Mayor touched by dedication A community will honour a former 21-year politician by naming a park after him on Saturday morning. by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

A year and a half after retiring as mayor of Pitt Meadows, Don MacLean is being honoured with “his own” park. “I’m really excited. I just came from getting my coffee and ran into a couple of friends, and one of them actually lives in this building, so she overlooks my park,” he said, gesturing to the

townhouses that line the newly-named 1.67-hectare MacLean Park. “It blows me away,” he added. Back in November 2011, at one of MacLean’s last council meetings and unbeknownst to him, parks and leisure services general manager Kelly Swift announced that in honour of his 21 years of service, the new park on McMyn Road would be called MacLean Park. This Saturday MacLean Park will be officially opened at 10 a.m. There will be a tree planting, refreshments, and outdoor fitness equipment demonstrations. “Parks and rec do a fantastic job

in all the parks and I knew that they were aiming for a ‘natural theme’ and it would appeal to all different ages. I think they’ve done that,” MacLean said. “And I’m still alive. When I first heard about this I thought ‘do they know something I don’t’,” he said with a laugh. “It’s fantastic.” MacLean owns Sharpe’s Insurance. He intends to retire in September, a few months after his 65th birthday in June. “You’ve got to set a date or you never will,” MacLean added. People can join the former mayor Don MacLean, current Mayor Deb Walters, and Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin for this family-friendly event.

It’s round two for voters in the Maple Ridge-Mission riding – Mike Bocking versus Marc Dalton. But that’s where the similarities seem to end. Bocking, the candidate for the NDP, said there is a different feel this time round in the provincial election. “It does seem this time people seem to be ready for a change,” he said. Dalton, the incumbent, said his connection with the community has “deepened” over his term in office. “I have met so many people – that connection is important,” he said. While Dalton said he encounters support while door-knocking, the race is “very, very Dalton & Bocking competitive.” Opponents again With a mix of working families and pockets of wealth, agricultural and industrial, commuters and those who work locally, Bocking said the riding is reflective of the province, which might be why election races have been so close in the past. Last time was no exception – late into the night of the 2009 provincial election, the outcome was still unclear, and in the end, Dalton won by only 68 votes. Alex Pope, a familiar face from the 2011 municipal election, is running for the Green Party in Maple Ridge-Mission.

Golden Ears United Church has agreed to host a Saturday night community dinner previously held at the CEED Centre. From a barbecue on the streets of Haney to a small indoor venue at the CEED Centre to Golden Ears United Church, St. George’s Community Suppers will continue the tradition of serving hot meals and building community for those looking for some respite on Saturday nights. After the District of Maple Ridge asked that the group who provided about 70 people with regular meals at the CEED Centre every week on Saturday night to find another location, Golden Ears United Church stepped in and invited them – albeit pending final approval from the church’s executive – to serve the meals in their facilities at 22165 Dewdney Trunk Rd. This approval came through last week, reported the church’s minister Leenane Shiels. The community suppers began as Maria Rantanen/TIMES a late night barbecue outside of Benz Teri Mitchell (top left) coordinates the Saturday evening St. on North Avenue and 223rd Street, George’s Community Suppers at Golden Ears United Church started by Teri Mitchell’s late huswhose minister is Leenane Shiels. another pot,” she added. St. George’s Community Suppers represent a group of volunteers dedicated to serving meals to those who are hungry, and while it’s named after the church that Mitchell’s husband attended, many of the volunteers are non-churchgoers, Mitchell pointed out. The people who come for the community suppers are from many walks of life, Mitchell explained, some lowincome, others homeless, while some have mental health and addictions issues. But there are families and seniors who come as well, and the dinners are open to anyone who wants to join in. One person bikes in from Mission to attend the suppers, but most diners are from the local community. When the Hammond and St. Andrew’s United churches united last summer, part of the hope was to make it a church that was even stronger in serving God and the community working collaboratively with other groups, said Shiels. “It’s responding to the gospel call to feed the hungry and be the body of Christ in the world,” Shiels said. The meal is more than just charity, it is open to the community and an invitation to the community to “break bread together,” she added. The United Church, an offshoot of the Methodist Church, has a “particular bent for social justice,” Shiels explained, but it extends beyond feeding the hungry – they want to figure out the the bigger issues. St. George’s Community Suppers take place every Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Golden Ears United Church, 22165 Dewdney Trunk Road.

