Three suspicious fires investigated A recent bylaw allows vacant, derelict buildings to be dealt with. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Three recent fires in Maple Ridge have been deemed suspicious, while another building that burned almost two years ago was pulled down earlier this week. The former Don Cherry’s Bar and Grill was demolished Monday. It has been vacant for more than two years and was largely destroyed in a fire in August 2011. Also on Monday, a house in the 21400 block of 122nd Avenue burned, and after its investigation, the fire department turned it over to the RCMP, indicating something suspicious was found in the examination. In addition, a fire a month ago in the 22200 block of Lougheed Highway that damaged two houses has also been turned over to the RCMP. The third fire, also considered suspicious, happened in the 20100 block of Ditton Street on Wednesday, and was extin-

Police warn parents Ridge Meadows Mounties give Internet safety tips. Ridge Meadows RCMP are alerting parents about children being targeted by Internet predators on social media. Police are currently investigating cases where children of various ages have taken nude photos and sent them to individuals they have through social media websites. In some cases, the child was coerced into sending the images, while in others the youth exchanged photos with casual, online acquaintances. “Our files involve the creation and distribution of child pornography, which is being thoroughly investigated,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “Police want to warn parents of children in our community that this type of behaviour is still going on.” The files under investigation involved children using programs such as Skype, Kik, and Instagram. What begins as innocent conversation quickly progresses to more intimate conversations and photograph requests. Police give the following safety tips: • Have access to your children’s accounts; • Install parental monitoring software on computers; • Ensure your child’s profile is set to “private;” • Don’t allow a child to have friends or contacts whom they do not know personally; • Disable “geotagging” on any camera or device used by your child to post photographs; • Discuss what photographs a child is allowed to post; • Don’t allow your child to use social media applications, like Kik, that do not have privacy or parental controls.

Orphans get food daily (above) at feeding centres built and funded by Project Wellness. Project Wellness has funded 24 wells in Malawi, in southern Africa. The latest was built in the village of Kalitsiro in April.
Development efforts
Two dozen wells drilled Children continue to receive food and care in southern Africa, thanks to Maple Ridge-based Project Wellness. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
After more than eight years of development work in Africa, feeding orphans and bringing fresh water, George Klassen is seeing the fruit of his labour. Klassen, through his non-profit organization Project Wellness, is seeing the orphans he’s been feeding for years growing up and having improved lives – especially the girls who are turning into ladies, he said. “They have tried to better themselves,” Klassen said of the children he has fed and educated at two orphan care centres in Malawi, a land-locked country in southern Africa. The Maple Ridge resident recently
returned from Malawi, where he has overseen the drilling of 24 wells. As he comes across young adults in the villages, “they say ‘we are your children’ – that’s what keeps me there,” he said. Klassen, who is in his 70s, oversaw the drilling of the latest well this April. The well was drilled in Kalitsiro village in the Ntcheu District. The construction contract is always to drill the well 45 metres deep so it gives water during the dry season as well, Klassen explained. In addition, he has been able to secure an acre of land in the village of Chinyamula, where one of the orphan care centres is located, for gardening. The second orphan care centre is in the village of Kasali. Project Wellness is a non-profit organization founded by Klassen and his family, that runs under the umbrella of Amazon Evangelism. For more information, people can visit their website at www.projectwellness.ca.

Volunteers serving up tea
Plants will be sold on the steps of The ACT on Sunday.
The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is serving tea and selling plants on June 9. This will be its first tea and plant sale, called TEAGARDEN, and the public is invited to attend. Plants donated by gallery friends and businesses will be set up for sale on the front steps of the The ACT. For $12, tea aficionados can have tea and sweets served by gallery volunteers. The tea is donated by SOKO Tea House and the treats come from Maple Ridge’s Delizie Bakery and Bistro. Tickets to the tea also include a chance to win one of five garden-themed prizes that will be offered at regular intervals from approximately noon to 2 p.m. – beeswax candles or an exotic potted water
lily plant from von Hardenberg candles, a basket of blooms and a $50 gift certificate from Amsterdam Greenhouse and Garden Centre, a selection of plants from Piroche Plants Inc., or some blooming shrubs from Specimen Trees Wholesale Nurseries Ltd. Also on offer is a beautiful handcrafted ceramic bowl donated by Celia Rice-Jones whose work, along with her husband’s, Keith, is currently on view in the gallery. All prizes are valued at at least $100. Seating is limited so the gallery recommends purchasing tickets in advance. The TEAGARDEN takes place Sunday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The plant sale is on the steps to The ACT, 11944 Haney Pl., Maple Ridge. The tea takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. – last seating is at 2 p.m. – in the Maple Ridge Art Gallery just inside The ACT. Tickets are available from The ACT in person or by calling 604-476-2787.

