Election 2013
Spending big results in losses for local NDP Campaign financial documents were released by BC Elections on Monday. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
It was one of the biggest campaigns ever run by the NDP in Maple Ridge-Mission – and yet, despite a price tag higher than $100,000, Mike Bocking couldn’t secure a seat in the May 14 provincial election. Bocking spent $104,880 on his
campaign, the most of the eight local candidates whose election financial disclosure forms show a range between his and the lowest at $340. Bocking’s expenditures were $30,000 more than his main rival, BC Liberal Marc Dalton, but he was still unable to unseat the incumbent. Bocking said the NDP is currently examining why it lost the election, and a report will be given in November. However, he said the “socalled” positive campaign was a “major, major factor.”

No offence committed The RCMP officer who struck a 17year-old teenaged boy who was jaywalking on Lougheed Highway didn’t commit an offence, according to the Independent Investigations Office of BC. The teenager was crossing the highway east of 216th Street in Maple Ridge on June 15 around 12:30 a.m. He was thrown about 24 metres and landed on his face. Although the officer was deemed to be going about 15 km/h over the speed limit, the investigating officer, Richard Rosenthal, didn’t feel it was “a departure from what the law considers is the ‘accustomed behaviour of a reasonable man.’” • More at www.mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge’s Bob D’Eith recently released a new eBook and music CD.
View video & photos with
by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
Musically, Bob D’Eith sowed his wild oats in the early 1990s as the keyboardist with the nowdefunct Canadian alt-rock band Rymes With Orange. These days, the 48-year-old Maple Ridge resident may not be living a rock n’ roll lifestyle, but the frenetic pace of his life hasn’t slowed a bit. He’s the executive director of Music BC, a married father to three boys, and stepfather to two girls (all between the ages of 11 and 17, no less), one-half of the new age musical duo Mythos, which released its sixth record, Journey, and the author of A Career in Music: The Other 12 Step Program. Journey and the new eBook were both released on May 1. To say D’Eith is a busy dude is an understatement. Everything D’Eith has done through most of his life, and continues to do, revolves around music, and he feels that for the better half of a decade he’s lived in an area that’s been a hotbed for musical talent. “I run Music BC and [when] you look at our membership, and you look at all the people from Coquitlam to Mission, it’s just packed with talent,” D’Eith said. Music BC is a 23-year-old organization and D’Eith has worked in his current position for 12 of those years and sat on its board before that. He said Music BC is, for lack of a better term, the “trade organization for the music industry for the province of B.C.” While advocacy is a big part of Music BC, it also offers development programs, education, and funding programs. As executive director, D’Eith has also been instrumental in developing the $5.2-million artist development program with Pattison Broadcasting called the PEAK Performance Project as well as arguing for sustained or increased funding for the arts in the province. Meanwhile, D’Eith doubles as a music lawyer, but his passion for music remains. “I went to law school, but found that once you’ve been bitten by that [rock n’ roll] bug, you have to sort of try,” he said. “I immediately joined a rock band as soon as I got out of law school.” And not just any rock band. Rymes With Orange produced three records and had three top 10 singles on Canadian Rock Radio and sales of more than 70,000 CDs worldwide. “We did well,” D’Eith said.

Former Rymes With Orange keyboardist Bob D’Eith has had a lifelong passion for music. Troy Landreville/TIMES
D’Eith said the trappings of a rock and roll lifestyle were all around him, but he didn’t get caught up in it. “You gotta keep in mind, I was the manager of the band, I was also running the label, I had the law practice, I was the only one in the band with a wife, so it was like, I was the ‘business guy,’” he said. “So I had to keep my act together – I had to.” He left the Rymes With Orange before it produced its third and final CD, but he was part of its second and most successful
entry, Trapped in the Machine from 1994, which included the hit single Toy Train. As for his book, D’Eith said, there was also a rather steep learning curve associated with his first published work. “I took it to an editor, then I took it to a distribution company. When I wrote the book, I thought I was finished and I sent it to a distributor, and he said, ‘Oh that’s nice, now go write the book,’” D’Eith said. “When I thought I was finished, I was halfway through.”
The eBook A Career in Music: The Other 12 Step Program is a “how to survive in the music business in Canada,” D’Eith pointed out. “There’s a lot of books, but there’s not a lot about being a Canadian musician, and that’s what distinguishes this,” he said. “It’s a bit about me, my story, and how it all works in, but I tried to write it so it was accessible. This is more of a conversation between me and the reader.” – With files from The Province

Nurse convicted of sex crimes A judge ruled Wednesday that a staff member at Ridge Meadows Hospital sexually assaulted two of his patients.
by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
A nurse at Ridge Meadows Hospital was convicted Wednesday of sexual crimes involving two of his patients.
Abihudi Imbai, who was working at the local hospital in the summer of 2012, was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault following a twoand-a-half-day, judge-only trial. The case was heard in Port Coquitlam provincial court starting on Monday and included testimony from the two victims, as well as from Imbai. It wrapped up Wednesday with Judge Garth Smith finding the man guilty on both counts. Sentencing has been put off until Jan. 3, giving time to prepare a pre-sentence report.

