Plants
ABSTRACT From the human point-of-view, we are the dominant species on the planet. We are not being domesticated; we domesticate other species. However, what if this idea is nothing but a self-serving fantasy and plants have been domesticating us all along, getting us to do what they cannot do for themselves? The thesis explores plant’s sovereignty over humans as Michel Pollan theorises in The Botany of Desire, by creating architecture through a plant’s perspective. As a shift from the Anthropocene, it questions the current roles that humans and plants play in society, by elevating the priorities and desires of plants in the Posthuman. Singapore’s Garden City model crafts a controlled and managed utopian state of nature as an idealised way to exist. The state’s curation of nature is a process selection and discrimination of plants that meet human-centric criteria. The thesis studies plants that do not qualify for the Garden City image but have proven their adaptability to urban spaces, creating their own intimate and mega versions of spectacles. The thesis speculates a botanical architecture where plants can control and take over the architectural design. Plants would be able to exist as they intend to, creating its own architecture as nature gradually regains its rights over urban spaces; a vision where the freedom and unpredictability of nature has supplanted the hierarchy of the state and its people. w h e r e | Singapore w h a t | Facade System

Domesticating Architecture Questioning the role of plants & humans in the Anthropocene THEORY based on
The Botany of Desire By Michel Pollan
What if buildings or even cities were designed through the lens of a plant? To allow plants to shape and control spaces would mean to give flora at large a radically different standing in society and in architectural design than it has today.

Curated Nature In Its Idealised Form
Singapore’s Garden City vision as always been the governing factor when developing its land scarce city. Its Green City Brand has been long established by former Prime Minister and Founding Father Lee Kuan Yew, who believed that cleaning and greening up the city was a top priority for Singapore’s longterm independence and global recognition. The Garden City brand has been based on models of curation, perfecting the constructed state of nature that ought to be in order to happily coexist with a human centred lifestyle. The state crafts a controlled and managed utopian state of nature as an idealised way to exist, design and manage a Green City Brand – Clean, Green, Beautiful. The thesis aims to achieve the contrary; to allow nature’s sovereignty over the state by allowing plants to create and craft spaces, thereby controlling the people.

Bringing back Life from our Trash ABSTRACT The Project aims to speculate Semakau Landfill’s life at the end of its lifespan in 2035 by rejuvenating life back onto the island by 2050, ready to be given back to the people. Ironically, Singapore’s consumeristic habits has created a land full of potential. By conserving and enhancing current critical habitats such at mangroves and coastal reefs found on Pulau Semakau, Semakau 2050 will be a off-shore nature reserve - an ideal destination for a day getaway from city life. The project discourses Singapore’s rapid modernisation as a critical issue that makes developing Semakau as a nature reserve essential for Singapore’s societal growth and ecology. w h e r e | Pulau Semakau, Singapore w h a t | Nature Reserve & Retreat 24

Petite Ceinture An
Edible
Landscape ABSTRACT
The project aims to revitalise an abandoned railway urban space by bringing the community down to the tunnel through a common goal to redefine a Parisian Landscape. The abandoned state of the track allowed for the entire tunnel to be engulfed by wild nature, transforming it into a green belt around Paris. To retain the organicness the Petite Ceinture, the project proposes to create an organic programme with light structures. The site needed to unite cultural and work programmes, while solving the refugee problem in Paris. This could be achieved through food and urban farming. A sustainable process is created by utilizing refugees in taking care of the urban farming landscape for the cultural and work programmes. The connectivity of the Petite Ceinture allows for the such an urban farming landscape to bleed and continue throughout the entire Paris, as the tracks becomes a transportation boardwalk for cyclist and pedestrians as well as future needs for train access. w h e r e | Paris, France w h a t | Mix-Use Urban Space

Ascension A Sanctuary for the Dead & Living
ABSTRACT Accension Funeral Home - As a celebration of the deceased’s life and his transition to the heavenly god, the building aims to highlight this ascension. The tower stands tall to dignify the souls of the departed and celebrate the process of death. As the nation develops, the tower becomes a mark to commemorate those in the industry as well as the departed, as oppose to hiding and shunning them away from civilization. The idea that death is unclean is challenged and reinvented. Death now lives elegantly and majestically amongst mother nature and close to their loved ones.

House
ABSTRACT the’Nude Cultural House is a local art centre targeted towards reviving Singapore’s dying art forms by rehousing nomad street performances and giving them a constant venue to perform. The design will be a reinterpretation of Vernacular Asian theatres set in modern time. The building will bring the streets in and cater to the diverse spatial needs of the respective art forms. It will express the movement of the body, as well as expose the process and narrative of a performance. w h e r e | Holland Village, Singapore w h a t | Cultural Community Centre 42

F l o r a Fossils
To foster & fossilise community indentities ABSTRACT The museum is an architecture that stands for the community’s identity and heritage, based on their spatial and dwelling traits. The architecture blurs the boundaries between private and public spaces just as its dwellers do, by breaking out of the conventional grid. It aims to celebrate the groundedness of the dwellers by bleeding the inside and outside spaces of the galleries. Visual and physical connection with the surrounding activities and biodiversity was key in redefining an art space. As the community takes over the spaces and introduces their character, the pristine and clean museum becomes worn and beautiful. It grows old with character as dwellers bring in their red plastic chairs, and soccer balls, while the nature inside and outside the museum overgrows the architecture. w h e r e | Beach Road, Singapore w h a t | Community Museum 44

D e n s e H o u s e An Artist Dwelling in Gillman Barracks ABSTRACT Dense House - is a house for performance artist Heather Henson, an artist who uses anthropometry to create an art piece through dance. Inspired by the layering and density of her strokes, the use of a single language can create various degrees of densities to form organic layers of spaces and paths. Bamboo poles of varying densities are used to create private and public spaces, based on the degree of privacy needed. The varied densities play with the body limits of users as the sheer closeness of the poles prevents human access, as well as blocks visual sights, thereby creating enclosure without the need of walls. This playground allows users to experience and move around the forest of poles based on their bodily experience, creating a unique experience for each individual. w h e r e | Gillman Barracks, Singapore w h a t | Artist Dwelling & Performance Space 46

Landscape Exploration Summer Landscape Architecture Internship Ever since the day I was inspired by a Swedish designer, who used his art form to help the Cerebral Palsy community, I aim to live by my motto - “What is Your Art for?”- hoping that one day my Art would mean something to someone... Along with my love for plants, I am inspired to create buildings that positively impact its landscape and people. The Biophilia hypothesis speaks about humans’ innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. Edward O. Wilson talks about the powerful effect Biophilia has on the human brain and society’s outlook on life; and through architecture, I strive to achieve this. This had led me to experiement with nature-centric architectural projects at NUS, as well as to seek landscape architecture experience. I plan on continuing my architectural journey in the pursuit of greening the urban environment, and spreading my love of plants. w h e r e | Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl w h e n | May - July 2018
