Haney House invokes 1950s Museum staff are hoping Canada Day events will inspire residents to donate their artifacts from the past 60 years. by Maria Rantanen

The 1950s was the first time in history when youth culture began to be celebrated en masse, with Maple Ridge residents recovering from the shock of Second World War in safe, secure nuclear families. And rising from this much celebrated era was the music – rock ’n’ roll – that changed the way youth partied. She said she’s looking for items that or are from Maple Ridge, have a story to go with them, online and are unique curiosities. “People don’t think their stuff is history because they’re still alive,” White said, adding that “yesterday is history.” The museum staff is hoping that Maple Ridge residents will start donating items from the 1950s onward. The best items for the museum collection are clothes and accessories – especially unique items. Haney House has displays with some artifacts from the 1950s, and White said she hopes it will inspire people to donate more. Items that fit into the Maple Ridge Library lobby display cases, where the museum has displays twice a year, are especially suitable for the museum. At the Canada Day event at Haney House from noon to 3 p.m., guides will be dressed in the style of the 1950s and will serve root beer floats. Haney House will be open for tours. There will also be activities for children and a photo booth with props and crafts. Haney House is part of the Maple Ridge Museum & Archives and was the home of early resident Thomas Haney and his family. The historic home is located at 11612 224th St., Maple Ridge.

A man wearing a dark green blazer with medals proudly pinned on his lapels wiped away tears when he recounted the story of a Canadian veteran who wanted his ashes to be buried next to his brother who had died during the Korean War. Warren Byrnell can’t recall the name of the vet, or the brother’s name, but last year the count at the Canadian memorial in Korea went from 378 – which it had been since the 1950s – to 379. “There was 378 up until a year ago until one of the veterans of Korean War requested that his ashes be buried next to his brother,” he said, apologizing for the rare show of emotion. Byrnell, who recently returned from a week-long tour of South Korea with his daughter Karen Light, was overwhelmed. He learned about the memorial count going up to 379 veterans at the time, but it didn’t resonate with him until this trip, he said. On the first day of the tour the veterans were taken to Observation Post Dora and Observation Post Sangseung. “We were advised not to make any hand gestures, because the North Koreans could see us with binoculars,” recalled Byrnell. He told of how they travelled to Busan on the KTX (the “bullet train”) where the United Nations memorial is, and how all the Commonwealth veterans laid a wreath at the Canadian memorial. The following day the veterans travelled to Gapyeong for a service at the Commonwealth Memorial. They then passed through that site to reach the Canadian Memorial, which was built to recognize the Canadians who stopped an invasion April 21 to 24, 1951. “At the end of that ceremony Karen and I presented a letter to

About 7,000 Canadians continued to serve in the tense theatre of operations between the signing of the Armistice and the end of 1955, with some Canadian troops remaining until 1957. In 2013, the Government of Canada will mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice with events in both Korea and Canada on the newly established Korean War Veterans Day on July 27, in honour of all Canadians who served in the Korean War, and those who served on duties in Korea following the signing of the Military Armistice Agreement that ended the war, on July 27, 1953. Country Fest is welcoming submissions of all things handmade, homebaked, and handcrafted for this year’s fair, set to run on July 27 and 28. The Home Arts & Gardening prize book is now available on the fair’s website at www.mrpmcountryfest.com, with rules for entering and lists of all the subcategories in 13 areas from arts and crafts to poultry. The theme for the home arts and gardening exhibits this year is “Lil’ Bit of Country – Lil’ bit of Rock & Roll,” and special prizes will be awarded to exhibitors with items that best represent a country theme. “This is your opportunity to display your creativity and your chance to win prizes for them,” said Lorraine Bates, general manager of Country Fest, which is run by the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association. Some fairs are having a tough time generating interest in the home arts, Bates said, but Country Fest is being touted as
an example of how this section of a fair can work. The home arts building is the “most heritage part” of the fair, she added. Part of the success of Country Fest’s home arts building is due to communication between previous exhibitors – at the end of the fair, exhibitors are told what next year’s theme will be and email reminders are sent out throughout the year about the upcoming show, Bates said. But also, the success comes from dedicated families who participate year after year who do home arts as family projects. “They do it with the fair in mind,” Bates said. “It’s a family thing – that’s what we’re trying to rekindle.” A few years ago, Country Fest organizers moved the home arts building into the curling club, but Bates said the feeling wasn’t the same – it didn’t have that “homey feeling” that fairgoers have come to expect. Bates pointed out that thousands of people visit the Home Arts & Gardening Building to see the submissions. The prize book is available at the fair’s website, but exhibitors can also drop by the office to fill out the entry forms. The deadline for the entry form and payment is July 15.