Shopping spree benefits winner’s son Jassi’s story
A raffle winner’s son will spend five minutes raiding the shelves of a Pitt Meadows store on Sunday, thanks to the Lions Club.
Tom Hardy (left) and Gary Paller (centre) were selling tickets to a five-minute shopping spree that will take place at IGA Marketplace in Pitt Meadows this Sunday. The store is owned by Jim Pattenden.

The latest Pitt Meadows Lions Club fundraiser was a success, pulling in approximately $4,265, five bucks at a time. A Mission man’s son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter will benefit. Just what were the Lions selling? A chance to race up and down the aisles at the Pitt Meadows Marketplace IGA taking almost anything from the shelves. Bob Blumerauer was the lucky winner and according to Tom Hardy, a director with the Pitt Meadows club, he has a link to the Lions. “He is the nephew of a former member of our club,” Hardy noted. Those family connections seem to continue through the contest win, as well. When asked if he thought he would win, Blumerauer responded, “Absolutely not. It was just a good opportunity to support the Lions. You never think you’re going to win, but

I bought the ticket with the thought that if I did win, I’d give it [the shopping spree] to my son and daughter-in-law.” Blumerauer’s son Jordan is going to be the one raiding the aisles at the IGA at 9 a.m. Sunday, and everyone is welcome to come out and watch the fun. “They get five minutes shop-
ping,” said Hardy. “They are limited to two of anything. We start them out with $100 worth of meat and they are prohibited from taking any tobacco products.” As Hardy explained, the “two of anything” rule prevents shelf sweeping, but isn’t terribly limiting. For example, Jordan can grab
a maximum of two Campbell’s tomato soup cans, but can also grab two Campbell’s chicken soup, and two Lipton’s chicken soup. “We have no idea how much they are going to get,” Hardy added, though the club estimates it will be about $1,000 worth. If anyone is going to make the most of the opportunity, Blumerauer knows it will be his son. “It [the approach] will be well thought out by the time they [his son and daughter-inlaw] get there,” Dad said. “My son and daughter-in-law will make it fun for you. They’re going to take some video for us.” Blumerauer and his wife are unable to attend, so are looking forward to seeing the video and hearing all about it. Whatever money is left after the Lions pay for the groceries will go into the club’s fund for community support. IGA donated the second prize in the contest – a $100 gift certificate – and the third place winner received a Starbucks gift card. “I know the kind of work the Lions do,” said Blumerauer. “The people who will benefit from this are a young family – the kind of ones [people] they [the Lions] like to help. It’s nice when you see people who win it, who can use it.”

A thief took a quarter midget race car that was the pride and joy of a six-year-old driver. by Matthew Claxton Glacier Media
A six-year-old Maple Ridge boy is devastated after his quarter midget racer was stolen from Aldergrove’s small scale race track. Tristen Pozsonyi has only been driving his Rice-brand quarter midget since April, but he has spent a lot of time behind the wheel and was very attached to the car, his mother Brenda said. “He was pretty upset when we had to tell him his car was stolen,” said Brenda. Langley RCMP say the utility trailer, along with the quarter midget and Tristen’s racing suit and helmet, went missing sometime overnight on Aug. 14 from the Langley Quarter Midget Racing Association building. The total value of the trailer, racer, and tools is about $3,500, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. Police are asking that anyone who spots the distinctive racer or the trailer call them. The Pozsonyi family is also on the lookout for the trailer and its contents.
Natural Tasting Essential Nutrients for the whole family Tristen Pozsonyi’s beloved quarter midget racer, partly funded by his bottle drives, was stolen last week. There aren’t too many places in Canada to sell a quarter midget, because Aldergrove is pretty much the only track of its kind in Canada. The family is watching Craigslist and spreading the word online to keep an eye out for the car. They believe the thief doesn’t really know what he has, said Brenda. He probably just saw the trailer and took off with it. Meanwhile, Tristen will be back on the track soon thanks to the support of other families that race at Langley Quarter Midget, said Brenda. They have arranged for a temporary replacement vehicle for the young driver, which has made him feel a bit better. As his
parents can’t afford to buy a new $2,500 racer, his grandparents are chipping in to find a new vehicle. Her son had a lot of questions about the theft, Brenda said, and he doesn’t really understand why someone would take his car. “It’s a really devastating loss for him,” said Brenda. It’s especially hurtful because he’s been doing weekend bottle drives to collect some of the money for his own racing costs. He’s put in a lot of work, she said. Anyone who sees the car or trailer can call the Langley RCMP at 604-5323200, or leave an anonymous tip with CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go to www.solvecrime.ca.

