, little extras make guests feel special. Taking more inspiration from hotel visits - include toiletries and niceties in case of forgotten items such as mini toothpaste, an extra toothbrush, emery boards and small bottles of hand lotion.

Pillow Delight Some like them flat, some like them fluffy. Keep a range of pillows ready to satisfy guests’ individual tastes and do not forget to invest in tasteful blankets, you never know with the British weather! Get Hooked Your guests will not have a designated spot in your home to tuck away jumpers, purses and car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks on the backs of doors, or in easily accessible areas of their guest room. Remember to have plenty of coat hangers available for outdoor clothes. Say It With Flowers There is nothing as welcoming as freshly cut flowers, keep the arrangement simple though. Stick a few cut blooms from your garden in a jug for a fresh

and vibrant welcome but try to avoid flowers with overpowering scents that can lead to headaches. Do not forget about guests with allergies! Right On Time Ensure that guests do not miss a planned activity, or breakfast by placing a small clock in their room, whether just for them to keep time, or for them to set the alarm for an early morning wake-up call. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall… Hang a mirror, large or small in the room to provide the perfect spot for your guest to comb their hair, touch up makeup or put on jewellery. If space allows, a long dressing mirror is an even better addition for guests who have a sense of style and want to look tip-tip from head to toe this summer.
