Agricultural Land Commission

Farmland approved for Lougheed development

Thirty-three hectares north of Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows will be taken out of the agriculture land reserve. by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com

A long-fought agricultural battle has been given the green light. Nearly 33 hectares of land in the North Lougheed corridor has been approved to be excluded from the Agricultural Land Reserve. As long as the City of Pitt

Meadows meets a list of conditions, it will be given the goahead to move forward. Those conditions include further protection of farmland, a required change to Metro Vancouver’s regional growth strategy, and the start of construction of the North Lougheed Connector road within three years of the approval letter (dated Aug. 14). “They have given us the green light,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters. “There is still considerable work to be done in a rather short period of time but their support is the first step in moving forward,” she continued.

City staff will be working to get this part done, according to Kim Grout, director of operations and development studies. “My focus will be on making an application to Metro Vancouver Board for the regional growth strategy. “They need to change the designation from agriculture to general urban, which will likely happen before the year’s end,” Grout said. Elderly Pitt motorcyclist killed in Chilliwack

A 72-year-old man from Pitt Meadows is dead after he failed to stop his motorcycle in time and collided with an SUV. The man was riding his motorcycle eastbound at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on Trans-Canada

Highway in Chilliwack when he came upon stand-still traffic. The motorcyclist hit the brakes, but police say he was unable to control the bike and stop in time. He fell from the 2006 Suzuki

bike and slid into the next lane hitting a Ford SUV, which was stopped in traffic. The two people in the SUV were uninjured. A preliminary investigation showed that weather and road

conditions don’t appear to have been contributing factors in the crash. But traffic conditions, speed, mechanical defects on the motorcycle, and driver inattention have not been ruled out.

Bing shakes off jail misconceptions

Work programs inspire inmates to learn and help others. by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

An MLA had his preconceived notions about prisons put to rest recently when he toured Maple Ridge’s jails. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing joined parliamentary secretary for corrections Laurie Throness and Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton as they toured the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre (FRCC), and Alouette Correctional Centre for Women (ACCW) last week. “I had a preconceived idea of what the outside of a prison should look like from old movies of Alcatraz and memories of the BC Pen when I lived in New Westminster,” Bing admitted. “The only real prison I had ever been in was Oakalla prison in Burnaby when, as a university student, I had to go there to interview an inmate.” When the provincial politicians first arrived at FRCC, Bing said that from the outside, with its lightcoloured brick and manicured lawns, it looked like a college campus, not a prison. “There are no guard towers and no one wore guns – another preconceived notion down the drain,” he said. They learned 40 per cent of the staff at this

ACCW’s master gardener Barbara Collis said she has seen hundreds of women walk into the greenhouse feeling lost and believing they have nothing to offer the world. “This program gives them a reason to get up each morning. By teaching them skills like how to run a lawn mower, design a garden, and create hanging baskets, our goal is to help the inmates get a job down the road. But we also want them to change their behaviour and their lives,” she said. The tours of FRCC and ACCW allowed the parliamentary secretary of corrections to view frontline

BC Corrections processes and practices and to meet with managers and staff. “This work will continue as I tour more correctional centres throughout the province and conduct regional roundtable consultation sessions to bring together stakeholder groups,” said Thorness. “I am in the information gathering stage at this point, and I’m open to hearing feedback from managers, staff, inmates, community advisory board members, police, and other stakeholders,” he added. “Ultimately, my goal is to make recommendations that will enhance safety strategies to protect staff, inmates, and the communities where BC Corrections facilities are located.”