Bylaws

Council tweaks medical pot zoning Maple Ridge council has asked for changes to bylaw wording, which will lead to another public hearing. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge council sent a bylaw about zoning for medicinal marijuana grow operation back to staff for revisions after concerns were raised at a public hearing.

Council was considering a bylaw, which would have restricted grow-ops to agricultural areas, but concerns were raised about proposed setbacks and parcel sizes. The issue is not whether marijuana is good or bad, he added. “I’ve heard some compelling accounts of the medical side and how it’s benefited people in some really tough situations,” Daykin said. However, he added, council wants to remove it from residential areas. The amended bylaw will have to go back to a public hearing.

Council also dealt with a medicinal marijuana grow-op in the Hammond industrial area, giving the property owner 30 days to hire a consultant to find a solution to the smell from the operation. (The owner can appeal to council for an extension.) District of Maple Ridge staff have been dealing with the issue since last summer after receiving complaints about odours, Daykin said. “The neighbouring folks have to be part of the equation – what’s fair to them,” he added.

Maple Ridge man dies in crash Police are looking for witnesses of two different accidents along Lougheed in east Maple Ridge. by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

Two men in two days have died in crashes on Lougheed Highway. A Maple Ridge man was killed when a Dodge Durango collided with a Ford F250 pickup late Monday afternoon. That followed another fatal crash on Sunday in Whonnock. Monday’s head-on accident occurred at 3:45 p.m. in the 24400 block of Lougheed Highway, said Ridge Meadows RCMP traffic Sgt. Dale Somerville. Just like the Sunday accident in the 28200 block of Lougheed “there’s no

obvious contributing factors” to explain why the one vehicle crossed over into oncoming traffic, Somerville said. In Monday’s crash, Dirk Blackburn, a 57-year-old Maple Ridge man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 53year-old driver of the other vehicle was airlifted to hospital with what Somerville described as non-life-threatening injuries. “This crash involved a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle colliding head-on. Police are still trying to determine the cause, as road and weather conditions were very good at the time of the crash,” explained Somerville. “Initial indications are the SUV crossed over into the path of the pickup. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors,” the sergeant added. “We are asking for any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police to do so as soon as possible.”

Our View

What a visit to U.S.A. worth? Everyone’s in a tizzy since the Americans announced they’re considering charging a fee to Canadian border crossers. While bridges across the Lower Mainland, including the one between Maple Ridge and Langley, are springing up with tolls, we’ve always taken it for granted that a trip to the States will be gratis. Well, for a certain value of free. Scan this A border crossing page with fee, especially one of $1 to $10, won’t deter anyone from making a once-a-year trip to see Disneyland or their American friends or relatives. But there are those who cross the border every day – truckers, mostly, but some folks choose to live in Canada and work in the U.S., or vice versa. Then there are those who cross once a week or so, to get cheap gas, maybe pick up some milk and eggs. For those frequent crossers, it will be the equivalent of a significant toll. That’s in addition to the non-monetary costs we’ve endured along the borders over the past decade. Increased security has meant the need for more identification, including passports or enhanced driver’s licenses. If the U.S. puts a border toll in place, they’ll be taking a small chunk out of the Canadian economy. We could put up a tit-for-tat fee of our own – but that would also hurt us. Do we want to discourage American tourists and film crews from coming up here and pouring money into our coffers? Definitely not. It’s been decades now since we had our debate about free trade with the U.S. It’s ironic that, with free trade thoroughly entrenched, the United States is now considering putting a price on the movement of individuals through the undefended border. – M.C.

Election 2013

Christy fell short of legitimacy

Dear Editor, I watched the Christy show last week, as she was talking with staged people in her pathetic attempt to make the BC Liberals seem legitimate. The total provincial debt is forecast to be $62.7 billion in 2013-2014, up $7.7 billion from the $56 billion the BC Liberals forecast. Eight of the BC Liberals’ 13 budgets have been deficits, including their last five. The queen of the photo-op has gazed into her crystal ball and said, trust us we have everything under control and you can believe me when I say this one is balanced. Some time in the future, B.C. will make billions of dollars from the sale of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). It would be years before any of these

facilities are even built. The Site C Dam would have to be built to provide the needed power. Remember what happened with Tumbler Ridge coal. Japanese steel companies broke signed contracts to buy the coal when coal prices dropped, leavLetters to ing B.C. taxpayers to foot the the Editor bills. Having contracts for LNG with China only means they will pay the going rate until the price drops or some other country offers to sell for less, once again leaving the taxpayer footing the bill. The majority of people in B.C. won’t be sad to see Christy go. Maybe she could return to one of the three universities she attended but never graduated from. John Munro, Maple Ridge