Best of history is yet to come On Canada Day, it’s traditional to spend at least some time looking back at how this country came to be. If you go to a celebration and do not hear a mention of A) Sir John A. Macdonald B) the War of 1812 C) the HBC or D) Vimy Ridge, you are at a very peculiar event. Likewise, the accomplishments that have become entrenched in Canadian society are likely to be celebrated – democracy, freedom of speech and religion, pluralism and tolerance, universal health care, and so forth. There is nothing wrong with looking back at where we came from and appreciating where we are. However, on this Canada Day, we urge everyone to spend a few minutes looking forward, and thinking about the future of Canada, not just the past. What Scan this kind of a Canada will page with we have in 10 years, 20 years, 50 years, a century? Every politician repeats endlessly that we are working to leave this country to the next generation, but what does that mean? We encourage you not to simply think about the future in terms of tragedies to avoid. Yes, we must consider the economy, the environment, and the ever-disruptive march of technology. But we should also think in terms that verge on the utopian, from time to time. How much better could we be tomorrow? How much better could we make our little piece of the planet, through actions both individual and collective? What can we achieve if we put our strength behind optimistic ideas? A glance at our history will show that almost every good thing about our society was once considered an unworkable pipe dream. Hard work and pragmatism bridged the gap between dreams and today’s solid realities. The past is fixed and finite, the future is vast, unknowable, and could be full of wonders, if we are willing to create them. – M.C.

Hospital is a great pain in the neck for many patients/ clients when requiring hospital care, especially when one comes to the hospital at 3 a.m. in a panic (which occurred with my case)

Dear Editor, I’m sorry. I am misunderstanding something here. Be patient and bear with me, please. I was educated in our public school system. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma says that parking fees at the hospital are set by Lower Mainland Parking Services, which is administered by Fraser Health. Even daytime parking fees, at approximately $3 per hour, constitutes nothing but greed. Reading your story, one also gets the feeling that way too many government organisations – I guess you call it layers – are involved in managing this whole parking mess. Who is what and why? Who owns the property, anyway? And who is actually in charge? Excuses, excuses. If the health ministry is in charge and makes the rules, then it can also change the rules. Wheelchair charges part of policy
Dear Editor, I want to take this opportunity to clarify concerns regarding wheelchair fees in residential care homes [$25 barrier another insult, June 13 Opinion TIMES]. Anyone living in their own house or apartment pays for their own wheelchairs, canes, walkers, as well as a variety of other personal use equipment. Despite what some MLAs have stated, similar rules apply for people living in publicly subsidized longterm residential care. This has been the case for quite some time. While the public health system covers the cost of medical care, residents of publicly subsidized residential care homes who can afford to cover the cost of personal equipment and supplies do so. No one will be denied the use of a wheelchair if they cannot afford a maintenance fee. “As a volunteer at Hospice, I think parking should be free. So many times I’ve seen families of the patients who just want to spend a few moments with their loved ones, only to return to their car to find an $80 ticket. First of all, it’s heartbreaking having a loved one in Hospice, and then secondly, it’s a kick in the teeth to come out and discover a ticket on your windshield! The little Impark elf waits in the bushes for people who don’t pay for parking. He’s a nasty little man who shows NO mercy! Plus, most of the time there’s not enough parking!.” – Barb Stevens
Dear Editor, Start Smart Childcare Centre in downtown Maple Ridge was devastated to find that their bus had been vandalized on Tuesday, June 18. The morning staff showed up early to open the daycare, to find that damage was done to the interior of the bus, the mirrors were smashed, and the door broken. The repairs will take approximately two weeks, causing field trip cancellations. The field trips are important to the children, and it is hard for them to understand why they can’t go. Not only are the staff and parents devastated, but the school-aged children are wondering why it happened, and who would do that. The first and second Laity Guides in Maple Ridge worked hard all year to sell cookies and fundraise for a trip to Victoria. During the excursion earlier this month, the girls visited the Undersea Gardens, the Royal B.C. Museum, and took a guided tour of the provincial legislature. They chose to have their picture taken with their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, on the steps of the legislature. Meanwhile, Karen Light of Pitt Meadows recently travelled to South Korea with her father, Warren Byrnell, also of Pitt Meadows. Byrnell was invited by Veteran Affairs in both Canada and Korea to be part of a week-long ceremony celebrating and honouring United Nations veterans for their part in the Korean War 60 years ago. The local father and daughter had their picture taken with The TIMES during a visit to the Canadian Memorial site in Pitt Meadows’s sister city of Gapyeong.

The BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) appealed to Maple Ridge council to increase the maximum number of slot machines from the previous maximum of 150 at the facility currently under construction at Lougheed Highway and 227th Street.

The initial request for 150 slots machines was made in 2008, pointed out Laura Piva-Babcock, a communications manager with BCLC. However, the current Haney Bingo Hall is “very popular” and “has proven that there is a market demand beyond the original 150-slot machine cap set by the District,” Piva-Babcock said. Although council approved 200 slot machines, the plan is to open with 175, and then BCLC will monitor demand. There are no plans for table games at the new facility, and the maximum capacity will currently allow 200 slot machines, according to the BCLC spokesperson. Chances, currently under construction, is expected to open in the fall.

Albion given spray park approval Maple Ridge council approved spending a little more than $300,000 to build a water park at the Albion sport complex on Tuesday evening. The Albion Sports Complex Water Play Park will be located adjacent to the recently built playground, and will have a sand play area and a spray area.

There will also be a bioswale where the play water will drain into. There will be water cannons, water hoops, and pop-up sprays. The spray park will be about 15,500 square feet in size and is expected to be ready in early September. The contractor is TGK Irrigation Ltd.

aper is an expense. It costs money to produce, store, file, and destroy. There are more efficient ways to make documents portable and sharable. So, it’s no wonder that many companies are abandoning paper altogether and moving to a paperless office, but there are legal issues to consider. How do you go paperless? The answer seems simple: buy a scanner. Whether you use Adobe Acrobat or an enterprise document management system with a central server, you will have a functioning system for scanning and managing electronic documents. Practically speaking, even this basic setup will allow you to work with electronic documents. Legally speaking, though, you may still need to keep some paper documents. But, wasn’t getting rid of the paper the goal to begin with? A key question to ask is whether your paperless office setup satisfies the strict requirements of the provincial and federal governments. If you are governed by a professional organization, you should also check to see if they have any requirements. The provincial and federal governments
each have different requirements for electronic documents. The rules vary and depend on the type of document and its intended use. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) [http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tp/ic7810r5/ic78-10r5-10e.pdf] requires that document scanning systems comply with several national standards. You must purchase these national standards in order to find out what they are. One can only imagine what would happen if a company scanned and shredded its financial records, only to have the CRA determine in an audit that they are legally insufficient. Another key consideration is whether the electronic document will stand up in court. The courts’ acceptance of electronic documents is evolving. Any paperlessoffice system should be designed to ensure that all electronic documents will be admissible in court. If you have an electronic contract that you want to enforce, you will want to ensure that the court will find it to be reliable and admissible as evidence. On top of this myriad of legal considerations, there are privacy issues. As soon as a document becomes electronic, it is susceptible to viruses and accidental disclosure. Proper procedures should be put in place to minimize the risk of (and any liability from) losing a phone or accidentally emailing a document to the wrong person. Companies that have a paperless office, or are considering implementing one, should carefully consider whether the system is legally sufficient for their specific purposes.