ARMS monitors channel Katzie youth are helping check the health of a new waterway. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Armed with measuring sticks, tapes, and notebooks, a small group of Pitt Meadows residents were recording what was growing in a new channel by Airport Way. When the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure built the bus lane on Lougheed Highway – from Harris Road westward – part of the Katzie Slough was permanently removed. To compensate for this loss of wildlife habitat, they built the Katzie Slough Blind Channel near Airport Way. Because it’s a new waterway, it is being studied for five years to see what kind of wildlife – fish, invertebrates, vegetation – grows in the channel. The Alouette Rivers Management Society (ARMS) has been tasked with engaging the local community in helping

monitor the new channel. On Tuesday morning, Greta BorickCunningham, acting executive director of ARMS, was out at the blind channel with two Katzie youth, Nancy Florence and Byron Antone, and Pitt Meadows resident Mike Stark, measuring and recording the vegetation, which included bulrushes, grass, and some fledgling willow trees. Engaging youth is a priority for this project, Borick-Cunningham said, and she hopes it sparks an interest in learning about the environment and stewardship. “ARMS’ focus is around engaging the youth – Katzie youth in particular... in an area they know something about,” BorickCunningham said. Skills that she hopes to pass on include: learning to do vegetation surveys, fish trapping, water quality testing, and studying stream invertebrates. The information collected by ARMS and the community members supplements the work a biologist is doing to monitor the slough.

Diversity education

Local libraries offering much more than just books

Maple Ridge Library will celebrate Eid on Saturday, Aug. 17.

F

ar more than just a place to borrow books, the library serves several public purposes. One of its functions is to act as a kind of impartial social centre, where our diverse population can come together to intermingle, collaborate, converse, debate, learn about each other, find common ground, and rejoice in the many differences that combine to form the character of our community. This is never more evident than when the public gathers in the library for the religious and cultural events celebrated throughout the year by different sectors of our community. On Saturday, Aug. 17, for instance, the library will join the Ridge Meadows Islamic Society to hold Eid al Fitr festivities. Eid al Fitr is a Muslim feast day that marks the end of Ramadan, a month-long phase of self sacrifice, charity, spirituality and sober refection, much like the

On The Page by Minakshi Sidhu

Christian period of Lent. Muslims all over the world join friends and family at the end of the month to enjoy food, music, and dancing. Other festive occasions – Diwali and Las Posadas – will follow, but the public will also have a rare opportunity this fall to learn about the commonalities among the various religions represented in our community. As part of the Many Candles: Interfaith Dialogue Series, delegates from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds will gather at the library to discuss topics that matter to all of us. Gatherings begin with a panel discus-

sion and are followed by an opportunity for dialogue and audience participation. The series, which begins on Wednesday, Sept. 4, is presented in partnership with the Family Education and Support Centre and the Building Interfaith Bridges project. In the leadup to Ramadan, I have three interesting books on my coffee table: two by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk, the other a memoir by Imran Ahmed of Pakistan. Orhan Pamuk has received numerous literary awards, including the Nobel Prize for Literature – the first Nobel Prize to be awarded to a Turkish citizen. Istanbul: Memories and the City draws from Pamuk’s own experiences and those of his family to describe a chaotic Istanbul – a city in turmoil, its residents torn between East and West, its stately architecture gradually giving way to concrete blocks. As a child, Pamuk spent time with his grandmother, who, over cigarettes and poker, spoke with friends about a more orderly and seemingly more exotic era of sultans, harems, and a city full of life. Pamuk’s equally compelling work of

fiction, Snow, tells the bleak story of a failed poet who, after many years of exile in Germany, returns to Istanbul. When he is hired to report on elections in the isolated Anatolian city of Kars, he also discovers a wave of suicides brought on by clashes between female Muslim students and their university’s secular administration. In contrast to the dark, although riveting, books of Orhan Pamuk, Imran Ahmad’s The Perfect Gentleman: A Muslim Boy Meets the West: A Memoir is full of racial and cultural comedy. Ahmad moved from Pakistan to London when he was a young boy, and his account of his developmental years in the socially complicated United Kingdom is insightful, funny, and often profound. A whole world of religious, cultural, political and philosophical diversity is waiting to be discovered at your library, through our programming and also in the form of books, magazines, DVDs, eBooks and other electronic resources. Fall program guides will be available at the library from the first week in August.