Election 2013

Dix details worthy of explanation Dear Editor, Cherryl Katnich’s comments [Not all apologies are equal, Mar. 26 Letters, TIMES] are a perfect example of why the BC Liberals repeat falsehoods at every opportunity and hope that people will believe them. Adrian Dix did not forge a memo. He wrote a memo for his own files. He did, however, backdate it, for which he apologized and was fired. He was also never charged with anything. The notorious “memo to file” affair erupted 14 years ago, when police were breathing down then-premier Glen Clark’s neck. Police (led by Peter Montague, a known Liberal supporter, and with suspiciously accompanying television crews), raided Clark’s home over his relationship with Dimitrios Pilarinos, a neighbour of his. Mr. Pilarinos had applied for a provincial casino license in Burnaby. Allegations surfaced that Mr. Clark had received a benefit from him, in the form of carpentry work. It was later proved in court that Mr. Clark paid for the work. And Mr. Pilarinos did not win the casino license. The memo said Clark had personally instructed Dix to “ensure that he [Clark] take no part in any aspect of the decision” to award the casino licence. After writing the memo, Mr. Dix took the date stamp for the Office of the Premier

Local food

Watch what you eat

Dear Editor, When I moved to Pitt Meadows in 2007, I was excited to shop at a local market. I love the idea of fresh, local, ethically raised meat for my family. Although they don’t raise their own chicken, they had a sign up stating they buy/sell only local, ethically raised chicken. Unfortunately, I found out after five years of shopping there that the “knowing where your meat is from” slogan they tote does not apply to their frozen meat. I routinely bought the chicken strips for my toddlers. Despite the frozen chicken having nothing but a store label and cooking instructions (no ingredient list), I was somehow to know this chicken came from elsewhere – as is all their frozen, pre-made food. No one thought to tell me that, as I stood in line with my children, paying top dollar so I could serve only the best to them. So as I support my tax dollars going to local food production, buyer beware. Always ask where your food is from, even when buying from a local, family-run business. I didn’t, and for that, I fed my children a step above McDonald’s without even knowing it. Breanna Curley, Pitt Meadows

from his secretary’s desk, turned the date back to July 17, 1998, and stamped the memo with that date. When Mr. Clark faced political corruption charges the following year, Mr. Dix’s memo surfaced as evidence that the premier had distanced himself from the process. Mr. Clark resigned. At trial, the charge was dismissed by Justice Elizabeth Bennett, and if her judgment is to be believed, one could fairly conclude that the special prosecutor was either incompetent or dishonest when he advised the prosecution service that there was sufficient information to obtain a conviction. Election 2013

Behaviour says it all

Dear Editor, The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. This is a proven behaviour principle, a great guide for anticipating how someone might react to a situation, challenging question, or problem. Adrian Dix’s boss got into trouble, so to help him out, Dix composed a false document. He had days to think it over and still chose to lie to police. By his own admission, what he did was “wrong.” Those of us who do not move in such circles of power and privilege might have found ourselves in court, facing serious charges and penalties. Adrian Dix, however, got $70,000 of our money. Would a moral person, with only the public good at heart, cash this cheque? Apparently, he had no trouble with the moral question, as he cashed the cheque. In 2005, Mr. Dix ran for MLA of Vancouver Kingsway and was elected. The people of Vancouver Kingsway, of course, owe the rest of the province no justification for their selection. It is their right to choose. In February 2013, Adrain Dix approved an ad mocking those of us who felt that his questionable background made him an unacceptable candidate for premier of the province. According to the NDP party, anyone who mentions past transgressions is indulging in “attack ads.” When making our decision as to who will be responsible for our province’s future, is it unbecoming to consider past behaviour? In the words of the old Al Wilson song, “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.” Please, vote. Community service

Campaign garners silver The TIMES has been recognized for a recent educational package highlighting future recycling leaders. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