When my tulip leaves have turned yellow in June, can I take the bulbs up and keep them in the house? Could I put them in sand or sawdust and then replant them in the fall and add some sand under the bulb? Oh, I have to tell you how I saved my bulbs from being dug up by squirrels. I planted a garlic clove above. Not a single bulb was dug up this year.

es, tulips can be taken up when the leaves have died back and stored inside absolutely dry. I’d choose sand for storage, because it would repel moisture better than sawdust. Inside storage is the method old-time gardeners always used for tulips. Some sand under the bulb should help drainage in normal soil. But this may not suceed if you have heavy clay because the holes can fill up with water in long, days of hard rain. Your idea for protecting tulip bulbs by planting garlic is so worth trying. I have immense problems with squirrels. Besides munching on tulips and crocuses, they sometimes eat my Christmas cactus during long dry summers.

Then mulch around this blueberry bush with about an inch and a half (four centimetres) of composted bark mulch. This should seal in any spores which are dormant in the top layer of soil. These could be released next spring during windy, wet weather to infest your bush again. You might want to check your other bushes in case they are getting started with mummy-berry as well. Your problem bush could have begun infecting them – and they, in turn, could reinfect your vulnerable bush. Dear Anne,

t sounds as if berries started to form but didn’t fill out properly. At least one looks as if it has turned black. I believe your blueberry may have mummy-berry. This is a very common fungal disease in B.C. due to our rainy weather. Mummy-berry spores are spread by wind and rain. Have you noticed that the centre of the flowers produces a little hard lump which falls off? These may be grey or black. The best way to deal with this is to gather up all these tiny ‘berries’ from under the bush after you harvest your good berries. Garbage these mummyberries.

Kindness prompts team to clean headstones

Removing blackberries, disposing of garbage, weeding gardens, and scrubbing headstones were among the duties performed by congregates of the Burnett Fellowship during a recent Serve the City day. For the second year in a row, about two-thirds of the church’s 120-member congregation reached out to help the community and the response from unsuspecting recipients was heartwarming, said assistant administrator Amber-Lee Zielke. The team weeded gardens and planted flowers at the Baptist towers, removed bramble and garbage at McKenney Creek, collected garbage at Laity View Elementary and Westview Secondary, and cleaned up the grounds and specifically scrubbed the headstones at the Maple Ridge Cemetery. we did it,” she added, noting the idea was proposed by church staff last year and was quickly adopted by parishioners as a great way to reach out to the community. In year one, 15 church members went downtown Vancouver. But this year’s efforts, held May 26, were focused entirely on Maple Ridge and they all met
back at the 123-Avenue church after for a barbecue. “We’ll do this again,” Zielke added, noting that the church worked closely with District of Maple Ridge staff to determine what blackberry bushes and trees were unwanted and needed removing, and which area of the cemetery needed attention.

Bands tuned up for celebrations Maple Ridge’s musical brothers will headline local Canada Day celebrations.