Our View

Help educate the haters

It’s not a totally bad thing that “homophobia” has reared its head in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows again. This newspaper is receiving some strong feedback to a letter to the editor [Call me anti-gay not homophobic, Aug. 13, The TIMES]. It was a letter by Maple Ridge resident Dell Krauchi, where he lumped “so-called gender-disordered” people (namely lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders) with rapists and child pornographers. We hate to believe that there are people out there still – in this modern day and age of tolerance and acceptance – that still honestly hold such horrifying, misguided, and downright illogical opinions. But, we don’t have blinders on, and we know they are out there. Fortunately, homophobes and gay-bashers are fast becoming the minority. Running this “anti-gay” letter is not about giving haters a forum to spew their rhetoric – although Voltaire’s Join the debate with quote comes to mind: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Running this letter was more about recognizing people in our community still hold such beliefs. And only through opening up discussion of the matter can we hope to change such views. It is about getting people talking, and maybe even educating a few of those “homophobic” sorts to the realities. Whether they like it or not, they are here, they are queer, and they’re not going away. They are our doctors, mechanics, shop owners, dentists, teachers, restaurateurs, business leaders, fathers, brothers, and uncles. They are our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, daughters, sisters, and children. They are our journalists. For the most part, being “gay” doesn’t carry the stigma it did even a decade ago. Most “gays” no longer live in fear, forced to seek refuge from haters in the proverbial “closet.” Society – for the most part – has accepted that they’re not abnormal. They have realized they, too, are just striving – as most people do – to live a productive and fulfilling life. They try to make a positive difference in the world around them – in their work and personal lives – and simply ask to be left alone to love whoever they love without fear of judgment, disdain, ridicule, or sometimes (even still) physical recourse. As a society, we should be proud of how far we’ve come, but we must recognize that there’s still a ways to go. – Assistant Editor Roxanne Hooper is an openly lesbian journalist

Retrofitting of the 83-year-old Ruskin Dam began last year, and is expected to be completed by 2018.

Ruskin

Milestone reached in dam overhaul by Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@mrtimes.com

One of the biggest hurdles in reconstruction of the Ruskin Dam has been overcome. The dam, on the easterly border of Maple Ridge, is undergoing an overhaul, which includes refurbishing the powerhouse and replacing the three generators, with an estimated cost of upwards of $748 million and a completion date of 2018. Recently, the workers marked the completion of the first major milestone in what project manager Boyd Mason calls a necessary safety and seismic upgrade. Admittedly, he said, when the dam was first built 83 years ago, earthquake safeguards were not a factor in construction. But today, standards have changed, and the upgrades are being made to not only ensure the dam can withstand a significant earthquake when – not if – it hits, but also that BC Hydro can get up and operational quickly afterwards.

The recent milestone saw completion of seismic improvements to the right abutment of the dam, which he calls the weakest link, and the most critical and technically complex and challenging phase of the project. BC Hydro received approval a little more than a year ago to start work on the dam. Work began immediately, but Mason said this project presents several “unique” engineering challenges. Consequently, specialists are being brought in from the U.S. and Germany to assist. A team is currently working on retrofitting the powerhouse, which is set for completion next year. And work is getting underway soon to replace the seven existing gates with five. A bulkhead, to hold back the water and allow work, is expected to go into place this fall, said Mason, who noted this too will be done in phases. The project also includes replacement of all the generators as well as the turbines, some of which are currently being fabricated in Brazil and China.

Key to creating a business presence is defining your voice The Social Chicks by Vicki McLeod

O

ne of the key principles of social media is that it is, at heart,

social. Some people find this notion challenging, particularly if the drive to engage in social is motivated solely by its marketing potential. Traditionally, we market via push messages – broadcasting outward to key audiences and consumers. While we tend to think of social media as a set of interactive tools, social platforms actually provide virtual meeting places that invite two-way or even multi-way conversations. Steve Dotto of Dotto Tech (www.dottotech.