Up-and-coming recyclers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have been recognized – indirectly – for all they’re doing to change the world. On Saturday, The TIMES was given a silver medal from industry peers for the creation of the 40 Under 40 campaign that ran last fall in conjunction with the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society’s 40th anniversary. Inside the newspaper industry, The TIMES earned the recognition through the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association in the arena of community service. Ridge Meadows Recycling Society has been a thriving organization in this community for four decades, and to mark that milestone anniversary last year, The TIMES team wanted to do something special to recognize their “incredible contribution” to both the community and environment, explained publisher Spencer Levan. While providing news coverage for all of the different events, and providing profiles on a few of the founding and early members of the society around Earth Day, The TIMES focused most of its attention on the future of recycling in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Partnering with the depot on the 40 Under 40 campaign, the paper highlighted 40 young people who make significant contributions to this community’s sustainability. The newspaper industry judges described the finished product as “an innovative way to highlight an important

aspect of community life – recycling and sustainability. Good use of the paper’s role in providing information and highlighting stories.” Levan congratulated both the recycling society and his TIMES team for the award. The intention of this campaign was to highlight 40 local people, all 40 years or younger, who are making significant contributions to sustainability in this community and who are the up-and-coming environmental leaders. Working in partnership with the society, The TIMES’ campaign included advertising and stories calling for nominations, as well as a series of features reminding people of the 40 Under 40 competition while profiling some of the community’s environmentalists who are over the age of 40 who play an important role in recycling. The print package culminated with a feature package on Oct. 23 (during Waste Reduction Week) featuring each one of the 40 winners with a picture and brief biography, as well as more stories about the next generation of recyclers. “Through the years, this paper has covered many of the environmental stories and issues that affect residents of this community. They have helped our society promote new programs, initiatives, and changes and are a valuable part of our local media,” said the recycling society’s spokesperson Leanne Koehn, daughter of the society’s two founding members. “We remain grateful for this opportunity to partner with the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES and look forward to our next project together,” she added. Levan said “community” is the key word in this, and he and the team have been proud to serve this community for more than a quarter century and he’s looking forward to continuing that work.

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 4, 2013. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Students shared literacy, culture, and fun during a friendly competition inside the Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary library late last week. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

High school students from across the district “battled” inside Samuel Robertson Technical (SRT) Secondary’s library last Thursday, April 18. Battle of the Books is a reading challenge in which students representing book clubs from Pitt Meadows, Westview, Thomas Haney, Maple Ridge, and SRT secondary schools played trivia games centred around six novels they read over the spring break. The books were Divergent, Erebos, Looking for Alaska, The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian, The People’s Republic (Cherub series), and The Kill Order. Teams of students from each school tested their knowledge of the novels at three stations that mimicked the popular TV game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. The third station was a variation of the game of charades.

Duncan Stefurak, a Grade 11, from Pitt Meadows Secondary, as he played charades with his teammates during Battle of the Books, held Thursday morning, April 18, at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary. Points were collected at each station and at the end of the competition they were totalled up, deciding the winner of the BOB trophy, which this year went to the group from Maple Ridge Secondary. Adding a cultural twist to the finale, because a First Nations author was part of the mix, was a former student who demonstrated a jingle dance for the participants. Her mother also spoke about the symbolism in the regalia. “The kids got some exposure to powwow culture,” said Suzanne Hall, a former district librarian who helped start Battle of the Books. Hall is an elementary aboriginal resource teacher in the district. She helped out at the event because one of the books was

penned by a First Nations author. The Battle of the Books is an off-shoot from Book Fest, a long-standing program involving elementary schools in the district. Four years ago, the secondary school librarians decided to bring Book Fest to the high school level. Hall said Battle of the Books could become a thing of the past, if the district decidesd to cut teacher-librarians, as has been proposed as part of the budget cuts this year. “This is really on the bubble for next year,” Hall said.

Knowing Trevor was a good guy because he had volunteered for our program, I friended him back. (That’s Facebook-speak for accepting friend requests). Trevor and I had many conversations on Twitter and Facebook about myriad topics, and I discovered he is an avid and talented aviation photographer. Trevor discovered many things about me as well, not the least of which is my love of food and cooking, as well as a somewhat quirky attachment to all things geek. We didn’t actually meet in person until he stopped by a booth I was staffing at the farmers market.