For the Johnson Brothers, Brett and Trent, playing in front of a Canada Day audience this Monday is like just playing for family and friends. The brothers will be the headliner at Maple Ridge’s July 1 celebrations in Memorial Peace Park, and Brett said they will be playing about 80 per cent of their own music, with some wellknown cover tunes, starting at 3 p.m. “We make sure we cover songs people instantly know,” Brent said, adding that their show will be a “fun, up-tempo country rocking show.” The Johnson Brothers will be releasing their second album this year and, while it isn’t officially named, it has been nicknamed “summer sixpack,” because it contains six oriClaire Reid Photography ginal pieces. The Johnson Brothers The album will be released exclusively on iTunes later this summer. When they released their first album, sales of hard copies were slow, and Brent pointed out that album sales aren’t where they used to be 10 to 20 years ago. Brent described their music as upbeat and fun in the contemporary country genre. Having grown up in Maple Ridge, it feels like they are with family when they perform in their former hometown. But the experience of performing live is also something they enjoy. “[The best part is] getting up on stage and interacting with the crowd,” Brett said, adding live entertainment isn’t as popular as it used to be. Brett said he’ll be happy to see people they know that he hasn’t seen in a while and be able to play for them. The Maple Ridge entertainment begins at 10 a.m. with Tequila Cowboy and continues at 10:40 a.m. with Fabulous Feet and the Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts. At 11 a.m., the Roadrunners take to the stage, followed by zumba and the Ridge Meadows Chamber Orchestra. At noon, Tuegent will perform, breaking at 12:30 p.m. for the official Canada Day ceremony and Centre Stage Dance performance.

The Pitt Meadows Lions are raffling off a five-minute shopping spree. Tickets are on sale and the service club will be setting up on Canada Day at Spirit Square to sell raffle tickets. Only 1,000 tickets are being sold at $5 apiece, and the grand prize winner will receive $100 worth of meat and all the winner can pile up into his or her cart within five minutes at the Pitt Meadows location of IGA Marketplace. Second prize is a $100 gift certificate to Marketplace IGA courtesy of the store, and the third prize is a $50 gift certificate courtesy of the Pitt Meadows Lions. The last time the Pitt Meadows Lions held a five-minute shopping spree raffle was 30 years ago at Overwaitea in Maple
Ridge when Charlie Perry was the store’s manager, said Pitt Meadows Lions Club member Tom Hardy. The Lions club used to get more money in gaming grants which they then distributed to various groups. But as gaming grants are getting smaller, the group has started fundraising again, something that he is enjoying doing. “It’s rejuvenating the club – getting our face out in the public,” he said, instead, he added, of just sending out cheques. And when they distribute money they have fundraised, it doesn’t have strings attached to it. “With our own money, we can give it away to anyone we want,” Hardy said. Tickets for the raffle will be on sale on Canada Day. In addition, the Lions will be setting up hotdog sales by donation throughout the summer at IGA Marketplace in Meadowvale Shopping Centre where they also will be selling the raffle tickets. Tickets are on sale until Aug. 17 and the draw will take place on Aug. 18 at 2 p.m.

Tuegent continues its performance at 1:30 p.m., and then immediately after, the chamber orchestra will be back with the Spirit of the Pacific. At 2 p.m. the James Thorhaug performs. At 2:40 p.m. Odeum Theatre and Maple Ridge Dance Circle will be on stage performing leading up to the Johnson Brothers. Entertainment has been lined up for Pitt Meadows as well with homegrown talent in the mix. Other hometown bands will be playing on Canada Day including at Pitt Meadows’ celebration at Spirit Square. The day will begin with music from Pitt
Meadows own DaniElle, who took second place at the 2013 BC Best Youthink competition. She will also play at 2 p.m. Then homegrown Penelope Above plays at Spirit Square at 9 a.m. and then again at 1 p.m. At noon, Michael Mitchell will take to the stage with songs and stories of Canada’s heritage. At 3 p.m., Rising Phoenix performs on the Spirit Square stage, followed by The Burn at 4 p.m. The entertainment will be interrupted by awarding of prizes for the Athletes In Kind run that takes place first thing in the morning and for the official Canada Day ceremony that takes place at 11 a.m.

he Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association is encouraging all businesses to decorate the window of their business with red and white for the Show Your Colours for Canada Day contest. It could be flags, or red and white products, or a mural. For example, Seamless Alterations on 22388 119th St. next to the bingo hall, had a mural painted on its front window depicting a Canadian theme. They did the mural as a thank you to all of their customers, for making
their first year a success, according to owners Fiona and Shawn Pederson. “It’s been a good year. It’s busy all the time,” said Fiona. Lynne Bradley, of the BIA, said this window is one of few. “This year there are not as many businesses participating, which is sad to see, maybe next year there will be more,” Bradley said. On Friday a judging committee will select three winners for the best decorated windows. Each will win a $25 gift card to a downtown business of their choice.