com) – “Canada’s favourite geek” – recently visited Maple Ridge to take part in a Social Media forum. He put forward this helpful framework: Think of the Internet as a place, not a thing. You’re entering this place to interact with other people. Your business or personal website or blog, social media platforms and other digital spaces are the online places where people connect with you, in much the same way as your shop, office or storefront function offline. The online world is wonderfully diverse. Crowded with creative and interesting nerds, geeks and just plain folks, more than a billion conversations are taking place every minute. Jumping into this melee requires unique, engaging, and authentic content that provides value to audiences, followers, fans, and friends. Just like great conversations offline, the aim is to share perspectives, inform, educate, enlighten, or entertain. The only way you can do this successfully is if you are very clear about the

personality or identity of your brand or business. What kind of voice do you have? Are you formal and corporate, or are you whimsical? What is the essence of your company? What is its purpose or mission? What best reflects you and the industry or business that you are in? Asking these kinds of questions will help you define your online voice and develop a cohesive brand that is consistent across all touchpoints.

The answers will influence choices about online look and feel, logo and avatar colour and design, and content and posting choices. Content should always further the digital story of your brand and be relevant to the audience. For example, if you offer products that appeal to twenty-something environmentalists you will want to devise messages that reflect the core green values that you share with your customers. Photos and visuals that

depict nature’s unspoiled beauty and a casual and earthy look and feel would be appropriate. Your posts should reinforce the answers to the “Why?” questions. Why are you in business? Why this product or service? Why should we care? If you can find a way to make the content entertaining, so much the better. As humans, we love a good story, and we love to laugh. What you are aiming for is a genuine human connection or bond between

yourself (your company) and your fans and followers. There is a great deal of hubbub in the digital environment and you want to create a signal that cuts through the noise and makes contact. Finding your online voice and telling your story in a real way will not only help you build your brand, it will help you build a network of meaningful relationships in this noisy, crowded, vibrant place we call the world-wide web.

couple of senior butchers are bringing their wealth of knowledge back to a Pitt Meadows meat store. A 75-year-old woman and her 81-year-old husband are giving it a go again and have re-opened Kuiper’s Nicola Meats. Nellie and Mino Kuiper, who

have been married for 56 years, decided to open their butcher shop again after 13 years leasing it out to another butcher. “We never have been out of business, because we have a butcher shop in Merritt,” said Nellie, claiming she has been working at both places – Pitt Meadows and Merritt – for about a month. “We’ve repainted and cleaned it up – refurbished it. People who used to shop here came back,” said Nellie. “Our cow operation produces 200 calves a year. They are raised and grown out on our own ranch – truly natural beef that we can sell in our two stores, one here in Pitt Meadows and one in Merritt,” said Mino. Kuiper’s is planning to have a

grand re-opening soon. Kuiper’s is at 18389 Ford Rd.

well-known and popular mechanic passed away on Aug. 8 of a heart attack. Cyril Barry was the owner of Westside Auto Repairs. The official gathering is at Maple Ridge Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, to remember, honour, or pay respect to Cyril, and possibly to share a Cyril Barry Cyrilism.

Nellie and Mino Kuipers have been selling beef from their Merritt store for the past 13 years since they leased out their Pitt Meadows location. They are back in Pitt Meadows now, again selling beef and other things from the location at 18389 Ford Rd.

Meadow Ridge Knights once again hosted the football league’s annual Knights of the Round Table tournament this past weekend on the Rotary Field at Samuel Robertson Secondary. Stay tuned for reaction to the three days of play at www.mrtimes.com.

Caitlin Hart and Rae Samuelson, both students at Maple Ridge Secondary, fulfilled a lifelong dream when they won the gold medal in Softball Canada’s U16 Girls Canadian Fastpitch Championship in O’Leary, Prince Edward Island on Aug. 11. Hart and Samuelson, along with their teammates from the White Rock Renegades ’97, went 3-1 in the round robin portion of the 19team contest, and 3-0 in the playoffs, to earn the right to meet the Calgary Kaizen ’97 in the final game. They won that Hart and Samuelson game 3-1. White Rock Renegades ‘97 Hart, a catcher, and Samuelson, a shortstop, played every inning of all eight games. The victory is especially rewarding for the two players who won a provincial championship in 2009 and a Western Canadian championship in 2011 while playing with the Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association. The Canadian championship completed a triple play.

It’s like winning an Oscar 12 years straight.