History inspires teens Pitt Meadows students recently tested their historical knowledge. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Cole White might wear a Marauders Football T-shirt with pride – but his biggest passion can be found in a history book. The Pitt Meadows Secondary student was one of several who wrote the Begbie Canadian History Contest, in which he ranked in the top 10 per cent, giving him a gold medal.
“[History is] my passion – I love the past,” White said. “To be able to share that passion with others is one of the best things I could do,” he added, referring to the fact he wants to become a history teacher. Under the guidance of the school’s socials and history teacher, Susan Walker, the students wrote the exam in April. These Grade 11 students are all “exceptional students,” Walker said. The contest began in Burnaby and has become a national competition and can now be written in both English and French. It is named after the “hanging judge” Matthew B. Begbie.

As an immigrant from Egypt, Pitt Meadows Secondary student John Fahmy said he learned to appreciate the diversity of his new country while taking part in a trip to Ottawa in May through Encounters with Canada. With tours of government buildings and other national sites, Fahmy said, besides great memories of meeting other youth, he learned to appreciate how Canada accepts people from all over the world. “It’s a dynamic country,” he said.

Our View
Senate audit little and late The Canadian Senate is to consider a plan to do a complete audit of its expenses, including the spending of each of its individual senators. It could be that this is a good thing. From all the evidence so far it seems that senators like Mike Duffy have treated the Red Chamber less like a place of learned discourse and more like Scrooge McDuck’s money vault. Duffy has been backstroking through cash and perks since Scan this being appointed. page with On the other hand, perhaps an audit isn’t worth the cost. Maybe we could just save money by replacing the entire senate with bags of sand, propped up in the comfy armchairs of the chamber. They would, in many ways, resemble the average senator. They would take up space, they would weigh about the same, and they would have as much relevance to the average Canadian citizen. In theory, the Canadian senate holds an interesting place in our democracy, as a chamber in which lifetime appointments allow its members the security of not having to worry about public opinion. Instead, they may let themselves ponder the larger, philosophical issues. In practice, the senate still holds an interesting place in our democracy. First, it’s not in the least democratic. Second, it has produced not very much sober second thought over the years, but has proved to be an excellent producer of scandal, patronage, and headlines about worthless old political hacks taking vacations in Mexico or Florida on the taxpayer’s dime. The senate only needs an audit if we intend to keep it around in its present form. If we can all agree that it needs massive reform, or simply to be disbanded, let’s skip a step, save some money, and just get on with the job. – M.C.

Child care
Grateful to care provider Dear Editor,
May was child care provider appreciation month, and I would like to highlight the work of one particular child care provider. Her name is Stephanie Kwasnica, but the little ones she cares for call her “Teacher.” With more than 25 years experience in providing child care, Stephanie is one of many unsung heroes who should be recognized. I would like to recognize Stephanie as a shining example of the many people with whom we trust our greatest treasures on a daily basis: our children.

Punishment needs to fit the crime Dear Editor,
Canadians are getting sick and tired of hearing about corruption and degradation of morality of our politicians. It is all the more distressing when it comes from the members of our Senate – a so-called highly respected body of Canadians chosen from all the provinces. Lately, several voices have been raised about the wisdom of having such an extended and expensive Senate. Luckily, in Canada, even hard-core offenders can get away with relatively mild punishment. It is now high time that the four in question, Senators Duffy, Brazeau, Harb, and Wallin, and Stephen Harper’s Chief of Staff Nigel Wright – plus other similar
senators and MPs – deserve a civilized Canadian form of punishment, which should be highly publicized and could serve as a deterrent. I believe that just resigning from the caucus, conducting an audit, paying back the unjustifiable financial gains, or tightening the code of conduct for the Senate does not go far enough. Such members could be punished by making them attend a mandatory oneday morality workshop, organized by the council of Maple Ridge, which has distinguished itself by being a fair and honest body of elected politicians by adopting a voluntary proposal about not raising their own wages.