Headstones cleaned, again The museum is inviting the public to help maintain the cemetery.
The Maple Ridge Historical Society is asking volunteers to come out once again this Saturday to clean headstones at the Maple Ridge Cemetery. Two weeks ago, the historical society held cleaning events on Aug. 10 and 11 with 10 people coming out to help. “It’s amazing what a little elbow grease, and water will do to the stones. You can notice a significant difference to the headstones, and more importantly, to the lettering and names which was the reason this project was started,” said museum curator Allison White. “Keeping the names legible so the history is not lost.” They are hoping volunteers will help out with buckets and brushes again this Saturday. The cemetery was established in 1878 on land donated by two pioneers: George Howison and William Nelson. Many of the older headstones no longer have individuals to care for them, therefore, the historical society is appealing to the Maple Ridge residents to help preserve these reminders of the community’s roots. Participants are encouraged to bring, if possible, a bucket with a handle, a soft-bristled brush (plastic, hair, not metal), watering cans and jugs for water, a knife, trowel, or scissors to remove grass, a whisk broom, rags, and a kneeling pad. Sturdy shoes, garden gloves, a hat, sunglasses, a water bottle, and sunscreen are also recommended for the event. “We hope to finish cleaning the oldest

Our View
Communities growing pains Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are in the middle of the push-pull battle faced by other nearby communities over past decades, as the Vancouver hub spread itself out past its suburbs and into lands previously occupied primarily by farmers and lumbermen. When areas like Point Grey and Kitsilano went through the process of urbanization a century ago, there was far less concern about attaching conditions to the woodlands Scan this and pastures as they page with were snapped up by developers. If a farmer wanted to retire – or just make a bundle of money – all he had to do was find someone who wanted to build houses or stores or factories on his land, and sign the papers. By the time it was Surrey’s turn to go through those growth pains, there was already a growing understanding – and concern – for the importance of agriculture to the future of the overall region and the population it was expected to support. By the time growth had an opportunity to overwhelm the Langleys and Abbotsford, there was an Agricultural Land Reserve and an environmental movement and a social commitment to not only the value of farmland, but to “green space” in general. Langley proudly labelled itself “the place where town and country meet” – but that epithet was imposed on the community, as much as it was happily accepted. Now, with the Golden Ears and Pitt River Bridges helping to push the population drive out further, councils of both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge are in the midst of that same dilemma – how do we develop economically without destroying our environmental future? Community leaders need to think faster and more carefully than ever before to ensure that mistakes made by others are not repeated here. – B.G.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor, There still are heroes. During rush hour on Aug. 15, my neighbour’s little white dogs had escaped from their yard and were running on 122nd Avenue and 189A Street in Pitt Meadows. A young kid stopped traffic to help save the dogs.
A few other concerned and caring people stopped to help gather the two frightened dogs. I just wanted to give a “shout out” to the people who help make our community better for all of us to live in, especially the young guy who saved those dogs’ lives. He is a hero. Anonymous

Commission commits arterial error
Dear Editor, So the Agricultural Land Commission has finally caved to Pitt Meadows. Now I’ll be able to save a minute amount of time getting onto Golden Ears Way. Oh, but wait. In their wisdom, retail – a net exporter of capital from the community – will be added to yet another arterial route. No thanks: with all that congestion, I think I’ll start taking Old Dewdney Trunk Road. Michael Patterson, Maple Ridge
Taxpayers ignored
Dear Editor, Mayor Deb Walters and her crew on council have gotten approval to remove the land north of the Lougheed Highway from the ALR. Another case of Walters getting her way and telling the residents of Pitt Meadows to “let them eat cake.” Taxes continue to rise, spending is uncontrolled with no attempt to lower
costs, and resident protests are ignored. Tax and spend seems to be the mantra of our present council. I thought we elected these people to represent the residents of Pitt Meadows,
not to promote their own agendas. Will council ever face reality and take the concerns of resident taxpayers into account? Archie Blankers, Pitt Meadows

