Transvaginal Ultrasound – What Is It And Why Is It Done? Introduction Also known as an endovaginal ultrasound, a transvaginal ultrasound is a procedure used by doctor’s to examine the internal organs of the pelvic region of a woman. As the best gynaecologist in Panchkula who works at a leading maternity hospital in Panchkula explains, a transvaginal ultrasound, like all other ultrasound procedures, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of internal organs. Ultrasound procedures, unlike X-rays don’t use radiation and thus are completely safe and harmless.

What Is The Procedure Used For? Experts at the mother and child hospital in Panchkula explain that a transvaginal ultrasound may be necessary for women who are experiencing symptoms such as:    

Pelvic pain Unexplained vaginal bleeding Infertility Abnormal results from a pelvic or abdominal exam

When it comes to pregnant women, the best female gynaecologist in Chandigarh (who works at the hospital in Panchkula), says that a transvaginal ultrasound is especially helpful. It is used for:     

Checking the heartbeat of the foetus Confirming the date of pregnancy Assessing the condition of the placenta Checking for ectopic pregnancy Monitoring pregnancies with a higher risk of miscarriage

The Procedure The procedure is quite simple. The patient will be asked undress from the waist down and put on a hospital gown before lying down on the examination table with their knees bent. The transducer (used to emit the sound waves) is a wand shaped device. It is covered with a condom and lubricating gel before being inserted into the patient’s vagina. Once the transducer is in place, it will produce sound waves that bounce off the internal organs back to it. A sonographer (ultrasound specialist) will use side-to-side and rotational movements to bring different areas into focus. The transducer will transmit the information directly to a TV monitor where it will appear as a series of images.