Why did the chick cross the road? Dear Editor,
The elections have finally passed, and for most of us, we are in the process of trying to swallow the enormous load of chaff that came with the tiny grain of promise we ordered. I ventured forth the next morning with every intention of sifting the sands of platform promises, curious if any are still visible now that the stage has been set and the lights are on. Crossing the green uptown, I noticed the “Rooster chick bike-rack” (it’s a chicken!) and all thoughts of the recent election

faded away. I tried to re-focus, but soon realized that I could not regain my previous train of thought, or for that matter, find it within myself to even care. The politicians would have to sing and dance or flounder and flail, regardless of my commentary. I had become sidetracked by a chicken. I was there at the dedication for the chicken. It turns out it was July 28, 2012. I wasn’t certain, because of the weather. It was dreary, and really, it could have been any time at all around here. It was a cute little ceremony. Mayor Ernie Daykin was there (resplendent in shorts and sandals) and Maple Ridge’s newest citizen was dedicated with a little pomp and not much ceremony. All was well with our little chick for a time. Then, without warning, he (she) disappeared, only to re-appear shortly thereafter on the other side of the oval. The chick seems to have suffered no ill effects from the ordeal. He (she) is happily doing his duty (protecting unwary bicycles from unscrupulous scoundrels). But our wandering chick captures my thoughts, and the question remains: “So, Ernie, why did the chicken cross the road?”

Pitt Meadows council will consider a motion next week to give MLA-elect Doug Bing a leave of absenceto avoid triggering a by-election. Doug Bing, a third-term Pitt Meadows councillor, was elected on May 14 to the provincial legislature. If he resigns from his council position before January, it will trigger a by-election. The leave of absence request is expected to come as a motion to council in committee next Tuesday. “I expect it to be approved,” Bing said. “It seems to make sense for the munici-

Four mayors and eight councillors were elected across the province into the BC Liberal government. “I think that it’s going to be a really good thing for municipalities across the province,” Bing said, adding that “we’ll be heard in a very strong way.” Bing, along with the rest of the elected MLAs, will be sworn in on Tuesday. Premier Christy Clark, who didn’t win her seat in the riding of Vancouver PointGrey, announced Wednesday she will run the riding of Westside-Kelowna.

Aspiring to be a Mountie Six-year-old Yennadon resident Matthew Schwalme has been telling his mother Carrie for a few years now that he wants to be a police officer when he grows up. So, when the pair stumbled across the Police Fair hosted in the parking lot of Valley Fair Mall Sunday, this youngster was overjoyed. He had his picture taken on a police motorcycle, with Special Const. Steve Terrillon – a community safety officer with the Ridge Meadows RCMP. In addition to having a motorcycle on site, Sgt. Dave Smith brought his RCMP horse Justice, the Emergency Response Team brought a tactical vehicle (inset), and there were marked and unmarked police cruisers for kids and adults alike to climb through and have pictures taken with. London Drugs organized a free Child Find identification program inside the mall again, while new at this third annual Police Fair was the addition of a hotdog sale. The RCMP youth academy, with help from Save-On Foods, held a barbecue to raise money for the youth training program.

Economic development
Small business is really big business
I
n B.C., small business is big business – so much so that the province recently announced a Small Business Accord. The numbers tell the story of the significant impact small business has on the economy with 98 per cent of all businesses in B.C. considered small business. There are 400,000 small businesses providing employment for more than one million people. Here in Maple Ridge we have more than 3,000 small businesses, and we’re hard at work attracting even more. The Ministry of Small Business has produced a great YouTube video that highlights the significant impact of small business on B.C. communities.
You’ll find the video, information about the Small Business Accord, and resources for business at www.gov.bc.ca/smallbusinessaccord.
Investors are coming
T
he highly successful town centre investment incentive program wraps up at the end of this year. To date it has generated $77 million in investment in new construction, including more than 1,000 condo or apartment units that have been built or are nearing completion. Metro Vancouver has forecast a doubling of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows population and jobs. With the prestigious REIN ranking of #5 top Canadian
Investment City, investors and developers are discovering all that this region has to offer, and it’s translating into quite the development boom, particularly in Maple Ridge. First quarter of 2013 building permit numbers are more than double what they were at this time last year; and with “cautious optimism” fast becoming the buzz phrase for the Canadian and B.C. economies; combined with our fortunate position of having some of the most affordable land in all of Metro – we’re continuing to see an accelerated pace of development. And with the development comes great new choices in entertainment, shopping, restaurants, and more.

Developing Ideas by Sandy Blue
Sandy Blue is Manager for Strategic Economic Development for Maple Ridge.
What’s next? Community and stakeholder consultation is currently underway to explore recommendations outlined in the recent commercial-industrial study by GP Rollo, Land Economist. Input from those sessions will be used in the development of a job creation investment incentive – a strategic program modelled after the town centre investment incentive to attract commercial and industrial investment linked to creation of long-term, highvalue jobs in Maple Ridge.
EAC hunts out youth
E
conomic Advisory Commission (EAC) chair Glenn Ralph welcomed two new members, Josef Hans Lara and Karoline deVries, to the EAC in May. The commission is also looking to recruit a youth member. (Youth is defined as enrolled in or less than two years since post-secondary graduation.)
– Sandy Blue is the manager for strategic economic development for Maple Ridge. She can be reached at sblue@mapleridge.ca or 604467-7319.