Homophobia
Tolerance restores faith in town
Dear Editor, What does retracting a statement like Dell Krauchi’s actually mean [Author retracts statement, Aug. 20 Letters, TIMES]? To me, it seems he merely regrets how people reacted to it. Otherwise, the retraction would have preceded the hostile reaction to his first letter, rather than trailing it. I think it’s important for people like Mr. Krauchi to realize: not everyone was given an engraved bible as a child. Many of us weren’t raised with these beliefs. My parents let me decide for myself what I believed in, and I’m truly sorry if Mr. Krauchi wasn’t given that chance. Making your own decisions about each individual issue that presents itself is much more liberating than following a list of rules and judging everyone the same, even though each person in the world is different. We’re only human because we’re granted the freedom to think and act for ourselves. I believe in choice. I believe all races are equal. I believe religion is not the only way to be “saved.” I believe women can do anything men can do, and that a woman has every right to decide what to do with her own body. Most of all, I believe in accepting that you were wrong, and doing what is right, even if it’s not what you expected. It’s a difficult skill, and it is much stronger in children than older generations that are “set in their ways.” After having read assistant editor Roxanne Hooper’s response [Help educate the haters, Aug. 15 Our View, TIMES] to Mr. Krauchi’s initial letter [Call me anti-gay
not homophobic, Aug. 13 Letters, TIMES], I understand that the intent in printing Mr. Krauchi’s letters was not to support his views, but rather to make them public – to make everyone in our community aware of the fact that the problems in Russia are not as far from home as we thought. I have faith in my town again, because the voice of tolerance is louder than the voice of judgment. That’s a beautiful thing, which we should all take a moment to be grateful for. Kiley Crossby, Maple Ridge
Intolerance is the real sin
Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the ridiculous letter that made an even more ridiculous comparison of homosexuals to rapists [Call me anti-gay not homophobic, Aug. 13 Letters, TIMES]. I can only assume that the poor, uneducated man who wrote such a letter was brought up in a home full of discrimination and hatred towards those who are different. Intolerance to anything different is the real “sin” here. Until homosexual dance parties burst out on his front lawn, he should keep his opinions to himself instead of forcing them onto the tolerant and understanding people in the community. It makes me sick to think that there are people out there who put their life’s happiness on hold for fear of offending people like your letter-writer. Cheryl Grant, Maple Ridge [Note: Fuller versions of these letters and others are online at www.mrtimes.com. Click on Opinion.]

yrgos Taverna, the little Greek restaurant owned by the Nikolopolous family, is nestled between Sports Traders and Notary Public Wendy Whitter. The restaurant is in the 22500 block of Lougheed Highway, and I’ve been assured it will continue to operate, despite the recent announcement it will lose all but one of its street parking spots because of a left-turn lane being added at the corner of 226th Street and Lougheed Highway. The parking doesn’t actually belong to the individual businesses along Lougheed Highway, but it makes it more convenient for their customers and co-owner Georgina Nikolopolous said the loss of the parking could potentially hurt her business. She recently had a meeting at the District of Maple Ridge, and staff there said it was necessary to accommodate growth in downtown Maple Ridge. “I spoke with the engineers. It’s unavoidable,” said Georgina, who operates the family-run business with her brother George, sister Tasia, and mother Margaret. “There will be parking. We are working together

Stratas required to report
A
depreciation report is a legal requirement for strata corporations in B.C. as of Dec. 13, 2011. The requirement for a depreciation report has been implemented by the government to help strata corporations plan for the repair, maintenance, and replacement of common property, limited common property, and common assets. The report will have to include an inventory of assets, evaluation of the condition of the assets, and life cycle replacement estimates. Cash flow models will have to be provided to cost out the replacement estimates. Strata corporations in B.C. need to obtain depreciation reports every three years, unless they hold an annual three-quarter vote to exempt
or have four, or fewer, strata lots. There are different timing requirements for the first depreciation report depending on when the strata corporation was formed. • For strata corporations formed on or before Dec. 14, 2011, a depreciation report is required by Dec. 13, 2013. • For strata corporations formed after Dec. 14, 2011, a report is required within six months after its second annual general meeting. The regulations governing depreciation reports set out comprehensive requirements for what has to be contained in the reports and who is qualified to prepare the reports. Depreciation reports will form an important part of the strata corporation’s legal and financial structure. A depreciation report must be

disclosed in the information certificates and will likely be commonly required by insurance providers, mortgage lenders, and prospective purchasers. The real estate marketplace may well see a discount applied to prices for strata units that do not have depreciation reports. To the extent that a depreciation report is being relied on by third parties, the strata corporation could be potentially liable with respect to the accuracy and reliability the information in the report.

Maple Ridge’s Riley Donaldson had his picture taken, holding a copy of his hometown newspaper The TIMES, on the patio of the governor general’s residence overlooking Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. He was there for a day trip as part of the explore program he’s taking while attending the Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres. In the meantime, a team of dancers from CentreStage Dance in Maple Ridge were invited to perform in Disneyland last month. They not only had a chance to perform in the park, but were also given the opportunity to work with Disney talent specialists. During the week-long adventure, the students made sure to have a group picture taken showing off a copy of The TIMES.
