Welcome to 2016 Welcome to our 23rd Year filled with enticing and exciting music! We are justly proud to bring you the ‘very special spirit’ that is at the core of the Manukau Symphony Orchestra. Join us performing live at the Vodafone Events Centre in South Auckland. With five concerts that range from the striking ‘Clock’ Symphony of Haydn to the emotional Romantic 4th Symphony of Anton Bruckner, there is much in our 2016 season that you will want to experience.

Peter Wedde Manukau Symphony Chairperson

Outstanding international pianist, Christopher Hinterhuber, returns from Vienna to open our year with Brahms’ second Piano Concerto which is full of grace, grandeur and youthful flare. What a wonderful way to start our year! Of special note is our Kotahitanga-Unity concert in September, where we will feature music of indigenous peoples - from our own Maori composers to that of Australian, Japanese and Asian - to bring a strong message of the International Unity of Peoples that is the heart of our Nation and of our Orchestra.

Uwe Grodd Manukau Symphony Music Director

We urge you to take advantage of the savings available now by purchasing the full year’s Season Concerts. It fills me with a great sense of pride to once again congratulate the Manukau Symphony Orchestra on another highly successful year of music making in Auckland. I welcome the orchestra’s audience to what is set to be a fantastic 2016 Series. I encourage you to join the MSO, along with their Music Director Uwe Grodd, to hear and feel the orchestra’s ‘very special spirit’ for yourself. It is an experience that will certainly leave you moved and inspired.

Len Brown MSO Patron Mayor of Auckland

My best wishes to the MSO for a successful year of music making in South Auckland. I am delighted to add my welcome to a great year with the MSO at the Vodafone Events Centre, Manukau. Since the orchestra’s venueopening Concert in May 2005 we have watched enthralled as the MSO progresses from strength to strength. I applaud the dedication of its director and volunteers who work enthusiastically to make sure that this wonderful asset remains firmly anchored in our Pacific South. I highly recommend you all continue to support the artistic and financial endeavours of this amazing group of musicians as they enter their 23rd year - and our venue’s 11th!

There is perhaps no piano concerto grander than the Brahms Bb. Its virtuosity is spell-binding!

Vienna Masters Saturday 12 March 7.30pm Joseph HAYDN Johannes BRAHMS

Symphony No. 101 The Clock Piano Concerto No. 2, in Bb major, Op. 83

Uwe Grodd Christopher Hinterhuber

Conductor Piano

There is perhaps no piano concerto grander than the Brahms Bb. With the spaciousness of a symphony, the drama of an opera, the intimacy of a lullaby and intertwining raptures of the greatest love songs, it touches almost every emotion with extraordinary immediacy and power. Its virtuosity is spell-binding! We are delighted to welcome international pianist, Christopher Hinterhuber, to take us on the amazing journey that is Brahms’ 2nd Piano Concerto. We are thrilled that Christopher is taking some time away from his duties at the University of the Performing Arts in Vienna to join us again. Many of us remember his amazing performance of Nights in the Gardens of Spain by De Falla and we celebrate his special ten year recording bond with MSO conductor, Uwe Grodd. Known as the Clock Symphony because of its ticking rhythm in the 2nd movement, Haydn’s Symphony No. 101 is a work of heartfelt joy. Michael Steinberg observed “Haydn has a gratifying number of different clocks in his shop, offering ‘tick-tock’ in a happy variety of colours.”

Overture to Carmen Selections from Carmen Suites 1 & 2 Symphonie Espagnole Op.21 Symphony No.5 Op.107 in D major The Reformation

Uwe Grodd Benedict Lim

Conductor Soloist

Spanish heat and gypsy passion are brought to the stage in Bizet’s overture to ‘Carmen’ - from the Seguidilla to the Toreador Song. Bizet was devastated by the initial rejection of this opera as immoral and vulgar and regrettably he did not live to see the truth of Tchaikovsky’s prediction that “in ten years it will be the most popular opera in the world.” The Symphonie Espagnole is one of Lalo’s most frequently played works and is considered a Concerto. The work, full of Spanish motifs, launched the period when Spanish music became ‘en vogue’. Its beautiful melodies sparkle with vivacity. MSO welcomes back 15 year old violinist, Benedict Lim, from the Pettman National Junior Academy (PNJA), as soloist for this work, in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of this distinguished Academy. Mendelssohn’s 5th Symphony was composed in 1830 in honour of the 300th anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession - a key document of Lutheranism which was presented to Emperor Charles V in June 1530. Unfortunately, the anniversary celebrations were cancelled due to political unrest and Mendelssohn abandoned the work. The symphony was not published until 1868, 21 years after the composer’s death. To honour Luther, Mendelssohn included in his finale the beloved hymn Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A mighty fortress is our God).

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 From the New World Symphony No. 9, Op. 95

Tianyi Lu Delvan Lin

Conductor Piano

In 2015, aged 16, Delvan Lin surprised New Zealand by winning the adult section of the Wallace National Piano Competition. With his prize winnings Delvan set out for the Curtis Institute of Music Young Artists Summer Programme in Philadelphia, where he continued achieving top Competition placings. A student of Kings College and a resident of Flat Bush, Delvan is thrilled to join the MSO for Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - one of the Romantic period’s greatest works. Dvorak’s Symphony From the New World needs no introduction for many of us. It is Dvorak’s most popular symphony and one of the most popular of all time. It is thought to have been based on African American spirituals and other influences that he encountered during his years in the USA. Although this may be true to an extent, Dvorak’s music is essentially Bohemian in nature – reflecting his native homeland. MSO welcomes the return of Guest Conductor, Tianyi Lu, to direct us for this programme.

Bruckner gave his 4th Symphony the title Romantic... a medieval romance as depicted in the operas Lohengrin and Siegfried by Richard Wagner.

The Romantic

Saturday 26 November 7.30pm Richard WAGNER Richard WAGNER Anton BRUCKNER

Overture Tannhäuser WWV 70 Wesendonck Lieder Song Cycle WWV91 Symphony No. 4 in Eb major The Romantic

Uwe Grodd Rhonda Browne

Conductor Mezzo-soprano

Our concert commences with the greatest of Wagner’s Overtures - and possibly of any overture - from his most controversial opera Tannhäuser. This opera is based on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love - a theme that runs through much of Wagner’s mature works. We are proud to introduce New Zealand born mezzosoprano, Rhonda Browne to bring to a close our fabulous year of drama. Rhonda brings us Wagner’s magical setting of five poems by Matilde Wesendonck. Matilde and Wagner’s mutual infatuation, which developed while Wagner and his wife were living in a small cottage on the Wesendonck estate, led to these intense wistful songs: The Angel, Stand Still, In the Greenhouse, Sorrows and Dreams. Bruckner gave his 4th Symphony the title Romantic. In this he was not referring to romantic love, but rather a medieval romance as depicted in the operas Lohengrin and Siegfried by Richard Wagner. Bruckner sets the scene in a medieval village. In his words: ‘In the first movement after a full night’s sleep the day is announced by the horn. Then life goes on: birds sing, people pray, the forest murmurs, proud horses and knights burst forth.…..’