It’s a week for the exotics, with all three Maple Ridge contingents travelling to faraway locales or visiting with exotic animals – or both. First up (right) is Sherilyn Gale and Robert Turner of Beneath Your Feet Landscaping. This couple travelled to Bali, Indonesia for Gale’s birthday. They had their picture taken with a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, in front of an exceptionally friendly elephant. In the meantime, Thornhill residents Jeff and Lori Ortner recently returned from a six-week adventure to the Mekong region of South Asia that included stops in three countries: Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. They had their picture taken in front of the gilded doors at the Wat Xieng Thong Temple in Luang Prabang, Laos, holding a copy of The TIMES. And speaking of a place to find exotic animals, the Maple Ridge 2nd Alouette Guide unit recently travelled to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle for their third year camp.

Course celebrates half century of golfing
Happy anniversary: An 18-hole executive course in northern Pitt Meadows has been a golfing institution for the 50 years. by Troy Landreville
A half century has passed since the first ever tee off at Pitt Meadows Golf Club. The golf course at 13615 Harris Rd. officially opened on a rainy June 8, 1963. Dr. Laurie Alexander, club chairman at the time, recalls that he made a speech, a ribbon was cut, and all involved in the opening christened the links by playing golf. Dr. Alexander lost three balls that day in rough he described as being “two feet tall.” While it opened in 1963, the course’s beginnings can be traced as far back as 1925, when the Maple Ridge Golf Club opened on the McIver Farm, near Hammond. The Pitt Meadows club grew out of the realization that the nine-hole course was becoming inadequate for the growing community. • A few suggested “In the early names for the Pitt ’60s some golf afiMeadows Golf Course cionados decided were Greybrook, they wanted a full Meadow Ridge, and golf course,” Pitt Golden Ears. That year, the club purchased part of the 120-acre Greybrook dairy farm with $5,000 down and a price of $550 an acre. By May 1963, entrance to the club and the parking lot was graded and gravelled, and an opening day was circled on the calendar. Since that soggy first day of operation, the course’s footprint “has been fairly consistent,” Pierce said. A new clubhouse was built and opened in 1996, the most significant upgrade of the past decade-and-a-half. Through the years, many high calibre golfers have perfected their technique at

In the meantime, Karen Erickson sunk this putt on the 18th hole at Pitt Meadows Golf Club, which opened June 8, 1963. the course at the junior level, most notably 1973 B.C. junior champion, Canadian amateur title-holder, World Cup winner, PGA Tour member, and 2013 Canadian Golf Hall of Fame inductee Jim Nelford. Other former junior club champions who went on to play in the pro ranks include Brad Ewart, Randy Frank, John Aasen, Victor Vianzon, and Michael Zuccolin. “We have some very, very good golfers who play out of this club, and at one time we had the highest proportion of singledigit handicap golfers in Canada,” Pierce noted. But it’s not just the elite golfers – past and present – who have powered the course’s longevity. One can also credit a
collective love for golf amongst its members, Pierce said: “It’s owned by the members and I think the passion for golf and the camaraderie of golf has lent itself to having people continue here, and broaden their friendships, and develop new friendships through their association with the Pitt Meadows Golf Club.” Through the years the club has hosted provincial tournaments at different levels, including junior boys and senior men, and on June 25 to 28 will be the site of the B.C. amateur and mid-amateur women’s championship. “In the last 11 years, we’ve hosted three provincial championships,” Pierce said. On a personal note, the club’s general manager figures he gets out in the course
about 18 times each year. “This is often labelled as a traditional country club golf course,” he said. “Treelined, mature trees…” Members of all calibres are welcome to play at the course. To celebrate its 50th year, Pitt Meadows Golf Club is hosting an open house from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, June 7). The free event is open to everyone and includes draw prizes and dinner certificates. Today (June 6), a special green fee rate of $19.63 is being offered to all golfers. – With files from club historian Andy Smith, from a piece he wrote in June, 1988 for the Pitt Meadows Golf Club’s 25th anniversary

CHRISTENSEN, Ole Lindy Tue June 3, 1941 - May 30, 2013 Our dear sweet Ole passed away peacefully at McKenney Creek Hospice on May 30, 2013 with his family by his side following a valiant 2-year battle with cancer. Born in Ringsted, Denmark, Ole immigrated to Canada in 1963 and spent more than 40 years working in the bush as a logging contractor. A celebration of life will be held on Sat June 15 at 1pm at the Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society or BC Cancer Agency.
