SOCIAL DINNER_ What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it and who is at the table, is a form of communication, rich with meaning and interaction. Architectural design, relative to creating spectacular meal experiences, has a higher purpose of developing social relations and supporting cultural development.

SPACE ORGANIZATION_ The plan is organized by three orthogonal rectangles, creating different spatial units. At their intersection, is placed a dinning core, the central element of the composition. The idea of the core is emphasised by a wooden structure that both separates and interlinks functions and sensations, and also provides the space with controllable natural light, while creating a filter of privacy. Its form derives from the shape of the dinning core. The horizontal surface creates an arch-shaped form on the ceiling, eliminating the overall height and “embracing” the users. The vertical surfaces host a ‘green area’ with herbs used “from garden to plate” and also, a small deli store with products used in the menu.

With our gastronomical growth will come, inevitably, knowledge and perception of a hundred other things, but mainly ourselves. M.F.K. Fisher

The design is based upon the creation of a dining core, where all users have direct contact with the chef and each other. The “consumption” and “preparation”areas are unified. Therefore, a single surface is designed so as to provide a visual perspective in order to promote interaction. Thus, communication is achieved at two levels: social and educational. Educational because the diners can participate actively during the food preparation, either by helping the chef or just by watching the whole process as a kind of cooking class seminar.

THE SHELL [2017] National Design Competition by the Hellenic Republic w/ Michael Kantartzis, Nikiforos Tolis

The concept of protection in conjunction with the marine environment of a cruise terminal was the starting point for the design of this project, leading to the archaic symbol of protection in the marine environment, the shell. The dual character of the shell, its small opening in its communication with the external environment and its clear and emblematic form, reflects the intension for a metonymic approach of these notions to the architectural practice.

The main design principles are related to: _ The functional organization of the building, in terms of security

provisions and relationships between the different uses.

_ The environmental approach and the sustainability of the building. _ The design of the green areas and their particular relationship with

the other elements of the building.

_ The aesthetic of the building in terms of form, color and texture. _ The specific demands in the design of the metal framework.

_ The economy of the deign solution, in terms of a feasible construction.

EXPERIENTIAL BEER GARDEN [2017] YAC International Design Competition w/ Nikiforos Tolis, Efi Stathopoulou, Panos Charvalakis

A SECOND GARDEN_ The most pronounced element of Villa Zarri is its garden and thus, is where our proposal is oriented. Instead of stopping at the border of the former cellar, the garden now slopes into the building, creating a new level, three meters below the existing ground. The new garden traverses the building, creating different situations and serving the needs of the surrounding utilities.

A NEW LEVEL_ To make air for the new garden, the most dense uses (tasting hall, restaurant) are elevated three meters above the garden, in form of platforms, connected with each other by walkways. The tasting hall is developed linearly, traversing the whole length of the building and connecting the quiet garden of Villa Zarri with the more urban south facade of the building. The platform gives visitors the opportunity of a closer look into the brewing laboratory.

THE GRID_ The existing structural system that supports the roof, creates a sense of repetition and vastness of space. The grid of columns and beams, along with its subdivisions , becomes the main drawing tool. Thus, it can be perceived everywhere in our proposal, as it contracts, expands and even stretches beyond the walls, and into the garden by means of benches, gazebos and other light structures.

URBAN NODE / TRANSITORY SPACE_ The main entrance is designed in form of an arc, following the architecture of the existing roof, while indicating the expansion of the building towards the roundabout. A dedicated driveway allows for visitors to reach the entrance and then descend into the reception and the shopping area. In order to project the building further out and closer to the free-ways, an additional structurally lighter, row and column of roofs is created. The new south and east façades are now transparent, giving passengers a fleeting glimpse of the inside.

COMPETITION

Therefore, by utilizing the tools of vertical movement, transparency, ambiance and landscaping the building becomes more than a place for beer lovers; it is now a transitory space between the busy urban and the leisurely rural, an experience which educates, entertains and above all, relaxes. It is an “experiential beer garden” by all means.