Habits valued So far in this series of columns, Jeff Weltz has covered the blessing of traditions and good habits, now he will address the other side, prejudices. Yes, prejudice rears its head in sport fishing. We often see it in the negative remarks passed back and forth over styles of fishing and fishing tackle used. The most evident prejudice, though, is in the area of fish species. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Student earns black belt after 12 years

Brent Langridge has come a long way since he first entered the Sun Hang Do studio back in 2001. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Smooth as fresh milk, with the nimbleness and fluidity of a dancer, Brent Langridge practised his punching, blocking, and kicking techniques while warming up for a recent early-morning class at the Sun Hang Do martial arts studio in Maple Ridge. The grace in which the 30-yearold practises martial arts didn’t come overnight. He’s been training at Sun Hang Do’s local studio at 20475 Lougheed Hwy. for 12 years under the guidance of master instructor Dave Kinney. On Saturday, May 4 at Westview Secondary, Brent will compete in the Sun Hang Do tournament and exhibition where he will receive his black belt from Sun Hang Do founder Grand Master Kang. Away from the studio, Brent plays drums, sings karaoke, and watches Vancouver Canucks games. The Pitt Meadows Secondary grad also works at WalMart in the maintenance department and during his down time, reads and writes poetry and stories. Brent also happens to have Down syndrome. Community support worker Mary Morellato has worked with Brent and his family for the past 24 years and said martial arts has boosted his self-confidence. “I’ve seen him grow and mature throughout this whole process,” Morellato said. “It’s also given him an outlet for exercise that’s really important.” Brent’s keen eye started his long relationship with Sun Hang Do. In September 2001, Morellato was driving Brent along Dewdney Trunk Road when he spotted the studio. “Brent had seen some

martial arts on TV and he pointed to the window,” she recalled. “I asked, ‘Do you want to try that?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’” Upon entering the studio, Morellato asked Kinney if he took people with special needs. He laughed and gestured to his daughter Keauna, now 17, who has a rare genetic condition known as Kleefstra syndrome. Twelve years later, Brent says he feels at home in the studio. “I love it,” he said. “It’s really

good. It gives me muscles and energy.” His black belt is long awaited. Brent tested for the belt six months ago during an eight-hour event involving roughly 70 students from all nine Sun Hang Do schools located around the Lower Mainland. Two weeks later, he was unable to attend the black belt ceremony because he underwent surgery for a herniated belly button. “He’s had really good patience,” Kinney said. “He’s had a temporary black belt for six months.” Kinney has enjoyed training with Brent through the years. “He tries hard,” Kinney said. “He gets lazy once in a while like all of us, but he’s great.” Kinney said dedication and hard work prevails over more tangible elements, and Brent’s situation is

no exception. “The people that are consistent with their attendance, consistent with their training, and have that never-give-up attitude, those are the ones who succeed,” Kinney said. “The two things that every black belt in the world have in common is, they all started out as a white belt, and they never gave up.” Brent’s attitude mirrors the Sun Hang Do philosophy, Kinney said. “Sun” means to be kind and good, “Hang” implies behaviour, actions, and conduct, and “Do” translates into the endless improvement of one’s self. Martial arts isn’t Brent’s only sporting interest. In July he’ll be going for gold in bowling at the upcoming 2013 BC Special Olympics Summer Games in Langley.

Knights learn from pros

A veteran told local young players, ‘You are the future of football.’ by Sam Van Aert

Special to The TIMES

Football role models and flag-football players persevered through the driving rain for a night of instruction late last week at Garibaldi Secondary. Several CFL football players with the Game Ready Fitness Program came out to Garibaldi to teach football skills to Meadowridge Knights flag-football players, who range in age from eight to 16. The program hosts a team of mentors consisting of current and former CFL players who are living in the local area.

“You are the future of football in Canada… or in the United States. We are all so happy that we can come out and be here for you, so we can pass on some things we know and some skills that will get you where you want to be,” said Vancouver native Will Loftus, who played 11 seasons for the Edmonton Eskimos. Loftus was joined by Justin Sorenson, a Parksville native and current lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers; Zander Robinson, born in Vancouver and currently playing for the Toronto Argos; Langley Rams coach Eddie Ferg; and Eric Taylor, who played for the BC Lions in 2008. Other participants were Stephen Faoro, who played for the Tri-City Dogs and Cam Clarke who plays for the University of Manitoba.
