Youth Computer Development Campaign Most teenagers, especially girls, in junior high in Hohoe, Ghana have never used computers in their lives. For computer class at school, their teachers will draw a computer on the blackboard in chalk and point out the parts. The goal of this campaign is to buy 10 computers (at a cost of about $450 each) so that these children can learn to type and become proficient at using computers. This will greatly improve their ability to achieve higher education and obtain better jobs in the world of modern technology. The computers will be kept at a child rights center run by Care Net Ghana, a local NGO. This center is a safe place for children to come when they have issues they would like to discuss privately (such as abuse, reproductive health, etc). The center also runs after school programs for school children. We hope that the addition of these computers to the center will not only help under‐privileged teenagers become computer proficient, but that this knowledge will empower them to aspire towards a better future.
Structure of the Program The course will last 5‐6 weeks for 2‐3 days a week and 1‐2 hours a day, depending on the best schedule for the students and teachers. Students should be encouraged to come in their free time to practice their typing skills. At the end of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion. If the course goes well for these students, there will opportunity for them to enroll in a more advanced course in the future. 1. Recruitment for Teacher: A volunteer will be recruited to come to Hohoe for a minimum of 7 weeks to take full control of the computer courses. He or she will teach 2 or more groups of 10 students each for a 5‐6 week course. 2. Recruitment of Students: Students will be recruited by the Project Officer, Edem Blaise, from the surrounding junior an senior high schools. These students must be highly motivated and committed to the program; they must sign a contract that states this commitment. Their parents must sign as well acknowledging their support of their child in attending this program. Students and parents will be given a course schedule outlining what they will learn from the course.