ROOM 18 [2016] DOMÉS European Design Competition w/ Nikiforos Tolis, Efi Stathopoulou

Room 18 is a competition aiming to the exploration of the architecture of hospitality. During this period of standardisation and uniformity, we are in search of variety and individuation which will respond to the special needs of the contemporary traveller. The HOT(ΕΛ) room changes its “content” and is transformed into an autonomous core, offering “in house” services to its users. This proposal aims to create an open plan space, but with distinct functional boundaries. In the plan view, can be seen a sleeping area and a “wet space”, which were designed as opposed spatial experiences. A zone of blinds is placed along the room, and as it develops in three dimensions, breaks in smaller fragments and acquires different functions depending on the needs of each space. It is a multi-functional furniture while forming a perforated border. Colours, inspired by the Greek landscape, complete the spatial expression of the lean and light interior. Blue dominates, as it creates the necessary tranquillity while expanding the contours of the room. Green implies nature, the fertile Greek countryside, and finally, the light shade of ochre creates a Mediterranean association with the sand and sun.

EXTENSION TO A 1950s HOUSE [2016] A&G Varoudakis Architects [Architectural Assistant Part II]

The site of this project included a stone building dating from the 1950s. The aim of the design proposal was to restore the existing structure while extending it in height, so that it would be retained as the core of the everyday living. Moreover, a new stone volume with two floors is added, in order to host the contemporary needs of two families. The new building is connected to the existing with a corridor, reinterpreting and reintroducing the concept of the shared courtyard. The architectural organization of the two stone volumes seeks to balance the scale of the residential complexes of the surrounding area, with the use of traditional building elements, such as the dormers, the small private courtyards and gardens and the gable roofs. At the same time, the use of a modern architectural and structural vocabulary at the interior spaces, seeks to meet the modern housing needs.

[2016] Design Thesis [MArch, Technical University of Crete, GR] w/ Efi Stathopoulou

This design thesis concerns the wider region of Tabakaria, at Vivilaki road of Halepa, in Chania. The aim is to reintegrate the region into the web of the city through interventions in urban as well as in building scale. Recognizing the value of the whole, the project involves the redesign of the beach front, along with the formation of entry points to the area. Thus, the creation of a unified traffic network is achieved, with particular emphasis on experiential understanding of the region. Also wanting to fill in the cultural uses in the area of Halepa, we chose to create a cultural core, intervening in five adjacent buildings. The choice was made because of the size and location of these buildings. Finally, the design solution for their interior aims to create a single space flow, in order the buildings to functionate as a whole with interdependent uses.

C R E AT I V E R E U S E [2014] Intervention to existing building fabric [MArch, Technical University of Crete, GR]

This project is a design intervention to an existing building fabric. The first step involved the survey of the building and the assessment of its condition, followed by technical drawings and a statement of significance. As part of the restoration of the existing industrial building, the former distillery is acquired a new function, being converted into an agrotouristic accomodation complex. The main building is reused as a restaurant, while the rooms with the mechanical equipment of the distillery are converted into exhibition spaces. The wooden lofts are redesigned to create a single entity and thus, at the first level, are connected with the large cement tanks, whose roofs are adapted in order to host a wine bar. In the northern part of the site, four independent guesthouses are created, following the tracings of the existing buildings. The aim is both to define the large courtyard and to highlight the main building as a reference point of the complex. The building located near the eastern entrance is converted into a residence with a reception area, while the rest of the buildings retain their use as warehouses. Regarding the materials, stone is retained as a structural element, achieving the separation between the old building blocks and the subsequent concrete ones.

FRAGMENTS [2014] Architectural Design 7 [MArch, Technical University of Crete, GR]

This project concerns the urban landscape and architecture as an interpretation of the place. The site had great historical importance as it forms the south part of Santa Lucia bastion in Chania, Crete (GR). It is mainly characterised by the old venetian fortifications, which remain in a fairly good condition. The aim of the design was to retain the venetian fortifications as the prominent element of the site and as a result the uses were dispersed in order to achieve the smallest building volumes possible. Some of them are also ‘hidden’ underground taking advantage of the topographic changes. In this way, the uses created a walking path around the site, calling visitors to explore it. Another important design gesture was the reconnection of the fragmeted fortifications, using underground or elevated walkways. Everything was designed to highlight the historical importance of the area. The building program included mixed uses, such as an Îżutdoor market, a wine bar and a small lecture hall with exhibition space, among others.

