Carlos Campos arquitectura calle Salamanca 14, Valencia phone : 963954845 ccamposgonzalez@telefonica.net

dec 2014 graduation Thesis castiglione I italy project of a wine complex on the slopes of mount Etna supervisor Prof. Fabrizio F.V. Arrigoni I unifi
| 12
The subject of this work deals with the creation of a wine cellar located on Mount Etna’s slopes. Moreover, this project has been realized following to an actual need presented by the wine and agricultural company Pietradolce, which requested a new plant for it’s production of wines. The site of the project is located on the nord slope of Mount Etna, whose landscape is characterized by the alternate presence of vineyards and small villages. In light of the above, the project had to consider and take into account the typical
rural architecture elements of the Etna’s area around Pietradolce’s vineyards. Large terracings made of black volcanic stones, long rows of trees and the steep walls of the mountain influece the general environment of the area. The new cellar enters in this context trying not to disrupt the equilibrium of its surroundings. Therefore, the main goal was trying to come up with a project whose lines, shape, dimensions and also material were in accordance with the atmosphere of such environment. 1.planivolumetric

The entrance to the Bell Tower will occur through a small door which will also serve as an anchoring for the future ladder. The need to preserve a balance between the pre-existing structures and the new ones, between full and empty spaces, lead to embrace the concept of expansion: expansion of the door up to the size of the overhead windows. Such expansion gives space to a figurate bottleneck, visible both in the map and in the section, which will direct the flow of visitors to the entrance of the tower. The ladder is placed at the same height of the garden. This adjustment strengthen the value of green spaces as places for relax and transfer
as well as adding value to the existing stone ladders. Moreover, the project preserves the passage between the garden and the tower with the ladder now looking as a suspended body, a bridge to be uses also as an open space placed just before the entrance to the monument. The resulting architecture recalls a plastic, single-block, object suggesting the concept of unity and thus allowing the visitor to focus on the space, on the feeling of entering into a new space. The project realizes a minimal intervention on the building leaving at the same time a strong mark, making more enjoyable and suggestive the tour. 1.project scheme

A clear boundary separates the urban area from the natural environment, the big expanses of farmland abruptly leave room to the verticality of the ancient village. In this context it was born the project of the new museum that houses the works of Piero della Francesca , which has become link between the built-up areas and the countryside. The use of simple and clean new volumes, which characterizes the entire design choice, while on the one side contrasts with the irregular shapes of the village, on the other interacts with them through games of perspectives. Moreover, the alternation of full and empty spaces, a characteristic of
the volumes of the village, it is rethought in the project itself to constitute its main matrix. The vacuum among volumes is filled with meaning, becoming not only means to bring the look towards the landscape but also to emphasis some spaces: vacuum as latent space made “active by the fullness that surrounds and defines it. The structure of the new building is made of simple volumes embedded in the lot, creating a full face on the via della Reglia and opening up instead towards the hill. The main entrance is emphasized by the curved wall which breaks the perfect geometry of the building thus inviting visitors to go into the museum. 1. masterplan

The circle evokes the image of the wheel and the dynamic nature of the scooter, an agile vehicle that carves out spaces in the city traffic. Two systems of one way ramps hosted inside the ring distribute the access to the car parks, which are located on the first level and the two underground floors. The new volume coexist with the exsisting parking lot, completing the public service of Piazza del Cinquecento.

The matrix of the project takes shape and gains substance through the study of the Etruscan water channeling system. With the project we are able to redefine, in the land and in its ruins, this mark, left by a natural element like water. Through the study of this system and reconstructing a cross-section of the city, the main guidelines of the project have come forth. The canal , in the past filled with water, turns into a real road running under the ground level, dug into the ground, as if the historical stratification occurred had somehow dictated measures and depths. The rest of the canals that once separated the Etruscan
houses and which gave the rhythm to the city, becomes now a system of distribution, which in the new museum becomes an “enfilade of rooms leading to the Etruscan findings. The whole exhibition plant remains hypogeum while all the other services are at ground level. Two large double-height foyer link the different levels of the two paths.

Every city, nowadays, is endlessly changing. Rather than the change itself, the modern revolution lies in its velocity and the effects that it 0.1 leaves behind. The urban voids like the Mazara del Vallo tuff quarry, are that kind of consequences. Apparently doomed to nothing, they are still waiting for someone to give them a role in this tireless turning wheel. Perifericaproject organization’s goal is thus to1.2promote this dismissed area by transforming 1.2 it into a1.3cultural workshop. The theme of this1.2“10 mq” first edi1.2 tion is “Space for hospitality: a temporary shelter for the diffuse hospitality”. “Remnants” - meant as the

residual spaces produced by an inefficient urban growth follows one main idea: those 10 squared meter living units cannot merely fill the space of the quarry and split it up into unused and undefined areas. The “remnant“ has to be considered as a necessity and so identified within its boundaries. Therefore it has to be 1.3 designed.