A while later, his mother asked if she could buy the original – however, because it was a digital painting, “there really is no original in the traditional sense,” LaMontagne explained in a blog post about the painting. However, he shipped off a print with documentation saying it was the original print, after refining it for a month. LaMontagne said he makes a good living from his commercial work and this painting was a break. “The whole point was to get away from everything being

Patrique LaMontagne, who creates the twice-weekly cartoons for The TIMES editorial pages, has a few famous fans – Emilio Estevez and his father Martin Sheen. LaMontagne is a digital painter and commercial illustrator in addition to being a cartoonist, and recently created a digital painting of Sheen in his role as Tom in the movie The Way. Estevez wrote and directed the movie, and LaMontagne tagged
about money and marketing, if only for a moment,” he posted in his blog. When Estevez asked for a price, LaMontagne decided only to charge the printing and shipping costs. LaMontagne has requested a signed photo of Estevez and Sheen with the photo, which he plans to reserve for a charity auction. However, he plans to be “very picky” about the cause he chooses. “I created this portrait for me, to remind myself why I paint, and since I truly enjoyed working on it, that was enough,” LaMontagne blogged. “But to have it appreciated by [Sheen’s] family, was a wonderful and unexpected bonus, not to mention a validation of my recent choices.”

A skilled defenceman who learned his trade while growing up in Maple Ridge will be earning an NHL-sized pay cheque over the next three years. Victor Bartley signed a threeyear, $2-million contract with the Nashville Predators, the NHL club’s president of hockey operations/general manager David Poile announced last week. According to the Predators website, Bartley will be paid $600,000 in both 2013/14 and 2014/15, and $800,000 in 2015/16. “I’m thrilled that we were able

The 15th annual Athletes In Kind Canada Day 8-kilometre Charity Race starts at Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre on Monday, July 1, at 9 a.m. It’s a big race in a small town for the whole family to celebrate Canada while raising funds for families struggling financially because of childhood cancer. Last year $8,500 was donated to families from the Canada Day run. Race organizer Lorie Muller hopes to do as well, or even better, this year. “Our big ticket item is our Swag Bags for $25 which includes a Kids Helping Kids t-shirt, water bottle, and drawstring gear bag,” said Muller. “It will yield $50 after Scotiabank matches it,” she said about the bank’s offer to match all merchandise sales dollar for dollar. Early race package pickup is Saturday, June 29, 3 to 6 p.m. at Stomping Grounds Cafe, 10931 Barnston View Rd. “Look for the AIK volunteers, they will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the July 1 race,” said Muller. New vendors for the charity run this year are Thrifty Foods, who is supplying run participants with healthy post race snacks, and Custom Hyde Strapz, who has a huge selection of leather customengraved wristbands for $15 each. The District of Maple Ridge was incorporated in 1874. On Sept. 12 of that year, a group of settlers met at John McIver’s farm and decided that they should incorporate as a municipality. The choice of name came from the trees and topography of John McIver’s farm. Over time, neighbourhoods like Hammond, Whonnock, Webster’s Corners, Ruskin, Albion, and Yennadon arose, each with its own post office, community centre, church, store, and school.

The name comes from the Pitt River and Pitt Lake. Pitt Meadows was originally part of Maple Ridge, which was first incorporated in 1874. Residents of the Pitt Meadows area petitioned for their removal from the District of Maple Ridge in 1892. Pitt Meadows was separately incorporated in 1914. Currently home to 17,800 residents, the City of Pitt Meadows’ population is expected to grow to 20,000 by 2020.