LINEAR LIVING [2014] Interior Design [MArch, Technical University of Crete, GR]

This project is about the interior design of an apartment of 80 m2, which is part of a wider design project for a housing complex in close proximity to the port of Souda in Chania (Crete, GR). The design and organization of the interior spaces aims to serve the daily needs of a family of three, while taking advantage of the sea view offered by the location. The double height, combined with the wide openings of the northern facade, creates an ambient illumination and a sense of floatation. On the first level, the linearity of the space is enhanced by the use of two different materials (concrete and timber), which create a clear horizontal separation. The apartment is mainly organised as an open plan space, with the exception of the bathroom and the child’s bedroom that define the entrance by creating a portico along with the mezzanine floor. The second level hosts the master bedroom and a working space.

CA R LO S CA R PA . PA R A L L E L A P P R OAC H E S [2016] MArch Dissertation [Technical University of Crete, GR] w/ Efi Stathopoulou

The starting point of this dissertation is the work of the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. The first chapter presents a brief biography with references to the elements that shaped his architectural identity and analyses through examples, the basic principles and characteristics of his work; the material and spatial stratification (layering), the manipulation of light, the use of water and the relationship of his buildings with their surrounding environment. Driven by these elements, the second chapter references the theories developed around the notion of the genius loci, focusing on the one of the ‘critical regionalism’ which reconnects the contemporary architectural design with specific cultural and natural characteristics. Having presented the theoretical background, the chapter proceeds to the analysis of early works from different architects who acted in different periods, countries or even continents, and whose work presents a common approach with Carlo Scarpa’s. The aim is to observe the way in which every architect adapts those common features in the architecture of his place. The architects in question - Luis Barragan, Sverre Fehn, Atelier 66, Tadao Ando, Peter Zumthor and Vincenzo Latina - design buildings that do not follow the architectural fashions of their era, spaces that resist the logic of globalization and evolve the local identity. The main intentions of this dissertation is to highlight the importance of critical thinking in the selection and implementation of those elements that retain the character of the place through a contemporary architectural approach which develops the local idiom.

[RE]INTERPRETING THE EXISTING [2019] MSc Dissertation [ECA, The University of Edinburgh, UK]

[The dialectic between conservation and contemporary architecture in the adaptive reuse of existing building fabric]

[RE]INTERPRETING THE EXISTING THE DIALECTIC BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IN THE ADAPTIVE REUSE OF EXISTING BUILDING FABRIC

This dissertation aims to explore the dialectical and complementary relationship between conservation and modern architecture, and particularly, their role in the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. In an attempt to prove that contemporary design interventions can be informed by a theoretical framework and a sound analysis of the existing fabric, different conservation theories are examined with focus on the concept of adaptive reuse. The aim is to offer a new perspective on the role and effect of contemporary design within the process of adaptive reuse, providing a valuable input to the wider discussion on conservation theory and practice in the future. Conservation practice has always been directly related to the notions of time and history. By reflecting on the theoretical models of ‘palimpsest’ and ‘architectural fragment’, this dissertation seeks to alter the false perception that the historical layers of a building impose multiple constraints, minimising or even preventing change to an old existing fabric. Contrariwise, history is an important source of knowledge and is neither irrelevant nor blindly ignored in contemporary design. Instead, it provides a shift in the conservation approach of existing buildings, upon which the past is seen as a moral force driving the design of new architectural forms.

DISSERTATION

The main question this dissertation is expected to answer is how the conservation practice can work successfully with contemporary architecture in the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. What are the potentials of their collaboration? How can modern design interventions be combined with an old building fabric, in a balanced relationship that both respects the original structure and adds new layers of meaning to it? Inevitably, the relationship between old and new becomes an important part of the research and the analysis, in an attempt to explore the ways that different architectural elements can be woven together, creating a sense of a whole and not a fragmented collage of material traces. The reinterpretation of the architectural fragments through contemporary design can reveal new relationships and design strategies in the conservation of existing building fabric.
